How to add second hard drive to ThinkCentre M910z All-in-one?

Q: How to add second hard drive to ThinkCentre M910z All-in-one?

I am trying to figure out how to add a second hard drive to my new ThinkCentre M910z All-in-one. I have only been able to find instructions on removing or replacing the existing first hard drive, but not how to add a second hard drive. I have bought a 500GB 7200rpm 2.5? 6Gbps SATA Hard Drive (4XB0M60786) to install. This drive also did not come with a storage cable. Please point me to instructions on how to install it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an older Lenovo all-in-one that's reaching the end of it's tolerable life. It's slow, limited upgrades, only supports one small hard drive. But I love the all-in-one form factor. I see the newer iteration ThinkCentre M910z supports SSD for the primary (horrah!) and includes a second 2.5" hard drive bay. What I can't find is what the largest supported storage size is. Can it support a 4TB-5TB drive like the Seagate BarraCuda ST4000 and ST4000? My goal is to have a SSD for OS and apps, big 2nd drive for archiving large video as opposed to having to have an external USB drive perpetually tethered like with my current all-in-one.

Hi, I am currently trying to deploy a TC M910z via PXE. It seems that PXE boot is only available in legacy mode but I would prefer UEFI PXE boot. Hey,  So i have 28 stores and they are all using the Thinkcentre M93P ( i3) small form factor desktops. ( they are running a SQL DB ) They are all plugged into the battery backup of brand new APC 725 UPS's.   My issues is sometimes when the store loose's power, the PC powers back up but then says no OS found. And then a disk read error occured. When they ship me the PC, I hear a faint  BEEP, BEEP and I have determined it's the hard drive. Do anyone else have this issue, as of right now I find these units not very tolerable to power loss and I have to keep replacing the drives in the PC's.  anyone have any ideas on how i can possibley prevent this from happening? I looked in the newest BIOS update and I don't see anything in there refrencing the issue im having. ( i believe this is 4 possibly 5 now that i'm after replacing the hard drive in )  ThanksMark

Dear colleaguesI have obtained one of these tower systems and proceeded to open it up and the first thing I did was to remove the 160gb SATA hard drive .Foolishly I then took out the caddy (or, as I think it is called the Chassis) in which the hard drive was contained. The problem is that I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the chassis back in place. The fan that is over the processer just seems to get in the way. It came out but it won't go back. I wonder if anyone can advise what is the procedure to get it in. Do I have to remove the fan first, or do I have to remove the PSU.I know this is a simple problem but I an not an expert if anyone can advise I will be gratefulThanks, Ian

I have a Lenovo ThinkCentre tower with one hard drive and I have bought an extre SATA drive.
There is an extra set of connectors which plug in ok.
The thing is I have an OS on the original and was able to install a Fedora os on the other with the original disconnected.
Wondering if there could be a jumper to let number 2 drive be recognized (without the drive A unplugged)
As far as I can tell the motherboard is: L-IQ35 Rev 1.0 Core Duo etc.

Hi all, I am in need of installing a second disk drive for my ThinkCentre E53 10AS. I read the manual, which has instructions on replacing the disk drive - it does mention that in order to install a second disk drive, to follow these same instructions! Of course, it would not be an identical process. For example, there are 3 SATA plugs on the mother board, SATA1, SATA2 (both red), and SATA3 (yellow). SATA1 is plugged into the HDD.

There is a box connected to the power button, that has two buttons on the back. SATA power and SATA data. The SATA power is connected to the HDD and the motherboard via a 4-wire cable. The SATA data is connected to the HDD via a ribbon SATA cable.

So, if I want to install a second HDD, do I use a SATA plug to connect it to the yellow SATA 3 plug?

Does the fact that the plug is yellow mean anything?

And finally, I have looked everywhere, but cannot figure out what the max HDD capacity would be for a secondary drive? I bought a WD Red 3TB. Hopeful it works?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

A:ThinkCentre (E53): need to install as secondary hard disk drive

According to the hardware maintenance manual for the E73, the two motherboard SATA connectors (which you say are red) are SATA3 which supports 6GB/s.  The third one (which you say is yellow) is SATA2 which supports 3GB/s.

Sinc you've bought a SATA3 drive, you should use the second red SATA3 connector to get maximum performance out of it.  Be sure you use a SATA3 data cable and not a SATA2 data cable, as that's part of the requirement to get SATA3 performance.

As far as drive capacity goes, there's no hardware limit pertaining to your E73.  However there IS a consideration depending on the fact that your drive is larger than 2TB.  In order for a new drive to be usable, it must be "partitioned" and "formatted with a file system".  And in order to use a drive larger than 2TB the partitioning technique must be GPT, and not MBR.

You can partition the new drive to have one or more partitions, but if you mistakenly use MBR as the partitioning technique only 2TB of the drive will be visible and usable for partitions.  And there will be a maximum of four "primary" partitions (or a maximum of three "primary" partitions and any number of "logical" partitions).  The extra 1TB of your new 3TB drive will be invisible and unusable.  And the largest MBR partition is also limited to 2TB.

In contrast, if you partition the drive using GPT (which is the modern partitioning method that is recommended), this method supports drives... Read more

Having a hard time finding a part number for the secondary hard drive cage.  This would be the cage that is L-shaped and attaches to the base of the tower.  For now I was able to put the 2nd hard drive in the card reader bay, but would prefer to mount as designed as I'm concerned with the heat associated with one hard drive mounted directly about the other.thanksjoe

A:ThinkCentre Tiny: add 2nd HDD, increase size of external HDD, 500GB Hard Drive Adapter (0A65638)

The Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny 500GB Hard Drive Adapter Kit  (about 100  bucks) can only be used in the the ThinkCentre Tiny Storage Unit Kit which is an external drive enclosure that must be purchased separately (about 40 bucks) that will accept a CD/DVD drive, or a hard drive caddy ( the Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny 500GB Hard Drive Adapter Kit).    I would imagine you could replace the 500G  2.5 inch SATA drive that comes with the Adapter kit/caddy for a larger drive, but if you goal is to just add an external HD, It would probably be easier (and cheaper) to just buy an external USB hard drive like this one. WD - My Passport 2TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive  ($79.99 for 2TB up to 119.99 for 4TB)http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-my-passport-2tb-external-usb-3-0-portable-hard-drive-black/5605528.p?... Cheers,

We are experiencing a high volume of failed drives within our fleet of M83 10AM Lenovo ThinkCentre systems. When the customer (end user) calls our support team and we show up, the drive is not seen in the BIOS nor is the drive accessible when docked with an external drive enclosure. Attached is the picture of the drive that we have been replacing. These systems have been deployed within 1 year. I have the same system as my primary desktop and it's always on with no problems. Could we have a bad batch of computers with these hard drives?

What do I need to install harddisks into these drive bays? Do I need some special part to install harddisks into the drive bays? Any help is much appreciated.

This forum was a tremendous help to me when my laptop had serious problems after 2 years. Long story that I won't repeat.

I now own a Lenovo M53 Thinkcentre Desktop (I couldn't help laughing when I opened the box and saw it's actual size). I'm so used to desktops having a CD drive that it completely slipped by me that the M53 does not have one. I learned from this forum about covers for hard drives to use them externally and bought one for the HD that I removed from my laptop. I also removed the CD drive and was told by Lenovo that the CD drive does not require a cover, I would just connect it via usb.

There is no usb port on this drive, so how would I connect it to my M53 so I can install my software? Thank you. Jane

I have an M910z.  It is working fine except for a worry I have about a possible defective USB port whcih seems to be frying my USB devices.

To date:
? 3 USB trackball mice have stopped working (do not light up and no longer recognized)? 1 Microsoft LifeCam (does not light up and no longer recognized)
? 1 USB hub (does not light up)

I have tried to use these devices on other computers and they no longer work.

My questions:
? Is it possible that a defective USB port could fry such devices?
? I do not know which USB port is causing the suspected problem, so how I do I test the USB ports to determine which one is causing the problem?
? Any suggested solutions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

I recently used my system image disk to restore on a new (larger) hard drive but now when I look at the hard drive from the computer view it shows my hard drive as being the same size as the old one instead of being the size of the new one. I'm not sure
I'm making much sense so I will post a picture...

Is there anyway to fix this? Does the drive really only have 286 gigs on it?

A:System Image disks installed on new hard drive show new hard drive same size as old one

You have to be logged in as Admin to perform these operations.
Go to Start, and in the Search box, type in DISK MANAGEMENT. Pick the Control Panel item "Create and format disk partitions." Once Disk Management comes up, right-click on the area of your disk and select "Extend volume..." Move it out
as far as you want, making the whole thing one drive.
If that doesn't work for you, then you can download Easeus Partition Manager Home
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  and create a boot CD from it that will accomplish the same thing (and more, if you want to read up on it). It's a free program and works
with 32- and 64-bit Windows. I like it and use it myself.

Hard drive #1:
Just a few weeks ago my hard drive started clicking and suddenly my system froze. The drive wasn't dropped, bumped, or anything like that. It was fairly new as well. I was having some issues accessing my files AND I couldn't access the internet through any browsers. I was connected, could play internet-using games, but got no reply from websites. I decided to reformat. Well, that didn't go so well. Reformatting did not fix the freezing issue nor did it fix the internet issue. A:Multiple hard drive boot errors, hard drive clicking, and freezing

Try installing another operating system onto the disk and seeing if that crashes as well. If it doesn't you probably have a bad Windows cd. I suggest trying Kubuntu, a version of Linux meant to look somewhat like Windows (You can click here to skip directly to the download page). Just remember to actually install the thing. Most Linux operating systems can be ran directly from the cd without any need to be installed onto a hard disk. There's usually a program on the desktop that will install the system for you. If it runs properly for a week or two, get a new Windows disk. If it crashes just as much as Windows did, get a new computer.

Also, how much RAM does your computer have? If it's very low (256-512 megs or less) it can sometimes cause these kinds of crashes too.
