I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A little background info:
I had a friend of mine build this PC for me a few days ago, its custom.
This is the motherboard I bought (new): Z-97A
I did a lot of upgrades so we had to do a custom install, I chose the default location to the same drive as my original W7 OS was on.
I installed all the drivers that came with the motherboard and all windows updates.
Even if they are not recognized the devices still get power (like my phone will charge but the PC doesnt know what it is or even see it as unknown)
While gaming 2 nights ago one of my presumed dead USB ports that didnt read my Sennheiser headsets randomly began to read it & automatically installed drivers for it after I was initially unable to get it to detect before. So it just kinda came "alive" on its own you could say

Hey out there, I have tried everything from: microsoft support, forums, etc. but I cannot get my pc to detect my devices & names except for multi-printer, mouse, computer, keyboard, and a generic external hard drive without a (drive letter?) in the devices and printers catagory. When I hit computer catagory after start, it only shows: local disc (C:), and removable disc device, which is my desktop computer's internal DVD/CD player. HELP! Now more politely, I would love your help..

Thank you so much for your reply!!

A:detecting devices

Have a look in Device Manager. If you see one or more yellow question-marks in the device list it means you need to install the drivers for the devices which currently don't work. The drivers can be downloaded from your PC or laptop maker's website if they support Windows 7 on your particular model.

my laptop is a few years old (behind the times)
make & model: Acer Aspire 4315-2490
using windows vista basic.

about a year and a half ago, 2 of my 3 usb ports stoped deteting ANYTHING. the 2 that don't work are on the right side of my laptop with the working one on the left. i plug a flash drive in and light on flash drive doesn't even come on. it's like my computer is acting like i'm not pluging in anything at all. i just did a system restore to factory settings last night. they still are not working.

Hi,

Sorry, but it sounds as though you have a physical hardware problem. Without opening up the computer and doing advanced and expensive repairs, there is no way of fixing this. You will just have to live with 1 USB port. You could however buy yourself small USB splitter so you can have more than 1 USB device plugged in at once.

Sorry again,

Richard

Hello everyone Merry Christmas.

As a gift for a buddy of mine i've promised to fix up an old computer in an effort to aid with his career as an oil painter (access to Fineartamerica, research, etc.).

But at any rate; I've done a bit of swapping around of hard disk drives and cd drives and whatnot and have decided on a very basic config. using a single hard drive in the Master slot and a single cd drive in the slave.

The problem im seeing is that the Bios is not detecting either of the drives, or perhaps very briefly then disapppearing.

At first i thought it may have been the cmos battery, because the drives would appear at first and then disappear immediately, but i've purchased a new cmos battery and its still doin the same thing.

For a while i thought i may have had the wrong jumper settings because the hd drive didnt label them, but i checked a diagram online of an identical drive and its set at the master slot; and the cd drive at the slave.

I've tested it with several IDE cables in multiple channels and it still gives me the same message when turned on 'Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key'.

also, the disk drive opens and functions properly when IDE cable is not connected, but when it is connected it doesn't appear to be getting any juice.

any thoughts?

thanks-chris

All devices have installed, the bluetooth module shows up in the device manager. I've downloaded and installed the Atheros Bluetooth driver from the Acer website. However when I try to add a bluetooth device it doesn't find anything - it just says "Searching for devices" and eventually says "No devices found". Time for a re-install, and look at your BIOS setups closely... you likely have some problems that can be corrected with changes as you boot to <F2> or <F10>
Start with Default, then go through each setting on the list. There are specific settings for IDE/EIDE... and they are not always obvious changes by the way they are worded...

Hi,

I have an old Athlon xp 2800 running XP sp2. After expanding its memory I had some "blue screen" events... I did some "house keeping" and apparently everything is fine again.

However, Windows seems not to recognize any devices attached to the computer. This applies to printer, sound, USB ports and even the network card (despite I could make it work after the house keeping).

When I open the Device Manager, it shows a blank page, as if there were no hw devices on the computer. Also, I tried to force a hw detection but it simply does not work.

I ran chkdsk /f several times and nothing was found...

I am afraid some windows files got corrupted.

Can anyone help with this?

Hi all, it's friday the 13th and on cue i have another weird one i have a PC that does not detect any USB device connected to it though i know power runs through since it can charge my cell phone. here is what i have so far: 1. WinXP home SP2, P4 2.63Ghz, Gigabyte 81845GVM-RZ, 256 DDR400. 2. have uninstalled all usb root hubs and rebooted 3. 2 ports at the front of the case and 2 at the rear, plus (here's the punchline) 2 ports from a PCI add on card. NONE of them work. 4. USB controller is enabled in BIOS. 5. while my cell phone charges blissfully, the power tab of all root hub properties still shows 0mA 6. i've tried clearing CMOS 7. i've done a repair (NOT full/format) installation of the OS 8. to try and isolate the issue, i've tried booting from miniPE (a WinPE variation) while a USB flash drive was plugged in, it's worked for me before, nogo here either. what have i missed? not sure about changes made to the system prior to this since it's someone elses and they can't say for sure either. i'd settle for it being a mobo issue and recommend they trash it, but an add on card too? please help guys, you've saved my posterior before, so i'm counting on you. thanks.

Hello, I've been experiencing a string of bad luck with my Asus G75VW laptop.

Recently my 1TB harddrive showed signs of dying, so I pulled a 70gig harddrive out of an old laptop and replaced it till I got a new drive. A few days later the 70gig puckered out as well, I just wiped it and reinstalled windows and it worked for a day or two and then it failed again. I decided to pull another harddrive out of another laptop I had and after a few hours of it working great, my computer began to start freezing and then blue screened. After it crashed, I powered back up and now I can't see any options for bootable devices; no harddrives, no usb, not even my DVD drive. It does detect that the harddrive is there in the Sata Configuration. Also, the boot splash no longer appears when powering up if that could be a possible clue to my problem.

TL;DR After having a lot of harddrive issues, computer blue screens and now has no boot options.

I have absolutely no idea what I should check now, much love to anyone who can help me out.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < use the /f and /r options in Option 2 ifnecessary
The ultimate option would be a clean reinstall and it is easy using this
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 you just need the activation code from the sticker on the machine and don't do as some do and go for a version of Windows above what was originally installed it only ends in endless grief. See pic

Hello everyone...

I have a brand new Acer Predator AG3620. It has an Intel I7, 12 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 2GB video card. It shipped with a 2 TB hard drive and Windows 8 which worked fine.

I installed a Mushkin Chrone 240GB SSD drive and wanted to install a clean copy of Windows 8 on there to remove all the Acer bloatware. This is where my life ended... After an unfortunate series of incidents, I am finally at the point where the BIOS (or whatever they call it these days) recognizes and boots from the drive. However, the Windows 8 installation will not complete.

It gets to "Detecting Devices" and after it gets to 69%, 72% or 79% (it changes all the time), the system reboots and I get an error message, "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "Ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation." After searching tirelessly for a solution, I realized that Acer had a BIOS update which I installed and I am STILL having the same problem.

I suspect there is some type of hardware compatabilty issue but I am not aware of any logfile that can help guide me. I have done this installation about 20 times in the last few days and it is absolutely maddening. It just WILL NOT work! I have read every post I could find and tinkered with every setting in the BIOS, port on the motherboard and SATA cable I have. I have gone from AC... Read more

A:Clean install on SSD keeps failing at Detecting Devices..

Your suspicions are correct. I have had the same problem on several different models, since the earlier public previews. There have been three or four solutions offered, even on this site, none of which have worked. In particular are older HP models, especially the Envy15, but some Acers are also experiencing the problem.
Bu you could be lucky. Do you not have any restore disks which you could experiment with? Final solution for you is, of course, to return the old HD to the machine and hope all is well.
Popular theory is that it is the graphics card. This idea doesn't sit well with me, as when I have encountered that particular problem with other machines, it merely reverts to the Default VGA screen, which, of course, it has been using right through the install process.

My Verbatim 1TB USB External Hard Drive was hanging my PC at boot message "Auto Detecting USB Mass Storage Devices... Device #01. When I checked my settings I found my Legacy USB support was set to AUTO. Following the prior threads success I changed the setting to DISABLE and the problem was solved. Apparently when faced with the choice of Enable Disable or Auto, the Auto setting doesn't always choose the appropriate action. Thanks guys and gals for a great forum site.

I'm running windows 7...
I have 4 usb ports on the back, two on the front
All usb ports appear to be giving power, i can charge things (except ipod), but no devices get recognized in windows
So yesterday i plugged my camera into my computer and it cause my mouse to turn off. After which i plug my mouse into a different usb slot which seem to work. After a while i notice though that my mouse would lag and cause my computer to not response for a few seconds every once in a while... The next day when i came to my pc i notice my keyboard was turned off... I tried to move it to different ports and in every port i would get "Device not Recognized or malfunctioning..." No usb device gets recognized anymore, except my razor mouse, for some reason this gets identified.

Right now i have no keyboard and i can't go into my bios or re-install my OS... I tried putting BOTH my keyboard and mouse into usb-ps/2 converters but when i plug them into the ps2 ports nothing happens... no windows device sounds, nothing happens...

I tried uninstalling my usb controllers from device manager, as well as manual install my dell keyboard drivers (NEITHER DID ANYTHING)

I'm pretty much lost for ideas here...

Did you try deleting or uninstalling all the usb devices and rebooting? It is an old support trick to get Windows to reinstall the same driver. It seems to work as often as not.

If it does not work after that, at least for a short time, it may be a hardware issue.

Hello,

I have a Windows XP and have recently been having some virus issues. I have used Avira, AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot, etc., to scan my computer and remove a lot of the corrupted files.

The problem I am having now is that any external device I plug in to my computer (hard-drives, thumb drives, iphone, ipod and memory cards) through any of my usb and card reader slots are not being recognized in "my computer."

The slots do work, in the sense that the external hard-drives light up and the disc spins, I can charge my iphone and ipod through my usb, but my computer does not find them so I cannot access the external hard-drives, memory cards, or sync iphone and ipod. Also, I can hook up these same devices to other computers without any issues.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of the usb drivers, tried safe mode, and multiple other things I've read from other forums. I was also getting the "windows no disk exception processing error" that I was unable to resolve by any of the proposed methods such as renaming drives, etc. I ended up downloading a patch to make this error go away, but it just stops the error from popping up, it doesn't actually fix the problem. I am guessing this might be related to my current problem, but it may also be a result of some of the spyware and trojans I have had and what I deleted from my computer to clear up these viruses.

Symptom 1: Xonar D2 Audio Center does not behave normally -> Speaker test does not function. The speaker test function included in Windows under "volume\PlayBack Devices" does function normally.

Symptom 2: Devices within "Playback Devices" are incorrectly named.

How it should look:

How it looks on my computer:

I have tried to install this countless times.

A:Asus Xonar 2D/PM - Playback Devices - Devices Incorrectly Named

Only difference between the D2 and the D2X is one os PCI (D2), and the other is PCI-E (D2X), so you're not missing anything that way. The speaker test not working is something else. You using the latest driver from Asus (Version: 7.12.8.1794), or the one that came on the disk with the card?

Might be worth giving this modded set a try,

ASUS XONAR Unified Drivers 1.64 (post periodically updated) | brainbit

and see if that fixes it. I have a DGX and have only ever used the above since the day I got it as I had seen the reports of how flaky the driver from Asus could be.

Hi!

I have two USB audio devices that I cannot seem to properly install drivers for.
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 & KORG MicroKONTROL

I am in communication with both product tech support teams but so far they have not offered a successful solution. As the same issue is occurring with multiple devices I thought it might be an OS issue.
I run Win 7 Home Premium x64

The problem is as follows:

The product drivers install correctly without error. However, instead of showing up in the Device Manager in either USB Controllers or Sound Controllers they both show in Other Devices with a yellow exclamation mark.
I have tried the following fix from this site (USB Driver - General Fix for Problems) and this actually enabled me to access a portable HDD that wasn't working, but it didn't fix the issue for my 2 audio devices.
I have also tried right clicking on the devices in Other Devices, selecting Driver Update. I then find the correct drivers listed but when I hit install I get the following error message on both:
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. One of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time."

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Audio USB Devices showing under Other Devices in Device Manager

Could it be the two devices are competing with each other and the driver installer gets confused? Details on the devices and the needs to use two of the same type probably would be helpful.

Hi there

Not sure whats happening here but getting multiple displays for the same devices !!!!

Any fix, or is system Broken.

Cheers

A:Devices and Printers - devices being displayed multiple times

Looks like Ghosts of DLNA devices. Start by taking offline any DLNA capable gear, reboot the Gateway and also clear its IP Table.

Also clear out those ghosts from Devices and Printers.

For some reason this started in Windows 7, when Microsoft started to play games with DLNA and media Shares.

i added 2 new SATA dvices one HD and one DVD Burner everything work fine

but i dont understand why it apears on my removal dvices (just like it does when i conect USB dvice)

i think its because the new technology SATA uses (unlike IDE i can plug unplag it when the Pc is on) therefore it is shown as removal dvice

maybe its normal thing i dont realy know i see it only on my Pc

anyway i would like to fix it , if there any way to

here is the pic:

A:Sata devices problem apears on removal devices

I'm not sure that is a normal happening.. I have a sata harddrive myself and it does not show up in the remove devices. Only thing i can think of is make sure your drivers are completely up to date.

When going into my Microsoft account, then under 'Devices', there are 4 devices linked.
The number of devices is correct, but that's it.
All other data is incorrect, or outdated.

I have 2 'real' PC's and 2 VM's using 1 single retail Windows 10 Pro and 3 upgrades from 7/8->10
However, 'devices' show 1 'real' PC (n?t the one with the retail W10 version, but the one running on an upgrade) and 3 VM's.

I assume it isn't but if at all possible..., how do I get that in sync with what I am actually using.

Windows 7 Professional 32bit, Gigabyte x86 PC.

Windows bluetooth discovery is not finding any devices. On my android phone I can turn on discovery and locate the PC, and it prompts me to enter the passcode on the PC. However no devices show up.

I have tried three different USB dongles and installed the generic Windows bluetooth driver. (One of the devices prompted me for a different driver which was downloaded and installed, but then the radio was not recognized) I've tried three different devices as well (a mouse, a trackpad, and the android phone).

I've installed "Bluetooth Command Line Tools" and it tells me that the radio is installed and working properly, as does the Windows device manager. Bluetooth icon shows in the system tray when the dongle is plugged in.

I've changed the settings in services.msc as detailed in other posts (changing to local account with my username and password).

I've turned off firewall and antivirus, no change.

Constructive ideas, suggestions, and opinions are welcome. I can't just throw it out the window, though, as this is a work computer. All I want to do is add a Bluetooth trackpad.

A:No bluetooth devices found, but other devices find the PC.

I've just installed BlueSoliel (trail version which will expire in 30 days) and now all my devices can pair and connect.

At this point it appears to be a Windows software / driver issue. I'd really like to track this down and fix it myself, I don't mind actually paying for the BlueSoliel software but I'm stubborn about 'stupid computer problems'.

After upgrading to 8.1 all of my previously listed devices are no longer listed under devices... in fact there are no devices listed. I can also not add a device. If I look in device manager they are listed there and if I go to print the printer shows up and I can print. The screenshot below shows what I see when I open "Devices and Printers" in control panel. The biggest issue is not being able to add devices like Bluetooth speaker. Anyone have an idea how Tom resolve??

A:Windows 8.1 upgrade no devices now listed under devices.

You'll need updated chipset drivers from your computer manufacturer.

I have a Dell XPS 8000 with a 4 in 1 card reader. I also have a DVD and a Blu Ray drive installed in the computer.

But in the descriptions in Computer, I get this:

BD-RE Drive (G SD/mini-MMS/RS
DVD RW Drive (H CF/MD

I have even moved the two drives off of the SATA ports built into the motherboard to a Startech SATA III PCI card, but this behavior continues. I have even deleted the 4 drives in device manager and had windows reinstall them. I have also unassigned and reassigned drive letters to the card readers. Nothing I have done fixes the situation completely.

The only progress I have made is that after moving the drives to the PCI card ports, I can put a disc into either drive and it will read it, and the description will change and drop the card reader description. But the other drive will keep the wrong drive description.

What can I do to fix this?

I have been unable to connect to anything on my wired network, for about the last week. I don't remember making any changes however, I just became unable to connect.

I having done a little troubleshooting.

1. I can connect to the shares of my Windows Home Server if I use the IP address. The name does not resolve.

2. Flushed DNS and restarting DNS server. Flushing DNS works on one client, to allow browsing by the name & restarting DNS works on the other. However neither works after a restart.

3. Only my Wifi clients are experiencing this issue. My wired clients, desktops, PS3, Xbox 360, and Boxee can connect perfectly.

This issue is not limited to my server. I can't connect to shares on my desktop, nor print to my wired printer.

Some network background:

I have DSL through CenturyLink and have a Linksys E2000 router.

Sent a test page from one laptop to the printer at 6:36pm, it finally printed at 6:48pm....

I recently installed Windows 10 on a laptop. I have a bunch of computers on the network to include a WD MyCloud and a shared printer. The Win 10 computer can 'see' the devices in Network file explorer. When I attempt to open a computer or the MyCloud, I get an error message that the device cannot be found. But, printing to a standalone networked IP printer works fine. Also, printing to a printer hosted on an iMac acting as a print server works fine, too.

I tried connecting from two PCs on Windows 7 and they can see and open the other computers and MyCloud without any problems. I logged into MyCloud's website and the drive is visible from outside the router. I did restart router and other network equipment a few times just in case.

Something with the Win10 settings I am sure - I tried turning file and print sharing under Advanced Network Settings On and Off and still no access. I turned the firewall and virus software off, still no access. Why can the PC show me all the icons along with their network names, but I cannot open anything?

A:I can see Devices, but Cannot Open Networked Devices

I fixed the problem. I uninstalled the wifi driver, restarted, reinstalled driver, and everything worked!

My friend happened to look in Devices and Printers, and in the Multimedia Devices section he had about 10 devices showing up that he never heard of. Six of them were computers with names that he had never heard of, the others were devices that we could not tell what they were.

I expect that these entries mean that at some time they were on the same network that he was on. Would that be correct?

If so, then it is a matter for concern because he never goes on public networks. He only goes on his network at home, and a network in a small office that he rents and shares with one other person. They have their own router with security set up on it, and that router is connected to an Ethernet jack that most likely goes to a switch on a network that also provides internet service to some other offices in the same building.

This computer is only about 2 months old, so these entries can't be too old.

When I looked at his computer, he was on his home network and all those other devices showed as Offline. I right clicked on them all and removed them. Would it be a good guess that perhaps the security of the network at his office was compromised, and those devices were connected to that network at some point?

I told him to monitor and see when they reappear, but he won't be back in that office for 2 weeks.

Thanks

A:Unexpected devices appear in Devices and Printers

I occasionally see seemingly random devices show up as well on some of my herd here. I can always sort out what they are though since I know my network well.

Having said that;
Windows found these devices over the network at some point. From what you've described, it sounds like the office is where this happened. I'd see about swapping out the router there if they continue to show up since some older cheap routers actually allowed traffic from their WAN side to pass to the LAN. Haven't seen that in some time, but I'd still consider the router to be the prime suspect.

I have Win7 RC1 installed on three machines. Two are 64-bit and one is 32-bit. On the 64-bit desktop and the 32-bit laptop, everything seems to be running OK in the Devices and Printers window. However, on the 64-bit laptop, the Devices and Printers page doesn't load. The green bar moves across, then stalls after several minutes. Hey guys,

I just went out and bought a mic from bestbuy and I plugged it in, I had a small bit of trouble getting the headphones to work, but eventually got them working.

Now I am having trouble with the microphone part of the headset. It is plugged in properly to the back of the computer in the correct jack, but for some reason under "Recording" it is giving me the message of "No Audio Devices Are Installed."

I have no clue what to do and was wondering if anyone out there could be of assistance to me?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

Respectfully,

Borgstede

A:Devices>Recording: "No Audio Devices Found"

I just plugged in my old headset which IS a USB headset and it recognizes it but I am unable to speak, I dont know if its because the mic doesnt work anymore or if its another problem.

My new mic is NOT a USB headset, it has two different plugs, 1 for the headphones and 1 for the microphone jack in my computer. So is it because of that feature that my computer is unable to recognize the new microphone?

I just bought a WD Caviar 80GB 8mb cache HD for my Dell Dimension 4100. I want to have this hard drive set as the slave for my computer; however, it is not being detecting. I connected everything properly with the jumper settings set correctly and it still does not detect.

One wierd thing is, if I set the WD hard drive as the master, it boots directly to a screen saying "insert a disk to A: to boot" or something like that. (although, I realize the HD has nothing on it and has not been formatted), the wierd thing is that it boots directly to this screen and seems to skip loading anything else on the system like the memory, floppy, etc.

Any ideas on what could be the problem here?

I'm trying to find new firmware for the motherboard, but I'm finding it hard to find...
