M710q Gel/Oil Under M.2 Drive

Q: M710q Gel/Oil Under M.2 Drive

Haven't run into this before. Had a unit that couldn't complete Windows recovery. Opened it up to pull the drive to try to manually see if user profile could be accessed and copied. Upon removing the drive, saw this accumulation of oil/gel under the drive, on top of the tape on the mobo, accumulated around the contact end of the drive and socket. There was sufficient quantity that I'm presuming it created a short across the contacts leading to the drive failure. Opened another unit, and while there wasn't this type of gel/oil accumulation, the tape definitely had a slick residue on it. There wasn't any exterior liquid intrusion; this was only present between the drive and the tape. At this point, we're reimaging the unit with a 2.5 SSD, but really curious about this from a durability/longeveity standpoint. This was a factory M.2 drive.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There is no option for USB Type C optional connector order customize page for Lenovo M910 Tiny. But that option is mentioned in the PDF spec and on the product page.

Is it a bug of the customize page, error in spec or temporary unavalilability? I'm in US, if region is important.

Hello, all! I just found a Thinkcentre M710Q at a local shop. There was no HDD and, as I inspected it further, no SATA cable/connector to it, with the ribbon connector ZIF socket looking broken. I intend on using is at an emulation machine that runs solely off of USB (with the option for HDD installation). After "burning" the image to a USB flash drive and powering on the Thinkcentre, it'll show that it's loading, then reset back to POST. When I rebooted the computer, it'll sometimes boot to the OS's splash screen, then freeze, or loop back to POST screen. I tried using a live Linux distro, but getting the same results. Using a USB disc drive and using several OS installation discs, getting same results. I checked the BIOS settings, and the secureboot is disabled. I've also disabled the SATA connection (since I may not use it since the connector is damaged), and modified the boot order so the USB drive is read from first, going as far as excluding all but the USB drive in the boot order. The adapter I got with it works with the unit, but it seems that it's 2.25A, where the computer says 3.25A. Would that cause a problem with the USB drive being properly read? TL;DR: Found old Thinkcentre, won't load USB drive properly, possible power issue with slightly underpowered adapter? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Now, i´ve installed a Crucial MX500 2280SS 256 GB drive (CT250MX500SSD4) as outlined by the manual, but within the BIOS the drive is not being recognized, also no trace of it within Windows 10. I have purchased a Tiny-in-one monitor and a M710q system.  My problem is the M710q will not fit in the TIO monitor.  The specs for the TIO did not say it would hold a M710q, but I thought the specs had just not been updated to include it.  The M710q and a M700 look identical in size and placement of ports on the rear.  Thus I have several questions.  Can someone tell me definitively if the M710q and TIO combo should work?  Do I have a defective unit in either the TIO or M710q?  Is there a newer model of the TIO for the M710q?  Lenovo engineering has created a support ticket 404CDRS with their engineering group for this.

I seem to be running in to this a bit moe as with these systems and same Viewsoinc monitor.  In the past i have had a few issues with other Tiny's and dual monitor setups that needed a power supply swap to drive the second screen.  This one i have about 5 systems now with the same viewsonic monitors, mostly dual but some single, where the monitor makes a POP sound and flickers.  Anyone else seen this?  Its kind fo my standard so i dont have another monitor to try or spare power supplies.  Drivers, etc all been done.  Win10 on all, 1709 and using displayport ened to end. We dont have support upgrades so i am not sure where we can go with Lenovo here.

A Drobo 5C DAS connected to a Lenovo M710q host will only show up as bcdUSB 2.10 high speed rather than 3.0 superspeed.  ESXi was initially VMware-ESXi-6.5.0.update02-8294253-LNV-20180605 and later updated to 6.7 from vmware's repository as part of troubleshooting.  ntfs throughput for the Drobo added as a device in a Server 2012 vm via usb 3.0 controller in the vm settings reaches only ~40MB/s.   Reverting to xhci in place of the newer vmkusb using https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2147650 has been tried and  module status was verified to confirm it did change to xhci but it still stayed at 2.10 with no change other than xhci throughput being somewhat slower than vmkusb.  Different usb cable has been tried.  Differnt usb ports on front & rear with the "SS" label have been tried. Bios has been updated.  A sandisk usb 3.0 memory stick plugged into another M710q on ESXi 6.7 does populate as usb 3.0.   An older model Drobo 5D connected to Lenovo M73 tiny or M83 tiny running ESXi 6.0 populates at usb 3.0 and reaches ~250MB/s ntfs throughput when added as a usb device in a Server 2012 vm via xhci controller in the vm settings.   Not a 1:1 comparison but it's the closest matching setup I have access to right now.  Key lines in the output below are the bcdUSB entries under the Data Robotics sections.  Any suggestions to get 3.0 out of this setup are appreciated.   BIOS Info: #0

Hello,

I want to end up with a Tiny with 1TB of SSD storage (about 250GB for boot+programs and 750GB for data) . Can you please suggest the best way to do this?

It doesn't appear Lenovo provides an option for 1TB of SSD, which would be the easiest solution, either with single or combined 2.5" SSD drive and/or M.2 SSD drives.
I prefer to order with an SSD boot drive and keep that in place so I keep the original OS and boot disk without having to reconfigure.
If I buy with only a 256GB SSD, is that in the 2.5" or the M.2 slot? If I do that, could I just purchase a 1TB SSD to install myself in the unused drive bay or M.2 slot?
Any other suggestions for the most painless approach to this?

Thank you.

Hello,I have a ThinkCentre M710Q Tiny (10MQS2UJ00) that uses two DisplayPort to HDMI cables and connects to two Samsung 24" displays. This setup was working fine for several months, I extended my desktop to the second monitor and life was good. I dont know what caused it to stop working (driver update?, etc) but one day recently the "second" monitor stopped displaying a picture. If I disconnected the cable/power from the back of the monitor that went black and then reconnected, the picture would come back on and the desktop would again extend. After about 15 seconds, the display went black again. I unplugged both monitors, plugged both in and both started working again, 15 seconds later, one display goes black. I tried running one display alone on one of the two DisplayPorts outputs and a single monitor works fine. I then tried the second monitor alone on the "other" DisplayPort outputs and a single monitor works fine. So both monitors, both cables,  and both DisplayPorts work fine when only one display is attached to either of them, but two displays no longer work simultaneously. I have the latest drivers and BIOS and tried changing the Display settings in BIOS for "IGP" from Auto to manual. All no luck. Lastly, IBM sent a technician with a new system board to my house. After swapping out the motherboard, the same problem persists. Now IBM wants to send a second replacement system board with their technician.  This all worked flawlessl... Read more

We have ThinkCentre M710q 10MR, many of them.  All are running Windows 10 on a corporate network with AD. Sometimes, after a reboot, there is no network connectivity. Setting a static IP doesn't resolve the problem. Rebooting two or three times fixes the problem. Most PC's are connected to an Avaya or Polycom VoIP phone. Rebooting the phone does not often help (but sometimes does) Disconnecting from the phone, or rebooting the phone, causes the Ethernet lights to go out, and the interface show no Ethernet cable connected. Connecting to a wireless network *seems* fine, but more testing is needed.  Switching Environment is Cisco 2960-X, other devices do not seem affected.
