Windows Internet Explorer AND sleep function not working properly!

Q: Windows Internet Explorer AND sleep function not working properly!

I've never seen anything like this. Okay, here's the system rundown --- Running win 7 pro sp1 64 bit on a Dell xps 8000. Replaced hard drive one month ago, and I've used Seagate's diagnostic tool to check out hard drive, which didn't find any errors with the hard drive.

So, here's problem 1:
Computer was running great up until four days ago. It wouldn't wake up out of sleep properly. It would freeze. I would have to reboot to wake it up. It won't even let me LOG OFF correctly because when I go to log back on, I don't get the prompt to choose the user or enter my password. When I reboot --- that I can only do by shutting on and off the power, it's fine. The computer starts up fine in SAFE MODE, so I'm not detecting any issues there.

Problem 2:
Internet explorer 10 (got it with one of the updates two weeks ago) simply would HANG and not open. Even with I would click it once and open task manager to see what was happening, it showed multiple instances of explorer open. So, what I did was turn OFF Explorer 10 in the "turn windows features on or off" section. But when I when to turn them back on to see if it would reset, I not only lost the default windows icons from the start bar, Explorer refused to initialize when I tried to start it from "Programs" or from clicking the explorer.exe icon in both Programs (64 bit) and Programs (x86).

To this point I've done the full scan disk, and also run SCAN NOW. I also have anti malware software installed and see no indication of malware. It appears that both problem 1 and problem 2 occurred at the same time.

So, what the heck happened and where else should I start troubleshooting?

Preferred Solution: Windows Internet Explorer AND sleep function not working properly!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yesterday the sleep function on my E560 began to behave strangely. I pressed the round power button on the upper right hand side of my keyboard, which doubles as the sleep button, and the computer didn't go into sleep mode immediately (which would be indicated by the red light in the letter "i" in "ThinkPad" slowly blinking on and off). Instead, the screen turned black and then the fan made a loud blowing noise before the computer went into sleep mode. When I pressed the power/sleep button again to wake up the computer, the screen remained black for 5-10 seconds before it came on.  Normally, it would come on immediately. Prior to yesterday, the sleep function worked normally.  What happened?

I've recently upgraded to Window's 8.1 , I'm on my 3rd reinstall but still can't get IE 11 metro functioning properly, the dudes at Microsoft support keep making a mess so I then have to keep reinstalling. Nobody knows how to fix this problem!

Every time I start the machine and run IE metro it just goes to the blue screen with the big "E" symbol and crashes
event viewer reports :
"The server DefaultBrowser.DefaultBrowserActivatableClass did not register with DCOM within the required timeout."
IE opens silently on the desktop (that is the window is not visible but it's running) when I actually open the desktop then I get the "restore session message appearing" and I keep restoring sessions equal to the number of times I attempted to open IE in Metro.

I've been using a bizarre work around. First start machine then login wait for start up items to load, then hit the restart button wait for machine to restart login wait for start up items to load low and be hold IE metro runs.

IE metro will only run if a "RESTART" is used to start the machine.

1) Don't tell me all the usual crap like clearing file history ssl caches, it don't work!!!!
2) Don't tell me to reset the browser it don't work!!!!! it's how I found that just using the "RESTART" button works.
3) Don't tell me to uninstall IE via programmes and feature and unselecting the IE check box restarting and reinstalling IE that don't work either!!!

We are using Outlook 2016 and Windows 10 (1607) and we are running into a weird problem.
In internet explorer (11.576.14393.0) if we right-click on an image/e-mail picture. Outlook will open a new email but the attachment will be named: (2) without any extension. (see image)
We made some research and the file is actually an HTML file. If open the file with internet explorer, the image will show. If we change the extension  to .jpg the image will open correctly.

We are trying to figure out why is the image not attached correctly in Outlook. We tested on several computer that have the same version and they all have this issue.
We also tested on a windows version 1511. On this version the problem does not occur. If you try to E-mail picture, attachment manager will pop-up and attach the email correctly to outlook. (see image)

We are trying to figure out what changer on the version (1607) that would cause this issues.

my internet explorer cannot find any pages or websites. computer connects fine and ie comes up but then I get "page cannot be found". outlook express email will not connect to receive or send mail either.

this prob occurred a few days ago right after my yahoo messenger stopped working. I decided to uninstall and reinstall it, so I uninstalled it. Then I decided to clean out the cookies, temp int files, history etc. Since the computer was running very slow, I decided to see what else I could clean out to free up disk space so I removed some stuff I wasn't using from add/remove programs. while doing so, I removed two microsoft updates which I didn't think were needed there as windows updates occastionally. I think that might have been a mistake. I also ran spybot, ad-aware, spyblaster and norton antivirus. I then posted my HJT log to the HJT forum which came back clean.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling IE which didn't help. I installed netscape which had the same problem. Mozilla Firefox also had the same problem so I uninstalled that.

I called tech support and they couldn't figure out the prob either, got disconnected and couldn't get back with them.

I tried to download explorer 8 on Sat.
The internet locked up and would not come back up.
It looks like it is going to connect, but it does nothing.
I found a site that told me to go to inetcpl.cpl and reset.
That works for the moment.
Each time I go back on the explorer will not work.
Today I had to do a system restore to get the computer back on.
What do I do to see what is going on and how do I fix it?

I appear to have a problem with my netbook where Internet Explorer is failing to allow me to access any websites (coming up with the message 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage') despite the fact that the internet connection appears to be fine (e.g. I am able to access msn without any problems).

I've tried clicking on 'Diagnose Connection Problems' but it just comes back with the message that Windows Network Diagnostics didn't identify the problem.

I was accessing common websites such as google and the BBC using favourites, so I know they've worked for me on this machine in the past.

I've tried using tools to clear the history in case that was the problem but to no avail.

Suggestions welcomed!

Had this issue after upgrading Windows 8.1/Bing to Windows 8.1 Pro: About 30-90 seconds after putting the computer to sleep the computer can't wake up again. When switching the computer on after about 25 seconds after putting it to sleep you can see Windows switching the computer off automatically. In the system event protocol there is the message:
"Das System wurde aufgrund eines kritischen thermischen Ereignisses heruntergefahren."
(in englisch something like: The system was shut down because of a critical thermal event)
followed by "ACPI-Thermozone =SoC Board Sensor" and "_CRT = 3532K.

After some experiments I came to this temporary solution: In the BIOS settings I disabled the "Internal USB3.0 Controller" setting - then sleep works properly.

This error only occures when on the Pro-version of Windows, not with the original Bing-version.

Switching off the internal USB3.0 controller is not the ideal solution ... Is there a chance there is another solution? I also already tried upgrading to Bios-version 5.00, which didn't solve the problem.

I am extremely frustrated with the issue my computer has developed ever since I upgraded to Windows 10. I have a Dell Inspiron 7537 and any time I try to close my laptop lid, thus activating the sleep mode, the monitor turns off but the computer does not fully go into sleep mode. I can still hear the fan running and my light-up keyboard remains lit. In addition, if leave it with the lid closed for a long time, upon attempting to wake the computer, I find that it is overheating and won't wake up. I have to hold down the power button and force shutdown. Because of this issue I resorted to powering down the laptop, however, I experienced similar problems. When I click the Windows key and elect the Power - Shut down feature, I get the same problems as described above.
I have tried everything to resolve this issue. I have updated all my drivers, including video, bios, chipset, etc. I have uninstalled Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver. I have tried changing all the power options to high performance, then balanced performance, etc. I have contacted Dell support who have run all sorts of scans but no resolution. I have contacted Microsoft Answer Desk several times and they have been completely useless. Very quickly you can determine that they don't know what they are doing. One agent suggested that I simply create a new account. When that didn't fix the issue she disconnected the remote connection.
Can someone please help? Any suggestions? Even if it's to tell me ... Read more

I searched through the forum and I find that my problem appears to be very unusual. My Firefox, Google Chrome, and Internet Explorer browsers are not working properly and this issue has prevented my computer from shutting down or restarting properly. This
problem started when one day, I was unable to open up Google Chrome (which is a browser I commonly use) to go online. Google Chrome refused to launch open. When I finally got it to open, it was a blank screen that would not show my frequently visited websites
as it normally would but would only show my bookmarks bar. When I tried to enter a website, like google.com, it refused to load and responded like I had not entered any website at all.
In a panic, I tried internet explorer, which also refused to launch. Then, I decided to shut down my computer but it refused to shut down. The screen would say "Shutting Down" and would go black but, after waiting over 5 minutes, I decided to force
shut down the computer. (This is very similar to the scenario that would happen when I would restart my computer). Once I turn the computer back on, however, my browsers work normally.

After calling the manufacturer of my computer, they had to put my computer in safe mode and then they scanned it for viruses after deleting the temporary files on my desktop. Strangely enough, this fixed the problem and my browsers worked normally. However,
in less than a day, the problem would return. I know this is not a virus problem be... Read more

I tried to search the forums for this because I know it's not new but I couldn't find it.

I am getting a pop up window that says

"Windows Explorer is not working properly"

then it says its searching to fix the problem then it resets the desktop. I tried to do a System Restore before this started but the outcome is

System restore was not successfull and that it encountered an error. I tried this at several different dates.

When I went directly to my System32 file I found the following

When I tried to delete these files, it says that a program is using it and to stop the program.

I also tried Spybot to remove any viruses but nothing came up.

I also have Norton and scanned numerous times but nothing.

So now, this window pops up every other day or so but I know its still there screwing with my computer.

Can anyone help with this? Or show me where there might a thread already on this site. Thanks so much for your help.

A:My Windows Explorer is not working properly

Hi jelintaric,

Some questions:How long have you left it after boot? Please wait 20 minutes and see if explorer loads. This will tell me if the process is locked or if something is just slowing it down. i.e. I want to see if the problem is explorer or another influence.
Are there any on screen error messages saying that explorer has failed to load (or anything else suspect)?
Is there anything in the Windows event logs to suggest what might be tying up or killing the EXPLORER process? (especially disk errors)

Some general maintenance to find problems and speed up your system:Run a Checkdisk on all drives
Ensure that you have set up defragmentation.
Check for windows files integrity by running SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated command prompt

They happen when I open windows or software. It's kind of random.

AOL runs really weird. Anything I try to open like my mail which is all I use AOL for, it puts those three little windows up one at a time and I have to close each one then my mail will open. A:Windows Explorer is not working properly

Hi Dave, welcome to TSF..

I moved your post to its own thread.

It seems likely that there may have been some nasties bundled onto that disc you bought.

The first thing I want you to do is uninstall Kaspersky and any other security programs which are not working properly as these will just be slowing your system down as well as create more serious security issues.

Don't worry about those files you mentioned, they're perfectly safe..they cannot be deleted as they are locked by various Windows processes.

Please read through this thread as it explains the '5 Step Process' to take before posting some log files for our analysts to look at for you. You may not be able to complete some steps due to the problems you're but just do what you can and when you post a new thread here, include as much information as possible on the nature of the problems and any other relevant information such as details of any problems experienced when following the steps.

Any probs, please let us know.

Hello, Extatic here. I've come across an error and I was wondering if any of you could help. I've read up on some tutorials on how to fix this, but none of them have worked.

My "Favourites" within Windows Explorer is broken. It will not work. I can't add anything in there, and I can't restore the previous favourites. I believe I deleted my default "Links" folder in my C:\Users\(UserName) folder by accident when cleaning it up, and don't know if restoring that (somehow) will hold the key to my troubles.

Either way, I'm completely stumped as to what to do! I've tried registry editing, and I've tried re-adding the links folder manually, but nothing has worked! It bugs me as I've usually got to use some folder links there for quick access, and would like this matter resolved ASAP!

I installed the card and downloaded the latest driver to my computer from the NVIDIA website (version 196.21 to be exact). I then turned off my computer, and plugged in the provided s-video cable to the back of my desktop, and connected it to a radio shack s-video to RCA (the yellow video connector for most TV's) converter and plugged it into my TV (which NVIDIA says shouldn't be a problem). I then followed the online instructions from NVIDIA on "Connecting a video card to a TV and enabling TV output". This included using the "Run television setup wizard" on the NVIDIA Control Panel. Upon following the prompts for the setup wizard I am taken to the first screen which says welcome and click next....so I do. okay at first i thought this was a mild issue but apparently not only my desktop is missing, my control panel is missing too. on top of that i'm no longer getting sound from my speaker.

I'm using a Windows 8 on an SSD.

What Happened?
I tried to remove my portable harddrive safely. Then something went wrong with my Local Drive C it seems. A pop-up message saying, "C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. 2) Can't search a lot of stuff e.g. Control Panel using Window key+F anymore
3) No sound
4) Startup app doesn't start up automatically even when i have it enabled on Task Manager

What Have I Tried?
1) Copied Desktop folder (empty inside) from my user folder and pasted it in C:\Windows\....\systemprofile folder. That didn't help the case that much either because whenever I start login into my user account I wouldn't able to go to desktop by pressing the Windows key or click on the top left of the Start Menu of Windows 8. Only Window key+D would work. Right clicking the bottom left doesn't bring up a list of stuff including "Control Panel"

My modem (Siemens SpeedStream 4100) and router (Linksys WRT120) both function properly, but my desktop computer (HP-Pavillion Elite m9077c) won't connect to the internet. I never had a problem connecting up until a month ago, but since then, nothing. I know the modem and router function properly because all the wireless devices in our house (e.g., laptops, Wii, xbox) can still connect, and I can plug an ethernet cable into the router and the laptop and it connects. The device manager on the desktops says that the network adapter (Intel 82566DC-2 Gigabit) and the wireless adaptor (USB wireless 802.11 b/g) are functioning properly.

I tried several things to try to resolve this, such as, disabling the Windows firewall, but no luck. At this point, I think I need to work through this systematically, and that's where I need your help. Whatever information you need from me, let me know, and I'll provide it.

Below is a screen shot of my ipconfig/all.

Thanks in advance.

A:Modem/router function properly, but no internet

According to your ipconfig the wireless connection should be online and should be working.

If you want the wireless to work instead you will need to unplug the Ethernet cable because Windows can't use two connections at once and will tend to choose the wired connection if both are being used.

You may also need to go into the routers setting and make sure the wireless settings have the correct security and encryption. You should also go into the wireless profile for this connection in Windows and make sure the settings match the ones being used in your router.

Or it appears: SSL Error / The webpage isn't available.. I tried using other browser (IE) but it still works very slow, and I can't download Firefox because it is too slow, I also reinstalled Chrome. Any suggestions? And could you explain as best as possible (I am not exactly an expert when it comes to computers ). Have a good day!

My Dell notebook with Vista Home Premium always worked well regarding the Power option. Lately, the laptop will no go to sleep when left even though I have checked the power settings on plug in and battery and reset them. The display turns off at the correct time but the notebook never goes to sleep even hours after the designated time.

The only changes I have made are with the battery and I upgraded to Norton Internet security 2010 from 2009.

A:Solved: notebook sleep function has stopped working...

Sleep works when on battery, but not when plugged in. Strange.

Since the 19th when my computer installed the following updates

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173)
Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3119142)
Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135782)

it will no longer fully shut down. Having encountered this issue when I first upgraded to 10 I went to turn off hybrid sleep, and the option is currently disabled on the device. However, the only way to fully shut it down is to hold the power button till it shuts off.

Is there any way to fix this? I'd rather not have to unplug everything every time I shut it off just so the lights won't keep me awake.

A:Disable Hybrid Sleep function no longer working

I'm not sure what method you are using to adjust Hybrid Sleep. Are you using Change Advanced Power Options?

See option 1: Power Plan Settings - Change in Windows 10

If any settings are unavailable use the link to "Change settings that are currently unavailable"

Recently, I had to re-install WIndows 10.
After re-installing, I noticed that SLEEP option is not working properly. Before re-installing, closing the lid used to stop all the applications and computer used to turn off. But now, the computer's power light + fan remain ON. Putting the laptop in my bag suffocates it and thereby the body of the laptop becomes quite warm.
I tried with hibernate option, no change. Even if I select Shut Down from start menu, power light + fan are still on !

A:Sleep (power option) not working properly

Abu-Hafss,When you reinstalled Windows did you reinstall all drivers back into the system? If not, you will need to get the drivers loaded. You can also go int the setting  and choose Power and Sleep. Here you can set the computer to sleep or hibernate. You can also click the Advanced settings from this area as well and set the computer to sleep or hibernate. You can click the link below to choose your computer and installed OS to download and install the drivers if needed.Support.Dell.com

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this issue, so I'm just posting it here, feel free to move it if need be.

I have a custom built PC that I myself built. I've had it for 2-3 years now. From the time it was built until a few months ago sleep mode worked perfect. When I went to the start menu and clicked the little power button the computer would enter sleep and whenever I wanted to resume my work I would hit the mouse button or the spacebar and it would boot right back up where I left off.

Recently, however, that has changed. Now when I click the power button the computer seems to enter sleep mode but takes about a minute longer to do so. It will also not allow me to power back on with the mouse or keyboard, I have to use the power button. Then once I push the power button, the fans and lights power on but the display, which is HDMI, doesn't seem to be recieving either a signal, power or both. The same goes for any USB ports, as the mouse and keyboard do not light up or respond. I have to hit the physical reset button to get the computer to boot up correctly. When that is done I lose anything that was open or wasn't saved when I powered down.

I have gone into Control Panel>Power Options>High Performance: Change Plan Settings and everything seems correct to me. The display is set to never turn off and the computer is set to never sleep since those are based on time I would rather do it manually.

Advanced Power Settings looks like this;

I just got my new X1 Carbon. Unfortunately there seems to be a bug with the sleep mode. When I put the Notebook into sleep mode the Thinkpad LED blinks as it should be (indicating that the notebook is indeed in sleep mode). However: 1) Fans are still active and quite noise. I am in a Hotel room and the Notebook should be quite during sleep mode.2) Battery consumption is insanely high. It was almost full when I went to bed and at 10% next morning. Having a functioning sleep mode is very important to me, as I like to put my Notebook away without second thought. Is there any way you can fix this?

This is a recent problem. I have a Toshiba Canvio external drive, not SSD. It's got Bitlocker, so when I turn my PC on or awake from sleep, I have to enter a password to access the drive. Now, if I restart my PC, it works fine. Recently though, when I awaken from sleep, I'll click on the drive to enter the password, and Windows does this eternal loading thing. The address bar in Explorer has that green progress bar moving along, but it never finishes. If I unplug the drive and plug it back in, I can enter the password and access the drive, but after a while it'll start doing to eternal loading thing again. I doesn't seem like it would be the drive; the drive doesn't know whether the PC is freshly restarted or coming back from sleep.

A:External Bitlocker drive not working properly after sleep.

I think it may be an explorer problem. I had the problem with the drive again today after awaking my PC, and tried restarting the explorer process. The explorer UI (windows, task bar, start menu, etc.) is gone, but it won't restart and won't go away when I click "end task"

Sorry for the double thread, I figured out this is a better place for help.
Okay so this morning, turned on my PC, everything fine, then a Windows Update started by itself (Im on Windows 7) I said alright, whatever. Then my PC rebooted and this is where everything ****ed up.
First, there was NO letters, all of the letters were replaced by boxes, but I fixed this so moving on.
Second, I keep getting missing DLL files errors that will NOT let me do anything! I can't even open apps (except for chrome and luckily MBAM), even CCLeaner won't open up, and CMD too, and Avast. No matter how many times I tried.
Tried system restoring many times, but it just says "System Restore Failed because of an error" I can't even do sfc /scannow command. Im freaking out because I had this PC for 3 years and all my family albums, files and photos are on this PC and I don't want to do a disk wipe. PLease help me!!!

A:Windows 7 won't function properly since update

FIRST reset windows to let me choose.
then can you go to Installed Window updates and uninstall any that were updated/installed Today.
was it the W10 upgrade??

Try restore after.

I've been using Windows 7 without any problems for a few months. However, recently I've encountered problem with the Internet when returning my laptop from Sleep Mode.

Upon returning from Sleep Mode, my Windows Live! Messenger will load normally and remain working. But the browsers (Firefox, Chrome, etc.) will work for a few minutes and then will stop working, as though they are not connected to the Internet. The strange thing is it only affects the browser. I'm using LAN most of the time. There's once I tried switching on Wireless and I got my Internet on the browsers back. However, the next time when my computer returned from Sleep Mode, the same problem happens to the Wireless connection as well.

Hope someone here can offer me some advice.

A:Internet not working when Windows 7 comes back from Sleep Mode

Try the following repairs. Another possibility is a corrupted non-Windows firewall or security suite.

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Hi everyone,

I'm sure many of you have heard about Windows 10 draining the battery to zero when it's in sleep or hibernate mode, and unfortunately it is happening to my laptop too (HP Pavilion 15 previously on Windows 8.1, no touchscreen). Upon restarting, the scroll would also reverse itself, but I managed to fix that after doing a factory reset and updating the driver from HP's website. I have seen many articles from July saying that Microsoft are teaming up with Intel to fix this, but I haven't yet seen or heard a solution. One of the IT technicians at my local computer store tried to get me to pay him 50 to re-install Windows 10, but I'm not quite *that* technologically challenged (yet)...

I am due to be starting a job next week where I will be leaving my laptop idle (and occasionally unplugged) quite often, sometimes up to four hours a time. Over the past couple of months having Windows 10, I haven't been using my laptop a lot or leaving it idle a lot, so I have been severely underestimating how much stress this issue is going to give me! Surely it can't be good for the battery if it drains itself to zero almost everyday? By any chance, does anyone have a solution to fix this? If that is unlikely, then has anyone got any quick fixes to, at the very least, slow down the battery drain speed?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello, I've recently upgraded to Windows 7, it's pretty cool I like everything about it! just one thing about it is either different, or I'm not using the right settings, although I've had a fairly good look through them. I previously had Windows Vista, and I ALWAYS had it on sleep because I believe it saves on power, and is easy that way so people don't just barge in and use my comp, they'd need my password , so I used to keep it on sleep when I wasn't on it. This includes times where I'd be downloading something, burning or converting something, or doing things such as disk checks and Virus/spyware scans. I used to be able to do all these things with my computer on sleep with Vista, but Windows 7, anything to do with the internet just stops, I'll come back hours later and the download will have stopped, and then it all seems to pick up again, and scans or burning take for EVER they used to be the same speed! Is anyone able to help me out here? Any help would be appreciated thanks!

A:Windows 7 Sleep function

You must have had the Monitor set to sleep on the Vista system, but not the PC, or possibly just the blank Screen Saver. If the PC is in sleep mode, no programs are running. The only activity is monitoring the wakeup devices (Mouse/Keyboard/Modem/LAN/Task Scheduer) to see if the PC should wake up, and keeping the RAM Refreshed so it's contents aren't lost.

Hi guys,

Please help with a keyboard problem on my desktop PC....

I have windows 7. I just discovered that some of the function keys on my generic dell usb keyboard (which doesn't have an F lock button) doesn't work. I say some because I only use some of them

F1 - it just beeps every time i hit it
F2 - it just beeps every time i hit it
F5 - it brings up my unikeynt program in the front
F3 - it just beeps every time i hit it
HOWEVER, F11 key does work, toggling between normal and full screen

I tried switching to another generic usb keyboard and have the same problem, so it's probably not keyboard related. I tried the same function keys within MS excel, and they do work as they are intended.

The function keys worked this morning and nothing was installed since then.

thank you
