Network status icon has red cross

Q: Network status icon has red cross

I am connected to a network and have internet access.

However, the network status icon has a red cross on it as if i am not connected. Even more strange is if i hover over the icon its read "Network Internet access"

I don't use any third party connection software and don't have any third party firewalls running.

I am plugged in direct to the router with an ethernet cable.

This isn't a massive problem but i'd prefer the icon not to have the red cross on it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi and welcome toTSF If in fact you are connected but you see the "not connected" icon and
status you describe, you may have two wireless configuration utilities
running simultaneously, and you should disable one of them it may have been installed accidentally

This is a problem that started with the last windows update (which included an update for my wireless network adapter which I have since rolled back).

My setup is as follows: I have a dual band router. The 5Ghz band's SSID is (for example) Testg and the2.4 Ghz band's SSID is Testg2.

When I click on the network status icon and hover over the Testg connection, it shows the SSID as Testg2. When I go into the Manage Wireless Networks and open the properties for this connection, it shows the SSID as Testg.

I have fooled around with renaming the connections as all of a sudden one showed up as Test 2 3 with the SSID of Testg

Currently I have three connections listed in manage networks: Testg, Testn, and Test2. Testg and Testn (Testg was previously Test 2 3 renamed Testg) and Testn (previously named Testg renamed to Testn so I could rename Test 2 3) both show the SSID being Testg. The Test2 connection shows the SSID of Testg2.

Looking at this information by left clicking and hovering over the connections on the network status icon, they show as follows: Testg shows an SSID of Test2, Testn shows an SSID of Testg, and Test2 shows an SSID of Testg2.

Why is the SSID different for the same connection depending on where I look at it and is there a fix for this?

Thanks.

bruce

Well, due to other issues (thank you Cnet download for installing all kinds of malware on my computer with the program I was trying to get), I had to use a system restore to get rid of something that took over my computer and it also fixed this issue. I used a restore point from before the Windows update that I installed.

Dear folk

My desktop windows 7 64 bit was working fine til I walked up yesterday and there was a red cross on the network icon!!!

Ethernet cable working fine as when i hooked it to my laptop everything is working fine , means problem lies within the desktop and nothing wrong with cable or router port.

Troubleshoot that I had done so far :

Restarted desktop 3 times, uninstalled LAN driver, connected new Ethernet cable

What else I need to check to find out what is going on ?

Thanks

if you mean an X, then the battery is probably no longer servivceable. You cannot fix a dead battery. How long have you had the notebook? If it is still in warranty, then HP can supply you with a new one without cost under wartranty. Check your warranty status Here. You can still remove the battery and use the notebook with the power adapter. That is a safe thing to do.

Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance

A:Portege M600 - Volume icon has a red cross on it

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly: www.realtek.com

Ive been using W7 since the early builds and am on HP 32bit these days.
In the past if i lost internet connection i would get a red cross on the network icon. This would go away once connection was restored.
This past week or so this cross keeps appearing. Thing is the connection is fine, no problens what so ever.

Anyone else experienced this. Please no "Clean install" replies, thats way to drastic.

Thanks for any help.

A:Nework icon has a red cross on it but connection is fine

It sounds as though it could be a driver issue. On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

As your board is based on the NVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP, you could try to see if these drivers might help (make sure that you create a restore point prior to installing) NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.53 WHQL

Hello @George73,  Before we go to the software part of this red x volume icon we will first have to check if your hardware is operating in the necessary parameters. Move the mouse pointer over the lower right side of the screen for the ?Charms? bar to open.Left click or tap on the ?Settings? feature you have in the charms bar. In the search box you are presented in the ?Settings? feature you need to write ?Device Manager?. After the search is finished you will need to left click or tap on the ?Device Manager? icon. If you are prompted by a window you will need to type in the administrator account and password to go further with the steps below. Double click (left click) on the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature in the device manager window. In the expanded menu in the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature look to see if you have there a sound card and if it is properly installed. Note: if it is not properly installed you will see a yellow sign next to it or you won?t have a sound card present in that menu. If you have a yellow sign next to the sound card you will need to left click on that icon. Left click on the ?Properties? feature after you clicked on the sound card. Left click or tap on the ?General? tab you have in the properties window. You will have a box under the ?Device status? feature and you will see in that box what exactly the issue with... i tried to cleaned them up using my antivirus program (AVG 7.5, free ed)

after that, i tried to do another scanning, and the result shows that it has no viruses anymore,

fyi- before there was 8 file were infected, most of them are from system32

the new problem is, even though i can open all my drives like normal, but the icon of my drive c now has changed into a red cross symbol, as shown in the attachments, "screen"

and when i turn my laptop on, there's a box appears, shown in attachments, "error1"

A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello,

My Dell-VOSTRO laptop is kinda in a weird situation now with spyware, and hopefully someone can help me fix this. It's been bugging me for the past 3 days. The problem is on desktop bottom right corner, where the volume icon and msn icon are, there is always a round red icon with white cross pops up something like this:

"Your computer is infected!

Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

I know this is a spyare spam try to trick you to install their program and not a real windows warning, so I haven't clicked it yet. but I just can't get rid of it. I've tried quite a few things, but nothing works.

There is also a weird thing is that I can't run HijackThis on this laptop, I even renamed it to "Fumble" as someone previous suggested, but it still won't work. Once you double click on the icon, nothing happens. Therefore, I don't really have a HJT log to post. I did follow the steps to run a Panda virus scan and attached the log. Hope it helps in some degrees.

Someone, please help me on this to get rid of that red round icon with the white cross spyware or let me know what need to be disabled to get HiJackThis running to produce a log for you guys.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hello, recently here at work we've been having more and more trouble with the "Could not reconnect all network drives" popup when users log on to their computer. All network drives have a red cross on their icon in explorer. It's a wired network.
I've tried enabling the "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" policy under Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon in the Group Policy Editor, but this didn't help. Updating the driver for the network card also
didn't help.
Once a user clicks on a network drive it instantly becomes available and stays available until the next reboot. The problem is that users have got programs which rely on having connection to certain network folders. So now they first need to open windows
explorer and click on each network folder to get it connect before they can open their program.
I've noticed users getting this error more and more after changing from 3com switches to cisco 2960 switches.
Anyone any ideas? (Switching back to 3com switches isn't an option)

Sincerely,

Peter

A:Red X (cross) over network drive on startup, Could not reconnect all network drives.

Hello, thanks for your help. I seem to have found the problem. The switches are configured for spanning tree, now after changing the port where I'm connected on to use spanning-tree portfast instead of normal spanning-tree the problem disappeared. It
seems the spanning-tree protocol causes a bit of a delay which explains why the network folders don't connect. But it also seems that the GPO
Computer

Doesn't wait for a logical signal because if you read the GPO description I would expect it to wait for a network connection to our domain but it seems it only waits for a signal and not a domain signal, if you know what I mean.

Thanks again for your help.

Windows 7 32-bit won't play sound.

Device Manager\Sound, video and game controllers\High Definition Audio Device ok.
Double click and window says:
High Definition Audio Device Properties\General: Device status says This device is working properly.

Speakers are plugged in and make a crackle when plugging in to correct holes.

Mystery?

A:Sound/Mixer icon has red cross. No Audio Output Device is installed.

If it's shown as "working properly" in the Device Manager, the speaker icon you have can also be because the sound is muted.

You show "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual sound device which suggests you have the generic Windows/Microsoft installed sound driver rather than the actual sound driver from the motherboard vendor. In many cases the generic Windows driver does not work or work correctly.

You can try and uninstall/reinstall by RIGHT clicking on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

If the uninstall/reinstall does not fix it, the next step is to get the correct sound drivers and install them.

With searching I haven't found anything definitive on this. Does anyone know why the "Show icon in notification area when connected" option for VPN (PPTP) connections no longer exists in Vista? Is there a hack to get it back? The Network icon that can be enabled in Notification options is for the LAN connection. Through it you can connect/disconnect the VPN connection, but there's no independent VPN status icon anywhere that I've found.

Not having such an icon is more than an annoyance: you can very easily forget you're connected to the VPN.

its like bridging connections, since effectively with a VPN you are sharing connections with it, the only way i can think of is to enable it when you are using it and disable it when you are not, seems simple enough to me.

I am running Vista Home basic on an E Machine. I had trouble getting my printer to print but SuperFuzz and others fixed that for me. Thanks. Now the printer works except when I try to use the print icon on my home page. If I have something on my home page that I want to print I thought I just clicked on the print icon and it printed. Does not happen. Any suggestions? Thanks Bob

Hello Bob,

Double check to see if the warning box under step 3 in METHOD TWO in the tutorial below may be what is causing this for you.

I can't figure out how to get the printer status icon to appear in my system tray when I print. If I need to delete the job, or drop a job from the que, I have to go via the control panel, and by the time I stop the job, it's already printed.
Can anyone help?

Hello

I have a wireless home network set up but unfortunately the desktop PC I use for most of my CAD work does not have a wireless adapter and it would be more trouble than it is worth to run a wire to my home office. I am wondering if it is possible for me to have my laptop connected to the wireless network and have a second wired network set up in the office through a router and have the laptop feed the connection to the desktop through the second network. I attempted to google the question but couldn't think of a way to word it, or what the setup would even be called.

Anyways, thanks in advanced

Nathan

Edit: fixed some spelling errors

What could it be? font cache? Some windows service that should not be disabled ever that I might have disabled?

It says "network cable unplugged" this is why it says that I guess.

We didn't install anything new, and this "Intel Management and Security" icon (which you can't close) started appearing in the start menu on the bottom of the screen.  What made this start appearing, and how can we get rid of it?

A:Intel Management and Security Status Icon started ...

Its part of the "SOL 4.0" package for Intel AMT. You can in fact close it and make it disappear. Right click, press exit.To make it disappear next time you boot windows, click on the icon,  UNCHECK "Management and Security will be availabe next time i log onto windows". It will be gone then.  I do agree, it is relatively useless for people not using AMT. You can actually disable the entire AMT engine in the Bios (Go to Intel AMT, DISABLE). It does no good if it is not running in a network with provisioning server.

I've installed the IE Tabs extension for Firefox. I have the option to show the icon in the status bar enabled, but there's no icon in the status bar. I had to manually add an icon to the toolbar. Anyone else have this problem or know of a way to fix it? Firefox version is 2.0.0.3.

Hey guys.

I'm having a problem seeing a shared printer over my LAN. It's shared on a box running XP Pro. Sharing is turned on, and the printer has been "shared." Still no luck looking for it from the other PCs in the office. Any advice?

Part two: I've been trying to see the printer from a Mac as well, with no success. I can see the PC workgroup, and the computer sharing the printer, but I can't log in to it. I can log in to the other PCs on the network by entering the "computer name" as the username, and the administrator password. This particular machine, however, won't let me do that. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Alex.

Although you likely have a lot of this working, the basics for troubleshooting are:

1. Make sure you have the same IP scheme (e.g. 192.168.0.x).

2. Make sure you have the same Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS IP addresses.

3. Make sure you can ping the other computer's IP address. If this fails, just for testing, make sure you turn off XP's as well as any other firewall.

4. Make sure you can ping the other computers by name.

5. Make sure you have the same workgroup name (watch for trailing spaces)

6. For troubleshooting purposes, turn off XP's and completely uninstall any other firewall software. You can always add more complexity after you get it working.

7. With XP, make sure you have the same username and password as the person logging onto the other computers. The default setting for XP Pro is to require a password for network access.

There continues to be a lot of misinformation about needing NetBEUI or to changing the NetBIOS setting. You can ignore both. Installing NetBEUI to solve a networking problem will just mask a some underlying and potentially important misc... Read more

I am having a heck of a time trying to get my laptop ( w2000)

Here is the setup:
IBM T22 Laptop windows 2000
See's the neighborhood shares the dsl.

P3 server pc Windows 98se connected to a Lexmark Z53
Printer.

Steps:
Printers are shared, the IBM can see the network printer and is set for it to be the default but when you print nothing happens ..It sits in Que and says printing and then goes away.

Called lexmark and they said they do not support cross platform printing. Not that it could'nt be done but that they do not support nor tell you how to do it.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

My laptop is connected to a router (DLink DSL 524T) via network cable. Although I could still connect to the net through the router there is a cross shown between the Network and Internet in the Networks and Sharing Center.

This isn't a big deal (since I connect to the internet) but I was wondering why the cross is there? Is there a way I could get it off?

P.S. - I've attached a screenshot of the networkd and sharing center in case my explanation was a bit confusing

Can you click on "see full map" on that screen and make a screenshot of it?

Hello!
I am running Windows 7 64bit on a Toshiba laptop.
As you see in the attached photo, the connections information icon shows "wireless connections are available" status even though I am connected! I am connected via hotspot (with a program called Connectify) to another laptop which has wired connection. I have no problems with the connection itself, but only with that status icon's wrong display.

This happend after I installed software for a bluetooth usb adapter. I have searched the web for the same problem and tried the suggested fixes: uninstalled the software, uninstalled the network adapters (wired and wireless), deleted iconchache.db file but none worked for me.
This problem is really driving me nuts so I would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix it!

Thanks!
