Preferred Solution: Deleted Bitlocker Recovery Key but I know the Password but its not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I have activated Bitlocker on two identical W8.1 pro machines, and on the first (C1) I have the option to use a password when logging into the computer, but the other (C2) only ask for the recovery key from USB stick. Both computers have no TPM, so Bitlocker is enabled without TPM, but this should give the possibility to start the computers using a password on 8.1 pro.

Can I somehow add a password to C2, or is my only option to remove the Bitlocker encryption and try again?

Hello,
I have a few related questions around BitLocker and TPM.  But first some background, I have Windows 8.1, I have BitLocker turned on, and I have my BitLocker Recovery Key.  I did not manually
initialize the TPM.  I don't recall ever having a TPM Owner password.  But I do see that I can auto generate one, although I have not tried.
1) Is the BitLocker Recovery Key the same thing as the TPM Owner Password?
2) I don't recall ever being provided the TPM owner password during the BitLocker setup?  Where would I find it?  I chose the option to save the BitLocker Recovery Key to my Microsoft Account, but I don't see any TPM Owner Password?
3) I have read that in some Windows OS systems the TPM is automatically initialized, but the TPM Owner Password is not retain where a user can find it.  Is it best practice to even try to obtain the TPM Owner Password if it is indeed not retained on
my machine for user viewing.
I have already spent several hours reading many of your technet articles.  All very helpful, but I did not see any that specifically addressed my specific situation.
4) I am assuming that it would be best if I obtained the TPM Owner password.  Is that not necessarily true?
Thanks

A:BitLocker recovery key not working

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't know anything about the BitLocker which is I understand is bundled with Enterprise and Ultimate Editions. Still I was watching this thread to read about this issue as it developed. As there has been no development for 19 hours on this thread, I now feel that there is no solution for retrieving the system.

You may wait a day or two more to see if some suggestions come up but the only way out now seems to be to clean reinstall Windows 7 all over again. I hope you would not lose too much data. I don't think that the locked up files shall be visible with Ubuntu and Hiren's DVDs.

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

A:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

Hi everyone I am new to this forum. I have a question:
1. I had some confidential data stored on a partition that is not encrypted.
2. I decided to give away my computer to charity so I deleted this confidential data using a simple delete in Windows 7.
3. After that I formatted the whole hard disk and then turned on BitLocker and encrypted the whole drive and then gave away the PC to charity without using a disk wiper program .

My questions is: Is it possible for anybody to recover those deleted files using a data recovery program? I understand that when you do a simple file delete only the address of the data is deleted but not the data itself. If I encrypt the drive, files deleted before encryption do they get encrypted because they are not really deleted?

I received a 2 gb olympus sound recorder which I was asked to restore to normal fuctionality, and restore some mp3s that were presumably recorded on it.

The file system appears to be intact, so I can read from it, but there are two noticeable changes to the device.
First, it seems to have been infected with a version of the RECYCLER virus, which turned all the folders into links which point to the virus itself.
One of those folders are thought to contain the mp3 file in question.
Second, the device seems to have been bitlocker enabled, but it does not need any encryption key.

Now, I don't know, in what order did these events happened; I only need a confirmation, that no data can be recovered once deleted, either before or after bitlocker is enabled.

A:Can deleted files be recovered on a bitlocker enabled device?

there's a chance you can recover the mp3s
you need to rely on professional file recovery tool to get them back. A popular one is Asoftech Recovery. This tool can deep scan your computer and recover your lost files back without requiring extra skills. Here is the steps might be helpful to you:
1. Download this program on your compute. here is the link: Photo Recovery: Restore your lost photo
2. Install and start the program, select the drive where your lost files located, click Start. Now the scanning process will start to search the deleted files. After a while you will then get a list of recoverable files.
3. Press Recover to perform full recovery.
hope this helps..cause the files are infected too.

Hi,

I have a new Windows 8.1 machine and I wish to encrypt the drive using Bitlocker. It gives me 4 options to save a recovery key
1. Save to your Microsoft account
2. Save to a USB flash drive
3. Save to a file
4. Print the recovery key

Option 1 isn't available as I'm logged on using a local account.
i. What is the difference between options 2 & 3? i.e. I could save to a file on a USB drive
ii. Does option 2 mean the USB flash drive cannot then be used for other purposes?
iii. Does option 2 also mean I could use a USB external hard drive, or does it have to be a flash drive?
iv. Once the recovery key has been created, can the key then be copied to other locations or is it only going to work where Bitlocker puts the key?
v. Just thinking about printing the recovery key - can this be used without a password to access the drive, how sensitive/important is the printed key?

N00b questions, I'd very much appreciate your answers.

Thanks

hello and welcome to eight forms , my opinion , difference between 2 and 3 ,2 will create a file and put it on the flash drive for yah,3 you will have to move the file it creates to a flash drive of external drive manually 'I would think you could take the file it create and put it where ever you want , I don't use bitlocker ,if I did I would print it and put away for safe keeping ,like I try to do will all passwords .and if the drive is pass worded that you store the file on ,then yes someone would need the drive password to access the files on that drive, is not that what passwords are for ,I would assume that there are people who could hack your passwords like they do others ,good luck

A:Bitlocker recovery key

Hello @pcsl, Welcome back to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. BitLocker is a Microsoft software designed to protect your PC against offline attacks, unauthorized access typically if your PC gets stolen. BitLocker is full disk encryption software. More info:>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker>> http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10 BitLocker was activated by someone and during the activation time it prompts the user to save/store the key in a safe place. If this is company owned asset/PC, you should turn to your company's IT support guys and they should be able to provide you with the recovery key. If this is your own device, most probably you use a slightly different BitLocker version for certain PCs and tablets known as Device encryption. Probably your key is stored in Microsoft OneDrive with your Microsoft account here :>> https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey More info>> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/microsoft-may-have-your-encryption-key-heres-...>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html Please, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it. Let me know if this works for you ... Hello all, I have a Satellite L675. In the recovery wizard, there is an option for "Erasing the internal hard drive". According to the user manual, I am given the following warning: "Erasing the internal storage drive will delete all data on the drive, including the partitions",

Will this recovery wizard option actually delete the hidden recovery partitions (sda1 and sda3), wiping the entire hard drive, or just the user-created partitions (sda2, AKA C

Thanks for clarification on this.

Here's the problem -
I have a tablet that, when booted, immediately wants the Bitlocker password. The password was lost, so I go the web site to request it, and the email address domain no longer exists, so the password cannot be sent.
I cannot access anything other than the Bitlocker password screen, so how can I open this drive to do anything at all?

I have seen this question asked elsewhere several times, but with different answers...so I just want to make sure my understanding of BitLocker is correct.

In the past, I had used BitLocker on several computers that did Not have a TPM...therefore I had to use a strong 30/40/50+ character password, which was not a problem. I am now working with a new computer that came with a TPM installed...so now instead of a long password, I am restricted to a maximum of 20 characters (even with enhanced PIN's enabled, it still only lets you use 20 characters, which I'm not sure why 20 is the limit?)

From my understanding, even though it is a much shorter PIN, it is more secure than a long password because the TPM only allows up to 32 attempts before locking out...and then lets 1 more attempt every 2 hours...thereby allowing only just over 4,000 attempts per year (according to both basic math as well as a Microsoft article). Thereby making brute forcing the PIN pretty much impossible even if you use just a 6 digit number.

In addition, if you put the hard drive in another computer, the PIN won't work...you would now need to use the recovery key/recovery password...which is also impractical to brute force.

Is my understating pretty much correct? Or am I missing anything? At first it would seem a 50 character password is more secure than a 6 digit PIN number, but after reviewing everything, it seems that the TPM makes the PIN 'stronger' than the password? Is there any benefit to turning ... Read more

A:Recover Deleted Windows 7 Recovery Files from Recovery Drive

You might be able to use a free recovery tool like Recuva or MiniTool Partition Wizard. But there are no guarantees that all deleted files will be recovered or that they will be in a usable condition.

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

MiniTool Partition Recovery

It may be safer to contact HP support and buy a set of recovery disks for your particular machine. I'm taking a guess that you are in India?

Hi everyone,

I'm stuck in a pretty bad situation right now and I have no idea about how to help myself..So recently I've been wanting to 'reset' my Windows 8.1 laptop, & I just cannot because my recovery environment is missing..
First when I got this problem I thought there would be an easy-intermediate level fix like every other problem. (and I love fixing stuff.)

But this one doesn't look like an easy fix or I'm not even sure If there is a fix. So the big mistake I did was, I deleted my "System Recovery Partition".

I have searched everywhere possible and I'm not getting a fix.. I would really appreciate IF YOU GUYS HELP ME!
and another problem is that I don't live in the USA or Canada.I've got a Dell Inspiron 15R 5521, 8GB RAM, intel i5 3317u.

and Dell provides Backup Media to only the people who live in the US and Canada. Please guys, I need a solution.

I have a separate Windows 8.1 Installation Disk, but what I'm scared about is If I install my Windows from the disk, my Dell features would be gone and I don't think I'd be able to have a proper Recovery Environment in the future because this Disk's installation files are nothing related to Dell. Its just a clean Windows installation disk I got from my friend a while ago. I've tried the repair my computer option from the disk and it does not help...

Thank you
