1 GB Iomega USB 2.0 HDD errors

Q: 1 GB Iomega USB 2.0 HDD errors

Hi All,

I desperately need ask for your help to solve my problems with an Iomega external HDD. As it is right now I cannot use my brave new storage because it simple does not work the way it is supposed to.
I hope we can remedy this problem..

I've recently purchased an 1TB Iomega Select Desktop Hard Drive (PC/Mac) that connects with an USB 2.0 port to my laptop. I have formatted the drive to NTFS.

I have the following issues with the drive:

A, When I'm using the drive under Windows XP SP3, I encounter with the following problems:
I. If I'm downloading several files with torrent (filesize <= 50MB) and the download destination is the Iomega storage, and the download speed is around 2-3 Megabytes / sec, after a some minutes (not more than 30 minutes), Windows XP pops up the following Delayed Write error message:

"Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file [name_of_the_file_you_want_to_save].
The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."

Furthermore, I cannot access the drive anymore after the error message. The drive seems to be recognized but the folders seem to be empty. If I restart the PC, Windows does not recognize the drive connected.
The drive is recognized again if I disconnect and reconnect the power supply of the Iomega drive.

- I have tried disabling caching (Windows setting for optimal performance) and delayed disk write (torrent client setting) but no use. The error still persists.
- I have tried using another USB cable but did not make any difference, I still get the error message.
- I have tried all 3 of the USB ports available on my laptop. No use.
- I have connected the drive to an USB Hub (DLink 4-Port Hi-Speed USB Hub but that does not make any difference either.

II. If I'm extracting large (6GB+) files (e.g with total commander) on the Iomega Drive I get a "Read Error" message and the may fail. The rest of the error symptoms are the same as described above. This error occurs 2 or 3 times from 5 tries.

Copying large files from the Iomega drive to my laptop's HDD works fine without error.

B, When I'm using the drive under Windows 7 (x86) , I encounter with the following problems:

I. If I'm downloading several files with torrent (filesize <= 50MB) and the download destination is the Iomega storage, and the download speed is around 2-3 Megabytes / sec, after a some minutes (usually not more than 30 minutes), Windows hangs. The mouse pointer freezes and I cannot do anything with the Operating System, so I have to hard reset the computer.
The Iomega drive is not recognized afterwards and I must replug the power cable (just as with A/1) to get the drive recognized again.
Windows 7 does not always hang up in case of downloading through torrent to the Iomega Drive.

I've just seen another kind of error symptom which did not freeze my Operating System , however the drive was unaccessible afterwards:
- "Error: The system cannot find the file specified" error message from utorrent client during download. In this case Windows can see the folders and SOME of my files on the drive but most of the folders are empty, even those which have nothing to do with the torrent (e.g. my documents folder.)
The drive cannot be written, "scandisk-ed", or unmounted, files cannot be accessed or transferred (not even those visible.) So the files seem to be there but actually they aren't.
After pulling out and plugging back the power cord of the storage , Windows recognizes the drive and I can access my files.
The torrent download cannot be resumed, not even after a windows restart + storage drive power replug. It says at the hash check that "The system cannot find the file specified." This may happen with completed downloads as well , which I have been seeding for hours.

II. Same as described under A/2.

I'm using a Fujitsu (Siemens) Amilo L7320gw laptop. Its specs are as follows:
Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Type: Celeron M
Processor Speed: 1.7 GHz
Chipset: VIA VN800
Bus Speed: 400 MHz
Installed RAM: 1024 MB
RAM Technology: DDR2 SDRAM
RAM Speed: 533 MHz
HDD Storage Controller Type: IDE (PATA)
Expansion Ports: 3 x USB 2.0, VGA out, RJ-11 (modem), RJ-45

Please help me to solve this before I go crazy!

Please tell me what to check if further investigation is necessary for giving an advice.

Thanks in advance for every helpful word.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: 1 GB Iomega USB 2.0 HDD errors

Typically I would guess that the drive isn't getting enough power, but since it is a 1TB drive (and there currently aren't any laptop drives that size) that it is a regular full size external with its own power supply.

So given that, I would download SeaTools for Windows and run the short and long DST on it and see if it passes. You've tried the Windows settings I would have also suggested.

Hello,

I run the Data processing center for a local company. We get all sorts of information via ZIP disk, and latly have been getting all sorts of errors regarding these disks. Most common is the error message: "Disk is not formatted, do you wish to format now?"

Now, there are several things that could be the problem. I have taken into consideration it may be a hardware issue. The baffling fact is that some disks work fine, other don't. I have also considered that the OS platform that the customer is formatting the disk in may be formatting in NTFS while we proceed to run in a Win98 (fat32) enviroment. Win98 trying to read an NTFS file structure may cause this type or error, but the fact is I am 90% sure that most of our customers run Win98 as well. Chances are slim that they run anything newer or more robust because of their company size.

I would like any input that you can offer that may help clear this issue up for us. Some questions that I have are: Are there different types of ZIP disks, and if so, would my older IOMEGA ZIP drive not be able to read some of them? Are there any phisical differences in the disks I should note?

Please inform me to any of the issues that may help clear this problem up for me.

Thank you,

Lyrical

When I plug my hard drive in it is recognised however I have several problems.

1) If I start a large file transfer halfway through the drive 'disappears' and the transfer hasn't finished.
2) when I try to 'safely remove hardware' it tells me it is the volume cannot be stopped now and the drive 'disappears' from My Computer.
3) If I try to plug the hard drive in again it does not recognise it, usually I have to wait a bit and then plug it in again.

I have tried using Disk Management to format it but it is stuck to NTFS (is that a problem?) and it tells me it is healthy. Quick format works but normal format stops after a while and the drive disappears from My Computer again.

Any suggestions.

when it happened the first time i just unplugged some wires and put them back in, and it said "new hardware detected" and it worked... but this time that wont work, i've tried going into my control panel and adding new hardware and it says that the iomega parallel port interface is not working properly and i have no idea what that means...
when i check the device tab it has a little exclamatiion point next to it...
i uninstalled the cd rw and all its software and re installed.. i've unhooked it completely and then put it back. and nothing works...

I have an iomega external hard drive, or mass storage device. It was working fine and the blue light is still on, however my computer cant see the files. The USB port is working, I tried unistalling the driver and reinstalling, that did not work.

A:Iomega down

Try it on another computer and try another USB cable. USB drives frequently break due to the nature of their use, it's possible that either the USB part for the enclosure has failed/broken or the the internal drive has failed or broken. If you want the data off it or want to attempt to salvage it and not worried about warranty then you can disassemble the unit and remove the drive and try the drive internally in a computer, it's just a SATA drive inside, or attempt to use it with another enclosure and hope the drive is not dead.

You probably need to reinstall the Windows 95 USB support.

Get out your 95 CD and do a Find, File on it for USBSUPP - when you find it, double click on it to run the installation.

Hi,
I have a 1 TB Iomega, usb plus AC plug connection. I was moving my laptop and pulled it off the desk onto the floor. About 2 1/2 foot drop. My win7 pc still shows the drive by letter but when I try to access the drive the pc returns a message the the drive needs to be formatted. The drive contains my movie collection. I don't know how many, but a lot.
I read some of the posts after a search and downloaded Recuva. But it stopped responding once I selected the drive with the browse feature. I then downloaded testdisk but had trouble understanding how to use it. Any advice would be appreciated.

I looked and searched, but didn't find the answer to my problem. Maybe I didn't look hard enough, or use the right keywords. In anycase, I have a problem with one of my ZIP disks.

Somehow it's locked, i mean locked and frozen ready for the grave. I dunno how it happened. The other disks work fine, but this one I can't do anything with at all. The drive won't read it, won't even recognize that it is in the slot so I can look at the properties. Is there anyway I can open this disk, or save what files are in there?

Hey Everyone,

I have a Iomega 16x10x40 CD-RW and can't seem to get it to work. I plugged it in the USB port and it finds it and asked for a driver. So I went to the web site and this is what they said:
Drivers are not required to be downloaded. All necessary drivers are included in the OS, except for Windows 95/98. This means that your CD-RW drive will be detected as a CD-ROM drive, but you will NOT be able to burn CD's unless CD burning software is installed.

Any Ideas?

Hi there:

I have an Iomega 100 Zip Drive. Yeah, I know it's a few years old! The reason I still use it is because I have several discs and it's been working- up until now.

Today, I put in a disc and what normally happens is a little green light in the front comes on and begins flashing then the light goes out. That same green lit button is what I can use to eject the disc. Now, what's happening is the light stays on solid green. I cannot eject the disc. And my computer is not even detecting the hardware by showing me the icon when I click on "My Computer".

Is it something to do with my computer? Or the Zip Drive itself? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have and Iomega HDD120 External Desktop FireWire/USB 2.0 Drive, and recently it just stopped working. The other day, I got on my pc, and tried to load up my harddrive, and as soon as I powered it on, it started to make a clicking/grinding sound. So, I went to Iomega, called them, and looked at the FAQ, and it said to immediately power it down, as leaving it on could strip the drive. So, I did. I then went to their data recovery site, and they said that it would cost $5,000 to retrieve my data. I don't have that kind of money, is there anyway that I could retrieve it for less money? This has everything of mine since I was 5 years old, so it is really important to me!

Anny: Try copying the file from the zip to your hard drive using Windows Explorer. Then try working on it from your hard drive. If you successfully get it copied to your hard drive, I would run scandisk on your zip drive and see if you can't recover that file. If not, format the zip drive, making sure there are no bad sectors (if so, trash the zipdisk), and copy the file back onto it if the zip is still good.

My Iomega Home Storage NAS is suddenly not accessable. It is formatted in Linux (I believe). Can I in any way connect it via USB as an external HDD and save my files? My computer has Win7 64b. If I try to connect the drive via USB, I cannot see it in "My computer" but it is present in Diskmanager.

Thank you in advance for any help. ELLPER

I have a 80GB Iomega External HD. The HD has gone and I'm looking to replace it with a 200GB. I went down to my local shop and they said that I would need to find out if the HD was compatiable first. Does anyone know if I can replace the HD in the Iomega External HD with a 200GB ATA model?

Thanks.

A:Replacement HD for a Iomega External HD?

Is there anything unusual about the Iomega? Otherwise, if it is a 3.5" ATA and you are replacing it with a larger 3.5" ATA, can't see how you would run into a problem. I hava a couple of USB type external drives and you can switch the hdd without a hitch.

Opening external drive boxes can be tricky. Sometimes you have to use a round cylindrical something to release the clips.

I have been online with iOmega support earlier, but they could not resolve my problem. I bought a computer with no parallel port so I had to purchase a NetMos PCI ECP Parallel port. I have tried the options not use interrupt, not use if possible and interrupt assigned to port. Enabled legacy plug and play. Tried assigning to LPT1-3. IRQ is 17. I/O A000-A007 and A400-A407. Device is working properly and I tried hooking up an old parallel printer with no problem at all. When I check the hardware list I get the exclamation point on Disk Drives > IMG VP0. It says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". There is no drive letter assigned to the Zip 100 at all, and I never got it to do that. iOmega support said that Windows XP (Home) should not need drivers installed for this Zip drive, but I tried without, then downloading the drivers, and finally the whole iOmegaWare package. Still can't get it to go. Anyone please help me! I don;t know where to go to change the IRQ and the ECP/EPP modes on the NetMos 9805 PCI card. That is the only thing I haven't tried. In the BIOS I can toggle an onboard parallel port on and off and set the IRQ and so on. But I could not find any pins to just hook up the cable interface to it.. This onboard device was set to off anyways. But I tried switching it on too, but nothing happened to get the Zip drive to work.

Is it the PCI card or the Zip drive that is the problem?

Thanks!

Lenny

Hello

I have a question about my Iomega 320GB external HDD. I'm happy with it but I use it on multiple computers (mainly xp withone win7) between home and work with the odd trip at the in-laws. One thing that always seems to bother me is that although I can write to the drive from all the computers they become read only or write protected to that same computer/laptop. As a result I can't seem to remove something I did on another PC, not handy for my uni work as I've multiple folders of the similar files that are tied to the PC they were created on.

Is there a way I can remove this protection and have the drive work with full write access regardless of what PC it was used on (I'm sure some saves were from an old work PC that I can't don't have access to anymore).

Thanks in advance
Gogs
