Can't find drivers since putting in new drive...

Q: Can't find drivers since putting in new drive...

I use two hard drives, a smaller one that runs XP and a larger one for primarily storage. I replaced the storage drive...this had been the "first" drive and was labeled c: while the one running XP was labeled d:

I installed the new drive and rebooted. In the process, the volume labels flipped: the primary drive became c: and the storage drive becoming d:

This has thrown Windows into a world of confusion and all previously installed programs show up as uninstalled. They are still there in "program files" but many of them refuse to open, reporting not being able to find .dll files which I can search for and find on the computer.

Is this a registry issue? Is there a way to reconcile it without installing all this software again?

Thanks for any help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm going to try installing this graphics card today if I can, so I was wondering if there's a way to find out what power my psu is giving out. Oh, and I read in the installation guide that I should update my motherboard's chipset driver, but which one is that? In device manager, I can see intel 82801gb pci bridge, intel 945g/p pci express root port among others, do I have to update them all?
And finally, (I hope) I was going to forget about the 2 questions above and uninstall the driver for the old graphics card, so I found it in add/remove programs, and there's two! There's a secondary one as well, do I have to uninstall that too?
If there's anything else I should know please let me know as well, I read somewhere (here, I think) that you can wreck your cpu with static so are there any precautions to take when I open this thing up?
Whew, what an essay.
Thanks in advance.

A:How do I find out what power my psu is putting out?

The maximum wattage (a lie really) is written on the PSU.

Your PSU gives out as much power as is drawn by the devices up to the maximum. A la if you have 100W worth of devices running, then that's what your PSU delivers.

I'm getting a new system, and I want to wipe out Windows 7 and install Windows XP on my old system. I have not actually done anything yet--Windows 7 is still installed--but I'm trying to understand what I need to do.

I don't have a floppy drive, so I want to try the nLite slipstream procedure.

Unfortunately I've looked everywhere I can think of, and I have not found the SATA drivers. My motherboard is an MSI X-58 Pro-E (MS-7522)3.0, and my hard drive is a Western Digital Raptor 300GB 10,000 RPM Model No.: WD3000GLFS. I've looked at the MSI site, the Western Digital site, and the CyberPower site. I've looked in my Windows 7 installation disk. I've made numerous searches on the Internet....I just can't find those drivers, or the .inf file(s).

My PC manufacturer did not send me any floppy disk or CD having drivers for either my motherboard or my hard drive. I have submitted an email to Western Digital customer support, but today is Saturday, and I do not expect a reply before Monday.

Where can I find those drivers? (and the .inf file(s)).

A:I canNOT find the drivers and the .inf file(s) for my hard drive.

Welcome to SevenForums

You should be able to find the driver you need at the manufacurers site under chipset drivers.

Their is no specific driver needed for your hard drive.

Once you have iinstalled you chipset drivers you can install the XP as usual, just insert the disc format and install.

I just purchased a new Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, it has a TS-L633C DVD-RW drive.

I updated the DVD drive firmware to a version available on Dell's website (original D300, current DW10).

Now every time Vista starts, the "found New Hardware" wizard opens and attempts to install drivers for the DVD drive (which it doesn't find).

The drive functions perfectly, it appears in "Computer", and I am certain there are no drivers that need to be updated.

How do I get Vista to stop nagging me to update the drivers ?

I probably am not saying this right, but I have heard that by putting your operating system on one drive and the programs on another, the computer will run faster. Also, backups will be faster because you only have to backup the program drive.

I might have that wrong ? it could be that you load the OS and program files on one drive and put the work product on the second drive. (Could they possibly be talking about three drives - one for the OS, one for the programs and a third for the work product?)

If anyone can tell me how to do this or lead me to a place where I can read about this (and how to do it), I would be most appreciative.

My concern is caused by the fact that I am running out of space on my C Drive. I am told that a larger C Drive, by itself, may not be the best way to go.

A:Need help in putting OS on one drive & programs on another

Drive 1 - OS

Drive 2 - Programs

If you only back up Drive 2, it won't help. Most programs not only create their own folder, but also modify the registry, add dll's to the Windows folder, and more.

I would add a second drive, move My Documents to it (right click on My Documents, select properties, and move it from there), and move all other data to the new one.

I have made an IMAGE of my old "C" drive on my desktop. I have a new drive that I bought and loaded it up but now want to replace that one with this new IMAGE that I just made. I think I know how to do it but I am unsure if I need to erase everything off the new one before I put the NEW IMAGE on or will it just overwrite it anyway? I was working with AustrAlien but he is not available right now to walk me through it.

XP Professional and I made the Backup Image with Acronis True Image Home. This is what I have written down drom the last time:

Acronis CD Boot Disk ? Safe Mode (Wired Mouse)
Select Desktop backup on Seagate - Next
Restore Disks & Partitions - Next
Disk 1 (top box) - Next
No, I do not - Next
Validate Backup ? NO
PROCEED ? will take a long time!

I was originally going to make a Clone this time but sort of got confused so I just made the Image since I knew how to do that one.
Thanks in advance.

A:Putting an Image on new "C" Drive

I'm not 100% certain I understand what you want to do, but let me try to answer what I can. If you "restore" an image to a specific drive or partition, whatever is already on that drive or partition will be overwritten by the image. Is that what you are asking?

I have vista. I don't like vista. I want to use my windows xp disk and put it on my flash drive and boot it from there. I have 2 512mb memory cards in my pc. So I have over a gig of memory. My flash drive is 1 gig. I know I'll probably need a bigger flash drive. I need to know how big a flash drive and how to put my xp on that flash drive. I also need to know how to duel boot.. I've asked my son but he doesn't seem to want to help me..He is too busy playing wow. some please help me. Thanks

A:Need help putting xp on flash drive

Ok, this is quite easy... Do not use your flash drive. I'm not trying to be mean but your flash drive cannot exceed 14mb/s, your hard drive, even a slow one will go far beyond that around 150mb/s.

Also I understand I had one of the beta copies of vista, you need much more than 1gb of ram. I had gotten rid of it within a couple of weeks for I could not coupe with the lag.

First your hard drive how large is it? If it is around 80gb or larger you're fine, much smaller it will be difficult dual booting xp & vista.

**Dual booting
First you will need to partition your hard drive, give each partition a minimum of 20gbs I recommend around 40 to be safe.

You will need a program such as Paragon Partition Manager. This and similar programs cost around $30. You could probably find one just as good on Google for free, or download a Linux live CD of any distribution... also free but around 600mb.

Shutdown your computer, press the power button and tap F12 repeatedly until a window comes up, you should see a menu with all text or mainly text, that's the bios. In there you will find an option to "boot from CD" scroll to that and press enter.

From there windows explains most of what you need to do on-screen. When it asks about the location make sure you select the partition you have just created not the one with vista on it. You may also format with the disk, this will delete anything on the new partition but will leave the other intact as long as you sel... Read more

When I looked inside the tower, there was a sata power and sata data cable going into the main drive and the same going into the DVD device, but other than that, there were normal white power connectors like this;

except they were wired into the power system, as you might imagine, same as the sata power ones are, and two free sockets on the motherboard where the sata data cables go in, so I'm wondering, what to ask for, I've never dealt with sata before, so I imagine if I get a sata drive it won't have any extra cables? Or should I have to get a special cable adapter to go from the white power socket (as in the pic) to a sata connector to fit the new sata slave? If that makes sense..

Also when you get a new drive should it have the same rpm and GB too as the primary one?

A:Putting a SATA slave drive into my PC, although..?

You should be able to get a sata cable from your local PC store.
If you have no spare sata power connectors but have a spare molex connector you can use an adapter like this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=36039
You can use any size / make of hard drive, all you need to do when installed is initialize and format the drive through diskmanagement

A:Putting old hard drive in new computer: What should be done

For a minimum of hassle and full operation, you are going to have to reinstall Windows to that hard drive if you move it to the new laptop. The old hard drive likely has an OEM version of Windows on it from the old laptop. OEM versions can't be moved to another machine. You'll have to use the activation key from the new machine to reinstall.

All I got with my system was a recovery CD, was thinking about adding a new harddrive and putting winxp on that hard drive also, so that way if I have a problem with one I can always boot to the other. But my question is can you add winxp with just the recovery disk? I do have an old copy of winxp corporate edition, but other than that have nothing else.

A:Question on putting XP on 2nd hard drive

If you have the recovery disk I would recommend that you take the drive that has your current installation of XP out of the PC and then install XP from the recovery cd on the blank drive. Once it's installed hook the working drive back up. When you load the system it should ask you which XP to boot. If it does not ask you after this then you may need to adjust your drive jumper settings.

Purchased a new 2T hard drive and hoping to put my ever expanding, out of control DVD movies on the external hard drive. Need some ideas/help with the following:
I have about 500+ DVD movies in the DVD format of VIDEO_TS, and AUDIO_TS folders, also a goodly assortment of AVI type file format video. What I would like to do, is move the DVD's to the external hard drive and hopefully come up with a way to play on the Television directly from the external hard drive. It looks like an organizational nightmare. Would I generate folders Alphabetic ( Folder A, B, C, etc. ) and then move each movie DVD into the correct folder, etc.?  Is there a better way? How would I print a searchable data file of the contents? My Samsung TV has an external USB port, is there some program, etc. to do all of this. Just have so much space tied up with the DVD's ....time to shrink all of this down.
Welcoming some thoughts, direction, etc. before I begin the task.

A:~~Need some help putting DVD movies on Hard drive~~

What I would like to do, is move the DVD's to the external hard drive and hopefully come up with a way to play on the Television directly from the external hard drive. Not likely you would be able to play your videos directly from an external drive hooked up to the TV via USB. Check your TV owners manual for info. You'll most likely require another device, such as this rather expensive unit: https://www.amazon.com/WD-TV-Media-Player-WDBYMN0000NBK-HESN/dp/B00JXFM75Y  or, like me, you could have a dedicated computer [HTPC] connected to your TV via a computer's display port or HDMI cable with your external drive connected to the computer via USB. Your videos would be viewable via Windows Media Player Classic [my preferred video player] or VLC by simply dragging/dropping the Video TS folder onto the player. I always rename the TS folders first to the name of the video. Drop them all into a single folder & you'll have a continuous alphabetical listing, easily scrolled through [I wouldn't bother myself with doing folders A B C etc, it'll just slow you down]. Set the folder view to Details. Easier than trying to locate a DVD off your shelves. The Audio TS folders BTW aren't needed [they're always empty] & can be tossed.  I have an inexpensive wireless mouse/keyboard combo connected to the computer. I've used an old Win7 laptop in the past but now am using a dedicated low profile HP 8300 computer, I bought used for $125 running Win10. Just be sure the compu... Read more

I wish to add a 500 gig. WD Blue Caviar IDE drive to my SR1910NX P.C..

I have an ide cable at the moment which has DVD +/- RW drive on the
Primary (slot at top) and secondary or slave is empty (2nd slot).

At the bottom 3rd slot a sata cable is connected to Seagate ST3120213AS .
It originally came with my p.c.. It has small disk space like about 112 gbs.
There is no such thing as primary and secondary on sata cable is there ?

So if I wish to add 500 gig. WD Blue Caviar IDE and install Windows Xp pro.
on it. Can I put it on Secondary slave or must it be put on Primary on ide ribbon cable in order for O.S. to work including the DVD burner ?
And will Seagate ST3120213AS drive still show up in My Computer after I do this ?

And where could I download & install all the drivers to ensure SR1910NX P.C..
will work when I use 500 gig. WD Blue Caviar to install Windows Xp Pro.?

A:SR1910NX- Putting a ide hard drive for XP Pro. O.S.

There are no drivers required to install an IDE drive. You should change the HDD to be in the Master slot of the IDE and the change the CD to Secondary. (Both drives should be set to CS (Cable Select) Then you have to change the Boot order to be CD rom drive first boot device, and IDE HDD second boot device if you want it to be the main boot drive of the computer, the SATA drive should follow after that, then install XP on the IDE drive. Seek time will be much slower on the IDE drive then a SATA.

Here's my situation. I bet there's an easy way to do this, but I'm not quite a computer genius (which is why I'm here!).

The hard drive that's running XP right now is a small 6GB drive, and I have recently bought a new 120GB drive. I transfered all of my large files on the new drive (that's now acting as a slave drive) such as music and games. Now, my old drive is getting too cluttered, and I just wanna wipe it clean and boot from the new drive. I want to install Windows on the new drive while retaining all of the things existing on the new drive. By the way, I have everything from the old drive backed up.

What should I do in this case?

A:Putting Windows on a new hard drive

Make your new drive master

Put your XP cd in and boot from it

Install keeping current os on new drive so you don't format it.

You can copy your "activation" file over from your old drive and it likely won't even ask you to reactivate.

The hard drive from the Dell I put in (with all my valuable files) is a Western Digital WD800 80Gb (set to Cable Select) replacing a Hitachi Deskstar 80Gb in an old updated computer with an AMD Duron and Windows XP. I tried changing the jumper to Master, but to no avail.

Wouldn't mind getting some advice before starting this.

I bought my daughters laptop 3 years ago when she went to college. It came preloaded with Vista home ultimate but only had 1G of RAM and therefore was relying on some use of hard disc to function properly. Hard drive is only 70GB. You can guess the rest - she has filled upthe hard disc and so it is now taking too long to access things, boot up etc.

I have now put in another 2GB of RAM and this has improved things but the machine is down to 1.2GB dispite all my disc cleaning (I use Auslogics Boostspeed which always seems to work well). However I think I need to replace the hard drive with something bigger and have found a 500GB diac on offer for GBP50.00 which seems good. (I have tried to get her to use an external drive - which we have - however she mostly uses the machine for music and downloaded movies etc. In practice this is Itunes and while I think I have spotted how to redirect Itunes to find / locate the music library away from the hard drive (so I could just move all the music to the external drive I suppose) she doesn't want to have a clunky external drive permanently attached to her machine).

I have the drivers and utilities disc that came with the machine and the Vista product key but I need vista itself. If I have the product key can I;
1 download the software from MS - using the product key as proof that I have purchased it before. Otherwise
2 can I somehow create a disc I can use to reinstall ... Read more

My computer is running Windows 7 professional. It is a fresh install. I have a blu ray drive installed (LG BH12ls38) that works fine. However, when I put my computer to sleep and wake it back up, the drive is gone. When I go to device manager and try to scan for hardware changes it still doesn't recognize it. The only way to solve the problem is to shut down the computer. Restarting the computer doesn't help. If I restart, the computer stays on the motherboards screen for a longer period of time then it normally does (about 30 seconds). Also, it seems that this drive is affecting the computer when I shut it down. After having this problem of not being able to find the drive it seems my computer takes longer to shut down. I have installed all necessary updates for Windows and the driver is provided by Microsoft driver version - 6.1.7601.17514 and date is 6/21/2006. I called LG and they have not been able to find a solution. It seems they do not provide/have a driver and rely on microsoft's drivers. I also updated my BIOS to the newest version. I went to my local store and tried another LG drive which was older and not blu ray and it worked fine so it's not a motherboard or power issue. My computer is running in IDE mode. The reason I state that is because I saw some posts about people switching from IDE to AHCI mode to help similar problems to this. However, I talked to the technician at my local microcenter and he said this wouldn't be the issue. Sound... Read more

3) One option, clearly, is not to use "sleep". While hibernation and sleep work perfectly for many, there are LOTS of folks who have various problems with one or the other (or both). Believe it or not, these functions were never 100% perfected by Microsoft (hard to do when you are dealing with all of the possible various hw & sw configurations). You can simply set the hd & display to power down after a defined period of inactivity. It should work just fine for you.

I do realize that you can move your entire "My Documents" folder in order to make this work. But I am trying to do this on a notebook computer. So, I am asking if there is another way to make this game run on a portable hard drive without relocating "My Documents". A way to make the downloaded content to work from the portable hard drive would work too. Any pointers would be great.

I am putting a new harddrive in a HP Pavilian Notebook Computer, series DV5000. I had to order an HP Recovery Disk for windows XP as there was not any recovery disk available for this computer. I would like to be made aware of any problems I may encounter before I start loading XP onto a new harddrive. What Microsoft product number will I use for the software. Hopefully this number will be located on the outside of the disk when I receive it, or should I use the one on the bottom of the computer. This disk is on order and has not arrived yet. Will there is any problems activating XP with a new harddrive installed? Thanks for any help you can suggest.

Short and Sweet: Need to put something bootable onto a blank hdd that ultimately leads to the install of windows 10.

I am working on the hdd for my pc. I am USING my MAC throughout this entire process.

The hdd on my pc died. I purchased a new exact model of the hdd. I am trying to put Windows 10 on it. I have an ISO of Windows 10 install available from Microsoft. The Microsoft ISO is for all versions of Win 10 and works for both 32 and 64-bit installs. BIOS only allow to boot from: HDD; Network; FDD. There are no additional BIOS settings that allow for USB to be a bootable option. There is no optical drive on the pc, nor - laughably - a floppy drive. Not especially talented at command line and using a mac, I don't want to attempt network boot/installation. Flustered and flabbergasted about what to put on the hdd that WILL be going in my pc but for NOW is an external drive on my mac.

HDD formatted ExFAT. The ISO from windows is not booting. The copy/paste of the entire ISO's contents does not boot. I have Win 10 running on VM on Parallels. I've tried to install ADK onto VM, but have no experience with this software. I successfully installed the PE, only that it installed on my VM, I had no option to install the PE on the external. No luck there.

I looked into installing Ubuntu and then installing windows, but that too uses a CD or flash bootable install. It does not matter how circuitous, can someone please help me in installing Win 10 on my blank hdd?

Ok. My friend's laptop decided to die on her..for the most part. It won't get past the welcome screen. She types in her password and the circle is infinite.

I can't figure out how to solve that (so if you can, then that would be great..) so I was wondering what would happen if I took out her hard drive, put it in an external exclosure, and then hooked that up to my lappy. Would that work? I just need to see her files again. Once I did that I would take the hard drive out, put it back in the laptop, and then format it. All I need are her files

So would that work? Any immediate help would be greatly appreciated guys!

Sure would, but there may be an easier way to save the data.

I've been dying to try out linux lately and thought I'd give it a shot. I rather liked the live USB drive I tried out and thought I'd to a complete install. Just as a precautionary measure before I do so, however, I'd like to make sure I have a ready copy of Win7 ready in case I change my mind.

My laptop has no DVD drive, but I already made sure that I can boot from USB. I do not have access to the original installation disc unfortunately, as I bought this pc from dell =/

How would I go about doing this? I'd prefer not to use torrents to obtain a Win7 iso, even though I have a legitimate copy, because I'm on a college network and would rather not get kicked out for doing that >.<

You'd be much safer making a complete image of your hard drive - including ALL partitions - before you install Linux. I'd recommend something like Acronis True Image or Ghost to image with.

I'm going to put a new hard drive in my laptop - the other one is having trouble reading, and Dell sent me a replacement. Here's my issue:

My computer by default is Widowns XP Home (Sp1)
I upgraded to XP Pro, and then SP2

I'm going to back up my computer onto my external harddrive - but before restoring it, I'll need to re-setup my computer with the XP Home restore disc I have, then upgrade to XP pro, then SP2, then re-install my external HD software, then restore it?

Or is that not the way?

A:putting a hard drive in a work station

The 2GB harddisk will be big enough for Windows 98 or a slim Windows 2000.
You can not just move that HD from one PC to another, you need to install afresh.

See this thread for Dell passwords: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic18780.html
