Problem with activating Windows

Q: Problem with activating Windows

Hello All,
Here is my dilemma with activating Windows:
I activated Windows xp about a month ago but just recently it said I have to activate it again.
But each time I click "okay" to activate it again, it takes me to the blank windows desktop of mine and I get a message saying "Windows is already activated" and it kicks me to the log in screen where it gives me the notification to activate windows, again. And when I click "okay" (again), the same thing repeats.
I am stuck in this eternal loop.
I am using a MacBook Pro 15 inch using BootCamp to use windows if that information helps at all.

In advance, thanks for the help

Reinstalling is not an option for me because I am on vacation and I left the installation CD behind.

Preferred Solution: Problem with activating Windows

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, To use Boot Camp you must use a valid Windows Product Key, that is, one that has not been installed before you put it on the Mac

Valid means a Product Key that has not been activated at any other time.....unless, it was the full Retail version, in that case, you can install it on successive locations, using it on one at a time.

Where did the copy and Product Key come from that you are trying to use? , It sounds like the computer is using the 30 day grace period allowed if you do not Activate Windows at the time of installing.

Hi everyone
I am having a weird problem . Today i was installing windows 7 professional . I have the MSDN academic licensce key .After installing OS i connected to Internet to activate it online . When i tried to enter my key . I got an error -- unacceptable character
--Please check your product key  and try again . when i tried a number of times i still got the same error . The weird thing is I found that the key made of all characters except " a,e,i,l,n,o,u,s,z " is accepted but the error is only for these characters
. Even if the first chracter i enter is happens to be one of these I get the same error ..Cant understand why it is happening ...? It is my first installation with this key which i got from my college. Any help Please...
Thanks in advance

Like you noticed youself, the characters you specified are indeed not used in license keys. If those characters are present in your license key, you should consult with the source you got them from.

I'm trying to fix my Dad's laptop here and having some problems. His hard drive died on him, so I replaced it. The computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit on it. Thats also the only OS Sony's website has drivers for, that OS. It actually has Windows XP drivers as well. The sticker on the bottom is rubbed off almost completely, I can hardly read the code but I think I got it. Now most Windows 7 Product keys on new PC's are blue and white the label itself that is. This one looks like it's a Windows Vista or maybe XP? The laptop was bought a year ago, so I couldn't imagine it being XP. It also has a windows 7 sticker on it. Well I installed Windows 7 and the product key didnt work, I tried it changing all the letters I wasn't sure of, couldn't gt it. Installed Vista, but I cant find drivers for it at all. The thing that gets me, it does not look like a Windows 7 key label at all unless older ones came in blue green and red like Vista's and XP.

Any help/advice would be great.

Last night around 2:00 AM my Hard drive crashed, so Today I get reinstall everything on my Hard drive. I normally dual boot Windows XP and a Distribution of Linux so I started by partitioning my Hard drive and Installing Windows XP. I Have had this copy of Windows XP for a long time now and refuse to upgrade to Windows Vista.

So once it's done installing on the partition I made for it I download some N'vidia drivers and Firefox, then I was going to activate Windows. So I clicked on the Activate Windows option in the Start menu and and began to activate Windows over the internet untill I got this message:

"According to our records, the number of times you can activate Windows with this product key has been exceeded etc..."

So I went to google and began to search for a work around, I found that if I activate over the phone Microsoft will sort it out and I can activate Windows. I proceeded to the activate Windows over the phone option and was givin two numbers to call. The first number was out of service and the second number just gave me a busy signal. I then went to Microsoft's website to search for a number to call, I found one but it cost's $60.00 to speak with a CSR.

I have a totally legal copy of Windows XP, and I am not paying $60.00 so that I can use something I already paid for!

I then went back to google and found another way, that involves editing the registry. While I am familiar with editing the registry I don't know if this i... Read more

Microsoft gives those possibilities for a 0xC004C008 Error

Your computer's hardware has been changed.
Windows 7 was reinstalled on the same computer.
Your Windows 7* product key was transferred from another computer.
The *Windows 7 product key that you're trying to use has already been used on the maximum number of computers that your license allows.

In your case I would suspect the last one.

Hi, I bought two refurbished Siemens Fujitsu lifebook about a year ago. They both have windows seven but one has since upgraded to windows 10. About four months ago
one of them start getting a pop-up saying you may be a victim of software counterfeit. It asked for my product key, as it is a refurbished laptop it wasn't on the machine. So after a while of trying to figure out my product key I got it. I entered it and  it
said "A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate. Error Code OxCOO4FO74, For a possible resolution, click More Information. ". When I clicked More Information it said this
?Code OxCOO4FO74 Description: The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated, No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. Please see the
Application Event Log for additional information. ? I have tryed a million times and this is all that comes up. I have looked up this error code but to no avail.
I don't believe the software is counterfeit as I bought two at the same time
and one is running perfectly.  Please help me find a solution to this as every hour I get an annoying pop-up that resets all my settings(homescreen, background etc.)
If any other information is needed I will be glad to give it.

angelique01,

Assuming you are connected to the Internet, the activation server may be down for maintenance or overloaded, consequently, the activation agent on your computer is unable to make a connection with the activation server.

Try again. You have 30 days to activate, and after that you will not be able to use your computer without activating. If this happens, you can contact a Microsoft Customer Service Representative to do the activation. I'm not sure, but assume you will need to have the Windows XP Certificate of Authenticity label which is a little sticker on the outside of your PC or stuck to the back of Start Here (blue on front) booklet from the outfit that constructed your PC. There is a number (where n is a decimal digit) in ther format of: nnnnn-nnn-nnn-nnn on the sticker. The CoA label identifies in bold the Windows OS version, e.g. mine says Windows XP Professional for my WinXP Pro SP2 system.

What operating system does the Microsoft sticker on the computer indicate?

Brand-new, first time visitor here. I just took a look at a similar recent thread, but the poster said his (or her) copy of Windows 7 was 'from a friend.' My problem: my geek son (who built my original computer and lives more than 200 miles away) recently did an overhaul on my computer, which was then running Windows XP) to clean it out, upgrade some things, yadda yadda. Once back home, the problems began...my son realized that because he'd installed a new motherboard, XP wasn't recognizing it (I'm probably using the wrong words to describe this - plus this is now a 1.5 month old problem and my brain is broken). His suggestion was that we upgrade to Windows 7. I bought a copy at the local WalMart, took the computer back to him and he installed.

It seemed to run ok when he started it up. But not once I got back home...I've entered the product key, but the system simiply will not recognize it as genuine. Hello,

I just got this Windows 7 Enterprise edition from my brother who studies at an university. The problem is it only lasts for 30 days and if i try to activate it online it gives this error:

Description:

DNS name does not exist.

I'm using an wireless card called Canyon CN-WF511 802.11g Turbo Wireless PCI Card. The problem could be that it hasn't got the right drivers for windows 7 yet, cause i was only able to download and install the drivers from the official site for Windows Vista..

I also tried the calling activation procedure but the automatic phone said that they couldn't verify the code i gave up, but i don't want to contact with the support cause i dont have a good reason to let them activate it..

So im not sure if it does work, but at least i want to give it a try to activate if via internet.

A:Problem activating Windows 7 Enterprise

When you attempt to activate an enterprise version of Windows Vista or Windows 7...it does a DNS search trying to find the network's KMS (key management server) to activate against. In your case, you likely aren't on a local network with a KMS server so that activation mechanism is not an option.

Therefore, you need to get a MAK key (multiple activation key). Then, when you go to activate Windows 7..you click on change product key and input the MAK key. It will then validate the key and immediately attempt to activate it on the Internet.

You have an OEM_SLP Product Key from an ACER machine on a DELL computer - which can never legally work anyhow - built almost two years before windows 7 was released.

please post your comments if you know what's going on with my PC. thanks

A:Problem when activating SLI

SLI has a couple of caveats:
1. You can not run dual monitors with SLI activated. If you're running dual monitors then you ned to turn one off.
2. You must have the monitor plugged into the video card installed in slot 1, only, when SLI is enabled. This is also the single card slot and is the one closest to the CPU.
3. If you have different BIOS in the cards then you must run the latest Nvidia Drivers.

Hope this helps

Most laptops do not have to be activated if they came with windows 7 pre-installed on them.
If you installed windows on your laptop from another disk, then you could be mis reading the activation codes.

You might want to try your laptop manufacturer for the correct code if yours is incorrect.

How can i get my windows to activate please?
In summary how do I get activation to understand I am using ultimate 64 bit version and I have the home premium key and the ultimate upgrade key?

A:Problem activating ultimate upgrade 64 bit

You MUST do upgrades from an installed, validated, OS - it's this that the system relies upon to check qualifications, not a previous Key.
You will probably have to reinstall the Home Premium and upgrade properly (i.e. follow the instructions).

You may however, try telephone activation - if you can persude the operator that the install is legitimate, then they can issue an override.

telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you

Hey guys,

Recently I have upgraded to win10 and this problem wasn't a thing in my win7 PC. The problem is that (sometimes in obviously easy actions for the computer) it freezes, doing nothing and then the screen says: An error have occured, application must close: TDR. It keeps happening every 30 minutes or so, when gaming as well as browsing. The thing that drives me mad is that the computer is doing nothing during the time of freeze and restart. I was (by tutorials) in my registers, and upped the restart time from 2 to 10 secconds, and it didn't do a thing. only longer pause before restart of the graphic card. Any solutions?

Hello

I just recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit as my second OS. I didn't want to upgrade Vista if there was any problems during installation and it seems I was right. First problem I had was installation didn't want to complete. The computer shutdown right after the first reboot. That I got solved by disabling USB and all integrated devices from the BIOS. Installation went fine after that. Everything went fine from then on until I re-activated everything from the BIOS. After that it goes like this: Windows 7 starts to the desktop and installs drivers for a few seconds and then shuts down. And re-starts and keeps doing it over and over. I disabled my integrated devices and then it stabilized.

The problems seem to be with my integrated devices. My BIOS is up to date and everything else seems to be up to date also. It would be nice to use all the devices I have on my computer. No sound and network sucks.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.
My motherboard is an ASUS P5E and I tested the compatibility with MS own Win 7 tester and no problems were found.

The setting is to boot over a network, I would just change it back and you should be fine.'

I don't recall any LAN settings in a BIOS you would need to change.

Please help, I've posted on 2 other forums but no replies and tearing my hair out! Post copied below from other forum:

"""Post 1:
Very quick background, I built a new PC a few months ago. It is running 32bit XP Pro, I have a RAID 0 which my OS and Programs are on, a RAID 1 that my files/data are kept on, and a backup HD that I just keep whacking backups over to.

The problem started a few weeks ago, when Adobe Acrobat started having weird launch problems, to the point where I ended up deleting it, as the only part of Creative Suite CS4 that I don't really use as of now. I can't 100% remember the error, as figured I'd come back to it at a later date.

Next thing to happen, a week or so later, was that iTunes stops working after every turn off / turn on, or restart. i.e. iTunes is set up, all updated and working fine, until I turn my computer off. When I turn it back on again it hunts for some setup file, then says it can't find it, and refuses to open. I have to delete iTunes via Add/Remove, then install it again. At this point, on first opening it, all my music and settings are there fine, but once it's been turned off again same problem. This is a real pain in the *** even more so than usual as I have an iPhone now, so backing up is taking a while each week!

Finally (I think), Office is doing a similar thing - it has been installed since first building the PC and working fine, but now each time I open any Office program aft... Read more

Basically I have having this problem on both computers I want to share. When i type in the ip of the pc I want to connect to, I get the following error:

Then when i press Diagnose I am prompted with the following error message:

So I thought it had something to do with file and printer sharing not being enabled, but when i try to enable it, i get 'RPC Server Unavailable" as below:

***********************************
After searching the net for ages (it seemed like), I have not been able to find a solid solution, I have been told to make sure RPC server is running, which it is, Net TCP/IP helper is running, and when i ping the IP address of the computer, it does comeback with a result, so i know the computer can see it. I am thinking it has something to do with the firewall (which i should mention, i have tried with e firewall enabled, and disabled).

Can anyone shed some light on what could be wrong?

Thanks,
Kaashif

Ok, here is some more information, when i try to star the net share, by excuting the command "NET SHARE" in dos, I get the following error:
The Server service is not started
Is it OK to start it? (Y/N) [Y]: y

Does this mean anything to anyone?

I bought a new laptop without an OS. I purchased and installed Windows8. I bought a Windows 8 Pro key, and whenever I try to activate it, it says I need a previous version of Windows in order to activate it. Any ideas on how to activate it w/out installing another OS. Note: I am willing to purchase another key so that I do not have to reinstall Windows.

A:Windows 8 not activating

If you have a valid Win 8 installation and a valid Win 8 Pro Upgrade license key then follow this tutorial and you should be good to go:

I changed a few settings in my BIOS (Aperture size form 128 to 256, AGP fast write off) and now I have to activate windows. I lost my key years ago along with the disc. Is there any way to activate windows or find out what my key is?

Also my computer is artifacting, and the heatsink on my graphics card is real hot. I have no idea why, it is factory overclocked so that might have something to do with it. It usually artifacts when I am playing games, which are usually set at or below the recommended settings. I have a BFG Tech 6800.

So i clicked on activate by phone, and it doesn't say any #s. It says "Toll free #: (blank)". So I can't get a phone #. Anyone know a site for the #s for activation? The #s are based on location. I just solved a huge issue with windows 7 installation Freezing before it finished...

Now I am having a issue Activating it Windows 7 Home Premium on this HP G61

Due to the fact that the tag on the bottom of the laptop is worn and unreadable in parts, before I re-installed windows, I used a Product Key Grabber to grab what I thought was my windows key...
(This turned out to be a key registered to an ASUS laptop)

So now I have a fresh installation that needs activation and a half-unreadable product key.

I've read that you can call Microsoft support to activate over the phone, so I called them...
they told me I would have to call HP to get it, since Windows was preloaded on the machine when it was purchased...
So I called HP, after like 15 of trying to understand the lady who was asking random questions, she tells me that I have to purchase an extended warranty for them to read the product key to me, WHICH IS RIDICULOUS.

So my question is, what the hell do I do with this now?
Any advice would be appreciated.

A:Activating Windows 7

Not too sure, but it's either buy an extended warranty or buy Windows 7 and use that product key.

But, don't quote me, just guessing here.

So my friend was using my computer (which did not have a 'genuine' windows, this is another problem) and he downloaded and installed some kind of software on my computer which was supposed to activate my windows. But a couple days later, when i turn on my computer it boots up normally up to the part where it is supposed to connect to the wifi. There is a spinning wheel above the wifi symbol, the security essentials is turned off and nothing i click on does anything. I tried to restored to a previous restore and nothing doing. I tried to removed the hackware in safemode, but the removed button becomes faded and nothing happens. I tried the repair system and again nothing. This sounds like the end of my hard drive. What do I do?

A:Activating windows

I do not know what your friend did but you do not need to download software to activate Windows. Those who do are typically attempting to use some type of crack or keygen program to circumvent Windows activation which is not only illegal but a security risk. I recommend that software be removed and you contact Microsoft if you are receiving messages about not having genuine windows.Microsoft maintains multiple Product Activation Centers worldwide to provide assistant and telephone support for activation issues. I got my Samsung Series 9 repaired and, as a result of some component changes, Windows 8 is no longer activated. Can I use a copy of Windows 8 Pro (which is intended to allow Windows 7, Vista and XP users to upgrade to Windows 8) to activate Windows 8? In other words, will the product key of an upgrade package allow me activate Windows 8, despite it not being an upgrade (my computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed).

A:Activating Windows 8

In this case your first point of contact should be Samsung Support, if you contact them and explain the situation they should organise activation of the pre-installed OS. Microsoft may be an option though pre-installed OS is officially the responsibility of the OEM.

It may be possible to "upgrade" using a retail copy of pro, but then of course you would lose the use of the pre-installed copy that you have already paid for

A:Activating windows xp

Yes you will need to purchase a license. Normally, licenses are not transferable to a new motherboard - unless the new motherboard is virtually identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.) to the one on which the WinXP installation was originally performed.

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio SVE15113ENB laptop. It had windows 7 before but last month I purchased Windows 8.1 upgrade key. But instead of upgrading I downloaded the iso and then did a clean install. I don?t know if the problem is only with sony vaio?s that if you dont follow the proper procedure not all driver install properly. The same has happened with me. The sound driver is installed but does very feeble sound. As the vaio has this xLoud volume booster, it hasnt installed properly. So my question is whether I could use the windows 8.1 key I purchased to install windows 8.

Hope to hear from the experts here.

Thank you

A:Activating Windows 8

If you want to downgrade to Windows 8.0. then no, the 8.1 key will not work.

Unless there is compelling evidence that the 8.0 drivers work better, perhaps it would be better try re-installing various driver versions, if not the the OS itself.

I was given this Sony Viao (VGN- FW373J) laptop. It originally had Vista on it, then windows 7 Ultimate was installed (not sure if upgraded or clean install). I wanted to install 10 on it so I did but I did the clean install....going off information stating that I could do a clean install and using the windows 7 Ultimate key would work and activate it. It doesn't....I get the error message that: "this device doesn't have a valid digital entitlement or product key. Error code: 0x803F7001"

It didn't come with any of the rescue discs and when trying to make them....message said that they had already been made. Which was really weird. So what do I do now?

Well, since the free upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 has expired, looks like you will have to purchase a license for Windows for it.

Just curious, though, did you install Windows 10 Pro?

Here's my situation:

Today I reinstalled windows because it was giving me problems, reinstalled some programs, recovered backed up documents etc. However, I still need to activate windows, but I can't. The product ID shown in my "System" panel is "invalid for activation," and when I try to change it, I cant do that either. I cant change it because (and I forgot to mention, I made this computer so its an OEM version of Vista) the product ID on the sticker that is supposed to go on your case is no longer valid because when I got a new motherboard, I had to call to activate windows. So I guess the question is, who do I call to get a new product ID, and what information do I need to tell them?
Sorry for the longish post but thank in advance

Two problems really.

1. Maybe I've never noticed it before but all of a sudden I keep seeing the popup for windows 8 activating again. Just seems strange that it would be trying to activate again even though it shows activated on 6/23/2013.

2. This problem is a little different. Different computer but activation problems again. My laptop for some reason last week kept asking me to reactivate over and over again. It would say successful and then I would go look and it was needing activation when I checked. It did this 4 or 5 times and it currently says activated. This one says activated 2/19/2013

These are both Windows 8 Enterprise from my MSDN.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Josh

A:Windows 8 seems to be activating over and over

For each computer....

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window (in Start, type 'Command' - a Command Prompt icon will appear, right-click on it, and select Run as Administrator)
At the Prompt, type

Licensingdiag.exe -report %userprofile%\desktop\report.txt -log %userprofile%\desktop\repfiles.cab

(note the spaces!)
two files will be put on your desktop -
open the 'report.txt' file in Notepad, and copy/paste the results to your response - you can ignore the repfiles.cab file for the moment, as it's only backup data

I have problem , I have 2 copies of Windows XP and recently have tried to update my Windows ME computer to XP I basically was having trouble with ME and wanted to have all three PCs on the same network using the same OS.

After wasting so many hours trying to get into Dos in Windows ME, I finally figured out how to format it and now I have installed Windows Xp. Everything went pretty smooth until I get to the Activation Screen.

I know have 30 days but I want to have this thing working now once and for all. I have tried to activate it over the phone but the automated system rejects the product key. I tried activating over the net and they tell me the same thing.

The product Key came with the disc. I am in the process of calling Microsoft but I was wondering if anyone knew what could be the problem here?

A:Activating Windows Xp

Do I understand that you have 2 copies of XP, but they are installed on 3 PC's?

Can't do that, every PC must have it's own licenced copy. It cannot be installed on more than one PC (or it fails activation).

However that may not be what you actually mean, it's hard to interpret exactly.

But if its a new, unused copy of XP that is failing activation then a phone call is needed.

I am having a tad bit of a problem with computer, after a bit of hardware upgrades, I noticed that my Windows is no longer activated. And because I got the free upgrade from windows 7 to 10 with the whole update thingy, everything was dandy until now. I am not able to activate it, even though it says on my profile that I have Windows 10 pro on their website, but on my own settings, it says it unactive. So I rather not buy a new windows when I had one that worked before all this...and changing it back wont help any either now.

And here is my secondary question: Not having an activated windows, will this have an impact on how my computer handles programs? Because..it seemingly is!

My games are running smoother..ish...but it really acts up really quick with lag spikes and what not, even though my games are running smoother, and nothing was bad before the hardware upgrade.

PS: I have tried doing what Windows recommend doing when you have had a hardware change:
Settings -> Updates and Securtity -> Activate -> Troubleshoot -> I recently changed hardware on this machine -> (Opens up new window, Microsoft account) -> Reactivate Windows 10 (which finds my computer), and I click, this is the device I'm using -> Unable to acticate Windows, We can't reactive windows on this device. Try again later. You can also activate this device by going to the store andpurchasing a genuine copy of windows.

But technically...I allready had a genuine copy trough t... Read more

Hi People

I recently installed a new motherboard and I had to perform a repair install of Windows XP. Now I have to re-activate Windows. I am reminded of this every time I Reboot. However when I click Activate Windows my pc stops at the desktop wallpaper before the icons and taskbar show up. And it stays there and stays there forever until I reboot again.

If I click NO to 'do I want to activate Windows' and click the Windows Star at the bottom right of my taskbar I am directed to a webpage that tells me my copy of windows is not genuine.

I got my copy of Windows directly from Microsoft. I know for a fact it is genuine. So how can I fix this?

When I perform the operation below I don't have an 'activate windows' button on my copy of windows xp. Its not in accessories or anywhere.

Click Start.
Point to All Programs.
Click Activate Windows.

XP checks for "points" on bootup and it looks at the hardware and CPU, and everything until it adds up 7 points. Then it boots. Anything less is a re-activate. You said you updated firmware for your ROMS. That may in effect make XP think the drives had changed. Normally, one drive at a time, nothing happens, but when you make 2 or more hardware changes, the XP wants to know why. Activation over the phone is easy. Just tell the person what you have done and they will give you an ungodly long number to enter. Like 42 digits. Nothing to it. Took me less than 3 minutes to do.
