I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all! I am pretty new to this kind of Win7 issues, so I hope some of you will be able to help. Story goes...

After few hours of gaming the computer died. (It happened right after switching keyboards.) Now, on every setup BIOS(?) comes up with list of options (F2 enter BIOS, F11 boot options, F6 Flash etc.). After that a black screen with error message comes up: Missing Operating System.

I tried rebooting from USB (since I have no disk-drive) and I keep on getting the answer: Error Loading Operating System.

Any ideas?

Thx

A:Missing Operating System/Error Loading Operating System

All unlikely, but possible - (a) your HDD died. (b) your bios became corrupted (c) your HDD boot sector became corrupted (d) your HDD partition is corrupted.

Does the drive spin up when you switch on (feel it)?
Check the bios to see if the HDD is reported correctly and is at the top of the boot order.
Find a bootable CD - an OS installer, or create Easeus partition manager bootable CD http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm and boot from it. What does the HDD look like with Easueus?

I have everything up on my desktop, but seemingly cannot open any programs that require to go online. When trying to open explorer, I get promted with
"Choose the program you want to use to open this file". "Do you want to run or save this file" then it asks Do you want to run this software. I select run, then it reverts back to "Choose the program you want to use to open this file"
also for example
If I open "Action Centre" and select "troubleshooting" I get
C:\windows\System32\rundll32.exe
Application not found
a lot of times I get
C:\windows\System32\msdt.exe
Application not found
This all started after I was advised my computer is infected with a virus.
I can't download any program that I want to use to fix the problem.
I am using my 2nd old slow laptop to access this forum.
Can any-one offer advise on what to do please

If you have access to another computer:

1. Download Malwarebytes:
Malwarebytes

2. Uninstall your current anti-virus software and replace with MS Security Essentials:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Put the installation file onto a USB stick, or CD. If you don't have any of those, you may put it on Windows SkyDrive (if you have a Windows Live Messenger).

I recently bought a new computer with windows 7 operating system and tried to run my dbase program.
To do that I first ran cmd.com to get a dos prompt.
It read the following way:
c:\windows.old\windows\system32>dbase.exe
I received following message:
'dbase.exe' is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I was able to run edbase.exe quite easily on windows xp and vista. Can any one help me solve this problem, so that I can run the program on windows 7. I understand it should be able to run 32 bit programs.
Best regards,
Gulab Gidwani

A:Operating system problem

"c:\windows.old\windows\system32>dbase.exe"

you should that program using DIR c:\windows.old\windows\system32\dbase.exe

The message is telling you that DBASE.EXE is not found in your PATH
echo %PATH%
You might try
c:\windows.old\windows\system32> ./dbase.exe

Why \Windows.old\windows\... looks like you are attempting to run an OLD program from another system without first installing it on this system

Hi, I'm in need of figuring out if my laptop was infected by a trojan, the operating system went kapoot and i need to reinstall it, or if its hardware failure. I used it last night and my AVG caught a "small trojan horse" called cryptbase.dll and after removing it i believe is where it began. My computer restarted and ended up starting up with the acer splash with me able to click f2 for setup. But f8 doesn't work and causes a long beeping noise if i leave it alone it goes to a black screen with a underscore blinking at the top left. i've done some research but, im unsure which route to take without taking some advice for my own laptop. My laptop is a Acer Aspire 5741-3541, Windows 7,intel core i5-450 processor, 4 GB DDR memory, 500 GB HDD. if you need more information please ask because im unsure with what is needed to fix the problem. The solutions i've heard is reinstalling windows 7, or it might be a HDD problem. Thank you.

Hi Dano50 !

Follow the HJT link in my sig and go through the whole 5 steps process. Post your final log in the HijackThis section where security techs will review it. One day few weeks back I turned on my home built comp. and It stated that there was a file missing. And this wasn't the first time I got this error. But I knew what to do, format and re-install windows. (kept a back up hard drive for all my files since this happens every 3- 4 months) But this time, when I try to install it, the setup procedure stated that there was a file that I couldn't install, actually there were several. It gave me an option to either retry or skip this file which could result in a malfunctioning os. I had no option but to skip it. And when it was done, it rebooted and a blue error screen message came up. I have re-formatted and re-installed at least 4 to 5 times, the hard drive is not the problem and neither is the disc. I have a dell laptop, and I used the os disc that came with it, the same error came up. I even changed the cd-drive from which it was reading the cd from, but no luck or results, techguy please help

Hello everyone. Ive been having a sustained and frustrating problem with my PC. To cut a long and very infuriating story short the drive letter was changed on my pc meaning that windows xp professional wouldnt load up. Ive tried a number of different fixes but in the end backed up my hard drive to a friends pc and then decided to start from scratch.

I ran the windows 98 boot disk to format the drive so that I could then reintall windows. When I used that floppy disk it made me partition the drive. After doing this I now only get a message saying 'Problem loading operating system'. This happens with the xp cd in as well. I have checked the boot priority in the bios and everything is fine there. At no point do I get the 'press enter to boot from CD' message either. I just want to reinstall xp and start again, Im not bothered about losing anything on there as Ive backed it all up. Any suggestions?

I have to point out I know nothing about computers and really need step by step help as I am a student and cannot afford to take my laptop to a shop.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5155. After having it for a short while my laptop slowed right down and had many problems involving the internet. A friend of mine suggested reformatting it. So he lent me a windows xp media disk, as I could not find the original one that came with the computer, and I reformatted my computer. Worked well and the computer seemed to be fine, however my friend did not give me a disk with drivers and system utilities on it, so I was unable to do anything with my computer.

I then found all the original disks, for my computer (which was made by fujitsu and all the disks are official). I decided to try and reformat it with the correct disk, operating systems, twinload cd/dvd. I inserted the disk pressed f12 and it all seemed ok until I got this message:

Twinload Windows XP professional:
-Your configuration is not supported
-none of the required operating systems were found on the hard drive of your system
-remove the dvd and click OK to shut dow the system.

I have no idea what this means. I looked at other threads on this ofrum and I can see that people have had a similar problem, except people were trying to downgrade from Vista to XP, wereas I am trying to load the correct version of XP onto my computer so I can put the drivers and utilities onto it.

Please help!!! If anyone has any idea... Read more

I own both Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. I had some issues in the past with memory and in troubleshooting sed problem I erased my Professional Edition in place of my Home Edition. Basically the games I was playing had worked in the past on the Home Edition so I thought I had operating system problems. Anyhow, I fixed the memory problem and all games ran fine again. Wanting the newer Professional Edition back on the computer instead of the older Home Edition I decided to do a clean install with my Pro Ed. However, when I loaded up the Pro Ed, I must have skipped a major step and now have both operating systems on the computer. My question is, is there a way to erase the original home operating system and keep the new Pro Ed operating system without doing a compete clean install?

A:[SOLVED] Multiple Operating System Problem

Hi mossanta, Welcome to TSF!

Depending on which one you want to boot first, will depend on how you rewrite the boot file.

Presuming that you wish to boot from Windows? XP [Greek] first, and Windows? XP [Russian] second, the boot ini file will read like this....

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Greek: [d:0,p:1] \windows" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\windows="Russian: [d:1,p:1] \windows" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Hopefully this will cure your problem.
Post back with the results.

EDIT Moved from Am I Infected to XP. As requested in post 22 ~~boopmeMy computer runs XP - Home.Last night I was prompted to update Media Player to version 8. I was afraid to do so, because many "updates" from MS mess up my computer. However, I loaded the update. I noticed the new icons in the tray and on the Start Menu, so I assumed all was well.On Friday nights I run my anti virus and anti spyware software. I started AVG anti-spyware. I always hit F1 and the machine always bootsup just fine.Something happened while AVG was running to shut down the computer, what I don't know and I don't know if it is connected to the Media Player update or to a virus I picked up the night before (4 of us use this computer, so viruses and adware are not uncommon - I automatically run Norton Anti-virus and manually run AVG, Ad-Aware, SuperSpyware and Lavasoft). HOWEVER, this time when I hit F1 the machine did not boot up but rather loaded my desktop but with NO tray, NO icons and no response from the Windows key on the keyboard, but with only the mouse pointer on the screen. A:Desktop problem (no operating system detected)

Sometimes...when the CMOS battery is weakening, it impacts the BIOS settings. They can be goofy, they can return to default settings. On some systems the default setting may be via network, which is what appears to be the case with your system (if I'm right about the CMOS battery).

You can try going into the BIOS and checking the boot options and ensuring that the boot drive is the first option. But, if they changed once without user manipulation...they may change again.

I would try a new CMOS battery.

If the current BIOS settings call for the system to boot from the hard drive...then we have a different situation.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this because it seems to be an issue in a few different parts of the computer but here's the problem.
When I start my son's IBM Laptop, the IBM Logo comes up and then some sort of clicking/whirring sound comes from where the Hard Disk Drive on the computer is. AFter this occurs for a few seconds it searches the computer for something and then the following message comes up:
PXE=E6I: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Operating Systems Not Found

After that nothing happens. I'm pretty much a novice with computers, so I'm really not sure about any kind of hardware-related issues, which is what it seems like this probably is. Any help or suggestions that anyone has, I would be grateful. I realize there is a good possibility I will have to take this to a pro to get it fixed, but its a Saturday, so if anyone has any suggestions that I may be able to try before Monday, please let me know.
THANKS!

A:Serious Problem Operating System Not Found on Computer

It sounds like you may need a new harddrive. To be sure, make sure all the harddrive cables are firmly connected, especially the power. If it's an ATA disk, try a different slot on the IDE cable and make sure the jumpers on the disk are set correctly.

Hi, As long as the existing installation of Windows 10 has activated Ok after the upgrade from a previous OS, you can just perform a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link.  Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows 10 will activate automatically once the installation has completed. http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/ Regards, DP-K

Hello, so today i made a big mistake with my laptop. I am taking a operating systems class and we are going to be taking a look at ubuntu next week. I decided to install unbuntu on my laptop on a seprate partition to check it out and be able to use a full version and not an emulated version. Well long story short I ended up unintentiolly formating my hard drive. When i boot now i get no bootable devices found. I have tried at alt-f10 command to restore my windows 8 but that doesnt seem to work. I would like to be able to reinstall windows 8 onto my computer.

You need to use the recovery media to restore the operating system. You have the option to get the recovery media from Acer store. It will install the Operating System, all the pre-installed Software and the drivers of your system.  If you have a unit from US or Canada, you may purchase the recovery disc from Acer store : Acer StoreIf you have a unit from US or Canada, you may also live chat with an Acer technician at : Acer live chatIf you have purchased the computer in any other country, you may contact Acer support here : Acer Global Support  Click the Kudos  to say ?Thanks? for helping! select "Accept Solution" if your issue is resovled.

A:how can i get past the can not read Operating System Not Found Problem

First enter BIOS setup to see if HD registers there. If not it may have failed. Test it to be sure by downloading, burning to CD with Windows Image Burner then running a full scan with the HD maker's HD Diagnostic DOS scan.

You can also try accessing it through the door on back to reinstall it to see if it is failing to make contact when plugged in.

Videos for doing this and replacing the HD if necessary are available by googling your model name/number and + replace HD.

If you replace the HD you can run Factory Recovery disks you made at setup or order from Sony support, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If HD is intact work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

I am having major problems in MYOB (bookkeeping software) and my small home/office network. Only two computers connected viaSMC Base Station - one on Win98, one on WinXP Professional. Is there any way to solve this or will I have to upgrade the Win98 machine? It's a nightmare...

This is the message that pops up and forces the program to close:

"MYOB Plus Application File has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous."

Hi,

I have a compact laptop bought second hand but has problems.

1) Firstly when it is switched on it asks to choose between either windows 98 or windows 2000 pro (the one i want to use)

2) On loading up windows 2000 it works fine however when i try to use many options such as; volume control, disk cleanup, msconfig, majority of .exe files etc it says "access to file denied" or "cannot find the file "xxx". make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available" - this is despite the file it is looking for being the one I want to use.

3) On searching futher I noticed that in my computer along with the usual WINDOWS directory. I have 2 other operating system folders in their entirity. WindowsNT and Windows 98 - I think that having all systems on my computer must be reason for it not working

4) I have tried to uninstall windows 98 using its own uninstall program however get the message "cannont find "xxx" etc

5) I have a feeling the windowsNT is just cd contents and ahs not been setup properly and could therefore simply deleted but I ahve not done so just in case

6) If i begin the laptop ion windows 98 much more works, including sound etc, however the uninstall still does not.

7) Misc problem - I cannot install any more programs when running windows 2000.

Any help would be much appreciated, first time on the forum.

Thanks a lot.

Unfortuneatly whoever owned the laptop before you really cluttered up the hard drive. It sounds like the system files have been mixed and matched in various places and in cases like this, there really isn't much you can do except reformat if you want to get everything working the way it should again.

Can someone please give me some advice in terms of correcting the following problem?

When I turn my computer on, it cycles through the booting process over and over again. I've tried all the different booting options available by pressing F8 and nothing. The computer gets to the windows 2000 screen and then restarts the booting process again. It actually shuts down and then restarts itself. Please help!

A:Problem Booting Windows 2000 Operating System

Hiya and welcome

Can you get to safeMode:

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key. The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu appears.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. In most cases, it is the first item in the list and is selected by default.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Ah, I see that you've already tried the options in F8. Have you tried the option Last Known Good Configuration?

1. Restart the computer.
2. Press F8 when you receive the following message:
Please select the operating system to start
3. In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
4. If you are running other operating systems on the computer, click Microsoft Windows 2000 from the list that is displayed, and then press ENTER.

WARNING: After you start your computer by using the last known good configuration, changes that you made since the last successful startup are lost.

If you can start your computer by using the last known good configuration, the last change that you made to the computer (for example, the installation of a driver) may be the cause of the incorrect startup behavior. It is recommended that you either remove or update the driver or program, and then test Windows for proper... Read more

Hi,

Finally got back to here, my 40GB drive failed and Maxtor was kind enough to RMA an 80GB back to me! It's very quiet and fast so I'm happy. Basically I have a backup drive set as the slave which has all my backed up files from before the crash. I'd naturally want to hook it up to my PC. I have it set as a slave, power, IDE cables all attached. My BIOS recognizes it, but then during boot I get error loading operating system. So I go and run XP Recovery console, and I see that it's examining the drives, but they're both on Disk 0. Not sure if they should be. The newer one is Id0, older backup is Id1. Not sure what has gone wrong.

Booting with just the 80GB works fine.

If you need my specs, they're in my profile.

A:Problem with secondary HDD, error loading operating system

I suggest you disconnect the slave, install your OS to the new drive, then re-attach the slave and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, then you need to check the jumper settings on each drive (maybe do this step first just in case). You are probably best to set both drives to 'cable select' (CS) setting and make sure that the boot drive is attached to the furthest away connector. Then there will never be any confusion between drives.:grinthumb

PS: I am assuming that you autodetected each drive in your bios!

So the other day I got a pain in the butt virus (GFW I think it was) http://www.sophos.com/en-us/threat-center/threat-analyses/viruses-and-spyware/W32~Rbot-GFW.aspx . Well I ran Malware-Bytes and got the infected files off. And I started up the computer again and it looked very weird. So I went looking to see if all my files were there and they were all hidden. Fixed that but it still looks weird. So I did a repair install of Windows and it still looks the same. My next step is a complete reinstall of Windows (waiting on an external I just ordered). I was wondering if I need to go that far or if there is a setting somewhere that is doing this.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

P.S. The clock/ T is rainmeter. They are supposed to be there.

Hello Everyone,
my Laptop is unable to startup normally, and when i tried to ''repair-computer'', my operating system isn't listed.

however i tried almost everything [ safe mode - last known successful start up or whatever its called - and low resolution] and nothing happens.

i have my system recovery disk [dont really know if this disk is my recovery disk but its called [alienware microsoft windows 7 home premium SP1 64 bit] they say [ this software included on this recovery DVD-ROM was preinstalled on your hard drive at the factory and may only be used for backup and recovery of your alienware computer system] well i think its the recovery disk then.

however i dont really know how to use it to recover my system, i can't do any thing unless my operating system is listed there so i can fix it...

can you please help me solve this problem...

kind regards,

Run Dell Hardware Diagnostics from F12 Menu. Sometimes the full diagnostics suite is listed as Utility partition. Try both listings if both are present.
