Strange Issue with Printer and Windows 7

Q: Strange Issue with Printer and Windows 7

I have a weird one that I am hoping someone can assist with,

Background Info ? 4 PCs and 3 Printers in office all Windows 7 ? One PC acts as Print Server and shares the TWO of the Three printers using Windows Homegroup. Third Printer is direct connected via USB to Bosses PC.

Problem ? On Bosses PC only ? All Shared Printers will just go offline. It is not a network issue or homegroup issue as she (the boss) can see other homegroup resources such as shared drive and Shared folders. It appears to happen after she prints to her USB printer then tries to go to a shared printer. (This is my guess, Not tested and verified).

Other Info ? No one else in office has this issue, Boss will not give up her USB printer(it is old but reliable for her), A restart of her machine sometimes fixes the problem but not always.

I am truly at a loss any help or work around would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In an office environment, I would do away with printer sharing and simply place all of the printers on the network. Then you don't have to deal with Windows glitches and conflicts.

Hi everyone

Just wondered if you could help me out with a strange printer problem i seem to be having. I have just setup my parents new machine so i have set myself up with the normal admin account. I installed there lexmark printer and i can print from word and print emails out and web pages no problem. I have set both my parents up with a standard account each and they to can print documents from work no problem by selecting the lexmark printer from the drop down menu but for some reason they cant print web pages or web based emails. When you try to print all that is avaliable is the XPS document printer thing, any ideas why they cant print from the web to this printer?

Hope you can help

Many thanks

A:Strange printer issue can you help me out?

You don't say what printer it is, other than just Lexmark but if when you go to File then Print in any program if the printer software is properly installed it should show up in the drop down menu. Have you got it set as the default printer. Go to Control panel, Devices and printers, right click on the printer concerned and select "Set as default printer"

yesterday when i try to print two pdf documents, the printer queue showed "printing" for 5-10 sec and then queue status changed from printing to deleting for the first job. neither it would print nor it would let me delete the file from print que, even after several system restart.

after doing driver reinstall it showed the original print jobs and then again win7 will try to delete the first print job, without me doing anything. the problem disappeared in the morning.

I am assuming it is a networked printer. Did the file clear after the printer was restarted?

I have an older Lexmark X1150 all in one printer that I don't want to part with, but all of a sudden it's having a feed problem that I've never seen before. I'm pretty anal about keeping the rollers clean, etc., and it's always run very well for me, but now right at the end of a page being printed it just stops, beeps, and the power button flashes. I've cleaned it out so am sure there's no paper or other object in there, cleaned all the rollers and used compressed air to make sure it's as clean as possible, but it it still happening. Anyone seen this before, by any chance? Thanks

So at my home we regularly have internet connection problems , meaning it goes in and out 10-20 times a day , so we bought new modems , new wireless routers , which in the end we still have the same problem. So I decided to do a lil investigating , I decided to run wire shark to a detailed view on my connection , and I keep seeing this Lexmark printer show up & I was stumped b/c it just didn't make sense that a printer would continually try to connect to my wpa2-psk secured network , wireless at that , so , a few weeks go by and I decide to turn on file & printer sharing on one of my laptops & wam there is that Lexmark printer on my network ....how could this printer be on my network? I don't know whether this should be in the Windows XP forum, but I thought I'd try it here first.

I'm working with a Compaq Presario 6300, and trying to set-up a high-speed internet connection on it.

When I'm installing the software, it checks several components of this system to ensure that they meet the minimum requirements.

Anyways, it always halts when checking the RAM, and says that the computer doesn't have 128 MB of RAM installed (so installation aborts).

When you right-click on the My Computer icon and go into the System Properties window, it reads (under the General tab) as only having 120 MB of RAM.

However, when I look in the BIOS before Windows loads, it shows the system as having 128 MB. Also, when I'm in Windows, and I go to the System Information utility in Start > Programs > Accessories >System Tools, it shows as having 128 MB as well.

So the only place that it seems to have a problem reading the RAM is in the System Properties window.

As noted above, the system is running Windows XP. Also, I've tried re-seating the RAM a couple of times (didn't fix it).

I've searched all over the internet, and can't find anything (not even on Compaq's site).

A:Strange RAM issue with Windows XP

The system likely has onboard video which is "sharing" some of the RAM, that is the "missing" RAM, you would need to install more memory.

I just replaced the HD in my laptop with an SSD and did a clean install of Windows 8.1. I have a very strange issue now. When I first try to run a program the icons disappear from the desktop for a second then reappear but the program doesn't run. The second time a do this the program starts right away. This happens with every program and Windows feature. If I double click on Control Panel it doesn't run the first time but starts immediately the second time I double click it...

Has anyone even heard of suck a strange thing?

A:Strange issue with Windows 8.1 and SSD

That would not be an SSD issue. That is Windows 8 & the Video driver causing that. Look in Administrative Tools > Events, and see if any problems are showing up. Also depending on the chipset manufacturer for the Graphics chipset for your computer. Download the driver directly from the mfg of the chipset website, vs. using the drivers that Windows 8.1 loaded.

After having setup successfully Win 7 Pro some years ago printing worked fine for several pdf printers
and connected USB laser printers.

Then, recently, I must have changed something accidentially in System.

When I now want to print (e.g. a Word doc or web page from Firefox) it doesn't work anymore.

EVERY printer does not work!

Further investigations revealed that the printer ports are vanished in printer Proprties dialogs.
Its completely empty!

Have a look at the attached snapshot.

I don't know which event or action caused the printer port deletion.
Maybe a new Win Patch or an uninstallation of driver or a registry key adding.

However re-installation of printer drivers does not help since the required underlying ports are gone.

How can I re-install them again?

Is there a manual Registry add script?

My stepmother is having a problem with her work computer. Upon booting up into Windows XP, if the user takes too long to log into the account, upon entering the password the login will show "Loading personal settings..." or something to that effect and will freeze/lock up at that screen. However, if you're relatively quick and don't dawdle in logging in, then you can access the account. All of the startup programs load, initialize, etc. and everything seems fine and dandy. After a little while, though, the computer locks up. It's strange though, because you can still move around windows and alt + tab to switch between them but you cannot click anything to access it. If you hit "Windows Key + L" to logout, the screen clears and all you see is the users background. After that, you cannot select the user in order to log in so you're stuck. That's as far as I have gotten.

My only other leads are that the computer uses QuickBooks for the business and when I checked the system processes & performance statistics, nothing seemed out of the ordinary aside from there being several QuickBooks-related programs running in the background. Oh, also, upon opening the Event Viewer after the computer had frozen a few times, I discovered that there had been three QuickBooks errors just before each freeze. This is what led me to investigate QuickBooks processes in the first place. Any and all assistance in resolving this issue would be gr... Read more

Patch Tuesday this week rolled out lots of critical updates. Since then, we've had a handful of users here experience a strange issue that's starting to drive me crazy.

Users are reporting that they can no longer print. The dialog box freezes up regardless of the application being used. Outlook, Adobe Reader, Nuance PDF, & Notepad have all been tested to freeze up. All of the printers here are network printers. At the same time, computers lose ALL internal network access (makes sense why they can't print), but the shares DO respond fine to pings. Google and all other non-internal sites work fine.

So, a majority of the users who get this issue try to reboot. Computer gets stuck on Shutting down... forcing a manual restart. Logging back in will allow printing and internal network access again, but only for a short time. Users do not have local admin rights. A couple times, the computer would freeze booting up leaving the user with just a black screen and a movable cursor.

If I try to login to that computer as an admin, I get a "Service Pack 1 is now installed" message. The strange part is, most of these computers (with the exception of 1) have all had Service Pack 1 installed a LONG time ago. There have been multiple Windows updates since then with no issues. Even after logging in as an admin though, I lose internal network access after a short period of time. There are no other Windows updates pending, and the only ones that have rece... Read more

Hello there
I have this problem on windows 7 where my computer will freeze randomly, and if audios playing it will just go crazy! It never seems to do this when i was playing a game , but mainly when i was on Youtube or something simlar.
Now i have a problem ALSO with installing windows xp , as it freezes on 34 minutes of the install , when it says "installing devices". Apparently this is due to a hardware problem.

But the strange part is i am using Ubuntu at the moment , and there are NO problems , with freezing or anything!

Just wondering if there is anyway i can find out the problem! Does Windows use something Ubuntu doesn't?

I've got 2 computers, both on Win XP SP2, both have the same user/password combination and are connected on a switch. File system is NTFS.

My problem concerns the sharing of folder in Windows. For some reason occasional folders do not show up.

I.e. I share a folder X with sub dirs Y and Z and Z has sub dirs 1 and 2. However for no apparent reason the remote machine can't see sub dirs 1 and 2? If I enter the full path in explorer I can see what's in those dirs and I have no messages saying I don't have access or anything, it just refuses to show up!?!?

I've never had any issues like this before. I've tried going to advanced options and propagating user rights throughtout the directory structure but to no avail. I've noticed that all the folders have a greyed out Read Only attrib set which I can uncheck and apply to sub folders but if I look at it again it's reappeared.

If you want me to post anymore info let me know, also if this should be in the WinXP forum please move it.

I'm really confused by this? Any ideas??

Thanks in advance,

Hey everyone.
Just a month ago I bought a new PC built at an Alternate store in my own country. The specs are an Intel i5 6400 core, 16GB of RAM, a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 graphics card, and 120GB of SSD + 1TB of storage.

My audio seems to be managed by Realtek audio. When gaming, I several times a day randomly get the window popping up saying a wire disconnected before it gives the same message again, but there's not a thing I notice in sound or even a change in the way the wires lie as I sit still most of the time.
Now, the big issue happened tonight. I was listening to some orchestral music when suddenly I realised the levels sounded off. Some testing later, I realised that the bass was not audible, the vocals sounded like they came from another room, and the levels were just messed up to the point where my headphones sounded broken and it sounded like it had like 10kbps. Tried the headphones I was using on my laptop, there the audio was crisp as it should be. Strange thing? All system sounds on my PC were crisp and as they should've been, it was Chrome and my games that sounded awful.

I checked every setting but couldn't fix it and was forced to reset to a previous version of Windows, thus losing a handful of my programs. That did solve the issue, but after checking all settings I know of, they were all the exact same as when the bug happened.
I can't reset my PC whenever this time bomb decides to go off, so does anyone know what exactly happened, how I can preven... Read more

Can someone help please, I've had this problem occur a few times now and it is seriously pissing me off.

Most often the issue occurs after iTunes locks up or something while syncing a device (piece of **** software but that's not the point). Then Explorer.exe also hangs. After which ALL sound on the computer comes out in slow-motion. If I try to change the volume, the slider app (SndVol.exe) hangs as well. The only way to fix this is to restart, which is not always possible because I'm in the middle of some other stuff.

The only related log in Event Viewer I could find:

This is my first time posting on these forums so if i need to include specific information or i left anything out please feel free to let me know :)

Basically I'm working on a client's computer that had a failing HDD so they went and bought a new HDD. I replaced the old HDD with the new one and started trying to install windows 7. The dilemma I'm facing is that every time I try to install Windows 7 it freezes on the "completing installation" part of the install (right after the restart). I have tried 3 different copies of Windows 7 I have (a slightly modified 32 bit version, a stock 32 bit version and a stock 64 bit version), I've even tried using a usb drive but that won't even load windows at all and I've tried 2 different DVD drives. I ran a hardware diagnostic which came back clean. I've installed Windows 7 on much older computers and computers with crappier hardware so I know for a fact that that is not the issue. It's a pentium dual core CPU, 4gb of RAM and onboard video.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read this :)

A colleague of mine has had an annoying problem on his PC for a while now and we can't seem to find a solution to it.
The machine he uses is a Dell Precision 470 workstation with 1GB memory, 160GB sata HDD, and 1x Intel Xeon 3.2GHz cpu running Win XP pro. It was originally bought as a Solidworks (3D CAD) workstation, but has been drafted into other uses along the way.
Onto the problem. In certain windows the font seems to be corrupt (See attached pdf's). As you can see from the pdf's some of the message is legible and the other part isn't. The two programs where this happens are Solidworks and Corel Draw. Both programs have been uninstalled and reinstalled using either the uninstaller that came with the program or windows' own Add/Remove feature. CCleaner was used before reinstallation to see if there were any issues, which there didn't appear to be any.
The weird thing is that I run an identical machine, albeit without Corel and the problem doesn't occur.
I don't have a lot of experience with fonts, so all we have done is do a side by side comparison of the fonts on my machine and my colleagues machine using the windows character map.
This problem is not a show stopper, but is pretty annoying as you can imagine.
As this is a work machine, a solution without any registry editing would be preferred, but I acknowledge this is not always possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi davidkimball,

At first glance, I'm suspecting a graphics' driver/card issue but I could be wrong. In any event, could you check the Event Viewer logs to see if there are any entries being logged that are "time-coincident" with the flashing? If some are found, please post a few examples. However, if none are found, do you have an extra monitor you could try?

Hi I keep getting this very strange boot up problem with Windows 10 where after initial boot (logo screen) and it goes to the lock screen, the screen keeps flickering to gray. Also the date and time is displayed wrong at first. For example today it initially said it was 20th November 2015. Then, after a few minutes of just leaving it idle on that screen it reverts back to todays date. Although the screen flickering remains. Then I try to restart by clicking the screen and clicking the restart icon (which gets a bit difficult as the screen keeps flickering to gray..) but once I manage to actually restart it this way the next restart seems to loads fine. Any idea what could be causing this?

Essentially this issue only shows up after the system is shut down or after a restart.

The issue is that after a reboot/restart - Aero is disabled and can't be fixed (via windows aero trouble-shooter - coming back with a message that my card may support Aero but the driver installed doesn't) - In device manager the card shows up fine and displays the correct version of the 8.982 display driver being installed, and as such, any attempts to upgrade the driver through device manager fail as it reports it already has the latest driver.

CCC (Catalyst Control Centre) will start but I'm presented with a white window and a window frame but nothing is selectable (nor any options to select) - it has to be closed from the icon on the taskbar or from task manager.

If I run the AMD Catalyst 12.8 setup file again - and select install -> custom options, I'm presented with a window that tells me everything is installed, however there are 3 options where the green tick is surrounded by a grey checkbox, of which only 2 can be de-selected, (the first non-selectable one is the AMD install manager) the other two selectable/deselectable ones are for the AMD Display Driver and the AMD HDMI Audio Driver.

From these options I've realised that re-installing the AMD Display Driver (via the AMD Catalyst setup.exe file) fixes the problem until the next restart, (I can use the install -> typical option instead of the custom option but it takes longer as it re-installs everything, and it seems th... So, I replaced a Linksys WRT120N router with a Belkin N600 router. I took the Linksys router home to see how well it would work for me. Cool.

Normally, I use a Netgear WGR614 v7 wireless G router at home but I replaced it this morning with the Linksys WRT120N to see how it would work for me.

I have four wired connections:

Linux box (my primary system)
Windows XP Pro SP3 box
Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) SP1 box
Linksys WRT54GL wireless router (which serves as a VoIP router)

With the Netgear router in place, all wired devices function as expected. I can ping all of them and the computers can access the Internet ok.

When I have the Linksys router in place, I can't ping or connect to the Windows 7 system. The other computers and the Linksys WRT54GL router work just fine and can access the Internet just fine. With the Windows 7 system, nothin, nathan, nada.

The Linksys WRT120N had its DHCP pool set to issue IP addresses in the range .100-.150 where the Netgear router was set to issue IP address in the .2-.50 range. I tried changing the Linksys WRT120N to issue IP addresses in the .2-.50 range and the Windows 7 system didn't work. I tried changing the Netgear router to issue IP addresses in the .100-.149 range and the Windows 7 box WORKED! So, then I put the Linksys WRT120N back in place, leaving it set to issues address in the .100-.150 range and the Windows 7 box didn't work.

Right now, I have the Netgear router in place and all systems are working as desired.

My first post on these boards, hoping to get some help with an issue I've run into...

I got a laptop (Lenovo T420) which I've been running Windows 7 on for a while - everything has been working fine. Today I formatted my hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro - working fine except for one strange but quite serious issue.

Whenever I open the lid of my laptop after having closed it (I've set it to "do nothing" when closed) the screen goes black for a second - then I get sent to the desktop and there is no mouse pointer showing - keyboard commands either doesn't work or behave strangely, and all I can do is do a hard reset and restart, upon which everything works until I close the lid again.

Would appreciate any help solving this problem, I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting this kind of thing...

Hi there, since this morning i don't have anymore the icone & power management for my battery. The battery works fine when i unplug and let it for an hour, charging when plugin back.

I looked everywhere and all seems correct. In Device Manager i uninstalled the Battery drivers, then rebooted and all reinstalled correctly.

When i pulled out the battery while wired powered at put it back still not recognized.

I know it is still a fresh battery, but no power management for it!!!!! Just the No icone and No indications at all, about how much is it in use.

My "Acer Bloatwares" Power Management works, keyboard light is working aswell, so not an issue from their apps.

Any Help? Thanks!

Hi guys/girls,
I'm having strange pop-up occurences since installing the above programs (it seems to have started then anyway) on both my computers. I don't know if it's partly due to having Google TaskBar AND Windows Live Toolbar both blocking pop-ups, but here are some of the symptoms:

a) those stupid casalamedia.fastclick *******s still get through as always (I hear *click click click click X10000* which I presume is the pop-ups rapid-firing at the blocker to overcome it?)

b) Many times when I click on a link it opens a new window, the header is blank, task bar button is blank, the footer says "Done." and the window CANNOT be closed unless ending the process of iexplore.exe in the Task Manager.

I've seen people write about blank pages coming up before, but no one has mentioned not being able to close them. I can surf normally even with these "ghost" taskbar buttons, but they just keep adding more below, and it seems to be random. I'm guessing it's some kind of script? This happens more on websites of, shall we say..."questionable integrity".

Thanks for any help!

Hi All,

I am a rookie PC Technician learning my trade and a newbie to the site.

I was hoping someone could help me with this little issue.

On boot up windows Xp stops at the splash screen and gets caught in the perpetual loading motion (a problem I have seen many times before) As per I have popped in the Windows disc and completed a repair. It did pick up errors but still does the same thing. I put the Hard drive in my test machine and it boots to windows but asks for windows activation blah blah but all is working fine. So I put back in machine and the same problem. I also then put a spare hard drive with xp in the first machine (the one with the issue) and again it has the same loading issue. So this rules out the hard drive but what other hardware could cause this issue. RAM? Motherboard?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

A:Strange Windows XP splash screen issue

What is the system specs of the system in question?

Try booting with minimum hardware, i.e. one RAM stick, NO Optical Media, only One HDD if there are multiple HDDs in this computer. If the problem persist & and if this system have more then one RAM modules, then stay with minimum hardware as suggested above but try booting with the other RAM Module(s) one by one. If that doesn't work, there is a reasonable chance that there is something up with the motherboard.

I used to be able to host my team fortress 2 dedicated server on windows vista, when i changed to 7 I couldnt host any servers, i get "STEAM validation rejected" no matter what. I used steam appid's ect so put that out of your head and because i cant host with warcraft 3 even though I forwarded PERFECTLY. theres got to be one reason this is happeneing based on windows 7. I even reformatted my drive and it still doesnt work. I used to have great servers up and now it's impossible to host for any game that I have, I may call cisco tomarrow but I am on the verge of getting XP for a dual boot setup but I really would rather save my $ and keep everything organized on windows 7. Help or trials with me IS APPRECIATED, last thing, I called blizzard and they could not figure out why i couldnt host on warcraft 3. I use 64 bit windows 7. Actually I really really really really think it has something to do with when I reformatted all of the google searches I made before I reformatted are shown purple as if I clicked them when I JUST reformatted. Shouldnt information like that go away when you reformat a PC? also sometimes my internet explorer glitches when I scroll down as if it is too slow to display it yet and makes a huge ugly smeared text looking streak on the page. I really do think it is all related. This issue with the server thing ALSO applies to terreria which is impossible to host without hamachi being used.

Hello I recently purchased a manufacture refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad 8 tablet with windows 8.1 pro. All was good until I turned the tablet on and saw the small text at the bottom right of the screen with the version of windows I was running and the build number. I went to check the activation status and it says it's unactivated and the product key it's using won't work. I've never come across anything like this before. The key is built into the system and should always work at least it did in windows 7.

I did some research online and people said you could download a windows 8.1 iso from microsoft to reinstall an oem version and if it's the right version it won't ask for a key during install it will read it from the bios. So I downloaded the Pro, Core, and the single language Iso and all three ask for a key before installing.Should I try installing one of the iso's with the keys I do have? I would really prefer not to return the tablet? It took long enough to get it and I was hoping I could avoid waiting even more. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what ShowKeyplus is telling me about the Product keys on the tablet.

I have two brand new Windows 7 Professorial Machines and when I connect to them via Remote Desktop, the logon screen shows "Windows XP Professional" and the classic logon screen. When I try to logon nothing works, domain user, administrator, local user, etc.

I have looked at all the local security policies and since these are joined on the domain, I've looked at the Group Policies, and see nothing that would force an "XP" mode during Remote Desktop.

We do have a Terminal Server (2008) and a 2003 Domain Controller, but I am not using it to connect to these brand new machines.

Hello all,
I was hoping someone could give me a little insight and direction on what might be the problem here. Here's the deal:
When I boot up windows my hard drive will "clunk" (basically it sounds likes it powering off and then back on really quick). It does this intermittently, but every single time it happens it happens at the same spot in the bootup sequence (I am gauging by the approximate time it takes from the moment the Windows XP loading screen appears to when I get the "clunk"). When this happens Windows stops load. I figure it is obviously confused by the sudden and unexpected disappearance of its hard drive. Anyone have a clue what’s going on? I have a feeling its a combination of mobo, hard drive, and windows XP causing it. At first I thought perhaps the hard drive was overheating and shutting down. I installed a hard drive heatsink and the temps are normally below 30C now. The problem still remains however.

Here are my system stats.
AMD Opteron 170 (stock speeds for now with stock HSF)
2x Corsair 1024MXS 3200c2pt @ 2.5,3,3,6,1T
2x 400 GB Western digital SE16 drive
Lite-On DVD RW
X-Plosion DTS sound card
Antec NeoHE 550

Thanks in advanced for any assistance you can provide!

Hi, I'm not sure if this is in the right place... this is a new account, and I don't know much about this site. My apologies if this is in the wrong category, it's just such a unique issue that I'm not sure where it would go. Anyway, I have an Acer Aspire V5 571p laptop. I've had it for about two years, and it's been working well enough for what I need. (I'm a college student) But recently, I wasn't able to connect to my wifi at home. Nothing that I know of changed within the router or modem, and nothing has changed within the laptop (except for the connection issue) It connects just fine everywhere else. The other two computers in the house (not mine) connect just fine, they're both slightly older desktops. The other laptop that I own isn't connecting as well.
I've done all of the following:
-reset the router
-reset the modem
-restarted my computer
-made sure all the information is correct for the wireless network
-completely reset my laptop to factory default
-bought a new router
-moved the router around the house to see if I was too far away.
I don't know what else to do, I've talked to four different tech support professionals, and none of their advice has worked. I'm coming here as a last ditch effort. Maybe someone else has had the same problem? I'm about to give up, but I need wifi at home for school, so I don't really have that option.
I appreciate any advice at all.

I recently built a new computer (Intel mobo, Core 2 Duo quad-core, 4GB RAM) and installed the Windows 7 beta (32-bit).

One issue that I have observed seems to be related to power management. After about a half-hour of non-use, the computer seems to go into sleep mode. The screen shuts down, all the fans stop, and the hard drive and power lights go out. It then sits there for about a minute like this, and then, for no reason that I can see, it powers back up again. The fans rev up, the lights come on, the screen takes on a glow (though nothing is displayed), etc.

After a few minutes, it powers down again. After another minute, it powers back up. This cycle seems to go on indefinitely.

Does anone have any idea what might be causing this or what I might do to determine what the problem is? I have never seen anything like this before.

It could be one of your peripherals waking the computer from sleep.
Check the setting of anything you have that could wake the computer up!

Win 7 RC. Legit Key.

Just like everyone else(except this is on all of my machines and just immediately happened) I'm receiving the error:

"Windows Live Messenger has stopped working"
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

My problem started yesterday while I was working. I opened up my laptop and my MSN IM's wouldn't open. I could highlight them but not bring them up. So I ended the process of WLM and then proceeded to re open it. I then received that error. The weird thing is. So I decide to TS into my work station and I turn on MSN, I get the same error. I needed to get some information from my brother at home and my cell doesn't work in our labs. I decided to mesh into my PC at home turn on WLM and I get the same freaking error!?!? I have spent some time trying to repair and uninstall etc.. so to verify this is on my end. I sign into Web WLM works fine. I then decide to open up my Virtual XP machine. I sign into regular MSN messenger, everything is ok there. I then download WLM to my VPC and sign in with out any issues....

I'm freaking stumped now. My settings on my WLM were to be signed into multiple locations, so I turned that off, changed my recent display picture tried to set all the settings to default. Turned off adobe from start up restarted my pc, repaired\uninstalled 2 times for msn. I'm about to try JV16 and remove it from my registry but I dou... Read more

Hi and welcome.
Do you have a recent restore point saved? If so I'd try that or uninstall and reinstall Media Center again.

Today, I decided to clean install windows 10 version 10586 in a virtual machine (using vmware player), so I could use it to test Insider versions (I had a spare 8.1 retail licence to activate it).

It all installed fine, but the really strange thing is I did not enter ANY account information ie MS account or any local account information, but it set up an identical local account to the account I use as my main account on the PC, even without any password.

I cannot for the life of me see how this or why this happened.

It is as if vmware player picked up data from my main OS, and used it automatically?

Hello Everyone,

I tried to find a post regarding this issue but I could not find anyone with this same problem

I upgrade a 32 bit windows XP desktop to 64 bit Windows 7 Pro. I performed a clean install from the official Microsoft DVD. Windows XP was working perfectly fine before install of Windows 7.

Install was very slow (took about 15 hours total to install). After installation, my computer proceeds through the login screen resulting in a black screen with only a cursor which I can move. Occasionally the "thinking circle" will pop up but after 2 hours nothing happens. After reading posts on this forum I tried unplugging everything from my computer (physically unplugged my storage drive, CD-ROMS, floppy drive, pulled out wireless card, and removed sound card). Again, upon start up I get the black screen with only a cursor. I then saw a post that said removing all RAM Dimms but 1 helps and boom everything runs fantastic. PC boots up fast and Windows runs great.

I have 4x 1Gb DDR2 (I know 2x 2Gb would be better but I'm poor and this is all I got ) so I figured one slim must be bad. FYI all 4 slims are identical and each pair is dual channel and I never had an issue with this RAM on the XP install. For this next part lets call my 4 RAM slots slots 1,2,3 and 4 and my 4 RAM slims A,B,C and D.

Slim A in slot 1 = Runs perfect
Slim A in slot 1 and Slim B in slot 3 (Dual channel) = Runs Perfect
Slim A in slot 1, Slim B in slot 3 and Slim C in slot... Read more

We have a W7 printer issue as follows: My wife and I both have W7 Home Premium, 64bit, machines networked together. She has an HP PhotoSmart 7600 printer. I can see it and print to it from my network connection. I can print plain paper or photo paper from my machine. My wife however can only print plain paper from her machine. She cannot print pictures. We went through the driver replacement/refresh recommended by HP and rebooted the machine. It immediately recognized the printer as an HP PhotoSmart 7660.

I can print fine from my machine over the network but she still cannot print pictures. Anybody have any ideas?

I can't seem to find anything about my specific problem. I had an HP PSC 2410 all-in-one series printer connected to a Dlink print server. The printer started making terrible noises when it started up, so I disconnected it and reconnected an old deskjet instead. I recently fixed the all-in-one (turned out i just needed to clean the scanning glass and mirrors), but the print server no longer powers up. Now here's the real issue:

I can't get the printer to install locally via USB port. I was finally able to delete the network printer (it kept coming back after reboot, offline), but I can' get Windows to auto-detect and install the drivers. I can't even download the drivers from the HP website because they aren't available (windows update only). I can't manually add the printer either, because the virtual USB port is unavailable. I'd really like to get this printer running again, especially because I brought it back from the dead and I really need to scanner. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The printer is an old HP LaserJet P2015 connected to a Windows 7 Pro (32-bit) machine.  Every morning, when the user boots the computer up and logs in, that printer will show as an unknown device under Devices and Printers.  The actual printer
icon for the P2015 will be grayed out.  If you just turn the printer off and back on the unknown device goes away, and the P2015 icon will go back to ready.  I have tried multiple USB cable and ports on the computer and a powered USB hub.  I've
tried multiple drivers, and the only one that really wants to work is the actual HP driver for the P2015 (which took a while to find).  The HP universal print drivers all have their own quirks with it.  I've adjusted power setting for maximum efficiency,
ran sfc /scannow, ran chkdsk /r, and some other things that I cannot remember.  Is there anything I can try that I didn't list?

How do I know if my mpeg video file is a mpeg 1 or mpeg 2? I asked this same question on Bing and haven't found the answer. It doesn't say in my properties.

And when I try to drag my video into the timeline track with windows movie maker my video that I'm trying to add into the timeline track only wants to goes into the audio/music track. Why is it doing this and how can we solve the problem?

Have a bless day

A:How to know the type of MPEG a file is and a strange issue with windows movie maker

Download and install GSpot ( link in my sig), open GSpot and open one of the files - it will tell you a number of things: what container (mpeg1, mpeg2,.avi etc) has been used, what codec has been used and whether you have that codec available on your computer (this for both audio and video), pixel dimensions, fps and more.

Where did the file originate? from a camera? downloaded? a DVD?

Older versions of Windows Moviemaker don't support all codecs used by mpeg2 files - see this article from Microsoft - this is why your file only shows in the audio track of the timeline.

My suggestion would be to download and install the ffdshow-tryouts from here. This should allow decoding and re-encoding of mpeg1 & 2
You may then need to go to Tools>Options then click on the Compatability tab - there should then be a list of codecs/filters that have a little check box next to them - scroll down until you find ffdshow - there will be an ffdshow audio & an ffdshow video - tick both. Might need to do a restart after, can't remember - been a long time since using both XP and Moviemaker.

hope this helps
