Q: ThinkPad Yoga 14 - The Fan keeps on turning on eve...

Hello,I'm having trouble since I recieved my LENOVO ThinkPad Yoga 14 two months ago.It is on guarantee.I've noticed that the master fan keeps starting even if the computer is not working at full capacity. Sometimes, it starts right after windows as finished booting! And it's a brand new computer, Intel i7 CPU and 8GO of RAM!The fan keeps working then even if I'm only surfing on the internet or working on word. It's REALLY annoying. I feel like this is already an old computer by it's blowing. My old computer, a 5 years old Toshiba Satellite, doesn't blow so much.I've searched over the web and found that LENOVO had released a new UEFI Bios that was suposed to fix this problem. I've installed it and nothing changed! The fan kept on turning on for nothing else than a gmail home page.I've already asked about another problem on the ThinkPad Yoga 14. It's about a background noise on the built in speakers. Here's the link: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Background-noise-on-ThinkPad-Yoga-14-bu...I'm not having a good experience with this Yoga 14. I was looking for professional quality and it is not.Can someone tell me if they have the same problems? What LENOVO is going to do about it?Thanks.Ludovic.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi ludovicfd Can you please post the full model number of you machine and which Windows version are you using?. For example my TP Yoga 14 is "20DM008UUS" and I didn't experienced those issues. I'm guessing that your machine fan is blowing too much and making huge noise. In my case I can feel more the hard drive noise than the fan, it is not like the HDD is "that loud", but when you are on a quiet enviroment you can feel it "scrattching". Do you want to try first updating any firmware / BIOS on your machine at the latest level ? After that another alternative will be to try to update the driver for the chipset and power. The basic thing for me is to try to update the drivers and firmware this way:- Windows Update- Lenovo System Update- Lenovo Companionand after that search manually for updates on the Lenovo Support site with your specific model number. Sorry, it is trial and error to see if a driver can fix your issue. If after updating the drivers, you think it is hardware issue you should try to contact Lenovo's Customer Support site Regards

I have a ThinkPad Yoga (Type 20CD) that recently began experiencing a major issue. I was using as usual when it gave me the windows 10 blue screen and told me it was restarting. Upon restarting, it was only able to launch to the boot manager, and when I tried to start normally, it noted that my Hard Drive was not found. I figured it was a seating issue, as I've had those before with the cables for the trackpad, so I opened the bottom and reseated the drive. After doing so, the computer will not power back on. When I press the power button, the ThinkPad logo light comes on for around 3-4 seconds, but then dies. No other sound is made, the fans do not come on, and nothing is displayed on screen. I have tried several suggested fixes (holding the power button for 30 seconds while disconnected from AC power, pressing the emergency reset button, etc) but to no avail. Since this is my primary computer for work and school, I am really looking to get this fixed asap, so any solutions I can do myself would be appreciated.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

I am hhaving difficulty finding an acceptable scaling mix between resolution, system scaling, and edge scaling. At 1080p, 125%, 125%, os navigation is mostly fine, but edge text is way too large. At 1080p, 125%, 100%, edge text is way too small. At all combinations text is inflated (but crisp) in certain elements while fuzzy in others. What scaling combinations work best for you? I am considering returning this to Best Buy and upgrading to a Pro 4 / Book, or even a Mac. The scaling is ruining an otherwise great experience.

So three weeks ago, I was working on my Yoga 3 14" and popped to get a drink, I came back and the screen was blank, I assumed it had gone to sleep, so hit a key to wake it up. Nothing! The laptop was plugged in, so I know it hadn't run out of charge. After sheer panic, I contacted Lenovo, who told me that my warranty was out by a month, and that I could send it to them to diagnose, and they would tell me how much to fix, then it was up to me if they did or not.One I wouldn't be happy about not having my laptop for a couple of weeks minimum, but also it had all my private information on.I turned to good old google, and stumbled across this forum, and somebody with the same problem.Their solution was to unscrew the back case of the laptop (as mentioned above, my warranty was already out), remove the battery cable, hold down the power button for 30 seconds and reconnect the battery cable.I did this, and low and behold it worked. Fantastic!Only for it to happen twice more that week, and approx twice a week since. Then yesterday my brother contacts me saying his laptop has died, just won't turn on. His is the Yoga 2 Pro, I told him to bring it to mine, and I would try what I had to do to mine, to his, low and behold, the same solution worked. Seeing as I wasn't the first person to have this issue, and I'm guessing others have used the solution but not commented, this is obviously a fault with the Yoga range. I'm hoping that Lenovo can address this issue, as I fe... Disclosure:  I received these laptops from Lenovo as part of their advocacy program, so huge thanks to the folks over at Lenovo. I don't receive compensation for my review, and as always, all opinions are my own.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is first modern ThinkPad that I've ever owned.  I?ve been using Lenovo?s Ideapad lineup for a very long time, and while I?ve used ThinkPads in the past, the X1 Yoga will be my first personal ThinkPad that I own.  So how does it stack up to the Yoga 910?  Let?s find out! I have the i7 UHD model of the Yoga 910 and the i5 FHD model of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga.  I tried out the latest Yoga 920, but I haven?t tried the latest X1 Yoga yet? hopefully, I will!

Hardware & Design
Even though both laptops carry ?yoga? in their name, the hardware behind them is vastly different.  The ThinkPad X1 Yoga has the classic ThinkPad black design, which is made of a carbon-fiber hybrid for the top cover and a magnesium-PPS hybrid for the bottom cover.  The Yoga 910 has a similar design from the Lenovo?s Yoga lineup, with an aluminum build throughout.

The ThinkPad only comes in two colors: classic black and silver; whereas the Yoga has a whole suite of colors to choose from, such as silver, copper, bronze, and even a few exclusive designs, such as the Vibe designs for the Yoga 920 and the Star Wars themed designs for the Yoga 910.

I have two staff members with different Yoga models, but with the same pen issue. Say, for instance, OneNote is open. The pen doesn't draw or write, but it can select and still be recognized. When I try using an old stylus from an HP Elitebook, it works TOTALLY fine - even the button on the pen functions properly. This suddenly started after months of the Lenovo pens working fine. I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but it can't be as the HP pen works.... I'm thinking it's the pen itself just getting worn down? It looks okay though but may be just a little loose... Any help / direction would be greatly appreciated!

I have recently bought a Thinkpad Yoga 460 with Thinkpad Pen Pro. But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

Hi everyone! I have had my ThinkPad W530 for a couple of years now and have been experiencing this problem basically from when I first got this laptop. When I try to power up the laptop, it does not turn on - sometimes it reaches the ThinkPad boot screen and I am able to enter the BIOS, but when I try to diagnose hardware issues, the computer turns back off. Sometimes I am able to boot into Windows or Ubuntu, but the computer turns off immediately after the boot (without bluescreening), or if i just let the computer sit for a couple of seconds. There are also other times where when I press the power button, the power button LED turns on for a second and you can hear the hard drive start spinning and then it just stops almost immediately and the power button turns back off, with nothing being displayed on the screen. I am pretty sure this is not a harddrive problem because I have tried replacing the original harddrive with a harddrive that works. When I did this, at first, I was able to boot into Ubuntu (as I have that OS on the other hard drive), but after a couple of minutes, the computer turned back off. In addition to this, I have tried booting into an external bootable USB, but just as I was trying to boot into the device, the computer would turn back off. I have tried doing these with the battery in and without the battery. I have also tried doing the "hard reset" by disconnecting the battery and AC adapter from the computer, holding the power button for ~... Read more

A:ThinkPad W530 not turning on at all

Since you mentioned that you had the motherboard replaced, I am not sure whether my solution can be applied to your problem, but the things you described appear to be similar to what I experienced with my w530 (2436CTO, i73840QM): the power goes out irregularly and sometimes it doesn't turn on at all. I had the issue for about a week. The machine was running great till the nightmare. At first, I thought it was dead. When I pressed the pwr button, the button light was on for a second. I also noticed the think light flashed. After hours of trying the tricks that you also discribed in your post, I was able to get it up and running by luck. I thouht the problem was solved until it suddenly shut down. And more unexpected poweroffs. I was blaming battery first, then RAMs, then power jack, finally I was able to narrow it down to the motherboard. Here is a quick way to diagnose whether your problem has the same cause: firmly press the power slot ( left highlight in the illustration of the maintenance manual  page 100 ) and push the power button, if you can boot it up without issues, then it might be the same problem, which is likely that some connection in the motherboard near the power slot is wearing out. Simple solution: fold a piece of paper into a short thick stick, slide in the gap between the magnesium structure frame and the right brass arm of the thermo fan (at where they cross), so that the board is effectively pushed down to enforce the power connection... Hi everybody, I'm using a ThinkPad T460p in my office and I just noticed that when the laptop is turned off (with power in) the USB and Ethernet ports are not completely shut down. How to turn all ports off when the computer is turned off? Many thanks!

A:turning off USB when the ThinkPad is turned off

Hello and welcome to the CommunityRegarding LAN port:most likely Wake-on-LAN feature is enabled in the BIOS Setup. Disable it (Config->Network menu)USB:do you mean the only port on the left side of the laptop, the nearest to the AC power connector? If "yes", it's a port with "Always on USB" capabilities, enables to charge some mobile digital devices and smartphones even if the laptop is powered off. Disable this feature in Lenovo Settings app.

I did the bios upgrade to version 2.23, now I cannot sleep, hibernate or shutdown my laptop. All these actions just result in it rebooting. I tried to rollback, disabled the rollback protection and flashed the old bios firmware but it doesn't seem to be sticking. Just curious, why is the new Thinkpad X1 Yoga I7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, FHD about $1,000 more than the similarly equipped commercial Lenovo 910?

Is it the ThinkPad brand name? The eraser nubbin? The 2 combined?

Just curious.

I've got a friend who needs a new laptop. She likes the touch/fold aspect of my 1st gen Thinkpad X1 Yoga. Do you all think she would be happy with the commercial Yoga 910?

Any real reason to get the new plain FHD ThinkPad X1 Yoga instead of the similarly equipped commercial Yoga available at Best Buy besides spending an extra $1000 for the ThinkPad brand name?

I've owned 6 various ThinkPads since 2011 FWIW. I get it, they're cream of the crop. But I kinda got sticker shock when I just priced out a plain FHD (and we need nothing more) X1 Yoga. About  $2,800, wow!

Opinions and advice -- no spam please (thank you!) -- welcome.

Best to everyone...

A:Why is the ThinkPad X1 Yoga $1,000 more than a similar Yoga 910?

@Jelks, The biggest difference I see between the X1 Yoga (2nd) and the Yoga 910 is active pen support which seems to be missing from the 910. You could use a capacitive stylus, but expect fingertip resolution, not pinpoint, and no pressure-sensitivity. Fewer USB ports: no HDMI or MicroSD; no Thunderbolt. No TPM module, if you need to store encrypted creditials, e.g., for BitLocker. Not sure about battery life; they claim up to 9 hours of local video for the 910 vs. up to 15 of MobileMark for the X1. Not an apple-to-apple comparison. You're not going to get the (soon to be patched, at least for now) security hole that is Intel's vPro management tech. You may not get Windows 10 Pro, possibly just Home (but you could always give Microsoft the money to upgrade if you need BitLocker or Remote Access). You're not going to get all the "mil-spec" design and testing etc, but if it's a personal machine, you're probably going to avoid abusing it. As you suggest, the "wave" keyboard -- including the trackpoint "eraser nubbin" -- is definitely going to be more expensive on the ThinkPad than the plain Yoga keyboard. I used two generations of ThinkPads (T61p and W520), but about 3 years ago I switched to a Dell XPS 13. A year or so ago, I ordered a X1 Yoga 1st gen for my wife and she likes it very much, so I am pretty familiar with the design and capabilities. TLDR: I think most people would be happy with the 910 vs. X1 unless they want the active pen. Als... Hello, I've had this laptop for a bit less than a year, so I believe the warranty is valid, but I'd like to know if there's anything I can do myself. I was using it plugged in although it had a full battery. I have an Anker power bank that was nearly out of battery, on which I was charging my phone. I thought it supported pass through charging but apparently it didn't, so my mistake. Upon connecting the bank (and the phone) to my laptop, the laptop immediately shut off and I could tell the lights in the room flashed very quickly. Since then (at writing this less than one day ago), the laptop will not power on. When connected to the wall the small charging light turns on and is white. The power button lights up for a couple of seconds before turning off again when pressed. Fans do not start, display does not turn on nor do the keyboard lights. I figured it may have overheated at first, but the bottom was not hot to the touch. There were no signs of smoke or smells indicating a bad electrical problem. I've tried pretty much just holding the power button for different amounts of time (10sec, 30sec, 1min) and nothing happens. I believe I've done something to the battery but I'd like to know what. Thank you.

Hi. I'm having issues with my battery threshold option. I want the battery to stop charging when it reaches 80%. However, it will never keep the setting on forever. Although, it is not every time that it simply charges to 100% instead. Can someone help me figure out why on earth it keeps turning the battery threshold option completely off? I want to have the option on permanently so that my battery will live longer. Best regards,Jesper

Hi! I got this laptop december 2014, it worked nice until one day it decided not to turn on, instead of this, the laptop shows sleep-mode behaviour (blinking keyboard, black screen) but without waking up. It initiates randomly, key-combination doesn't work, nor pushing windows key. Additionally, if I turn off by pressing the power button and try to turn on again, it keeps to be in sleeping mode. If is turned off again and the one key recovery is pushed, nothing happens, same sleep-mode reaction. I contacted technnical assistance in Spain, they were really kind and quick taking the call. As suggested I restored the system to fabric condicions (when I got my laptop turned on and through the windows 8.1 menu restoring to initial configuration option). It seemed to solve the problem but just for few re-starts. After using the computer about 10 times (I mean, turning off and turning on the laptop), the same problem appeared. I called again technnical assistance, today they are picking up my laptop at home because I'm still warranty covered, I hope to get my 1600? laptop working well again soon. Just wanted to share this situation with other lenovo users who can be in the same situation. In my case, I'm not using this laptop as a primary computer, that's maybe why it took so long to detect/appear this problem. I already tested updating bios, drivers, energy configuration... I've used another yoga before. When I flip the screen lid like a tablet, the screen turning off.If I do not open the lid exactly, it's ok, but when I turn it 360 degrees and touch to back cover, the screen turns off.I turn off the "in power options sleep mode when the lid cloused" in Windows. I installed Windows again and installed the latest version of BIOS. Result did not change, screen is still turning off.

I have tried charging the laptop and leaving it for 18 hours to see if it dies without charge, held the power button for about 30 seconds and it still flashes and nothing happens

I have a "Yoga 710-11ISK" that is not turning on anymore. Power button LED is on but the notebook does not give any signs of life. I bought this in USA but i'm from Brazil and this notebook is different from the notebooks that are manufactured in here. I have tried turning on whith no battery, only with the cable. I've remove the SSD, WLAN, keyboard, everething that i can and nothing happens. The motherboard heats up but doesn't turn on. I put a external keyboard (USB) and no LEDs of the keyboard turn on, and a external monitor also don't turn on. I've already pressed the power button for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds.. and nothing happened.I'm trying to detect if some circuit is burned but I'm having troubles finding out.Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone been able to fix it? Does anybody has the schematics to this notebook?

Hi everyone, I have an almost 2-year Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Ideapad, and recently I lost the original charger, so I started using an Innergie universal charger which never really worked that well to begin with. Anyway, the other day, I came home from work and plugged it in to charge overnight, and didn't need it until yesterday. When I went to use it yesterday, the only response I could get from it was the light by the power button to turn on, and even then only when it was plugged into the universal charger. I didn't get any other lights - no keyboard lights, just the white light from the power button and constant white charging light with an occasional orange blink.  Then it took a while to get it to turn off. I took it to Best Buy, but the guy at the Geek Squad wasn't very helpful, and I was very reluctant to just send away my computer before I actually knew what the problem was.  I was going to try taking a look inside the computer, but I couldn't get all the screws out because I did not have the proper screwdriver.  Does anyone know what the problem might be or a possible solution? I really can't afford to not have a laptop, and I really can't afford super high repair fees.
