Windows 8 Portable Workspace, where is it?!

Q: Windows 8 Portable Workspace, where is it?!

Ok, I'm up the wall on this, I'm trying to get a copy of Windows to install on a flash drive and boot from BIOS, but there's almost now way of doing so.

I remembered that Windows 8 7850 build had or has a feature called Portable Workspace where Windows will install onto a flash drive so you can take it to any puter you please. That's great and all, but where in the blue hell is it?! :stomp: It's like it's not there. Do I need something special to do something to it or what?
Thanks! :bounce:

Preferred Solution: Windows 8 Portable Workspace, where is it?!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What exactly did you try? Did you go to the Support pages for the Sprout and make sure your device is up to date? If you provide your exact model, I can provide a link to the pages. I had a Sprout as a loaner for a year, and found the website provided solutions better than the HP Support Assistant... (As a top contributor to the HP Consumer Support Forums, HP provides me access to the HP Sprout at no charge so I may better respond to the questions raised on the Forum.) WyreNut

I have removed almost everything from the C drive which says it has only 2% available, and have either deleted it or moved it to the E drive which still has about 50% available. Why does my C drive say it is so full when there is almost nothing on it? How do i remove more stuff off the C drive so I can burn my home movies and safely get them off my computer and onto a DVD?

After the last Windows 10 update all Sprout Apps and Workspace are gone. How do I restore the Sprout software without doing a complete system restore so I don't lose all my current installed software.  thank you

A:Workspace gone after last Windows 10 update

Hi @hgroth,Welcome back to the HP Support Forums! I gather that after a recent update your desktop is not the same and you want to get it back. I am happy to help with this. From your post, I see that you are confusing a System Restore with a System Recovery. For your purposes a System Restore is your best bet. See the following Microsoft information showing the different Recovery option and their uses. Recovery options in Windows 10 - windows.microsoft.com So give a System Restore a go, and let me know if it works. That same linked page has the instructions on how to do it further down. Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

I just purchased a brand new hp sprout and set it up. I try to launch the sprout hub, but it keeps quitting and says that an app needs to be launched. Then a windows dialog asks if I want to try to search for the app on the app store. I am unable to find Sprout Workspace on my computer or on Windows store. Cannot find any resource to download it from HP. Have no clue where to go from here!

A:No sprout workspace app in Windows 10

@hathubha? If your Sprout is brand new and you went through OOBE ( first use) there should be an icon on dekstop called "Sprout Workspace" that you should run. Try that and see how it goes. If you are still having issues you may want to contact the HP Support so they can assist you. FYI -  Sprout Hub is a Social Media sharing portal for easly sharing your creations with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc...

Just recently acquired a used Sprout and promptly upgraded it to Windows 10. What a debacle that was as the Sprout and all its projector, object capture, and document capture were all out of whack and didn't work properly. So, I "rolled back" to windows 8.1, and I was still having issues with the projector and capturing mode from the mat. I went on the "software and drivers" page for 8.1 and downloaded all the updates and patches. When I tried to load the latest Workspace software and the installation kept failing, even if I went a couple of versions back. Therefore, I restored my Sprout to its brand new, out of the box condition and downloaded and installed all windows updates and now, everything works great. My question is: "Which Sprout Workspace is the most stable and the best working for Windows 8.1?" I'm currently using 1.0.6.5022 which is a few versions back. Mind you I haven't downloaded any of the patches, chipsets, audio, BIOS, firmware, updated the graphics card......nothing. After the aforementioned above attempts and all the time invested, I'm hesitant to do so as everything is working fine. If I upgrade to a newer Workspace, do I have to download all the patches and upgrade the firmware, bios, graphics card, etc.? Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions. Rick

A:"Which Sprout Workspace is the most stable for Windows 8.1?"

Hello Rick, Unfortunately version 1.0.6.5022 is the last Win 8.1 supported version. The most current version 1.5.3.2935 requires at minimum Windows 10 TH1 ( Initial release ) or TH2 ( Last Fall release ) but is not yet fully functional on Windows 10 RS1 ( Anniversary Edition ) The next version that supportes Windows 10 RS1 should be avail shortly so please check back often. RegardsOlenn_D

Hello, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 Tablet (model 4296) which was originally on Windows 7 64-bit, but was now updated to Windows 10 Anniversary.  I would like to know how to set up the pen to work with Windows Ink Workspace.  This is the Lenovo pen that is part of the X220T.  I had read the exellent description of different types of Lenovo pens in this forum, but I think the X220T pen is older than any of the pens described.  Could someone help explain if this pen (and the X220T tablet mode) is fully functional in Windows 10 with Ink?  or is this model too old and should be obsolete?!  Thank you very much.

I have the Thinkpad X220t and it runs Windows 10 with the update very well. Ink is working with the pen. However mine is the 4298 model.  Be sure you have updated drivers from Lenovo.

Hello!

I'm trying to create a Windows To Go workspace however its not completing.  Some details on my setup:
Host PC:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64
USB Key: Kingston DataTraveler Workspace 64GB (it is on the W2G compatibility list)
I've tried creating the W2G workspace on two different systems, one of which is on our corporate image and the other was a manual install via the 8.1 ISO.  I've tried creating a workspace with both a captured MDT image (using Windows 8.1 x86 image)
or the install.wim from the ISO (Win 8.1 x64), both of them fail at the same stage.  I click through the Wizard, click Create then watch it die .. it gets to "Applying Windows Image" then throws up this: "Sorry, we couldn't create your
Windows To Go workspace.  This could have been caused by removal od the device or by a problem with the Windows installation files"
Watching the creation process with Disk Management open, I can see that it detects the USB key as an HDD, not a Removable Device.  I've used the W2G key to move files around so I know that it works as a basic memory key
I'm stuck!

A:Unable to create a Windows To Go Workspace

In the end it came down to the platform.  When I was trying to build a Win2Go stick with Win8.1 it wouldn't accept it no matter what I attempted, however I had absolutely no issues building one under Windows 10.  It outlived its usefulness sadly,
I don't think we are going to utilize it internally, but I was happy to see it work under Windows 10!

Not if you have Notes with content filled in.
Hover on the Notes Taskbar for the thumbnail and close Notes with that.
You can always invoke Stiky Notes from Start/AllApps without the 'Workspace'

You can also clear up a messy desktop quickly. Press and hold (or right-click) on the desktop, select View, and then clear Show desktop icons. To see them again, re-select Show desktop icons.

So, I've tried this 3 times now and it fails every time. I have my Sprout running Windows 10 10240 with all the HP Software updates, and everything works fine. Then Windows Update wants to install a Windows 10 update to 10586. I made a full backup of the drive before even attempting this. Then I let Windows Update do its thing. Once it's updated and reboots, the Sprout by HP screen stays up for several minutes after I log into Windows. Then I get the Windows desktop. No Sprout Workspace. No projected display on the mat. No lights on the mat. Nothing. Try manually starting Workspace and nothing happens. Checked Support Assistant and there are no updates I haven't installed. Restore the drive from the full backup I did to 10240 and everything works again. Have tried twice more since then to do the 10586 update and both times the same thing - it kills Workspace and the touch mat display. Nothing I do will get them to work again. I've rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled the apps, used the Recovery Manager to reinstall hardware drivers. Nothing works! This is a major issue, since Microsoft obviously wants everyone to update to the latest version of Windows 10 and the only way to block it is to set Windows 10 to a Metered Connection under Networking. But then I'm not getting any of the Windows Updates. I can't go without updates indefinitely. Help!!!

Hi everyone. I'm sorry to have to be here again.  I was just using my Sprout workspace a couple of months ago. But today when i went to use it and it didn't work, I went to the HP website as I usually do and ownloaded the most recent updates, drivers, audio package yadda yadda yadda -  (all the new sotware and drivers sine January 2017) for my sprout  - the original version - not the "pro," i still could not get the workspace to open.  I kept getting the message to restart the program. I restarted it - no go.  Then i restarted the machine a couple of times.  Nope!  I ran the diagnostic program.  All systems go but no workspace.  (sigh).  I also got a message that it wouldn't open because "Sproutservice."  I found 'sprout service" that i apparently downloaded  in January but when i clicked on it to 'run/open' it, it said that i couldn't use it because HP.PC.Log>dll was missing rom my computer. It said i should download it again and try again.  But where do i download that from. I don't see it on the HP website.

I'm frustrated.  Wasted 3 hours now on this when I could have been productive.
Something tells me this is an easy fix; but, my brain won't solve the puzzle.

Can somebody help?
Thanks.

For anyone with Windows 8, that is thinking of running Symantec Workspace Virtualization, here is my recent experience attempting to do that.

I've used S.W.V. (Symantec Workspace Virtualization) on and off for years. When Windows 8 came out I got a new computer, and decided not to install it. Recently I've decided I want to starting using it again. It's a very cool program.
I started by installing version 7.5.522, but quickly noticed 2 issues: inexistent excludes resulted in error1089 (which prevented removal of any existing layers), and excludes that use a letter drive were ignored (making it very difficult to get data out of a layer because it was all getting redirected). The reason for the inexistent excludes issue is that apparently Symantec has changed how excludes are handled, letter drives need an associated GUID now. This issue is resolved in future releases by simply preventing the user from adding inexistent excludes (which kinda sucks since there was a reason everyone did that), and in this release can be resolved by removing exclude entries for inexistent letters. The other issue about letter drive excludes being ignored seems to be due to the fact that this version is pre-Windows 8.
To resolve my issues I tried version 7.5.538 HF1, but that didn't work because again it's for Windows 7.
Next I tried 7.5 SP1 which does support Windows 8, but it BSODs my machine, and Googling around it seems that some others have this problem too. The exact error is "DRIVER... Read more

I've searched the net, but I found no other English article about that issue so far. Thought, I let this community partizipate into my findings.

What's the beef?

Although Windows 8 Pro doesn't supports Windows To Go, some users in German MS Answers Forum reported issues with "Windows To Go workspace".

Some receives the notification, that Windows store can't install Apps in a Windows To Go environment. And I had a case, where a user reported, that Windows 8 freezes and reboots, after he removed a no name USB thumb drive from system. During reboot he got a message, that Windows To Go media may be removed after shutdown.
Needless to say: All thouse users are running Windows 8 Pro - and the error messages doen't make sense.

After a long investigation we found the reason (with some help from MS support) and we examinded a cure. I've documented it in a short article linked below.

Maybe it saves (some gray hairs and) a lot of time struggeling with this bug / feature

Some software publishers or authors offer both portable and installable versions of their products. (Kee Pass is one of them.)

Is it advisable to systematically prefer the portable version, when running it from a fixed drive and not a thumb drive, according to the logic that if it's possible not to write into the registry, it's better not to ?

I often try new software, and I'm concerned about long-term stability. I install and uninstall a lot, using Revo Uninstaller Pro. But I've come accross people advising not to use Revo or other fancy uninstallers, just to stick to the product's own uninstaller or the Windows function.

Also, I have set C-Cleaner to a daily auto-run. In the past, I used its registry cleaner quite regularly. But some people say it's better not to clean the registry at all.

So I figured the more applications could stay away from the registry, the better. Is this a correct assumption ? Are there any drawbacks to portable apps ?

A:Are portable apps preferable, even for non-portable use ?

HI
I have been using a lot of cleaning softwares too . Registry as well as junk cleaners.
Registry cleaner to me is a good thing as it removes the useless leftovers of programs that are left by their regular un-installer or some deleted files.

ANS1 > I recommended to clean registry as it improves performance and reduce junk in resgitry . So if portables apps dnt have or create these junks in registry then ur assumption is right and i m at your side too because " u dont need to re-install every software when u replace OS as it will work as it is if its PORTABLE "

ANS2 > Portable softwares are better then installed ones .

Above are the answer given as a user , i have used many portable softwares never had any issue just benefits

I sure hope this isn't something simple that i'm foolishly overlooking but I need help (again) please. I was showing the new Sprout to my grandkids this morning and they obviously loved it. I think we were taking 3-D Scans when suddenly the computer shut down like it lost power. I assumed one of the kids bumped a cord or something but I didn't find anything like that. Everything looked fine and I started the computer again. Everything works fine except Sprout Workspace. It won't open. I double-click on its desktop icon and get the small blue turning circle for about half a second then the circle disappears and it doesn't open. I've tried two other ways to get it to open as well to no avail. I try to open the Hub and it says it is going to turn on the Sprout Workspace but it sits there endlessly trying as well. The workspace just won't open. I went to the support assistant and downloaded the two updates that were available. Still no good. Very frustrated here and hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.  Thanks!!

A:Sprout Workspace Not Working

Hi Lee 1956,I figured it out.....I went on the recovery manager, the message for me to create the system recovery had been sitting in my support assistant for awhile but I was waiting for a good time to do it.  So click on "create system recovery"  you then click on 'launch recovery media creation utility".  Your computer will ask if it has permission to do this, click yes.  When you are in the recovery manager you have 3 headings of stuff you can do, (help, precaution, and maintence).  Under help there is 'reinstall drivers and/or applications' click on this option.  It will bring up a big list of things you can re-install.  Scroll down to the bottom of the list and you will see "Sprout Complete".  Click on this and re-install.  It will work on it for a while, the Sprout icon on the desktop will disappear and then come back, at the end it will say re-install complete and ask you to restart the computer. Do this and you will get your Sprout workspace back.Hope it works for you! Gail

my computer accused me of removing a file that i was unfamiliar with, and refused to start. i pushed the thinkvantage button, bringing me to rescue and recovery 3. when i try to log on it tells me i "do not have a password configured." nothing on the screen seems to lead to configuring this password. i'm not sure how to do it since i can't really access anything on the computer until i enter this password. i'm not very good with computers, obviously, so if anyone could put how to do this in layman's terms, i would much appreciate it.

Is there anyway to run programs such as Illustrator or Photoshop on the mat so that I can use my finger or a stylus to design? If not, is it possible in the future that the sprout will support this?

A:Running Adobe programs on Workspace

I've been working with a  Sprout a little bit, and I haven't seen any way to work on the touch mat with anything other than the Sprout workspace.  I certainly wouldn't have any idea if there were plans to incorporate that feature in the future. Thanks,

I've just started to use PSE 6 on a PC.

However, I find it impossible to work with the charcoal background and black workspace.

With the Mac version under preferences, one can get rid of the charcoal workspace. How does one do this with the PC version?

Thanks.

Just needed help in determining whether VBScript can fulfill the functions of what AutoHotkey (http://www.autohotkey.com/) or Workspace Macro (http://www.tethyssolutions.com/macro-automation.htm) can perform?

The reason I ask is because I've got a massive print job that I'd like to automate as much as possible; unfortunately, I'm working with a third-party program, and my current knowledge of VBS leads me to believe that VBScript is incapable of interfacing with a third-party application, especially one that was never designed for mainstream audiences.

What I'm looking to do is something like this:

1) Pull a number of ID #s from an Excel file (Automated with VBA, of course - I've already done this, so don't worry about this part)

2) Put all ID #s into a form that requires a confirmation per ID # (Basically, you put in ID # 12345, press the "Tab" key, then you click "Add ID", repeat for however ID #s there are, then once you're finished, hit the "Create" button)

I've been able to play around with VBA/VBS enough to know that this type of automation can be done, but primarily only in Windows components, such as Excel or Windows Administration (Active Directory, Task Scheduler, etc).

I'm pretty sure that AutoHotkey will be more than sufficient for my needs, but I was just wanting to check to see if VBScript had any spot at the table on this (especially since it would give me another chance at playing... Read more

A:VBScript vs AutoHotkey vs Workspace Macro

Nevermind; I've got it figured out.

I haven't bothered trying to mimic mouse movement, but it's unnecessary, as the third-party application has excellent support for hotkeys (ALT / CTRL based hotkey combos), so I've just been using the SendKeys method.

Here are some links that I found invaluable:

A note on AutoHotkey:
It's an open-source program, so a preface as such would lead one to believe that it's going to be a program that's free of any malicious code; I haven't taken a look myself at it, but I would still believe it to be so, despite the many AV programs that flag it as malicious. Again, I haven't looked at the code (it would take me forever to figure out what I'm looking at), so I can't really speak to it's safety, but my research demonstrated that AV programs are just flagging a false-positive. Despite this, I didn't install it, as my OCD (or paranoia?) prevented me from doing so, but don't let my experience prevent you from doing what you feel is best (especially when you're in a productivity-intensive environment and don't understand VBS; kind of like me).

I didn't bother doing anything with Workspace Macro, since it's a trial-to-pay software. If you're t... Read more

Hi All,

I need your help and ideas in finding out a solution to a problem that I am currently facing. I work for an organization that has almost 5000+ employees. Each employee works from the office workspace allotted to him/her. Daily, almost 50-60 employees change their workspace locations because of various reasons. We are building a portal/application that will record any person's current location and show that location over a map, whereby it will be easy to locate that person.

The challenge we are facing is: How to track the movements? If a person occupying a location X, moves to location Y, there is no way we can trace this movement, unless the person updates this information in the application (that we are building).

We wanted a more automated mechanism, something that will use the LAN port. For e.g., if the person plugs in his/her laptop at location Y, "something" will tell the user that this LAN port does not belong to him/her as there is already another LAN port assigned to him/her (the one at location X). We have been trying to think of what that something can be, but have not reached any answers.

If any of you has any suggestions/ideas, please let me know.

Thanks a ton!
Satish

Hi Guys,
I miss the lower right side buttom on Win7 that took you right to the workspace window.
On Win8.1, when we look for the Workspace, the Charms Bar covers it most of the time.
Are there any such similar replacement buttons for Win8.1?
Any help is welcome.
Regards,
Flores

A:I miss the button (Win7) that took you to the workspace

Right-click on Taskbar and select Properties. There is a checkbox on the Taskbar tab to enable that feature.
