Upgrading an Inspiron 5348 to Windows 10

Q: Upgrading an Inspiron 5348 to Windows 10

Hello, Just over a year ago we bought an Inspiron 5348 with Windows 8.1 down here in New Zealand. It was OK for a few months and one day got totally messed up because I decided to follow instructions and update Windows - BIG MISTAKE. The computer was completely messed up. I got some help from Dell (Asia Pacific I guess) at the time, but in the end muddled through with reinstalling Windows 8.1 using Dell recovery program. The advice from Dell was to reinstall windows and update only once and never again (which seemed strange to me). Anyway it has been fine since then (without ANY updating).
My question is about updating to Windows 10 - is this going to be a problem with the Inspiron 5348 that has not been updated in months? I don't have the notice urging me to update to Windows 10 that I have heard about, maybe because I haven't done any updates since the big problem I had months ago.
So should I forget about trying to update to Windows 10? Or would it actually be an improvement or Windows 8.1 which appears to be rather unstable?
Cheers, Paul

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I browsed Windows 10 introductory videos and it does look pretty good/ easy to use. I wonder what problems there might be using Windows 10 compared with Windows 8.1

I don't see any problem. I'm overjoyed with my upgrade to Win 10. You will need to be as lucky as me, though, to get a near perfect experience, judging from posts others have done. If it isn't perfect from the start, could be you are in deep trouble. Therefore, make those images. Win 10 will have its own built-in revert capability, which usually works - but sometimes that too fails, I read. Make your own! Follow the recommendations in that Dell article I posted to update drivers both before & after the upgrade...
http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN297955#System-Support-Matrix
Windows 10 Upgrade Walkthrough
I went to read posts about it while the upgrade was sitting in Windows Update (or wherever that put it). I had told it to wait - remind me later - fully intending to try, having made two images & a clone of Win 8.1. When I got back, I was a tad queasy over the complaints I'd read. I'm not sure now whether I accidentally clicked something to make it start or it started on its own - but after about 4 automatic reboots over maybe two hours - all was fine. I'm overjoyed!
I've lost no capability or file that I had in Win 8.1, that I can see. Some settings screens are difficult to find, but that was always so. Things are as quick as ever. Possibly McAfee stopped updating its definitions due to the upgrade. I've uninstalled it & put my trust in Windows Defender & Windows Firewall, which both are impressive, especially the firewall. Some very irksome events dropped out of Event Viewer, but new ones are there which some day I shall investigate. But less/nothing is there having me worrying over hardware as in Win 8.1, though that worry was likely false. Event Viewer errors often are bogus. I've got no problem in Win 10 that I didn't have in Win 8.1, which already wasn't much. Both "SFC /Scannow" & DISM continue to report no errors.
In Win 10, one can no longer permanently prevent critical updates to enter through Windows Update. So, I hope your difficulty with that is over. You can prevent driver updates, but it's best when there is no need to. I haven't personally found one.
I'm overjoyed with Win 10, build 10240. I hope that's what you'll be getting, because, last I read, the new one - Threshold 2 or Version 1511- has been withdrawn. It's problematic. I'll go for it only when offered through Windows Update, when I trust the bugs are fixed. I'll have a fresh set of images & a clone at the ready, though.

Hi everybody, I successfully upgraded my Inspiron 5348 to Windows 10 recently but after a few days it suddenly got screwed up, I assume after an update or something.
The taskbar no longer has any icons, the clock is missing, the Windows icon doesn't work at all.
I am lucky I can get to the internet to write this.
Anybody have any suggestions?
Should I go back to Windows 8.1?
Cheers, Paul

Your computer is listed on the approved list for the upgrade. Go to Dell Support, Drivers and Downloads to get the drivers you need for Win 10.You can use the link for Support at the top of this page. Dell did a good job with the driver updates for win 10 on the Drivers and Download page. Allow Dell to scan your computer to see what you need.

p.s. I managed to see the control panel and saw an option to go back to Windows 7 - but I never had Windows 7!

A:Inspiron 5348, Upgraded to Windows 10, all messed up?

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
Windows 7 is probably what the system came with.
You could restart the system and check if you are able to book into windows via " safe mode with networking" .
The upgrade would have had issue and all the update would not have been installed on the system.
Kindly share the service tag to the system via private message .
Thanks

Recently my all-in-one computer has stopped working and will not turn on. The power supply test button LED lights up and all of the fans turn on, so I know power is getting to the motherboard. Because it is an all-in-one I feel like my hands are tied when trying to diagnose the issue. I am familiar with using ATX but not this form factor, I would have tried to short the power headers to see if it was possibly just the power switch. I've switched power cords, unplugged non essential components, and switched the RAM to a different slot. I suspect it's the power switch, PSU, or motherboard. I'm clueless as to where to go from here and any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hi, the unit "works" fine but yesterday at some point the display began truncating the information. The truncation begins with power-on. (you can tell by the dell-logo and all you can see at the bottom is the option for F12 -- boot etc. (shouldn't there be an F2 listed also?  Part of the screen (about 25-33%) is a lighter shade of purple (vs. the dell logo screens charcoal).  Not sure if a user was messing with _something_.
It strikes me as an aspect ratio change or a an outright defect.  Ran the diagnostics under F12 and nothing turned up.  The 5348 has no buttons on the unit allowing access to on-screen monitor settings (eg aspect ratio)
Anyone ever encounter this? Anybody know how to get at the display settings for the machine?  thanks, B

Hi folks,
Bought my 6yo son a Dell Inspiron 23 5348 about 1.5 years ago. 2 things...

The screen has a single pixel wide, solid dead line from the top to the bottom of the screen that's slightly annoying. It's definitely hardware since its there in the BIOS as well as in Windows. Is this usually the display screen itself or the interface card? Have 600 days left on warranty still and would like to order the correct part and get it replaced. Just not sure if its the screen or interface card I should request.
Came with a 1G hard drive that's sloooooow! I've got a new Samsung 850 EVO 512GB SSD here I'd like to pop in however when I boot I'm asked to select F1, F2 or F5. Pushing F2 for setup does in fact show that the bios sees the SSD but I cant set any boot order. Any tips on what I need to do to get the SSD drive to be seen?

Thank for any suggestions.

Hi, I have a Inspiron 24 5348 that I purchased in Australia. It has been working fine in England (we share similar power 220-240V), but I am about to move to Japan (they use 100V).
The manual that I found on the dell website (linked below) lists the Input voltage as 100 VAC–240 VAC and the Input frequency as 50 Hz–60 Hz.
Does this simply mean that models sold in different countries will accept different voltage? Or does this mean that, like a laptop, this all-in-one desktop can be used on both voltages and thus will be fine in Japan?
Is there any way to test this without harming my computer?

In my experience this is usually caused by Drivers, but in this case I cant be certain. If it was me i would run a couple of diagnostic tests as mentioned in this post.
1. Try reinstalling the drivers. You can download them from the Dell drivers and support section of this site.
2. Update the drivers
3. Run diagnostics
4. Check if you have any third party screen enhancing software that might cause malfunctions and uninstall it

I have an Inspiron One 2305 All in One with touch display and was planning to upgrade to Windows 8.  However, I just noticed on the Dell Support site that they do not support the upgrade, and thus, don't recommend owners of this computer doing the upgrade.

A:Upgrading Inspiron 2305 to Windows 8???

Not supporting a model does not mean it won't work. It just means Dell will not provide win 8 drivers, software etc. Download and run the Windows Upgrade Assistant on the win 8 download page to see if your hardware will work with win 8 and then decide. IMO you should stay with win 7. Windows 8 will not help with Touch without win 8 drivers for it. It might not even work at all.

AMD/ATI never released a Windows 8 driver for the X1300, so it's unlikely you'll find it works with Windows 10.  You're better off leaving the system on Windows 7 for the duration of its usable life -- WIndows 7 has a few more years of support left.

After upgrading to Windows 10, my Inspiron One 2320 screen now flickers red, green blue, white and black.  I connected an external monitor that works fine.  I ran all diagnostic test that were all successful.  I contacted Dell support several times and was no help other telling me that "Dell does not support the upgrading of its computers to Windows 10."  I ran a driver update program to possibly update the graphic driver to Windows 10, this did not work.  I would consider even replacing the graphic card to one that might work with Windows 10 if I could only get model numbers of graphic cards that are compatible.
My Inspiron One 2320 has loaded properly before and sometimes just starts working after a few minutes or hour of using it with the external monitor.  There seems to be either a glitch, a loose connection.  The Inspiron One 2320 Screen shows the Dell and Windows logo, bios, etc.  Any other test that I can perform or graphic card models I can try?

After two days of unsuccesful attempting to install Windows 10 (from Windows 7) the newest Windows OS software installed correctly on my Inspiron N411z with Intel i5 (and upgraded to a SSD HD two years ago). BUT, now it does not switch automatically between audio coming from the build-in speakers to a headphone connected with the headphone socket visa versa. The Original Smartaudio software interfered with Windows 10 and does not offer a new windows 10 safe version. After having read various advices I de-installed and de-activated the Original Smartaudio from my laptop. Default audiodrivers is now the microsoft audio driver. I can switch between speaker-sound and headphone sound "manually" by going to sound settings and setting either speakers or headphone as the standard. But this is annoying. Anybody a solution to get the switching done automatically like before?

Hello everyone,

Both the laptops Dell Inspiron 15R and Dell Inspiron 7548 came with 6 GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade it to at least 12 GB by replacing the 2 GB dimms in both laptops with 8 GB dimms.

Was wondering whether it is safe and okay to combine different memory modules from different manufacturers.

I'm also leaving the US next week and so would prefer getting RAM that's more reliable and wouldn't mess up the laptops.

Could you guys please recommend which ones you'd get? I've bought Samsung and Crucial in the past and didn't have any issues.

Here's the existing RAM information from CPU–Z:

Inspiron 15R:

Inspiron 7548:

Based on the above information, could you please recommend the sticks that you would get, preferably from Amazon?

Dell's upgrade page for Inspiron 15R recommends this one:

Dell 8 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 1600MHz LV SODIMM : Memory | Dell which is 1600 MHz.

So can I get this one for that laptop: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at Amazon.com

This would match the manufacturer of the existing stick (Kingston).

Dell's upgrade page recommended the same stick for Dell Inspiron 7548 as well.

Since I wasn't able to locate Hyundai's 8GB stick, is it okay if I get Kingston or Crucial's stick:

You can use any 2.5" 7 mm SATA notebook SSD you wish -- however, this system is a SATA 3G, so you won't see the full performance of any SSD (most are now 6G drives).

I recently purchased an Inspiron 9300 and it has a 1.6 centrino.  Is there a way that I can upgrade the processor?

A:Upgrading Inspiron 9300

Yes, to a faster Pentium M CPU.  The Core CPUs (Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, Core Solo, Pentium Dual Core, or Celerons based on them) cannot be used.

The fastest is the Pentium M 780 (2.26/533).   These haven't been made in some time but may still be available as old stock or used.

My girlfriend recently bought me a Dell Inspiron 5675 Gaming Desktop and it was the lowest model with the AMD 7th Generation CPU and was wondering if there was any way to upgrade that to the Ryzen 5 and the GPU without voiding the warranty. Is there a way I could purchase them from Dell?

A:Upgrading the Inspiron 5675?

Return the desktop and buy the one with the features you.
A better GPU means bigger power supply is needed.

So I won this laptop on Ebay for about 250, refurbished and all stock stuff. Downside was that it only has 32BG of Hard Drive space and 2 gigs of ram. I looked up what it needs and everywhere I looked, even Dell's own product page, said I can upgrade the ram to 4GB. Ordered the specific ram it needed, opened it up....... soldered ram....? No slots anywhere to add or replace anything. Even the HDD wasn't a thing, it was a tiny chip soldered into the motherboard. What blew my mind the most was that there is a hard drive caddy slot for a laptop drive with absolutely no way of plugging one in. I learned the hard drive space can only be upgraded via another motherboard, but I am still able to upgrade the ram using what I bought. My question is, how? I see now slots to plug it in, and I have taken this thing apart down to the screen looking for them. Is Dell leading me on? Because I've had three tech support members all tell me I can still upgrade.

Do you know if that machine is Win 7 compatible at all, drivers aside?

I wouldn't get frantic about drivers.

Your Windows install disc should have most of them; you might get a few more from Windows Update.

I would go to Dell's website and download your Ethernet (NIC) driver in case Windows doesn't install it. It's the most important driver as you need it to get on the net.

Of course, it wouldn't do any harm to download all possible drivers from Dell, but I wouldn't necessarily install them. See how Windows own drivers do for you.

After you install and get updated, inspect the functionality of your hardware and take a look in Device Manager. If anything is goofy at that time, then look around for other drivers.

Hey everyone just a couple of questions if any one could do me the favor and help me. I currently have a dell inspiron M5030 and I would like to do a couple of things to it to improve the appearance and better performance. So here we go.

1.) where can I go to upgrade the ram? I currently have three and would love to upgrade to the maximum of 6. What brands should I be looking for that may be better then the Dell versions.

2.) I would like to try and replace the stock keyboard for something that lights up the keys. But please do not refer me to a external light. If it is not possible then could you direct me somewhere that has keyboards that will fit that have different colors, Styles etc...

Thank you again in advance

Hey all, I've have my Inspiron 660 for well over two years. It has all the original parts, except the PSU which I recently upgraded to the Corsair cx500. I'm still fairly new to upgrading computers and I was wondering which would be the best Graphics Card for my to upgrade to, keeping in mind a lower budget.
If you need more information to help me find a Graphics Card, let me know.

I am attempting to upgrade memory from 4GB to 8GB Windows 10 64 bit. I added Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory CT102464BF160B to the system, there is only 1 bank, and system will not boot. I thought the new memory might be bad so it ordered a new memory. Same results.  According to the Dell manual I just take out the old memory and add the new.  Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I'll start off by saying I bought my laptop back in Oct of 2015 and I've been using my Inspiron 15 daily, and most part it gets the job done. I'm able to use my Wacom Bamboo easily and Adobe Flash works well enough but takes a minute to open. I've noticed the HDD is starting to show its age already. Bootup takes minutes now, and the Disk is constantly running at 100% when only Chrome is open. I'm no tech expert but seems to be early signs of hard drive failure even though it barely leaves my desk and has about 870GB/1TB free.
So I hopped on Amazon to get a replacement SSD, a SATA 3.0 USB connector, and a 16GB thumbdrive for backup & recovery.

This is my first upgrade, I've been looking up videos but just don't wanna mess anything up when I take the 1TB HDD out and put the SSD in there. Will I be safe making a backup of Windows 10 to the 16GB thumbdrive, then proceeding to replace the HDD for a clean install of Windows?
Thanks!

My laptop comes with dual drives, 128 gb m.2 ssd and 500 gb 5400 rpm hdd. Can I use the migration software to clone first my 128 gb ssd to the 500 gb hdd, then replace the existing ssd with the evo, then clone it back to the new ssd?
