X1 Carbon Gen 7: Trackpad unresponsive when pressing TrackPoint buttons

Q: X1 Carbon Gen 7: Trackpad unresponsive when pressing TrackPoint buttons

When moving the mouser cursor with the trackpad, pressing or releasing any of the three TrackPoint buttons will randomly makes the trackpad unresponsive 50% of the time. The cursor will eventually resume movement if you keep moving your finger. This makes clicking and dragging fail most of the time. This does NOT apply to:1. Moving the cursor with the trackpad and pressing the lower-left or lower-right trackpad buttons instead of the trackpoint buttons.2. Moving the cursor with the trackpoint nub and pressing the trackpad or trackpoint buttons. To reieterate the problem is exclusively when using the trackpoint buttons WHILE dragging on the trackpad. I'm using Windows 10 Pro with the latest Synaptics firmware installed (n2hgc06w.exe installed firmware pr3013337-tm-p3467-010.img) and the latest Elan driver installed (n2hg404w.exe). This is on a brand new X1 Carbon Gen 7 I received yesterday (model 20R1S04100) with all BIOS updates applied. This *exact* same behavior happens with Ubuntu 19.10 so clearly it is not a Windows 10 or Windows driver issue, but a firmware one.Are there any solutions? It really does make the trackpad unusable...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have an X1 Carbon Gen 3On all my previous Thinkpads wasy back since the T20 I've disabled the trackpad and buttons in the BIOS, but with this one disabling the Trackpad seems to leave the buttons active. I've always hated trackpads, and use the trackpoint or a mouse. I keep hitting the buttons when typing, which causes problems. Don't want tto diasble the trackpoint, just the pad and buttons. Possible? Also, a Windows Control Panel solution won't work as I run Linux.

Hi. After using ThinkPads for a couple of years now I purchased the Carbon 7th gen, and my experience with combining the trackpad for movement of the curser and the physical buttons for the trackpoint has allways been my perfered way to operate. When using the combination on my new Carbon 7th gen I am having some very frustrating sticking of the curser. After some reading around the web I have been thinking that it may be the palm-check functionality that inhibits the trackpad for halv a second. And it is really irritating. I can not seem to find the palm-check function, and I have not been able to fully remove all drivers for the trackpad to reinstall from scratch. The error does not appear in the BIOS where the mouse works fine, so it is not a hardware issue. What can I do?

I have a user that has a 2nd Generation X1 Carbon (the type with virtual buttons on the Synaptics TrackPoint/TrackPad.   The user is complaining that a context sensitivie menu (of the type that a right click would initiate) intermittently is shown when she left clicks.  She normaly uses the TrackPad but does use the TrackPoint on ocassion.  Here's what I've done so far: 1) I initially thought it was the TrackPad and had Lenovo Support replace it.  The problem was reduced but is still occurs. 2) I've installed current UltraNav drivers and updated all other drivers to current levels.  The WIndows 10 is also updated to current patches.  I would try setting the UltraNave to "Click Anywhere" but that disables the TrackPoint feature that is ocassionally used.  Has anyone seen this happen before and know a fix for this?

Hello,I have an issue whith my new X1 Carbon (G7), that my touchpad does not react immediately when I click with the phisical touchpad buttons (ie. the buttons above the touchpad). It is noticable when trying to drag&drop an item, or when trying to use the scrollbar similarly (clicking and dragging). It works well when I use the lower area of the touchpad to "click". For example: I select a file in File Explorer with a click and immediately move my fingers on the touchpad to drag it somewhere else, but it only starts to move after a short moment. It feels like the touchpad does not want to react, but then it suddenly starts to work... I thought of driver update, but Synaptics driver is not available. Maybe it's an issue with the Microsoft drivers?Does anyone else have a similar issue? Thanks

It seems that all trackpoint buttons with design like T480 and T49x (t495 in my case) have a design flaw that a) if the button is pressed lightly you can hear and feel the click but the click is not registered (happens in both windows and linux)b) if the button is pressed in the corner (especially left bottom corner of the middle button) you can hear the click but the click is not registered (it "misfires"). I went to Lenovo showroom and I can confirm this is a design flaw in all trackpoint buttons with the same design as t480 and t49x. On older t-series and x-series thinkpads (specifically t420) this problem does not occur because the buttons are not flat but are very ergonomically shaped so the user always clicks at the "correct" part of the button. For one reason or another, after t430 lenovo decided to switch to flat buttons but kept the pivotted mechanism - this seems to be the root of this issue. I have noticed that X1 Carbon 2019 (gen 7) does have a new trackpoint button design. Does the new design finally solves this issue? Are the X1 Carbon gen7 trackpoint buttons swappable to T495? Will the next T-series come with the same trackpoint button design? Please do not answer that you do not experience this issue (whether on X1 Carbon 2019 or T-Series), many people do not, some poeple just  press the buttons harder/did not use older thinkpads so they assume this problem is inherent to trackpoint buttons/dont notice (lucky you!). The most ... So ive had my t480 for 2 months now. About 1 month ago the trackpad and trackpoint started observing unusual behavior. When i boot the machine up, the trackpoint doesnt work, but the trackpad works except its very laggy. Eventualy when i start using the machine, the trackpad starts to work regularly. Ive checked the bios settings, xorg config files (i use unix based operating systems usually) and ive tried using windows. None of these worked. So it seems like a hardware issue. What do i do?

A:T480 intermitant trackpoint and trackpad.

Hello and welcome,

This is totally out of left field... but I've seen similar behavior when testing live Ubuntu on an X280.

It's fixed (perhaps w/out advanced touchpad features) by adding "psmouse.proto=bare"  (w/out the quotes) to the kernel line in the grub boot stanza.

Can't explain why it would suddenly change on your machine, so as I said... out of left field...

Hi All, Anyone know if there is a fuse that protects both the trackpoint and the trackpad on the T440 ?.  Bought second hand  and neither trackpoint or pad work.  Trackpad shows little wear so I suspect this has been a long term issue.  Booting into Linux there is nothing showing up in the mouse/touchpad settings except when I connect an external mouse, so neither device is being seen which makes me think it might be a fuse ?.  Both are enabled in BIOS and have tried disabling each separately. Also tried a diffferent keyboard, and also disconnected both the touchpad and trackpoint separately.  No life from either. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I've been using this L412, #4403,  for a few years, and quite satisfied with it.Sorry for the long post, I believe the chain of events are relevant to the issue. A few days ago the fan died. I cleaned the laptop less than half a year ago so probably not dust issue. I dual-boot Windows 7 and Linux Mint Qiana and it wouldn't work on either of them, so probably not OS issue. BIOS doesn't have any fan info.Replaced it with a new fan, correct model, everything according to the manual and proper CPU fan replacement practices. After assembly everything was working as usual. Next day everything was working as usual. On its second day the fan didn't turn on when I turned the laptop on. At the same time, trackpad and trackpoint stopped working, volume control doesn't work, and the special Fn keys don't work. The F1-F12 keys work. Insert, Delete, Home, End keys work. The Fn+Insert does a Screenshot as it should, but none of the other Fn special keys work. All that happened at once, from the moment I booted up the laptop. I checked the two OSs again. None of the above work on either of them. Doesn't work during boot-up sequence.Found a way on Linux Mint to turn on the fan to full-power, but it's like that only after the OS reaches the desktop. Auto mode makes it turn 0 RPM, full-power makes it turn at about 435 RPM (very stable). I assume it's not an OS issue because it stopped on both of them at the same time, and it doesn't work during boot-up sequence even though... I bought a Yoga 460 from the Lenovo Outlet (refurbished) and it is completely wrong on specs (wrong graphics, wrong HD, wrong display, etc.). However, moving beyond that for a moment, I am having two issues related to trackpads/trackpoints. I am on Windows 10 and haven't even installed anything. (1) The cursor is arbitrarily moving around the screen. When I turn off the Trackpoint, the cursor no longer moves erratically. (2) Once I turn off Trackpoint, the Trackpad is still super laggy. Moving the cursor across the screen is choppy and slow. The touchscreen, meanwhile, is lightning quick and fine. I updated my drivers and hardware checks out in Lenovo Solutions Center. I am terribly disappointed in the product I have received so far and hope that once I return the product and receive the product I actually ordered.

I have a recently purchased X1 Extreme, with fully updated system (according to Lenovo System Update) and running Windows 10 v. 1903.  Following some lost functionality / freeze-up of the mouse pointer, I first tried deleting the Synaptics Trackpoint in Device Manager, then rebooting. This "fix" worked, but the problem repeated itself.  So I followed the usual path - look for newer drivers in Lenovo Support.  So I looked at the X1E Drivers & Software page and downloaded the TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility from:https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n20g902w.exe Running this program gave me the following error (screenshot should (?) be attached):"Fail to enter Transparent mode" And now the TrackPoint & TrackPad do not work at all.  I am using an external USB mouse ... with my ultraportable laptop.   I searched and searched online, of course, and found a solution seems to have been found for the same problem on the X1 Carbon 6th Generation.  The solution involves downloading the SYNAPTICS Touchpad Firmware from the Lenovo site at:https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-... But ... no such update for the X1 Extreme.   HELP...!!!  Hi, I have a ThinkPad Yoga 12 2nd gen with these specs: -Processor: Intel core i5-5300U-Ram: 8GB-Hard Drive: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD (installed by myself) and SanDisk 16GB PCIe M.2-Screen: Full HD 10 point multi-touch with Wacom digitizer-BIOS: JEET78WW (1.27) The trackpad and trackpoint on this laptop has stopped working the second time and with that, the CPU fan has halted as well, with the backlit function of the keyboard non-working as well. The fan is really important because my heavy-duty use of this machine makes it really hot real quick. My laptop is pretty much useless without it and want a solution for it. I did try to update my BIOS for this because on some forums, this was an issue fixed by updating their BIOS. The system does not recognize the Synaptics trackpad and trackpoint (yes the TRACKPOINT is not working as well) and I have tried downloading the drivers of the trackpad, but to no luck the system did not recognize the trackpad. It seems as if there is a faulty connection physically, but I could not figure it out. The first time it happened, I sent it back for an in Depot Service, but this time around, I am out of warranty and when I asked a ThinkPad Certified Technician, he recommended me to simply buy a new machine rather than getting it serviced because it would cost me more than half as much of the original price of my laptop. I really like this laptop and don't want to change it, but if I have to, the 8th generation Intel pro... My computer had a problem two days after I bought it on the 5th October where the 'back' button was being pressed, making it impossible to browse. It came and went intermittantly. I changed the keyboard and mouse to my old ones and it didn't go away, so it's not a Hardware issue, I don't think.

Now it's pressing the volume button down on the master volume, and also on Media Player Classic but not Winamp. Norton 360 will not run and Adaware and Spybot cannot find anything. It did pop for PartnerBHO last week but it hasn't for a while since I found a detailed guide with how to remove it from the Registry. I have tried a factory reset, but it occurred again soon after.

I would be extremely grateful for any and all help.

The Trackpad is unusable on my Thinkpad Yoga 260. When I try to use it it doesn't respond most of the time. Strangly though when I use the very tip of my finger it does work. To me that sounds like the palm rejection is too harsh. Also the scrolling gesture doesn't work if I place my fingers vertically. It does work if I place them horizontally). The Trackpad is from Elantech. I tried changing the driver settings, re-installing it and nothing helped. The problem with the Trackpoint is that when I try to scroll vertically using the middle button the scrolling symbol often first shows up horizontally and I need to press the trackpoint hard to get it to scroll. This all on Windows 10. I am thinking that this is all a driver issue because I tried out Ubuntu and there it works without problems also uninstalling the driver gets the Touchpad to work but the gestures don't work then. But if this is a driver issue shouldn't everyone have this problem?

Hello everybody!I've just returned from a trip and I am finding some annoying problems on my Thinkpad E490, which is just a few months old.The trackpad appears to be stuck in some way: when I move the cursor (touching the trackpad with one finger, and just touching, not clicking) the machine reads something like a 'double tap to select' command, so the cursor moves but selects everything on its way. E.g.: if I open Paint, instead of just moving the brush, it actually draws, as if it the left botton was held clicked. Moreover, the trackpoint doesn't work, and the setting page to turn it on is grayed out.I have just updated all the drivers from the Lenovo website and through the preinstalled Lenovo software, but nothing has changed. If I use an external mouse there's no problem, but I would like the computer to work properly and not to bring around another piece...Can someone help me figure this out?

Hello There is a feature in Lenovo Ideapad 310 which is being annoying to me: the trackpad is deactivated when I press a key in the keyboard. How this can be configured on Xubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and on Asus M2400Ne with a Synaptics device, looks like this is solely a software issue, but I was not able to find where is this configuration on Windows 10. The Windows 10 options in Configurations-> Devices-> Mouse and Touchpad had no effect, even the option to delay the time between I use the keyboard and click was not effective. Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Mouse had no option to change this too. I have searched and found this topic, but I am seriously concerned regarding messing with Windows registries. I do not want to change registries I do not know because I need the capability to boot the computer after this. I tried to find the registries cited on that topic, but could not find them. Is there a option somewhere which I can deactivate this behaviour? All drivers are updated using the System Update program that came installed on the computer. Windows 10 is updated too. Thank you.

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you again.

As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure

I hope the above information helped you.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

I just received my ThinkPad X1 Extreme and noticed that the trackpoint buttons (above the touchpad) misfire, has anyone noticed the same behavior? Specifically, the button has a "click" feel to it, however half the time the button doesn't register the click. I have to push the button harder for the click to register. This happens for both left and right click. I find this very distracting as I use the same exact bluetooth keyboard on my desktop and I do not have this problem, if i feel a click, the buttons fire. Being I'm so used to this keyboard and I've used lenovo laptops before, this is a significant problem! -Paul

I got my X1 Extreme sealed from my local distributors and I started it, applied all Windows updates and installed everything in Lenovo System UpdateBut the TrackPoint and its left/right mouse buttons don't work at all. I also don't have any options for customizing trackpoint or trackpad beyond windows' basic onesI noticed there are two versions of Symantec UltraNav - one for Windows 10 1803 and one for older versions.I installed the older version, and now I have the trackpoint/trackpad options, but trackpoint is grayed out, while trackpad can be edited. Reinstalling the 1803 (latest Win) drivers again causes the options for trackpoint/pad to disappearI checked bios and tried disabling and enabling all 4 combinations of trackpoint/trackpad, but it did not help.Any ideas what that might be? Since latest Synaptec UltraNav drivers don't display additional options in Mouse Options, I guess it's because they don't install properly (trying to manually click the two apps in C:\Drivers\UltraNav\XXX gives me an error -"Either you need a new certificate installed for this app package, or you need a new app package with trusted certificates."and it fails to install - though the official installer says it installed correctly). So it points to the latest X1 Extreme Symantec drivers being faulty

Hi there, a buddy of mine got a ibm r52 laptop recently from a relative that sat for a few months. anyways, it was given to him and it worked great for about a week then he noticed issues with the keyboard, trackpoint, scroll pad and buttons not working sometimes after boot.
And when they dont work...they dont work. Its not a on and off thing...its either or.

So he has me looking at it...

I dont think its a big issue b/c the keyboard will ALWAYS work when i want to go into the BIOS. I loaded up a Acronis TI boot disk and the keyboard and trackpoint worked fine...but then i tried it again and only the keyboard worked and no trackpoint or pad.

So far i have tried updating the BIOS and embedded controller to the latest with no luck.
Ive also tried a quick fresh install....no luck...still either on or off.

However, if i plug my usb wireless mouse in the mouse cursor works fine...always...

So i guess my next step is to open her up, but im waiting to hear back on any suggestions first....and i got to find a service manual for it...
Thanks for reading.

The TrackPoint buttons on my A485 are behaving oddly. The Left button is acting as a simultaneous left+right click (clicking opens up context menu, but I'm still able to drag windows around, etc.). Right and Middle buttons are not functional at all. It seems to be a hardware issue as it persists across Windows 10 and Linux (I've tested in Arch and Ubuntu). Are there any solutions for this, or should I send it in for warranty?

I just recieved my T480s and I noticed that the left trackpoint button on top of the trackpad is significantly louder than the other buttons. It is making a high pitched clicking sound that is very loud and annoying. Is this a defect or is there any fix for this? Should exchange it for another T480s?

The windows key and "p" button on my keyboard have started pressing themselves, meaning my laptop has been doing a lot of its own thing. When it's not doing this, I can still use the windows key as normal, but cannot use the p button at all - either it presses itself or nothing happens.

To fix this, I tried uninstalling the keyboard drivers and restarting the laptop, which seemed to work for about 10 minutes, until the exact same problems started again.

I'm using Windows 10 on a Lenovo ideapad 100S

Thank you.

I've had this problem before and had a replacement, but in the replaced machine the problem came back. Especially when pressing the button all the way on the left side it is sometimes unresponsive even though it makes a clicking noise. But sometimes it works, so maybe it is caused by dust? Is anyone else having this problem?

Hello community I have this old  thinkpad, which i am very fond of. However, recently the touchpad and trackpoint are acting up.Both right-buttons have stopped working. If i right click on the desktop, nothing happens - until i left-click... then the context-menu keeps popping up until i click on something else. Eventually both left buttons also stop working. I then have to press ctrl alt del and move the mouse over the on-screen-buttons initially they do not respond. after a while they become active again. Then the left button works for a little while until it starts over again... have tried updating drivers, removing the touchpad and trackpoint,  reinstalling windows 10 and flashing newest BIOS without any improvement. External mouse works flawlessly,,, Suggestions are most appreciated :-) Thanks, Kasper, Denmark

Lenovo, I've just upgraded my Yoga 260 to a brand new Yoga X380, which is the most expensive Lenovo computer I've ever purchased since this year's crop of computers is fantastically expensive for some reason.  I really didn't mind spending great money on a ThinkPad though, since it is supposed to be an excellent computer.  I've purchased about 16 of them personally since my first ThinkPad 600E.  However... I'm beside myself with a fundamental flaw in this latest computer: The keyboard and TrackPoint buttons are MUSHY.  That is, the same terrible keyboard and mouse action that you'd get on a Dell or something.  You can feel the rubber movement underneath it.  THIS IS NOT A THINKPAD KEYBOARD.   The trackpoint buttons are mushy garbage, you can't even tell when it is "clicked" or not, they're just soft nothingness. I'm incredibly disappointed.  Can I send this back to you and have you put a REAL THINKPAD KEYBOARD in it?  One that has firm key response?  One that lives up to the ThinkPad name?  I can't stand using this computer with this terrible keyboard.

A:X380 Keyboard and Trackpoint Buttons "mushy" - can I get another one?

Follow up to my own posting, it looks like there are Chicony and Sunrex keyboard and mouse FRUs for this computer. Is one of these keyboards the "real" ThinkPad quality I'm used to and the other less so? If so, can I get these parts exchanged?

Hi everyone,my X1 Carbon 5th gen originally had a loose middle trackpoint button. After developing problems with the left mouse button - it only recognized every second click - I replaced the keyboard bezel. The first replacement had a loose left trackpoint button and some problems with the keyboard. The second replacement also had a loose left trackpoint button and every time I pressed the power button I heard a cracking sound coming from the right corner. The third replacement doesn't show this cracking sound but it also suffers from a loose left mouse button. All of them were made by Chicony (german keyboard layout). This leads me to the question:Does any of you have the same problem with his / her device? Please comment which keyboard you have (manufacturer and layout) and if your device suffers from the same problem or not. Thanks For my part, I'm pretty disappointed by Lenovo's quality control...--resonance
