Microsoft Word or Excel file hangs when being opened from a shared location

Q: Microsoft Word or Excel file hangs when being opened from a shared location

Hi all,

Windows Server 2003 SP2 - is sharing a folder, and the client PC's that are opening files on LAN.

There are 5 PC's 3 with Windows XP, one uses Windows 7 and another one Windows Vista, the problem is detected only on the XP machines. When users try to open a Word or Excel file it hangs, other files are opened instantly (*.pdf, *.exe...). They use Microsoft Office 2007.

What could be the problem ? Why Office files are freezing when being opened from a shared map ?

Please help me solve this issue, thank you in advance.

P.S.: I removed the "Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in" still the issue persists.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having a goofy problem with .doc and .xls files. If I attempt to open them from either Windows Explorer or My computer, I get the "This file is already open" error but then you can then change the file and save it.
However, I can then execute the application and open the file from within the app, it works fine and doesn't give the error.
Any help would be appreciated. I have found traces of this error on the internet but have not found any satisfactory solutions to it. Thanks

Hi, I did a fresh installation of Linux Mint 17.1 and I also installed MS Word/Excel/PPT 2010. Everything works fine in Linux, however, when I try to open from Linux any shared Word document on W7, Word launches as 'Document 1' blank. All the other shared documents, like, Pdf, pictures, videos etc. work fine when launched from Linux on W7. I experience the same issue with Excel and PPT I have no idea why, has anybody experienced this? Thanks Alex

You'd probably have better luck on a linux forum. Can you open Excel files? It could be an Office-Linuxdistro issue.

Hello,

I've been using this site in the past while looking for fixes to various problems, recently registered and tried to help a little in my free time but now I am facing rather a big problem with which I am not sure what to do.

Firstly,
Please excuse me if you will deem it as a waste of time as I found few general ideas on how to go about fixing it:
http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/1007467-excel-2003-wont-open-some.html post #9

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2570623

I am posting as I'm not sure that those fixes will work and I have 4 users from Finance Departament at a finance year end who desperately need to fix the problem.
What happens is, they have have a spreadsheet (.xls) on a shared network drive which is crashing upon opening if sharing is turned on. If sharing is disabled one person can work on a document.
2 users have Office 2007, other 2 use Office 2003. 3 of them are facing this problem, one with 2007 and two with 2003.

I am really clueless and would appreciate any troubleshooting ideas and/or potential fixes.
For the time being I'm off to remove KB2502786 and kb2541025 updates from user's machines (I they are on) and will post results. Hopefully I will get some replies in the meantime

Thanks for all the help in advance

Hi guys, I just started my first job last week and my boss has a problem which noone in the office has been able to solve, if I can solve it, I would undoubtedly make a very good impression, no?

Now, he has w2k installed on his laptop (formatted NTFS), with a network share (also NTFS) on a 2000 or NT4 server - I'm not sure which. When he opens an Excel document that is saved on the share, Excel opens but the screen stays white and he has to end the process. When he opens the file again it works just fine and the document opens.

They first tried reinstalling Excel, then Office, and then they formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows, so it can't be the software or the OS on his machine.

If anyone has come across this or a similar problem, or has ANY ideas, please let me know, it would be so much fun if the new blonde girl can show 'em all

So when i open any file like a PDF or something, it's automatically opened as an excel document when i want it to be word. I've already tried setting word as a default app but it still doesn't work.
Also, i tried going to the downloaded files and pressed 'open documents like this with word from now on' but afterwards when i open that same file it still opens in excel. Can someone please help me, i have to print stuff for school but I can't because of this.

A:All my files are opened as excel instead of word

Well you can Print in the interim. Instead of pushing a file to an application via its File Association, you can always open the Application and then open the document and print it.

So if you try to open a PDF, DOC, DOCx, and others they are all associated to MS Excel ?

Did you Right-Click on a PDF file and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF viewer you use ) ?

likewise...

Did you Right-Click on a DOC and DOCx files and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Microsoft Word ?

Additionally...
Did you go to Control Panel and use the Default Programs applet and then choose "Set your Default Program" and then choose the Program like Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word and have it "Set this program as default" ?

Hi,

Recently, I'm having slow file loading while opening ms word files and excel files directly from windows explorer. It takes a minute to load, however it opens immediately if I open .doc files or .xls files directly from their application software. It also take a minute for MS Word and Excel software to shut down.

I have run my antivirus (Symantec) and MBAM but they all show no virus was found. I'm not sure what should I do next, please advice.

Q: Has anyone seen this problem and is there a patch or setting for Word XP that fixes it?

We have a document created in Word 97 with an embedded Excel Spreadhseet object displaying a chart.

When we open the document in Word 97, everything is normal.

When we open the document in Word XP the chart is rotated 180 degrees around the vertical axis. The chart is right side up, but the left side of the chart is on the right and all the letters are reversed.

When I double-click the object to edit it the chart flips around to normal. When I exit edit mode (without making any changes) it flips back.

When we convert the Excel Worksheet object to an Excel Chart object in Word 97, save the file, and open in Word XP the chart displays normally.

The problem is that we have an automated PDF converter that uses Word XP, so when we create the PDF, it is created with the reversed chart. We are not staffed to open every Word 97 document and convert spreadsheets to charts. How can we fix this without installing Word 97 on the converter?

Was Office loaded on that machine at work?
If so it is my guess that one of two things is happening.

1) The Office dll that displays pictures is resident on the work network and is only loaded when it is needed - thus displaying that message.

2) A similar thing with the document that just the link (and thumbnail) to the pictures were included in the document. The actual pictures are still on the network.

Hi all

I've recently rebuilt my Win7 Pro 64 bit PC following a serious malware attack.  I've installed my OS and common programmes on a Crucial M4 128GB SSD and have a new 2TB HDD.  I've followed the various bits of advice about how to setup the BIOS for an SSD and the PC itself is running perfectly.

I need to be able to run XP mode due to having some legacy software which doesn't support 64 bit OS and this was working perfectly before rebuild.  I have installed XP mode and virtual PC direct off the MS site and to all intents and purposes it works (I'm typing this in XP mode!)

The problem I'm having is I can't access any of my shared drives, either the physical drives within the PC or my NAS drive connected to my router.  As soon as I double click in explorer to open a file location the VM shuts down and reboots.  I've got the minidump file in case anyone is able to give some advice on the possible cause and solution, but it won't allow me to upload it on here.  From the submitted error report it appears to be a driver issue, but that's as far as it gets with support from MS.

I've tried the obvious Google searches for any obvious similar events and I'm drawing a blank, but could be because I'm not aware of what to search for!  I can't help thinking this is somehow related to the SSD and/or BIOS settings required for that not working with the XP VM?

Any suggestions of where to start?!

Thanks

Please can anyone help me - I don't want to have to do all my work again!

A:lost an excel file opened from IE

Depending on what e-mail software you are using, your e-mail program may have put the attachment in a temporary directory for it to be opened in Excel. Unless you did a "Save as" to a different location Excel would have done saves to that same temporary location. It sounds like your security settings may have been set to clear the temporary location when exiting Windows or the mail software. I am not familiar with the default mail program that come with Vista.

I have arranged my file icons in "My Documents" folder in a particular way that is good for me. My arrangement has a different number of files on each row. When I open an Excel 2000 file by double clicking the icon, the icon moves to a different location in the folder. It seems to move to the next available space in the grid. When I close the file, the icon moves again, not back where it was, but to the highest available grid space. Opening a Word 2000 file seems to work OK. The icon doesn't move. I have tried this on XP machines with newer Excel and the icon doesn't move. Is this something unique to Windows 2000 or Excel 2000 or do I have some other problem?

Maybe you should reinstall this whole package again?.

You may be able to get away with using a macro that is attached to the Personal.xls template. Just add the code to the workbook_open event of the template file (Personal.xls) so that it will fire each time Excel is opened. If you are unsure how to access Personal.xls just follow these steps.

1) Open Excel and record a macro using the macro recorder. When the macro recorder box pops up change the option under "Store Macro In" from This Workbook to Personal Macro Workbook and click OK. This will create your Excel template called Personal.xls

2) Stop the macro recorder (doesn't matter if no action was taken)

3) Press ALT + F11 to bring up the VB editor.

4) Drill through the project explorer Window on left to find object called "ThisWorkbook" under Personal.xls and right click it and choose view code.

5) Paste the code below into the blank code module and save.
Code:

Private Sub Workbook_Open()

Application.DefaultFilePath = "C:\YourPath"

End Sub

Hi -

I'm stumped. Why does Win7's networking/sharing have to be infinitely more complicated than XP was?

I have a computer running Win7 Home x64 that I call "fileserver". My main day-to-day machine is a laptop running Win7 Pro x64. There are several other computers throughout the house all running WinXP Pro (32 bit).

I do a lot of video processing on my laptop, and whenever a file is done processing and ready to live on the fileserver, I move it over there. As soon as I do this, sharing for the computer called "fileserver" DIES. All shares on the machine become inaccessible, and all other machines lose access.

I can't fathom why this would happen, but it does. My workaround for the time being is to simply reboot the fileserver, which magically restores sharing. However, this is a horrible workaround since files of all types are being accessed from that machine all day long.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

briansmccabe

A:Win7 sharing "breaks" when I move a file to the shared location

Update: I got to digging around a bit more with sharing permissions, security, etc and found that the ownership of the shared directories was sort of all over the place. In several instances, the "owner" of the directory in question was some unknown user with a long ID number.

I'm starting to think that every time I moved a file into a shared directory on that fileserver machine, my user ID on my machine sort of hijacked ownership of the directory. So I've tweaked a ton of settings and unified the ownership and security policy across all shared dirs, and we'll see how that goes.

I'm still interested in anyone's input though.

Thanks

I have been presented with a project that involves Forms that I am not able
to resolve.

Basically I have been asked to create a document template where other team
members can fill out a form that asks a series of questions, then to have
only the completed form results export to a new file.

I am aware that Word can export the form results to a text file, but when I
do this all of the questions that were on the original form are exported to
the new file.

What we are looking to achieve in the end:
If the end user is faced with 20 questions, but only 12 of the questions
pertain to the end users project, only the 12 completed form fields will
export to a new file.

I know that this should be possible with using a macro button to export the data, but that is where I need the help.

I tried searching for this exact situation, but I did not find any matches, hence the new thread.

Thank you in advance,

Bill

Hello,
We created an Excel shared file where multiple users can access it on the server, make any edits, then they manually save their changes so that others (after they also manually save the same file) can see those changes.
Since one of the computers is hooked up to an office large screen, we want that file which is being shown on the large screen to automatically save (thus seeing any changes made by others) without having to go to that computer and manually saving (thus updating the file) every 5 minutes or so.
I tried various settings on that PC linked to the large monitor in the options section under Save, but nothing seems to work, forcing me to actually do a manual save every 5 minutes or so.
Can this be done automatically on that PC hooked to the large monitor without having someone do this manually at that PC every 5 minutes or so (or whatever interval time period somebody decides to do this)?
Please assist if at all possible; thank you very much.
Nelson

Help.

I have just accidentally in the advanced features of Excel 2007 put a subdirectory at start up, but it was the wrong one and there are 100's of files in that subdirectory.

Consequently when I open Excel it starts loading all the files in that subdirectory. This means that I cannot get back to that feature and change it as I cannot access it due to the vast amount of files it is loading.

Anybody else done this and if so what is the best way to correct it.

Many thank for any help here.

A:Solved: Excel 2007 Startup file location mistake help!

Managed to solve it.

I gave the folder another name, so that Excel couldn't find it and then went into advanced features and corrected my error.
I then renamed the folder back to its proper name and hey presto.

I have a problem in a clients office where three people are sharing a workbook file. One person is on 2003, and the other 2 are on 2007. For one of the 2007 users and the 2003 users the file works fine. They are able to modify save and reopen. One of the users can open a the file but if she modifies and saves the file .. next time she opens the file Excel claims there is a problem with the format, preforms a recover action on the file, and then closes. The next time any excel file is opened Excel shows the recovered xls document minus the formatting. This issue just started happening, the file has been shared between the users for about a year now. The new file has stripped all date and currency formatting. As well as filters and coloring.

Additional information: Currently no other shared files are effected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

My group works in a shared excel worksheet (2007)--about 20 people. We're noticing that sometimes changes will be made to cells by a user that isn't even working in that sheet. It will show that he altered or deleted information and the time of the change even though he wasn't working in there. He does however have other excel files opened when this occurs. We did a cleanup/maintenance on the worksheet but it seems to keep happening. This has happened before to other users but recently seems to be happening the most to this guy who happens to be the person assigned to admin the shared spreadsheets. Any ideas?

You could try opening up word, select help and look for a detect and repair option. Give that a try and see if it solves your problem.

I am using an ASP.NET 2.0 web application using the Interop assembly pointing to the Microsoft.Excel 12.0 COM to open and write to a spreadsheet.

I have set the permissions for the DCOM to allow NETWORK SERVICE to open the Excel application, but when I try to open the actual file I get Exception from HRESULT: 0x800A03EC.

I have changed the website directory permissions to allow NETWORK SERVICE full access to the folder and I still cannot open the file.

Thoughts?

I have a spreadsheet that is used by a number of users and has a macro built into it to collect updates from several other sheets. I want to add to the macro so that once it has been updated and saved the macro then saves another version of the sheet in a seperate folder with the date and time it was saved as part of the file name.

I have tried

ChDir"H:\Resourcing Teams\Placements\Weekly activity\Archive"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:= _
"H:\ResourcingTeams\Placements\Weekly activity\Archive\" & Now.Day & Now.Month &Now.Year &" .xlsx", _
FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbook, CreateBackup:=False

But get errors

Any suggestions greatly appreciated
