Need compatible upgrade suggestions.

Q: Need compatible upgrade suggestions.

Hey guys, this forum was a crucial part in building my rig a year and a half ago, and I'm going to call on this community once again because its almost time to upgrade my system.
I'm looking to upgrade to 4GB RAM, possibly a hard drive, and in the future I'll need a new processor and video card.

RAM: I have 2 1GB modules right now, and I was wondering whether I should buy 2 more 1GB modules, so all 4 slots on my mother board are filled, or whether I should get 2 2GB modules of a "better" RAM,as in better RAM. DDR2 800 is preferable, but I'm not sure if there has been "better" RAM that has come out that my mother board supports

HD: I'm looking to get a 10,000rpm raptor in the near future. Any recommendations on a nice little hard drive that totes the speed for a fair price?

CPU: With DX10 games coming out in the near future, I'm going to be looking at getting a better CPU before I head off to college. I'm currently running my 2.4 dual core cpu, and I know my 775 motherboard can take on a quad core. I know way off in the future I'll need a new motherboard, but before I head off, I want to get the best possible processor my motherboard can handle for a decent price. Any suggestions on a good quad core (can my mobo use extreme quads?)

Video Card: My system so far has been a breeze to use and build, even though its been running vista as its OS. ALL of my problems so far have come from my video card. Several times it stopped displaying picture, displaying random colors flashing on all the pixels, and wouldn't work again until I took out the video card and reseated it. I'm done with ATI. I'm looking for a good nvidia video card that will work with my mobo (should be any right? can my PCI express slots support PCI express 2.0). Any sweet spots for power/price guys? Once again, I'll be making these upgrades towards the end of summer.

Thanks guys, your help is invaluable...

Preferred Solution: Need compatible upgrade suggestions.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In spite of the fact that it's just asking to be confused, I would wait for a few more opinions on the motherboard.

Win 7 64 bit pro is about the best choice for an OS you could make at the moment.

The WD Caviar blue, I'd rather see you grab the same drive in a Caviar Black. (Once you've had a Caviar Black, you'll never go back). What does that even mean.......

I'm looking to replace the logic board in my desktop system with a PCI Express-capable model. The current logic board is an Asus P4C800-E with a 3.4 ghz P4 CPU.

What I would like is:
1 16x PCI Express slot (two would be better)
at least 4 other PCI slots
USB 2.0
FireWire
Onboard gigabit Ethernet
Has to play well with the current processor

My upper limit is around $250 for the board. Suggestions?

A:PCI Express Intel-Compatible Motherboard Suggestions?

A socket 478 p4 board with pci-e is not too common.
I also doubt you'll find one with 4 pci slots as well(although they have some pci-e x1 slots too).
Here're two I could find w/ pci-e and socket 478.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157075
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813170143
After looking at both, I'd definitely go with the albatron model of the two, it has 1 more pci slot, and also has full pci express x16(not the asrocks "agi express", which is limited).
The downside to the albatron is that it only has 1 ide port, so you could only have 1 ide hd if you have one cd/dvd drive, or no ide drives if you have 2 cd/dvd drives. It basically means you need to use sata hard drives with the board, (or you'd have to get a pci/pci-e x1 ide controller to add 2 more ide connectors).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815150049
^that has 2 ide connectors if you'd need more ide connectors. It also adds usb and firewire.

If you need firewire you can add a card like this(or if you need ide ports and get the above, firewire is already built in).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E1681512400
Or if you don't want to tie up a pci slot, you could get a pci-e x1 model like this.
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.a...rm=10412677&Type=PI&Category=Comp&dcaid=17194

And if you need gigabit ethernet, same situation, you can get pci or pci-e x1.

This would be a good build and play your games just fine and there is room to work with these parts.

CPU- AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Motherboard- ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X
RAM- G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600
Video Card- HIS H687F1G2M Radeon HD 6870 1GB
Case- COOLER MASTER Storm Scout because you will need a better ventilated case.
PSU- OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ700MXSP 700W this will leave you room for upgrades but others may suggest other alternatives.

This is a good setup for a basic gaming computer IMO there could be variations like maybe a 6850 rather than the 6870 or maybe a different cpu but overall its a good build all for $730 now thats nice IMO

I'm looking to upgrade my cpu in the next few weeks/month. My A64 X2 4000 is feeling a little sluggish these days.

I do a lot of gaming, photo editing (Adobe CS3), 2D and 3D Autocad 2008, might do some 3DS Max rendering in the future.

I currently have an Athlon 64 X2 4000 Brisbane at 2.5 Ghz, 2 gigs of solid patriot ddr2 800 4,4,4,12, an X1950XT 256mb.

I've been toying with quad vs dual core (q6600 vs e6750) or waiting for Penryn to be back in stock, which is supposed to be soon right? Does anyone know when Intel is supposed to be shipping more units? All I could find is they will be available Jan 08, which they were, but not anymore.

I've been feeling slowdowns mostly in Crysis of course, but also when working with large image files in Photoshop, and complicated solids in Autocad.

I've been kind of overwhelmed by all the choices out there so any suggestions are appreciated, and if anyone feels I would benifit more from upgrading different components let me know.

I have a budget of about $500 and I don't intend to run the cpu I get at stock speeds, at least not after the first few months. Any help is appreciated, Thank You.

A:CPU Upgrade Need Suggestions

The Penryn is an intermediate stepping stone to newer CPUs in the year or so ahead. I'd say keep saving the $500 until the right time, or you'll still be behind the 8 ball in technology.

I only have a 3400+ AMD 64. I could run a dual core in my 939 socket, but I am not sure about investing heavily into that. Quad cores are the best current option, of course. I may get a dual core on a budget if one comes along

I got lots... but a whole lot of questions too.

What are you doing that requires a better gpu?

How much room is in your case? You have a pre-built system, and as such limits your choices.

I'd recommend a Antec or a Corsair, seasonic, silverstone, all at or Around 550 to 650W tops.
A modular style will give you more room in the case.

A:Looking to upgrade my rig, any suggestions?

Your CPU is more likely to be holding you back since you aren't using a widescreen monitor or anything. The 8600GT is fine for running STALKER at lower resolution and higher texture settings for example. You have a P5K motherboard so I might look into swapping that Pentium for a Duo. I'm pretty sure you could use an E8400 which would give you a significant boost. They are cheap enough too so it wouldn't be a costly upgrade and you can do it yourself. Since you're using XP, 2GB is enough for now, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I just want to point out though that STALKER likes a lot of vRAM, so the higher the resolution the more vRAM you will need to keep the game running smoothly at high settings.

As for the monitor you'd want something with a really good contrast ratio, like 20000:1 or something.

I am in the mood to do a couple of upgrades on my desktop computer and I need some suggestions. The computer I have is a house brand that I bought from a local computer shop and it appears to be pretty much set but I am thinking that I can tweak a few things and get a little better performance out of it and hopefully not break the bank while doing it.

I have only had my computer a year and I am not yet ready to get rid of it for a new one so I want to work with what I have and try and make it better.

The processor is a single core cpu and I know I can upgrade that to a 4500+ but I have a strong feeling it would only be an incremental improvement (if any) and I would rather spend my money where I will see a more noticeable improvement. If anyone feels I am wrng on this thinking please say so.

The first thing I would like to upgrade is my graphics board. As you can see from my configuration below the graphics in my computer are pretty good but maybe they can be better. I have an available PCI-Express slot for a new board but I am not sure sure if I would see much if any difference from it.

The second thing I want to upgrade is my audio. I have the AC-97 5.1 onboard sound and I listened to a lot of high rate ripped music on my computer so I am thinking if I put in a dedicated sound board I can increase my listening pleasure.

I was planning on upgrading my PC to bring it closer in line with the requirements with games such as GTA IV and Bad Company 2. I want to get started ASAP but I wanted to know if anyone can lend some suggestions as to what would be a good start.

My PC used to be a speed demon back in the day when it was running dual 7950gt 512mb VRAM 550mhz SLi along with a 2.6 dual core 2 gigs of RAM and one sweet wi-fi "gaming?" mobo one of those Fatal1ty rip offs.

All of that has been tossed out in order to keep up with the times, now another upgrade is in order. The old mobo is swapped for a ASRock with triple SLi capability, the old GPUs have gone the way of the dinosaur in favor of a very sleek 9800gt 1gb VRAM clocked at 700mhz, and the cpu has had a slight upgrade from a 2.6 dual core 64 athlon to a 3.0 64 but the system memory is still at 2 gigs

I have the option of upgrading the CPU to a decent quad core since my mobo is a AM2+ socket that if I remember correctly supports phenom etc (have to dig around for the mobo manual) or adding another 9800gt for added performance or even just adding more system memory, right now I'm leaning towards upgrading the CPU since I think a quad core will go a bit further with some of the more demanding games like GTA etc.

No real budget atm but I'm not gona go overkill either just anything sensible.

Opinions on which direction I should go are much appreciated.

A:Upgrade suggestions

Well, GPUs are usually the most important component when considering most games. A second 9800GT should give you a considerable performance boost (on games where SLI scales well). A memory upgrade to 4GB would be in order if you intend to use a 64Bit OS.

What is the exact CPU you currently have? In case you decide on upgrading to a quad, the AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE would be a great choice.

Gosh, you might want to try keeping your questions to one thread, and being succinct and clear about what your question is. I've just come across three threads with varying levels of clarity on what your actual question is. Are you looking to upgrade these current components? Have you already upgraded something and it isn't working as expected?

The specs you have listed will struggle with many modern games. You are looking at more than just a video card upgrade, I would imagine, but again, I'm not sure what you are asking exactly.

Hey guys,

I'm planning on upgrading my motherboard this christmas. I need to upgrade my RAM but due a faulty motherboard, I thought I'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Can anyone suggest a decent, reliable motherboard, whilst staying within a fairly modest budget? I'd like something that can support at least 4GB RAM (but if it can take more then great!)

I'm also looking to get a second internal HDD (1TB - SATA) - can anyone recommend a reliable model? Again, if it saves on the pennies, fantastic! But obviously I'd prefer reliability over price.

I only ask because I'm easily confused about all the specs/requirements etc. and know I'll end up picking the wrong hardware

My current CPU is a Pentium D. I don't mind buying a bundle with a new processor for convenience sakes, but equally if I can save some cash and keep my current cpu thats fine too.

Also for your own notes: I have a Coolmaster CM690 chassis, an nVidia GeForce 9500GT GPX, and a 450W Corsair PSU.

Any suggestions are welcome! Cheers all!

Hello, and thanks in advance for your suggestions:

I am an avid gamer who has been unable to game for awhile and I'm now back and considering an upgrade to be able to play the latest and greatest coming out.

Here is what I'm running currently:

XP1900+
40GB 7200
512mb PC2700
ATI 9600XT
SB Audigy
MSI KT4 Ultra Mobo

I am wondering whether a full upgrade (CPU/Mobo/DDR400ram) keeping existing videocard would be better than....

ATI9800PRO and keeping everything else the same.

My Mobo can (via bios flash) handle upto Barton 2500,

I was thinking a Barton 2800+, ASUS A7N8X-Delux or DFI Lan Party II w/512 of PC3200 in Dual Channel might be a nice setup for the next 18-24months.

Any ideas on the best approach?

Thanks!

So I have a EVGA GTX 460 SC EE 1GB...

Wondering should I just buy a 2nd GTX 460 and SLI since I already have one (Since the 2nd card would cost only $175 or so) or should I just invest into a better single card.

Also I know that PCI Express 3.0 is coming and the Next Gen Nvidia cards in the near future... So I don't really want to shell out for the GTX 580 and have it become "obsolete" like my GTX 295 did.

My thought is... get another GTX460 (To make SLI) and hold out for the next gen Nvidia Cards... But with battlefield 3 coming in a couple of weeks I am scared I won't be able to run High/Ultra settings without the 2nd card (I know that total ultra requires uber hardware but I can make "hybrid" settings).

So what do you think? Is the SLI going to provide enough boost or should I just invest in the GTX580 knowing that it's replacement is looming...

A:Have a GTX 460 1GB... upgrade suggestions... (SLI or ?)

either way you would have around the same performance but the gtx 580 will still be viable as a gaming card for a while it can max any game at 1920x1080 which i presume you are playing at. IMO just save your money and buy a new card when they come out. I am playing BF3 with a gtx 470 OC beyond 480 speeds and my brother plays with a gtx 280 and has not had any problems.

Hello to all I'm currently using WD Caviar Black 500GB (WD5002AALX) and thinking to upgrade to 1TB coz i need more space + similar performance. I've been using Western Digital HDD's from some years. I saw this Seagate Barracude 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB and i'm interested in it due to it's Size + Price but i'm not sure about the performance and noise levels of this drive. My WD 500GB is pretty much quiet and my main concern is Gaming + OS on the same drive and i also like to keep just one drive in the system at a time and i do backup my data on the disc's so kindly give me suggestions on this drive and upgrade.

A:Want to Upgrade HDD... Suggestions Please!

I've shied away from Seagate for the last several years.

I'd go either with a WD 1 TB Caviar Black or this one from Samsung:

Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
It is really a bargain at 59.99 and is occasionally on sale for 49.99.

Very fast and quiet.

Don't know much about gaming but your processor is an underperformer for a P5K. An E 8400 Core2Duo should work well on that board and I would upgrade your graphics card as well. Then you need to check if your PSU is big enough.

Hey all.

Planning an upgrade and was after some advice/recommendation.

Budget 500 but able to stretch if worth it.

Current rig - Q6600, 8GB, Asus P5B-E Plus, 7300le (looking to replace - CPU, RAM, MB, GPU)

Mostly used for audio recording, sample playback, virtual studio type stuff but all round use too.
Would like a bit more beef in the GPU department for occasional 3D blasting and HD movies etc.

Intel I7, Phenom X6 or AMD FX???

I'm a bit behind on the current breed so uncertain what the general thoughts on these are.

Thanks in advance for your time and patience.

Okay, here's the deal. I'm currently using a 17" CRT monitor with a max res of 1280x1024. I'm looking at replacing this with an LCD monitor (the primary purpose of which will be gaming). Now, a couple of years ago, I received an LCD monitor for Christmas, but I switched it with the CRT my fiancee was using due to poor pixel response time on that monitor. Unfortunately, I'm lost in a sea of options, so I have some questions:

1.) DVI or VGA? (I've heard arguments that DVI is better and arguments that say you can't tell any real difference)

2.) Widescreen? (I've never used one and don't have any way to sample one where I live (po-dunk town) This question is more directed at the gaming crowd (like it, love it, meh?))

3.) Native resolution? (Again, more for gamers. Is a 1280 variation what most people use? Are higher resolutions worth the performance hit in your experience?, etc.)

4.) Pixel response time? (I've heard a lot of ones to stay below...is it 15ms? 10ms? other?)
I might think of some more, but I'm basically trying to narrow down the necessary features by hearing what others have experienced.

Thanks.

A:Monitor Upgrade Suggestions

Around 2000:1 contrast ratio is good, 300 cd/m*m brightness, DVI vs VGA: I really don't notice any difference. Still, it's better to go DVI. Widescreen: I didn't like the idea, having always used a 5:4(1280x1024) or 4:3 screen and the times I had used a widescreen monitor for anything else than Wording, I didn't like it... I went for a Samsung 204B, old model, got it cheap as used, 20", 800:1, 300 cd/m*m, 5 ms 1600x1200 resolution. I loved it. Response time should be 5 ms max for gaming, and it shouldn't be GTG(gray to gray, a less demanding change, giving false "speed" to advertize). Native res... I really think it's better to use 1600x1200 with quite minimal AA and AF and shadows rather than 1280x1024 with better eye-candy settings. But I think that's about personal preferrance. With your card, could be better to get a 1280x1024 or 1440x900(/1680x1050) monitor.
Asus and Acer seem to make nice low-budget monitors. Which country you live in? Anyway to use web store like newegg.com or Scan.co.uk?

Hello,

I am using 2gb of memory (2x Patriot 1gb PC2 6400). I wish to upgrade to improve performance in video/3D applications, and videogames

Under Vista 64bit, I believe the time has come in which 4gb of RAM has a significant performance improvement over 2gb - Alt+Tabbing out of games, and handling multiple applications at the same time was far smoother when I added a friends PC2 5400 (2x 1gb) memory to my system.

Using the same brand of memory (and speed) will provide even better results though. But from there, I don't know what option to take;

Adding another two 1gb modules to my system (Patriot PC2 6400)
Finding a pair of 2gb modules
Use faster memory? (currently 800mhz)
Using a single 4gb module

From what I understand my motherboard (EP45-DS3R) supports up to 8gb of "DDR2 1200" memory

Thank you in advance for suggestions folks...

A:Suggestions for memory upgrade

get 2x2GB sticks at 1200. Probably your best bet, still leaving room for two dimms.

timings on ram usually dont yield a huge different, to the naked eye anyway. sticks with 4-4-4-12 or 5-5-5-15 settings should do you fine.

I am going to be passing on most of the external hardware from my current setup. The only thing I may be buying extra is another hdd(one of mine died) and maybe a new dvd/rw drive even though my current one works fine. I really want this case, even if its a little expensive(I am really hoping that with this case over heating won't be an issue for the video card). Everything is compatible but I am open to suggestions. My budget range is pretty much what i have here for these parts. (around 1200-1300)

A:New build upgrade. Suggestions?

My desktop is almost completely identical to your build and I can say that it works great with all my games/programs thus far.

The only differences are that I have the Cooler Master HAF 932 Case, Corsair Vengance RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 6870.

The only thing I'd suggest/question is a different CPU. I'm curious as to why you didn't pick a Sandy Bridge CPU, or at least why the i7 950.

Personally, if I could go back and rebuild my computer I'd have definitely changed the CPU to something else (didn't know too much back then + Sandy Bridge weren't out yet, and I wasn't willing to wait XD). Considering the i7 950 doesn't use the Turbo Boost as well as say the i7-875k, nor does it tend to be a favourite for gaming. Although that depends... what are you using the computer for?

Just a thought, hope any of my comments help!

My budget is about 350$.

I'm looking forward to hear your suggestions.

Hello! It's about that time when I gut my machine and swap out some tasty new ingredients. I've picked out some of the new parts, but I'm still deciding on the CPU and mobo. So, here are my questions:

1) Which CPU should I pick?
2) What motherboard might you suggest?
3) Is there anything wrong with my best-laid plans? Should I replace the old Ballistix with another set of Ballistix Tracers, or would those two play nicely enough together?

In terms of my needs, this is mainly a gaming and multimedia machine. I'd like to be able to run the newest games on DX10 (e.g. Crysis). I also do a fair bit of multimedia work in terms of both design (e.g. Photoshop) and video encoding (e.g. DVD9 --> DVD5 encoding). Gaming and encoding are my top priorities. I am definitely a midrange consumer with a penchant for good deals and no need for hair-singeing performance.

Just looking for suggestions on how to upgrade my computer from here in order to get more out of it (let's use CounterStrike Source FPS as a benchmark for "getting more out of it").

A:Suggestions...? (Computer upgrade)

CounterStrike is pretty old, it should run just fine on that system.

You have enough RAM and more won't help a 32 bit operating system, your video card is decent and probably on par with what the CPU can handle.

Your CPU is the weak part, but depending on the model of it and what the motherboard can handle it might be near the max of what you can have. You'd need to post the exact model of the Dell system you have.

It'll probably run better with XP the 7 though.

In honesty, you may want to save up for a newer dual core or better system as the one you have you can't do much with.

Maybe it doesn't improve FPS very much but you should grab an SSD drive for OS, programs and games. I think it's recommended for highest of high settings for BF3 to have 2GB of memory on the graphics card, not sure.

However the downside to it is that it does not have a SSD.

Every year I try to upgrade a MB component, this year I am thinking about a new GPU, I do not do a lot of gaming and would like a card that is relatively quite.

Current specs:

Motherboard - Asus P6T
Power Supply - PC Power and Cooling @ 610 watts
GPU - EVGA GTX 260
OS - Win. 7 Home Prem. 64 bit
PCI - 2.0 x 16
Monitor - ViewSonic 2365 @ 1920 x 1080, DVI

I am aware that with Win. 7 the best Direct X I can get will be #11 and that the new GPU will be PCI 3 and have to run in the "backward" compatible mode to accommodate the PCI 2.0 slot.

The GTX 260 is 10.5 inches long and the cooling fans are getting very loud.

My price range would be $200.00 - $300.00

I would like to stay with a NVIDIA GPU.

I have been looking and there is much to choose from so I am asking for some suggestion from this forum -

Thanks
Joe

Looking to upgrade my toshiba equium L300-146.
Atm its pretty crap and have decided on going for a couple more GB of RAM.
Also looking to upgrade the CPU and have been looking at the intel core 2 duo processors for a while now.
For some reason their mobile core 2's seem to be less powerful and more expensive than the desktop models.
Could anyone suggest a good CPU from this range and perhaps explain why the mobile processors are more expensive??

many thanks
Alex

A:I want to upgrade my system! SUGGESTIONS?

Most importantly, how much are you planning to spend on the upgrade?

Do you plan to build a new system or are there parts you will be using from your current one?

Right guys, I'm new here, how are you all doing..

I'm looking to upgrade my Desktop computer, it's seriously old. I've just been adding parts over time to keep it running well but now I'm considering a very serious upgrade.
I want to increase my processor's clock speed really, but any help in my computer's speed would help. Oh, it's probably best to explain what I use my computer for.. Playing games & recording guitar/vocals (through an audio interface) then editing with software. Ps. I'm a student, and i'm on a tight budget! ;D

Here is a dxdiag run down of my computer, I don't know what you people like to use, but i used dxdiag.. i'm an amateur.

(Processor in bold, and also running 32-bit windows with 4gb RAM.)

Can you say approximately what's your budget? Also you will need to use 64bit windows so that your windows could recognize 4gigs of ram. As you can see it only recognizes 3.3gigs of ram. Download piriform speccy and post all your hardware here again please.

Hello everyone, and hope you all are doing well. I am not sure if a thread or post like this was already made, but I am just seeing what you all might recommend as far as getting the best network equipment or setup that you all have found to work without having to upgrade to expensive fiber optics which I don't think will work since we use Cable Internet here. Sorry, but this is going to be a long post to explain the situation. And this may lead into other topics or discussions, which I would rather see discussions about anything related to this, than no replies, comments, or suggestions at all.

I guess this topic would be more towards people who use Cable Internet and maybe what they have found to be a "better" setup as far as getting the most out of the speed that is given by using Cable Internet if that makes sense and/or for anyone who has tested different pieces of equipment and have gotten better results i.e a certain brand or type of NIC card that works better with a certain Router, etc.... Sorry if any of this sounds jibberish, but I am no expert at networking, but I do know enough to upgrade the components involved. I will tell you what I have recently bought to upgrade our home network here to gigabit if that is even possible here in the USA. I heard from a few places that USA is "behind the times" on gigabit technology or the speed of internet in general I suppose, but what I am trying to do is get the most out of it if can and if you all...
