Flicking on screen and noise in my laptop

Q: Flicking on screen and noise in my laptop

I have a 4 year old Compac CQ61-410US Notebook. The flicking problem happens in Chrome and Internet Explorer and if I play the games that came with the computer. When I hit enter, space bar and other things it will stop for a while but then it is back. Interesting note it has not done it once since I have been on this site!
The noise is new  and it make me very nervous. No sound should be coming from this thing insides.  Well maybe a little but I do not want to hear it running this loud. Is my hard drive about to die?
On a personal note I am as old as dirt and every thing I buy I have to think will I live to use it. Should I just go and have everything downloaded to a new computer or is this pain something I can take of? I have had some other problems and have been able to fix it with help from this fabulous site
Thank You

Preferred Solution: Flicking on screen and noise in my laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First of all, welcome to BC. See, it's a great site, your problem has gone away already !

On a more serious note, what sort of noise is it ?  Sort of a fan whirring noise, or is there an element of click to it ?  There are three things I would do as a precaution / check.

First off, back up my data - work, photos, music, that sort of stuff. Depending on how much you have, you can use anything from a USB stick to an external USB hard drive. But back it up, just in case you do have a hard drive problem.

Secondly, run chkdsk /r on you hard drive. You do this by opening the Command prompt which you will find at 'Start / Programs / Accessories'. RIGHT click on 'Command prompt' and select 'Run as administrator' in the drop-down box that appears. This will produce a black window with white text. Just type 'chkdsk /r' (Note - there is a space between 'chkdsk' and '/r') and press enter. You will then get a message saying it cannot run, do you wish to run at next boot Y / N. Type 'Y' (= Yes) and press enter, then reboot your computer. Chkdsk will run when it starts up.

Dependiing on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your processor, this may well take upwards of an hour, don't turn your computer off until it has finished. It will then tell you if there are any faulty sectors on your hard drive.

Thirdly I would download, install and run a little program called 'Speccy', you can get it here :

Speccy
The noise may be nothing to do with your hard drive. You say your computer is four years old, you will be surprised how much dust and dirt can accumulate in that time and this will make the fan work much harder to keep temperatures down. Speccy will tell you far more than you want to know about the hardware on your computer - but it will tell you some important temperatures. On a laptop, the CPU should not exceed about 50 - 60C, the motherboard should be around 30 - 40C, as should the hard drive. These temperatures are after it has been in use for about an hour or so.

If anything seems out of line, or you just want somebody to have a look at it, it is very easy to generate a report from Speccy. The method is that the report itself is stored on their server and you get a link which you can paste into a post here. There is no personal data included in the report. And if chkdsk shows up any errors on the hard drive, post back as well for more advice.

i got a new laptop a month or so ago, but since using it the screen is doing my head in. it keeps flicking from filling the whole screen to having a black bar about 1 or 2 inches wide on either side and everything on the screen then fills only that area, not even the cursor can go in the black sides.

my tabs on google crome also get smaller, for example, the twitter tab when the screen is big will say twitter/home with a little gap after and when it is small only twitter/ho will fit. it happens constantly no matter if i'm touching the laptop or not. the screen will go back then swap size. however, if i'm typing it will carry on during the balck screen that's on for like half a second, but the cursor will go back to being in the middle. sometimes it can be like 15 mins between size changes, but sometimes it like happens about 10 times within 30 seconds.

i checked the screen resolution but when i change that the font just gets bigger, and thats not the problem.i get a message each time it changes saying...

"optimal resolution notification. this is not the optimal screen resolution for the clone dispaly configuration. the optimal resolution is 800 x 600. click this notification for more information" but when i change it to this only the font size changes.

on facebook the bar saying who is online to chat goes when its on the small screen because theres no room. its so frustrating. its a new laptop for uni and its impossible to focus on work when the s... Read more

Hello Dinesh and welcome to the forums

Remove any 3rd party codecs you have installed, then install Shark007's codec pack:

Shark007.net - Windows Vista Codec Package

This should clear up any issues you're having

Hi,This is kuiyoung. I had service few month. I forgot when it was. That time your technician came to office and changed motherboard. But when Im using it, suddenly it starts flicking and get error message that pc went to wrong. It's been two weeks. Strongly I think this one has problem and I don't wanna repair anymore. Because as you can see, I requested several times to repair this notebook. I'm really sick of it. I really don't think this one has virus. Thus I don't wanna install any program to wasting my time. I hope that you understand my situation. Thus I wanna refund or change new one. If you refund I would be more happier than change new one happy. Because after changing new one, same problem, I won't call you guys again. I will definitely buy other brand. It was my first time to buy Dell laptop. Really disappointed. I hope other people won't make same problem like me. I used to use other brand and never had problem.

Per Dell policy;* A refund is only possible if requested inside the FIRST 30 days from the original invoice date.* Any system exchange after the first 30 day will be a refurbished, not new.At this point, all we can do on this Forum is troubleshoot the flicker issue. If we diagnose that hardware is at fault, you would then contact Technical Support to arrange either parts replacement or refurbished system exchange.* Reinstall our Intel HD graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished* Reinstall our Nvidia GTX 960M graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished and retest

Hey Sevenforums,

I just grabbed myself an awesome deal on a desktop for about 65 bucks. I booted up the computer and noticed that on boot, the screen starts to flicker and does some weird flashes. all my laptops never experience this but for computers, I don't know whether its normal or not. Not even my older desktop does this..

I uploaded a video using tinypic so please take your time to examine my computer's boot up (1:30) long.

ignore the "windows 7 is not genuine" because the person who sold it to me used a bootleg copy. I'm going to run LINUX and my own windows 7 ultimate OS.

I'm plugged into a DVI-D male to a DVI-I female (Desktop) to a HDMI (HDTV)

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 that is out of warranty. I bought it in 2013.  With that out o' the way, my Lenovo Yoga 13's screen stays black even when the power is on...I see no Lenovo logo or anything AND the laptop keeps restarting on its own, so it is stuck in restart mode, with the screen staying black the whole time.  This laptop has been doing this (black screen even though power is on and shuts off and restarts on its own) for about 6 months now....(Jan 2017-June 3, 2017 as of this writing). This laptop works WHEN IT WANTS TO EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE, BUT NOT OFTEN.  I turned the laptop on now, and I'm typing on it now, **BUT when it doesn't work, which is most of the time**, it shows a black screen (I see nothing on the screen) even with the power on and constantly restarts on its own. Is this hardware issue a motherboard problem or a screen issue specifically? Specifically, is it the motherboard that needs to be fixed on this Yoga 13 or is it a screen issue? If it's a motherboard issue that needs to be fixed, how much would it cost? Or If it's a screen issue, how much would that cost to fix? Any help on this is much needed!

Hi guys,  I hope someone can help...my daughters HP laptop-Pavillion two in one with touch screen is spazzing out!  It has anti virus installed and this is not picking up any viruses.  When she uses it, whether in Minecraft, Sims or Netflix etc, it begins flicking violently.  It will randomly open and close files but mostly it brings up the calendar in the bottom right corner and flicks it open and closed while scrolling through the months and days violently and on it's own. down the righthand side of the screen, round blurs flick up and down.  The cursor moves all over the screen and we have no control.  It does eventually stop...for a bit...then off it goes again.  I videoed it and tried to upload but its too large. This laptop has not been dropped and is only six months or so old.  My other daughter has the same device with the same anti virus and has no issues with it.Please help.

Hi,

I hope I'm posting in the rite place.

So here's the situation,
Laptop : Macbook White (2.4Ghz Dual Core)
TV : SONY Bravia 42"

I prefer working on a bigger screen, hence my laptop is constantly connected to the TV Screen. I use mini-DVI to VGA adaptor for Video and M-RCA to M-RCA through the headphone jack on my laptop for audio.

When the laptop is connected to the charger, it causes a buzzing noise and disturbances (horizontal distorted lines) on the TV Screen. Disconnecting the charger completely stops all of these problems.

So far so good but this is very inconvenient as I can only work on battery power.

Is there a permanent solution so that I can keep my charger connected without getting these screen artifacts and buzzin noise from my TV?

Some ppl have suggested an inverter but I wanted some reliable advise before I start buying anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a Nvidia 8800GTS that is about 2 years old.
Lately I have been having problems with the monitor turning Off and then back On some times once in a while and sometime continuously.really no pattern to when it flicks on and off.
The Drivers are up to date for the V card.
I checked all the connections and everythings seems OK but still problem exist.
Settings are at 1280 x 1024 75 HTz 32 bit color.
I will open the cover and jiggle the V card but not sure if this would do anything.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?
thanks

If the problem only started recently and the monitor is 9 years old, it's likely it's dying. The only to know for sure is to swap in another monitor and see if it does the same thing.

Hi my laptop last night I made it sleep, but it turn itself on after it sleeps(normal, I have fastboot off, its not related to fastboot but it just does it.) but it stayed on the whole night and this morning I wake up and I hear this clicking noise like when you put it to sleep mode the harddrive headpark clicking noise. I open it and it turns on, but it still clicks even when its on so I waited a few minutes still the same. I Restarted it then now a few hours later it starts making the noise again and it is on I don't know why.  Is it a sign of harddrive failure or is it normal? I bought it a year ago on Dec. 26, 2015(and if your wondering if it clicks when the harddrive light blinks no, it clicks randomly not the same time as the light) Thanks please reply if you have a suggestion or fix.

I'm at my mum's house and I've decided to try out MapleStory on her old laggy computer. She recently updated her internet, but it still runs terribly slow.
When I download MapleStory (client on the nexon website), everything downloads perfectly fine and within 2 hours, it'll be finished. Installing it takes time, but it ends up installing everything perfectly fine (including the finishing bits when you run the game).
It runs fine and I can log in and select a server and channel, but the moment it goes to the 'character selection' screen, the whole game starts flicking around and it makes it impossible to click 'back'.
If I select a server with no characters, the images stay fine, but if I go to create a character, the images begin to flick again. (Oblviously has something to do with the characters...but what)?
MapleStory doesn't close or anything, but I can't exit it. I can, but only by the task manager. Just want to know what's going on and if anyone knows how, how to fix the problem.
Help please... D:
(I'm kinda dumb with computers, so anything you need to know about this one, ask me and I'll put it up...don't wanna put everything up and make myself look even stupider).

My monitor is just spazzing out, and I have no idea why. In fact I know it's not the monitor that's the problem because I switched my tower with my brother's tower to see what would happen (using the same monitor), and it works perfectly fine.

Just so you guys have some background...

My computer decided to crash at one point whilst I was playing music and using MSN messenger, not even letting me bring up task manager using ctrl+alt+delete. I had to manually restart the computer, but when the startup screen came up it had a really strange graphics issue where there were sketchy lines running through the screen, and when the DOS-looking screen came up (i.e. when checking if there's anything in the CD drive) all the characters were jumbled and scattered. What's worse, Windows didn't even start up...the screen just stayed blank after the Windows load screen. I attempted Safe Mode and the same thing occurred, so I'm guessing it is a hardware issue?

Just to be sure I tried putting my computer through system recovery with the disk that was provided with the computer, and surprisingly it did take me to Windows...the part where it starts checking for hardware drivers and goes through all the stuff that it does when you recover the system...however when it said it had to test the keyboard and mouse, and the screen may flicker for a few seconds my monitor started off with its very own issue. I waited at least 10 minutes, and it didn't stop.

Hello

I just purchased 2 new hard drives and a new copy of Windows 10 for my desk top set up. I removed my old hard drives and put the new ones in with the intention of installing the operating system. However, when I start up my new system my monitor only displays picture for a couple of minutes before it goes blank and flicks between HDMI and Analog not displaying any picture.

What I have tried:

Using a different brand monitor with a different socket into my graphics card.

Using a different graphics card.

Using different ports for my graphics card in the board.

Removing and cleaning graphics card and RAM.

I even got desperate and changed my system back to what I used a few days ago and my monitor still plays up.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get my picture back?

Dear all,

I just recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and my relevant drivers for Dell.
All was working fine until these problems occured.

1) At the taskbar, if there are more than one tab (for instance Windows folder) we can usually click it and select the tab we wish to go to. But for my case, the "Tab Screen" simply disappears after I click it once, so I can't choose the folder I wish to go.

2) For any browsers (windows browser, chrome, internet explorer, more) whenever I press the back button it simply reverts back to the page I was at (sort of like someone pressed forward the moment I press back).

Hope to receive help.
If any specifications are needed it'd be much appreciated if you can tell me how to give you guys the logs.

Cheers,

Hello all

Any advice please or where to go for assistance.

This is A Dell XPS 8930 - with windows 10 (i am pretty sure it is windows 10 anyhow!!)

Just had a frustrating few hours - earlier today I loaded my Epson scan software (V500 photo scanner) and did some scans. Saving as 48 bit tiffs to the desktop.
Few hrs later all scans done and saved into the folder - i come to open one up (double click) and it does nothing and then the folder shuts - try again and the same thing.
I then tried opening one of the files from Photoshop and it pointed to the file then photoshop crashed (closed)!!?
Anyhow left it a while - did something else. Came back and tried opening a tiff form the folder and it just continually flashed the folder on the screen then off , on off.... whilst it is doing this I cant do anything else.
Shut the machine down via task manager, rebooted and it booted up only for the desktop to be doing this constant flash on and off routine...
Repeated this a few times.... same problem
Tried it in safe mode - same thing
Did a system restore - hoping it was somersetting form the Epson scanner install...... still the same

Now it wont even boot onto the start up screens..... ?????

Any advice, help or assistance would be greatly received!!!!

Thanks
Gav

I have a lenovo laptop ,bought last year ,windows 10.
It accidentally fell down from my table on a solid marble floor and the back of screen [the metal(or plastic) part(not the screen)]has a crack in it and back of the screen has broken from corners. It is working absolutely fine .
Problem 1(Minor):
since the moisture etc will be able to reach inside of the screen area ,can it damage some sensitive display mechanism on my screen in the future.

Problem 2(Major)
Laptop is working fine but I can hear noise (like a screw or another broken piece )in the keyboard area .This noise only comes when i tilt my computer in different angles (like solving a ball in a puzzle),and I have a lot of data (quite sensitive) around 500 Gb in my laptop .So can this noise mean that my laptop is broken and hence i can lose all my data. Please tell me what this noise can be and if the condition is bad then how to backup that amount of data(because if my laptop breaks or if I have to take it to a repair shop and would have all the data already backed up)
I can also buy an external drive if nothing else can be done.

Also keep in mind that I know nothing about the hardware of a computer(just knew some basic terms which i have alredy used)

Hi,

I hope somebody can give me an opinion from his experience. This laptop is 4 months old, Asus X501A. I had to return another one to Amazon because it made some bad clicking noises and the hard disk was faulty as Hard Disk Sentinel said it was with 68% health new. So, this laptop model might have a bad hard disk (Seagate).

Anyway, I recorded the noise with my phone and here is the link. The three files are about the same. 30 seconds with this little buzz, then some click, and then silence, only to start again a little later. The clicks have always been there, I heard it was no problem, the heads parking or something not bad. But this buzz... It is low, not as loud as the recordings may show, but still it surely is a sign of a serious problem.

By the way, I installed W8.1 from scratch, a clean install, and it did't go away. It was on W8 and it is on W8.1.

Here goes the link: Redirecting... (small 30 secs 3gp files)

Thanks for your opinions in advance.

Cheers.

I have two questions: #1, I have a compaq N1000c. When I bootup there is a whinning sound that I believe may be coming from the fan. Is there a way to lubricate the fan? Or, do I have to replace the fan and is the cost worth the investment?

#2, my battery is dead. Where and what should I expect to spend for a new battery and is it a DIY job. Thanks Chuck.

A:Laptop noise

You need to replace the fan, there is no way to "lubricate" them when they start making noise. I've attempted it many times, and it only lasts a month or two, and the problem is back. You'll likely have to find the exact replacment fan for the laptop, since many of them are pretty unique.

If the battery in question is the main battery, it'll cost you $75-100 for a replacement. As to the question of if it's worth it, that's for you to decide.

I bought an x360 last month, and today the fan has started making a range of very loud buzzing noises as if it's catching against something inside the enclosure I'm not sure if this is how you get HP tech support to contact you regarding something that is in warranty but I was sent to this forum page by the automated system when I input my details, which also involved joining the forum. As you can imagine, getting very irate. Please advise

Dears, laptop user here always complain about fan noise, but in fact  2 points really need to be distiguished: It is Windows OS to be blamed, not LENOVOThe fan noisy issue can be found almost everywhere at HP, DELL's user forum. Also here at Lenovo forum, the solution mainly focus on software settings, esp. power management or task management within OS. To be honest, I have also macOS installed on my Lenovo, I can hardly hear any spining due to excessive heat. Yes, the problem is at OS/Windows not the hardware builder. On the other side, everyone may have noticed that Windows OS updates itself without your permission, even if you've set admin group policy to deny update, Windows will download and install the update itself w/o you! YES, Windows/OS is the boss of your PC and permanently, not you! Just now, I switched back to Wx and noticed the icons of MS office have been changed of all 4!The so-called noise, hardware of software? The fan noise, which most people complaining here, is the fast fan spining, loud wind blowing of heat ventilation due to excessive usage of CPU/GPU inducing higher temperature(or maybe even not physically, but just comes from system reporting). This is in fact technically correct! For such problem, what needed,  is a system/software solution to be able to better adjust/control the power/task/process. The REAL noisy issue on the other side,  would be due to, e.g. mechanical misalighment or unbalanced fan blades, or fixti... It's not real loud, and doesn't seem related to the fans. It's not the CD/DVD drive, because it continues when I open that drive door. When I put a mechanic's stethoscope on top of the case where the hard drive is, I pick up the fan sound - consistent RPM - but not the rising and falling of chain saw like noise.

Computer is running normally.

Should I worry?

A:Chain saw like noise from laptop!

I have a similar sound in my old laptop - in my case I have always believed to it be the fan, it appears as if some part of the bearing has been damaged.
So when the laptop starts up it makes a horrible sound from a fan towards the top of the keyboard, and when the fan slows down it virtually disappears. The sound is almost a cross between a crunching sound and a reving sound, very difficult to describe.

Not sure if thats helpful in anyway or if it descibes your issues?

If it is that It's not detremental but just irritating!

Hey all! So my laptop started making vibrating noise. i can feel the vibration in my hands while typing you these words . so here they are all the information i can tell: -the vibrating noise started 2 months ago and still going. -the noise is always accompanied by vibration felt near the power button, left to the touch pad and in the keyboard -the vibration is felt more on the left side than the right. -the noise onset is intermittent, i mean either it start when i turn my lap on or after a while but when it starts , it usually goes on forever until i turn the lap off for like 6 hours. -the vibrating noise reaches its peak when the laptop is Shutting Down -sometimes it happens when my fan is at high speed (2,700:3,000 rpm according to speedfan software program) and other times the fan is just 1,700 rpm and the noise still going. -sometimes it`s accompanies by high CPU Usage (65%) and other times it`s going on while the CPU Usage is less than 10% as it`s now while typing this. -the voice and vibration goes off when i tap near the power button (slightly to the right of it) with a little bit of force. then after like 10 seconds, the voice show again -upon inspection, i opened the laptop and found nothing wrong , i cleaned the fan so well, didn`t make anything to the fan parts, i searched for any friction prints on the fan case or near it but i found none, and lastly i secured the fan with the 4 screws very well and in the mother...
