HP Pavilion running Vista locks up

Q: HP Pavilion running Vista locks up

Hey y'all
I have a problem with my PC. Sometimes when I leave my computer on and leave it idle for a while and then come back to it the whole thing will be locked up. I can move the mouse around but as soon as I click something it will lock up and the time will be locked to the time when it had locked up. The whole thing basically locks up causing the green vista loading mouse circle to replace the pointer. The only way to shut it off is to hold down the power button for about 5seconds. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue? I'm boggled by this.

Specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 quad Q6600 (2.4Ghz)
4Gb Ram
640 GB hard drive
Nvidia 9500GS
Windows Vista Premium 64 bit.

Preferred Solution: HP Pavilion running Vista locks up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi,,,, am i lead to believe that you now think this is not a security issue hence you posted here, (if you do think its a security issue you need to post in the correct forum.) take a look in event viewer for more info related to the crashes,, also post back any info or error codes, also take a look in task manager to see if there are any processes that are using up all the CPU, post those back too, also look in device manager for any yellow triangles and red X's and lastly look in reliability monitor for info,,, click on any red X's in there and post back the info. hopefully its just a dodgy driver. to find all these just type in to search box in start menu.
good luck.

A:HP Pavilion locks up

Hi Again
Well since my last post I have gone to PC Pitstop and ran overdrive 3X and each time on the video test where it goes to 3D it makes it to just past the spinning cubes to the flying text and on the next one it reboots. After booting up I get a message that it has recoverd from a fatal error, I'm still alive so that's good, and the report to Microsoft comes up. check the event log and it shows an error same as I pasted above before the hijack log.

I then tried the Directx tests and all went smooth.

I upgraded to sp3 as I thought maybe the enhanced driver capability might solve it. upgrade went fine tried the tests at pitsop same effect.

So far no more progress.

I reinstalled a clean, legal copy of Windows 10 and upon doing so the system works and at some point the system completely freezes, the only thing that is operational is the mouse. No intereaction what so ever, cannot get to "task manager" or use the windows key, etc. WIll only respond to a hard power shutdown. I upgraded the BIOS to ver F.19, and applied the firmware update for the HDD. This did not resolve the problem. When I booted with a Fedora 24 Live boot all seemed to work OK, no lockups or freezing of the system. Sluggish, but this was due to the fact that it was running off a LiveDVD. I installed Fedora 24 on the hard drive and experience similar issues as when it was running Windows 10. Although it didn't lock the screen and allow me to at least move the mouse/pointer. It just blanked the screen and will not "wake."  It will let me use for a while when it suddenly will blank, and not respond.I did run all Linux/Fedora updates to all the latest packages as well as the latest kernel. I also switched the BIOS between UEFI, and Legacy mode to see if that would resolve the issue. With no better results. I'm believing this may be an issue with the HDD, or a dislplay issue. I'm preferring to run this with Fedora. Any ideas would be appreciated.

About 3 months ago my computer just started randomly locking when I was running 3d games. I wasn't having any problem in the world running 2d games so I was thinking maybe the GPU or video card memory was overheating. So I pulled a fan and heatsink off an old 386 processor I had and fixed it to the GPU and still the same problem.

Since then I've tried using a TNT2 and swapped out or replaced all hardware except for the motherboard and processor. Even tried changing the power supply. All drivers are up to date. I've tried 3 different BIOS revisions. I've tried using at least 5 versions of the Nvidia detonator drivers (I keep them archived in case of problems like this.) It locks up if there's sound being used or sound completely off and if the sound card isn't even in the computer. I'm running DX8.1 and nothing changed, software or hardware, when the problem occurred.

Video card is not overclocked. AGP aperture set in BIOS to 64 meg. I've defragged the HDD recently. Happens with any 3d game no matter how low the settings for the game are set.

Common games being played: CounterStrike, Monkey Island 3, WC3, Ultima Online (3d Client) Q3

System Specs:

Athlon 1.4Ghz
768 meg RAM
GeForce 2 GTS 32meg / TNT2 32meg (TNT2 for testing if it was the vid card)
34.6 Maxtor HDD
Asus A7V133 (not using the onboard RAID at the moment)
Win2k Pro

I do have a Windows XP Home Edition Reinstall disk

Over the last few weeks, my PC has been having fits running slow, locking up, 1 BSOD (KERNEL.STACK_INPAGE_ERROR), stuttering sound, windows getting locked, mouse pausing and freezing, etc. It frequently requires hard boots as it won't respond to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. This happens in safe mode as well.

The CPU usage is often stuck at 100%, even with no applications running. I can't see any pattern to it. It can run fine for a few hours, then suddenly get stutter and lock up.

The only thing has changed recently is that a week or two before this started happening, the CMOS battery was giving error messages on reboots, so I replaced it. I have not been able to see anything wrong in the BIOS settings. Device Manager gives no errors.

I haven't seen any signs of malware, but just in case, I have attached the normal logs. I run ZoneAlarm Free and Microsoft Security Essentials. Virus scans have been negative. I also ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware, but it found nothing other than harmless cookies.

I have cleaned/vacuumed out the system (which I do regularly anyway). I removed and reseated all the cards and memory. I checked that all the fans were working.

I have run CleanUp! (also a normal thing on my routine maintenance). The disk is not fragmented. I removed what programs and autoruns I was sure about.

I ran Chkdsk and it fixed some file ... Read more

A question about missing information, which version of JAVA are you running? You can go to java.com: Java + You and check if you have the latest. Also, what are the applications? Maybe someone else had the same problem.

I've got a problem with my Win XP system. A few days ago after a program conflict and system crash I had to reinstall my DSL utility program/drivers/modem etc...

The installation went well except that something seems to be running now in the background. I can log onto the Web, communicate and run all programs, but there is a regular tone annunciating (sounds like when a USB device connects) a bonging sound which occurs regularly.

Because I thought that there was some sort of conflict I clicked on "Add Hardware Wizard" and got the following message.

"Cannot run two device installations.
You can install only one device at a time, another device installation is underway, when it is finished you can try the Wizard again."

This seems to be the problem....the system apparently is hung up trying to install a device and never can complete that task.

Is there some simple way to stop this process? and in turn turn off the constant tone.

Thank you

Fred Gendler

A:Add Hardware Wizard locks up running in Win XP

Boot to safe mode and see if issue is still present. If the other device is not USB, then it should eventually install.

Also look in device manager and see if there are any bangs (? or !)

Recently IE8 keeps freezing up on my computer. When I go to processes in the task manager, I have multiple instances of "iexplore.exe" running. Most of the instances appear to be trying to connect to "a96-6-188-20.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com". The specific IP Address is:

Is this a virus, malware, etc.? I tried running malwarebytes and that came up empty.

Any thoughts?

My computer, a HP Pavilionzv6000 laptop with Win XP, runs slower that it used to. I don't know how many programs are running that don't need to be running. I may have a virus because every time the AVG program runs, it finds a virus. Sometimes it can't fix the problem so I put it in the vault. I have the Zone Alarm firewall set on High. Also, often the computer just locks up and ai have to disconnect the power cord, and remove the battery to reboot it when no keystroke functions.

Please help!

Try running GMER in safe mode. If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning.

I have miserably slow performance and notice that the cursor flashes upon typing (as if some kind of keystroke capturing is going on). Spybot Search and Destroy seems to be corrupt and malwarebytes hangs (even the clock hangs). I have followed the instructions in the Prep Guide and run ccleaner. I can't run the cd emulation disabler because this is a corp issued laptop, and I don't have the admin password. Here is the DDS Log. I have saved and zipped the attach.txt in case you request it. I notice that it shows Spyware Doc + AV which I thought had become corrupt as well. McAfee VirusScan is installed by my company. Hi all,

As for my problem, title speaks for itself. Has anyone encounter this from the antivirus 2009 family? If so, how/did you get around it? Id like to get the computer in question fixed, as that nasty side effect filters internet search (like this site, for example). Although, that last symptom there is circumventable by using one of the many proxy sites around.

On that system, my progress is:

Managed to install malwarebytes anti-malware, although this was originally hampered by the problem im asking about!

Program when run locks up at 2200k mem usage. (spybot does the same thing)

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi. After upgrading BIOS to 2.12 the CPU frequency is locked to the lowest possible (disregarding BIOS settings). Plugging in the battery makes it work again. For the sake of prolonging my battery life I ususally run without it when safely docked at home.Anyone else experiencing this? I assume it's a bug?

A:Bios upgrade to 2.12 on T460p locks cpu frequency to lowest when running without battery

It sounds like a bug might have been fixed.  I would expect it to slow down if you had just a battery (no A/C) or just A/C (no battery).  The charhing circuity won't "cook" the battery.  It will stop charging when it is fully charged.

Ok got a problem that I think I knwo what is wrong, but I'm not sure. Looking for some confirmation on what I think. Or suggestions on what else if you disagree with my diagnosis.

Computer in question:
1 Ghz Duron
256 of some ddr ram
TNT 2 32 meg vid card

I get a call from this lady and she says her computer locks up while on the internet and then the screen goes blank. When she turns it off and back on nothing happens. If she tries it later it will turn on but when she's on the internet it happens again.
So thats the diagnosis she gave me.

Today after work I stopped by her house and used the computer for a bit. She is running WinXP Pro SP1. I checked her antivirus, it needed updating but the defs weren't real old. I then looked in the event viewer, it was clean, no warnings or anything, only the information messages.

So right now I'm thinking wtf? everything seems ok to me that would cause black screens. So I decide to fire up adaware (because I'm about to head out and thinking I might as well clean up the crap she's gotten from using IE while I'm here).

So while AdAware is dling its thing I decide to go to Windowsupdate.com and get some crap dling before I leave (she's on dialup). As those pages are loading up I decide to check her monitor connection just incase thats loose. As I reach back behind I touched her usb cable going to her printer.

A:Video locks (with artifacts)/Monitor shuts off/System still running. Whats wrong?

One place to look for a shorting against the chassis, would be that thin metal plate that surrounds all the PS2/sound/USB/parallel etc. ports on the pack of the PC. This has some very small 'lips' that fit around each individual port. They could easily make a false contact.

Hello All..
I'm new to the board, so please ignore my apparent lack of hardware/system knowledge.
Computer: HP Media Center PC
OS: Vista x64 Home Premium Edition

As of recent, my Desktop PC just locks up. What I mean by that is after a random number of minutes of inactivity, the screen will be blank and any/all my lights on the keyboard will be off. I have tried pushing down on keys or moving the mouse as if the machine was "asleep", but to no avail. I have to hold the on/off button for the typical 5 seconds to turn off the CPU.

Any forward guidance on troubleshooting or maintenance would be greatly appreciated and please be patient with me..

Now, if you have any questions on classic Mopars/Dodges, I'm your man..

A:Vista just locks up - Help

We will find the cause. Start with a complete antivirus scan
Download and make a fulls scan with malwarebytes.
If both are negative try a clean boot to diagnose.

If none of these options help, try in safe mode. If safe mode still has the problem a good bet would be a hardware problem and we can go from there

I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 to edit photographs under Vista Home Premium for a year or so with great success.

Suddenly yesterday a problem arose. I transferred some .NEF (Nikon camera raw format) to my hard disk, like I always do, then fired up PSE to edit them. As soon as I selected the folder into which the files had been copied, Windows reported that Photoshop Elements "has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

I did everything I know how to do, with the following results:

1) Vista will not open the directory, not even in Explorer, without the same message appearing (Explorer has stopped working....).
2) The command prompt (C:\) sees the files fine. They can be copied in this manner, deleted, etc. No problem. But any attempt to open a folder containing even one .NEF file, even .NEF files which have bee on the hard disk for months and have been opened repeatedly, edited, updated, saved again, etc., etc., produces the same result.
3) The Adobe Photo Downloader can see the files (show thumbnails, etc.) in the camera and copy them into any directory. However, copying any one of them into an existing or newly created folder renders that folder Verboten, and attempts to see into it with Explorer or PSE will produce the error message noted above.

Any Clues?

Vista Home Premium x64 Locks up/Freezes after any wireless connection to the internet is made. The time seemed random at 1st but after some bios/hardware tweaking I can get connected for approx 10 sec before Vista locks up/freezes. It is not like it is becoming "non responsive" - All operations cease - the mouse pointer will not move nor any keyboard command registering (alt+ctrl+del, ctr+shift+backspace, alt+f4, etc.).....nothing. I have to cut the power to restart the computer.

This used to happen while I was playing Assassin's Creed but after adjusting the settings in the bios that has gone to a minimum. I spoke w/ both EVGA and D-Link tech support but they were unable to pinpoint the problem. EVGA suggested that lock ups/freezes are generally caused by the graphics card and/or RAM. I built this rig and all of the most recent drivers/bios versions were used in the installation of the hardware.

This is the only thing hindering me from completing my gaming rig. Vista performance rating 5.7 (due to processor - all other ratings at 5.9)
Can smoothly run Crysis at 1600x1200, No Anti-A, and all other settings on Very High w/ DX10.

A:Vista Locks Up/Freezes

There are a few things that you can try. Do you have problems if you connect directly using an Ethernet cable? Try using another slot for your wireless card. Are your wireless card and router compatible with each other, and are they set up correctly? Refer to the relevant instruction manuals. Generally speaking, for best compatibility you need to use the same manufacturer. Have you installed SP1 yet? There is a driver available, version, which, according to D-Link, is included in SP1.

Recently I did a massive hardware upgrade on my desktop and as part of this decided to move to Vista Business x64 at the same time. However, I am struggling to get it to work reliably. Every time I leave the computer alone for a few hours I come back and find the machine has locked up.

The machine locks up in the following way...

1. The keyboard is unresponsive. Normally the 'numlock' light is still on but if I press 'Caps Lock' the LED does not light up.
2. The mouse LED/detector is no longer on.
3. There is still a signal to the screen but the screen saver image is not moving.

My machine comprises of...
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-8500 1066MHz SLI-Ready DDR2 (OCZ2N1066SR2GK)
Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

I have applied all of the latest drivers from Nvidia, Gigabyte, Microsoft and I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest version.

I have checked the Event Viewer and there doesn't seem to be anything here relevant to this problem. I'm not sure which way to go to try and diagnose this problem. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this, or alternatively any way I can obtain more information to help resolve it.

A:Vista Locks Up When Idle...

My guess would be some type of hardware problem unless you've already achieved stability with some other operating system. Have you tried Vista32 or even XP on the new hardware? Are you overclocking the memory or processor?

Computer has been locking up after in use for 10 - 15 minutes... Actually, it seems to be doing it quicker and quicker. It locks up & is unresponsive to the point that the only thing I can do is unplug the power cord and remove the battery to make it turn off.... This time, it's worse.. Turned it back on and for the last 30 minutes it shows a blank, black screen with the exception of the words Microsoft corporation near the bottom of the screen with a rectangular box above it and inside he box there's the standard little green bars (5-6) moving left to right.. The same image I see briefly each time I start up the computer... I'm considering trying to fix it with a few carefully placed swings of my sons baseball bat... Anyway, I'm hoping to buy a new apple laptop after the first of january but in the meantime I'm basically without a computer. Thank God and Steve Jobs for my iPhone. If anyone has any ideas on what my issue might be &/or how to fix it, you have my undivided eternally grateful attention. Just downloaded this app to my iPhone so just pretend that you're dealing with a computer "dumby" if you respond.
Thanks and merry christmas!!!
