thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

Q: thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

I received my new P50 today. Unfortunately, whenever I type, it creaks where my right wrist rests on the keyboard bezel. Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxxGza7zGRs Has anybody else had this problem? Not only is it annoying (a laptop this expensive shouldn't sound this old and rickety), but I'm concerned this will lead to the bezel eventually cracking as reported in other P50 threads.

I just got my X1 Carbon a week ago, and I'm generally very happy with it.  There just seems to be one problem -- the right palm rest area makes a clicking noise when I rest my palm or wrist on it.  It's about  a 2"x2" area between the trackpad and the fingerprint sensor.  The issue is particularly noticeable right along the edge.  I'm guessing it's some kind of issue with the body itself, but I haven't found anyone else on the Internet with this problem...  Has anyone experienced something similar?  Is this something I have to call Lenovo about and have them take care of it?

A:X1 Carbon Palm Rest Clicking Noise?!

While resting your palm on the touchpad, do you feel that you are clicking a button. So i suppose it might be loose fittings. You may call lenovo.

Hello, just received my new laptop, Inspiron 17 5000 series, and the trackpad needs to be replaced.  Dell already sent one, but didn't include any kind of instructions for replacing it!!  So, does anyone know of a tutorial link for this?  I would really appreciate the help!  Thanks in advance, hope to get a reply soon!!

A:Looking for help replacing track pad palm rest on Inspiron 17 5000series!

This is not that easy a repair - why did you not just send the system for repair (or replacement, if it's brand-new)?
The service manual is here:
www.dell.com/.../manuals
However, note that while they sent the part, if anything is damaged in the process of replacing it, the damage will not be covered by warranty.

Hi, I have Lenovo ThinkPad T540p at work. Today I heard clicking noise when I moved my right arm from palm rest. I checked with my index finger and noise was heard when I touched and release area around the front edge of palm rest in a length of 1-2 centimeters. The noise is very annoying. What can be cause of it and how to surpress that noise? I can not remember if I heard this noise before - maybe I heard it without paying any attention to it. Last friday my laptop bag overturned while placed on the desk with laptop inside and secured with belts so I can not believe that event can be the cause of depicted noise. Honestly I am very dissapointed with quality of plastic generally speaking. I take care of this laptop as if it is living being so this problem comes out of nowhere. I had "bad" laptops compared to this at my former work but even those had better plastic. To slightly press palm rest and release it and hear clicking noise of plastic is completely unacceptable for laptop of this price. How on earth this is really true: The T540p meets eight US military-spec tests for ruggedness, durability, and quality: high pressure, humidity, vibration, high temperature, temperature shock, low pressure (15,000 ft), low temperature, and dust. In addition, innovative roll-cage technology and glass-fiber reinforced plastic add extra strength and rigidity. I just want to solve this problem without further "damaging" awful plastic on this laptop.

I know this post sounds weird. Just sharing that maybe somebody out there experienced the same.
After 6 months of all day usage my inspiron 7347 get dirty, yellowish stain in the palm rest. I noticed it when it's placed under cool white light. It is ugly, and i keep thinking that it will get more yellow as it ages under my palms.
The material used in 7347 is plastic with aluminum like finish in a rubbery matte feel.
So I decided to give it a try, using soft sponge, dish washer soap to keep the sponge foamy, but not soaked wet. I rubbed on the palm rest, and the stain is gone.
Hope this helps to make your Inspiron 7000 series last longer.

Hi, I am currently using Dell Inspiron 14 7460 (for about 2 weeks). Lately, I just saw the left palmrest (near the touchpad) is slightly opened (it is visible when I use my laptop in a well-lit environment). For more details and pictures, please refer to this link:

Hi all,I have an issue with my new Inspiron 15 (7569).  If I am sitting in bed, for example, my palms put a little more pressure on the palm rests.  The enclosure actually presses down the left-click button!  This causes two separate use issues for me.  First, it makes it so that there is no "click" to the button when I want to use it (because it is already in the down position, being held by the enclosure), and second, it causes my cursor to jump around... the cursor/pointer may just be somewhere on the screen out of the way while I type, for example, but when the enclosure "presses" the left button it forces focus to wherever the pointer is at that moment. This is clearly a hardware flaw, as there should be some internal support closer to the buttons to keep the palm rests/enclosure from pressing down on the button.
What recourse do I have at this point?  How do I know that if I exchange this for a different model I won't just have the same issue again?

A:Dell Inspiron 15 (7569) Weight on palm rest presses button.

I have this exact same issue on my Dell Inspiron 7569.  I have to hover my hands over the palm rest instead of letting them rest, like normal.  It's so annoying.  Dell, please respond to this!
UPDATE: So it's not the weight alone of wrists/palms on the palmrests that causes the problem.  I noticed that if I used a lap desk, or used the laptop on the table, the bottom of the laptop would be prevented from flexing, and the problem would not occur.  More investigation showed that I could make a track pad click by either slightly deflecting the laptop, pushing the outsides slightly down and the center slightly up.  The same behavior occurs when you use your thumbs and index fingers to squeeze slightly from both above and below the laptop, about 2 inches to the sides of the center of the trackpad.  Both of these tests emulate what's occurring when you use the laptop on your lap directly without a rigid surface to support it.
It's a hardware problem... no idea how to fix it.  Dell?

Hi everyone!I was wondering if anyone has experienced the problems I am about to describe with their thinkpad X1 carbon 6th Gen. I bought mine a few weeks  ago and was really happy with my choice until I noticed that everytime I lay my wrist below the keyboard it makes a sharp clicking noise. You can feel it and hear it everytime you push on that spot. Also, I noticed the painting is peeling off from the bottom part of the computer that heads toward my chest when using. It is brand new and I use a waterfield sleeve protection for the laptop all the time and take really good care of it (I've only had it for two weeks!). Has anyone experienced these problems? Michael

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

I am also running a Thinkpad T400 with an ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series with Windows 7 32 bit. I cannot uninstall the current driver (8.56.1.13) nor can I update using the ATI driver package.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,  I'm having an issue on my T400 (Windows 7, 32 bit) where the laptop shows that it is plugged in but not charging.  I've tried the usual steps with removing the battery from device manager and rebooting, but it doesn't seem to work.  I've also tried using a different power supply and I still get the same result.  I also get the beep when I plug/unplug the power.    The computer will run with just AC power connected to it and it does seem to run on the battery.  I didn't run it too much because the battery is at about 12%.  Will a new battery fix the issue?  I got the laptop as they were getting rid of it at work, the battery has been working fine for almost a year and I just noticed the issue the other day.

Hi all, I have a thinkpad 1411 i series from 1998. A workhorse. I always use the machine plugged in. Original battery.

Was getting a battery bad/drive OK message, then I would hit enter and it would boot up.

Now will not boot at all.

Can't it work with just the plug or do I have to buy another battery?

I just use it for a word processor and family photos now. but I like it for that. I have a dell dual core /quad for the web.

Shouldn't it work with just the plug, I don't get it?

Thanks for advice

Not all notebooks will work without a battery. I have a Toshiba A70, and had issues a while back which I thought was the battery, so I tried running without it. Try taking the battery out and see if it starts. Keep in mind that it's a good idea to cycle batteries in notebooks even if they are always plugged in, they should be discharged maybe once a month or so.
Your particular error seems to be coming from the CMOS, maybe you can look at that, considering its been 11 years, maybe its due for a change.

Typical fix for this on non-OEM system would be to run the fixmbr command from the XP Recovery Console.

Since your system is an OEM system...I'd suggest following the advice at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62979 .

This one sounds like something out of the twilight zone. Got my IBM laptop back from my girlfriend she neglected to tell me that it wont boot past the blue screen stage where u get to logon. I have tried to do a thorough inspection of the machine and boot and reboot to safe mode with and without command prompt, Last known good configuration etc..nothing works.

Now i was able to get to the command prompt and take a look at the root directory and something struck me as odd. There is no Windows folder or even a Winnt folder. My documents folder isnt there either...in fact there were no other directories. What i want to know firstly is, is there such a thing as hidden files and folders in DOS? Secondly what the bloody heck can i do to fix this? PS, the XP cd that came with the laptop is unfortunately pretty scratched up and only good for a coaster which i have been using it for incidentally.
HELP!!

Thanks
Erick

Hi, T400 running Win7. I've this battery pack 57Y4536 which won't work anymore. It wasn't in use for months so it may have drained out I guess.  The power manager says it can't detect the battery and marked as "error" Is there any way to revive the battery? Thanks

I left my T400 on overnight running on battery (clearly not the brightest idea), and now it won't start up.  The plug and battery lights do illuminate when I plug it into an outlet; when I turn it on, the num lock and caps lock lights illuminate briefly, and the power status indicator light illuminates.  It makes a few whirring noises, and then just sits there.  Does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this?  Thank you!

Did you ever get a response at all or figure out what was going on? This same issue just happened to me.
