How automatic metric work for the same metric in windows 7

Q: How automatic metric work for the same metric in windows 7

Hi all,

I have 2 adapter, same model same speed. When I use "route print" command to check the table, they are the same metric.

I need to use the designated adapter to connect a server. How can I make sure this adapter is higher priority in the route table.
Remark: This PC is not allow to set the route table. I have to use the automatic metric algorithm.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm looking for an solution for an random issue on my clients computers (Windows 7 or 10).
They connected to an business vpn with Juniper network connect.
As usual, to be sure the computer use the vpn network to make dns reolution etc... the virtual network card created by juniper is using metric 1 to have the top priority.
That's working well since 1 or 2 years.
For an unknown reason When they connect to the vpn some computers keep the internet gateway instead of using the one provided by juniper vpn...
The solution we've found is to edit the juniper metric from 1 to 2 and after ipconfig /flushdns the route table is using the vpn gateway..the pb is, juniper create an virtual card each connections, so it is deleted when the users disconnect his vpn session.
I don't know why but the computers seems not update the route table when connecting to vpn..
We tried :
 - changing from ethernet to wireless or 3G/4G internet source
 - change the network card order in advanced parameters from the networking center..
 - route -f is not workingg

Do you have any idea..?

I have had windows 7 for a few weeks and every time the PC is rebooted the Metric for both the Lan (172.17) and Wifi(192.169)goes back to 20, the Lan is set to Automatic and the wifi is set to 10, has anybody seen this problem before?

Active Routes:
Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 20 20

A:problem with windows 7 not using correct metric

Sounds quite bizzare, Windows assigns a lower metric to the gateway it can communicate the fastest with, but in this case both have been assigned 20.
If you've manually assigned a gateway and metric you should see that in the list of persistent routes.

I wonder if your issue is similar to that in http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/47280-how-configure-multiple-gateways.html

I'm stumped and have emailed MS as it works as expected in Win XP

I have a question that I can't find the answer for, I've been searching like crazy but keep finding the same responses which have in my case proven useless.
The situation is this: I have one router and one computer, the computer has two network interface cards which are both connected to the router and given IP addresses. I have made the metrics in Windows such that normal traffic SHOULD always choose NIC 1 and I have in the application "Tixati" set it manually to use NIC 2. I have then set my firewall to only allow the application "Tixati" to use NIC 2 while blocking it from using NIC 1. So in theory everything on my computer should use NIC 1 except "Tixati" which should use NIC 2.
The problem: The issue is that for some reason Windows will sometimes think it's a good idea to just straight up switch over to using NIC 2 for ALL traffic, even though it has a waaaay higher metric (static permanent routes) and the firewall is blocking access for the applications on that interface, which results in the applications being straight up blocked. This is temporarily solved by disabling and enabling NIC 1... Until it happens again.
The cause: I just straight up don't know, I do however think it has something to do with Windows probably trying to use a different NIC at the slightest hint of an issue with the main NIC, it often happens during web browsing and I even found one specific website that seemingly caused this issue every time I reloaded... Lately, I've noticed all of my applications (Word, Photoshop, etc.) use the metric system of measurement. I'm not sure why this started, but I'd like it to go back to the imperial system. Do you know how I can change this default setting? Thanks!

A:Metric system!

I don't know about Photoshop, but in Word you can go to

Tools -> Options -> General tab and check that the measurement units are in inches

Entering "measurement" in Windows Help gained this information:

To change the way your computer displays numbers
Open Regional and Language Options in Control Panel.
On the Regional Options tab, under Standards and formats, click Customize.
On the Numbers tab, specify any changes you want to make.
Among items you can change are the decimal symbol and list separator, the format used for negative numbers and leading zeros, and the measurement system (U.S. or metric).

To open Regional and Language Options, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options.

Hey guys,
I am using a 3G modem (Virgin Mobile MC760). In short; I have 2 connections; 1 is wired ethernet and the other is this 3G modem. I want to be able to use the 3G modem in a guest Vmware system while still using my regular ethernet for everything else in the host. (Unfortunately this modem doesn't work in VM so I am stuck having 2 internet connections in Win7 and trying to route this).

I have read up on metric values but heres the problem. I set the ethernet for a metric value of 1 and the 3g connection as 9999, ethernet alone works fine, as soon as I connect the 3g modem it takes priority and changes my metric value of the ethernet higher and creates a default gateway, when my ethernet is The only way around this is if I disconnect my ethernet and reconnect it, it will then take priority and have both be connected and use ethernet.

Is there any solution to this?

I looked forward to opening 'publisher' for the first time to see if I could produce an item to fit into a magazine/newspaper. I made my initial box-size and then discovered that IT'S ALL IN IMPERIAL! Considering that most of the people in the world use Metric and don't mess up our engineering and space stations by making stuff in imperial, why would Microsoft imagine that imperial works here. We went Metric in '71... Put it in Metric and let the yanks find the box marked 'Imperial'...
Anyhoo, I'm looking for the box to tick to choose to have the scales in Metric please, as I can't find it simply. Please may someone tell me...?

A:Changing scales to metric? (Publisher, PPT, etc...)

The horizontal and vertical rulers in Microsoft Publisher 2007 can be changed to display a different type of measurement unit. By default, the rulers in Publisher display inches, but you can change them to a variety of other measurement units.
For microsoft Publisher 2007.

1 Once you're in your document, choose the "Tools" menu, and click "Options" to open the "Options" dialog box.2 Select the "General" tab at the top of the "Options" dialog box, if necessary, to display the basic settings for Microsoft Publisher.3 Click the arrow to display the "Measurement units" drop-down list from the "Options" dialog box. These are the different types of measurements you can display on the Publisher rulers. Choose the measurement you want from choices that include inches, centimeters, picas, points or pixels.4 Click the "OK" button to close the "Options" dialog box and return to your Publisher document. Your rulers will display with the measurement you picked. Use the same process to switch back to the original measurement or to choose a new unit of measurement.

And of course, ALSO WITH METRO please. It seems independent of the "real" OS.

The company I work for has recently gotten a new Internet connection at their farm across the street. Originally the time clock was placed there and monitored over the LAN on the computer that I am at right now. Now that there is a new connection I need to know how to connect the time clock on the other internet connection to this PC. Networking has never been my strong suit. any help would be appreciated!

P.S. The time Clock is an anviz EP300 and the PC is running windows 8.1

A:Solved: Connect Bio-metric time clock to another network?

Hi Bumbers, and welcome to TSG.

Does the new connection at the other building have at least one static public IP address? If not, things may get a bit more complicated.

Beyond that, you will need to set up whatever modems and routers are being used across the street to port forward from the Internet public IP address to the private IP address of the time clock on the LAN. Having the time clock use a static IP address on the LAN, rather than get its IP address via DHCP would also simplify things.

It appeared to me that only registered users on the Anviz web site can download product manuals. I have no idea if or how the time clock can be properly configured to use a static IP address, the port numbers used, or the type of security it offers. Once you have port forwarding configured, the time clock will be exposed to attacks from the Internet.

After you have everything configured at the other location, you should be able to use the public IP address of the other location to access the clock from your location.

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and hope to solve my problem with some expert guidance.

The problems started with me trying to create a shared file in onenote, which could be edited and viewed by all users of my computer. In the UAC, it asked me about some permission about "INTERACTIVE" and "SERVICE", if I remember right. I allowed it to do so, and hoped to set up the notebook in the public documents folder.

But, since then, the libraries (Documents, music, etc) reported being "Unresponsive" when I clicked on "Includes: 2 locations".

Also, the "See more results" link in the start menu reports an error as in the picture:

I recently installed Autocad Architecture Metric (US) in my computer, and then tried opening it in Guest account, but it just shows the following:

Then it shows:

And then it disappears, and nothing happens. I'm unable to open the software even when I applied read&exec permissions for guest in the folder containing the program. Path: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD Architecture 2011 (The folder containing the program)... (acad.exe)

All the other apps like chrome, pdf, etc are running without any problem, as this problem arose after their installation.

Also, please tell me why this app runs in guest account only if I select "Run as administrator". Other standard accounts are fine. Thanks!

I have been to the section of Win7 personalization where metrics are stored for text display.

If you look at the window options section for borders and such, and select a metric in ("Change Windows colors and metrics" will get you there in the search box) -- everything seems to be in there except the area called window text. Window text is in the illustrated screen area. I can make a screen shot if necessary.

Going to the selections that default at an item called Desktop then right click to open, Window text is not there. An Item called Window (single word) is.

The goal is to have my files and folders show larger in -- Explorer I guess-- and in the network file folders I have in an old style workgroup set up for the home.

I have tried all of the options at the metrics screen but have failed to get a simple folders and files list to display in a larger font.

I cannot get automatic updates to work on my Windows XP

A:cannot get automatic updates to work on my Windows XP

I`m guessing you`ve already tried fiddling with the update options such as `Automatic`, `Download but don`t install`, `Notify but don`t download` and of course, switching it off, rebooting and then switching it on again. Also make sure it`s set to Automatic in Services as well and not Disabled.

If the computer`s been repaired at some point using the XP CD, the MS updates are turned off and you`ll have to manually go to the MS update site, download at least one update and then it`ll switch itself back on again. (See link below)

I am pretty non technical so simple answers would be much appreciated

A:IE9 will not work after Windows 7 automatic updates

Hello cheesedoff and welcome to Seven Forums.

Use the same system restore point to restore your computer to a date/time prior to when the Updates downloaded. Then turn off automatic updates. Go to Control Panel > Windows Update > Change settings > select Never check for updates > OK your way out of the open dialog boxes.

Once you've turned off automatic updating, you can manually check for updates by clicking that button in the second screen shot. Windows Update will show you all available updates (critical/important and optional.) They all might have a check mark next to them. Uncheck everything including any optional updates.

Once they've all been unchecked, start with the critical/important. Make a note of the KB number. Put a check in the first update and install it. If it installs correctly, reboot your system. Try using IE. If everything works, install the next update, reboot, try IE. Do this with each remaining update installing just one at a time, rebooting, and checking IE. All updates will either install correctly with no IE problems or if any update fails to install or causes problems you'll know exactly which update is the problem. You can ignore that update for the time being and continue installing the rest of them. After all have been installed you can re-try the problematic update.

I realize this will be a much slower process but it usually results in a trouble free installation of multiple updates. If you feel adventurous and want to ... Read more

This kind of problem I am seeing for the first time in my life without having a clue....

The pc is own by one of my friend.First foolish thing he did was to put some customized xp into his computer.
Suddenly today morning he started to scream on phone about this problem.I am not able to see the desktop.

The problem is whenever the computer starts windows media player starts up,along with 3 search windows, one contain no search item, another contain "01" in the search item , another contain "10010" as search contain (the string may be different, I can't remember exactly).Closing one of them shutting down the system completely (No restart). It is like someone is opening a search box in front of me and typing the search string.

The problem was occurring even internet not connected. While shutting down, sometime it showed "some no of users are connected, shutting down will cause problem " like that (zombie system??!!)

So I instructed to remove windows xp, format c: and install windows 7 from original disk. Much of my surprise, just after installation it started showing the same symptom.(Internet was not connected.)

After set up with internet.I connect it via teamviewer, check msconfig

-- I check the processes , no suspicious process was running.

Hopefully a new and exciting one for the experts.

Some weeks ago my desktop (Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit) started crashing sometimes, mostly when I put it into suspend mode. It could generally be restarted by powering up again, sometimes a couple of times. I didn't do anything unusual at the time such as major new hardware or programs.

Now the problem is systematic and I can't really boot anymore in normal mode. Windows 7 hangs on the screen with the four-colored animated window early in the process.

I've tried:

* The auto-repair option when booting. This reports an error for which no solution is known:

5 ExternalMedia
6 2
7 NoRootCause
Operating system 6.1.7600.
"Gebietsschema" (German word) 1031

* The repair tools on my Windows 7 installation disc. Again no joy.

* Re-installing Windows 7. I did this as an "upgrade", not as a completely fresh install, as I couldn't face re-installing programs and getting user data off and on. The re-install itself did seem to finish. But every time the computer had to be restarted it would freeze. I then turned it off and on manually, and it continued as expected.

* sfc /scannow

* Memory test

* Booting with a protocol file (F8, ntbtlog.txt).

* Fixing the master boot record.

so i've just come across this information about ddrescue:

'Automatic merging of backups: If you have two or more damaged copies of a file, cdrom, etc, and run ddrescue on all of them, one at a time, with the same output file, you will probably obtain a complete and error-free file. This is so because the probability of having damaged areas at the same places on different input files is very low. I looked at the other thread. Assuming you now have a clean system, you should be able to do Windows updates. You didn't tell where it stops.
When you get there, does it begin scanning your computer or do you get an error? If error, they now have automatic answers - if you just follow their links to fix, they'll tell you to add 3 Microsoft urls in your Internet Explorer. Also do permit some ActiveX components to load and run. They're needed for updates.
Then after you do all that, click on ZoneAlarm client and on the Main tab just turn off privacy completely, just for this one job. After you're able to download the updates, turn privacy back on. I found that it was not enough in v6.1 to change Microsoft site settings. It has to be done on the Main tab. I repeat, TEMPORARY switch only.

Got myself into a pickle when I hit cancel in the middle of a Windows automatic update so that I could save or send a long e-mail. Now I cannot shut down. On the screen are two error boxes One titled Microsoft.NET frameowrk, the other titled Document Viewer.

When I go to Microsoft's Fix It, it tells me that an update is in progress and must complete before it can do anything.

When I get the box to restart the computer, I click restart now, but nothing happens.

When I go to the Start Menu, I can click on shut down, but I have to admit, I haven't stayed around to see where it is getting stuck. I leave and come back and the boxes are still there.

I copied the information in the Microsoft .NET framework box, and although it is long, I am copying it in here below.

Thanks to anyone who can guide me on what to do to fix this situation!!!
BTW - I used to do a lot with C: in the old DOS machines but I haven't done any of that stuff since Windows arrived. Just as bad with cars since catalytic converters arrived -- I am REALLY old!

A:Automatic update stuck and Fix it won't work

I would try running the chkdsk /r command. Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in new screen and hit Enter. Reboot the system.

The system should run the command before booting into Windows, it will boot into Windows automatically when complete.

Hi All - I'm new here and need some help, please.

System Specs: Dell Inspiron
Windows 8 Home Premium
Office 365

I was in the middle of doing a presentation the other day and received a pop up saying the system needed to shut down and update. I hit the "delay" button, but the system continued to count down and then shut off, restarted and for the next 27 minutes I couldn't use the system as it went through the update process. This was enormously frustrating and embarrassing since I was trying to do a client presentation at the time. After this debacle, I reset the update option in Windows to "always ask before downloading or installing updates" and thought this would resolve the problem, allowing me to choose when to download and install any updates. However, this morning, I was working on the laptop (thankfully not when I was trying to do anything important) and the exact same thing happened again. The update options are still set to ask before doing downloads or installs. Can someone, please, tell me how to stop this from occurring again?

FYI: I am not a computer expert, so I'd appreciate an explanation that is designed for the less knowledgeable. Thanks folks -

A:Win 8 automatic updates interrupting work

I've noticed this too. I have selected to delay an update but it restarted regardless, I also had a warning come up that it will restart my PC in two days in order to complete updates. With Windows 7 I would periodically go through manually updating my PC, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday, but have found that many updates don't install correctly when I try and do this with Windows 8, so it would be interesting to see if this is an issue or if it's just something that I didn't set up right when I installed Windows.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, when I try to use Windows Update I get the following error.

Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting. To ensure that these services are enabled:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click the service name, and then click Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
5. Verify that the service status is started.

If this does not resolve the problem you may request help from one of the following resources.

For self-help options:
Windows Update Response Center

I've set the sevice to 'Automatic' and it is starting with the computer but the error keeps occuring.

Hello. I have an ideapad z580. It was functioning pretty well until I travelled to China. It started freezing randomly, didnt restart for approx 10 min etc. And finally today it crashed after I restarted it. I can't reach windows, it says preparing automatic repair, and fails, giving a screen says "a required device isnt connected or cannot be accessed". And adds that I need to use recovery tools. I didn't get any cds because of OKR. I restarted with the novo button. Selected recovery. 'Loading files' appeared, waited nearly 5 min and a blue screen with a sad face appeared. So I can't reach windows, cant recover it, in another country with nothing but a smartphone and internet connection. I didnt install any softwares, updated my OS to windows 10 a month ago. If there is a solution Ill be glad because I need the pc and my documents in the following days. Thank you for your help.

About a week ago I started having to sign into sites that were "remember me" before. Why is this? Happened right after the last big update (17 total). Annoying to have to continually enter name and password all the time.

Probably because you deleted your cookies/site data.

I have been lots of problems with IE7 recently, and I have just spent 6 hours researching it on the net. When through automatic update the computer tried to update IE7 a few days ago, the update failed. Then I noticed that the bar from IE& containing the Files, Views, Internet options etc disappeared. At that point windows update still worked. Tried system restore, it stopped working (said could not restore), and also now when I tried to launch IE7, the windows error box comes up (IE needs to close etc). Another message also says that IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe cannot be found in that specific place, although it is there. I tried to reinstall IE7, the installation seems to be happening, but then displays a notice that it failed. I tried to remove IE7 via Add/Remove program, again to no avail. As for system restore, I managed to get it working again (with all the previous restore point deleted of course). Basically, now my main worry is that I can no longer use Automatic Updates, since they all run through IE. I cannot change its default to Firefox. When I click on Update, the IE box comes up which says it has to close. I would be grateful for any suggestions as to how to fix this problem with IE. Thanking you.

So....285-page document. It's a novel, so scene changes as well as 1st paragraph of new chapters are NOT indented. I have an issue where sometimes I want to break a paragraph into two and start a new paragraph. Usually it works, but occasionally it just drops the text down a line w/o the paragraph indent. Sure I can hit tab, but the problem is that I've been warned editors HATE having a bunch of tabs in the doc....I did a "replace all" and got rid of all tabs. Fine, but it also meant I had to go back and hand-fix dozens of scene changes to get them right again. So how do I fix the formatting so I automatically get a paragraph indent, w/o hitting tab, or risking having the existing indents/scene changes go wacky again? Thanks...hope I explained it well....not sure....

So every time automatic disk repair won't work, it says there's a problem with srttrail.txt. So I tried looking at the logs to see what the problem was and nothing stood out(not sure what to look for but nothing flashed red lights as to there being a problem)and the file doesn't exist if I try to open it so I can't delete it. Then I tried refreshing but the disk was locked. I tried to create a new partition with no success due to there not being enough space or something. Then I torrented a copy of Windows 8 to load on from a different comp, but I'm not getting the option to load it from a flash drive in troubleshooting. Not sure what other options I have, if any. I'm open to anything, even if that means losing everything on my computer, I don't care at this point. I'm on an asus x551ca if that matters

A:Automatic disk repair and pretty much everything else won't work

First off, lose the illegal copy of Windows 8.  There is a forum rule which states:
No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures.
You can download a legal copy of Windows 8.1 from Microsoft.  There is no need to use the illegal copy.
Let's rebuild the BCD (Boot Configuration Data).
Press the Windows key and the X key at the same time.
In the menu that opens click/tap on Command Prompt (Admin), this will open the Elevated Command Prompt.
When the Elevated Command Prompt opens copy and paste bootrec /rebuildbcd in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.
You will see the following.
Scanning all disks for Windows installations.
This may take a while, please do not stop the scan.
If this was successful you will receive the following message.
Successfully scanned Windows installations.
Total identified Windows installations: 0
The operation completed successfully.

I have an ASUS P4P800 deluxe motherboard, Intel P4 2.6 GHz, ASUS V9520. Everything worked fine until I installed XP Service Pack 2.

The problem: the automatic (timed) suspend mode (from windows power management) does not work any more as is should. It works only sometimes (intermittently), for reasons I am not able to find out. It does not matter whether or not I install any USB devices.

According to MS, it is my system that is not SP2 compatible. (Expected answer).

Is there anyone observing the same kind of problem? It is really a pitty that I cannot rely anymore on this very handy feature (the automatic standby mode). I tried to install a fresh XP-SP2, same problem.

A:Incompatibility with SP2 ? Automatic suspend mode won't work

According to MS, it is my system that is not SP2 compatible. (Expected answer).

Can you please show where you got the information that causes you to believe this ?

Also, please define your language better. Are you talking about "Hibernate", "Standby" or something else.

Also, please describe your symptoms. What is or is not happening ?

a friend of mine just installed Norton 2005 after uninstalling 2004 (the trial that came with his computer). He had trouble with the old one too that when the automatic live updates run, it will post the message that he needs to check his internet connection as he seems to not be connected. He has a cable modem and is always on.

Now, he told me that he CAN download the updates manually, just the automatic ones won't work. It is set for automatic, and his Internet connection is set for broadband/cable, but he can't get the automatic updates. He also already did what the symantec website suggested.

Does anybody have this same problem or any idea what to look for?

A:Norton automatic live updates won't work

When LiveUpdate has crapped out for me, the only RX I've found is normally to completely uninstall Norton, scrub the disk for any Symantec or Norton folders, and then install again.

I have a very misterious problem. I move a Windows7 client between two different domains (forests). Each forest has it's own certification authority with their own root CA. Machine certifactes will be provided to 802.1x authentication against Radius. Because
the Client gets a new certificate during Migration, I select automatic selection of Client certificates. I expect, that the new certificate will be used for authentication and it seems to work. So far, so good.
After a while, my old certificate gets outdated. But I have my valid new certificate. What is the client doing now? The computer will try to use the old certificate often and the connection will be refused with error message. It looks like, that there is
a kind of random mode to select the certificate and also the old outdated one will be choosed time by time. This is not really expectable. Does anyone know more about, how the automated selection works and how this can be controlled?
Best regards

I'm a system admin full of users that don't bother to install the windows patches and updates. Well I've setup the desktops to automatically check, download, and install the updates.

Does this only check at the time specified?

Does it only download critical updates? windows updates? drivers?

Does it prompt the user when it's downloading and installing? Does it force them to restart their machines?

A:windows automatic updates isn't so automatic

If you're talking about Auto Updates in XP, then you can specify an exact time for the updater to check and download and install the updates. RIGHT click My Computer/Auto Update Tab. Otherwise, depending on the internet connection, update looks only once a day I believe. ONLY critical updates are brought down, you must visit the site for driver and other updates.
