Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Q: Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.
2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.
3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?
5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.
6. I was thinking updating the BIOS, but I can't, because it wont update while laptop runs on the battery, it requires to be plugged in.
Now I'm stuck. I don't know what else I can do. I'm willing to spend a little bit more money on it to try fixing it.
If anybody had such problem in the past please let me know what have you done and whether it fixed it. Or if anybody have other ideas, I'll be happy and appreciated the help.

Preferred Solution: Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

When I plug the charger in the message on the battery icon on the bottom toolbar reads as "73%, plugged in, not charging". Obviously the laptop is recognising the charger (i.e "plugged in") but it is not allowing the battery to charge.
I have installed every update on the computer and I have recently searched for any outstanding BIOS updates. The system seems to suggest there is a BIOS update to be installed yet when I try to install it the system says that it cannot detect a charger, and won't complete the update, or it won't complete the update without a charger plugged in in the first place. It's a no-win situation. The computer and charger are only 14 months old so this is very unsatisfactory. When I remove the battery the computer operates on AC power only, so again the charger is working, it simply won't charge the battery and therefore once the battery runs down to 0, which it will eventually, I will be limited to using AC power only.
If I restart the laptop with the charger plugged in it diverts me to a warning page saying that the charger is not recognised and I am given the option to go to the BIOS setup, go to diagnostics or to continue. If I choose "continue" it simply returns me to this warning page every time so the only way to power up the laptop is to do so with the AC charger out, and to then plug it in once the system has started so that the battery doesn't drain completely.
Please help.

A:Inspiron 15 5559 charger not charging battery (manufacturers charger being used)

An unrecognized AC adapter will not charge the battery.
First try a new OEM Dell adapter.  If that's also not recognized, replace the DC power jack:
If neither the new adapter nor the DC jack solves the problem, you've got a bad charge circuit - replace the mainboard.

For a Dell Inspiron laptop whose 65w charger has died and has no battery, will a 90w HP charger which fits work?

The Universal Chargers we find at Best Buy here are all 90w too and are guaranteed to work, so not sure why a 90W HP charger wouldn't work - but want to ask first to be sure.

I purchased my laptop from Dell in November of 2007. In September of this year, the AC Adapter/Charger stopped working. (I would plug it in and the green light would not come on - on the adapter/charger). I got a replacement from Dell (after them sending me the wrong replacement twice!) and now it's not working!
Does this sound like a laptop issue or an adapter/charger issue? Dell keeps trying to tell me it's a laptop issue and my warranty expired last week.

Any help or ideas out there?

A:Dell Inspiron 1720 AC Adapter/Charger Problem

Get the PSU tested with a volt meter, if its outputting a voltage then the Mobo is faulty, as Dell failed to send you a replacement within the guarantee period you could argue its their fault and that had they sent you the correct PSU inside the warranty period then you would have know it was a Mobo issue and as such it would still have been covered by warranty, however as they delayed sending the correct part out your warranty expired....

Hey, I've had this laptop for about a year or two now, and on about three separate occasions the laptop has reported that the charger is not recognised. On previous occasions I have had to call Dell and they send me a new charger which works fine for a few months until I get this problem again, and I have to repeat the process.
I guess it is that time again, because the laptop has stopped recognising my charger, and refuses to charge. How can I fix this and stop it from happening? I am sick of having to call Dell multiple times just to get a new charger, only for it to stop working a few months later. How can I fix this issue permanently? I am severely disappointed.

A:Dell Inspiron 5999 charger not recognised problem

Hi buggycobra, Thanks for posting. Apologies that your computer is not working as you expected. In researching this for you, it appears that if the charger plug is inserted and removed multiple times, the internal connection to the motherboard can become defective thus giving a "not recognized" error.  You may need to have the motherboard changed to keep this from happening. Please contact Tech Support in your country to troubleshoot.  Thanks.

Hi! I have 4 years old Lenovo Yoga Ideapad 13.  The problems started couple weeks ago, when the computer wouldn't run or start up without being plugged in. I followed some other people's advice and got a new battery. It seemed to fix to problem for while. Now few weeks after the same problem stands with the new battery. It won't start or run, but when plugged in it says the battery is 100% and charging.   I tried checking if the charger isn't working, but it charges all fine on my other Yoga, which has the same charger model. So please note that this isn't the common problem that is seen here on the forums, that the battery doesnt charge. I'm pretty frustrated, as this problem persists even though I changed the battery. Anyone have ideas? I figured it could have something to do with the battery wire connecting battery to the motherboard, but there doesn't seem to be any defects or loose wires.  However, I tried taking off the battery connection wire when plugged in, and then I get the message "No battery detected" instead of the regular "100% Fully charged". Any help is appreciated.

All, my Inspiron 15 5000 15-5545 is having an error with the battery charger saying that it is not recognized and that the charger will not charge my computer.  I know that this is an official Dell charger (it is the charger that came with the laptop) - so there shouldn't be an identification issue.
I have noticed that there is a pin problem, however.  There are six pins in the laptop charging port (2 for charger identification in the middle and the four other pins that connect to the charger itself at the 3, 6, 9, and 12-o'clock positions).  Whenever I plug in my charger the pin at the 6-o'clock position gets bent upward towards the 2 identification pins.  This may also be bending the identification pins upward, but I am not sure because it looks like they are in the same place, just the 6-o'clock pin is not in the same place.
I believe that this may be the issue, and has this happened to many people before?  Is there a permanent solution to this?  Do I need to replace my charging port?

Hi I just bought a used dell inspiron 3000 I hope this is the right form to post this question. Anyways I bought it and it does not have a AC power charger and it calls for 19v to charge and use.

I have a Universal 12v charger that fits it but it does not have enough power to turn it on but it does turn on the light on the charger. I try to keep it on the charger all night but still no results.

So I was wondering if anyone had any sugestion on what i could buy or use to get it to work (i look at walmart they dont have anything higher than 12v). I also try dell.com and they dont have it anymore and all the websites like ebay and other charge 25 dollars or more. I dont want to sink that much money into it unless i know it will actually work.

So please respond if you have any sugestions. Thanks

Recently I bought a charger for my HP G61-110SA which was just a replacement adapter. Now yesterday it did something weird. Basically, there are two pictures of the two indicators there are to show whether it is charging, one is on the front and one is next to the port on the side. Basicaally the charger wasnt changing the indicator on the side or the one on screen but the one on the front was working when I turned it on. By default the laptop chages brightness when plgged in but now it sort of brightens a bit (not to the full level as should do) and then goes back to normal. Today the laptop is still doing the same but the front light now only turns on for a few seconds before turning off! I dont know whether it is charging. Is this the laptop or the charger. Any help would be useful, I have attatached the side indicator and the front one

UPDATE: I found a website which said you could turn it off and start without battery but with charger and then turn off and use both. However, I turned it off and removed the battery and it wouldnt charge. Then I put the battery in and it started charging-weird. Also the light on the front doesnt last very long so I am stuck. ANY HELP?

I've had this issue for some time it fixed itself long enough for the warranty to expire. The light on the adapter went out so I purchased a new one that kept it charging for several more months. Now it will not charge. It works without the battery in. I also recently replaced the DC power Jack thinking that could be the issue. However I still have the same problem so it must be something else. I am hoping you can help!

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 3520, Windows 8) is about a year and a half old now. Lately it has been having issues recognizing the charger when I plug it in. Sometimes it will show it's charging for a few seconds and then it stops. Often, when I restart or shut down and turn it back on, it will be fine and charge like normal. Other times, nothing is wrong and it charges exactly like it's supposed to. Right now, I've turned it off and on several times and it still won't charge. I don't know if it's the battery, the charger, or something wrong with my laptop.

edit: I left it on with the charger plugged in just in case, and now it seems to be charging intermittently; the light indicating it's charging will stay steady before it blinks and bit and goes back to being steady.

A:Dell Inspiron 3520 won't recognize charger off and on

With the Charger unplugged from the Wall, check to see if the plug is loose where it attaches to the laptop.

The charger port in my Inspiron has become broken over time, due to the charger that was sent with my laptop not working properly, (Where when the charger is plugged in, it comes up with a message saying that it's plugged in, but not charging. During that time as well, the plastic bits inside of the charger port has come out, leaving only the two tiny metal bits that the plastic covered. It still charged my laptop when i got the charger to work. Since a few weeks ago, when the charger completely broke, I left it alone and used a spare laptop. A new charger finally came for my laptop and it does not accept any charger whatsoever. Not even showing the LED that it is charging. My laptop still has warranty, but I don't know whether this would be covered. Can anyone help?

A:Dell Inspiron 15 5567 charger port broken

It'll be deemed abuse/accidental damage - the warranty will not cover the repair.
If you can replace the part yourself, it's this one:
If you can't, a local computer repair shop can replace it - costing about an hour's labor charge.
You're better off with a reputable local shop that charges by time -- not one of the big chains (Staples, Best Buy, or even Dell) that charge a flat rate for the repair.  Flat-rate will almost certainly cost more.

I bought the laptop from a guy I know and the PC is just 3 months old. But from the first day I got it I've been facing problems. I managed to get all the software problems fixed (Firewall detecting viruses where there were none, all my files turning into files of size 888kb, driver problems) but now another problem has come up.
Before yesterday it always seems like I have to press the power button twice before it turns on. Yesterday afternoon I pressed the power button twice and it didn't turn on, then I plugged it in and it turned on, and the battery was full. I removed the charger and it was still working so I don't know why it didn't turn on at first.
Later in the evening as usual I went to this place to use the WiFi there and after downloading some stuff I hibernated it and went back to my dorm room. Only to turn it on and be told that 'my battery is critically low' which shouldn't be so because I was charging it while browsing and the battery was at 100%. So I plugged in the charger and pressed continue, and all of a sudden caps lock and the battery symbol started to blink. The battery symbol was blinking white and off (with orange randomly blinking in between) and the caps lock light was blinking steadily. When I tried to type my password (my laptop password is 'anonymous') the keyboard seemed to be malfunctioning because it typed something like 'a$&@+nonyidjdjdjmous' , like, basically strange characters in between my pa... Hi Need some help, I have an inspiron 5100 that I bought couple of year ago. few month back I noticed that the machine is not charging the battery when the laptop is on. as sson as I shut down and turn off teh laptop, teh charger stats working on the battery. So I don't beleive it is a battery problem but rather a charger one, I'm wondering if someone know if it is a software related and how to fix it.

A:Dell Inspiron 5100 Battery Charger not working

Check very carefully for full contact from the charger points, and the best way to clean them is with a pencil eraser, followed by denatured alcohol and a queue tip. The contacts do become weak or bent, which can cause the problem.
There is no software that affects that model, but there is a chip in the battery that counts the number of full charges. Onces it reaches that magic number, it stops further charging even though good otherwise. This is to prevent fire and other damage as the battery ages.
Otherwise, you need someone with experience using a soldering iron, to replace a couple of doohickies inside the case.

I recently received a Dell Inspiron 6000 and a Dell Studio 1737 laptops from my uncle minus the chargers. A few years ago, both the original chargers died so they bought replacement Rayovac batteries for each laptop and a replacement charger. I guess it worked for a while until the batteries stopped charging. I'm assuming it was due to the charger not being OEM. Right now, I have the laptops running on an HP 19.5 volt 7.4 amp charger with the same polarity but none of the batteries charge and I get the error message on boot about using an unknown charger. So right now, I'm looking at getting an OEM charger to see if I can get the batteries to charge and to return the HP charger to my dad (it's the charger for his work laptop). I found this Dell PA-3E charger but I'm not sure if it will it work. It's the same voltage, amps and polarity but it's not the same model charger that's written on the bottom of the laptop. I'm afraid that the laptop will run but will not charge. Would this charge and work for both the Inspiron and Studio laptops?

So I ran into the old plugged in, not charging problem with my laptop about a month back. I hoped it was the charger, but upon getting a replacement 65-watt charger, the problem persisted. I assumed the fiddly bits on the inside of the laptop had given up the ghost, as I've had that issue before, but when a friend plugged in his 90-watt dell charger it worked like a charm. I'd rather not have to go buy a new 90-watt charger, but I will if I have to.
Also, I suppose I should mention that I'm using a 5759 with no modifications. Also, I used to get an error message every time I plugged in a 65-watt charger though it doesn't show up anymore for whatever reason and I can't remember exactly what it said. Something about it not being recognized or somesuch. Same error message with 3 different 65-watt chargers.

So i have a dell inspiron 15 3521, about a year ago, it started turning on, but wouldn't charge. Then, the battery completely died and it wouldn't turn on. Also, when i plugged the charger in, the light on the charger unit turned on then off. I then proceeded to buy a new battery and charging unit. It turned on perfectly and worked well, but the battery wouldnt charge, and when the battery's charge was all out, it would start up, show the windows loading screen for 30-60 seconds and then mysteriously power off. (Same result with battery+charger in) When i tried turning it on with just the charger in, the front indicator lights would turn on for a few seconds, then turn back off. I tried getting rid of the static built up by pressing the power button down for 30 seconds, but no progress. I know that the outlet is working perfectly, the battery works well, just doesnt have a charge, and has been cleaned. I think the problem is either with the laptop not accepting power (for lack of better words) or the charger not producing enough power. All help is appreciated, and needed... Thank you! :)

Just got the replacement charger for my laptop I ordered a few days ago. As I'm sure everyone reading this knows, on the Dell site, this little item costs about $140. Went to Amazon and paid $30. Plugged in the charger at both ends, powered up the laptop and got a message about it not recognizing it, blah, blah, blah. I selected continue anyway. Obvious point #1 - the laptop is working. Point #2 - hovering over the battery icon in the task tray says "70% available, plugged in, not charging."

So, just curious. The adapter even says Dell on it. I just didn't buy it from them. Knock-off? And of course my main question, is it going to work? Did a forum search before posting and I can see this isn't a unique situation, I'm just wondering what's up? Is this like a nag screen or am I actually going to have problems with this adapter?

Asus u45jc-a1 laptop. My laptop charger cable is in pretty bad shape. You see the wiring broken in the wires on the top part, thus you see the grey wiring inside.

When i charge my laptop recently, the charger would go on and off. Such as charging then not charging. I then took a look and the green light on the laptop charger is green then dims then green again over and over again. So the only way i can fix this issue is unplug the other part of the 2 charger, theres 2 parts then put it back together over and over again then connect it to my laptop. Many times it has same issue. However, few times i would get it to work and thus it would be charging.

However few times it would have same issue where problem arises again. But few times however if i make sure i dont move any part of the laptop charger cable... then it would always be charging which is good and thus working. So i figure it has to be my laptop charger as you see its broken the wiring part and its mainly at the top of the wiring near the place where you plug it into laptop.

Well i then read online that it might be the battery. So I then took out the battery and just connected my charger to my laptop without the battery. Obviously it shows no battery detected... however, the laptop doesn't have an issue with the power going out. Thus it shows green light all the time on the charger.

Does this mean i have to get a new battery as oppose to a charger? First thought was charger is bad since the broke... Read more

I recently replaced both the battery & charger for my Dell Studio 1558 laptop. All was fine at first but on the 3rd day of use there was a popping sound from the charger & it no longer worked. The battery continued to work/discharge as normal. I then went to a local computer shop for a new charger & they loaned me one while they waited for the specific type to arrive.

The borrowed one would power the laptop but not charge the battery. It was a Dell unit & had all the same specs as my original charger except it was 65W whereas the original was 90W. I got the new one today (a Lavolta pa-eud 12) & the battery still won't charge, the battery meter shows "0% discharging". The input & output info on the Lavolta are the same as my original Dell but it doesn't specify wattage.

This isn't too big a deal as the laptop is used at home 99% of the time, my concern is could it possibly damage the computer & has it maybe damaged the battery?

Thanks in advance for any info/advice.

A:Solved: Dell battery/charger problem

They can't have the all the same output specs if the wattage is different. Wattage is the result of amperage multiplied by voltage. So the 90 watt adapter for this unit was 19.5 volts and the amperage was 4.62 amps, a 65 watt unit if still rated for 19.5 volts would only have 3.33 amps or so; so maybe not enough to charge the battery while power the laptop since it under-rated.

Also, Dell's are picky on the power adapters and check for an official Dell power adapter. If you are buying some cheap knock off units they may simply not work correctly.

Get a genuine Dell adapter and hope that none of the knock-offs damaged the laptop or battery, especially that one that failed on you.

Greetings, I have an original 135W, 20V, 6,75A rated charger (ADL135NDC3A) for my Y50-70 and it is working just fine! But since it's extremely bulky and inconventient I tried charging with a more compact and mobile 65W, 20V, 3,25A rated charger (ADLX65NC3A) but it doesn't work!By doesn't work I mean it's not recognized at all, no compaibility/error messages, nothing ... like it's not plugged at all!135W works as it should. Both have identical connector and I measure cca. 20V across both. So it must be some nasty electronics internally that is preventing charging, beacuse physically there are no obstacles for charging, except lower charging rate (power/current), but still, it should be plug & play!Anyone had similar isues? Is there a fix for it?Thanks,-L

The battery wouldnt charge. I bought a new plug and a new battery...twice. I think that the problem is the hole (don't know what else to call it) where the plug goes is broken or fried. That make sense?

Hello everyone, I have a problem regarding my Envy 15 j040el charger. After upgrading at windows 10 my pc doesn't recognize the charger when i plug it in. The only way i can make it work is to insert it when the PC is off and without the battery. I tryed to do a rapid test of the system before turning it on and it gave me this ID ERROR90C3S3-6N98AM-MFGJWK-C0AG03 Please help me!  kind regards,CAITALY

That error message decodes to any of the following components may have failed. AC Adaptor, Battery, Cache Battery Pack, Charger, Power Cord, Power Supply Does the power LED light up when you plug it in? When the notebook is turned off and the power adapter is plugged in, does the battery charge? When you remove the battery, plug in the power adapter and press the power button, does the notebook boot to a login screen?

I purchased the car charger Dell 450-AEGT but did not work with my 7348 laptop. Strange enough, it would be compatible with the 7347 and even with the 7352, which shares the same BIOS of mine, but Dell does not list it as compatible with the Inspiron 7348. Is there any Dell-made car charger compatible with the 7348? I would for third-part acessories but did not find anyone that I could be sure it would work anyway.

A:Car Charger for the Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 (7348)

Just to update post, Dell told me the 450-AEGT would not be compatible with the Inspiron 7348, but according to what I have researched through their own website, this is a wrong information told by Dell staff (The Inspiron 7348 is listed at middle of the compatibility list):

The laptop charges correctly using the power source that came with it. So, what would be the problem with this car charger 450-AEGT?

How do you update the BIOS on an Inspiron N5110 without a charger?  I have downloaded the installer N5110A11.EXE from Dell, and run it from an elevated command prompt using the line
N5110A11.EXE /forceit
but each time I do so a message box appears with the text "Error: unknown command".  Is there a different command syntax that works with this BIOS installer?
I have an Inspiron N5110 that is not charging the battery and will not run off the charger.  I have tried several chargers that work with other Inspirons.  I have replaced the power jack board, and that did not fix the problem.  Reflashing the BIOS seems to be the only remaining approach to take.
Note that the laptop is running Windows 7.

Unfortunately, no BIOS update is going to fix the issue - the charge circuit is faulty.  Replace the mainboard.

The problem still exists even after Dell repaired the laptop. It took two weeks to get the repaired laptop back from Dell.

The problem is:
When I plug or unplug the charger while playing music/video on laptop, the laptop is freezing with buzzing sound for 1-2 seconds when the laptop begins charging. Even after Dell repaired the laptop, the problem still exists.
Tried installing the updated drivers, the laptop works fine only for a short period and then after some time the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.
Also, if the laptop is restarted it works fine for a while and then the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.

Not satisfied with the Dell and Dell repair services.
Need help with this problem.

Please verify BIOS version on the system by typing msinfo32 onto the [Cortana] search box and stroll down to BIOS Version / Date. The latest BIOS version is 1.1.0 ,1.1.0, if there's an old version, I suggest updating to the latest version. Please click on link below to safety install latest BIOS version.

Pruchased 7/2012 - in the past year started getting the - doesnt recognize charger at boot...BIOS notes "Unkown" adapter - would initially charge up to 78%. Recently, until below, it only charges for about 30 seconds then stops. get either plugged in and charging (but isn't) or plugged in NOT charging.
Here is what happened recently and what I have done:
- Factory adapter broke off at the jack last week - laptop suddently shut down and will now only run/boot while plugged in with new DELL 65w OEM charger. Getting the AMber flashes with solid white on battery indicator.
-I have updated to most recent BIOS to A18 - no fix - BIOS and battery settings still show "unknown" adapter and now show.."Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to the operational temperature".
-Battery ceratnly isnt hot as it says this after sitting all night.
Thoughts?  how do I reset the battery - unplug? Replace? Why would an OEM charger still not be recognized - even after BIOS update?
