Portable Hard Drive

Q: Portable Hard Drive

I have a portable Hard Drive, and i have a problem
I partitioned my hard drive a while ago, into different sections, for example, Music, TV Eppisodes and a Hard drive named 'Portable HDD'
I am able to acess TV Eppisodes and Portable HDD but not Music

When i try to access it i get this error

I then opened ESAEUS partition manager to have a look what the problem is and this is all i see

Ive noticed that all my other hard dives are Primary and this is logical.
What do i do to get this working please? I've tried to scan disk for errors and get this message

Thanks for reading this.

Preferred Solution: Portable Hard Drive

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

You might try partition recovery. But it looks like the partition is gone. It may be easier just to create a new partition and restore your backups.

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

A:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

Sorry I can't help as I haven't used either, my external drive is a Seagate Expansion so not what you would call a portable one as it's used on a desktop computer, don't have a laptop.

I suppose it comes down to what you can afford and which one would give you all the features you need, have you read any reviews about them and if so which comes out the better buy ?

I have a portable hard drive (I/O Magic)
80 gigs

I love it, it's small.
And I can take it around with me.
I use it very often.

However, I was using it on my laptop today and I accidentally let it drop onto the carpet. The fall was only about 1 1/2 feet tops but it obviously did something negative. So, my problem is that it doesn't load up anymore when I hook the USB into my laptop or desktop. I think a wire got loose inside and that's why the drive isn't spinning. i don't know, I need help! The light still works on the portable harddrive but that's about it. I have a lot of data on this drive that I can't afford to lose!

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Hi Bessy1, and welcome to TSG.

There is no guarantee that I will have a solution for you, but it might help someone else here to help you if you let us know the following:

1) Brand and model number of the DVD player

2) URL of the web site where you are purchasing the downloads. Have you been using the same site for the movies that do play and the new ones that do not play?

3) The file format (file name extension) of the old files that do play and new files that will not play

Hi. Does anyone know what might make a second hard drive (for a Toshiba laptop computer)
unreadable? I moved from the Czech Republic to Poland recently, and noticed that my portable hard drive is apparently "empty" of all data. I know that's not possible, because it was working fine before I left Czech and there's a lot of stuff on it.

Basically I have all my course material for the past 10 years stored on this portable drive! (I am a history professor). I certainly did not delete anything, so where could all of my data have disappeared to?

I went to a firm in Warsaw an they told me it would cost me $1,300 to recover my data using their
company! However a computer science major here in Debrcen told me that date rcovery from them would be there are data recovery programs on the web that can help me rescue my data.

If you can offer me any pointers on type of proble, I would surely appreciate it!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello, I have a CIRAGO USB 2.0 High Speed 320GB Portable hard drive. It has been really unstable, slow, and erroneous lately. At first I thought it was my PC itself, so I went inside and cleaned out all the dust and made sure everything was in the right spot and functioning. Then I turned the PC back on, and plugged my Portable HD in, but it recognizes as Local Disk(G: ) -as opposed to what it always recognized it as, which was CIRAGO(G: ). And If i select it it tells me

The Disk in Drive G is not formatted. Would you like to format now?

And when i press yes, it says

The disk in drive G cannot be formatted.

So I have no clue whats going on at this point, so I try Chkdsk /f, it's worked in the past for hard drive acting up. When I run Chkdsk /f G:, I get this error

Cannot open volume for direct assess.

So now im completely confused. It went from working fine to being slow and erroneous, now it just doesnt work at all.

Additional Info-Running XP SP3, PHD is USB and I've tried it on the other USB ports, same thing. Also, I have data on this hard drive, and since these weird things have been happening to it, I haven't added or deleted anything off it

Hello (and thank you for any help..)

I got a virus/malware on my laptop and moved some files over to a portable hard drive prior to reinstalling the OS. I was not aware that doing so would infect the hard drive, but it did. (Yes, dumb on my part.. I know.)

Prior to knowing it was infected I hooked it up to my desktop pc and also infected that.

Long story short, I reloaded the OS on my laptop and installed a bunch of spyware/malware programs and then hooked up the portable drive to it to have them run and clean the drive.

Is this the best way to go about cleaning/removing malware/virus from a portable hard drive? My concern is that (even though I have basically run all these programs multiple times) the portable hard drive may still contain something and when I go to use it again it will re infect a clean pc.

Any help on this would be appreciated. (Maybe there is really no way of telling 100% if the drive i absolutely clean.. ) I am mainly concerned about transmitting malware/virus that can infect my pc and allow others to see my passwords or bank info etc.

Is this hard drive never to be trusted again or??

Thanks in advance,

A:Iomega Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive

It's not backup if there's only one copy, regardless.

The first thing to determine is whether it is the enclosure that has gone bad or the disk inside. Disassemble the enclosure, remove the disk and connect it internally to another desktop computer. See if it comes up on it.

You may have to go to the disk manufacturer's web site for proper jumper settings.

When I did the reboot. I can't access any information and it refuses to show up as my E:/ in My Computer like it used to. I'm all out of options.. I really want my music and pics back.. Please help.

I have a portable Hard Drive designed for a 2.0 port. I used it on a computer with a 1.0 port. I was moving a pretty sizable amount of data and it took awhile, especially since a 2.0 device works slowly in a 1.0 port. Iv recently purchased a Western Digital 120GB Portable Hard Drive USB2.0 5400rpm 2MB Cache Retail Passport Drive it comes with a 8" long Hi-Speed USB to mini-USB Type B. Considering the length of the cable and that I'm using it with a desktop and not a laptop i thought i would buy a USB extension cable to make life easier. I purchased a Belkin Pro Series USB Extension Cable 1.8m which has a 4 PIN USB Type A - male to a 4 PIN USB Type A - female. The USB extension was plugged into a USB2 port on the PC and then the i plugged the portable hard drive into that alas i got nothing from it. I know that the portable hard drive sources its power from the usb port and tried it without the USB extension cable and it worked fine.

My question is why?

Do i need a 5 pin usb type A to a 5 pin usb type B extension cable or simple i can't use an extension cable with it?

What is the difference between a 4pin and a 5pin, is it something to do with devices sourcing their power from the usb port?

also one more thing has any one had any dealings with these USB cables that use two usb ports to produce double the power

Cheers in advance guys.

I've bought myself a portable USB hard drive.
Now, using some cute programs I think I can
1) set it up to select a partition to bootup on bootup
2) use the ultimate boot cd to access it and copy/clone a windowsxp hard drive to a partition on the usb drive (bit iffy with this, what do people think?) and be able to copy the clone to a new pc.
3) Install windows xp on a partition with anti virus and spyware killers to run it across badly infected pc's that can't be booted up without windows crashing.
4) install ghost.exe on it and save a hard drive image.
5) Keep the software in yet another partition that the drive came with as it really is pretty damn smart stuff (its a western digital 80gb)
6) install a usb version of netboot disk.

Am I dreaming?
Have I run out of partitions I can set as active?
If I can do all of these things I'll have a pretty useful little device for doing IT support so I'm keen to try.
I'm after ideas on what are the obvious issues.
I know that the HP usb boot software will solve the initial issue of making the drive bootable.(I think)
Input please!

A:Disappearing portable hard drive

Typically...when a drive disappears...it has a problem.

Since it's an external drive, it could the enclosure the drive is in...it could be the actual hard drive itself.

My suggestion would be to remove the drive from enclosure...connect it directly to a working system...and see if the system picks it up properly.

If it does, then I would suggest moving all files from the drive immediately...and then running the appropriate hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic (long test, not short) on it.

If My Computer does not reflect the drive, but Disk Management reflects as either an empty volume, a RAW volume, or an unknown file system...then your best effort will be to try data recovery software.

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. Recently bought a new portable with Windows 7 Pro. I have several portable hard drives that I use, two of them are almost constantly usb'd to the computer, and there are two others I use occasionally. At first the "constant" drives were called "F" and "G" drives by the computer. This was great. Even if I unhooked them and plugged them back in they remained the same. Several days ago I had to remove them and on plugging them back in to the computer they are now "H" and "I" drives. I've tried to find out where to change the directory, I think that's what the "F" and "G" are called, but can't figure it out. I would really like them to keep the same name as it's easier for me and my auto backups get goofed up when they are changed.
Thanks for suggestions.

Hi All.

I have a 2.5inch HDD inside an external case which is my primary means of carrying my data around.

Everything works hunky dory at home, however when I take it to university, there appears to be a policy which disables write access to the drive as it comes up as a Hard-Drive, whereas other nand based devices come up as removable drives.

Firstly, is it likely that windows (vista) is applying a policy to all hard drives attached to prevent write access (to most folders). Secondly, if so, how do I change the disk so it identifies as a removable drive as opposed to local hard drive.

(In Disk management, the external hdd comes up as a basic disc, whereas my flash drive is listed as removable)

A:Portable Hard Drive not working

Sounds like the drive has failed. Try it in another machine.
Use the originals that you backed up to make a new backup as soon as possible in case your main hard drive fails (and it will, eventually, and often when you need it the most).

Portable drives are good for backups, because you still have the originals elsewhere, but they are very delicate and fail with just a mild bump, so are not reliable as storage media of first choice.

I've seen this problem with alot of STORAGE DEVICE
It happen more often with Laptop because they usually have Card reader.
So it makes couple drives like e:, f:, g:.
Storage device tries to install themself with the drive letter next to CDROM
c: - HD1
d: - HD2 or CDROM
e: - Mass storage device (maybe for card readers)
So your external HD tries to have the E: drive (probably a bug)

The other day whilst backing up my computer to my portable hard drive for the first time, my flatmate disconnected my hard drive accidentally.

Now when I connect my hard drive to my computer (Vista Ultimate 64-bit) or any other computer (I've tried XP, Vista 32-bit and 7 64-bit), a balloon pops up from the notification area saying that the new hardware is being installed. It then says that it was successfully install and is ready to use. However, the hard drive does not appear under windows explorer.

When I open device manager I can find the hard drive and it says it is working properly. When I open computer managment and then go to disk management it says that disk 2 (the hard disk) is not initialized. When I right click it and select initialize, it asks me what partition style is on the disk (master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partition style). No matter what one I select (I've tried both) I get a pop up saying there is an error.

How do I initialize and access/retrieve the information on my hard drive? If this isn't a possibility, how do I reformat the entire hard drive so that I can use it again? At the moment its useless to me.

If you need any more info, please just ask! Thanks in advance.

Just bought a Seagate FreeAgent Go 250GB hard drive to back up the computer, which is fairly old now. The problem is - my laptop only has 1 USB port and the hard drive requires two USB ports.

Am I able to connect the Power and Data cable to my computer and back up while connecting the Power only cable to another computer at the same time?
