Battery charging only works when lid is closed (sleep mode)

Q: Battery charging only works when lid is closed (sleep mode)

I have a HP DV6 7000 laptop. Battery charging only works when lid is closed (sleep mode). If I close the lid and plug in the charger, the indicator light shows orange, and the battery will then proceed to charge to near full. If I open the lid prior to the orange light changing to white, the battery icon always says: __% available (plugged in, not charging). Several different chargers give identical outcomes. ALL of them will fully charge the battery in about two hours; provided that, the lid is kept closed. If I open the lid, even at say 50% charge, the orange light switches to white, and the battery icon always says: __% available (plugged in, not charging). Thanks, Ed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi @ElyMayor Thank you for your reply. The last thing I can suggest trying is a restore back to factory. Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7) While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time. Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 7) You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties. My Yoga 920 seems to ranomly wake from sleep when the lid is closed. I'd had several occasions when travelling to find my latop completely dead when I needed it - or finding it burning up in the confines of my bag. A few times, I've been alerted to problem when I happen to hear my laptop make a notification sound. When this happens, the screen is already on when I open the lid and much of the bettery has been used. I've seen this occur both in and out of my bag. Nothing is plug into the laptop other then the dummy USB holder for the pen. I have Vantage installed and all updates have been applied.

Howdy folks, I did some quick searching and could not find an answers to my problem and thus am posting here. I have a X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Type 20BS) with Windows 10 and over the past 2-3 months have noticed the following problem: Problem: After placing the computer into sleep mode via the start button and closing the lid the computer will randomly start back up. I will often open my pc after noticing how overheated it is and find that it came back on and for some reason the touchscreen has been typing and opening applications. Obviously this is very annoying and results in my computer draining its batter and random applications being opened. Any ideas on what may be causing this and how I can fix it?  Happy to provide driver details and any other diagnostics if you think it would help.  Thanks,Andy

I purchased my Hp envy 360 laptop at Best Buy about a week ago. It was an open box purchase because It was in near perfect condition . I tryed charging it but it only charges when it is in sleep mode or either closed . When I plug it in while its in it has a white light and the battery days plugged in ; not charging . But when I close it there is a orange light and a couple hours later it's fully charged . I assumed I had a bad battery but I ran a battery test and it said my battery was fine . Because it charges when it's closed I assumed their was a setting I could just switch but i don't know what to do .

When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.

However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

Any idea why ?

Thanks

Hi,

Some softwares can stop the sleep request to work properly.

run cmd.exe as a admin (Click on start, type CMD, right click on CMD.exe and select run as admin)
then type the command
powercfg.exe /energy
This will generate a report that will show if any software is blocking the sleep request. Your next step would be to configure the software in control panel power options

Hi  A recurrent question but I did not find the answer for my laptop and the Lenovo setting application doesn't provide the feature. I want to be able to charge my phone on the USB port when the laptop is in sleep mode with AC plug-in. Where can I find for my laptop the option "USB always on" ? I check the BIOS and nothing there around USB charging and the Lenovo setting application section Power Management does not show any option for the USB. Should I go in a special application ? Is it standard or should I install the Lenovo companion ? Thanks for your helpRgdsNicolas

for starters, this is a sony vaio e series laptop...

I know, if I enable the option, when I do a normal shutdown I can charge, say my mp3 player from my usb 3.0 port.

what I want to know is if I close the lid like I normally do at the end of my day, can I charge my device and not say..wake the computer from what is essentially a hybrid shutdown type sleep mode?

A:charging from compatible usb 3.0 port in sleep mode

You should be able to close the lid while still charging the mp3.

I Do this on my desktop and laptop.

I think it is just as long as windows can detect that a device is plugged in. Once plugged in you can put it to sleep without worrying that it'll stop charging.

Hope this helps!

I have a question regarding my laptop.

What works better...shutting Vista down all the way or using the Sleep mode?

I have been using sleep mode more often lately and have noticed more responsive programs but is it the right thing to do?

Any advice?

Secondly...I turned off my paging file since I have 4GB of RAM and dont even use 1/2 of it in the my worst case scenario(why would I ever have to allocate that part of my HDD for nothing?)...is it safe to do this?or should I still leave a paging file available?

A:What works better...shutting down the pc or using the sleep mode?

I use the sleep mode almost exclusively and have for a long time. I haven't experienced any negative effects from this use and yes the resume from sleep is a lot faster than starting up from scratch. I do restart bi-weekly just to clean everything up and start freshed.

As to the page file I can't tell you from personal experience which is better but since I run 8gb of Ram I probably don't need it based on my research. I haven't seen any negative results to having this space allocated and not used. I have read that with 4gb you don't need it but as with all tweeks the answer is what makes you comfortable. You could disable it and then if you see a performance hit you could re-enable it, I suspect that unless you are doing memory intensive processing and editing it probably won't have a neg. effect on your system.

Have Sony VGN-CR220E with Vista Home Edition with sound problems.

All original software and hardware. Device manager says sound is working properly. Reinstalled original driver doesn't help. Volume is up, no signs of virus/bug/malware activity. VAIO Hardware Diagnostic test reports no problems. Driver version 6.0.1.5391. Has been a problem for almost a year, very consistent problem.

Whether it is netflix, itunes, windows media player, youtube, mouse clicks, or internal sound alerts from the PC...all sounds period coming out of the speaker do not work unless I enter it into sleep mode.

Coming out of sleep mode it works great...until...I try to play a new song, new video, or anything new. Sometimes I might get to play two things back to back with sound, not needing to enter sleep mode, but it is very rare. The same browser can be open (both iexplorer and firefox the same)...and going from one youtube video to another requires activating sleep mode, then hitting the power button to come out of sleep mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks

After upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1 Sleep Mode started to work as it should. Great. Loved the new feature.

Then a few days ago I noticed that the computer was not going into sleep mode after the 20 minutes. When I manually select sleep the computer attempts to go into sleep mode but two seconds later it comes back out of it.

For whatever reason it now reports the Power Button as the reason and no I have not touched it.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg /lastwake
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 1
Wake Source [0]
Type: Fixed Feature
Power Button

The only thing that has changed recently that I can think off is there was a automatic AMD drivers update.

Looking further back in the event log I can only see the Power Button as the reason for coming out of low power mode and not the actual reason which is the mouse moving as the trigger I have used. And it was way back as 24/6 that S4 Doze to Hibernate was last seen.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg /waketimers
Timer set by [SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume12\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (SystemEventsBroker) expires at 02:29:29 on 12/08/2016.
Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASK\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator\Reboot' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.

What other tools are there available to help diagnose the solution to this problem? I have run the trouble shooting which of course found nothing.

Since upgrading from XP to Win7 my PC will no longer go into sleep mode, either automatically or manually. It goes through the sleep mode sequence (screen goes off, keyboard lights go out, speakers/sound goes off, etc.) but just as it's about to go to sleep it immediately wakes up and everything that had just turned off in preparation for sleep mode comes back on.

I've gone through every toubleshooting tutorial I could find (including this site's) and nothing seems to work, including steps that appear to have worked for others. Sleep mode worked as it should on this same PC when it was running XP. Under Win7, it appears to have been broken.

I was hoping someone here may have an answer to this. The last set of updates I did SP2 and all the ones that came with it seemed to have changed something in the sleep mode. When I put my HP to sleep at night, it seems that the battery backup is lost. I know this because when I wake the computer in the AM, it says that the computer lost communion with the battery backup and then says very quickly that it has been restored! My concern is that if we have a storm and the battery backup is not working right then it won't allow me to safely shut down the computer! Has anyone had this issue lately??? I can't seem to find any info. on it!

When running on battery this computer rarely wakes from sleep.  I noticed that if I try to wake from manually entering sleep within about 10 seconds it will come back on rare occasion, typically only once after a reboot.  Any longer than 10 seconds and it won't happen.  If the charger is connected, the device is 10x more likely to return from sleep after a few seconds.  Additionally, the manual says you can wake from sleep by opening the lid, pressing the power key, pressing a keyboard key, or tapping the touch pad.  My HP only wakes from the power bottun when on battery, and the power button and sometimes when opening the lid when connected to the charger.  The keyboard and touchpad have no effect.  I've updated all the drivers/bios from the support assistant.  While updating drivers in attempt to fix this issue, the display driver said a power state could not be changed.  I verified Windows 10 has completed all updates.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the Display driver.  No errors the second time.  I went to the device manager and made sure the keyboard power management setting was set to wake from sleep.  I did mess with the power settings a bit, I reset them to default levels of the HP recommended settings.  Nothing seems to help the situation. I've followed the steps on this site: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03383935 Any recommendations?  It w... On my setting, I didn't select the "Standby mode to lower power use whenever it's possible" option, while having set a threshold for charging up to 85%. I suspect the battery level has dropped while I put the computer in sleep mode. This happened after I upgraded the Win 10 to its Anniversary Update version recently. Hi DontLoveWindows, From the information that you have given me, it is showing that you have 2 anti-virus softwares installed. Avast and Norton, that are continuously running when the printer is in sleep mode, which would be draining your power. It also shows that your printer has missing or misconfigured drivers which could be using power as well. Here is an HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers download for your printer. I suggest that you Disable your startup software. To do this: Right click or touch and hold the bottom left corner of the screen and select Run.Type msconfig in the Run box, and then press Enter. The MSconfig window opens. If the User Account Control window opens with the message, Windows needs your permission to continue, click or tap Continue to close the window. If Normal Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Select Selective Startup, and then clear the Load Startup Items check box.Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Click or tap Disable All.If Selective Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Make a list of the items that are selected. Hi all,

I have an Inspiron 1525 that is one year old. Recently the battery will be completely dead when I try to turn on the laptop and will not power on unless I plug it in. The battery meter will be at 0% when it starts up, but recharges normally when plugged in. When I unplug the laptop and close the lid (which puts it into sleep mode) the battery will be completely dead by the next morning even if it was at 100% before I closed it. I don't know why the battery is discharging completely so quickly when the computer isn't even running.

Could this just be a problem with my battery? Or is the laptop not actually sleeping when I close it, but continually using up battery power? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

A:Laptop battery discharging when in sleep mode

Note there's a difference between "Sleep" vs. "Hibernation"
> Sleep mode still requires power (It should be minimal power but definitely still draws some power)
> Hibernation requires zero power

That said, i still wouldn't expect a good battery to discharge overnight on sleep mode so you probably still have an issue with your battery holding a charge

Hi amote,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Battery draiining reports are also visible on other OEM forums as well and most likely related to similar features offered by Windows 10. Such also applies to different model of different macnufacturers as well.

Disabling fast start as discussed here would be a good step to try first.

Our forums are peer to peer community discussion group but Tech support (although maybe limited to their own scope of support) also utilizes the discussions we have for investigation of issues.

Hello everyone.

A few hours ago my computer was in sleep mode and unplugged when the battery died. Upon plugging it back in, I was met with an empty black screen. I turned it off by holding the power button, but the laptop refuses to boot now.

Upon turning it on, I get the Toshiba start up screen for less than a second before it goes to the Windows Error Recovery Page. Both options (Launch Startup Repair (recommended) and start windows normally) results in a screen that says 'windows is loading files...' with a status bar, then moves on to another screen showing another status bar (this one green with the microsoft corp at the bottom but no graphic) and ultimately to a black screen with a white cursor. From there, nothing works. The same happens if I try to start it in safe mode (with or without networking).

I have a system repair disc for the laptop but I haven't been able to do anything with it.

Fortunately 99% of the info on the laptop is backed up. Unfortunately the 1% that isn't is the most important (class notes for the last 4-5 weeks).

I have the extended warranty on it from best buy that actually expires in 4 days, but I certainly don't want to ship off my computer for who knows how long with those files on there.

Any advice would be tremendously appreciated.

Hello Lenovo users, The sleep mode seems draining a lot a battery. According to my tests, only the screen is turned off. The steps to reproduce the issue0 - start a youtube video 1 - close the lid -> the video is paused(no more sound)2 - open the lid -> the video is resumed3 - close the lid again -> the video is suspended for about 5 seconds before being resumed.... The computer drains about 2 watts in sleep mode : it seems close to the idle battery draining.I really suspect that the computer does only turn the screen off.A T420 laptop drains about 1 watts in sleep mode. In hibernation, the battery draining is about 1 watt. Is there any known bios issue ?

Hi everyone,
I have encountered the problem that when my XPS13 is on sleep mode during the night, in the morning the battery is 10-15% or totally dead. I normally leave it at 100% or 80% so that's a lot of battery life lost. With hibernate mode on, the battery does not drain, however, I am not a fan of hibernate mode as it shortens the lifetime of the SSD and takes a longer time to start up. Normally, I don't leave any high-performance apps open during the night, it's normally only Firefox, Skype, and Word that are left open in sleep mode. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Here's my example:
I have a laptop running Windows 7, I have disabled Hibernation mode.
I put the laptop into sleep mode, and during that time the battery drains completely.
What happens with the save state information that was stored in RAM memory?
I have read on a blog that Windows will automatically switch to Hibernation mode and save it to a local HiberSys.fil, but will that still happen if Hibernation mode has been disabled?
And is the process the same for Windows 10?
Thanks in advance for any information you guys can offer on this situation.

I have a Flex 3 that is only 4 months old and notice that even when the laptop is totally off (powered down, no lights on, not hibernate or sleep) after a day or two the batter charge upon bootup has gone down significantly. I am talking a reduction of say 40%. I am under warranty and I have to run this "Battery gauge reset" routine and do a few other checks before they replace the battery.  Although I can't imagine how looking at windows power options can impact what the battery draw is while the unit is OFF and windows is not running....but guess they have to go through their script. Anyway my question is on this Battery Gauge reset.  I have read things where this takes all night or something and people have to turn sleep mode off on their laptop? That is not in the official instructions so for those that have had this issue or run the reset do you just "press the button" or do I need to make sure the laptop stays awake. Also, what is it actually doing?? Is this type of battery drain a known issue?  To me it sure seems like just a bad battery....Thanks,BJBBJB

I have a Lenovo X1 6th Gen. Ever since I had to reinstall windows (after an seemingly unrelated issue where I had to have the motherboard and battery replaced), my computer battery drains significantly when in sleep mode (30-70% overnight). Calling Lenovo tech support was a waste of time; they said to update the bios (which only fixes a security issue for processors) and put in a new battery (even though the battery is nearly new and in Good health). I already did all of the standard checks, to make sure sleep mode is activated, there are no waketimers, etc., all of which looks normal. I discovered the "powercfg /sleepstudy" tool, the results of which I have attached (converted to a PDF with the relevant sections expanded). This confirms the massive battery draining overnight. It shows the Top Offenders as the USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller (\_SB.PCI0.XHC), then specifically says USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) then Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R). Maybe this means my USB Hub and/or Bluetooth are turning on throughout the night even though it is supposed to be in sleep mode? I do have bluetooth on as I use a bluetooth mouse when I'm plugged in. I just updated my bluetooth driver to see if that helps, though the USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) already has the most recent driver. I'll also try disabling bluetooth before putting it to sleep, however even if that solves it that's not a great fix since I'd have to turn it on and off every day. While testing these, please let me know if... Read more
