I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: SHOCKING Interview with NVIDIA Engineer about the GTX 970 fiasco

I wonder if this explains some of the problems over in the BSOD Forum??

Upcoming driver could improve GTX 970's memory performance

Nvidia really stepped in a pile of PR poo when it was discovered that there was an internal communication gaffe over the way the GeForce GTX 970 handles its 4GB of onboard memory and the resulting specs.

I have a Dell computer with USB hookups on the front. Each time I try to plug in the USB cable that goes to my digital camera it shocks the crap out of me. This usually happens when I have the camera plugged into the USB cable and then connect the cable to the computer. The bottom of the camera then just starts shocking me until I put it down then when I pick it back up it's fine. The other day, my friend hooked just the USB cable up to the computer without the camera and he said it shocked him too. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I've noticed recently that my secondary monitor (a 17" emachines crt that i found on trash day ) is occasionally making a shocking noise (kind of like what you'd hear playing with a van de graff generator) and flashing a black screen for a fraction of a second. It seems to be at random, and my primary (a 19" KDS crt) does not have this issue. Anyone know any reason for this (and it shouldn't create any significant danger for my video card, should it)?

A:Monitor shocking noise

If it sounds electrical, it probably is. Could be a cold solder joint, the flyback transformer or something arcing out.

If you're not handy with electronics, toss it or it could be a fire hazard.

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.

so there i was 2 days ago checking the windows update page for sp2. after a few errors with version 5 of the windows update page i got the thing to download.

during installation i got an error "windows could not find file atapi.sys" the error window gave me a selection of different file paths to use but none worked. i decided to keep installing and everything went fine till i had to reboot. when windows got to the loading screen it froze. i tried to repair xp with the disc and i got another error that made my computer continually reboot at the windows loading screen. even after finishing a full repair windows still restarts at the loading screen, and even when trying to boot into safe mode.

i can still get into the repair console but i dont know what to do once in there, if there is even anything i could do from there.

what i want to do is somehow get into windows and back up all my stuff so i can reinstall. or mabe just uninstall sp2.
if you need me to post further info please post what you need and i'll get it up asap.

my aunties comp got broken in a thunder storm and she gave it to me to see if i could get the stuff of her hard drive. i was wondering if it would break my computer if i put it in my comp, and do i have to do something cause its got windows installed on it?
i took the sound blaster out of it and it works in my comp so the hard drive could still be ok,

A:Shocking hard drive problem

It is likely fine, probably the only thing that is wrong with hers is the Power Supply. Now if it was a huge lightning strike that broke other things in the house there may be more wrong, but I doubt it.

So you may want to just pick up a new power supply and try that before you end up getting her a new comp.

To answer your question, yes you can hook the hard drive up to your computer without any problems, provided you have a place to hook it up. You won't be able to boot from that hard drive though, at least not without a lot of problems. The best way to do it is to set it up as a slave drive on the same channel (ide ribbon) as your existing hard drive, make sure your drive is set to Master when you do this and not cable select. If the drives are sata you won't have to worry about that.

I have been having no luck with regards to this laptop and its quite appalling battery life!  I have had the machine since November 2018 and according to my Windows 10 Battery Report my Estimated Avg battery life is 2h47min.  This is a FAR cry from the 7+ hours advertised.  This is running Chrome and Visual Studio Code.  I would like an actual answer from a Lenovo Representative regarding this as this is a far cry from what I was expecting!

A:Lenovo X1 Extreme - Shocking Battery Life

I am also running Chrome and VS Code on my P1, which has the same hardware as X1 Extreme, but on Linux. I can get 7-8 hour battery life when running Intel GPU. Battery life with NVIDIA GPU is much shorter. If you connect your laptop to external monitors, it has to run NVIDIA GPU, so that might be affecting battery life.

A:7500 LE shocking frames... wrong driver??

Sorry mate but it's propably your graphics card...My 7600GS is considered mid to low end nowdays, think about the 7500LE...LE editions are "cut down" versions of other cards. They usually lack clock speed and memory bandwidth, they can have pipelines disabled too.

As for the 512MB it usually is a marketing trick for low-end cards. RAM size isn't really important in low resolutions and settings (like texture size) and those cards are not capable of high resolutions. They don't have the computing power to proccess all the graphics data needed. Even if we add them 1GB of RAM they won't utilize it, leaving the extra RAM idle most of the time. Those 512MBs may not even be the card's native memory. If it uses TurboCache technology it just allocates system RAM until it fits 512MB when a game requires it. This is a major drawback of this technology as system RAM is usually much slower than graphics card RAM.

And if your Aspire is a laptop then we are talking about a mobile version which is even a little worse...

So when I play games, the sound sometimes "hangs" (short fragment gets repeated) This also happens with the screen, and at first I would claim it on software (game to heavy, drivers, ect) but I recently re?nstalled my computer (full clean). So my windows is bright clean. The games them self are pretty old and with the same settings I managed to play them on other installations in the past (same computer). Even while playing music and browsing the web, sometimes this issue strikes.

I have a few "errors" on my hard drive, though they don't increase anymore, and I believe the cause where bad handeling of my laptop in the past. My next guess would be sound/grafix unit/card ? But I have really no idea. Would someone have a idea where or what to look for ?

My computer is a laptop elitebook HP 8530p. (4GB ram, 32bit)

Any help is appreciated.

To change the MTU settings read below.

First start an administrator console by entering cmd into the searchbox on the start menu, right click the little icon and choose "run as administrator".

In the console enter the following commands to change the MTU:

Type into command window "netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces" without the quotes. Take note of the id number of the wireless interface.

Then to change to mtu 1460 use the following command.

"netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface id mtu=1460 store=persistent"

So here's the story.

My friend reformatted his computer. Dell Dimension 2400. He has Windows XP home with SP2. It was totally blank and he didn't know what to do with it, so I popped on to do what I could. Everything went smooth except 1 part.

His screen was only displaying in 640x480 and the slider was greyed out. I couldn't find the driver for his video card so I did the following:

Display Properties
List All Modes
Then found a 1280x1024 (256 colors) that I chose.

The size was OK but the colors were horrible (still no driver installed) So I kept searching and found his disc that had drivers on it. I extracted the video driver and restarted the computer. Now when I turn on the computer I have all the load screens show up, but Windows is just a blank screen.

Question 1. Most likely was it my display settings that did this or the driver I installed or both?

Question 2. How can I fix this without a screen? The computer isn't even displaying in safe mode.

In advance I'd like to say: Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Sorry if this has been asked before, searched the forum, but no sign of any problem like this.
I have (I think) FlyTV Prime 30 card, bought from a seller in China or Taiwan on ebay. All the writing is in an oriental script, so can't tell for sure what it is. The larger of the chips has " SAA7130HL, and I can just make out "KS604171" though the first few digits are not very clear. There is what looks like the Phillips TM on the chip.
The problem is that when I try to tune in the channels, all I get is "snow", there is no change to this as the program scans through. The antenna is an indoor passive type, but it works fine on my bedroom TV, so I dont think its that.
Im using the 3.20 drivers and TVR320 control software. I have applied the Direct X 9.0 fix, and also the UK frequecies update.
My PC is a homebuilt AMD Athlon XP2400, 512 RAM, Nvidia mx 4-440 graphics, Hercules muse 5.1DVD soundcard, IEE1324 firewire card on WinXP (fully updated). Norton AV runs in the background.
I have reached the end of the line...maybe I'm being thick, but I really would be grateful for any help to get this working.

Hello all,

Recently I tried to update the virus protection component of Norton Internet Security 2005. It said it was unable to do so, and then came up with a message to uninstall and reinstall the whole program. This I did, but it still would not perform the live update. There was nothing wrong with the Internet connection. I tried for hours to get it to work, but it would not. So, in frustartion, I uninstalled it and downloaded Avast Antivirus, together with the free version of the Zone Alarm firewall. (I'm a very poor boy at the moment, so can't afford to pay any more right now!)

Avast seems to work OK and I've tested Zone Alarm and it too seems quite robust. The problem I have now is that Norton Internet Security will not fully deinstall. I went to Add/Remove programs on the control panel and clicked remove. Seemed OK. Then I went to my registry cleaner to get rid of any traces. But now, when I boot up, I get two pop up windows that say, "A necessary file could not be loaded. NAV Prod" and "A necessary component for this function is missing or damaged. (C:Program files\Norton Internet Security\Norton Antivirus\ccAVMaildll.)"

Wonder if anyone can provide advice as to what is going on please? My combination of Avast Antivirus and Zone Alarm doesn't seem to be entirely compatible either, or so Avast tells me.

Any advice gratefully received.

In the attempt to open a zip file my computer when into a loop.  You have about 2 seconds to move the mouse and click a command.  This has happened before and I fixed the problem by turning off the computer and on again after a few minutes.  Well this time it did not work.  Windows starts to reboot and stops giving a blue screen.  I have repeated this process 4 times with the same result.  It has be on fro about one hour and I still have a blue screen.  Is this a result of the zip file opening attempt or is it a coinsidential failure of some other kind?  If you have a solution I certainly could use your help.  Thanks

A:Zip File Fiasco

Open the run dialog from start menu and type in cmd.
you should get a window like this.

Type in chkdsk c:/r then press Enter.
You should get  "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>". Type in Y and press Enter.
Restart your computer to start the scan. Do this scan first, then type in sfc /scannow in a command prompt.
When the scan is finished please post the log of this scan.
In the command prompt, type in:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
This will create the file "sfcdetails.txt" on your desktop.
Also, please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

 Checkmark the following checkboxes:
• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files
Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Hi guys,

I've been having problems trying to set up a Firewire 800 drive for use with my new iMac.

At first I bought a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio II, since I use two of them at work and they work perfectly fine. However, the one I got made some terrible noises, unlike the ones at work. I talked to WD and they said it shouldn't be doing that. So I exchanged it for the same model, but the same thing kept happening.

I figured maybe the whole batch was defective, so I decided to try a 2TB Seagate GoFlex for Mac. This one was a little different. Whereas the WDs would make these noises the first time they were plugged in, the Seagate was fine the first time. Only after shutting down the computer, then booting back up did it make the violent noises.

I've tried using different wall outlets and I've tried connecting via USB 2.0 instead of Firewire 800, but the same noises always occur. I would have just figured that the noises from the WD drives were natural, but since the ones I use at work don't make those sounds, I think something must have been wrong.

Does anyone have an idea about what might be going on here? In my opinion, these noises don't sound healthy and I'd of course hate to lose my data due to a hard drive failure that could have been prevented. Am I just being paranoid?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Just a little update on the latest round of arm wrestling from AMD and Nvidia.

AMD vendors answer-predictably- to the launch of the GTX 680 it seems is to wring every last MHz out of the HD 7970. PC Partner's AMD division, Sapphire, is about to unleash the HD 7970 Toxic.
1150MHz core, and 6GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 1500MHz (6000 effective)

2 x 8pin PCI-E and 8+3 phase voltage regulation should ensure that the card lacks for nothing for further overclocking.

PC Partner's Nvidia division, Zotac, seem equally ready to seperate the enthusiast from their disposable income with the GTX 680 Extreme Edition, promising a not-inconsiderable 1400MHz core clock (39% overclock over nominal 1006MHz "stock" frequency)

For most people, the GTX 670Ti's long awaited launch seems nearly upon us. If the rumoured HD 7950 performance for HD 7870 price eventuates, it could well trigger a price reduction cascade* through AMD's product stack as well as laying waste to GTX 580/570 pricing...although with those cards being EOL and rumours of Nvidia possibly withholding TXAA support (Borderlands 2 etc) for Fermi based cards, you wouldn't think that Nvidia's board partners would be greatly inconvenienced unless price reductions threaten GTX 560Ti margins.

* Assuming Nvidia/AIB's can get enough stock into the retail channel. Once vendors get the go ahead for creating their own GTX 680 flavours it would follow that availability should pick... Read more

I have been using Mozilla for some time as one of my browsers and have never had a problem until now. Upon the release of 1.4 I did an install with disastrous results.

After an (apparently) successful install, Mozilla would not launch but would crash. But the worst is that other browsers I use no longer connect even though they will launch OK. For example, I have Opera, Netscape, MyIE2, Copernicus, Stardock Central, iRider. They all fail to connect to any website. This had to be caused by the Mozilla install as it all happened simultaneously.

I did an Uninstall on Mozilla but that did not correct the problems with my other programs. I have not found anything on the Mozilla website that relates to this condition.

FYI, IE does work OK as does Avant which is a browser that uses the IE engine.

This is all happening under XP Home with all the latest updates.

I suspect that the Mozilla install inserted some code that is blocking my other programs from seeing the DNS or maybe the port itself.

Any ideas?

HI, As you have XP why not try to restore to before the latest installation as that would take care of the problem. Peace Mal

I wondered what happened to that battery recall solution that dell had.  I wondered if there was an admin in the CompuTrace system that forced the limit of the battery to 1 minute on purpose.  It goes for the same concept as LoJack.   There were rumors that LoJack for cars can limit the amount of gas it can use.  I just say this because Lithium Ion batteries do not really go bad that much.  (Did you know that the great CIA created that technology back in the 1960s)
I just think that the battery's serial number changes and it cannot be altered again through the remote CompuTrace service.  I used to have a CompuTrace admin account and I know a little bit of it but I am not employed at that corporation any more.  I know that a person can look up what software is being used on the computer and I know that it can be called it as stolen using the system, but I think someone can probably force a battery limit on it so to bypass that a person would just have to switch it out because the serial numbers do not match up to the original call in.What do you guys think?

I have a Dell Vostro 3550 laptop running Windows 10 Pro. Here's the issue. If I use the generic video driver, the laptop screen is fine, but can't clone it to my projector. If I update the video drivers (Intel HD 3000), my laptop screen disappears and is only on my projector HDMI. As a test, I plugged a monitor into the VGA port and voila, the video is there too...but not on my main screen. I tried clone, extend, only PC, only 2nd screen...no good.
Can someone please help???
Thank you!!

A:Dual Screen Fiasco

With the Intel driver installed, you should have an Intel display icon in your system tray, or Control Panel. double click this to get to the Intel Video Control Panel. Go to the area for Dual monitors or TV. Choose to Mirror the display. You will get the same display on both monitors. You can also choose to Extend the display, your main screen will have the start button and taskbar and the other screen will be an extension of the desktop.
Or you can right click the Desktop, choose Display Settings, scroll down to Multiple Displays go thru the various settings.

I have a very strange issue when trying to install Vista. The install actually goes along rather quickly without errors but before I get to the logon screen, things come to a CRAWL! Both the audio and video are extremely choppy. The circular Windows Vista logo slowly fades in at about 4 frames per second and the audio is ridiculously choppy, taking 20+ seconds to get past this logo and to the logon screen. Once logged in, everything is still slow, maximizing/minimizing windows takes forever, etc. I figured this was the video drivers, so installed the latest drivers for my 8600GT, no change. Updated the sound card drivers, no change. No conflicts in device manager to point me in the right direction. I've searched the web and I can only find a similar problem stemming from VIA RAID storage drivers - I installed the latest from VIA, no change again.

Does anyone out there have any ideas? I'll be very grateful for any assistance!

I think I need a SiS 7012 driver for my audio device

I have just reinstalled xp

I went to the sis site and downloaded a zip file. Extracted it to a new folder and clicked the setup icon, but it failed to complete.

I have had this before - but if it does complete I have trouble with device manager and locating the damn thing.

Is there something I am doing wrong

A:Downloading Driver Fiasco

You'll probably have something like "unknown media device" showing in the device manager.
Remove/uninstall it and when you reboot Windows will have "found new hardware"......

Try unpacking the files from the zip (^ in advance of the removing and rebooting part ^) and letting Window's hardware wizard look for the files (or browse to them yourself).

I have 2 hard drives on my computer (C & D). The other day when I booted up the computer a chdsk on D drive took place. It showed a bunch of orphan files and some other stuff. Now comes the problem, in which I think I know the answer but hope that there might be some saving grace out there. When I look at the properties for D drive, it is 0 on free space and used space. All my shortcut icons to things on D drive cant find their programs or folders. I have MacAfee Virusscan and use it frequently. My C drive is fine...so far. Is there any way to try and save my files? Unfortunetly, I dont have a way to back them up because I have no recordable drives. If there is any way possible to find these files and save them and then figure out a way to back up both drives I would be ecstatic. Please Help!!!

Now when I turn my laptop on, it seems to boot up correctly, but the screen is blank. I hit F8 to try and start up in Safe-Mode, but no dice.

So, I have windows 7 and until very recently, have had no (obvious) problems with it, but my grace period ended and the stupid startup repair loop sprang up. I'm more of a screw-around-until-i-break-or-fix-it rather than a just-pay-the-professional kind of girl, so i went online and looked for DIY solutions. And I broke it.

After umpteen billion very not helpful help pages, i came across one that featured direct input into the command prompt window which seemed like a good idea at the time, but now im stuck in the windows boot manager instead. It's a never ending loop of memory diagnostic scans. I have an installation repair disk (Windows 7 system recovery disk 64 bit) but i cant use it on my current screen, and i don't know how to get off my current screen to use the disk. Is there a way to get back to the startup repair loop? I kind of miss it now. Or, you know, fix the computer. That would also be good.

Here's what my boot manager looks like:

File: \windows\system32\winload.exe
Status: 0xc0000428
Info: Windows cannot identify the digital signature of this file.

I have no idea what this means. Help, pretty please?

So, I've had VHScrCap installed for a while, and until recently, it worked beautifully. However, it suddenly stopped working and every time I would go to broadcast my desktop, all I would get is a black screen. So, I decided to reinstall. I uninstalled the program through the Control Panel (Windows Vista), and re-downloaded the installation file for VHScrCap. However, when I try to install it, it tells me that the program is already installed.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I used the recovery partition on my Sony Vaio PCV-RS430G to completely reload my system today.

My backup is located on an external SATA plugged into one of my USB ports. Sony tells me I have 7 USB 2.0 ports.

I have updated Windows XP Home as far as it will go, but all my USB ports are still acting like 1.0.

My backup is 70+ GB and I can't wait a whole day for this thing to copy.

I downloaded the latest chipset driver from Sony, as that was the only driver that seemed like it might have something to do with USB.

Any ideas?

I have an ASUS A7N8xe-Deluze mobo with and Athlon 3200+ processor, which the pc read as running at 2.19ghz. So, I thought it might make it run faster if I downloaded and flashed the latest BIOS from ASUS's Web site. Well now the darn thing is saying I have only an Athlon 2500+ and is running at 1.83ghx!

I used the ASUS flash BIOS utility, so I didn't save my old BIOS. (I don't even know how to anyway). So now I'm trying to find a way to get it back to the way it was. The CD that came with the mobo is pretty much worthless; it has the awdflash.exe file, but nothing that looks to me like a BIOS.

Any ideas?
