Preferred Solution: How Do I Delete A Write Protected File?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i accidently downloaded a virus today and when norton AV detected it, it was unable to delete the file and prompted me to quarantine it. being that i dont want a virus just sitting on my computer, quarantined or not, i opted not to and went to tey to delete it myself. i was unable to because its write protected so i went into the properties and tried to change the write protection but there was no option for that. so then i went into safe mode and ran norton AV again. that didnt work so i tried deleting it myself again and i got the same write protection message. the damn thing just wont go away! i most likely am just overlooking sumething really mundane but can someone help me with this?
thanks

A:(Resolved) cant delete write protected file...

[tsg=welcome][/tsg]

I would go ahead and have norton quarentine the file. It would be much safer than trying to delete it yourself. I belive that once you quarentine the virus there is an option to delete the quarentine file.

Since this is actually about a virus and how to get rid of it, I'm going to request a moderator move this to the security forum. They should be able to provide you with possibly a better answer than what I can.

Good Luck.

My PC has been slow. Yesterday I cleaned it with McAfee and found several files with the trojan namd AdClicker-0. I tried to clean, quarantine or delete them, but it doesn't work because it says the disk is write-protected. The directory is C:\_Restore\Temp and the file name starts with A0010### (the ### is now up to at least 678). NOTE: When I actually go to that subdirectory, I only see C:\_Restore and it has only 4 files and no sub-directories. The 4 files are DISKCFG.DAT, SRDISKID.DAT, VxDMon.clg and VxDmon.dat.

I rebooted last night and went under SAFE mode and rechecked with McAfee and now there are several more files in that directory I can't delete. These are NOT listed as AdClicker-0, but include:
- HideWindow
- ProKill-Term: Has same file name format
- TSADBOT (2 files): Has same file name format
- DSSAgent: Has same file name format
- Adware HuntBar: File name is BTIEIN.0
There are also 11 AdClicker-0 files.

Can you please suggest how to get rid of these? I understand that more files may come from rebooting my PC so I have not done that yet. Thanks!!

I recently started getting the following error message when trying to save to my Floppy 3.5" - "Cannot save file. The location is you are trying to save to is write protected." this occurs from any program. But this does not occur ALL the time, sometimes it does allow me to save to it. And it ALWAYS allows me to read & open from it. I'm wondering if there is a way to lock the Floppy Drive?? Because the message isn't that the "Disk is write protected." it's that "The LOCATION is write protected." Is this possible?? How do I clean the drive??

I'm running WIN98 on a PII 450Mhz PC.
I can still FORMAT floppy's in the drive.
I checked the Device Manager & supposedly the Drive is working properly. I ran SCANDISK & found no errors; I DEFRAG once a week, with no problems.

WHAT TO DO???

Hi everyone.
Hope I'm posting in the proper area.

So what I need is to write protect a file on my laptop, so it is not overwritten.

I'm not sure if I just right click it and make sure the file inside the folder is at "read only" does the job.
I need to update my files but don't want this one replaced.
I see the box under "general" tab has to be clicked until the check mark is on.

And ...please help me understand this part, if I do the above, does it matter if I'm logged in as a a "standard user" or admin.

I understands the permission of the admin has full control so just wandering if using "admin" to login it overrides the "standard user" settings when making changes or update to files...the read only still works ?

Thanks so much.

Hey, I tried searching the forums but couldn't find any posts that have my exact issue. Basically, I have a disk with a file on that I require and when I try and copy it onto my new computer it says that it is write protected. The odd this is that I have copied the same file onto my laptop and it works perfectly fine. I have also tested the same file on my dad's Vista laptop and yet again it works perfectly fine. I just wondered if anyone could offer any solutions to why this is happening on only one computer?

Thanks.

This could be a driver issue or just a computer fault.
I assume you're computer is clean.
Please run a hijackthis log as here

Please DO NOT reply here but in the main forum found on this site's homepage.
When did this become a problem (when was it first noticed?)
Were able to copy before?
Did you install or upgrade any new software or updates?
I commend you on trying this on other computers.
That means that it's the computer's problem and not the CD's or the file is not correct.
Hope this helped and hope this gets solved.

Hi to all

I was wondering if anybody can supply me with a solution to this. I have had this problem for a while now when I try to delete large video files, the files still show up in the recycle bin even after I have tried to shred them using Mcafee shredder. I then do a manual deletion with the files that remain in the recycle bin and they disappear but the system hasn't really deleted the files, I know this because I then click empty the recycle bin and the error message "Cannot delete file DC Access denied make sure the disk is not full or write protected and the file is not currently in use" appears. The DC usually has a number With it like DC1 or DC10 sometimes I get DE.

I am getting the occasional error message when I try to move files from one drive to another or delete folders it usually tells me to makesure the files are not being used by another program or they are write protected. I have to reboot before I can get rid off unwanted large or medium size video files. When I cut certain files and paste them into another drive the file doesn't move into the other drive it just copies into it and again I have to reboot for it to disappear or to delete it from the original drive. It is a real pain in the rear!

I have been in touch with Mcafee and Dell about this and no solution has been put forward . Dell want me to cross their palms with cash and Mcafee checked all their software to makesure their Security Center wasn't the blame. So some know... Read more

Several months ago, I accidently dragged and dropped my PSP file into another folder. I went to windows explorer to drag it back out. Some of the files were fine but others were not. I could not view the contents of the files. So I turned on my external hard drive that I use strictly for a back up in case something happened.....I copied the file back on to my computer. Now, there are many files/folders that I cannot open and I cannot delete them. I get an error message saying the file may be write protected, in use or the disk may be full.
I right clicked on the file>properties and uncheck read only file. Still I can't access those folders at all and I can't get rid of them. Can you suggest something else I can do to either view the contents or delete the folders from my hard drive.
Thanks,

New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve:  When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card.  You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase.   The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried.   And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards.  Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine.   I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06.  HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12.  When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager.  And, of course, the problem still exists.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!  Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards.   Thank you!

A:dv6-7000 can't write to SDHC cards ("write protected" error)

I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.

I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.

What is the product number?

NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

What brand and model is the SDHC card?

A folder and subfoldre remain in my windows xp write to cd temp files. I wrote them to the cd, but they don't go away. I constantly get a message that I have files waiting to write to disk.
When I try renaming or deleting I get an error message telling me they are in use by another program or person.

Any suggestions?

1. Which version of Windows, to include SP, are you running?

2. When did the problem begin?

3. Boot to safe mode.
In the writable CD drive area of "my computer", try to delete the files. They may not show up in safe mode.

3.b.
If that fails, to to the location of the files / folders & try to delete them.

You may have to set your computer to show hidden, system & protected files.
This works for XP & 2000.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx
Also, uncheck "hide file extensions . . "

Also, uncheck "hide protected . . .". Click "yes" when asked if you are sure.
Click "ok".

4. Defrag
If "3" fails, defrag your hard drive.
If defrag is unable to defrag a file, that usually means that the file is corrupt.
Post the report here.

My McAfee virusscan detected the [email protected] virus. I'm unable to do anything with it (delete, clean, quarantine). I get disk is write-protected error. I try to browse to the directory it's in and I can't see it. I've changed folder settings to show hidden and system files. I'm running XP and still can't see the folder it shows up in. I've run viruscan in normal and safe mode. Still can't do anything with it. I've included my Hijackthis log.

A:[email protected] and disk is write-protected error

You are using an old version of Hijack This. You are also running HJT from your Temporary Internet Files folder. It will not function properly from there and it cannot create and restore backups from there. You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Now Click here to download Hijack This again. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Was infected by the matsnu1 virus recently which encrypes and locks all your data files. Got all my files back by running matsnu1decryp.exe You need an original clean file before the virus struck for it to work out how to decrypt all your other files does does save the day. Down side is that you end up with two files. The the original and a locked version. You can just go through your hard drive and delete the locked files but I have a 1TB disk with thousands of files and folders. Since all the locked files begin with "locked" I was wondering about some sort of batch file that would do this for all folders and sub folders. I am sure I remember doing this stuff years ago with DOS but don't remember enough to try it. Grateful if anyone could let me know the DOS command for this or some other way of quickly deleting many files which have part of the name which is common to all files. They all have different extensions so cannot use that option. My drive is H:

A:How do I write batch file to delete thousands of files

At this time there is a lot of tutorials to do *Batch files. I recommend looking at Batch File Help and Batch File Commands to try to do do this. But to delete thousands of files, you can just go to your computer security (such as NOD32 Antivirus) and clean the hard drive of the files. It worked for me when I last had that blasted virus (which was a while back). If you still have problems, contact me again and I'll try to help.

What is the exact message you are getting. It may refer to the images you are trying to burn to disk. In which case right click on the image file and select properties and see what is checked there.

Also if you are using rw cds you may need to format them first. Your authoring software should have an option to do this.

Hello rscadden!

This is unpleasant. I hope the following would help you.

1. Type cmd in the Start Menu
2. Select Run as Administrator
3. You should now see the Command Line Utility
4. Type in DISKPART and hit Enter ( here the values associated with your USB drive could be changed)
5. Type LIST DISK and hit Enter
6. Type SELECT DISK and the number of your drive which is write protected and hit Enter
7. Type in ATTRIBUTES DISK and Diskpart gives the information you need about your drive
If the first line is written as Current Read-only State: Yes, then the drive is write protected.
8. To remove the write protection with Diskpart, type the command ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY. If it works, it should be confirmed by the line Disk attributes cleared successfully.

Good luck!

Hi, I have a problem with a brand new USB stick, PNY 64GB I bought on e-bay about two months ago. It started working properly, I transferred on it about 20GB of my photos. I did not notice anything weird. The pictures were there and I think I could even move them on and off, like copying and deleting. After few days, when I wanted to erase them, there was a message that the device is write protected. USB? There is nothing to switch it for write protection like on SD cards, for example.
From that moment, the device once was recognized as inserted in the PC, other times it was not. I could not delete the images, I could not format the device and even the KillDisc software, after running nearly 5 days without a break could not sort this out. There was an error message at 99% of process and I could do nothing else than to skip it, which resulted in the problem persisting on the USB.
Now I cannot even view the files, despite after this treatment I could have seen them few days ago. The files, after I clicked on them, showed mostly unaffected photos in the views, but when I wanted to see any particular photo, all of them appeared to be damaged - there was a grey area on the majority of the photo, just a thin area of the original picture could be seen on the top of the picture.

So I tried putting the two songs that worked back on, and it wouldn't go on there because it says they were write-protected? How do I fix this?

THANKS!

Hello,

I am trying to point Musicmatch to e:\My Documents\My Music folder for ripping CD's. When I try to select it, MM says that the folder is write protected. I am able to select folders on the c: partition but tnot the e: partition. I've checked all the file properties and they appear identical in every way. Also checked my user priveledges which are the same as the administrator. I've had this problem before with MM on another PC...I'm wondering if it can't select anything other than a c: drive?

Ok, suddenly it is working. Don't ask me why/how. I'd delete the post if I could, but the system won't let me.

A:The Disc is write protected !

Is this on a CD that you have already burned something on and you want to add to it?
Depending on how and what program you used to burn the CD, you probably finalized the disk, which in other terms means it is write protected and cannot be altered

I've been trying to add songs to my Polariod Pocket Jam 3 MP3 player, which is also a thumb drive.

When i try to add items to the disk space, it lets me.
When i try to add MP3s to the MP3 space, it says that my file is write-protected and i need to remove the write-protection. How do i do that? There are no switches, like on or off besides the play buttons. Which i already tried hitting those.

I really want to know how to remove the write-protection.... in english please

Hey,

After EVERY boot since installing Windown 7 64 (previously on Vista 64 with no issues), slave hard drive goes in to read only mode..
After EVERY boot, I have to use diskpart to clear readonly status.

While diskpart sorts the isse on a temp basis, its a real pita to have to do it on every boot. Any ideas on the cause of this issue so it can be resolved once and for all??

Thanks.

A:Slave HDD Write Protected

Copy everything you need off of the drive to another one. Format the drive to NTFS using "quick." Replace files and folders on the drive.

That's the quick and dirty way to proceed on this one.

Before you format and after you copy stuff off of it though, open an elevated command prompt. Type takeown /f D: and hit enter. Change D to the drive letter of the HDD. See if this fixes first.

External 2.5" Seagate Momentus 320Gb HDD.

Recieved from my father-in-law, he says it doesn't work. So I take it and there is no power at all. I take it apart and replace the USB connector and I receive power. However, trying to initialize the disk in computer management windows 7 says "the media is write protected". Computer management labels it as a "CD-ROM", now I don't know if this might be an issue, or it just does that until the disk is initialized. I tried diskpart and modifying 'writeprotect' in the registry but neither worked.

I also loaded up Win XP x64 to try it there, but I received pretty much the same results.

Thanks

Caspersim

A:The media is write-protected

Under Windows 7, launch the registry editor (press Windows Logo + R, type regedit, then press Enter). Navigate then to this registry path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePoliciesRight click on writeprotect and select modify. Set the value data to 0, then click OK. Do the same with ControlSet001 and ControlSet002. Close the registry editor and restart your system. Try then to access your external storage device.

So, I had a virus, it was the Windows XP Recovery fake program one, and it had made it so all of my stuff was hidden. Everything on the C:\ drive was "gone", but was actually still there. I have an external drive for all my media. It was plugged in when I got infected. I have a paranoia with infecting the external drive, so I always unplug it immediately when I see problems. Anyway, I cleaned out most, if not all, of the virus. 90% of my stuff was back to normal. So I plugged in my external, USB, Seagate 1TB GoFlex Desktop HDD. I can see almost everything in the root of the drive fine. Keyword: almost. I could tell something was wrong because my dropbox folder is in the root of my external, and the green/blue badge wasn't there.

So, I went into the folder and there was nothing there. I check the rest of the drive, and everything is hidden. I enable show hidden folders and I can see everything now, and I right click on a hidden folder, properties, and uncheck the Make Hidden box. Hit apply.

"An error occured applying attributes to the file: The media is write protected." Now, I've tried all that I can think of. I tried looking in the drive properties for a "read only" box to uncheck, I tried a cmd command for making all files not hidden, and it doesn't work. There is no physical switch for write protection. What else can I do to make it so I can write to these files/this drive? I need this drive guys...

Thanks for the help
