Need a robust text find and replace utility - Like Ecobyte Replace Text 2.2 but not

Q: Need a robust text find and replace utility - Like Ecobyte Replace Text 2.2 but not

We have a TON of text based INI files for our companies software deployment scripts.

We also have a TON of people who use different ways to deploy the same software. On one server alone we can have a bunch of different ways people install E.G.

msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symant~1.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\server\share\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\server\share\SAV\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>

and so on down the line.

I LIKE the abilities of Ecobyte Replace Text 2.2 but the problem is I have to type in the whole line as it is in the file to then replace it with the new one for the new deployment.

What I want to do is have a search based on PART of the line so I can then put in Symant~1.msi and Symantec Client Security.msi and replace the ENTIRE line with a new line.

Is there any multi file utility that allows you to search for part of a text line but replace the entire text line?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi!
I need to use the search and replace function. here's what i wanna do
Note: I have not used any regular expressions here...

i wanna find this:
\resource\activeprofile.py"-"!:\private\a000bd8c\

and replace it by
\resource\activeprofile.py"-"!:\resource\

now...the name "activeprofile.py" has to be the variable as its not the same for every entry

so its something like this
Find this:
\resource\*"-"!:\private\a000bd8c\

and replace it with:
\resource\*"-"!:\resource\

where * is whatever the filename is...and it should not get replaced

also if its possible can i search for
\^\*"-"!:\private\a000bd8c\

and replace it with
\^\*"-"!:\^\

where ^ is what was in the place of ^ when text was found
and * is what was in the place of *

plz help me and reply quickly...this is a pkg script for a SIS file (for symbian installation)

Thank you very much in advance

Hi. I am trying to format a script in Microsoft Word for Mac and I'd like to be able to find every bit of text in parentheses and replace it with the same text in italics (including the parentheses themselves). I've tried to figure it out using wildcards and such, but I keep getting error messages that I'm not doing something right.

I'd appreciate any code I could use to do that.

Hello,

I have multiple text files (very large) containing text split by the delimiter $. Unforunately some of the data contains the dollar sign which is preventing me uploading the file into my data analysis tool. I can identify the difference between a delimiter and a standard dollar sign as the delimiter is always preceded by -} ie -}$. I cannot set this as the delimiter as it affects the way the data is read in my tool.

I need to alter the delimiter from $ to $$.

Can you help me find a way to automatically (using a .bat file) open the text files in the directory and replace ever instance of -}$ with -}$$?

Many thanks for your help

A:Batch Find and Replace on a text file

Welcome to TSG!

Do the files contain any of these characters:
"<>&^%|
If so, it would be much easier to use something like Replace Text, which can so a Search and Replace on multiple files. I haven't used it much so I can't be 100% certain it doesn't have issues with some characters though.
SwissFileKnife can do it from a command line. It does not make a copy, so backup the files first just in case.
This will replace -}$ with -}$$ in all .txt files in the C:\Test1 folder and it's subfolders as well. If you don't want to process subfolders add -nosub

Code:
sfk rep -text /[COLOR=Red]-}$[/COLOR]/[COLOR=Magenta]-}$$[/COLOR]/ -dir [COLOR=DarkRed]C:\Test1[/COLOR] -file [COLOR=Blue].txt[/COLOR] -yes
If your files don't have any of those characters, this batch file should work:

Code:
SetLocal EnableExtensions
Set _Source=C:\test1
Set _Dest=C:\Test2
If NOT Exist "%_Dest%" MD "%_Dest%"
PushD %_Source%
For /F "Tokens=1 Delims=" %%A In ('Dir /A-D /B *.txt') Do (
If Exist "%_Dest%\%%A" Del "%_Dest%\%%A"
For /F "Usebackq Tokens=1 Delims=" %%I In ("%%A") Do Call :_Sub "%%I" "%%A"
)
PopD
Goto:EOF
:_Sub
Set _tmp=%~1
>>"%_Dest%\%~2" Echo.%_tmp:-}$=-}$$%
Goto :EOF

Text files were created within excel by concatenating cells in each row. Each row became a text file. The contents of the text file are the contents of an html file. After the text file is created I change the file extension of the text file to html.

I need a mass replace text editor so I can replace the word (paramark) in the txt file (to be renamed as an html file) with a real paragraph mark that shows as a paragraph mark in Front Page.

The problem with doing what I am doing is when all the cells are concatenated in Excel, all the html contents end up on one line rather than having paragraphs separate the html lines.

Example: The Way The HTML Code Should Be
Code:
<html>
<head>
<title>Memory Master Bible Memory Program - NIV - 1 Peter 4:9</title>
<meta name="Microsoft Border" content="tlb, default">
</head>

Example: The Way The HTML Code Turns Out After Using Excel To Create The File

Code:
<html><head><title>Memory Master Bible Memory Program - NIV - 1 Peter 4:9</title><meta name="Microsoft Border" content="tlb, default"></head>
I can place text to be replaced (paramark) next to each paragraph mark so if I can find a text editor to mass replace a real paragraph mark in place of the word (paramark) my problem is solved.

I have four thousand files to process so I need to do a mass replace across files.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

I have a question. I've already looked online but I can't find a way to do this. Basically, what I want to do is take a select part of a document and change it (like the Replace feature of Notepad), but instead of replacing it with specific text, I want to change it to numbers, in consecutive order. Here's what I mean (let's pretend that I want to replace L):

Original Text
Sample TEXT L
Sample TEXT L
Sample TEXT L
...
Sample TEXT L
Replaced Text
Sample TEXT 1
Sample TEXT 2
Sample TEXT 3

Sample TEXT 100

And help with this question would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm using Windows, by the way.

Is this a Word document you're trying to do this in? You may have better luck using Excel. Both programs have the find /replace feature but Excel will allow you to easily number the text by putting Sample TEXT 1 in Excel cell A,1 then move your cursor to the bottom right of that cell until it becomes a bold + sign. Then just hold your left mouse button and drag down as far as you want to go.

The results will look like this.

Sample TEXT 2
Sample TEXT 3
Sample TEXT 4
Sample TEXT 5

Sample TEXT 7
Sample TEXT 8
Sample TEXT 9

Would anyone know of a downloadable freeware, search & replace text editor that has the flexibility to allow line oriented deletions or insertions based on a key-word? More clearly, I wish, for example, to be able to find every occurrence of a specified word in the text and delete whatever follows it in that line of text; or insert a specified string after (or before) the word.

It would be nice if the editor could remove blank lines or groups of blank lines.

The freeware editors I have found do not seem to have such flexibility. They work on multiple files; I don't need that. One file at a time would be fine for me.

Suggestions?

Greetings! I've searched everywhere for the answer to this issue. It must be common, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm using MS Word 2007, but the problem was the same in 2003. I sometimes get a text box that is behind regular text. I need to move it. One normally just selects a text box and drags, or cut and paste, it where one wants. However, when it is behind text, it can't be selected. I have found no way to select normal text and "send it behind."

How do I get to this text box that is behind my regular text? I've been told to "move the regular text out of the way, then you will be able to get to your text box." But the text box moves with text!

Thanks,

7nyerik

Hi all,

The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4334. A few weeks ago, it got dropped right on its corner with the power plug still in it; the little metal plug of the AC adapter is now slightly crooked, and the power jack has a little chip off the plastic part of it.

Anyway, after this mishap, it worked fine for another 3, 4 weeks, and then suddenly this week, it's refusing to power up. Its battery has been shot for a while (can't hold a charge), and I've been using it with the battery out. Why the sudden refusal to boot?

I took the whole thing apart---minus the little chip, the power jack looks totally fine and cosmetically sound. Put the whole thing back together, taking care to check that plugs were snug---still no power.

Stuck in the crappy battery; booted just fine (and then shut itself down after like 2 minutes).

How likely is it that it's the power jack which is broken? And why did it take this long to crap out, if it IS broken?

A new one of those silly jacks costs over $20 on eBay, so I want to make sure that it's the jack before I just up and buy one. Of course, if it's the AC adapter that's broken, that would cost even more! Bah.

Input?

A:Replace the power jack or replace the adapter?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

Hi all,
I recall being able to add the "find and replace" option to OE a while back. I think it was linked somehow to Microsoft Word or Notepad which has this option. I would like to remove (<<) from forwarded emails directly in OE rather than having to cut and paste to notepad and remove the (<<). I know my old imac's OE had an option to "clean up text" or simular which removed all the quotes. I don't see this in todays OE for XP though.

I do recall there being a tweak that added this function though.
Thanks in advance,

I am working on a system and have run into a problem outside my normal area. I have a system that reads text files and makes a report. This runs on a server that is old. We are working to move the system to a server running a current version of server software. Everything seems to work with one major problem. The host system, a mainframe, sends the data as a print file. The existing system captures the print stream and puts it into a text file. The text files are automatically named with a sequence number. There are multiple files created with one piece of data to be processed in each file.

The new server is not creating the files from the printer stream. The software is identical but the change to the new server has broken something. I have set up a text file to capture the data but it rejects the connection according to the mainframe log.

What I am looking for is how to set the printer up on Windows server 2008 64 bit version. I have Blue Zone and can consider other software. The older version of this used Reflections as a printer emulator.

In column A Have this adtr<JCNECHMCBDISA and I want to look just for the MC and “MC = MNDJ” if it found the MC in column replace with MNDJ (if it’s possible in the same row next column). Its not always MC or that size (it’s a mass scale search and replace). I have tried an if but didn’t work and then I try recording a macro but I need help because it replace 2 times because sometimes the replacements have the exact word that I’m also looking for.
Example

Selection.Replace What:="TIPOLEIJ", Replacement:="POL-222869;LIN33359;MC5875;DS23659", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
Selection.Replace What:="MC", Replacement:="MNDJ", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False

When it search for the word “TIPOLEIJ” it replace with “POL-222869;LIN33359;MC5875;DS23659" but when it search for MC it change the “TIPOLEIJ” replacement to “POL-222869;LIN33359;MNDJ875;DS23659” Im wondering if there is something that after it replace the value “lock” the cell so its not replace again.
Hope someone can help.Thanks

Hey need help!!

I have a ton of formulas that I need to replace the row reference! for example:

J21+J50+J87+J90+J106,J21+J50+J87+J90+J106,J21+J50+J87+J90+J106 (30 needs to be 50,50 to 86, so on)

But different replacement numbers

Just cloned an ailing drive for a customer. The new drive works fine - no problem.

Just one small issue: My customer had originally bought his PC second-hand and he'd like to remove all traces of the previous owner's name from the new hard drive.

My question: Is there a registry app that makes a simple job of finding and replacing all registry instances of say, George, with Harold?

Obviously, I can do this manually, and have done in the past. But it was a tedious job. If such an app exists as I've described above, I'd like to know about it :--))

Thanks in anticipation....

PS - It would be helpful if you're able to suggest something that you KNOW works, rather than an app that you haven't personally tried. I say this because there are several progs such as 'New Owner' which purport to change the owner's name, but in actuality only change a few instances of the entry instead of ALL.

I recently did a change of the Computer Name (Control Panel - System - Computer Name - Change) shortly after setting up a new XP Pro machine, and am concerned over the fact that I still see many instances of the old name in the Registry.

I am now seeing where that may actually be posing a problem, too: Norton Anti-Virus is supposed to use the item in XP's Scheduled Tasks to scan drive C: once a week, but I noticed that since that name change it stopped working. When I look in the properties of the Scheduled Task, it has in the field for "Run as" the string [oldcomputername]\Administrator". When I try to change it to the new computer name, it lets me edit it but as soon as I hit OK or Apply it goes right back to the old entry! I've even tried deleting the Task and creating a brand new one using Norton's interface, yet it still comes up with the old computer name there!

I'm not really sure where that's being kept, but I assume it's in the Registry.

For this reason and as a general maintenance step, I want to go through the Registry and do a global Find-and-Replace to change all instances of the old computer name to the new one.

Is that even advisable in the first place and, if so, what utility would I want to use?

Thanks!

A:Find-and-Replace in XP Registry

I don't know of any Windows Supplied utilities. FWIW, I've never bothered to search out the old names when I change a computer name. I have seen that you need to fix the scheduled tasks, but I don't know of any other issues that arise...

Here's what I am trying to do. I have tried some wildcards but i really have no idea how to make this work.

DD_ZS_001 - http://websitesname.com/download1
DD_ZS_002 - http://http://websitesname.com/download2
DD_ZS_003 - http://http://websitesname.com/download3
and so on (there are many links)

I want to take out DD_ZS_001 - in front of every link to have just download link link this:
http://websitesname.com/download1

Note that strings before the link are all different so I cannot use same find and replace in word or notepad.

I don't have access to bsd or linux box. Windows only.

Any help is appreciated.

A:Find and replace in word - need help

When you open your Find and Replace click on More button ,select use Wildcards , Enter DD_ZS_???- and it will remove all instances. The number of question marks depends on the size of the number 3 numbers 3 ???

Is there a program available that will allow a person to find and replace entries in the registry.

Yes, I am aware of the issues regarding making changes in the registry. However, my external hard drive failed and I need to change all entries related to the external hard drive in order to reinstall many of the programs that were on it.

Microsoft will not install anything because G:/ drive is invalid. Adobe will not install for the same reason. Many of my other programs look for the G: drive and stop installing when it is not found.

Thank you. If this is the wrong forum, please move.

You can use the built in registry editer. Start -> run -> regedit. Before making any changes be sure to back up your registry.

Hi all... I am working with a MS Word 2000 document that has a huge batch of numbers involved. The problem is that some of the numbers have run together... e.g.:

439 441 442 443 444445 449 450 452 454 458 459 460 461 462 463 464 468 470 472 473 474 477 479480

I can identify these errors just fine by searching for ^#^#^#^#^#... five digits in a row. Is there any way of doing a replace, using the same digits but with a space entered in after the first three? Right now I'm changing it by hand and have already spent nearly three hours engaged in this tedium. Any advice would be wonderful! Thanks.... Jim

A:Find & Replace question...

Are your 3 (or erroneous 6)digit numbers in seperate cells?
If so, you could do something like this:

I entered a list of 3 digit numbers and a few 6 digit numbers in cells A1 to A10. In B1, I entered:
=IF(A1>99999, LEFT(A1,3)&" "&RIGHT(A1,3),A1)
and then copied the formula down to B10.

In other words, if the value in the cell is a 6 digit number, show the 3 characters on the left, followed by a space, followed by the 3 characters on the right.

Alternatively, you could put the LEFT and RIGHT formula in adjacent cells, so that you only have 3 digit numbers in each resulting cell:

In B1, enter:
=LEFT(A1,3)

And in C1, enter:
=IF(A1>99999,RIGHT(A1,3),"")

You can then copy the resulting data and Paste Special > Values into another worksheet or workbook.

Hello there,
I work with Excel 2007 and have a problem:
I have a spreadsheet with data scattered all over. I need the email adresses that are on this spreadsheet in a list. When I do the Find and Replace and search for the @ sign, it shows me all the search results in a new window. How do I copy that list and paste it in, say, another spreadsheet ? We are talking about 1944 email adresses! I am already done with my nerves at this point and I need help badly! Thank you in advance!

A:Excel find and replace

Hi Susevienna. Welcome to the forum.

I think your best bet here would be to use Advanced filter.

Sort & Filter > Advanced

For your list range: Select your data
Criteria Range: Create heading(s), which matches that where your email addresses sit under. Multiple headings if required. Under which, put in "*@*" without the quotes.

You can select 'copy to new location' and select the new location to which you'd like your list to go.

Hope this makes sense.

Hi there,

I'm trying to wriet a macro that includes a find replace, but i need to increment part of what is being searched for.
ie:
Sheet called DAY2 references DAY1
Sheet called DAY3 references DAY2

I want to have a find replace that will do something like below:

-------------------------------
Sub FindReplace()

x = Sheets.Count
Sheets(x).Select
Cells.Replace What:="DAY(x-1)!", Replacement:="DAY(x)!", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=True
End Sub
-------------------------------

Not sure of the right syntax to use,
Many thanks,

I'm definitely not an Excel expert, but I can tell you that if the answer is out there, then it can be found at www.MrExcel.com. The most complete Excel site I've seen. He's gotten a little commercial, but wade through that and you will find a great Excel reference.

Hello guys, I'm new here and I want to ask you if you could help me. I have a text where there is some times a number apears n the form [*], where the asterisk is some number. I would like to replace all these forms by <a href="../Text/0001.xhtml#R*">[*]</a> (the number appears twice),for all the possibilities where a number apear in that form. I did it in Word, but it was not possible to replace, the Word just pasted [*], with the asterisk in the place of the number (the program was able to find the form, but not replace it). I could do it manually but I would spend a lot of time.Thanx anyone!
