Portege M780 - Prompted for supervisor password after sleep

Q: Portege M780 - Prompted for supervisor password after sleep

Hi all,

I think thereis a bug in the M780 BIOS. I have set only a Supervisor password on all 100-odd machines that we have. There are no other security settings enabled and when a machine goes into deep sleep (ie. after a few hours) they get prompted for the Supervisor password when waking the machine.

All machines are running the latest BIOS (2.10) and WIndows 7 64bit. As we are a school we want to prevent the kids from booting from CDs etc.,

I have configured the Security section of BIOS like so;

User Password: Not Registered
Supervisor Password: Registered
HDD1/SSD1 Password Mode: <User Only>
HDD User Password: Not Registered
TPM: <Disabled>

Any help or confirmation of the issue would be appreciated. Cheers!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

UPDATE: I have since discovered that the problem exists when waking from hibernation, not from sleep. I have disbaled this via Group Policy for the "Balanced" power plan which has resolved my immediate issue, although this behaviour still shouldn't occur.

Hi,

yesterday i set the bios/supervisor password.

When i now turn on the notebook, i can see the Toshiba - Leading innovations screen and then it goes dark and won't boot any further.

The harddisk / fan / graphics card etc is working - but i don't see anything nor do i get some kind of prompt or shell or whatsoever.

I tried all those "Press, ESC, Press F2, Press F1, Press INS" stuff, nothing worked out.
I removed the battery for several mins while pressing the power button, nothing.

Maybe somebody has some kind of clue whats wrong with this maschine....

A:Portege R830-1EE: Supervisor / Bios password - No Boot or login prompt

Hi

Did you use some high ASCII character like ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ? etc in your BIOS / Supervisor password?

In the past the usage of such characters prevented the notebook from booting up.
In such case you had to contact the service partner in order to solve this problem.

It is supposed to spring out when you push it.

However when you push it (it still moves) then it wont come out.
I couldn't dislodge it from the battery bay either.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Hmm? maybe the spring inside the bay where the pen is located does not work properly? Maybe you could use some tools like pair of tweezers in order to remove this pen from the bay?

Hello,
I saw the following link http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows10/ which give dates for release of a "full set of WIndows 10 Software components" for some models- probably recent ones . This does not cover the Portege M780 I have or indeed any Portege models far as I can see.

Windows 10 upgrade would be available from microsoft anyway but is there any advice re doing this upgrade from Toshiba or has anyone ese done this or something similar. I am especialy keen to know if the fingerprint reader is supported.

Thanks,

Clem

The newer Portege's support Win10, Z930, R30-A.

Hi

I reinstalled windows 7 pro on my Portege M780 and i need the Toshiba Pre installed Apps
It was 7 Pro 32bit and I clean installed 7 Pro 64bit Iv grabbed all thats offered in the download section for 7 64bit but not all is there.

I used to have cam , screen rotate control , DVD app plus more Im not even sure what as i only got it the day before installing windows :(
If anyone could help that would be awesome Thanks

PS i cant get the finger scanner to work right as well, once i installed it and set-up com wouldnt start after log-in screen but did in safe mode so i disabled it in device manager. Any ideas Anyony Cheers

I tryed getting the Pre installed apps from recovery but with no luck :(

A:I need Pre installed software for Portege M780

Original recovery image that you got with your notebook contains operating system, all necessary drivers, Toshiba specific tools and utilities, and of course some additional software like DVD player, antivirus application, trial Office.

When you do own OS installation on Toshiba download page you will find drivers, tools and utilities only. Such additional applications will not be offered. This you can have if you install original recovery image.

At the end one very important info: Toshiba offer all this for supported operating systems only so if you cannot find it on download page I can just say ? bad luck.
In this case you must try to find right drivers offered for other models but with the same hardware components and this is pretty complicated.

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Portege M780-10U running Windows 7 (x32) SP1.
I have updated all the drivers for the display, bios, etc.

Whenever I connect my Acer G235H display the laptop freezes after about 3 hours of operation.
Nothing is logged anywhere, just a complete freeze that requires a hard reset. The CPU fan then runs on full power once the freeze occurs.

I am not running any special graphics applications when it crashes just standard Office 2007 and IE8.
I have isolated the freezes down to the display by using an HP L1906 monitor and had no freezes for 2 days.

I have tried the ACER G235H display using both VGA and HDMI and i stilL get freezes.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can resolve this?

Thanks

A:Portege M780-10U frezees when using external LCD

>I have isolated the freezes down to the display by using an HP L1906 monitor and had no freezes for 2 days.
For me it?s really hard to believe that an external monitor could affect the notebook functionality but it seems that your notebook freezes only using this special monitor (G235H).
Using the HP L1906 monitor everything is ok. Is it right?

Hmm? did you connect the L1906 monitor to the same port like G235H?
Maybe there are differences between external resolutions?

Sorry mate, but it?s really difficult to say what could cause this? maybe it?s a high temperature issue and maybe its pure chance that the notebook freezes using this external monitor.

As they seem to be similiar to the M750, maybe it is the same with the M750 and someone can answer this question. Could not find a service manual for the M750/M780 either.

Thx

User manual is not interesting for you? Right???

Well, if you check the user manual, you can find an exact description how to replace both memory modules with a lot of pictures.

Btw, the other slot is placed under the keyboard.

I'm happy with my M780-10V and don't plan to change it too soon but would like to enhance it.

I've upgraded RAM to 8GB though windows 7 32bit only recognises 2.9GB - any thoughts?

Has anybody tried going for Windows 7 64bit which should make more RAM available.

Also has anybody swapped out the drive and installed an SSD, I'm think 250GB, I guess that should give it a real boost.

As to swapping the i5 to an i7, I'm not sure that would be worth it - seems an expensive change - as the i7 doesn't seem to add that much looking at the various comparison sites.

Thanks in advance.

A:Portege M780-10V upgrade questions

I've upgraded RAM to 8GB though windows 7 32bit only recognises 2.9GB - any thoughts?

Win 7 32bit as well as other 32bit systems recognize only 3.2GB RAM. This is the 32bit limitation
Therefore its recommended to use 64bit system in case you’ve got more than 3GB RAM
The Portege M780-10V supports up to 8GB RAM therefore the memory upgrade is possible.

Also has anybody swapped out the drive and installed an SSD, I'm think 250GB, I guess that should give it a real boost.

The upgrade from HDD to SSD is the best move you could do… the performance boost will be noticeable. I did such upgrade on my Tecra notebook and I’m very happy with that…

As to swapping the i5 to an i7, I'm not sure that would be worth it - seems an expensive change - as the i7 doesn't seem to add that much looking at the various comparison sites.

In my opinion this is not necessary and I would not recommend you to upgrade the CPU. First of all Toshiba as well as other notebook manufacturers don’t support such CPU upgrades. Nobody knows if such upgrade would not affect the notebook functionality and in worst case the BIOS would not support a new CPU.
At the other hand you will not notice the performance boost using new CPU… in my eyes such upgrade would not be very useful.

Seems Toshiba laptops have a bit of a history with this type of <software> problem.

There is a suggestion that I should re-load the bluetooth application pack.
Trying to speak to Toshiba tech.support in the UK but they are on a bank holiday.

Has anyone else had the same problem and do you have any known solutions to the problem?

Thanks a mill! Katie x

A:Portege M780-102 cursor jumps erratically around while typing

Hi mate

I read also about such cursor issue on different notebook models (from different manufacturers).
But in most cases the users didn?t notice that the touchpad has been touchpad accidently while typing.
You said you have checked this? hmm? but anyway, try to disable the touchpad while typing just for testing purposes?

Furthermore some people said that BIOS update might be helpful too?
So if newer BIOS is available, update this!

Question re Toshiba portege M780-106 touchscreen laptop:
We have a problem with the mouse cursor lagging behind the stylus position.

This gap increases dramatically as the velocity of the stylus movement increases.
As we are running a tracking task with the stylus this is problematic.

We are running the task in Windows 7 using python 2.6 with primarily pygame library functions.
Is there a way to disable the process that produces this discrepancy between stylus and mouse pointer?

Any help much appreciated!

As above really. Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems.

I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password.

Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '\' or 'SYSTEMNAME\' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

When trying to choose (with F12) a different boot device than 1st harddrive (e.g. CD/DVD, USB-Stick, SD-Card), the system starts only form the built in harddisk. When trying to enter the BIOS (with ESC followed by F1) one can see just a very small selection just of the 1st BIOS page.

All further details (e.g. Boot Priority/Sequence) are not accessible. There is NOT set a User password and/or a HDD password.
When pressing the INS key before switching on the notebook, it asks for a supervisor Password. Someone has obviously set it and I don't have it. With the normal Toshiba Utilities (e.g. "Assist") it's not possible to remove it, also the LPT-Port connector or the Boot diskette (1st 5 Bytes of 2nd sector modified) doesn't help.

Hi, I didn't really find the answer I was looking for so here I go: I bought thinkpad yoga 460 that was previously in demopool(nbwn.de). After using it for 4 months I noticed that it has a BIOS supervisor password set and I couldn't get in BIOS. I sent it back, but none of the passwords they usually set worked nor did the one that was given by the previous customer. I definitely haven't set a password of my own, nor could anyone have done it while I have been in possesion of the laptop.  The interesting thing is that when trying to enter BIOS, it asks for fingerprint first which is mine interestingly, although I set one only in windows and after that it asks for the supervisor password. So is it possible that I have unknowingly set the password for BIOS through windows?

In the Thinkpad BIOS, is there any way to access the pre-boot environment with only the supervisor password if a HDD password is also set? I note that at least on my machine (X1 Carbon 5th Gen), with both a supervisor password and a hard disk1 user password set (I have set different passwords for each), I am always prompted first for the HDD password to enter any pre-boot environment, including:BIOS (pressing F1 at Lenovo screen)the boot order menu (pressing F12 at Lenovo screen)the boot options menu (pressing enter at Lenovo screen)However, for any of these functions, I am not accessing the disk drive and not booting into the drive, but rather trying to access only the pre-boot environment in the BIOS. So why does the system ask for the HDD password? I can see a scenario where perhaps one needs to boot via USB for troubleshooting, or the HDD password is forgotten or some other issue where only the BIOS needs to be entered and not the disk drive.  Is there perhaps a certain key press at the HDD password prompt to switch to a "BIOS only" mode? (I tried the various function keys at the disk drive password prompt, but it didn't do anything) Thanks in advance for any assistance!

My last Thinkpad W500 had an option in the BIOS for the Hard Drive password.  I see no option in the P70 UEFI Firmware.  Does the Supervisor password automatically  send a password to the storage devices?  If so, does it work through the Intel RST RAID1 as well? I'm running four storage devices in my P70.  Two Samsung 850 EVO M.2 using the Intel RST RAID1 for UEFI, Windows, and /boot for Linux, and two 960GB SanDisk SSD's for my Linux rpool ZFS mirror. It would just be nice to know for certain that the passwords are enabled on the drives now as well.

A:P70 Supervisor Password For Storage Devices

Supervisor password is not related to HDD password.

From my quick check here, as long as "RAID Mode Option" is set as "Enabled" and "M.2 SSD" (regardless of whether drives are configured in an array or not), the HDD password option goes away.

A:Do you have a vb script to set a new BIOS Supervisor Password?

It is not possible to set a password with the WMI interface when a password does not already exist.  This is for security reasons.  Otherwise it would be possible to have malware which runs in Windows, sets passwords that you don't know, and locks you out of your system. It can be done in DOS.  Some customers boot a DOS disk as part of their unboxing procedure to set a known password.  Then they can change it by WMI later (if they want to).  Some large customers order their systems from the Lenovo factory with a known password installed, talk to your account manager if you fall into that category.

Hello all,

I'm in a bit of a bind. I'm working on a computer that needs the boot order changed, so I can install an OS upgrade (2000 to XP Pro) and I can't get into the BIOS without the supervisor password. The individual who had/worked on the computer before has long gone, so that option is out. The default stuff won't work (admin, exec, password...and so on). I seem to remember that you can dislodge the battery, or switch the jumpers (although different motherboards might have different stuff), but It's been several years since I've had this problem and I can't remember the solution.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

A:BIOS lockout...need supervisor password

Not quite sure that'll be crackable. It'll depend on the mobo.

Hello,I've recently bought a used Lenovo ThinkPad L440 and it has a supervisor password which prevents me to modify anything on the BIOS. Is there a legal and easy way to clear it since the former owner doesn't know the password either? Thanks.
