Thinkpad X270 WWAN Compatibility

Q: Thinkpad X270 WWAN Compatibility

Hello, My x270 (20K6) has a broken motherboard. I have found one on ebay (20HM). My 20K6 has the Sierra EM7455 Card which works great. Does anyone know if the 20HM is also compatible (whitelist, etc) with this card? Having a very difficult time answering this question using the lenovo websites. It looks like they are recommending the Fibocom L831-EAU. Thanks for any light anyone can shed - appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everybody I bring support to a Thinkpad x270. It ran Windows 10 in the main SSD and client decided to buy an extra SSD for saving files. So i bought a Trascend TS512GMTS400 and installed in WWAN slot. Now my problem is every random minutes, The Transcend Disk it just disappears from Device Manager so it became not accessible. In fact if I suspend and restore the notebook, the trascend disk appears connected again and I can use it as usual... but just for few minutes. I tried:- Configure the power manager to never suspend disks. Did not help.- Upgrade BIOS firmware. Did not help.- Using Lenovo Storage Device Firmware to update firmware's disk: It looks like has no support with Trascend SSDs. Now i really don't know what to do. Are there BIOS settings that could help? is this disk compatible with these notebooks? I appreciate every idea or help I can get. Thank you very much.

Hi Team,I have a Thinkpad x270 (System Model 20HNCTO1WW) and have purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad EM7455 4G LTE Mobile Broadband (Part No: 4XC0M95181).I was very surprised that I only saw two signal bars compared to my Singeltel-Optus LTE USB stick (HUAWEI E3372) which shows four signal bars. Also the throughput (up and download) seems to be faster through the USB stick compared to the now integrated and embedded Sierra Wireless EM7455 Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A. Do I have some sort of antenna interfeerence/performance? Any other issues I should consider. Thank you for your feedback Cheers Jose

A:X270 WWAN perfromance

Welcome to the CommunityBad signal possible causes:- wwan antennas cables inside of the laptop are routed rough, with corners- red and blue cables are connected to the modem unproperly (mixed)- the antenna cable or connector is broken- the connection of the cable and modem's connector isn't reliable- the modem is connected to the cellular base station with low signal strength- etcLow performance possible causes:- low signal/noise ratio- the connection is established to 3g network, not LTE one- em7455 and e3372 operate in different network frequency bands with different signal strength and bandwidth- etcTwo commands below might show some information. Type them in the command prompt window and show the output here:netsh mbn sh con int=*netsh mbn sh sig int=*:

I have a disk spinning X270 and I plan to upgrade the SSD. After reviewing a bunch articles I decide to use the WWAN slot.I saw a thread using a transcend 256G M2 SATA as following,https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X270-Bios-Update-v1-11-Broke-my-M-2-SSD-WWAN-... What I am really interested in is that if I can use the WWAN slot to install a M.2 2242 PCIe, instead of the SATA, such as a Toshiba RC100 M.2 2242 240GB NVMe PCIe 3.0 x2 64-layer 3D BiCS TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ... There are posts on Reddit saying that the 2242 has to be SATA, but it was in early 2017. Anybody know if it is doable to put a M.2 PCIe in the WWAN and boot the system on?

Good evening all! I am a very happy owner of an X270 laptop, running Gentoo Linux. Everything (with the exception of fingerprint recognition) works very well indeed. I want to put a second SSD in the WLAN slot, but I am struggling to find clear specifications as to what can be fitted. Can anyone please point out where I should be able to find this information, or better still give me a clear specification so I can order a drive. I am looking at https://www.scan.co.uk/products/256gb-scanfx-sm961-polaris-m2-nvme-mlc-v-nand-ssd-pcie-30-x4-read-31...It appears to be correct, but I am not sure if the physical size is OK or not. Many thanks for your support!

A:SSD Specification for X270 WWAN slot

Hello and welcome,

I don't have hands on experience but based on these documents that SSD won't work.

First, the 2nd SSD goes in the WWAN slot - presuming you don't have WWAN or WiGig already.  The WWAN slot doesn't support NVMe, and isn't that physical size.

http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20X270/ThinkPad_X270_Platform_Specificatio...

"Some: 128GB M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, in WWAN slot as 2nd Storage,
mutually exclusive with WWAN and WiGig"

Looking at the HMM, the SSD tha would fit is 2242 SATA.

Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad X270

The SSD you linked is 80mm NVMe and could go in the primary slot - with proper frame and cable - but not in the WWAN slot.

I would like to add an SSD to the WWAN slot in my x270. I have read around that the format is M.2 NGFF 22*42mm. This KingSpan seems to be the cheapest option I can find. A similar KingSpec on Amazon. The 2nd link shows the CrystalDiskMark scores, and they are way down on my current main SSD in the x270. Are these cheap SSD drives worth it? Trust worthy? Is there a better / faster option that isn't going to break the bank? As much advice as you have is appreciated.

A:Best SSD for WWAN slot in x270? (M.2 NGFF)

From the documents, that's a SATA slot.  ~ 500MB/sec is the best it can support.

Gurus, Here is what I know so far, could use some help understanding if I'm using a hard drive that is no longer supported (brand new laptop and hdd) I have an X270 with PCIe SSDI added an M.2 SSD in the WWAN slot (confirmed with Lenovo support and parts department that this was supported for my configuration) This worked great in BIOS version 1.10, I had it setup with the M.2 SSD as my boot drive with Win10, and the secondary (stock) SSD as my Data/Storage drive. The other day I applied BIOS update version 1.11 for the X270.  The BIOS was applied successfully, and after restart, I get an error:"2102 Detection Error on storage device (M.2 SATA SSD)"   and won't boot into Windows (that's by boot drive) I was able to roll back to BIOS 1.10 and it again recognizes the M.2 SSD driveI applied the latest BIOS version 1.12, and I get the 2102 Detection Error.  Same with v1.11  Is it possible that BIOS 1.11 removes my ability to use M.2 WWAN Slot drives, or just certain ones?It seems like I can't upgrade my BIOS anymore, on a brand new laptop...  Thanks,Mike

I bought two brand new X270's WWAN upgradable and bought EM7455 cards separately. I installed the cards as directed. When I booted the laptop the first time after installation, a warning message saying something to the effect of "unknown network hardware EM7455." Windows didn't detect the newly installed card. So I did a CMOS reset (removed the extra battery, disabled the built-in battery on the BIOS and pressed the CMOS reset button to the left of the battery bay). After the CMOS reset, Windows recoginized a new hardware by the name of "Sierra Wireless EM7455 Qualcomm" but couldn't install the driver (see the attached screenshot). I did install Lenovo's EM7455 driver (total file size 191MB) and didn't work. It tried to install it but it failed. However, the device's name was changed to Qualcomm COM Port (3) and it was still not installed properly. Hi I am hoping others have experienced the same issue.  I have a brand new x270 running windows 7 64bit. I have installed Sophos encryption which uses bitlocker. When I tried to encrypt the SSD a message popped up and said TPM was not available. I rebooted the system and checked the TPM version in the BIOS it was set to 2.0 so changed to 1.2, logged back into windows and the encryption completed successfully.  However the problem i now have is every time i boot up i am asked to to provide the retrieval codes to get back into Windows. I believe the issue is with the TPM chip holding the first attempt in its memory. How do I clear it though?? From within bitlocker management in control panel I can clear tpm but it asks for a password. I have never supplied one !!!!.  If i reboot the laptop and again check the settings in the BIOS there is an option to Clear TPM with the option "Enter" but when selected it appears not to do anything. Has anyone had this issue or know how to get around it please. At the monent I have had to suspend bitlocker until resolved. Thanks in advance

It seems that Lenovo has released today first infos of upcoming models including X270: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10940/lenovo-updates-the-thinkpad-lineup-new-models-welcome-changes I have been postponing laptop purchase because I want one with QHD or better resolution, thunderbolt3 and ability to charge with standard USB type-C charger. Now it seems that for some reason that I cannot understand Lenovo has still decided not to include QHD or QHD+ resolutions to quite many of the upcoming models, including X270, Yoga 370, Thinkpad 13 and T470. It is now already 4.5 years ago from the moment when Apple Released Macbook Pro retina with QHD equivalent resolution. In addition some of the articles claim that the new USB type-C port in X270 will NOT have thunderbolt3 availability. And it is like 5.5 years since Apple included thunderbolt. I really think we should start noise from this. If there will not be a serious portable workstation like X270 with QHD or better resolution and enough USB-slots (at least 3+1) and thunderbolt support I am seriously considering to switch away from Lenovo (e.g. Dell XPS 13). I know that some people prefer FullHD (e.g. for longer battery life) so there could be an option for both. I want QHD because 1. If you want to have two web browsers side by side without horizontal scroll bars you will need minimun QHD, 2. Hai, i recently bought a thinkpad x270 with machine type 20K5, and want to upgrade from 256GB to 500GB or 1TBso in my environment, there are two scenarios that can be done,1. moved my old SATA SSD from my X230 to my X2702. buy a 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD. My thinkpad x270 comes with a Samsung SSD PM961 NVMe PCIe M.2 256GB scenario 1 issue: bought a connector to change the NVMe connector to a SATA HDD Cable, which i already bought from ebay (https://goo.gl/ZqBcpi) but it didn't work, it's showing error 2100, which from the user guide stated that the HDD is broken. i'm contacting the seller for this. since the SATA SSD are working fine in my X230 Thinkpad. scenario no. 2 issue: then i was thinking, what if i upgrade the SSD with the same NVMe PCIe M.2? so i've listed a compatible NVMe PCIe SSD with 1TB storage:- 1024G,M.2,2280,PCIe3x4,SAM,OPAL 00UP438- 1T,M.2,2280,PCIe3x4,SAMSG,OPAL 00UP462- SSD,1T M.2 PCIe OPAL 2.0 00UP704- 1TB, M.2, 2280, PCIe 3x4, TOS, OPAL 00UP648- 1024G, M.2, 2280, PCIe3x4, SAM, OPAL 00UP492  For 2nd scenario, i've checked the price in online, and as it turns out, so very expensive, and i got confused along the way, since the PCIe, NVMe, SATA, SSD, has so many specification requirements so if i were to upgrade my SSD now, i need to find Samsung SSD PM961 NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB -- this is the best replacement part for scenario no. 2.but since the price is way more expensive, it's like having a new laptop just to upgrade. so searche... A:X270 Thinkpad (20K5) SSD Upgrade

A lot depends on what you do with the machine.  An SSD is much faster than a spinning drive, and the biggest improvement comes on startup and shut-down where lots of little files are read and written.  (eliminates latency due to spinning time) When you are reading or writing big files, the SSD is still faster, but the difference is less.  3X4 is certainly faster than 3X2, but you will hardly notice it with little files (like startup).  The difference is greater when moving a lot of data in large files.  If you are loading data to or from the Internet, the difference will be much less because the network throughput is more likely to be the bottleneck.  Most SSDs work.  I have used ADATA drives, but not that one.  When buying non-lenovo parts, always confirm the seller's return policy.

One more thing.  When a spinning drive fails, it usually dies slowly.  You have warning signs, like read errors, timeouts, etc.  You have a chance to get most of your data off.  SSDs usually die all at once.  There is no recovery, so backups are more critical.

My x270 will not start and has been giving me a tone code with a blank screen.  I tried using the Lenovo diagnostic app but it appears to be broken. I uploaded a video of the tone code.

A:What is this tone code? X270 Thinkpad.

Hello and welcome,

I played your video for the app on my S7.  Result below

I can't guarantee it "heard" things correctly, although it responded immediately.  Please give the app another try on your phone.

HiI am trying to build an x270 from a bootable ISO. I click Custom install but get no drives found at the "where do you want to install windows" stage. The full message is "load driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation" I guess this is due to the SSD driver missing but not sure how to find the correct driver, whether or not I need to inject it into the ISO, or even how to do it. Anyone done this before please!!! Thanks

Are there any photos available of the three options for the rear battery on the X270? The Lenovo ordering page lists the option, but gives no clue of the size or weight involved.  Any information will be gratefully received.

I need some help. My company is currently still running Windows 7, and we're unable to push it out via SCCM to the new ThinkPad x270s. However, we can install Windows 10 but have not migrated yet. Any thoughts?

Just purhcased the Thinkpad X270 and really loves it! However I can't find the shortcut key to turn off LCD display. Some previous Thinkpad user suggestion like FN+F3 , FN+F7 didn't work in this laptop. I know there are some 3rd party EXE tools could turn the screen off however I don't want to rely on them because of security. Anyone know the magic key combo for X270? Thanks!

Trying to set up a multiple montiors (Dell U2415s) via MST. The X270 has an HDMI out and I have now bought 2 different active HDMI to DP 1.2 adapters to set up multi stream. No Luck. Any insight?
