I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I purchased Windows 7 upgrade yesterday and tried to upgrade my Vista Home Premium to Windows 7. The install stopped with an error message that I needed to uninstall Google Toolbar and Microsoft Interactive Training before the upgrade could complete. But neither of those programs are listed in the Control Panel. I wrote to Windows 7 support and guess what, they wrote back that I needed to call an MS number and that I might be charged for the service. I HAVE TO PAY TO MS TO INSTALL MS SOFTWARE I PURCHASED? AND PAY TO UNINSTALL MS SOFTWARE THAT IS PREVENTING THE UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 7? Before I return the software and stay with this @$%#$ Vista I'll try one more time. Can anyone out there help me get rid of those two programs?

A:Remove Google Toolbar/Microsoft Interactive Training before Upgrade?

As you are finding, an in-place Upgrade is an inferior install which imports corruption from Vista into your new Win7.

It is much better to start fresh with a clean install. Back up your files, make your Vista Recovery Disks in case you ever want to restore to factory condition, then wipe the HD for cleanest slate:
SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

The installer is driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device. Only change drivers if performance dictates, starting with chipset and display.

Install programs slowly to gauge performance after each. Don't let programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they become freeloaders on RAM/CPU to spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets.

Run a lean mean AV which doesn't bloat your OS like free MS Security Essentials.

After it is done, clean and order your HD perfectly with state-of-the-art CCleaner ("Run Cleaner" and Registry tabs) then Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers monthly.

Then save a backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD or replacement in 15 minutes from DVD Repair console using stored image.

Q: Diet 7

Hello all,

Well, I need some help here. I produce music with several software and hardware, audio interfaces, synths and software synths. Now, I'll try to use and test Windows 7 on this, under serious works. Since I use MAC for that, my windows laptop has no GREAT hardware, but I think it will do the work. Core 2 Duo 1,6 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 120 HD.

So this is what I need: to clean an installation of Windows 7 to keep it as light as possible. I mean, no internet or networks, so, no antivirus or firewall. Disable AS MUCH AS IT CAN BE DISABLED to run heavy apps FAST. As I did one time on XP, I managed to get like 120 MB of RAM used and 17 processes running in a very stable system to work with. I want to do the same with 7 and test stability of system, since I and many people use their laptops to play live shows, this info could be really useful, as well as DPC latencies and other stuff.

In Xp I disabled services, installed just the necessary drivers, disabled networks and kept the color display at 16 bit. I think that Win 7 should not be that different: disable services, etc. BUT, I see that it installs network drivers automatically and enables that. I don't want that. I also plan to disable windows aero.

Any ideas? Thanks!

A:Diet 7

Well you can most likely disable network drivers and just about anything else.

But to be honest 7 is very stable at least in the 7000 build and considering it is still in beta by the time the real version comes out I am sure it will run very fast regardless of what you have running.

On a fresh start up using 4gigs of ram windows 7 with everything enabled uses just under 1gig.

Point being that even if you leave it stock settings it is going to be very very stable and fast.

Hi all,
askey127 recently helped me remove some malware from my computer (thanks again, it was a huge help). Everything's been fine since, until today. Now I have constant popups telling me that my popups are enabled, and I should call for support. Often if I try to follow a link, it will be hijacked to a fake support page, and I have ads by WorldWideWebCoupon on every page (including this one). Nothing's been installed since 2/10 other than a Java update. Can I please throw myself on the mercy of the forum and ask for help yet again?

I also have F-Secure Internet Security and Malwarebytes on my computer. Both have done full-system scans and found nothing. I have also downloaded several free antivirus programs just to see if they could find a problem. Nothing.

I have also reviewed all of my Chrome extensions and plugins, and nothing looks out of place.

Does anybody have any idea how to remove this? I have posted a link to the screenshot.

A:Can't remove spy/adware

You didn't say, but if malware shows up after Spybot or Adaware removes it, it is possible that the malware is installing a flag in System Restore and then reinstalls itself the next time you boot up. If this is what is happening to you, after Spybot etc removes it, try going to System Restore (before you reboot) and turning it off. This will delete the restore file. Then you can make a new restore file. Aurora must be hard to get rid of. I Googled it and there is a 20 buck program which purports to gets rid of it. SpyAnylists removal instructions for removing 80 or so threats, but not Aurora. Sorry about that. You really have to keep up with security for your computer. Speaking of which, it has been a couple of months since I have downloaded the latest Hosts file.Good luck with it.

Ok so here is the run down.

My wife's boss hired me to remove adware from his computer. However, I cannot seem to find and remove the culprit.

The adware has a very specific behavior. It seems to only activate when the user visits eCommerce sites. The ones visited by the owner are eBay, Worthpoint, Etsy and Groovshark(though grooveshark does not really count as eCommerce as far as I know). The popups exist only in the browser tab associated with these sites.

From what I have managed to find out from the popups themselves, they are "price peep" and "tt line".

How I have tried to remove the problem:

To date I have used spybot, webroot, and ad aware, in my attempts to remove the adware.

I have also looked up ways to remove these two "hijakers" but what I have found was useless since the instructions found state that there is a program that can be removed via add/remove software in windows 7. As well as a browser extension that one needs to be removed. Neither of these are true in this instance.

I would appreciate any help that ya'll can offer.

Thank you.

Anytime in the past that I have ever had a computer of a friends or mine get adware I have always managed to get rid of it, but this I can't. No idea how I got this but anyway, It pops up both in firefox and IE, I have adaware to try and remove it, it detects things, removes them but its still there when I check even on reboot, I also have pc cillian installed on my system with latest updates, that also finds them when I scan and says it removes them but I still have the problems when I try to surf. I have even turned off system restore incase it is using that to reinstall itself.

I also get a Mircosoft Visual C+++ error that says buffer overun detected! etc. everytime I seem to open some webpages.

Any ideas on how I can get rid of these?

A:Adware - Can you please help me remove it?!

Hi tienxviet,You need to have your flash drive scanned at the same time you clean the infected computer you're working on. There's also a flash drive cleaning program, and I'll post the program for that below, however, please note that it's not fully reliable or always effective. You may need to reformat your flash drive. If you need to use an external medium for transferring the installation programs for antimalware programs, then use a read only cd and download the programs only from recommended download sites. It sounds like you have a lot of infections and they are of the type that can be cleaned out of your computer, so to begin with, please go through the instructions in This Topic and make a note of what works and what doesn't. When you finish with that, post in the HijackThis and Malware Removal Forum so they can help you get any remaining files out of your computer which may be left over. The problem with many viruses, is that they leave some files behind to get themselves started back up, and these need to be identified and removed manually. That's why the first steps should help you get your computer back into a working order, but the final steps require that someone knowledgeable help you at the end.I see chewy posted the link for the flash drive utility in your other thread.Zllio

A:Help on how to remove adware

Hi, perhaps the best course of action here would be to attempt a system restore.

There is a nice little tutorial on how to do this at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...y-options.html

Try this and see if it helps, post back with any results.

If you require more assistance don't hesitate to ask.

Hi,

I'm running Windows 98 (sorry). I have Norton Internet Security 2005 (no one's perfect) and when I run a system scan, it finds asm.exe and asmps.dll. It describes them as "threats" but fails when I agree they should be deleted. I have also run Spybot S&D and Adware SE Plus 1.06. Neither off them find any problems (I have regualrly checked for updates on all three programs). So I still have the threats. Any ideas?

Click on this link to download : ADWCleaner Click on ONE of the Two Blue Download Now buttons That have a blue arrow beside them and save it to your desktop. Do not click on any links in the top Advert.

See the screenshot where the proper download buttons are highlighted
NOTE: If using Internet Explorer and you get an alert that stops the program downloading click on Tools > Smartscreen Filter > Turn off Smartscreen Filter then click on OK in the box that opens. Then click on the link again.

Close your browser and double click on this icon on your desktop:

You will then see the screen below, click on the Scan button (as indicated), accept any prompts that appear and allow it to run, it may take several minutes to complete, when it is done, you will get a message saying "PENDING" , Ignore that & click on the Clean button, accept any prompts that appear and allow the system to reboot. You will then be presented with the report, Copy & Paste it into your next post.

Recently I managed to somehow get myself a piece of adware/trojan which i really cannot remove now.

It seems to have created to main files in my system32 folder which cannot be deleted, even in safe mode with command prompt. These are pmkhi.dll and qomnllk.dll

I tired using VundoFix to remove them and they seemed to be removed in HijackThis but when the computer is restarted they just come back.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hello there, I am having an issue removing some adware off of my computer. I am not one to download free programs, and if so, I most certainly check for random downloads thrown in, so that is not the issue.

I have tried the following programs and processes to no avail:
HitmanPro
MalwareBytes
CC Cleaner
AdwCleaner
Running Google Chrome without any extensions activated
Checking my Program Files to see if anything was randomly downloaded (and nothing was abnormal)
Reinstalling Steam

Please help me, I really do not want to continue seeing "FLV Player" pop up almost every single time I browse either on the internet or when I'm using Steam.

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

I've searched the net some on this and followed advice given in various threads to no avail - including deleting IE temp files. I also use Opera as a browser.

NAV (part of NIS 2004 standard ed) detects 3 adware files with threat type adware.cdt - files are dc56.htm, dc57.js, dc58.htm in C:\recylers\...\. NAV cannot delete these files so each time I select skip and the scan finishes

The above directory does not exist and I have scanned both my hard drives for these files and searched the registry for any associated keys. Nothing found.

Any suggestions??

Open, shut down all ie and outlook windows, update, immunize, and scan. Be a litle more careful with thise one though

Hi Dillon, wow, you were away for awhile. Let's get this log cleaned up now....

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

I see you have P2P software installed on your machine (i.e. Trillian). We are not here to pass judgement on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to a re-infection. It is certainly a contributor to your current situation. I will make recommendations below for removal, which you can choose to ignore where this P2P application is involved. It's your decision.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Windows 7 on a Diet, to Match the Hardware Requirements of the Vista Hog

Under the leadership of Steven "Don't Call Me Transparent" Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, Microsoft will no longer repeat the five year gap between Windows XP and Windows Vista, or the mistakes done with the latest Windows client. The first sign that the Windows 7 apple will drop fat from the Windows Vista tree is the fact that the next iteration of Windows, due at the end of 2009, will be tailored for the same hardware infrastructure as XP's successor.

Rather than being a re-write of Microsoft's proprietary operating system, Windows 7
will simply build on top of Windows Vista's graphics, audio, and storage subsystems. At the same time, the Vista kernel will evolve into Windows 7's core, as Sinofsky and Christopher Flores, Director Windows Communications denied that Microsoft is building a new kernel from the ground up. Windows 7 will indeed feature an advanced model of componentization and a new kernel architecture, but it will do it by straying only superficially from what Vista is today.

"While these changes will increase our engineering agility, they will not impact the user experience or reduce application or hardware compatibility. In fact, one of our design goals for Windows 7 is that it will run on the recommended hardware we specified for Windows Vista and that the applications and devices that work with Windows Vista will be... A:My Diet Patch Ad Pop Up Please Help

Hello, and welcome to TSF.

A couple of infections there; we'll use the tools, first.

You have the Peper infection. Download PeperUninstall. Make sure you are connected online to run this program. Run it once and reboot. Then run it again for the second time. Download PeperFix and save it to your Desktop. Run it and click Find and Fix (reboot if prompted).

Download CWShredder and click on Fix (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Then, reboot and post a new HJT log

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be but make sure)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Sktempdm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tovs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tovs.exe

Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Act.UI.InternetExplorer.Plugins.AttachFile.CAttach File - {D5233FCD-D258-4903-89B8-FB1568E7413D} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

You obviously have Ad-Ware already on your machine that isn't being found by your scanners. Try posting a Hijack-This log and see if someone here can show you how to kill it off.

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis and run it.

Before you give us a new log here, if we gave you instructions for a fix, please do the fixes first and then post the new log with this updated version.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

This pc was running slow - an online virus scan (symantec) revealed 24 files infected with either Adware.Websearch, Adware.MediaTicket, Adware.Purityscan, or Adware.InstantAccess. I have disabled system restore and have done numerous online and software (AVG) virus scans - after all of that Symantec online scan still tells me there is evidence of Adware.Websearch and Adware.Purityscan. The removal tool from Symantec for Websearch (I had already uninstalled it) found nothing. The manual registry edit was not productive. Is there something I can do to clean this windows xp box a little better? I am submitting my first HJT Log - thank you very much!

Hi - the adware.purityscan showed up on my computer last weekend after my daughter's friend used my computer (without me knowing about it). It was detected by Symantec. I've been unable to get rid of the virus, and it seems to keep adding additional viruses. Although I can get rid of the "extra" viruses, they keep coming back. Today, I received an email from my ISP telling me that they've blocked my ability to send email due to the fact that they've detected SPAM coming from my machine. This is turning into a huge nightmare, as this is my work computer. I've run Spyware Doctor twice. I've also just run HijackThis. My log is below.
