Slow dial up speed on brand new computer

Q: Slow dial up speed on brand new computer

I live in an area where DSL is not available, so I'm using a dial up connection (AOL 9.0) Our old computer (Dell Dimension 4100, Win ME) would get anywhere from 50 to 53.3K speed and when it wasn't locking up had reasonable internet speed. We recently purchased a new computer (E machines C2825) and the speed rarely reaches over 35K using the same access numbers. It has XP home. Is there a way to get the speed up? Even though it is a 56K modem, is there something that would limit the speed, and if so can I change it? Or should I return the E-machines while it's still under warranty and quit while I'm not so far behind?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Is this the exact same phone connection that you used before?

A lot of things can affect the speed, but few have much to do with the computer or modem themselves.

The phone connections must be in excellent condidion since even a small problem with a bad connection or corrosion can make a lot of difference to a dialup connection.

When I first moved into "this old house", 35 was all I could get. But unscrewing all the phone connections and cleaning to bare copper, from the computer to the box outside gave me solid 53.3 connections after that. Even the connections on the modem itself and the wire going in can be cleaned with a Q-Tip and alcohol.

In the Control Panel under modem settings, some say speed can be achieved by turning off flow control (hardly a problem with new computers---old ones sometimes couldn't keep up) and be sure compression is enabled.

Check that all your modem speed settings are at or above its capacity, and look for the newest driver you can find.

If you like the computer and it works well, I certainly wouldn't consider returning it for this alone. New modems can be gotten for $10.

The number of other devices connected to the same phone line should also be limited. The more answering machines, extensions, caller ID's on the line, the slower it will be.

And limit the length of phone cords. If you have 20 feet of rolled up phone wire behind the computer, get a shorter wire .

That's all I can think of at the moment. Others may have more to offer.

Good luck.

Hi all.
I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite C50-A02-V running Windows 8 Home Edition.

I've never really had the fastest internet, but its always been alright for what I used it for... untill i purchased this computer. Suffice it to say the internet is... a little below sub par.
Heres a speedtest...

My phone, My sisters Laptop running windows 7, even my old 2006 IBM running Linux all are getting speedtests with Download speeds of at least 5-6Mbps from the same router, with at least 5-6Mbps.
And yet here I am, brand new computer in hand, with memories of dialup floating through my head.

I've been on message boards trying to find an answer to this for hours. I've changed the Wireless settings to not turn off the Wifi. I've checked Toshiba's Website and downloaded the latest WLAN driver. I deleted literally every last ounce of bloatware from the computer when I got it, so I don't THINK that's an issue. There's no torrents or security running either.

Basicaly I have no idea what to do.

Now the weird thing is if I turn the computer on, and do a speedtest right away, I'm getting a fast Ping and a download of 5 Mbps instead of the 0.6...

Any Help or ideas on what to do?

A:Impossibly Slow Wifi Speed, Brand New Computer.

Did you try an ethernet cable instead of wireless? If that works normally, read on...

I had a problem like this many years ago, it turned out to be something wrong with the drivers for the network card I was using. To fix it, go into device manager and find the entry for the wireless network adapter (eg "xyz wireless network adapter"). Right click on the adapter and select "remove". Reboot the machine. It should detect the adapter as new hardware and reinstall the drivers for the network hardware. Of course you may need to supply the drivers at this point if they are not available on the machine.

This is somewhat techy and if you are not a level 2 nerd you may want to get a qualified friend to help...

I have speed dial set as my start page. I've got 9 sites on Speed Dial. I don't use custom pics, although I do use a custom skin.

Every now and then when opening Opera, it 'freezes' at the Speed Dial tab for 3-7 secs before displaying all tabs/windows. When it 'freezes', all tiles are the + symbol and are blank.

Once it 'unfreezes', all is normal.

It seems to happen sporadically upon a new start. Once the browser is open, the issue does not reoccur.

It's been going on for the last 3 weeks to a month - same version, same skin.

Basically, one day it just started happening without any changes to the browser. Prior to this, it loaded instantly 100% of the time.

I've cleared cookies/cache the normal way and it's still happening. I've culled a few sites from speed dial without a positive result.

Any ideas fellow Opera users what could be the cause of this sudden sporadic Speed Dial freeze?

A:Opera 11.62 + slow speed Dial

I haven't experienced it myself, but perhaps the issue is with the image that Opera must call to display, or the autoreload feature. Both these attributes are set by the webpage. Have you added any sites recently that might be the cause? If the problem happens regularly enough, you could remove any new sites one at a time. It could be an issue with an older entry as well. Do you have the entries set to reload? A Guy

Ive got a new NETGEAR WG511 Wireless PCMCIA Card 54Mbps,
WinXP Home SP2
A Wireless Network using NETGEAR Router...

I have it up and running...BUT

when connected it shows speed of around 36/48Mbps (even if right next to router)
Iam using the laptop in same room 5ft away and when i open firefox it slows down to 11mb

Whilst this wud be ok for speed it seems that its not...My internet is 2Mb and 0.5Mb after 6pm
but with this wireless card its just a little faster than dial up (70-90kbps)

what can this be? ive enabled most internet related services..?

thanks

A:Solved: NETGEAR WG511 is slow (dial-up speed)

Hi,

I maybe misunderstanding but if your ISP limits you to a 512K connection after 6pm 70-90Kbps is slightly faster than you should be getting.

The connection speed to your router won't matter (unless it drops below the ISP connection speed).

when bandwidth tested through www.speedtest.net shows normal download speeds:5.1mbps however actual download speeds are around 12-100kbps, other computers on this network are downloading properly. Troubleshooting steps I have already taken: Tried different router, tried different cables, changed NIC card, disabled QoS packet scheduler, moved computer to different location entirely (friends internet tested at 16mbps on speedtest.net, download speeds were around 600kbps, all other computers in the house were downloading at acceptable speeds), updated drivers

for reference these are my computers specs:

I just got a new Lenovo Ideapad y500 a few days ago, and the internet speed has been incredibly slow from the get-go. Loading images on pages takes way longer than it should, I can't watch streaming videos that last 4 minutes without it pausing to buffer every 5-10 seconds. It took about 20 minutes to download a 50mb file. My 4 year old laptop loads everything way faster, especially when downloading files. I did a ping test on both and everything was about the same, except I got a download speed of .75 mb/s on the new laptop, and between 12-17 mb/s on the old laptop. My new laptop is up to date with the wireless drivers and I'm not sure what else to try to do to fix it.

Here are the speeds of the new laptop from speedtest.net
Ping: 25 ms
Download speed: .75 mbps
Upload speed: 4.10 mpbs

Edit: my wireless card is Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230 and the router is linksys wrt150n wireless-n

My sister just got a brand new Dell Desktop......she uses a dial-up connection with a local ISP and had no problems with her old computer. Dell tech support has been of little help although they came out and even tried to correct situation putting a new modem in. It came pre-installed with AOL 9.0 and I am wondering if that is the culprit.....something is running in the start up menu referencing AOL......I am ever so confused! It also came pre-installed with Earthlink but do not believe that is the problem. We uninstalled AOL leaving the cab files but still the same error message when trying to connect to the internet. Modem Helper and Hyper=Terminal also show the same error message. Have tried everything to no avail and could really use some help.

Thanks in advance!

I use burn4free and always use the same Memorex brand DVD+ 16X Discs. Yet most of the time they will only burn at 6X and every now and then at 12X and sometimes at 8X. Never at 16X even though I always have it set to Max speed as this is my only option. It doesn't seem to matter if I have any other programs running or not since I always close everything while burning. I failed at finding any info on this anywhere online as this is quite a difficult thing to search up. Help me please?

A:The same brand dvd's burn at max speed sometimes and a slower speed other times?

Poor quality media. Try a different brand type of media.

Quality media is recommended. For SL DVD, this would be Verbatim or Taio Yuden. For DL DVD, Verbatim only. Anything else is trial and error and will vary based on your burner and firmware version.

Recently bought a Dell Optiplex 3010 with the following:

Core i5
6GB Ram
Intel Graphics
64-bit OS; Windows 7

I use ZERO ram-intensive programs (basically Exchange-based Outlook, a CRM system and Chrome).

The computer takes 5-7 to fully start-up and its generally very slow.

Any tips/help is greatly appreciated?

A:Brand new computer. Why is everything running so slow?

What is a "CRM system"?

Did it boot up and run slow from the start? or only after you added your programs?

Does the OptiPlex (which is a business model) have the Dell Recovery Partition, like the "consumer" model PC's do? If it does and it ran OK initially, I would really consider a complete reinstall back to the original factory condition.

If it ran slow from the start, and it was purchased from Dell, it wouild be best to contact them as only Dell support can do any warranty.

I just got this computer about 2 weeks ago, and ALREADY I am getting lag problems. I have the CPU widget, and when I am JUST on the web browser, I get about 50-70 CPU being used. My specs are:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+
Nvidia GeForce GT 430
And if it helps, I AM using an external HDD for most of my programs, since the original PC came with only 250 GB.

A:Computer becoming extremely slow. It's brand new.

Which applications do you have installed to the external?
What connection type and speed is the external HDD?

I'm not sure I would install applications to a USB 2.0 drive. Especially if the applications are used frequently. I know I wouldn't if the application installs memory resident system monitors that run 24/7. However I usually disable these monitors from running at startup as well.

I have used Add/Remove to uninstall "Find Junk Files" but get an error msg saying Install Log files could not be opened. ViviCAM gives me an "Installshield Setup Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close" message when I attempt to uninstall it.

Do I have a problem other than not enough memory?

I followed all the steps and updated everything except Microsoft Net Framework and IE 7.

Thanks for all your help!

Hello, I just bought a new computer and I believe I am well above the requirements to run Crysis well, yet it is running very choppy and the frame rate is horrible when the graphics are placed on High or Very High. Here is my system info:

HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.6GHz
Memory: 6144MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 6134MB RAM
Page File: 1953MB used, 10314MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
User DPI Setting: Using System DPI
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)
DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled
DxDiag Version: 6.01.7600.16385 32bit Unicode

NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M - 1Gig Memory

I went to the http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com website and ran the "can you run it" test for crysis and it said I failed based on the i7 processor being to slow. I was under the impression that while the i7 was 1.60GHz, the fact that it had 8 cores would make up for this? I bought this computer to be used as a (relatively)inexpensive gamer, so Is there some tweak I can make to the system or is it time to return the computer and buy something else?

Thanks very much,

Paul

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute filesI would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Now I am back at my house running a cat5 through a router and I am down to 130 KB/s. What the hell? I was in awe when I saw this and still am, whats going on?

A:running extremely slow internet on brand new computer

Do you and your girlfriend have same ISP, and same internet subscription packages ?
What kind of internet connection do you have ?
If you are getting very slow speed than advertised by your ISP, then call them now.

What is the rated speed of your connection as described by your ISP (internet service provider)? See what http://speedtest.net/ says. What browser are you using? If you're using IE8, I recommend trying Firefox.

I have a brand new computer I assembled myself with some of the newest parts available.
I also just recently got a new ISP, the speed is up to 18mbps.
My laptops are all connected through wireless and are getting anywhere between 15-18mbps while my desktop which is connected with an ethernet cable is getting around 6-7mbps.
I have all the latest drivers and did scans with Bitdefender and Advanced System Care and there were no problems with viruses/malware/etc.
Also, I'm not running any bandwidth consuming programs (uTorrent, etc).
I have 8GB of RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

What seems to be the problem?

I have Compaq Presario with Windows xp and use Dial Up service while in AZ.
This may be a software problem, ???

Sometimes I dial up and the speed is 21.4 kbps so I redial again.

Sometimes I dial up and the speed is 41.2 kbps

Usually I dial up and the speed is 42.6 kbps (fastest I ever get)

Question- Should I redial when I get 41.2 kbps or does the 1.4 kbps make that much difference?

A:dial up speed

i used to get different speeds between 33k and 45K when I was on dialup and sometimes you would redial and it would get worse
i would not bother about 1.4k 3% nots going to make to much difference unless you are down loading 100s of megs
and I would not expect the accuracy to be that great anyway

I heard there was an accelerator or way of maximizing dialup..logs in at 45kps..can't get a radio download..still in trial status. This is earthlink. Would have dropped them or improved what they offer by now, but I can't get their tech support in the four hours I allot to resolve this stuff. I know, i know, I was warned..but now I think I'm stuck. Thanx team!

A:Speed up for Dial-up?

There are two options I would recommend:

1) Use something like Naviscope to increase browser speed, and Star Downloader to increase download speed (they do not actually increase speed per se; but certainly optimize your surfing to a significant difference).

2) Sign up to a commercial web based acceleration service. This one costs, but apparently it works quite well. One of the more common services is Propel. They basically compress data through your line so it is faster to download.

Have dial up through earthlink that is only about 27Kb/s speed. They gave me other phone numbers but got the same results. Then said it could be wiring in my house. It was built in 1986. Modem is 56k. Is there a way to check this for the layman and could it be in the wiring from the box away from house rather than in the house itself?

I have an old Toshiba 2590CDT laptop with 64MB of RAM, Pentium II processor and am running Win98 4.10.1998. It has a Toshiba Internal V.90 modem. This laptop was just given to me and I am trying to get it working better.

When I go online, the fastest speed I get is 26400 bps. My desktop computer gets 44K bps connection speeds on the same phone line.

I also would like to go to the library and use the high-speed wireless there. The computer came with a slide-in Lucent Technologies PC24E-00 pc card labled WaveLAN. Is this the type card that can receive the wireless signal? If yes, how do I get it to work?

Please help!

Ive been using the same IP for over five years and have no problems until last two weeks. (If I could afford Highspeed I would have switched along time ago). When I connect to the internet I'm doing good if I stay connect for more then an hour. I will start out with a 28.8 kbps until I have to reconnect. Then it will drop to 12.0 kbps and if I try to reconnect to try and up the speed it will then go to about 7.2 kbps. At this speed nothing works. I then shut off my pc, as to prevent putting my foot through it. About an hour later I will start up and the samething happens. Thinking that it's a modem problem I talk to Dell and they said that as long as I can connect to the internet the mpdem is working fine. They told me to contact my IP. After talking to my IP, we deleted my connection and then reinstalled the connection and still I get the same problem. They said that I should talk to my phone company for the problem is with my landline. I called my phone carrirer and they had know repairs being made in my area and as long as my get a dial tone there is nothing wrong with the system. So, who do I believe? And can I solve this problem?

A:Dial-up never the speed

I had that same problem back when I used dialup. The modem would work okay for a while and then just start creeping until it was useless. I thought it was everything but the modem. Guess what... it was the modem. I put a new 56k in it and realized I had forgotten just how fast it used to be. Just because it connects doesn't mean something on the modem card isn't overheating or changing value. I recommend trying a new one. It worked for me.

But before you rush out to the store, pick up the phone and push a button to kill the dial tone and listen. Is it quiet with no buzz or crackling? Sometimes a cordless phone charger/pwr supply can induce a buzz that will trash your data stream. So can an old flourescent light fixture. If you hear any kind of noise, unplug all the other phones in the house (and their power supplies if they have them) and try again with an old cord phone. Then you can go outside to the box, open it and unplug the line to the house, then plug a phone into the test jack. Push a button to kill the dial tone. Is it quiet there? If it is, then the feed from their end is good. If it sounds clear, it's usually good enough for data... unless you're deaf.
Water in your phone box outside will corrode the wires and cause static and crackling. That's worth a check.

Now I'm running broadband, but I did have to eliminate some other monthly bills to squeeze it in, so I know where you're coming from.

Let us know how it works ... Read more

Also, I had the speed tested and it came out 27.7. I have dail-up with a 56 modem. Is that about the speed I should expect?

Thanks, grandpaw7

A:Computer Speed Slow

Open Task Manager and check the cpu usage. If it's high, check to see which process is using the cpu. You may also want to check Event Viewer and see if Windows is reporting any hardware issues. If all of that looks normal, then we will need to know exactly what is "slow".

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2GB ram Acer Aspire One AO722 computer that has been slowing down substantially. I have a huge amount of hard drive space but it seems if I store more on it it gets slower. My question to you is what is the best software out there to speed up a computer?

The Software I Currently Have (To Not Mention):
Tweaking.com Tweaker
CCleaner
ATF Cleaner

A:Best way to speed up a slow computer

Start by checking this out:

Optimize Windows 7
How many processes are running at any given time? Use the link above in addition to deciding how many processes you need running as too many will slow your rig down. I have an old laptop with only 1 GB RAM, Intel Duo Core and 55GB HDD. I usually only have 48 processes running at rest, and when I'm online, with multiple programs opened, I only use about 5% of my CPU

Tweaking things is a tricky route to take. Some can help, but many can harm. Windows 7 is pretty well tweaked out of the box so I wouldn't do to many. Try scanning for malware with; Malwarebytes or Superantispyware to see what may be holding your system up.

That's a good place to start, the members here can help further, but until you do a few of these common steps there's no need to get too in depth, as you'd be surprised how much these things can help.

Pardon me, but can you please translate into a form of standard English? I am sorry, but I can only understand the barest gist of what you have written:

Your dial-up speed has decreased

You have been doing some kind of trouble-shooting

You need assistance

It would also help if you provided some additional details:

What is your operating system?
What you may have been doing when the slow down occurs?
Is the slow down consistent or erratic?

Recently had the phoneline fixed after lots of probs connecting,,bad speeds, dropping connections etc.
Prior to the repair the best the modem ever reported was 46667(and frequently less! always varying)
Now its really stable and connects at 48000 every time, which leads me to think that theres some sort of internal "throttling" going on, I read somewhere about 56k modems not being allowed to connect at higher than ??? speed,is there anything other than the "connect at" dropbox in modem properties to tweak? Tried that at 57600 and 115 xxx but makes no odds.
This applies to 2 pcs which share a line(usually networked together but both are wired to line incase others shutdown etc etc)
Maybe a question for software section, thought I'd try here first tho!

Hey all. I recently found a Firefox addon that I think I might really enjoy. It's called FoxTab, and I have a question about it. FoxTab has a feature called 'Speed Dial'. I know there are a few other addons that are alternatives to the one built into FoxTab, but neither of the two I have tried look nearly as good. I've looked around on the Internet for about half an hour now, as well as trying some ideas of my own on the subject of trying to get Speed Dial as my homepage.

Some people have recommended downgrading to an older version of FoxTab and merely using Speed Dial, but I really want to use FoxTab's version, because it looks awesome. The FoxTab page appears to not have a URL of its own, and when I choose to use my current page as my homepage from the options, it will give me "about:blank". Unfortunately, this won't make it work. I've tried other options in a hope to make it work for me, and it just seems like it won't work for me. So I'm hoping one of you, or more, if possible, have ideas how to make it work, and hopefully something will turn out to be successful. Below is the information I'm assuming will be useful:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate (32 Bit)
FF Version: Firefox 3.6.3
FoxTab Version: FoxTab 1.3 (latest release)

Much thanks for any help!

Chrome Speed-dial has an option in Edit menu to use Dial Image URL. But what I'd like to do is use images from my HD. At the moment all I can figure to use my own custom made image is to upload it to my web site and paste the URL.

Seems like there should be a way to get it to load off the HD. Anyone know a trick without running a local web server?

A:use Image from HD as a Speed-dial?

I found I didn't need it after switching to Speed-dial 2. The default images are larger and they don't shrink because you resize the browser window. The title is inside the thumbnail area so the space between dials isn't used up by the Title. Other than that it's quite familiar.
