Outlook 2010 running in safe mode after todays updates

Q: Outlook 2010 running in safe mode after todays updates

Since the update reboot Outlook is running in safe mode and though the reading panel is correctly set up it is closed every time Outlook is restarted. Add ones are all missing. I have no idea how to sort it short of removing all the updates. I have run a repair install and SFC /SCANNOW with no problems or change.

Preferred Solution: Outlook 2010 running in safe mode after todays updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys I've checked through some of the tuts and what-not on this forum and still can't find a way to get me out of trouble..
i turned my computer on yesterday (23rd September) and there was an automatic update. Ever since the update my computer has been extremely slow (will take several minutes to open firefox -or anything for that matter). I booted safe mode and it's running fine. I opened up msconfig and did a clean boot but the problem was still there.
It's a fairly new build and I was stupid and forgot to get a virus protection i can't install it in safe mode either..

Can anyone help?

Hi All,

Been having this problem since yesterday. Whenever I start up windows, it freezes after a couple of minutes. Tried going into safe mode to run virus scan (Avira and Malwarebytes) but both freeze halfway through scanning and I have to do a hard reset. No idea at all what is wrong with it.

Also find that when I try to open Adobe PDF Reader, it shows this message when I am in normal mode. 'The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed.' Right after that, it freezes. Not sure if that's relevant.
Please help me! Thanks a lot in advance!

Today I installed all the offered updates, seven security in total I think plus an optional. I Iooked in detail at the notes for each and saw nothing alarming.

First unexpected happening was the appearance of a new 'Browser Choice' tile on my start menu. Right click and its gone, OK, can live with that.

After another reboot and having let things run for 30 minutes or so I do a disk clean, a reboot and a defrag. All seemed fine and then I notice the live weather tile is just blue. Opening the app also gives just a blue screen. Brilliant !!!!!

For curiosity I start uninstalling the updates and find that uninstalling the IE11 cumulative breaks the app even more... if that is possible. Now opening the app reverts me to the desktop, however I can see the weather app icon in the tray. Clicking that to expand it opens to the blue screen and then automatically reverts back to the desktop.

So its all well and truly pancaked... yet again. Thank you Microsoft.

I'm not even going to attempt to troubleshoot this as I have become thoroughly disillusioned with what was a superb OS. I have a suspicion that all the W10 stuff over the summer has also played its part in making what was once a snappy and responsive OS become somewhat less so. That's very hard to pin down and hard to say for sure... but I have a plan. I'm going to nail this once and for all and know for sure.

Got home from work and had 2 a few windows updates waiting to be installed...installed them and restarted and now my 2 cd/dvd drives are not being loaded correctly in the device manager.
Also I have Daemon Tools and had 4 drives being emulated and those also have the exclamation mark over them.

None of these show up under My Computer folder.

I already tried uninstalling the updates but they still stayed the same. It is showing windows drivers for the driver on the devices.

Any ideas other than trying to find the correct drivers for them? That is what I will do right now...but I have no idea what I can do for the virtual drives...already disabled and enabled them but no luck getting them to be recognized properly.

Well I'm no expert on this but I do see some things.
Are you the administrator? (0x80004005)
WMPNSS-Service is not starting. (Windows Media Player Network)

You could do this. It might help and won't hurt.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

This also might be fixed when you run sfc /scannow.

I just let Windows install todays updates. Everything except Skype (this included an NVidia driver). When the computer started up after the Windows update (with the "don't shut off computer completing updates. etc.) message, the computer shut off. First I thought it was part of the update (and machine would restart) but it was not. Something broke.

I restarted and as soon as hit windows start screen it shut off again. I restarted again and got the "Windows Did Not Start - repair message". I said "run startup repair". Windows shut off during that process. I restarted again, and was able to run the repair process. But once it finished and booted into Windows it shut off again. I was finally able to start Windows so went to command prompt and started to run SFC /Scannow. It shut off during this test.

lastly I thought maybe its an overheat issue. I booted into Windows Safe mode and started the program HWMonitor. It showed my CPU temps at 39 degrees C. Then it shut off again. At this rate I'm going to wear out the on/off button.

Any ideas?

A:After todays (7/19) Windows updates my computer keeps shutting off

Try a System Restore yet? Do it in Safe Mode (or repair disk/install DVD), hopefully no restarts to interfere the restore. Then install updates one by one (restart after each and wait a bit to make sure it is alright), Nvidia as last.

You can also try just downgrading GPU drivers first, and restore if it does restart like that.

No need for follow-up or help with this issue. It's not a malware problem. I had corrupt and missing files causing my problem. I worked with the Microsoft support team, and they helped me find the problem. Unfortunately, we couldn't get all the missing files. So, they are going to help me upgrade to Win 7.

I must say that they are rapidly changing the image of Microsoft from being an unresponsive software company to a customer focused company. I have never gotten such great service from any vendor, and at no cost to me. These guys went the extra mile for me. They were very responsive and skillful. And they are a Microsoft overseas outsource team. Forget what you heard about outsourced teams. They speak better English than some of us in the USA...very skillful and a job well done. :-)

I'm fixing my son's computer. It is Windows XP, SP2. AVG8.5 and Adware protection. His computer got hit with Internet Security 2010, something which I've never dealt with before. Since I couldn't navigate much at all in regular mode, I thought I could stifle the infection in Safe Mode. I went into Safe Mode without Networking, using the Administrator account. The infection showed up there. I used my own computer to Google for help and Bleeping Computer had a removal method on the forum, so I tried it. I sneaker-netted rkill to the infected computer and ran it. Then I sneaker-netted MBAM to the infected computer along with the extra file that I had to put into the MBAM folder. When I clicked on the extra file, I got an Error: 730 (0,0). I ran the MBAM and went to update it, but of course I was not connected to the Internet, so I got an Error: 732 (0,0). I tried the AVG8.5 and it did a Command Line scan, putting several trojans into its vault. When it was done, I did a restart.

Argh! I got to the log-in screen and all it did was log me off. Then I booted back into Safe Mode and all I got was a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners. I was able to bring up the Task Manager, but that was all.

Did I kill the hard drive? I can take the HD out and piggy-back it into this laptop with a USB HD external shell. But before I do that, what do you advise? I cannot give you a HijackThis log or any other log because I cannot boot the computer up t... Read more

I've found a few things in regedit and deleted them
I've also found a couple ANTIVIRUS PRO 2010 folders and deleted them.
But, I'm hesitant to reboot in fear it'll tighten its grip.

Tried downloading malwarebytes from another computer onto a memory stick - renaming it before the download and renaming it again before running it - to no avail
No internet to run hijackthis and post a log
No Windows
No Add & Remove Programs
Please tell me I'm over-thinking and I've missed the simplist stroke of a key to fix this.

Hi,
I really hope someone can help. My computer gets infected all the time and I can usually get it fixed, but not with this one. I have PC_Antispyware 2010 (somehow it automatically installed itself on my computer). I cannot boot in any form of safe mode. I can't run task manager. I can't run combofix, or any program for that matter. I've searched for the files that most sites say to delete, but come up with no results. Does anyone have any idea how to do anything about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

A:PC Antispyware 2010 - Can't boot in safe mode - Can't run taskmgr or Combofix or MBAM

You have gotten one of a series of Trojan.FakeAlert virus/spyware combos that have been around a couple of years now, morphing slightly from time to time. I've observed several delivery vehicles, but the one most seen has been the download of a small virus upon visiting an infected website (which may not know it is a host) followed by the uploading of the main package, in your case named PC Antispyware 2010. It comes out of Russia and invariably asks for money to fix the problem. It gets by every major antivirus program (that I've seen) and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is the only solution I've found. When it first came out I was able to remove it manually but they've gotten better at hiding themselves. Be sure to turn off System Restore or you could simply reinfect yourself on reboot - turn System Restore back on after the infection is cleaned. In some cases you cannot install and run MBAM, and then it is necessary to remove your hard drive and run it as a secondary drive in another computer while scanning it with MBAM for the virus files. Once that scan is complete, return the drive to your computer and run MBAM again to remove Registry entries. If you keep catching this you need to carefully observe which site seems to be related and stop going there. You might also consider subscribing to MBAM's paid version, which will run in the background. Good luck.

Reinstall. It has been too badly damaged. Your settings have been preserved as has your mail, in most cases... but it is still wise to use Outlook recovery software (see www.majorgeeks.com and others) before you perform the reinstall... your files in process at the time of the failure are likely lost.

I've been working on my father's computer (an HP pavillion zv5000), and realized that he had some Windows XP updates to be installed, so I decided to download them. What I didn't realize at the time was that he hadn't installed any updates in almost 2 years (though Automatic Updates appear to be enabled). When I rebooted after the installations were complete, I could not start in Normal Mode.

When starting normally, I get a black screen with white writing saying that
there's been a problem with the computer (can't remember word-for-word), and gives me the option to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and another safe mode. It also offers to start up with the last settings that worked, or normal mode. When I try to boot up in normal mode, it sends me back to that same screen, and likewise when I try to boot with the last settings. Now it only works in Safe Mode.

I'm not really sure what's happened, and if it's related to the updates or if it could be a virus (I got a similar screen when my own computer had a virus a few years ago). I'd appreciate any and all help!

Thanks in advance

Acer 5252 - auto-processed Win7 Home Prem (64 bit) updates. System started running slowly - figured it was from some large games so deleted them and defragged - system progressively worse - no viruses detected. Started getting error when trying to CtrlAltDel to get to task mgr to see what processes were running - error was "The logon process was unable to display security and logon option...". Reboot brings up Windows with no errors but takes 5-10 min for anything to start, and then hangs again. Can only shut down with power button. Starting in Safe Mode (w/ or w/o Networking) works but restore points are missing, so can't revert (I had plenty of room so not sure why the old points were deleted).

Dragged out my old Acer 6530 - Win7 Home Prem (32 bit) - haven't used it since around Jan so it was several updates behind. Worked fine until Windows updates applied - then same behavior as the first laptop. Was able to revert back to prior Windows and problems were gone.

Can someone please enlighten me as to how there are shifty programs running while I am in safe mode? Does safe mode have its own .ini? Is it possible to have a script run on my machine and manipulate the .ini to allow non-essential system files to run in safe mode? I am on my laptop right now, and it is difficult to get a hjt log posted seeing as I can only run in safe mode and the usb drivers are not there to support my flash drive. If there is something specific that would help from any type of log I would be happy to type it out, but I will throw this tower in my aquarium before I type the whole log.

The proc in question is IEXPLORE.EXE and there are multiple instances running at all times. It seems to be in cahoots with a drwtsn32.exe proc that I think should not be there because I am not utilizing any debugging features (unless safe mode includes one). With that said, 64% of my CPU is taken up by csrss, but I am in safe mode; minimal.

Now the issue that really pisses me off is the fact that I cannot start services from the cmd prompt.
I enter; at xx:xx /interactive cmd.exe, press enter and it flips me the bird and says "service not started".
However, I am able to launch spybot from the not so clean cmd. If you look at the safe email in question, it should be marked why it was put in the spam folder. Something like: ”This message was marked as spam using the Outlook Junk E-mail filter.” which will determine what rule or system needs to be modified. See here for more info.

HI all...

I had my computer in storage for 7 weeks (on a boat being shipped back to US from the Middle East) and just got it unpacked a few days ago.

It started normally (a BIG relief) then wanted to do updates...48 of them!! So I started the update process but after the updates it will not boot...not normally, not to safe mode. The PC ran a CHKDSK on its own but couldn't boot after the CHKDSK.

I did manage to get Startup Repair to run once and the machine restarted to the Windows splash screen then that disappeared and now all I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer which I can move but nothing to point it at.

I cannot get to Sys Restore, safe mode, AV programs, etc.

I DO have a brand new Win 7 disk I got in Dubai a few months ago after having a tech there rebuild the machine with a new HDD and more memory...but it says "OEM System Builder Pack intended for system builders ONLY"...I suppose I could do a clean install with that and I also have a complete backup on an external drive that I made just before leaving Dubai...butI don't want to do that unless I have to.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

See if the following helps;

Try running Command Prompt from the repair menu and then Check Disk:

1. Insert the Windows 7 Disc and boot from it.
2. In the recovery menu, choose Command Prompt .
3. Type the following command and press Enter:

Chkdsk /r /f

This morning I saw the latest Windows 7 updates on an old computer I have (A VM running in XCP-NG) to run an old version of Confluence Wiki but that's not really important.
After installing the updates and rebooting the VM is so slow that it looks frozen at times. I restarted it in safe mode to remove the updates but when I access the Windows Updates list from Programs and Features it shows "No updates installed."
Has anyone else seen something like this? I have backups of this VM so I'm working to restore from a backup and before you ask, I know - I have to update that Win7 machine to a more recent version of Windows.
Thanks in advance and best regards.

Hi I've been struggling to remove some kind of virus from my computer. It redirects browser windows and won't let me download or update any malware removal tools. I used my laptop to download malwarebytes (not up to date b/c of update issue) and ran it but got no threats. Since the problem continued, I ran malware bytes in safe mode. It found 4 threats and I deleted these. Afterwards the problem remained and I now cannot enter safe mode.

I also tried booting from an AVG recovery CD, scanned and found one threat, deleted, problem remains. I can get into windows explorer but it will no let me edit All Users/Application Data.

Hello

A couple of days ago my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro A300, running XP Professional) became infected by "XP Defender 2011". In an attempt to be clever I tried to remove it myself using RKill, FixExe and then Malware Bytes. After managing to remove some infected Registry files and one infected file (see log below) there is no longer the Defender pop-up or block on the Firewall. However, when I try to run my laptop in Safemode I get a blue-screen message about there being a known virus on my system, my Automatic updates are blocked and my web browsers (Mozilla, IE) occasionally crash.

Thank you very much for your time.

Running Internet explorer 7 , Firefox 3.5.18 and Vista Home Basic. Compaq Desktop computer.
Problem started this morning, couldn't turn on the PC. No power. Checked cords and plugs ,monitor would turn on ,printer worked so it's nothing to do with powerboards, sockets, electricity. Waited 10 mins and tried again. The pc powered up to the windows log in screen. I left it and came back 20 mins later and the light behind the power on/off button had gone from green to amber and the screen was blank. My initial thought was the PSU. I rebooted and got it working however Internet explorer wouldn't open but firefox would. I ran avg but could not open the home page to see the results of the scan. I closed firefox and tried to reboot but got an error message saying firefox was still running. I started the task manager only it wouldn't display, I could see the green icon only in the bottom toolbar. I couldn't see the taskmanager even though it was running. I powered down by holding in the on/off button for 10 seconds. Rebooted into safemode. I can run both browsers in safe mode. I downloaded spybot ,got updates and ran it and fixed the problems it found. I installed avira and ran it. It found 1 problem,
EXP/ms04-028.jpeg.A which was removed.
I was unable to get into windows update to get the online scan in either normal or safe mode. I'm not sure if the problem is a virus or not since after removing ms04-028 I still have the problem.

Im workin on a acer aspire 5516, with vista home basic 32-bit. This is the 2nd time that I have worked on it. I had the same issue with my own desktop 2 years ago, with same OS. I upgraded to ultimate and fixed the issue. With comin across another pc with the same issue I thought maybe its an OS issue that Bleeping Computer knew about.

With said, back to the laptop.
Dont remember what was wrong with laptup the first time i worked on it. It had to be infected, cause I used combofix on it then in safemode. I wasnt able to get back into safe mode then. But runnin other scans without finding anything and it seemed to be cleaned. I returned it to owner.

Now months later, owner wasnt able to puchase and download Malwarebytes Pro. The mouse was acting odd, also, the printer drivers just disappeared from the printer folder. So I started running the following scans, all in normal mode:

malwarebytes
combofix

Having issues with Security Shield.I downloaded MBAM and rather than log on and use rkill to stop the process I just logged on in safe mode and am running MBAM.Will it still work?

A:Running MBAM in safe mode

Scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in safe or normal mode will work but removal functions are not as powerful in safe mode. Malwarebytes is designed to be at full power when malware is running so safe mode is not necessary when using it. In fact, Malwarebytes loses some effectiveness for detection & removal when used in safe mode because the program includes a special driver which does not work in safe mode. Further, scanning in safe mode prevents some types of malware from running so it may be missed during the detection process. Additionally, there are various types of malware infections which target the safeboot keyset so booting into safe mode is not always possible. For optimal removal, normal mode is recommended so it does not limit the abilities of Malwarebytes but sometimes there is no alternative but to do a safe mode scan. If that is the case, after completing a safe mode scan, reboot normally, update the database definitions through the program's interface (preferable method) and try rescanning again.

I believe I had/have some sort of non-malware related problem. My computer was freezing up upon start-up after installing a windows update. I would remove the update and the computer would return to normal.
Now, I am thinking coud it be malware? I ran an AVG scan andit gave me alot of errors on the log list and I am not sure but I believe it said they were fixed. I can't find the log. I ran AVG again after my computer froze again and this time AVG would stop unexpectadley. I have the most recent log from AVG. It just displays "locked file" for almost everythign that it scanned. (The locked files appeared on all AVG scans)
So now AVG wont run. It runs normally when the computer is running normally.
I am wondering if the AVG ordeal could be a sign my computer is infected.

*On the Event Viewer it shows 137 errors within the last 7 days. and 4,264 warnings*
If its not malware related, can this be moved to were it needs to go ? Thank You!

i am trying to clean my computer as thouroughly as possible as it has been a very long time since anyone has bothered.
is there any disadvantages to running spybot, ad-aware, scan disk, defrag or ccleaner in safe mode? can you generally get better results when this is all done in safe mode? should safe mode scanning/cleaning be done regularly or only as needed when the regular stuff does not do the trick? thanks

A:Running Programs In Safe Mode

What Safe Mode does is to run your operating system with only the most essential modules; this can save time when running scandisk or defragging, becuase fewer programs attempt to access the various files on the disk which causes these two programs to restart. At times, you will also need to run your AV in Safe Mode when it cannot quarantine a virus because other applications are accessing it and therefore Windows protects it.
If your computer is gunked up (forgive the technical language), then running all the applications and utilities you mentioned in Safe Mode for the first time might speed up the process. Normally, though, you can run these in regular mode.
Regards,
John

Was working on a computer, Avira was saying iexplorer.exe on %user%/desktop/google/installer or something like that was found.

So I threw JRT, adwcleaner, tdskiller (it found another iexplorer in some odd place) and then I ran MBAM.  It found a good bit of trojans and such, not a single PUP, just about 10+ pretty bad looking things. (I'll attach log).
So after cleaning that up I figured I'd make a pass with ComboFix on it.  After that it will only boot in safemode.  I ran it a couple of more times as some times it needs to fix it's own damage. But that didn't get me anywhere.  I also tried Tweaking.com's All-in-one tool with no positive effects.

I started looking for the original combofix log and only found 2 and 3 in the qooboox dir.  In root dir it had a combofix log but that wasn't the original either.  Don't have a clue what ate the original one with the real data that I need.  But I do have a quarantine list... I'll post all that I have.

*edit*  Looks like the naming just got screwy but the "3" file is the oldest and has all the deletions and now I remember reading through them and thinking they were all harmless... so I'm still clueless as to what broke.

I think I'm posting in the right forum...I don't know, I hope so.

Anyhow, my notebook has been acting funny for a couple of days. It seems to only want to run in Safe Mode (I always choose Safe Mode with Networking so I can get online). If I try to shut it down and restart in Normal mode, the Windows screen comes up (the black screen with a little bar at the bottom)...and that's it. It'll run like that unless I shut it off, then cut it back on and choose Safe Mode.

Even in Safe Mode, there are problems. If I have more than 2 windows open, it'll freeze up. In Normal Mode, its the same thing. I don't recall any changes I've made recently, so I have no idea what to do. I even tried to do a System Restore....same 'Windows' screen came up and just ran for about 45 minutes.

My friend mentioned something about maybe some drivers were broken, but I checked and none of my drivers have errors.

I'm running the Windows XP OS, and I have a Gateway Mini Notebook, so there's no CD-ROM drive.

I've only gotten the blue screen of death once, it was early last night, and I couldn't read the whole thing, but it was a KERNEL error.

I have AVG 8.0 and Malware Bytes. I've run both and they've come back as me having a clean system. My firewall is currently not active (I'm just using the standard Windows Firewall).

I'm clueless and getting really frustrated, as this is the only computer I have and I have 3 finals projects I ha... Read more

Have a look at these websites for checking your settings. You might also notice that if you have a trusted sender, set up a contact for them in your address book.

My computer was recently automatically updated by MS. The updates took a really time to install. Prior to the updates I had no issues with backing up/exporting .pst files in Outlook 2010. Post update I can no longer back up/export a .pst file. Every time I attempt it Outlook freezes and give me "not responding" errors. It never comes back from freezing and has to manually ended. I never had these issues prior to the update.

Also, I noticed that it appears to be creating additional "outlook data files."

The other problem is that the search function is now slow as molasses on a semi-hot southern day. Prior to the updates there were no issues with searching email. Now, it takes forever.

Help, please!

We have a bunch of users who are using Outlook 2010 and their Outlook search function is no longer working. This happened just yesterday which there is no coincidence this
is after Microsoft's big June 2017 patch tuesday. I believe one of the updates has
broken the search. I am trying to determine exactly which KB.

for a couple users i was able to rebuild the entire search index on the computer and
that seemed to work. For others that did not, for those users i even tried restoring the computer before the updates and that also did not work.

Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

I should add that they are all running Windows 7 64bit and Outlook 2010 32bit.

Hey guys, I have been reading around and posted a bit on reddit and still no solution, although it seems like it should be simple.

2 weeks ago tuesday my work laptop had regularly scheduled windows updates that everyone loves to see right before they shut down. the next day it began with the circle of death after 1-3 min after start up, sometimes upwards of 30 minutes of functionality. but eventually the circle of death comes and i can't click on anything, however the mouse will still function.

i have gone back to every restore point possible and still get the freezing. i have updated/ran MSE in safe mode as well.

It's not a huge deal if I have to reformat, I just really feel like the solution shouldn't be that hard.

Anyways, thanks for your time.
