M710s M910s M720s M920s SFF: successfully installed GT 1030 (HTPC, 4K monitor TV, graphics)

Q: M710s M910s M720s M920s SFF: successfully installed GT 1030 (HTPC, 4K monitor TV, graphics)

I was finally able to find a proper card that fits the M910 SFF.
https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N1030D5-2GL#kf
This is the only card currently on the market the supports the latest HTPC 4K/8K specification (H feature set: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_PureVideo) and its size is small and short enough to be installed inside M910 SFF.
It is also only 30W TDP, which is just a bit more than the original Nvidia GT 730 that was pre-installed.
Quite happy with this awesome system.
Hope this helps.

Mod: since the M710s uses the same case, this particular Gigabyte GT 1030 will also fit it (other GT 1030 models, at this time, are too long.) Topic also applies to the M720s and M920s as they use the same case.

Mod: moved to it's own thread and edited Subject line accordingly. Mea culpa for having mistakely called it a GTX 1030.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: M710s M910s M720s M920s SFF: successfully installed GT 1030 (HTPC, 4K monitor TV, graphics)

I would recommend that you'd best prepare yourself to be disappointed with your "coming soon" M910s SFF machine, in that I am at least reasonably skeptical that there is sufficient "clearance" for almost any "modern" decent add-on graphics card which can fit inside the newly narrowed (i.e. the SFF case is now shortened front-to-rear by almost 4" from all previous SFF cases) SFF case. The 4" reduction essentially reduces the interior expansion card clearance by 4", i.e. similarly reducing the new maximum size card length that can be used in the M910s.

You should read this thread of mine which I posted a few months back regarding these very issues with an M910s SFF I'd ordered and three different graphics cards I tried to install, but all of which would not fit. I believe the new maximum size expansion card is only around 5.75", whereas with all previous SFF cases you could install a card that was probably up to 6.8" without an issue. Most graphics cards are 6.25" - 6.75" and as long as they are low-profile they can all be used.

No longer. I think the maximum length card is now about 5.75". And your GT1030 is 5.9" long and 2.7" tall. Doesn't sound like much of a difference, but it just might be the straw that broke the camel's back.

The problem is the swing-up/down drive bay assembly inside the SFF case, which in its full "snapped down/closed/locked" position has to clear the end of the expansion graphics card. With the now reduced 4" inside the case (which used to be more than enough for a 6.8" card) it now will not clear a card longer than about 5.75". So it stops first by hitting the top edge of the expansion card (unless it is not very tall) and will not latch closed.

Lenovo's graphics upgrade offering is a GT730, which measures only 5.7" long and 2.7" high. So it fits (I guess the 2.7" of your GT1030 will be fine) since it's shorter than 5.75" which is what I measured as the max length a card could be when I had the M910s in my hands.

So, you may just barely be lucky if that 5.9" GT 1030 card will work. I ended up not wanting to accept a lesser graphics card (I tried two, including one GTX1050ti from Gigabyte and a different one from MSI). Neither fit. I finally was going to settle on a downgraded low-profile GTX750ti from MSI that was only 5.75" long, but then I found out the StarTech M.2 PCIe-M.2 daughterboard card I was going to install in the x1 expansion slot was 6.2" long, so it wouldn't work either!!! In reality I could have purchased the Lenovo M.2 SSD adapter bracket if I'd known about it at the time, which would have allowed me to use an M.2 Samsung drive without needing the StarTech adapter, but I didn't know it and I was already furious about the graphics card length problem.

Anyway, bottom line, I finally decided the M910s case was more "tiny" than "SFF". I returned it for a refund and instead bought an M910t (which really isn't much larger than the old SFF cases). This allowed me to go with the fullsize EVGA GTX 1050ti SC card I really wanted to be using anyway.

Again, you may just get away with the 5.9" length of your GT 1030 card. But if so, it will really be just barely. But maybe not. As I said, be prepared.

Just received the new M910s SFF machine I purchased a few weeks back from Allstarshop.com (because Lenovo was "sold out" and not even accepting orders for them at that time). I had also bought some extra "add-on" hardware parts from online retailers, expecting no problem at all installing them.  Note that I checked again today, and Lenovo is once again accepting orders for the M910s SFF machines.  So that problem is behind us.

Well... surprise. I had unexpected problems and trouble with 2 out of the 3 add-on hardware items I bought for the M910s, so I wanted to share my experience to give others who might have a similar project in the works a heads-up.

(1) The 10MK000QUS Kaby Lake i5-7500 machine was factory configured with 1x8GB of DDR4-2400 memory, Win10 x64 Pro, 1TB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA3 HDD, and optical CD/DVD drive.

(2) I added an additional 1x8GB of matching DDR4-2400 memory purchased from Crucial.  No problem.  Works perfectly, and the machine is now 2x8GB=16GB operating in dual-channel mode as expected.

(3) I had purchased a Gigabyte low-profile GTX-1050ti graphics card for use in the new machine, not expecting any problems. Well, it turns out there IS a problem, because this card at a length of 6.57" (167mm) is just bit too long.  The swing-up drive bay assembly inside the SFF case doesn't quite have the needed <167mm clearance in order to close properly with the graphics card installed.  It needs maybe just a... Remarkably, the "local express" delivery from Newegg got here about noon!  Amazing.

But sadly, the Zotac 1050ti card which was 160mm (6.3") in length is STILL TOO LONG.

So, much to my disappointment, it appears Lenovo has reduced the internal space in these new SFF cases, making it just about impossible to use almost all graphics cards.  I have installed Sapphire R7-250 low-profile / HD7750 cards in multiple M93p SFF and M800 SFF machines, and had no problem whatsoever, even though that card is 170mm (6.7").

Obviously the previous generation of SFF cases simply was larger.  The SFF cases now being used for the M910s are just too small.  If I'd known this I probably would have gone with the tower machine, if only to be able to use my intended GTX 1050ti graphics card (which could have been full-size in the tower).

Anyway, I've now ordered a lesser graphics card than I'd intended, the MSI version of the low-profile GTX 750ti. because it's length is only 5.75" (146mm), which absolutely will fit.  But this card only has DVI and HDMI connections, thus lacking a DisplayPort connector.  It's also only 2GB of DDR5 memory instead of 4GB as in the 1050ti, and with a slower core clock speed.  Bandwidth is 86GB/s vs. 112GB/s for the 1050ti.  Thankfully, there is at least one of these relatively modern DDR5 cards which is short enough to fit even if it's not the 1050ti.

SFF cases need low-profile form cards, which are less tall and have shorter brackets.  Typically they can only hold two full-size video connectors in single-slot wide form, or three full-size video connectors in double-slot wide form.  Sometimes they may have three connectors in single-slot width if they utilize "micro-format" connectors (e.g. miniDP and micro-HDMI) instead of full-size connectors, and sometimes they arrange the three video connectors to use both slots of the dual-wide form.

The "mini" designation on this Zotac card seems to be relevant to its short length, i.e. 5.7", due to the single-fan design.  But its height is with a full-size bracket containing three video connectors lined up on the left-half of the dual-slot bracket.  Looks similar to the EVGA GTX 1050ti SC but the cheaper Zotac card only has 2GB DDR5 memory whereas the somewhat more expensive EVGA version has 4GB DDR5.  Otherwise these two single-fan cards are essentially identical, meaning they are both short in length but full-size bracket in height.  They will only fit in a tower case, not an SFF case.

In contrast the "low profile" version of the Zotac card (which is what you MUST use if you could use any version of the GTX 1050ti) is dual-fan design and thus longer (it says 6.3", which might still physcially work in your SFF case but I'd be cautious about being too optimistic... Read more

I've just recently bought brand new parts to build a desktop and everything was running smoothly until I installed the video card. The monitor wouldn't display anything anymore. After removing the video card, everything worked perfectly again. However, when the video card was plugged in, the fans were running but the monitor was still not displaying anything. Could this be an issue with the mobo, videocard, psu, or monitor?

Did you disable onboard video? sometimes if you use the mobo's video output it gets confuzzled when you switch to a dedicated GPU. also are you plugging everything in correctly? have you updated drivers?

I just installed a firewire card into my first PCI slot. The monitor would not turn on.
I removed the firewire card and the monitor worked.
I put the firewire card back in and removed the PCIx16 Graphics Card. The monitor worked.

I'm running without a graphics card in the PCIx16 slot at this point. I'm just running my monitor through the onboard graphics card.

So far I've:
-installed the drivers for the firewire port
-Upgraded the power supply to 525w from 300w
-I've messed around in BIOS, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for.

The system:
-ASUS CM5671 (Purchased in 2010 from Best Buy)
-The graphics card came with the computer but I dont have the specs on it. I know it's NVIDIA GEFORCE but I'm not sure what model exactly. Nothing super fancy. GT 8800 if I had to guess.
-The firewire card is a 3 port Dynex card

I can't seem to figure this out, but I'd like to be able to run my Graphics card while my firewire card is connected (Also planning on adding another TV tuner card into the 2nd PCI slot)

Pleae Help!

Hi, I have a H50-05 Type 90BH desktop. It was originally advertised on the Best Buy website as having a R7 graphics card but it turned out to have a R4 graphics card which just isn't powerful enough. R7 240 has what I need for the games that I play but I am facing two issues. There is limited space between the pci-e slot and the RAM slots, so I am not sure which cards will fit the case. The second and possibly more difficult obstacle is that the computer has a built in power supply that is connected directly on to the mother board so it doesn't appear that I can install a regular power supply to this computer.I am having difficulty finding information on this model so I was wondering if anyone has had success upgrading to a better graphics card? Preferrably a card that can be self powered by the pci-e slot with the oem power supply which from what I can gather is only 90 watts.

Thanks

There appears to be only one H50-05 model, and it has a 65w 'adapter', which excludes adding any graphics card.  Is it an external power brick, like a laptop?  If it's internal, can you post some photos of it, using the photo button above.  Thx.

Edit:  the H50-05 specs shows different versions, with different size power adapters, processors, and graphics options (you could give us the full model number, we can Google it and see what it's specs are):

Hi this is my first question here.
I just bought a M900 SFF (i7-6700) which has a 210W PSU. I want to get a MSI 750ti low profile GPU but worried about the lack of power so Im considering upgrading the original PSU.
However, the motherboard has a Lenovo style 10-pin ATX and another 4-pin. So far I couldn't find any PSU that matches the motherboard. I would really appreciate some help!

Also, I tried using the 750ti LP with the current 210W PSU. It worked fine with Would of Warcraft, but I havn't try other programs that might have higher power demand. Do you think I should keep looking for a PSU upgrade plan or is it actually just fine with the 210W? I used a PSU calculator and for my current system (with 750ti) it gave a 205W estimation, which is just under 210W.

I've read many similar posts here on this problem, but found no clear solution. I bought this partly for the advertised 'potential for upgrade', which now seems to me a lie because I can't even upgrade a PSU???

I have not seen this system or any USFF in person, but after viewing photos of it, I'm not clear on how it physically accommodates any standard size graphics card.  It certainly could not accommodate a dual width card.

Irrespective, to meet your games minimum requirements, you need a system that we accommodate a GTX 1050, which is only avail as dual width, and power that card's 75w.  The only ThinkCentre that can do that without the possible need to upgrade the power supply is a 'tower' system.

btw, all M91 systems have PCIe 2.0, which works fine with 3.0 cards.

I'm not sure exactly where to ask this, so I'll try here. I have installed (or so the Update History page tells me) IE 9 (Win 7 Home Ed 64-bit). The history says the installation was successful (actually, more than once). The list of Windows Features shows IE9 running. But when I click on any IE icon that I can find, I'm still getting IE 8. There is no IE in my Start Menu, the only IE files I can find in Program Files (x88) on my boot drive are version 8 (right click Properties on iexplore.exe). If IE 9 is installed and "running," where do I find it to start it up?

Thanks,

I'm thinking about using an old PC as a Tivo.

Nothing fancy, just a single tuner card so I can program the thing to save TV shows to a hard drive and play them back at standard cable or even broadcast quality later.

So my question is this....

whats the minimum useful graphics port for this limited application?

My old PC has a 1x/2x AGP port.

Should I even bother trying to use it this way (say with a 2x/4x video card) or should I find a mobo with a better graphics port before proceeding?

Thanks.

Hello dyedcorduroy, welcome to Seven Forums!

Does the partition have a drive letter in XP?

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire Windows disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.

I've been recommending the GT 1030 here for some time as the best low-power graphics adapter (30w.)   It is now listed in the readme file for the Nvidia driver (2018 releases - M92p example) on the Lenovo support website as a supported card.

It is known to work in systems going back to the M90p generation.  And while it is available as a full-height card, most are low-profile cards, suitable for SFF systems.  Be sure the check the length of space available in a SFF, especially for the M710s & M910s models, before you decide to buy, to ensure you get one short enough.

The GT 1030 has twice the performance as the GT 730 (the previous best 30w low-power Nvidia card, which this replaces), and has important new graphics card features, such as DX 12 and 4K HDMI, and support for PureVideo HD 8 and Feature set H.

Have you tried going into the device manager and looking for any yellow marked items? Something similar was seen with Vista as well with usb drives. USB Drive Problems with Vista

Either right clicking to uninstall followed by a full restart or to have Windows perform an automatic search won't always work. A manual search by selecting the device from the list of devices will often see Windows install the correct generic driver where you end up with "Windows has successfully installed your new hardware" type message.

I have been getting updates with the same two KB numbers supposedly successfully installed five days in a row and they are waiting to be installed again tomorrow. I have Windows 7/64-bit.

They are updates for .NET Framework 4.5, 4.5.1 & 4.5.2 and the numbers are KB3097996 & KB3098781.

I upgraded to Windows 10 because I was assured that it was supposed to be so much better. After a month of nothing but trouble I wanted to go back to Win7 but the files to allow this had been erased. I had to start over with a fresh install but I did not wipe the hard drive. Win7 has been acting differently ever since. Most of the changes I like and a few I don't. I'm wondering if this update problem has something to do with Win7's new peculiarities.

Any suggestions? These installs don't seem to be trouble that I can tell. Should I just let it go, or is there something I can/should do to stop this?

Thanks,

I see a lot of history in the forums from years 2011 and 2012 about this update loading over and over. What is happening now is different in that the update keeps saying it needs to be installed, I install it, computer says it installed successfully, I reboot. I rerun update search and it finds same update kb2538242 still needs to installed. The difference is that it actually does need to be installed...it does not show in the "view updates" list.

I have tried manually installing, and installing an alternate file I saw in the forums (it no longer exists). I've installed the file probably 20 times. I can't just ignore it because it won't do any of the later updates including those for Office 2010 which I just installed. I can't figure out what to do. Can anyone help? This news may be old hat to many of you, but it was a pleasant surprise to me, so wanted to share it.

My Win7 64-bit computer was freezing every now and then, for no explainable reason, but I simply put up with it, as various corrective steps failed to help.

Then I noticed that my Internet Explorer v10 was not playing friendly with the online Internet screens for my bank and credit union (appeared to be partially adobe related).  Switching back to IE9 and IE8 did not work; instead they totally goofed up my IE browser to the point it would not connect to anything any more.

Well, after unsuccessfully trying to reinstall IE, I tried to do a Win7 repair using my original install CD.  Apparently that option is not available, unlike earlier Win versions, so I instead chose to reinstall Win7 using the upgrade option versus a clean install.  It took a long time, but lo and behold - it gave me a clean resinstall of Win7, and ALL of my existing software programs were still installed and working.  All I had to do was download and install some Win7 software updates.  Not having to reinstall (and then configure) all of my software, plus not losing recent data files was a real blessing.

Now I no longer have random machine freezes, and I have stuck with IE8 so I can safely access my online financial info from the banks & credit unions.

Hi there

Which firewall are you using? Its worth a try stopping/pausing it and then downloading updates to check up.
Also try this and see if it helps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814033

Additionally, you can manually download them too by visiting the MS download site section.

Had a problem (user profile), so reverted to last usable configuration. Now I get a message that "device driver software was not successfully installed." That would be easier to fix if I knew which device was meant.

Device Manager shows two USB devices with exclamation marks, each marked "unknown device."

First one's status said "Windows has stopped this device beause it has reported problems. (Code 43). Searched for drivers and, after a long search, I got a message that "The best driver software for your device is already installed."

Second says "This device disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources. (Code 29). " Another long search, and I'm told the same thing?

Should I uninstall these drivers and trust them to reinstall themselves?

A:Device driver software not successfully installed--OK, but which?

First thoughts would be the external hardrives.
Secondly W7 does not have any generic USB3 drivers.

The firmware problem will definately require a visit to the problem devices home page as firmware updates are not MS updated.

post the device id codes (unknown device), see screenshot

Hi, every time I booted up my pc, it automatically attempts to install Broadcom xD Picture card Host controller and Broadcom xD Picture Bus Driver but the installation fails every time. I use DriverPack Solution to install and update my drivers and when I checked if all the drivers are installed, it's all there. I tried using the Windows automatic driver search but it fails also.

By the way, I'm using Acer Aspire 4752g.

A:[SOLVED] Device driver not successfully installed

I don't recommend (and neither do the moderators If I recall correctly) the use of driver-locating software like DriverPack etc, especially when your laptop brand has excellent manufacturer's support on the web.

You should download drivers manually direct from the Acer Support website as that's the only way to be sure of what you are downloading & that they are the correct drivers for your model.

Select your Windows version on this page & wait for it to refresh:

United States (default): Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Notebook / Aspire / Aspire 4752G

If United States is not the appropriate country, click the link at bottom left of page.

So i've just took of windows 10 and put windows 7 on instead, im sure you know why. And since then none of my usb devices will connect and install their drivers. my usb mouse and keyboard essentially do not work. I've been at it for hours trying to update drivers and such but nothing is working. Im not a genius when it comes to PC's so I do need help with this. i'm currently using a borrowed ps/2 mouse and keyboard to type all this and would love to get my peripherals back soon!

Hello,

By which process did you remove Windows 10 and reinstall Windows 7?

Hopefully, you used the Windows 7 install disc which came with your custom built desktop computer to reformat and reinstall Windows 7.

Reader doesn't install no matter how many times I repeat the procedure. Originally, I thought it was because of HP's pre-installed "PDF Complete" bloatware, but even after uninstall and reboot, it doesn't seem to work.

Anyone else ever encounter this problem (and its solution)?
