Computer randomly goes to sleep, Event Viewer says lid closed

Q: Computer randomly goes to sleep, Event Viewer says lid closed

Basically, this started happening after I had to shut my computer down via the power button after Windows went unresponsive for 11 hours. After turning it back on the next day, it worked fine, but a couple hours later it started going to sleep while I was using it. I checked all of the power settings, including advanced, and all of them are set to "Never" and "Nothing", including what to do when the power button is pressed or the lid is closed. It still does this.

I checked the event viewer and found a Information level entry for Kernel-Power at the times it went to sleep. The general information for this was as follows (with everything moved to one column, because it formatted weirdly here):

The system is entering sleep.

Sleep Reason: Button or Lid

Log Name: System
Logged: 12/28/2016 11:34:05 AM
Source: Kernel-Power
Task Category: (64)
Event ID: 42
Keywords: (4)
Level: Information
Computer: BlakesLaptop-PC
User: N/A
OpCode: Info

This is from the first one, the others are pretty much the same.

There were no events listed at any level above Information at or around those times. All other entries around those times are to be expected when the computer goes to sleep and wakes back up.

This also seems to happen at about the same part of the day, from 10:30am to 12:00pm.

Another thing that I just found while typing this is a blank event from 12/31/16. This correlates to another entry in Kernel-Power which says that the system rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. I am unsure as to why such an empty event would occur or why my computer would have lost power on the 31st, as this problem started on the 28th after I had to shut it down on the 27th. The event has nothing at all (not even N/A) on it anywhere, and the "details" page is also entirely blank.

I really would like to fix this, as it goes to sleep regardless of what I am doing (including while I am actively typing a sentence), and it also disconnects from wifi and all external hardware that is plugged in whenever it does this.

Preferred Solution: Computer randomly goes to sleep, Event Viewer says lid closed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For the past few weeks my computer has been randomly restarting. It is more common when I'm playing a game. I originally thought that my processor was hitting the shut down temp I set in bios, but I started recording the temp and the time after that it shut down, that temp was never reached. The only thing that gets recorded in the event viewer is that an improper shut down has occurred. This made me think memory but I tested it and it passed with 0 errors. I've also checked the SMART of my HDD with no errors or warnings. So I'm thinking now that it may be an issue with my mobo or my power supply. What else can I try, or how else can I more accurately diagnose the problem? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

A:Computer randomly restarting, no useful information in event viewer

Use HWMonitor to check your min and max voltages while gaming for a few minutes and make sure that thwy aren't out of the norm.

Also, check your mobo for swelling, leaking, or hissing caps.

Clean system, thoroughly, with canned air.

My Yoga 920 seems to ranomly wake from sleep when the lid is closed. I'd had several occasions when travelling to find my latop completely dead when I needed it - or finding it burning up in the confines of my bag. A few times, I've been alerted to problem when I happen to hear my laptop make a notification sound. When this happens, the screen is already on when I open the lid and much of the bettery has been used. I've seen this occur both in and out of my bag. Nothing is plug into the laptop other then the dummy USB holder for the pen. I have Vantage installed and all updates have been applied.

I know nothing about this stuff so I've been learning as I try to troubleshoot this issue. This is my build in case it matters:

CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 (645)
Mainboard: MSI 870-G45
RAM: 4x2 GB DDR3
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6900
HDD: Seagate 2 TB
PSU: Corsair GS 700W

My first graphics card was the GeForce 240 and I've seen others report similar problems to mine (computer freezes up, loops sound, requires hard boot) but I have since upgraded to the GPU in my build above. When I go to event log it USED TO say:

"The driver \Driver\ATITool failed to load for the device Root\*ATITOOLDEVICE\0000."

And this was time stamped at the moment of the crash. Then I went into device manager and uninstalled the ATITool driver, which stopped this error message but didn't stop the freezing.

I only assume that this is driver-related because I have done every kind of hardware check and test and others in the forums with similar problems have been told this might be their drivers. It does seem software related but again I know nothing about any of this. Anyone out there know what's going on? I can provide any other necessary information.

Thanks for reading!

I think maybe that may have something to do with it. I deleted the 6 registry keys associated with this key and everything worked but I was locked out of Windows XP Mode (Windows Virtual PC). I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to fix this error?

Hello all,

I've tried to troubleshoot this issue in which my laptop will enter sleep mode at random times. Strangely, it only happens when my computer is plugged in to the adapter. Looking in the Windows event logs showed that entering sleep mode was either caused by Event 37 (system is limited by firmware) or Event 42 (entering sleep because of the sleep button or lid). I have since installed every software update provided by Dell's website for my laptop model (Inspiron 7720), including the latest BIOS update, but the issue persists. After receiving the Event 42 warning in the log, I deactivated the power button in the power options for the current power plan, which only caused the system to freeze up entirely when it entered sleep mode again. The power light was still on, but the screen turned off and neither the touchpad nor the mouse nor the keyboard would wake the computer up. I've also tried using a different adapter with this laptop - a 90W adapter instead of the 130W one that came with the laptop - but this only prolonged the time it took for the computer to enter sleep mode again. I even deactivated sleep mode in the power options to ensure that this wasn't the cause. It will enter sleep mode regardless of whatever I'm doing, too - even while I was typing this post, the screen turned black and the power button began pulsing. The only way I can turn the laptop back on again is by closing the lid and opening it again, since for some reason pressing the power button wo... Read more

Hi Fiero, Welcome to Forums.

Reason for the issue can be anything. Like a software which came pre installed on your laptop. Dell and other brands install their own power management tools.

You can goto advanced power management settings, look indeed for hibernate or sleep, change the 180 minutes into 0 for meaning NEVER.

If you find some software in your Control panel (add/remove programs) by Dell for power management. Try to uninstall it (Don't worry you can get it back from Dell site) and check.

Check for Keyboard/touchpad/mouse/DVD RW for "Allow this device to wake up the computer" at the "Power management" tab of respective hardware.

Keep us posted.

I tryed charging it but it only charges when it is in sleep mode or either closed . When I plug it in while its in it has a white light and the battery days plugged in ; not charging . But when I close it there is a orange light and a couple hours later it's fully charged . I assumed I had a bad battery but I ran a battery test and it said my battery was fine . Because it charges when it's closed I assumed their was a setting I could just switch but i don't know what to do .

Hello,

My computer has started restarting itself several times a day... I looked in the event log and see a bunch of these errors (listed below)

Can anyone tell me how to look in the memory.dmp file? I cannot seem to get it to upload on this site, it keeps erroring out. (Perhaps a work firewall) ... I can attach it later if that would help ... can anyone help me figure out what is causing this? This computer was previously working fine. I *think* this loosely correlates with when I updated to Microsoft Office 2010, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Can anyone analyze it to see what may be the cause?

Seems like everytime I am watching a YouTube video, the computer would freeze to where I can't move my mouse or anything.

Only way I can get back on track again is doing a hard reset. My computer has NO lag issues, restarts in 10.5 seconds flat each time and boots back up fully in about 20 seconds or less.

Using Win 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
Samsung 480GB Enterprise SSD

My Full system spec can be found on my profile.

Anyone know what could be causing the FREEZE when watching Flash Content? There is no error messages in the event viewer after my computer boots back up.

I downloaded and installed the Hotfix from MS that supposed to fix the freezing up due to the SP1 update, but still didn't help.

Thanks...

I'm not too familiar with Nvidia cards, but I can say that my FX990 board has had issues with my Vcard. My own fixes might not apply to yours, but I bet it has something to do with the change in Power_States, where the PCIE voltages and the Vcard voltage needs are causing the card to freeze up. I just posted a reply which may be helpful:

My computer has recently (in the past 1-2 weeks) started crashing at least 1-2 times a day.  The crash results in a blue screen where at the bottom it does a physical memory dump of some sort -- the screen is only up for a few seconds.  This mostly occurs when playing some sort of video game (WoW, Wildstar, or Smite).  I checked the event viewer and I'm receiving constant (multiple times a second) warnings of a WHEA-Logger source for my PCI Express Root Port Vendor ID:Device ID: 0x8086:0x3405.  The device ID per the device manager seems to link with (Intel® 5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub to ESI Port - 3405.

I'm not sure if this is the cause of my crashes, however.  I checked around online and some people seem to have solved it by updating their Intel chipset drivers however when I run the Intel utility it says my driver is current and valid.

My windows troubleshooting tool has indicated that I've received recent video hardware failures.

I've attached my DXDiag dump.  I'm running Windows 7 with an i7 920, 8Gig RAM, AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics card.

Please let me know what additional information you need from me -- Thanks in advance for the help!

Your message identifies a video hardware failure
If you have another way to generate video for the system [motherboard chip set, another graphics card] to see if that solves the problem it would confirm a bad card.

Hi guys, i was able to solve my BSOD issue regarding a couple of games on steam, however the lockup my computer sometimes receives has not yet been solved. it seems to be only happening with 1 game at the moment which is Company of Heroes 2. When i check the event viewer it comes up with this error but i have no idea on how to fix it. Its included in this post as a screenshot

A:Computer locks up during certain games, event viewer included

Check and monitor your temps as well as the voltage coming from the psu. It is possible either your system is not getting enough ventilation; and or the psu is possibly on its way out. If you keep monitoring the voltages and they are slowly dropping little by little then yes your psu is probably slowly on its way out. Also; as for the temps; if your cpu fan and or any other fan is not getting the proper voltage to it; that also may cause freeze ups due to a possible heat issue. These 2 bits of info come from the info i just looked up via google. Especially if you are "taxing" the heck outta the cpu during game play. Doing that can cause a overheat issue if the fan(s) are not spinning high enough to vent the system heat as well as if the voltage is not proper going to the cpu fan and or any other fans.

What I can not do is use Computer Management or Event Viewer to examine another system.  It used to work, and if I RDP into another computer I can still use Event Viewer or Computer Management to manage another system.

It does not matter if I use the computer name or the IP address.
I have also found whenthe above error shows up, the following error is logged in Event Viewer:

DCOM got error "2147944122" from the computer [IPAddress or ComputerName] when attempting to activate the server:

I have tried disabling the Windows firewall on the system where I'm having the issue. I don't think the issue is on the target computers, because it works just fine if I RDP to a different computer and then use Event Viewer or Computer Management to connect

Howdy everyone. I've got a problem with my computer hard freezing (locking up, no input, have to perform a hard reboot) since July 15th. It seems impossible for me to diagnose this problem since I've never dealt with a recurring hard freeze before. My initial reaction was that the hardware was problematic, but at the same time I have no idea if it could be caused by a driver.

Attempted solutions so far:
Ran CHKDSK on both HDDs, no errors found (this is on a four-week old HDD with a fresh Windows 7 x64 install)
Ran Memtest+ for 7 hours, no errors found
Replaced the graphics card with a weaker one, problem still occurred
Constantly checking temps for overheating, card and processor rarely get above 40, but the computer still freezes during idle or low processing stages

Software-related
Uninstalled, and swept video card drivers, then reinstalled twice
Ran Driver Verifier (as of now), and no blue screens
Started checking for any errors in Event Viewer (none are related to the crash so far, as I've fixed about 5 random things getting reported)
Checked for dump files, to no avail
Reinstalled all motherboard drivers from the manufacturer

At this point, I'm at the end of my ideas, so I came to you guys. I have no idea what information I could provide to you that may be of assistance. While the computer is frozen, it is still powered on as well - I have to turn it off manually, if that is revealing of anything. I'm basically willing to try anything. My computer keeps restarting at ramdom time during the day. If I play a movie using vlc that restarts it every time. I tried running Linux to see if it was a windows problem and still happend. Tried running memtest and it goes into a infinite restart loop after 15 sec in memtest. I swapped out ram and still the same problem. I'm thinking it's most either video card or motherboard. Another random problem I get is sometime when I turn the computer on I get no display and have to keep resetting it. I unhooked everything and cleaned out dust and re applied heat sink. I have no more idea what to try. Here is a error report from event viewer

So I decided to restart my computer because it was running a bit slow. After the start up, I saw the "No audio service is running" notification and that my computer was not able to recognize any network connection at all (it's connected through ethernet and wifi). My speakers are working and so is the modem/router/ethernet cable because I tested them on my other computer. I figured I could try factory resetting but when I try, it says that it is not able to do so. I've tried viewing event viewer, but the service was not available! Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. here are the full specs to my computer if needed: http://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c04318929[1]

OS: windows 8.1
motherboard: Orchid S
processor : amd a10-6700
graphics card: nvidia geforce gt 635
ram: 8gb
Audio codec: IDT 92HD68E

EDIT 1: I've entered HD PC HARDWARE and the audio and wireless components have passed.

EDIT 2: ...I went back to a system restore point and now life is good

A:Not able to access event viewer, factory restart computer, or even connect to a network

Can you please clarify what you can do..... for example...

* Can you login ?
* If "No" what exactly is happening ?
* If "Yes" do you login with an Account with Administrator privileges ?
* If "Yes" what can you do / what can't you do at that point ?

Hello,
Recently my computer has been shutting down without warning. I could be doing anything from playing far cry 4 to browsing the web. I looked into the event viewer and found the following error: 0xc000000d. I've looked into it but it sounds like everyone else who has that same issue can't start their computer at all, but i can boot my computer just fine. My computer just shuts down randomly. i also found another error: %%-2147467259. I did a memory test and that came out with no issues. It's definetly not overheating as i'm getting temperatures of 21 celcius. Also, I'm not very familiar with the even viewer so i have no clue if i'm looking in the right place. I'm pretty sure i get the same order of events before it shuts down. Any help would be great!!

I was running 3DMark06 and got a BSOD code 124. After that every time I boot Event Viewer logs Error Codes ID 3012 and 3011. Attached are screenshots of both.

I googled this and found two different threads where someone suggested to rebuild the performance counters. Both responses were basically the same, below is one. Neither of the OP's came back and said if this worked for them.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Re: LoadPerf 3011, 3012
Hi-
I had the same problem with LoadPerf and here is what I found out:
All performance counter names and explain text are maintained in string tables managed by the performance counter subsystem (Perflib).

The current contents of the performance counter string tables are corrupted and cannot be displayed. To correct the problem, rebuild the string tables.

User Action
To rebuild the string tables, on the computer that displayed the message, at the command prompt, type Lodctr /r
The contents of the string tables are automatically rebuilt.

I hope this helps
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Since this was from 2008 (XP?) and the other response was for Vista I wanted to see if the guru's at SevenForums thought that this was okay before I did this.

Here are the screenshoots of my two errors.

A:After BSOD Event Viewer Logs Event ID 3012 and 3011 every time I boot

Rebuilding the string tables as outlined in my first post fixed the problem.

Hi all,

i tried loading the eventvwr.msc file from system32 folder directly as well as from the administrator tools, but i get:

"event log service is unavailable. verify that the service is running."

so i try to start the event log service, from the services.msc program;
whenever i try to start windows event log from services i get the message:

"Windows could not start the windows event log service on local computer.
Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified."

how can i specify the path?
or
how can i resolve the problem?

any help would be appreciated please---thanks

A:HELP need to solve this problem asap - Unable to start event viewer/event log service

Fire up regedit and find this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog

With "Eventlog" highlighted on the left pane, you should be able to see a value called "ImagePath" on the right. ImagePath should be equal to this:

%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted

If you can't see "ImagePath" in that location, or if it's not set to the text above, that's almost certainly your problem. If you're in the habit of using "registry cleaners", that might be the cause.

Hi,

I was hoping somebody could offer an insight on the below, as searching around I've not found much to go on other than "overheating"

Basically my laptop has been having very high temperatures for a long time (usually ~60C for CPU and often 100-110 for GPU...insanely high, in other words) For example, see how hot the machine gets just by resuming from a sleep (this is all within a minute or so):

I have been seeing the following error in event viewer each time I start Windows (4 entries) for some time:

So today I bit the bullet and had the back cover off the laptop and noticed what a bad state the thermal compound was in, for both the CPU and the chipset chip, so wiped it off using TIM Cleaner, and then applied new thermal compound and put the laptop back together. I was actually shocked because for the first time since I can remember, I could feel cold air blowing from the vents of my laptop! I logged into Windows and noticed that my temperatures had fallen and were staying at around the below:

Not as low as I'd like but a massive improvement. Trouble is, I am still getting the WHEA-Logger event errors in Windows Event Viewer ('processor core') and wondered if this was not in regards to overheating after all?

The plus side is my laptop is now almost totally silent - the way it must have been when I bought it new 3 years ago! But I was wondering how to investigate these WHEA-Logger errors, if anyone has any advice that'd be great.

First, well done on applying the thermal paste to the cpu/gpu. I assume you cleaned the vents as well. Did you use arctic silver 5 (just curious)?

I wonder if the processor could have been damaged from the heat. Are you experiencing any BSODs or other problems? You can run Prime95 to test your system. And Furmark for gpu.

Welcome to the forums Marioo!

Have you tried a system restore to a point before these errors started? (Easiest things first) You could also try a sfc/scannow, to find and possibly repair any corrupted system files. We have many fine tutorials here at the forums, written by some very knowledgeable people, heres a link to one if you haven't did this before :

Hello everyone,

I keep seeing this error appear several times a day, even during idle, in my Event Viewer. I did a clean install of build 10586 less than a month ago. I'm not having any overt issues yet, but the error is disturbing.

I have spent a few hours researching this and I can't find any reports of similar issues or even what the file metastore\meta.edb is for. Is this hopefully one I can just rename and it'll automatically create a new one?

After too many unexplained problems, I decided to reinstall Windows 8.1 Pro x64, and migrate off of SBS 2011 Standard. In addition to the primary workstation that can't read any event logs, I built five Server 2012 R2 servers (Hyper-V host, Active Directory
VM, Exchange 2013 VM, SQL Server 2014 VM, and WSUS VM).

I was diagnosing why my workstation's Outlook cannot reach the local Exchange Server.   I tried to look at the event logs, and found the
Event Viewer cannot open the event log or custom view.  Verify that Event Log service is running (it is) or the query is too long (whatever that indicates).  The request is not supported (50)
Looking at the directory of the event logs folder.  It appears that most logs are empty, which is understandable since it's a rebuilt installation.  I found a small number of Applications and Services Logs and it appears nothing was logged since
six days ago on 4/4/2016.   On support forums, I found many have this exact problem on Win 7, Win 8, and Win 10.  Of the solutions posted none of them would even execute on my Win 8.1 Pro x64 machine.  I tried clearing the event logs (WEVTUTIL
CL logfilename) and am told Failed to clear log .... The request is not supported.
It's very difficult to diagnose why Outlook 2013 cannot reach Exchange 2013, even if Outlook is installed on the Exchange server machine (just as a test).  The web-based Outlook owa, ecp, ... all work fine. ... Read more

It's been a while since I've experienced a BSOD as I'm viewing a video on youtube. It would freeze as if the audio was caught in mid-stream then BSOD, then would restart automatically. I go to Event Viewer after windows as loaded and I see Event 41 Kernel-Power in there.

I had this issue before and we found out that the motherboard was causing the issue. I have also replaced my video card and added additional memory and expanded to 16gb. Before, I only have 8gb.

Ran sfc/scannow with no errors found. Going to do chkdsk as well.

It's strange because this does not happen at all when I'm playing online games or even just standard browsing. It's when I play videos on youtube that there would be instances where this would happen. There are other times where I can view them without any issue at all.

Any ideas would be great.

Also, how can I attach the windows DMP file to scale it down as it is just really large?

Thanks again guys.

After around 45 seconds or so, everything comes up and works fine. If I double click on c: drive it comes right up. I don't have any more problems with going through different files or folders unless I close the window. If I double click on 'my computer' again, it does the same thing. It also creates a DCOM 10010 error in the event viewer.

2. If I go to the start menu and click on search, the start menu disappears, but nothing else happens. I don't know if it is related, but if I am saving a file, it doesn't auto fill/complete the file name if it already exists in the folder. It used to do this and would be helpful to have back.

3. I have 2 printers attached to my computer. One is a color laser and works fine. The other is an all-in-one printer/scanner/fax, but I only use it for scanning. I believe it creates a DCOM 10010 error in the event viewer. Again, it used to scan just fine. We currently have it plugged into a different computer and it works on that computer just fine.

A:Event Viewer Event Log Online Help Links don't function

I don't know much about this kind of stuff - but here is what I dug up using Microsoft's Process Monitor and Process Explorer.

The mmc app (event viewer) sends info to one of the svchost instances (netsvcs).

Svchost writes some info to the registry about a scheduled task and then runs that task.

This starts taskeng - which starts wscript.

Wscript runs a temporary VBS file that is supposed to send a URL to the operating system (shell).

The OS is supposed to open your default browser.

Here is the contents of the VBS file from my testing:

Code:
Set shell = createobject("wscript.shell")
Shell.run """C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\tmp78C0.url"""

You might try SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

And let's hope that some other forum member can suggest things that you should check.

&

Event ID 7023, Service Control Manager
The Peer Name Resolution Protocol service terminated with the following error:
%%-2140993535

A:Event ID 7001 and 7023 Shows in Event Viewer a lot.

Just FYI - I usually ignore these errors when they show up.
BUT, if they're associated with freezes we'll need to have a deeper look.

Please post this info even though you're not reporting BSOD's: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

Hi,

we have some servers (mainly for IIS roles) that sit behind a proxy server.
Is there a way to set the windows security event log to listen to x-forwarder headers (when present) and include the real source client IP in the event? I know that IIS does this automatically in it own log- however when searching for user lockout events
we do so in the windows security event log on the domain controller- not having the info there makes lockouts very difficult to track (sadly we have no siem or log management tool)

While playing war thunder on steam my screen went black and i couldn't do anything. I restart my computer and play again it crashes. After one more time i look at my event viewer and find critical error event ID:41. I don't whether its the game or my pc.

A:BSOD playing war thunder, Event viewer event 41

Critical error - Event ID 41 is (most likely) when you forced the system to restart (usually by holding the power button down).

You have a NETGEAR WG111v3 Wireless-G USB Adapter:

I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win8/8.1 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 and later - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win8/8.1 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

I noticed that you don't have Secure Boot and/or UEFI enabled. If you were having problems with it and changed it, please let us know.

It's not necessary to enable it now. But, should you reinstall Windows at some point in the future, please enable it first.

I mention this because it may happen that (one day) the system won't boot. This can be caused by a program changing your UEFI settings, or an update of the UEFI resetting it to default values.

To test and see if this is the cause, boot into the UEFI and see if the settings have been changed. If uncertain, try with Secure Boot both on and off (and the UEFI on UEFI or Legacy (CSM))

If it still doesn't boot after trying this, then move on to other troubleshooting tools as it's not likely to be due to this.
