Windows Xp Application Failed To Initialize (0xc0000005); Then C:\windows\temp\setup.exe Running Forever

Q: Windows Xp Application Failed To Initialize (0xc0000005); Then C:\windows\temp\setup.exe Running Forever

Houston, I have a problem. It started yesterday when attempting to log on to a user account, McAffee states that it detected a virus and recommends a scan. I click 'ok' once or twice and the following message appears: application failed to initialize (0xc0000005).

After reading through some of your posted solutions, I had to C-A-D to get task manager up so I could run Microsoft Anti-Spyware. It detected one and I removed it. I then started a McAffee scan and it found another one (maybe more, but I fell asleep waiting for it to finish). When I logged back in, McAffee was saying the same thing, I C-A-D and a c:\ window appears saying c:\WINDOWS\temp\setup.exe

It has been like this for 45+ minutes. I can attempt to shut it down, and it asks if you're sure (which I am not) so I cancelled out to let it run. The cursor inside the c:\ box appears to be moving around every 30 to 90 seconds. . . leading me to believe that it is doing something.

When I fire McAffee backup, I cannot find the one file it found before I fell asleep (not in quarentine anyway).

Any recommendations?

Preferred Solution: Windows Xp Application Failed To Initialize (0xc0000005); Then C:\windows\temp\setup.exe Running Forever

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

PS Earlier this week I had to install NAV fixabwiz to rid my self of a trojan virus. After running following its instructions to disable windows auto-restore and running it, the laptop did behave okay for a day or two.

Sorry guys I'm new here and I don't know much about computers so I decided to post this question here in General Chat.Well this is the problem:the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application. (it pops up twice)I've researched this topic on Google and I have noticed a lot of other people have had the same problem but I think this is a special case.See, whenever I turn on my laptop on everything goes well and even gives me the option of selecting F2 to to configure things on the computer. But when I get to the main page where I'm supposed to log in this message pops up:the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application. So then I try to click Ctrl, Alt, and Del to open up the task menu but nothing happens. I noticed the keys are not unresponsive because when I click Caps Lock the little light flashes on.So please can somebody help me out with this huge problem, or is my laptop over and done with?EDIT: Moved to a more appropriate forumWe'll just assume XP-MG

I would prefer to move this topic to the OS forum that it relates to. Would you please let us know?

I have seen several postings on this topic, but it seems that every one is a little different, so I am posting my dilemma. I am sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place.
As of about 10 days ago, several programs will not open. Instead, I get the error window that states "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application." As far as I can tell, this error message affects these programs: Ultraplayer, Windows Media Player, Sound Recorder, Logitech Setpoint, Quicktime Player, Real One Message Center, and Total Recorder.

My computer is a desktop, HP Pavilion a1020n. Windows XP Home Ed., SP 3. Windows updates are current. Run Avast antivirus software and usually have Windows Firewall turned on.

Here's what I've tried:
Tried to uninstall and reinstall several programs. Uninstall usually won't happen. Have tried new installs over the old, but it doesn't "take."
10 days ago - went back to a restore point. Did no good.
Have run Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy several times, including today (May 2). Today Ad-Aware found and removed a few items from the families of Cookies, Win32 Trojan Spy, and Win32 Tr\.\per Delf. Spybot found nothing today.
Have run CCleaner to clean up registry.
Ran Hijack This and saved the log. I can post it if it is needed.

I've considered reformatting the hard drive, but really don't want to resort to that.

A:Services.exe - Application Error. The Application Failed To Initialize (0xc0000005).

Well...it seems to me (I may be misreading) but that system belonged to a unnamed 3d party, which had the operating license.

If I had found such system, the first thing I would have done is wipe it clean (because I don't like using someone else's data which they've decided to trash) and to give myself a good start at seeing if the system worked properly.

Then I would have done a clean install.

That's the only way that I know how to go from a series of unknowns...to a known good, working system.

Worst case scenario: The system is highly infected.

Best case scenario: The system has O/S or malware problems or a combination thereof.

Hi all,

Few days ago my computer got the Trojan.Vundo. Norton 2003 pro didn't manage to prevent but also to remove the virus. I uninstaleld Norton and I install a trial version of NOD32. Today, I scanned again my hard disc and no threads were found. But still dll files of the Trojan existed. I went to startup and I deactivated the: kdfgj83ke.dll, mlDJwVmJ.dll and nnnlmMcd.dll files that were spoted as files of the virus. When i rebooted by pc, I received the message: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)". It appears 2 times after I login and then I can see only the background. Nothing else. I tried safe mode, safe mode with network, VGA, recover system in previous condition. But nothing worked.

I have XP SP2, 2,99 GHZ, 500MB RAM

Thanks

Why did you uninstall Norton?

I hope you realize ANY AntiVirus Utility CANNOT protect you against a virus it does not know about yet. That's why you must update your antivirus protection daily.

This is also why you are most vulnerable if you are online all the time. This maximizes the opportunity of getting infected BEFORE an Malware utility can protect you.

From you post, this is what happened to you. The virus infected your system before Norton had it in its protection file, but it did find-remove after the protection update.

Also, are you running an additional Anti-Spyware utility? You should. This is required by my Corporate IT on all desktops. In the division I am IT Tech for, I use Spybot Search & Destroy (donationware), one of several listed by corporate. I have used this at home for years, since my Win98 days, and it's well known and reliable. But note that the limitations that apply to AntiVirus utilities also apply with Anti-Spyware utilities, cannot protect you against spyware that arrives before they know about it.

To maximize your protection, do NOT stay on-line all the time. Shut down your PC or log-off the desktop. Even if you use broadband network connection, there is an easy you can logoff just like a DialUp connection.

Here's how:In Network Connections, right-click the connection and check BOTH boxes in the General tab (see the network icon in Toolbar Tray all the time)
Now drag a SHORTCUT to the network connection where you want it (D... Read more

Hello justmebeingme;

According to this link: Urgent - The application failed to initialize properly - 0xc0000005

You problem could be the Trojan "Haxdoor". It was suggested that AdAware could find and remove it.

Also suggested is to boot to safemode with networking and go to the Panda live scan web site: FREE ANTIVIRUS - Download ActiveScan 2.0 and clean your PC - PANDA SECURITY
and let Panda scan your computer and remove the Trojan.

Hope this helps!

Hi Guys,

So I have been having this issue with a program crashing and displaying a error message. Also just a note, When the icon to start the application is clicked the program automatically displays the error. So I never actually get into the application. The error message reads "application failed to initialize properly 0xc0000005" (0xc0000005 means an access violation memory error occurred)

Now this is odd because the program works on other computers(of all different types)amd64, amd64x2, Intel core2duo, Intel celeron D, and a regular Intel P4 board. All with various different rams and such, leading me to assume this is not a hardware problem.

I have tried to use the built in program error debugger in windows "Dr. Watson" to get a error log. but for some reason the program does write to the file.

If anyone knows of any common problems associated with this error or fixes for it, please let know.

-Thanks

Hello, and welcome to TSF.

Have you tried to defragment or run scandisk? You could also have a bad RAM module. If you can, try to defrag and scandisk first. If neither will run and/or you run them successfully and still have problems then my first suspect would be RAM.

You could open your case and see if you have two or more RAM modules. If you have more than one, you could remove all but one and try to run your computer. If the problem persists then remove the one that was left in and replace it with one of the modules that you removed. Repeat this process with each RAM module one at a time until you have tested all of them. If at some point the computer works then you have found the bad RAM and you can replace it.

If you are uncomfortable opening your case then download and run memtest86. If you test the RAM and have a bad module you will still have to open your case to replace any bad modules but at least you will have an idea of the root of your problem.

You might need to borrow somebody's computer at this point, preferably a PC with a CD burner. Do a google search for memtest86. The first link in the search results will take you to their web page. In the black sidebar click 'free download'. The first link will be 'ISO image for creating bootable CD (Windows - zip)'. Click that and download and burn the ISO.

Place the disk in the malfunctioning computer and reboot the computer. The PC should see it during the boot process and begin to run th... Read more

Hi Guys,

So I have been having this issue with a program crashing and displaying a error message. Also just a note, This problem is happening on a windows xp pro machine. When the icon to start the application is clicked the program automatically displays the error.

-Thanks

Hello there lucky,

I am an engineer and i just came across the same problem. If I find out before you I will come back here and post the answer. If you find out please email me. I should think I will have the answer within 24 hours though.

Guessing it's just missing/corrupted windows files but some peeps have same error with single apps such as ie. and they say it's a virus.

When i start up my computer (WinXP SP2), after i get the welcome screen i receive the error msgs "Application Failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)" which pops up about 2-3 times. then my deskop top background image loads but nothing else. All my icons that where on the desktop are gone, i have no task bar at the bottom and no time, just the background desktop image. if i press Atl+Ctr+Del, i get the windows task manager. from there i can run most of my programs, however if I try to open some things such as add/remove programs, I get rundll32 error with the same "Application Failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)".

Hi all,

I had an issue earlier in the week (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/601342/embedded-windows-xp-crash-after-boot/) with a PC that running chkdsk managed to resolve.

Once I was back into the windows environment I decided to run a backup utility.

However, when I tried to install the software it ran into an error during the install and stopped the installation and then automatically undid the installation.

The computer then hung so I had to reboot.

Upon rebooting the system got as far as the Windows XP splash screen before rebooting again.

I managed to switch off the automatic reboots and then the system reported an error with iertutil.dll

Via the Recovery Console I managed to replace iertutil with a good copy and now the system boots but gives me the following message box:

services.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).Click on OK to terminate the application.

However, I can't click OK as the keyboard and mouse don't work (they are plugged into the USB ports and there must not be any power on them as there's no red light under the optical mouse).

The very same thing happens in Safe Mode too so I can't run in Safe Mode.

Booting to last known good configuration does exactly the same too.

I ran chkdsk /r again but that didn't help.

Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this?

Many thanks :-)

Sorry guys I'm new here and I don't know much about computers so I decided to post this question here in General Computer Security.

Well this is the problem:

the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application. (it pops up twice)

I've researched this topic on Google and I have noticed a lot of other people have had the same problem but I think this is a special case.

See, whenever I turn on my laptop on everything goes well and even gives me the option of selecting F2 to to configure things on the computer. But when I get to the main page where I'm supposed to log in this message pops up:

the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.

So then I try to click Ctrl, Alt, and Del to open up the task menu but nothing happens. I noticed the keys are not unresponsive because when I click Caps Lock the little light flashes on.

So please can somebody help me out with this huge problem, or is my laptop over and done with?

Ok whoever can fix my comp is a total geek

Well yesterday i was normally doing stuff on my computer and accidentally uninstalled something i didn't think i needed (and I'm not sure if its causing the problem either) so it said to uninstall the program you had to restart your comp, which of i did of course. Then a error popped up saying explorer.exe the application failed to initialize properly error Oxc0000005 . I know explorer.exe is a process that shows everything like your icons and start menu and wallpaper etc. so i couldn't see any icons and had to use task manager to open FF and now I'm here typing this post.
So can any of you had this problem or can help? I would appreciate it so much

PS: the think i uninstalled was IE 8 from add/remove programs and Internet explorer from add/remove windows components

Hi,

After scouring the internet for countless hours i have decided to look for help here. I have had this problem lately with a few programs, most recently sibels 5 music notation software: When i install the program, the installation process seems to go smoothly enough, but when i go to start up the program i get the error message "The apllication failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the program" Popping up twice and then nothing happens.

I have tried reinstalling the program, doing a system restore, scanning my computer for spyware/viruses (just in case:P) and running the program in different compatibility modes but so far they all produce the same original result of giving me that error message.

Any ideas on how to solve this predicament? All help appreciated.

then I did the 'trashing preferences" and now everytime I try to launch

Have also set the DEP on and off, still nothing.
Everything else on my rig is working and launching fine (like Acid, other programs)
just not PT, wondering if I should uninstall and reinstall or what?
