Preferred Solution: File server security

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've got a bunch of files on a server where the files are ok but the user security on them has gone bang.

Is anybody aware of a tool available (apart from CHKDSK) to reset security (they're all data files if that helps)

I have installed FileZilla server 0.9.41 on Windows Server 2008 R2. When I upload files to the FTP site, the time
of the file uploaded is incorrect. For example if I upload a file modified 10:37:10 PM it becomes 5:37:00 PM on the FTP site. It is always 5 hours earlier, and truncates the seconds. This makes version control of files difficult. Is there some configuration
change that can fix this, or is this a Windows Server issue? The server time is configured for the Central time zone in The United States.

The following Structure is a representation;
SRV1 - IP - FQDN SRV1.DOM.LOCAL - File Share 'FLDR1' / USR1<ReadOnly>

SRV1 has a folder, FLDR1, being shared for read only access to user USR1.

PC1 and PC2 logged on as Domain User USR1.
PC1 is able to connect to SRV1 to see and look in FLDR1.
PC2 is unable to connect to SRV1 to see and look in FLDR1.
Now there are multiple means of connecting to SRV1 to see the share FLDR1.

The following connections were done in combination with the following methods;
Method 1 - via logged on Domain User CMD Prompt with 'NET VIEW'.
Method 2 - via logged on Domain Administrator CMD Prompt with 'NET VIEW'.
Method 3 - via logged on Domain User Explorer Window.

Okay I want to go over pros and cons of some of the things that my boss wants done.

First off let me explain what we have. Users are on a domain system. Both laptop and desktop users. No users have admin rights.

Now let me explain what we want to do. We want a backup of their My Documents (and possibly other directories in the future) but we want it to be as invisible to them as possible.

I looked into the Folder redirection GPO and has a good pro - Simple to impelment (I did a test on my own PC did it in about 5 minutes) cons - in order to allow laptops to work they would have to have offline folders enabled and synchrnized and worst of all synchrnization won't accept PST's, MDB's and other key files that we would need synchronized as well gives errors in the synching process.

I then thought about a file sync program letting them seemlessly work on their PCs and just sync the files to the file server - Pros Can install a server side client that just polls for connected PC's and copies the files to the repsective places. Cons costs money, usually does not sync in use files making some of the files be missed.

Lastly I considered a batch file to run at login - Pros easier to setup to copy things out. Cons only runs at login so people could leave their PC up for 15 days and have 15 day old software. As well I do not know how to copy only modified files so some people with large files would copy over a ton of data (unless I can find a solution for this).

Ok, so I recently re-installed windows (Windows 7 Home Prem. 64 bit, SP 1), had no issues with it before, Had this PC for year and a half, and today suddenly it gives me the above error when i try to download a file (Even windows updates) off of IE, It's also worth noting pictures do not show up either.
I have found a temporarly looparound by moving a Firefox copy onto this PC from my Labtop via flash drive, but its far from a fix. Still can't download anything, but I can see images and watch some youtube videos.

But theres another error as well when i try to download off of firefox:

I have tried changing my Internet Security settings, but they don't solve anything and they actually reset themselves back to the defualt (Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded) after about 5-10 minuites.

Pretty confident it's a windows issue and not a Networking issue as everyone else can connect fine, and iits also causing issues like "File is corrupt" whenever trying to open files, and is breaking both Firefox and IE, But if mods think this thread is more appropiate somewhere else, Be my guest to move it where it would get awnsered better.

Tried so far:
Reinstalling windows (Yes i moved my games/files to flash drive(s) and formatted my disk when installing)

Changing Internet Security Settings

Thanks in advance.

Hi, welcome to the forums you say changed internet security settings go to start, search and (copy paste) inetcpl.cpl ,,2 Open custom and make sure a check in "enable" is set for "Downloads". If you have already done this (it is this way by default) what Anti Virus do you use, and firewall.

It's been going on for hours and it's now on 270,00+. Should I continue this? I have no idea on what to do. Are my files will going to be corrupted? or my laptop will be long gone? I hope not. My final exams are still there and I have no backup. I want to reformat but still it can't.

I need help guys, please and thank you

A:Replacing invalid security id with default security id for file #####

I have not experienced this myself, but I have heard that it will tear up a Windows XP installation but for Windows 7 you should experience minor-to-no problems.

You still want to backup afterwards as a just-in-case. I'd be more worried about the laptop spontaneously crashing than chkdsk fixing the security ids.

Hi guys - here we go again.
I start by saying I've read the previous threads on this topic and haven't got anywhere.

I have 2 computers networked at home. Both 'puters run XP sp2. I want to share files between them. But I can't.

The server service won't start on either. Both say that the server files can't be found. All the dll files are present in system 32 . Start up set to automatic. Executable paths are correct (C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs), Log on as local system account, dependency is ok with computer browser there.
Have done a windows file check and no problems.

Please help ??? This is driving me nuts (well more nuts). I am a computer idiot but try hard so please have mercy.

In return happy to answer any dental questions you may have (as that's all i got to give)

I have a situation where I am constantly having to edit the super.ini file to replace text with some other text.

My problem is that I have servers that this ini.file points to and instead of editing the file every time is there a way I can select which server the ini. file points to by use of a batch file etc. I have 5 servers lit-sup, chi-sup, wor-sup, rus-sup, bog-sup. Basically, I would love a way either to enter the sup via the cmd prompt or a batch file for each sup. So for this example I would like a way to enter "chi-sup" and lit-sup would change to this, keeping in mind I also need to be able to do the same for each server.
Hope this makes sense!
I would be most grateful if someone could advise if I can do this?

The contents of super.ini is pasted below

I have 5 servers, lit-sup, chi-sup, wor-sup, rus-sup, bog-sup so with my limited knowledge to find and replace the text within the file does not work as the text is always changing to one of the other servers.

A:Change server stated in ini.file with bat.file

There could be a way to tackle it using regular expressions but they aren't a strong point of mine so I would go about it this way.

I would have 5 ini files, 1 for each server. I would then have a batch file as below which prompts you to chose which server you want the super.ini to point to, and then copy that into place with the name super.ini.

@echo off
rem ******************
rem Script to change super.ini
rem ******************

rem Ask which server to change to
echo ******************************************************
echo Please choose which system you would like to change to
echo ******************************************************
echo -- Press 1 for lit-sup
echo -- Press 2 for chi-sup
echo -- Press 3 for wor-sup
echo -- Press 4 for rus-sup
echo -- Press 5 for bog-sup

if /i "%Input%"=="2" (goto chi)
if /i "%Input%"=="1" (goto wor)
if /i "%Input%"=="2" (goto rus)
if /i "%Input%"=="1" (goto bog)

rem Copy server specific ini file and name as super.ini (suppress overwrite prompt)

copy lit.ini super.ini /Y

I have a problem to access file server on Windows Server 2000 from a Windows 7 PC. For your information, due to some reasons, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are in different domain.

I have tried all suggested solutions which are :
i. to unchecked both attributes in 'Network Security : Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC)' for both clients and server.
ii. to apply 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' in 'Network Security : LAN Manager authentication level'
iii. to make sure the time setting for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are the same.

But still, i couldn't access the file server. In fact, each time I entered domain\username to authenticate, it will give out this message :

Since I am kinda new to this troubleshooting things, it would be great if someone can tell me why does this happening. Is it because of the different domain?

thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 unable to Access file server on Windows Server 2000

To connect to the server you would need to enter the credentials of the domain user on the server that would have access. For example if the domain was 'home' with a user 'Josh' then I would put:

As the username. If you want to get advanced you could try and form a trust with the other domain in active directory so that the other domain has permission to access the server

Hello and this is my First Post

Can you help me with an annoying dialog that pops up when running shortcuts please?

I have (portable) applications located on E:

I can run those applications directly from E: without a problem - i.e. I don't get any warnings.

However if I create a shortcut to one of these applications and place the shortcut on the desktop ( on C: ), then running the shortcut causes an open file security warning (see attachment). The warning dialog claims it can't determine who created the file, because it comes from "a location outside your local network". Which is really strange because it is a locally installed hard drive.

The only explanation I have is I've used E: with a previous windows 7 installation on the same hardware, then I reformatted & reinstalled my Windows 7 partition, but kept E: untouched.

Couple of things I've tried are:
1) there is no "Unblock" button on the shortcut's properties dialog
2) Group policy editor changed to not preserve zone information
3) I couldn't find an exact match for this particular open file security warning when searching here and other forums

Looking for a consensus regarding security software for a Windows domain that includes Exchange 2003. One consultant prefers Symantec products. Another Trend Micro.

I know there are complaints about the tardiness of Symantec's virus updates and I know their spam filter is not particularly good. I have not seen much bad about Trend. And I know there are other good suites out there.

I want something that cleans email on its way through Exchange and something that pushes protection (AV, Spam, Spyware) out to the client computers.

A:Server Security

I wouldn't put either on a server that has a defined role on a network like and Exchange Server. If I had a choice I would have appliances for AV and SPAM before they ever hit any of the servers or clients. Symantec Corporate AV has the ability to push updates to the client and I am sure many others do as well. Installing them on servers just adds overhead to the processes they are already running.

Hey all!

I don't know if this is the right place to ask (since it seems it's all about spyware and stuff here), but if it's not please move it to a different forum...

I'm building this website in ASP, and as i've been taught, I use relative paths to images and such. I also want to use the "<--#include virtual="filepath" -->" thing in my pages, so it's easier to correct structural changes that I maybe have to make in the near future (there are over 100 pages on this site - since I cannot use a database - and so it's easier to correct 1 file than 100 files).

But the people that will host the site have all relative paths disabled. Now is my question: Is it necessary to disable relative paths if you have NTFS security? You set your security on NTFS level, so if hackers would use the relative path thing to go through all the files on the server, they should not get access to any of the files, right? Or is the NTFS security not enough?

Thanks for reading and maybe answering...

The easiest thing you can do if this is a *nix based server is change it to SFTP. This will cause your family to have to change their connection settings, but this will prevent sending of unencrypted passwords. This will also encrypt your payloads, but will cause more overhead on your server. You can also edit your firewall rules to only allow specific IPs or IP ranges to connect.

Hi all.
Just got myself a copy of server 2003 standard that I want to use for a file server for the home to store films, music, pictures etc. We have four machines in total all running XP SP3 (one is MCE) with limited accounts, no network or file sharing set up and an xbox 360. They all have access to the internet through a D-link 524 and have norton 2008 or AVG free running.

I have a daughter who is 8 and has access to the net along with her friends who use it too. I have done what I can to filter her access but it's always a concern that she'll stumble across some malware that gets past the Norton. My wife & I are (I'd like to think) more net savvy and never open attachments, never ok downloads and only let flash run on trusted sites etc. etc.

Quandary: How on earth can I safe guard the server if my daughters machine gets malware? Is it enough to just not to include her machine on the network. Should I exclude my daughters machine by connecting another router to the main Dlink and have my home net behind that, but then again my daughters machine wouldn't have access to the files on the server (would it?) so defeats the object of a server for her. I'm not sure of the balance of risk here. I back up important stuff monthly to an external drive.

It would be great to have all machines on the LAN but I do not know the balance here between potential risk and convenience as I am new to this. I am going to research it all, but for mo I'm new to... Read more

Can anyone help me?

We have an NT server, and currently having Major problems with people who don't know what they are doing deleting folders!!!

Is there any way of allowing users (W98) to access and save documents to the folders without them being about to delete them?

A:NT Server Security Issue

If the file system is NTFS, then you can set permissions to write and modify but not delete if you want. If the users are connecting through a share, you should set share permissions that way also. I would set both if able. Don't worry about w98 machines seeing a NTFS share, it uses the server to translate and looks like a FAT folder to the network users. To set share permissions, right-click on the folder and select sharing and then the permissions button set only admins and system as having full control, and everyone (or domain users) to read write and change. That is for win2k, options for NT may read modify instead of change. For folder permissions, right-click on the folder and select properties and the security tab, click permissions and set accordingly. Hope this helps.

I have a network comprised of: 2 client computers, both running Windows XP Pro, connected to a 5 port switch via ethernet, 1 router/firewall/gateway running Linux Smoothwall connected to 5 port switch and to cable modem.

I have another system that isn't being used (it is rather limited on hardware, it's got a 7 gig drive, pentim 2 cpu,...thing is with the case there is no room for a cd drive, which makes OS installation a pain)

What I want to do is put two hard drives into it, and use it as file storage for the two clients....is there anyway to do this without installing an actual os and wasting all that hard drive space on a box that I don't even intend to have a monitor on?

Could I possibly format it NTFS and then use Microsoft Management Console to create a new partition then mount the empty NTFS folder?

Thank you

I was tasked to create an answer file for an unattended install using SIM. In a virtual lab, i had the install.wim file on a server and put it on a share to push it through to the client machine. Just for the purpose of making it easy, we could apply full
control permissions in ntfs to the file to everyone and gave read write permissions to everyone in the share. By giving the path in SIM i could pull the file from the client station, but then was asked for credentials. Any idea why it is asking for credentials?
I thought that i made it available to everyone. I even made a separate folder and copied the file to the folder then changed the permissions. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

The three tools previously available for download on this page -- SQL Server 2000 SQL Scan, SQL Check, and SQL Critical Update -- have been consolidated into a single download, the SQL Critical Update Kit. The SQL Critical Update Kit also includes an SMS deployment tool and the Servpriv.exe utility.

NOTE: In some circumstances you may experience difficulties extracting the files from the SQL Critical Update Kit package if your computer has more than 4 GB free on your hard drive. See Microsoft Knowledge Based Article - 301913.

The details of the tools included in the SQL Critical Update Kit are as follows:

SQL Critical Update:
SQL Critical Update scans the computer on which it is running for instances of SQL Server 2000 and MSDE 2000 that are vulnerable to the Slammer worm, and updates the affected files. SQL Critical Update runs on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. SQL Critical Update is supported in a clustered environment.

Instances of SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and security patch MS02-039, MS02-043, MS02-056, or MS02-061, or instances with SP3 or later, are not vulnerable. Computers running SQL Server 7.0 and earlier are not vulnerable.

* SQL Critical Update must be run on the local machine.
* SQL Critical Update will fix vulnerabilities that it discovers; it cannot be used to simply disable an instance of SQL Server.
* SQL Critical Update does not install SP3. It only updates vulnerable files.

Hi Good Peoples,

(Hope this is in the right forum category.)

On my desktop computer, I am running Windows Vista Home Premium edition and Microsoft Outlook 2007.

I have just signed up for a package that gives me access to Microsoft Exchange 2003 server. I have set up and run the configurations on my PC, but when I open the Outlook program on my computer, I get the following error message.

"There is a problem with the proxy server security certificate. The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the target site mapi.pm.telstra.com
Outlook is unable to connect to the proxy server. (Error code 10)"

I have also set up this exact same program on my laptop. It is running Windows XP Pro. When I connected on a laptop, it worked perfectly.

Has this got something to do with Vista? And is anyone have any idea how I can fix the damn thing?

A:Proxy server security certificate

Make sure the name of your SSL certificate matches the name of the proxy server (mapi.pm.telstra.com).

I have just started to get this message when accessing my emails through MS Outlook 2007.
The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified.
When you accept the offer to continue using this server, everything works until the next time you use Office.
Any clues anyone?
I've gone surfing on the net without finding a solution I'm afraid.
I use Windows 7 Ultimate
MS Office 2007
and the offending account is a Hotmail account.
I do have several email addresses redirected to Outlook - they all work fine.
Any help would be appreciated!

A:The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot ...

The Hotmail security certificate has expired and thus the verification warning. The MS Outlook 2007 is configured to access the mail server using the encryption protocol connection.

7 user LAN
Windows XP Home Edition
1 computer acts as a server for common files (using dBase and OpenOffice)

I want to add more computers but restrict their access to specific directories on the server and no access to other shared resources.

I am looking for a program that will do that. I looked at UNG, but was unable to see 'users' on the network and thus restrict their access. Other than that, it looked like a good program - did I miss something??

Unable/unwilling to upgrade operating system.

My thanks in advance for you thoughts and guidance.

A:Network security - need to lock server

You can add access to the Security Tab in XP Home: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm and then set folder permissions.

I have tried this and it works. Make sure you are familiar with "Allow" and "Deny" settings or you can lock yourself out.

I want to reproduce an issue in IE8 in Windows Server 2008 R2 but the security settings of IE8 in the server is restrciting me to do so. The same issue is working fine in IE8 in Windows7

Is there a way out where I can change my IE security settings in Server 2008 R2 to behave same as IE8 in Windows7 so that I can reproduce my issue in Server 2008 R2 machine?

A:Security Settings in IE for Server 2008 R2

Open Server Manager and click the link on the right-hand side to modify the IE Enhanced Security Configuration. Set both Admins and Users to "off", and restart IE. It will no longer have the ESC extra security restrictions and behave about the same as the desktop browser version.

I run a Windows 2003 server at home which hosts my website and email.

I have a number of security precautions in place and wondered if there was any more I could do.

Im using a Dreytek router too.

I have noticed recently that the server has been playing up and acting strange. I was just wondering if it could be a security breech or something.

Any ideas from the world?

Thank you

When I'm using Google chrome, I cannot go to site with "http://". And following someone else's advice, I checked the public keys for Google and Facebook in the certificate information and they both shared the same public key beginning with 30 81 89.
It started when I plugged in my external hard drive.
Also, I do not know if it is connected but windows firewall gives the error "Windows Firewall cannot change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424" when I try to start it while windows defender gives the error "the specified device does not exist as an installed service. (Error Code: 0x80070424)"

I also attempted to install Microsoft security essentials but it gave me the error message "error: 0x800b0001"

I attempted to do a system restore but that failed too.

Right now I have no idea what to do other than just format the whole thing. An y advice on what I should do?

Help, Our web site has been hacked twice. We use IIS with the current service pack. I have tried running a security program and the ports remain open. I have stopped services for FTP and SMTP and still the ports show up as open. Any ideas?

A:{Advice Offered} - IIS Server and Security

1. Do you have a proxy server, ie. proxy server 2.0 by MS.
2. If yes, to # 1, make sure its configured properly, and that with the two nic config. check the nic which is connected to the Internet and see if IP forwarding is selected. YOu don't want if forwarding packets to your LAN.
3.You could also try a free download such as zone alarm. (a software firewall)
4. Now test your vulnerability by going to the below posted link ("Shield's up"), which after choose the appropriate button will either scan your ports, or test your shields.
* Note you can try this before installing zone alarm, then after to see the difference.

** zone alarm can be downloaded from: http://www.zonelabs.com/download.htm

***Shield's up site: http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2=4q2hzkpe

I hope this helps

Well I got two questions really, is there a way I can do things like block people who login from using run, task manager, Off button. I know I can change all this sort of stuff by editing reg values on each of the computers but is there a way to do it from the server. If it is possible to apply these rules to certain user groups it would also be really useful.

How do I turn off the password rules? you know the way windows will only accept the password if it has a caps letter and numbers and so forth, I find these rules fairly annoying and I do not need this much security.

Thanks in advance
