Inadvertantly installed xp pro twice

Q: Inadvertantly installed xp pro twice

I wanted to do a total system restore on a computer that I bought years ago. Well, now I can't delete any of the installs. I can't go my BIOS settings so that I can change my boot order settings so that I can boot from the xp pro disk.
I noticed something was wrong when my hard drive space went from having almost 20Gb left down to a tad more than 6Gb. I'm not able to delete partition or change anything so that I can do a clean install.
I'm not worried about saving photos or other data, it's nothing that I can't get back.

Thanks for any help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Why can't you access the BIOS settings?

Have you tried inserting the XP CD and then restarting and see if your computer boots from it?

I have an Acer Aspire 5570 Notebook. The cursor jumps to someplace else while typing a message. In fact it has occurred while typing this message. Usually it jumps to a place earlier in the message, but not predictable.

Sometimes the entire message disappears.

Any ideas whether it is hardware or software. Have tried interal mouse and external mouse. Same problem.

A:Cursor moves inadvertantly

By internal, you mean the laptop touchpad and by external, you mean a mouse, correct?

Have you gone into the control Panel> Mouse>>>>
1. Pointer options button> check the Snap to box.
2. Orientation tab> follow instructions and set the orientation
3. Touchpad tab> check both Tapping and Sensitivity and set each for your touch.

Check all remaining buttons in Mouse Properties and make any adjustments you need> when finished> Apply> OK.

IF you continue to get these mouse jerks, rule out the possibility of any remote connection or spyware.

Yesterday I was running Pinnacle 12.1 editing software and it was locking and running slow. I have a Dell e520 running Win XP media edition. I have had a toolbar updater running in the background causing slow and unresponsive workings, so I would go to task manager and disable it.........well yesterday I must have disabled a SVChost instead (I am positive I did) so when I went to restart it would no longer boot to windows and a blue screen appeared listing a Stop error : 0x0000007e (0xc0000005 0x860e6988 0xf7a53be8 0xf7a538e4) I tried rebooting in safe mode, last knowngood config, to no avail. stops at the blue screen of death. So I tried a system repair using the CD during boot up, it would go as far as copying files and then want to reboot.(This step: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operating ... air1_8.htm ) On reboot it went to the BSOD and windows would not boot up. I have run chkdsk from the recovery console, but came up with no results.
Is there any way to repair this problem w/o loosing all of my files? I was in the midst of editing a 2 1/2 hour DVD project and if I loose all my data I will have lost about 150 hours of editing time.
Please help!

My computer is windows xp updated, firewall protected, with updated virus protection. I keep my system running tip top. I didn't know till yesterday that my sisters comp. has no firewall, no updated virus scanner and has never ran any win. xp patches or updates. I sent her an email with an attachment that I scanned before even sending. She never opened the attachment because she said theres not much space on her computer. After repling back to me her computer started going haywire and sending lsa shell export version encountered a problem and of coarse kept shutting down windows. I looked it up, found its a sassor worm, and tried to help her clean her computer (by phone). She's a mess. we can't access hardly anything due to no available space. We couldnt even shut down system restore so we could run a worm removal. Turns out she's never defragmented either. We did that and it didn't help enough. We searched through her task manager looking under processes to find any sassor culprets. We didnt find any of the ones mentioned for the sassor worm but I read that new variants are constantly comming up. I need to find an updated list of the sassor attachments.
I really need to know...... Did I send her this? I ran a malicious software removal program and scanned my computer but nothing was found. I re scanned the draft of the letter I sent her. Download and run the McAfee AVERT Stinger on your your computer. It is a special tool to detect and remove some common viruses including the Sasser worm. It has been updated to 5/02/2005 but its a good tool. According to McAfee again, this worm finds vunerable computers that don't have a firewall. Don't beat yourself up about this because your sisters computer is wide open and it was only a matter of time before she got something. Its amazing she lasted this long. No doubt she is infested with malware. I've seen unprotected computers come up with in excess of 600 viruses after a half an hour connected to the internet without protection.Again, don't feel badly. Hey folks I have one of those WD My Book external hard drives that I have been basically using as a storage device for all my images and other essential items I need.
Somewhere along the way I must have done something wrong. Now when I have it connected to my laptop it only shows that it is showing as "CD Drive (I; ) WD Smartware" and at only one gigabyte, this is a 1 TB hard drive. I cannot get the computer to access the rest of the HD, it just shows it as an unrecognisable partition.
is there any thing out there I can use so that I can force the computer to access the rest of this hardrive?
Hopefully I have explained this right. The hard drive used to just be the I drive where I have stored tons of photos and other crucial information that I need to recover. I am thinking of just taking it into some computer guru locally to get all that info back, but I first want to know If I can take care of it myself.

Looking through my Document File "Alpha Address List"I accidently replaced the file with a Blank File of the same name . When I tried to open it there was nothing in there. I looked in the Recycle bin there were no files in there at all. Where had it gone ? How could I find it and restore it?

I believe I made a grave error next as I went into the Recovery Programme and picked a recovery point which was 4 or 5 days back from the day my "Alpha Address List" file went missing. When the restore had been completed I looked at the "Alpha Address File" and just a blank copy of that was there.

I realise now that all the recovery programme did was restore the Windows System Files and not the Office 10 personal document "doc" files.

It may be a lost cause now but is there any way I can retrieve the "Alpha Address List" file back .

Any assistance wiould be appreciated

So, my old hard drive on my M91p Tower was failing, and I was unable to boot into Windows 7 Professional. I replaced the hard drive, reinstalled Windows 7 Professional. It authenticates, all was good, I was happy. Then I left it installing software overnight. I woke up, it was 'asleep'. Wouldn't wake. Had to turn it off, and then when I restarted, I got the intel black screen 'OS Not Found' screen. Finally, I managed to insert the installation disc, shut down without installing by declining to reinstall it, and when I booted back up it started normally. My question is: What's going on? How do I fix this?  I didn't have Lenovo media to reinstall from, and used a Windows 7 ISO disk install. How do I fix this?  My last week have been a gauntlet of trying to fix errors. I really want to put to rest the issue so I can go on with my work regularly. What can I do?

A:HDD died. installed a new one, installed OS. Now it give black screen "Operating System Not Found

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it.  You left it reinstalling software..  It is possible that some installation failed and left the machine in a state where it needed to be completely powered off.  It is possible it is a hardware error in the M91p.  As I said, it is hard to diagnose without seeing it.

XPS13 with Windows 10.  See screen shot below.  Dell Support Assist program says the two driver updates are recommended.  clicking "install" it shows progress to install, then says installed, but on refresh or re-entry to the program it still shows them as needing to be installed.  No errors generated.  Other driver updates done the same way without issue.  Suggestions?

A:Dell SupportAssist - says driver updates are installed but still showing need to be installed after refresh?

Don't use Dell Support assist with windows 10. Windows 10 will install generic drivers if Dell doesn't have win 10 drivers. You should mention the full model name of the computer. Does Dell support your model for upgrading to win 10? If so, get the win 10 drivers from Dell Drivers and Downloads.

hi peoples

i have installed my media centre for the 3rd time in a month. Due to various issues. (1 being sleep) Now i have installed the same drivers as the first build for HDMI audio and video, which i had perfect dvd playback and tv on, however i am faced with errors about video drivers not properly installed.

Last time it was the HDMI driver which i have installed and reinstalled 3 times. It seems every time i follow the exact same process at rebuilding vista 64 i get a different result.

Is there a way you can reset media centre so it checks the drivers all over again. I am interested in resetting audio and video if possible

A:Vista x64 media centre video drivers not installed or installed incorrectly

Hi, audiophile, and welcome to the forums.

It would help to know your Graphics card and setup - I have installed Vista Ultimate x64 twice - once for testing, and then a format and reinstall as I changed the partition setup - since then (2 months now) I have not had a single issue with WiMP / WMC.

A virus or something hit my Compaq computer. I have Windows XP and Norton Anti-virus. Norton was in the process of blocking the virus when the system froze up completey and a re-boot was the only option. Some of the XP start up files were corrupted or deleted or something, so that Windows XP will no longer start properly. The welcome screen comes up fine, but the desktop is now just a completely blank blue screen, no error messages, no icons, no start menu, task bar....nothing. So I cannot open any programs or do anything except CNTRL ALT DEL to shut down or restart. I tried to do a restore in safe mode - didn't work. Then I tried to re-install XP in repair mode, and I kept getting error messages that certain (multiple) files could not be copied. In the end, the repair installation was unsuccessful. So, I did a complete new install of Windows XP to a new folder (c:\windows2). This install worked fine. Now there are 2 versions of XP on my computer and when I boot up I have to choose which one to use. My question is regarding the programs that were already installed, such as MS Office, Norton Anti-Virus, Family Tree Maker etc. How do I get the newly installed XP to recognize these programs which were previously used by the now dysfunctional XP? Hi,
I see you have already run several tools. when you ran FRST it produced another log called addition.txt that you can find in the same location you have FRST. Can you post that log. We will also get another tool to use.

Usually Iam only on line once or twice per day so you may not get a response back from me until the following day.

Download TDSSKiller (exe or zip version) and save it to your desktop.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/
Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
Accept the EULA and KSN statement to continue the install
Click the SCAN button to start.
If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
If no reboot is required or no threats found click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents  in your reply.
If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of     TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

It works fine, however, after I installed my newly created DVD, I found an update that said "You must install this patch before you install SP1. I installed Windows 7 to a machine that had XP already installed. When I start the computer it just boots into XP. There is no boot manager giving me an option to boot to Win 7. I accessed repair from the Win 7 disk on start up and ran bootrec /fixboot and it said everything was cool but same issue. When I was installing Win 7 it ran thru the whole set up routine and restarted several times into Win 7. I shut it down when it said it was finished but the next morning it started up in XP. Would fixmbr help if fixboot didn't? Any suggestions?

A:installed win 7 dual boot with XP already installed, can't access Win

Confirm that the 100mb System Reserved (if you have it) or Win7 partition (if you don't) is Partition Marked Active,

then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts and is marked System Active in Disk Mgmt.

Then install EasyBCD (click Download - no Name or Email required) to Win7 to add XP by name, allow it to autocomplete drive letter, Save and reboot to Dual Boot menu.

If any further problems, post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

to boot up. Here's my issue I have a HP Desk top w/ a standard 320 GB hard Drive. I bought a new Hard drive (1 TB Western Digital) so that I could move everything to the new one and use the old one as storage. I had trouble even formatting the new drive but eventually got it and successfully installed a full version of Win 7. (the old hard drive has Win Vista with Win 7 upgrade on it. When I boot up the computer I receive a message asking which WIN 7 i want to use and actually either one works. I wanted to format my old drive so that I would only have one Operating system w/ WIN 7 installed.

I tried to format it (the old drive) at the command prompt, but alas it wouldn't let me. So, I said the hell with it and opened the case and disconnected the power cord first and then I unplugged the SATA cable as well as the power cable to the hard drive. I tried to re-start the computer but now it says cannot find something, unable to read or error. So, I take it something is missing from the new WIN 7 install to my new hard drive? WOuld luv a simple fix explanation from someone waay more knowledgeable than myself. Thanks in Advance!

A:How do I get my newly installed Hard Drive (1TB) with Win 7 installed

Did you by any chance have both drives connected when you reinstalled? If so, your boot files may be on the 320 gig drive.

Try running a startup repair--you may have to run it 3 times.

I recently installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for my Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit edition. As the installation finished the computer restarted and I did not give it another thought. Later on I returned to the Windows Update screen to see if there were any recent updates available for my PC. To my surprise all the older updates that I previously installed before the service pack installation have reappeared. My question now is, Do I reinstall the older updates? and Will they overwrite any files that the Service Pack 1 installation has already installed?

A:Win 7 SP1 Installed, Previously Installed Updates Reappear

If they are already installed and the new updates overwrite, it is not going to cause a problem. The worst that could happen is that you will be up to date.

Hi All~I need big time help! LOL most likely easy for all of you...Have 2 Issues right now.
1st- Dell desktop's apc backups BE550G has circuit breaker that won't go back in, learned that it is 6 yrs old and needs to be replaced. On tower it has power amber flashing light with the numbers 1,2,3,4 lit up in green and APC told me that due to the bad circuit breaker my tower is in hibernating mood (Not sure any of this is true) and that with new backups it will be good to go. Totally lost on resolution for this issue. By the way the monitor screen has amber light

2nd-Desperately need to print a very important document. My printer connected to desktop and it is plugged in and powers on so I think it is working?
Messy situation=
I was given a Dell Inspiron 1501 that has Vista and then Win7 was installed over it without uninstalling Vista.-as I understand things.
My printer is a Dell AIO 924, I have original disc but have no idea if I can install Dell AIO 924 on laptop (compatibility issue as well as needing new drivers if they are even available;
If it can be installed I'm not sure if I have enough space on laptop

Unless you couldn't tell, I am in a total panic attack LOL!!! All of it seems to be a big mess and I can't do any more research as I don't know what to look for.
Listen, I would not hold anything against this great site and great community if you don't make any suggestions or help, I truly mean it as reading this I sound like I'm... Read more

Hi,

Firstly thanks for your help.

I have a problem with windows update kb3045999. It has caused a lot of problems on my system, with programs not loaded after booting (eg notepad, IE etc return error code The application was unable to start (0xc0000018). I understand that this is a known error and many have posted about it online. I can reboot my computer a number of times and eventually the programmes will work as normal, however that is a bit of a pain.

From reading online it appears the way to fix the problem is to uninstall the update. I thought I had done that but the error kept happening. I then had the idea of reinstalling the update and uninstalling again in-case it did not uninstall correctly, however when I try to install the update it advises me that it is already installed and when I try to uninstall it using the wusa /uninstall command I am advised that the update is not installed.

Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks

Michael

Hi, I downloaded Avira onto my new laptop before realising that Mcafee was already on there. I have since read that I should have removed Mcafee first. I have done that now using the Windows uninstall option and also using the tool on the Mcafee website but wondered if there was anything else I needed to do, and also if I would have any problems because of this? It's a Toshiba laptop running Windows 8.

Thanks.

I can barely download programs because it involves the web browser and always goes to the D drive. Is there any way i can transfer my things from the D drive back to the C drive. My c drive has like 69GM free space.

if i reinstall, is there a possibility that it will install to C drive. if so can you guide me? I have an Sp2 operating system CD, but the problem was when i tried to use same cd and cd key, it rejected it so i got an sp3 cd and it was able to install, but then it installed to the wrong drive, D. I really wanted everything to install to drive C as my primary drive

A:When I installed SP3 it installed my operating system to D drive

You need to make backup of all your documents, data etc. before you think of re-installing.

Then put XP Cd in and boot computer off it.
Do not choose to repair existing XP installations but do a clean install.
When the screen comes to choose a partition, choose the first partition. Later choose to format the the selected partition using NTFS.

Now you will have a clean install of XP with C: drive as root drive

Okay, I pretty much screwed myself.

I just bought a computer a couple months ago that came with Vista and was having major problems with the USB ports (it wouldn't even read my brand-new IPOD), and I read somewhere that i could install XP on a computer like mine...and I did just that. The instructions said to create a partition so I did that, and then I installed XP. Now I can't access any of my programs, my drivers don't work, and I don't have a recovery disc nor did my computer come with a Vista DVD with which to re-install Vista with. I went from bad to worse.

I would much rather just deal with the USB problem than what I have now, and I have a warranty so I would like to take it back, but my problem is, how do I put Vista back? How can I delete XP?? I tried going through the BIOS and I don't see anything that can help me.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I'm totally desperate. Thank you.

Hi everyone,

I'm currently running BitDefender 9 but it is going to expire in a few days time so I was after the new version. I downloaded the trial from the BitDefender website but when I tried to install it, I was told I needed to uninstall my current version.

I went to Add/Remove programs like usual but for some reason BitDefender is not listed. I went to BitDefender in programs and clicked 'modify, repair or uninstall' and it tells me 'this action is only valid for products that are currently installed'.

I have no idea how I'm meant to uninstall BitDefender 9 since it is not listed! The program is clearly running and installed so I have no idea why it would not be shown as a currently installed program!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:neo basic 2165 - 4gb installed but only shows 3gb installed

Hello Joey,

Its simple, your computer cannot use 4GB of RAM as your computer is using Windows 32bit. To use 4GB or more RAM, you will need to have installed Windows 64 bit. Windows 32bit can only use around 3.25GB RAM, although this might vary between different computers. Could you tell me you CPU name so I could check if it supports 64 bit?

Hello all.

I have a Windows XP machine that keeps telling me that I need to install 2 security updates.

KB956572 and KB981852. The problem is that these updates are already installed and appear in my Add/Remove Programs. So I go ahead and install the updates again anyway. The machine says the updates installed successfully. However after a system reboot, the same 2 updates pop up again saying that they need to be installed.

I have removed/uninstalled the updates in question. Re-installed them. No success. They still come up as needing to be installed. I have tried re-registering the windows updates components and have cleared the temporary folders of windows update but still the same result.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas? Thanks.

I have an asrock 939 dual sata2 motherboard and an AMD 64 3800 cpu, I have run xp fine for years but thought I would upgrade to Vista,
I got Vista Ultimate 32bit and then found about the ram limit on 32 bit OS, but for some reason I get more ram showing up in vista when there is less in the motherboard?
When i have 3 x 1gb stick in it shows up as 2.5GB ram, but when I put 4 x 1gb sticks in it takes it back down to 2gb (which is what it showed when I only had 2 x 1gb sticks in)
I then installed vista ultimate 64 bit and all 4GB showed up fine ( I did this to check it wasnt the ram that was faulty) I would have kept 64 bit but I couldnt find any wifi drivers to work so I have gone back to 32bit ultimate.
Is there anything I can do to get the right amount it should be when i have 4gb in?
Do you think the system will run quicker with 4gb in even though it only shows 2gb or should i take a stick out so it shows 2.5gb?
Ive looked on a lot of forums and it seems most people can get 3gb showing when 4gb is in so any ideas why its not working for me?
