Setting Network Connections Options via Registry or Scripting

Q: Setting Network Connections Options via Registry or Scripting

In Windows XP SP2
If I Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
In Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
In Local Area Network Connection Properties, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
In Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, click Advanced, and then click the DNS tab.
There are two options at the bottom of the dialog box.
Register this connectionís addresses in DNS
Use this connectionís DNS suffix in DNS registration
Is there any way to set these two options with Registry entries or by scripting ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I reformatted my Dell PC, and now I have no sound, I cannot change my screen resolution, and I have no options in my Network Connections. I think as long as I can manage to get online, I can go to the Dell website and re-install all the missing drivers to fix the rest of my problems, but I need your help to let me know what I need to do in order to get online!

When I go to my Network Connections, there is nothing there, no LAN option, or Dial-Up option...nothing. When I go to Add Network Connection, it will not let me add one because it says they are already there or something. I installed the Linksys software for my external wireless card and everything, but without anything in the Network Connections folder, it will not let me connect.

How can I resolve this problem?

Any help would be appreciated!

A:Reformatted, now no options in Network Connections

You can go to the Dell Support site, put in your Service Tag Number and download the chipset, video Network Adaptor and other drivers.

Start with the chipset drivers . . then others in any order

A:Help with Setting Up Remote Network Connections

Read other 6 answers

First of all, sorry if this post is in the wrong section. I'm not sure where it goes. If it's in the wrong section, please accept my apologies and feel free to move it.

Anyway, I'm trying to setup my router to allow access to remote connections. I want to be able to connect to a couple computers at the office (both on the same network, the one router recognizing them both) from my home computer. I've done this before so I know how to set it up for remote connection to one computer. I'm not sure how it works for more than one though, and that's where I need some help.

I've got the router forwarding RPC connections on port 3389 to my work computer's internal IP address. It's working fine. I can connect to it from home using Windows' Remote Desktop Connection. Now I want to add the same connection to our server. I added the same port forwarding entry (RPC) but with a different port number (3388) and the server's internal IP address. I'm assuming that RDC can distinguish between the two computers by appending the port number after the IP address (so I enter XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:3388). This doesn't seem to work.

I made sure the server can accept remote connections from anonymous clients, but it still won't connect.

What can I do to set my router's port forwarding to allow remote connections to more than one computer in the office, and how can I configure the server to allow remote connections?

I am having a problem with IE 11 on certain websites that use scripting.  The main one is ADP's workforce now (https://workforcenow.adp.com).  When it works as expected the site takes 3-5 seconds from
the time you click on the login link to when it displays the portal.  When it doesn't work, it takes about 16 seconds.  If the initial page load was the only area it was slow we could live with it probably but its slow on scripted events throughout
the site.  Things like in the timecard area when somebody punches in a schedule it doesn't display and if they put it in again and come back it has duplicated the schedule by finally updating and showing up properly.
We are a one browser company and IE is it for us for a couple of reasons.  I did test it with chrome however and it doesn't have the issues that IE does.
I am pretty sure its something to do with a group policy setting but I can't be sure exactly which.  We have policies in an GPO for IE 8-9 and another for IE10 and I have duplicated those settings over into an IE11 type GPO as they are handled differently
in group policy for IE11.  If a user hasn't ever logged into a machine and they have the standard OLD policy, they get the settings and site performance is slow.  If I move them to the NEW GPO with the duplicated settings its fast, as long as they
haven't logged into the machine before.... Read more

PCs are Win 7 Ultimate, All are joined to the Domain
Domain Controller, DNS, DHCP Server (on same instance) is Server 2012 standard
The network topology is like this: Router as Internet Gateway>Switch>Wired to Server and PC's, SIP phones, and Wireless Access Point all on same subnet. DNS and DHCP have been offloaded to Server Roles and switched off on the router.
All of the PCs have network cards that have joined the domain network at least some of the time since I set them up.
Some of them have always picked up the domain network and continue to this day.
Some of them intermittently pick up the domain network and other times join whatever other unmanaged network is available.
Some of them have stopped picking up the domain network altogether and will, no matter how many times their NICs are restarted, always join a non-domain (unmanaged) network.
When the NICs are not joining the domain, they are unable to ping hostnames of any devices on the network but nslookup of the hostnames usually works. The DC, DNS, DHCP server's IP can be pinged without issue, ipv4 or ipv6.
I am recording DNS Client Errors (ID 1014) on all of the PCs during the intervals when their NICs are identifying which network to join.

-On the PCs that are catching the domain network I am only getting a single error about the root domain, eg the domain is ad.domain.com and I am only getting errors about how the configured DNS servers cannot resolve domain.com (nothing with fully qualified

I've had my win7 laptop for about 3 weeks now.  I have an older XP machine upstairs.  I created links to several web folders using the info from my old machine, and everything worked fine.
Today, when I went to open one of my network locations (FTP web hosting), where it normally is under "Computer," there was only a file inside called Target.lnk .  Normally you see the web folder contents.
I had 2 network locations like this, and both worked fine a week ago, and now show the above behavior.
Additionally, if I try to create a new network location, or map a new network drive, I get an error, "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another."
I know the folder is valid b/c I can navigate to it in my web browsers, and log in with my FTP credentials.
So, what's going on?  I've read that Win7 has issues with web folders, but both locations worked a week ago!
Any help would be appreciated.

* Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is

I know how to disable the proxy server but if i close firefox and reopen the old setting with proxy enabled returns back into effect and i get the error again. So i can get firefox to connect but i have to disable the proxy server each time (very annoying). i have done test with very reliable virus & spyware programs plus even used hijackthis and they have found nothing infected or a problem that may cause this, please help if you can this is totally doing my head in.

Do you have a proxy managing add-on installed?
That could affect it...

I used to get the same problem when going between school and home (i'd have to disable and enable using a proxy)

Best thing i can advise is installing:

then going into the options (tools/add-ons/proxyswitch/options) and then setting it to turn the proxy off when firefox is started... then you can just click the little switch icon to turn the proxy back on....

i don't know what the actual problem is though, have you got anything installed that would affect the proxy?

What i am trying to do is to use both these internet connections simultaneously to gain downloading speed on VUZE.for that i am using the Routing Option available under Advanced network options in tools in vuze(azeurus).

What the problem is that, this was working well the last time i used it, but now it is not.

What now happening is: - i have the wifi connected, and now i am connecting to my data card, suddenly my wifi connections goes into limited connectivity and is not having internet access all of a sudden but the Data card is there to provide internet. If i disconnect the Data card, wifi regains internet access.

i want both of these to work simultaneously, which can be achieved wit the vuze routing option but this can only work if both the connections remain alive simultaneously.

I am trying to add a refurbished HP system to my menagerie. It had Windows 7 Pro (64bit) installed when I got it. I went through the setup without any problems, created a user account for myself (Lewis), set the system name to TestPC and started installing and testing some software. Simple internet access (web page browsing) is working fine.

Today, I connected and external disk drive (from a Windows XP system) and I was able to successfully read anything on it. But when I attempted to delete a file, I was told I needed permission even though I am the administrator. I found some instructions at Microsoft for changing ownership of the files on the external drive, so I did that. It was then that I noticed the user name shown was Lewis(TestPC\Lewis) and I was still not able to delete files on the external drive.

Being primarily a Unix person, I have been fumbling around looking for something that would indicate why Windows felt the need to attach the system name to user names. In Computer>Properties>Computer name, domain and workgroup settings>System Properties>Computer Name>Network ID, I found a selection with the following description: "This computer is part of aa business network; I use it to connect to other computers at work". Since this is not true, I selected the other option and worked my way back out to restart the computer.

After the restart, that erroneous setting was still there. I have tried several more times to change it but th... Read more

Hi Lewis, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The \\DOMAIN_OR_PC_NAME\USERNAME combination is not erroneous, it's how Windows keeps track of users in your network (even if said network only has one Windows PC).

For Windows, when a computer does not belong to a domain, the PC name is used instead of a domain name. I am currently typing this using a laptop with name AGM-W8LAP02 (my own naming policy, my home network is called AGM and this is Windows 8 Laptop number 02). My complete username for this user profile I am currently using on this computer is \\AGM-W8LAP02\Kari. This combination \\DOMAIN_OR_PC_NAME\USERNAME does separate my user profile Kari on this computer from user profile Kari on other computers. User \\AGM-W8LAP02\Kari is not the same user than \\AGM-W7DESK01\Kari.

For Windows it's easier and more logical to use this naming policy even if your PC would be the only one in network. If you now add computers to your network which also contain user profile Lewis, Windows does not have to change the system to be able to separate users not only from other users on the same computer but also from same users on other computers.

I'm trying to set up a Synology NAS for my home network, however I can only access via the Synology utility and through a browser using the internal IP address. It does not otherwise appear on my network; I can't ping it, map drives to it by any method, etc.

Googling suggests that this problem can be linked the setting in system > computer name, domain and workgroup settings> change settings > Network ID; and ensuring it is set to 'This is a home network'. However my computer is stuck on 'this computer is part of a business network'; if I change the setting, it asks for a restart and immediately reverts to 'business'. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Any way to force the setting?
My network itself is set to 'home'.

Other potential solutions to the NAS problem are also welcome, as that's what the real issue is, although I feel I've hunted most of the low hanging fruit already.

A:Can't change setting System Properties > network ID setting

If this machine ever belonged to a Domain then it would say that. The problem is that once you are part of a Domain you will be locked out of changing the location settings.

Domain Network: For domain networks in large corporate environments. This type of network is controlled by a network administrator and can?t be changed.

You may be able to change this by going to Winkey + R to open Run prompt and type gpedit.msc

Navigate to: Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Setting | Network List Manager Policies > Network Location tab, you may be able to change the location here but it may still be locked down by the Domain group policy.

Hi. I have been Googling this, but haven't been able to find the information I need. Maybe someone can help here?

I want the option to open a DVD/CD in Windows Explorer to show on the Autoplay option window that appears when I insert a disc into the drive. I am asked every time I put in a disc, which is what I want; the option is there in the configuration settings, but it doesn't appear in the autoplay window.. See screenshots.

I can remove the Open in Windows Media Player option if only four items will show (but how??)

A:Setting Autoplay options

I just discovered that if I insert a DVD-RW with video files on it, I get the above 'annoyance'. If the same DVD-RW has jpegs on it, I get a different autoplay window open, with different options (including 'Open with Windows Explorer)> I'd thought (clearly wrongly) the action was media dependent, not as to what was on the disc.

So how do I get the Windows Explorer option for a disc with .VOB files on it?

Thanks again.

Hi All,

I have had many problems since I installed Vista Ultimate, both major and minor. I have solved some and am still working on others. I won't try to adress them all now. The problem with folder view settings is one of the most aggravating, though not operationally significant. Still, it does CONSTANTLY Piss Me Off. Pardon my language, but it IS appropriately descriptive. Regardless of whatever settings I choose, the next time I go to that folder or any other, they have reverted to some set of system defaults, which I CAN'T CHANGE. Several I don't use and some I don't want or actually get in the way of what I want to do, such as "AutoArrange". (If I ever meet the person who invented "AutoArrange" I will probably be arrested for assault.)

I recently picked up a old HP psc 2510 photosmart all-in-one printer at a yard sale for 10 bucks in great condition. Problem is, it was missing all documentation and driver CD. Fortunately, HP included "in-OS" drivers for Win 7, so I was able to set it up over USB very easily. But now I'm trying to get it up and running with wireless printing, which it supports on XP, but isn't perfectly ported to 7.

Following the advice from the 4th comment on Re: HP PSC 2510 Photostmart drivers for WIndows 7 - Page 4 - HP Support Forum, I was able to connect to it via my wifi network when I plug an Ethernet cable into the printer.

Now, this works, but being a huge nerd, I think it'd be even better if I could set the printer up to be completely wireless. I'm not much of an expert on the finer workings of wireless connections, but I think it's possible to do this with an ad hoc netwrok. But I can't find any instructions for doing this on 7. Closest thing I found was this page with instructionsfor XP, which I was unable to follow on 7.

Since the printer has an on-screen option to enable or disable the "wireless radio" which can only be turned on when the ethernet cable is unplugged, I assume this functionality is to broadcast the "hpsetup" ad hoc network from the printer without it being connected to a router (since I don't think it can connect to an actual wifi network wirelessly; but if it can, it'd be great to know how to do that too!). But even when I do... Read more

A:Options for setting up a wireless printer

Instructions for creating an ad hoc network in Windows 7 can be found here:
Windows 7: How to Create an Ad Hoc Network | kombitz.com

I also wonder if maybe it has anything to do with encryption?
It seems that with the linkout you have provided with instructions
for setting this up in XP describes setting up WEP encryption connection
through the HP setup page. Wondering if the device you are making the
ethernet connection to is handing the printer an IP by checking that option in
the setup through Win7 (Automatically obtain IP address therefore it should) but check if the router is also using
WEP encyption which whilst reading the documentation seemed to be required for the printer.

Is that making sense! I'd start with that first

As I bought my laptop when I was living abroad, it has an American (I suppose) style keyboard, where (for example) the number keys 1 to 5 in Caps are marked (and produce the symbols) ! @ # $ %. Given that the laptop sits on the desk mostly, I find it a lot easier when doing emails or whatever to use a USB keyboard on my lap, but this has a UK layout, where the same keys in Caps are marked ! " ? $ % ... but produce the same symbols as the first example (laptop's own keyboard).

I don't suppose there is any way to get Windows to recognise the two different keyboard layouts, so that the USB one produces the symbols depicted on the keys? Can I remap it without affecting the laptop one? Can't work out how, if so.

Nobody ever knew how to permanently set folder options in all previous windows versions.

is it the same with windows 7

do we still have to change options on each folder that we need to?
each time we use that folder?

I haven't yet tried and I'm not touchin' folder options untill i see what you folks have to say.

I am sure I have seen this somewhere maybe on this site. I found the very detailed options of how to do each manually but this is something I need to be able to give people who are not knowledgeable in doing this on their own.
Unless there is a way to export and import a 'Sec-Pol' setting from one system to another , the registry option would probably be best. In windows 10, I have people who for some reason at times end up with their network showing PUBLIC when they are connected to the Office WiFi. Manually changing to Private usually works but it never stays that way.
Many of the shared resources on the office network are available to them only if they are on a Private network. To make it worse, on many of these laptops, even if they connect to the wired network it does not release the WiFi connection unless they completely disable that adapter.

I know this needs a better solution than a quick patch to set all to private but it is one of those 'gotta do it right this second' things which I need a way to do until I can get to their system to figure out what caused this in the first place.

Is there a general registry entry I can use to get them set to Private for all network connections as a "Quick-Cure"?

2) What is "QoS Packet Scheduler" ?

3) Is it safe to disable these options?

I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me out.

A:My Network Places -> View Network Connections -> Properties (Screenshot Inside)

Response to Q3:
1. No. Not if you want to have a LAN of Windows PCs.
2. Yes.

Plus if your want to share files and a printer on a LAN you'd need to enable FIle and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Hi. I have a problem with my wireless connection. The tab under network connections does NOT show wireless connection. This happened after I reinstalled winxp. I installed the wireless driver but it did not work. I can only connect to the internet using the wired connection. What should I do?

So guys, I have been having this problem for several days.
One day, I noticed that my wireless internet icon was gone from the taskbar.
I thought, that's easy, I'd set it to show from Network Connections.

However, when I went to Control Panel, Network Connections would not open, no hourglass or anything. Nothing.

So I went to services.msc, and sure enough, Network Connections was disabled. I set it to Manual and tried to start it. I got the error "Could not start Network Connections on Local Computer. 193: 0xc1."

This is bringing me down, because I've searched for an answer online for days, nothing worked.
I tried using regsvr32 to register netshell.dll, but I got the error "netshell.dll was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file cannot be registered."

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP 2.

I have scanned for viruses with avast! Home Edition, found nothing.

And very surprisingly, I still have internet. But I travel, so I need to choose my wireless networks, and this way, I can't. Thank you in advance for any help.

After using the RTM build for about a week with no issues, the option to open a folder in the same window when clicked, is no longer working properly.

Now, when clicked, all folders are opening up in a new window and this is very annoying! I havent changed any settings and the folder options are still set correctly. I have tried changing the folder options to see if it would change this behaviour but it did not. What is really strange is that this also happened on my first install of Vista RTM before reinstalling this copy, after about the same time of usage-about 1 week.

Has anybody ran into this or know what is happening? I havent installed any new hardware or software and I havent tried any repairs or recovery yet. I wanted to ask before I started poking around and making any changes in the OS.

A:Vista folder options setting issue

Try this link. It's really simple, the extra is just if the quick merge option doesn't work, it's safe also. I have used it twice, I need to do a reinstall. It fixed alot of my problems with folder options.

In access 2000 with my database opened, I clicked on the TOOLS menu > selected STARTUP.

In this window I removed checkmarks for
> Allow Full Menus
> Allow Default Shortcut Menus
> Allow Built-in Toolbars
> Allow Toolbar/Menu Changes
> Use Access Special Keys

This had the effect I was hoping for and made it more like an application.

The problem is i haven't finished the database and still need to work on it.

I need to get these tool bars back.

How do I get them back?.
Please help.

A:ms Access - Setting Startup Options ? how do I reverse

Does the old trick work?

Open Windows Explorer
navigate to the folder with your database in
hold down shift and double-click the icon

You should have Tools available for use again.

Some of this post was, I guess incorrectly posted under another topic:
The content of that post has been pasted here:
I have a Linux PC acting as a gateway/router for the Windows PC. Under normal conditions and when the Windows PC is not connected to the Linux PC there are various unsolicited incoming connection attempts.
Whenever I enable the NIC on the Windows PC, the unsolicited attempts increase significantly. There are no internet servicing applications running.
When a bittorrent or p2p application starts, specifically utorrent, there are attempts to connect via standard private IANA IP addresses.
That, I believe might be specific vulnerabilities in those particular applications but the attempt to connect when there are no internet soliciting applications running leads me to believe there is an infected executable acting as a server, perhaps a botnet.
I understand that there could be stragglers left over from previously open connections with these applications but I have turned off these services for at least 72 hours. The connections are not coming to the ports that I've reserved for those applications, they're coming into typically known vulnerable ports.
Whenever utorrent is running there are hundreds of non-stop DNS lookups, I don't remember this ever occurring before. Is this normal? It seems... Read more

A:registry error..lost wireless and dialup connections

It's a little difficult to understand your question without you being a bit more descriptive. What version of Windows are you running and what and make, model of your pc.

If XP, are you able to access System Restore?

I'm preparing a laptop for transfer to someone else and have deleted all my network accounts (wireless) in the Control Panel. But over in the Sys Tray, when I click on the network icon, my two connections are still listed (name and name-guest). How do I delete those? Win 7x64. Thanks,

A:Deleting my own network connections listings (sys tray network icon)

When you click on the network icon in the System Tray, it will always list all of the Available Wireless Networks in the area, including those of your neighbours if their signal is strong enough. However, if you've already deleted your own networks in Control Panel, the computer won't be able to connect to them again until the encryption key is re-entered.

Hi, I'm new to this so bear with me :/

I know there are a lot of forum posts on this on this forum and many others but after 8 hours of trawling through them and getting nowhere I thought I would make a thread with my specific problem and see if anyone can help.

I got my new graphics card yesterday, and after 4 hours of trying to get that to work, it's in and working but now I have a red cross where it says my internet is connected and when I click on it it says No Connections are available. I have a wired connection, and the ethernet cable is in (there is no light on my mobo to confirm this). When I troubleshoot it says:
Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter. If you have a network adapter you will need to reinstall the driver.

I have got my MOBO CD and attempted to do that but the gigabyte interface is completely missing and I can't find the network adapter on there. I have also tried downloading the new drivers, first on my laptop and running them on the PC but that had no success, and the second time through my Iphone personal hotspot but with the same results.

I know the ethernet cable works because I have put it in my laptop.

I have a Gigabyte H61MA-D3v Mobo
i5 2500K
8 GB Ram
GTX 770
Running Windows 7

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated because I'm close to putting my foot through my PC.

I am connected to the internet, but there is a red x on my network icon (yet when you hover over it, it says internet access.) I tried to go into the network and sharing > change adapter settings, yet the Network connections folder is COMPLETELY blank.

I tried reinstalling the driver. Initially, I get a message that says "the parameter is incorrect" Although, I tried to do it a second time, it said that the driver is up to date.

I dunno what else to do. I'd like to have access to my LAN connection. I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64.

A:Network Connections Blank - Red X on Network Icon- but Internet works

Well, after 3 hours of trying to find a solution, I immediately found it after creating this thread. Sorry!!!

Anyway, the solution was to open the registry editor, go to: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network" and delete the “Config” value. I restarted my computer, and all was well.

Still wondering: why did this happen in the first place?
