I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My HP Envy TS 17 Notebook with Beats audio has always had a very low maximum volume. I have looked at other posts with similar issues and tried those recommendations. I have gone into the Playback Devices properties screen and maxed everything, I have reinstalled drivers, all with no luck. The max volume is extremely low. I am getting very frustrated with this "high quality" audio that this product claimed. Any ideas out there?

I have had this laptop for a few months and after a few weeks I noticed that the sound was not working properly. If i am playing audio thorugh the speakers the sound will gradually get quieter until I can't hear it at all. After plugging headphones in sound can be heard through the headphones and on unplugging of the headphones sound will play through the speakers again at full volume. After a  few minutes, sometimes up to an hour or so this repeats and I have to plug and unplug headphones to get sound working again.I have tried troubleshooting several times, sometimes this gets the speakers working again but sometimes headphones are the only way. What do you suggest?

Hi guys...
I just plugged my Onkyo 6.1 Channel (S-680) to my computer. I connected the receiver to the Digital Out port of my motherboard (Intel 915GV Chipset-Asus PTGD1 - LA). It uses the Realtek ALC880 drivers. Whenever I open Sound Effect Manager and do the Speaker Test, sound comes only from my front speakers. The rears/centre/sub all light up but no sound is played. However, while running games/music/films I get sound from all my speakers (though not very satisfactory and not real surround sound). Can anyone please help me with this?

Also, I can't open Realtek HD Audio Manager (RTHDCPL.exe). Only RTLCPL.exe (Sound Effect Manager) works. When I click on RTHDCPL.exe nothing happens. Please do help out.

A:No Sound From Surround/Centre/Subwoofer In Realtek Sound Effect Manager Test

try this:

1) try to go to the settings of your sound effect manager & there are selections there for 2.0, or what ever you may find that corresponds to your speaker channel.

2) if nothing corresponds to the given selections, try to download the latest audio driver from your motherboard's manufacturer website.

3) otherwise, you need to plug-in a sound card that has the feature to play with 6.1 channel audio.

did all the speakers sound when test in via hd audio deck or windows 7 audio control panel?

if yes, most likely you will need to enable the 'upmix' feature of VIA. I'm not sure what is it called, but in Realtek it is called Realtek Speaker Fill or Dolby ProLogic IIx. If there isn't any, you may want to try Channel Mixer for foobar2000.

Hi, as stated in the subject, I am unable to hear any sound from my speakers since upgrading to the windows 7 64 bit. I followed the other post that I found on this but I still cannot hear any sound.

I have a dell inspiron 531. The hardware ids from the device manager are

I have installed the realtek drivers and they as working but I still get nothing but a slight hiss from my speakers. I have tried them on my laptop and they work fine.

Does anybody know what might be causing this? I am half tempted to get a new sound card but I am reluctant as it says my existing one is working (it just seems to have forgotten to tell the speakers!)

If anybody knows a fix for this I really would be eternally grateful

Many thanks

A:Sound card drivers show as working but still no sound

Let's start by right clicking the speaker icon in your system tray and select playback devices from the options...right clik on the speakers and set as default. You can select to disable the independent headphone jacks if the speakers are plugged to the sound card. Then clik on properties and go to the levels tab at top. Set the slider to 100%. Go back to the playback devices window and select Configure button. Test the individual speakers by clicking on them one at a time.

I have an HP envy M6 -n012dx Notebook that I bought about 3 years ago. Things were getting screwy with the preinstalled software so I did a clean windows 8.1 64bit install. I have installed the latest support assistant but am having issues with the bios upgrade. This PC has an AMD A10-4600M chipset. My bios version is F.36Ap1. The support assistant brings up the same bios version I already have believing I need to upgrade to it. There is a much newer bios version listed on hp website for windows 8.1 64bit and I need it. It is version F24 Rev.A, SP76947.exe. I have tried to manually download it and install it using the usb thumbdrive method but encountered problems. The first thing it says is: Update, this bios is blocked on this device. It prompts me to use a USB thumb drive or copy bios image to any location. I remember seeing a message when previously trying this method which mentioned that I do not have the bios update environment. So I installed the Bios configuration utility from HP. I have the PDF directions for using it but have no idea where to start. The USB thumb drive method is not working, I assume I need to set up the bios configuration utility but I have no idea how to do that. I need help with this issue.

I did recently;

Sometimes the BIOS Setup doesn't appear in starting up but it shows a message that something like there's a problem in BIOS, I forgot the exact message then below there's a choice:

Press F2 to load defaults.................etc.

Pressing F1 it goes me to BIOS Setup

It does sound like a failing (or failed) CMOS battery. Is the BIOS clock/date resetting itself to the same time/date? What is the make and full model number of the laptop/notebook?

A:Headphone test OK but no sound

Hi OldLou06488,

If I understand correctly, you are experiencing two issues with 'Audio Playback':

Issue 1

My normal hookup is HDMI out from my laptop and in to 19" Vizio
I never got audio through HDMI out.

Issue 2: Not Getting Audio playback with 'Headphones and USB Speakers' (Was functional before)

I used headphones, stereo from the #1 stereo jack, audio OK
For 3 or 4 months I bought Sonawave USB Stereo clip on speaker, great.
When I get up early AM, between 4 and 5, I switch to headphone not to disturb wife
Yesterday I could not hear any audio from headphones.
I do get audio for USB

You may find the steps listed below helpful:

1. Since you are experiencing audio issues with multiple 'audio devices' (Headphones, Speakers, USB, etc), it is unlikely that the power and volume settings on the 'devices' could be the root cause. Please check the 'Volume settings' in 'Windows' to ensure that it is properly configured.

- Open 'Volume Mixer' by clicking the 'Start icon' > 'Control Panel' > 'Hardware and Sound' > Underneath 'Sound', click 'Adjust system volume' > Move the slider upwards to increase the 'volume'.
- Also ensure that the 'Mute button' isn't turned on. If yes, click it to 'turn off muting'.

2. Configure the 'Sound Settings' on the notebook:
- Use key combination '<Fn><Page Up>' to increases the 'volume' of 'integrated speakers and external speakers', if attached.

Hope someone can help?
I have been trying for over a month now to get this fixed with no luck. The beginning of this month (FEB) I had a problem with my headset microphone not working while playing internet games with my son in PA (I live in FL). The headset microphone is connected to what is a program made by MS called Game Voice where we can talk to each other while playing the games. After the Microphone went out I uninstalled the game from my computer as I wanted to redo some settings anyway. That day I purchased a new headset with a new microphone and reinstalled the Game Voice Program. Part of the installation is a sound check using the sound check wizard that is in WinXP Pro. The check would start and get partially through the check and I would receive an error message "Sound Hardware Test. An error occured during direct play voice setup. The error code is 0X80004005" with an OK box to click on. After clicking on the OK another error message is received: Windows Error: "Windows cannot execute Dpvsetup.exe Use add/remove programs control panel to install". Now I have had Dell on the phone for at least 15 hours and they have been unable to fix this problem. They have also sent me approximetly 200 pages of items to try to fix the problem through the Internet. I finally went on vacation to cool off and I haven't contacted Dell since I returned. I have a Dell Dimesion 8200, 1.7GB Pent 4, with 40GB hard drive and 512DDR of Memory. I need some expert ... Read more

Hello Guys!
Today I'm going to buy "Sub woofer" (2.1 channel) so how do i test its sound quality?
If you have good sound testing Mp3 file Please give it me!
I get some rough idea in "ehow.com" so i think its not enough.

A:How to test Sub Woofers sound qulity?

You test speakers with your own ears.

Test recordings or test equipment won't do you any good if you don't like the sound the speakers produce and can't adjust them to your preference with tone controls or an equalizer.

People have their own preferences in what they like and won't be satisfied just because their speakers passed some test, or cost so much, look cool, or have certain bass or treble response, etc.

You can't listen to them with a piece of equipment--you have to use your ears.

You could try to do some sort of A/B comparison with another speaker system just to see which you prefer.

I'm having problems running Microsofts Sound Hardware Test Wizard.
Every time I've tried running it the progress bar goes to the end and then I get this error:

"An error occured during DirectPlay Voice Setup. The error code is 0x80004005.)

Then this message:

"Windows cannot execute DpvSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install."

I've tried running the test from different areas of windows:
- Sounds and Autio Devices Properties
- MSN Audio Tuning Wizard
- SideWinder Game Voice
- DirectX Diagnostics

I have the same results no matter where I run the wizard.

Here are my computer specs:
- Windows Xp(everything is updated)
- AMD Tbird 1200
- Abit KT7E motherboard
- 512 megs of SDRAM(PC133)
- ATI Raedon 9500 Pro 128 meg video card
- Directx 9
- Herculies Gamesurround Fortissimo 7.1 soundcard with updated Drivers
- Still have around 5 gigs of my 20 gig Hard Drive free

I use to have a SoundBlaster Live Value before and I never used to get this problem.

It's troubling because I've just purchased a Microsoft Game Voice and it requires you to run this wizard before you can use it.

I've tried all sorts of fixes from the Microsoft site like:
- Going into the registry and manually setting Fullduplex=3, Halfduplex=3, mic????=2.

- Reinstalling Directx 9

Hello, I'm trying to repair a Dell L433c desktop on which the hard drive broke. After installing a new HD and reinstalling Win98 OS, the sound no longer functions. I have installed the latest drivers for the integrated sound hardware (Sound Blaster Ensoniq AudioPCI, model# ES1373).

In addition to the sound not working, the device also does not show up in the device manager. I've also run Belarc Advisor and it does not show up there either. Under Multimedia Properties in the Control Panel, the audio devices under the Devices tab says there is no such device installed. I have also verified that the integrated sound is set to enabled in cmos.

I'm beginning to suspect that the sound hardware might be broken and would like to know if there is a way to test this. If anyone can help me out with this or has any ideas of solutions I have overlooked, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. Also, I no longer have the system restoration disk from Dell, and Dell tech support was less than helpful, let alone friendly. Thanks for any responses.

Cheers all,

Problem is as stated in the thread; I downloaded, untar'd and set the theme up today. I know it's specifically the "Close Window" sound since it's unique from the others. I'm referring to the following actions in particular (there may be more things I could do to proc it, but I haven't checked yet)...
Opening a Program
Opening a Folder in Windows Explorer
Starting a new Windows Explorer Session
Closing a Window (expected function)
Closing a Windows Explorer Session (expected function)
Those not followed by (expected function) have a different sound assigned to them, although the Close Window sound plays anyways. Not always immediately after the action is performed, either - there can be anywhere from a 1 to 15 second delay before the .wav plays.

The sounds are located in C:\Windows\Media\AltimitOS\ with AltimitOS being a custom folder I copied in. I originally untar'd everything to the desktop, then created and moved everything into the folder and tried running the theme from there. I've made sure all file paths are leading to the \Media\AltimitOS folder.

Any help is appreciated. Cheers,

Hi, Try the following. Download the Realtek HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74867.exe When done, hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter.  Hold down the power button continuously for 30 seconds, then release it. Plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Should I try uninstalling all the Windows 10 updates? I can see the updates back to September, and that may have been around the time the problem started. The sound will work every single day when I turn the computer on, but anywhere from two to fifteen minutes later it will just stop working. There doesn't seem to be any hardware issues. I tried re-installing drivers, updating drivers, using HP Support Assistant, had someone take a look at it. I don't know what to do to fix this? It doesn't say the sound card is malfunctioning or anything either. Would wiping my hard-drive fix it? I don't want to do that if it won't.

Windows 8.1 64-bit
Realtek High Definition Audio
Motherboard: B85-G41 PC Mate(MS-7850)
Speakers: Logitech X-530

The set includes 4 speakers ( two front and two back), Center, and Subwoofer.

I'm not using the two back speakers.

In the RealTek Audio manager's sound test, I hear sound from the front left, front right, center, and subwoofer.

Under enhancements I have speaker fill checked.

When I play any music from YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, I'm only hearing the sound from the front left, front right and subwoofer. For some reason it will not use the center. Should I hear sound from the center?

A:Sound Test Plays All Speakers Music Won't

Another quick thing about this. When I play something from YouTube and it has an advertisement, the sound in the advertisement plays from the center speaker! Isn't that a kick in the pants! Any windows sounds, like new e-mail notification, plays from center speaker. Seems isolated to only music.

How can I test the boot sounds using a speaker with a + and - wire?

A:How to test motherboard sound using 2 pin speaker and 7 pin JFP2?

Pins 2 and 8, according to your picture, are the connection for a speaker.

I don't know if that will give you the boot sounds. Depends on what that is setup for on your motherboard.

Hi Fellas,

Ok so the problem started with some corruptions in 'mountmgr.sys' after successfully repairing Windows i was able to boot again and everything seemed to work just fine (incl audio) until the next day when i boot my system the Audio wont work at all! No external Audio Card installed, i use the onboard system.

After a brief search on Internet i tried restarting 'Windows Audio' under services.msc (it was already started and was set to Automatic already) but this didnt work for me. The devices were listed with drivers installed so i headed to Playback devices, and it gave me error "Failed to play test tone", have tried disabling Enhancements, changing sample rate, but without luck.

Also tried uninstalling the devices and let the system pick the drivers for me - no luck again! tried the drivers at Dell Support still no luck. I am desperately avoiding 'fresh os installation' here as this is my office PC (no tech guys/small office).

Yep i even tried SFC /scannow but it wont repair some violations - i am not too technical with this but a quick look at CBS log told me something is wrong with jsproxy.dll and wininet.dll so i even replaced them with known good copies after a couple of failed attempts with SFC, yet the prob persist with these DLLs and Audio.

Please help

Hello, I've been trying for over two months to troubleshoot this problem and I thought maybe someone here could help.

What is Happening:
- All my Audio appears in the Sound settings pop-up window, but most say they are "Not Plugged in"
- The ones I use normally are Check-marked as green and say they are active.
- When I try to test the audio an error pops up reading "Failed to play test audio"
- When I open Windows Media Player and click a song to play a red X pops up and reads "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file."
- All Drivers are currently updated, but when I go to the Update Panel there are a lot of "Pending download"s that never download or update.
- I get frequent BlueScreens when the computer tries to install updates while shutting down. And often a few times during start-up.
- I've tried plugging in the headphones in all the available headphone jacks, but none work. The headphones work on other devices.
- I have Windows10(I only had the option of choosing Win8 when posting this)

What I've Tried:
- Turning it off and on again
- Updating drivers, some manually
- Disabling sound enhancements
- Using the Command Prompt in Admin settings to run scans
- Rolling back drivers to when it used to work
- Re-updated drivers when the above didn't work
- Scanned for virus' and malwear
- Tried DriverEasy
- Tried several verified programs you have to buy that repair the system
- Tried an ... Read more

I have good sound with other speakers on this desktop, but I wanted to save some workspace on my desk, so I recently got a new AX510 sound bar and attached it onto a Dell 2208WFP monitor, one of the monitors listed for that soundbar.  It powers up via the AC port built in to the monitor, just like it should, and I've correctly connected the audio cable on the soundbar audio output on my desktop.  But there's no sound at all.  I did get a static "pop" once... but no other sound.
So I am trying to figure out whether the sound bar is defective, or if this is possibly a Windows 10 issue, as I've read a few odd posts on the internet about people suddenly finding that previously working sound bars don't work in Windows 10.... or some other incompatibility (my desktop is a Studio XPS 8100, Windows 10).  I realize all of my equipment is not the latest, but it's all been in great working condition and the one new addition is the sound bar... I did plug my old speakers back in again, and they still work just fine.
I was thinking I can test the sound bar by connecting it to another computer at work (tomorrow) that's running Windows 7.  to determine if it's a Windows 10 issue -- or if it just doesn't work at all -- but would that be a definitive test it's not a Dell computer?  Any other ways to diagnose the problem and pin it down?  I can conceivably still return the sound bar if I determine it's defect... The Problem:

when I do a sound test, I can hear the audio in the speakers. However when I try to play a midi file, or a DVD, the movie plays, but NO SOUND.

Usually if the sound test works, the audio plays in the speakers. So I am not sure what is happening here.

The History of the issue:

I Upgraded my emachine from Vista to Windows 7. I went to the Emachine website to update the audio drivers. The drivers that Emachine has are outdate.

I went to the Realteck website and downloaded the newest drivers.

I noticed in the device manager that their is a NVIDIA High Definition Audio, and a Realtek High Definition Audio listed.

Ok, so here is the setup.

I have a HDMI Visio TV plugged into the Emachine. Audio workes fine if I disable Realtek High Definition Audio in the device manager.

Here is the big problem: When I plug a simple set of speakers (that work on other computers) into the back of the computer, the audio will not work on the speakers.

If I enable the Realtek audio in device manger, I can get the Realteck audio options screen. Where Realtek sees that I plugged the speakers in the rear of the machine.

when I do a sound test, I can hear the audio in the speakers. However when I try to play a midi file, or a DVD, the movie plays, but NO SOUND.

Usually if the sound test works, the audio plays in the speakers. So I am not sure what is happening here.

Can anyone advise.

A:Sound Test works, but speakers wont work

Ok, I found the problem, and wanted to share. I was using a VGA extension cable to connect the computer to a 55" LCD TV across the room. I noticed during trouble shooting that the left pin, on the second row of the VGA extension cable was pushed back. When I oulled the pin out, and reconnected the VGA cords, the sound worked GREAT. I have no idea what a video cord has to do with audio, but it worked. If anyone knows the teck on this issue, please shoot me the understanding. Thanks for this site!

Video recorded with the odd sound. you may need head phones and a lot of volume to hear it clearly. The dominant sound is just the GPU fan spooling up.

Strange sound from my GPU during ATi tool run. - YouTube

I know its something electrical but other than that I have no idea. It doesn't seem to hurt anything but it is annoying. Its also exclusive to ATi tool and [email protected] Games and graphic benchmarks don't produce the sound.

A:PC making an odd high pitched sound during ATi tool test.

To me it sounds like a bad fan bearing.
I would open up the case and run the test again to make the sound start again, then go to the case and listen around the case for the source of the sound.

Okay....here goes......I have no sound on a system I've built. It has a biostar mobo with an onboard Realtek '97 for VIA Audio Controller. The OS is Windows XP SP3 with everything updated. I have installed all the proper drivers, directly from either Biostar or Realtek. Whether I use simple headphones or simple stereo (amplified) computer speakers, I have no sound. The Windows hardware test (the one where you read into the microphone and it shows both the record and playback levels shows great level in each, but I have no sound, despite what Windows says.

I've installed all Chipset drivers as well, directly from Biostar.

I've run a dxdiag and this is the error code it is showing - "DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

dxdiag also noted that the the ALCXWDM.SYS is not digitally signed by WHQL (the Windows Hardware Quality Lab), but I have never had that be an issue. Many drivers are not signed.

Anybody have any idea? I've built dozens of systems over the years, repaired many more, and I have never dealt with this.

A:No sound... despite what Windows, dxdiag, and hardware test shows

Based on all you say, my best guess is it's a hardware issue as all the drivers/software/Windows seems to think everything is fine. (maybe the audio jacks are broken or not connecting to mobo? idk... just guesses)

I've run a dxdiag and this is the error code it is showing - "DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)Click to expand...

That result happens when you ran the DirectSound test and you told Dxdiag you couldn't hear anything (i.e. user verification is what failed)

dxdiag also noted that the the ALCXWDM.SYS is not digitally signed by WHQL (the Windows Hardware Quality Lab), but I have never had that be an issue. Many drivers are not signed.Click to expand...

Agree, that's not the issue

The Windows hardware test (the one where you read into the microphone and it shows both the record and playback levels shows great level in each, but I have no sound, despite what Windows says.Click to expand...

As far as windows is concerned, it thinks your sound is fine (again, makes me think is purely hardware is my guess)

/* EDIT */
One other thought (tho don't know if applies) but under Ctl Panel->Sound, i think under Audio tab(?), check that the default playback device is set correctly (in case it lists more then one playback device)

I bought an HP Envy X2 in May and haven't used it much for multi media. But having just downloaded some movies and video to the device I've realised that I can barely hear any audio through the headphones or speakers. The volume is up at 100% and it doesn't matter what jack socket I use for the heaphones. I've checked for device driver updates but I appear to be up to date. I can't believe that Beats would put their name to such rubbish sound, so figure that I'm doing something wrong. Help !!

A:HP Envy X2 sound too quiet

Hello BomberC, Please follow these steps and let me know if it helps. Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'. Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.  Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'. Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows and see if this has helped at all. Good luck!
