Preferred Solution: Dell XPS 13 9360 Coil Whine Issue fix??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently purchased the XPS 13 9360 (Kaby Lake) and have been using for a couple days.
I've noticed coil whine in the form of static sounds coming from the left side of the laptop, near the power connector.
There is very minimal noise when the laptop is on battery, where the noise is audible when your ear is next to the keyboard.
However, when connected to the power outlet the static becomes quite audible at a normal viewing distance. The static occurs frequently (especially when scrolling).
I tend to work in quite spaces with little ambient room noise, as I am easily distracted.
Is there a solution to resolving this coil whine issue? I feel like at this price point this should not be an issue (especially since is was well known in the earlier models).

I've got an annoying high pitched sound that comes from my graphics card (I think) whenever I play a game with mid-high graphics requirements. Now, I've read a bit about the subject, and have come to understand that the noise is caused by vibrations. Also, based on what I've read, it is unfixable.

My question is this. If coil whine is NOT heat related, when why does opening the side of my pc up and putting a fan on it stop the noise? Understand, this is a powerful commercial grade fan, but if there is bad coil whine coming out and I put the fan on it, it takes about a minute to stop.

I'm really just trying to understand this issue properly, so I can begin to work out a solution.
Right now the best one is: keep a big *** fan blowing on it.

Any thoughts?

I have a 3 month old XPS 13 9530 i7 512gb 16GB Windows 10 Model.
Over the last few weeks I have noticed a pretty loud (audible at over 10 feet away) electrical buzzing noise coming from the machine. The noise is worse if I scroll with the touchscreen or trackpad.
After speaking to Dell customer service, I have been informed by DELL that this is known issue (yep lots of issues documented on the web) but apparently this is completely software related (don't believe that either) and now they are refusing to help me unless I pay a fee for support technical support (I only have a standard warranty)
Firstly, I don't think this is just down to software. But am I the only person who thinks this is just unacceptable? I paid £1400 for this machine recently and now I have to use a pair of headphones to block out the loud noise.
I understand that software support is not included in the standard warranty but surely as this is a known problem I should not be subject to a further charge?
I'm starting to feel like I have been cheated...
Any help or advice would me much appreciated.

UPDATE: I had a call from a nice chap in Dell customer relations. He has authorised an engineer to visit and replace the motherboard, and then take it from there. Fingers crossed.
I'm not expecting to completely eliminate coil whine, but I would like to think I can attend meetings without annoying others at 6-10 feet away!

My Dell XPS 15 has an annoying "electrical buzzing" (coil whine).
The sound is only noticeable in a quiet environment but like most people that is the environment I do most my work in. Touching the touchpad (i.e. using the mouse) causes coil whine, holding down backspace causes coil whine, ANY user interaction with the notebook causes coil whine.
When left untouched I can hear subtle coil whine that peaks every second, but I consider that an acceptable level of sound as.
HERE -  This post suggests the cause is a faulty charger. I have had my XPS 9550 for near six months! Six months on a faulty power adapter due to the quality control on Dell's top of the line notebook.
What kind of damage could this have caused to the battery & other components?
Other Issues I've experienced with the DELL XPS 15 9550
- Speakers had terrible buzzing (software patch to fix this appears to be just lowering the maximum volume)
- Bluetooth Devices fail to connect but work fine with other PC's (Razer Orochi)
- Heavy Battery usage & overheat while it should be sleeping or off during transport (appears to be fixed)
- Display was replaced due to dead pixels in center of the screen. (CENTER - QC missed that on a 3K machine?)

This is the best Dell has to other in their Notebook range, I purchased such a expensive device because I expected the flagship notebooks to have a high standard of quality but as many other users seem to be reporting the quality control is ... Read more

Hi, I have a buzzling sound when playing games or gpu related things. I made a research on internet and most probably I have Coil Whine issue. It is not making me crazy but in a silent environment I can clearly hear that sound. I have two questions about it; - Does Coil Whine have any harm on device? Motherboard, gpu etc.?- What HP does with this problem? Is it repairable or device needs to be changed? - Also, my device is Pavilion 15-au111nt but could not find that device anywhere in HP site. My device is not listed among au-100 series support section. Why? Thank you.

HI. What coil does the motherboard refer to ?? ... HP does not sell electronic devices. If you specify more about the buzz, there are cases in the drivers of different generations that are coupled to the sound, I do not know if this is the case. Regards.

Hi,
Recently I bought the Dell XPS 15 9560 and has given me a lot of issues with the wifi and coil whine. The issue with the wifi is that, when I connect with my network, all the machines on that network are disconnected, en the machine itself can not connect to internet. The coil whine, the sound is so loud that it is not possible to enjoy the machine, the machine starts making a lot of sound when I fire up a simple process.
After encountering these issues I contacted Dell Service, and I could return the laptop and get a refund. Thanks for the great service Dell, seriously! But I really want this laptop, so when I get my refund I want to order the laptop again. But my question is, what are the chances that I get a laptop with the same issues again?
Thanks in advance!

Hello all,
Owner of a Dell XPS13 9350 which had coil whine audibly apparent from the top left corner of the keyboard/base and was at its worst when connected to AC.
After living with this issue for several months I finally decided to contact Dell Support.
To their credit, a week later a technician came to me to replace my motherboard.
This is unfortunately where my new problems started.
Immediately following the replacement, the keyboard was displaying an obvious pronounced lag between key strokes and anything registering on screen. The tech suggested it would improve with time, or that he could come out another appointment to reinstall windows.
Since this work, my laptop has been, for all intents and purposes, useless.
I have created a usb live boot of ubuntu which has displayed the same fault.
Windows 10 was also re-installed to rule out that possibility.
So, currently, I am left midway through study of the most difficult subject I will be studying, with a laptop that is completely useless for taking notes. As the laptop was purchased purely for studies, this i understandably frustrating.
Also, during this repair, the speakers on the laptop have stopped working!

Attempts have been made to contact Dell Support Australia, but they do not seem to appreciate the urgency of the situation.

Would any members here know of any further steps I could take to try and resolve this issue as quickly as possible?

Regards
Jamie

Hey everyone,
recently there has been coming some strange noise from my computer. I haven't been able to pinpoint it exactly, but I think it might be coil whine from my PSU. I managed to take a recording of it uploaded it here:
http://picosong.com/nH4Y
(you will need to raise the volume quite a bit, the sound starts at about 10 seconds in) As you can hear, it's not constantly there. It lasts for 6-7 seconds and then its fine for about 25 seconds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Is this PSU coil whine or something else?

I don't think it is a PSU coil whine, otherwise it would be constant. I think I remember someone stating, coil whines are audible even after PC shut down. Audible after PC shut down because the coil still has power, which is what causes the whine.

Sounded more of a cooling fan squall, but with less volume. It could be a mechanical drive squalling. Drive casings will dampen a squall, so it's not as loud.

Hello, So my desktop computer is from 2009 its now 4 years old, lately i started investigating why this super high pitched noise keeps whining in my ear, so i opened my computer and started listening on some of the parts, i found out that it was the psu, The coil whine only comes up when the computer is in windows and while gaming, But when its starting up or shutting doen its quiet, I think this is becouse im almost overloading it or something but i really shouldnt, its using an 90W amd cpu and a engt 430 gpu, it draw's like 150-200 watts at its max and i bearly pushes it that much, even with gpu and cpu at max the computer is running fine,
the psu is 300W so im almost maxing it but still, it should not whine like this. Can i fix the whine in some way? i heard you could put nail polish on the capasitors to stop the vibrations and the whine came from vibrations or something...

If you desktop power supply is making noise and its not the fan Replace it. Do not try to fix it. A power supply can hold voltages for a long time that can kill you.

Welcome to the windows 7 forums UdAkDev

Looking on google for coil whine shows a lot of hits and suggestions. One being that your PSU is not as powerful as it should be and another about some option in your graphics driver that you have to enable.

I purchased a Dell XPS 13 9360 (the new model). Overall, while clearly audible, I can live with the coil whine from the laptop. However, when I plug in my headphones, I can very clearly hear the coil whine over music while it is playing.
This issue affects both windows 10 and Linux, and so I think it might be a hardware issue. I really do love the laptop otherwise, so before I send the laptop back, I was wondering if there was any way I could get a USB headphone adapter (or a discount to purchase one).

I was hoping this wouldn't be an issue with the newer generation models, as it was my understanding this was fixed towards the end of the previous generation. Unfortunately, I have audible coil whine on my new XPS 15 9550 when plugged in to the power adapter. When disconnected from the adapter, the whine is much less noticeable. It is most noticeable for me when scrolling in Chrome, as an example. KB backlight makes no difference. It does get slightly better when the battery is fully charged, but is still quite audible to me.
Is anybody else experiencing this with the Skylake models? I am extremely disappointed at this point, I like everything else about this laptop other than the coil whine and the webcam being at the bottom of the display (which I can live with, unlike the coil whine).

Hello,
I recently had my motherboard switched by Dell on my new XPS 15 9560 due to a malfunctioning headphone jack. With the new motherboard with a working headphone jack I now suffer from coil whine. It is a low, buzzing irritating sound at all times. While gaming it sometimes becomes this high-pitched noise that is very irritating.
I had no coil whine issues on the old motherboard regardless of what I did. So this is not something I am imagining.
Is there anything I could try with drivers or the like to perhaps fix the problem? Or is a new motherboard the only option?

A:New XPS 15 9560 Coil whine - anything I can do with the software to fix it?

Replacement hardware is the only option -- while you can disable the low power states to lessen the problem, that will come at the cost of reduced battery runtime.

Hi everybody,
Last week I had to return the brand new 9350 QHD+ because of the coil whine noise. It was a real pity because I was in love with the rest, but it was simply too loud.
Now I am thinking again what to buy.
Is the design of the new XPS 13 Kaby Lake (9360) solving the coil whine problem?
If yes, I would prefer to wait and buy the new version.
I hope that someone from Dell can give me an asnwer here. Thank you very much in advance!

A:XPS 13 Kaby Lake: coil whine

This system is so new few if any users will have one in their hands.
Other thing to consider if it's an issue -- Kaby Lake will not run anything earlier than Windows 10, period - no work arounds, etc.  It's Windows 10 or nothing (Windows-wise) -- if that's an issue.

TLDR * Has my new PSU caused coil whine in my GPU?

My 8 month old computer developed a strange clicking noise coming from the PSU, dell insured me that my PSU was faulty and so they replaced it with a new one.
With the replacement PSU, the initial noise disappeared. However, I am now getting a loud high pitched screech when playing games, it sounds to me like "coil whine".
I have been trying to determine whether the coil whine is coming from the PSU or GPU, as they are positioned very close together. I never had this coil whine BEFORE my PSU was replaced. Only afterwards.
Could it be that the new PSU is effecting and potentially damaging my GPU with this coil whine, or is the new PSU the culprit.
I specifically experience this noise only when playing overwatch, i have tested with BF1 and it runs silently, which to me seems more graphically demanding. I have not tested with other games.
I will post my spec below for further clarification. Thanks for reading, any help or response is greatly appreciated.

Hi Just received my new lenovo Thinkpad T550 with a Samsung 512 GB SSD and in a silent environment it makes a strange noise (fans are off - so this is not the problem): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/46679366/Lenovo%20sound.m4a This becomes quite annoying when you work e.g. at night. After doing some research in this forum I found that this is the "coil whine bug".  I just tried this registry change mentioned in a different post and it seems to work (however power consumption will go up) after rebooting the machine: reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0007e066 Undo:reg delete HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Processor /v Capabilities /f However this cannot be the solution. I've purchased a Dell XPS 13 9360 and I've had problems with the video flickering.  It happens about every 5-10 minutes for about 5 seconds.
I've spent probably 30-40 hours trying to resolve the issue and I'm pretty fed up with it over the last 2-3 months.  I didn't notice it enough to decide ultimately to get my money back but it is too late.

I've run the diagnostic tool, and it apparently failed.  A technician was sent to my house to replace a part of the computer not related to video, and the part was refurbished.  I declined opening the device up and wanted to get my money back.  Apparently this test always fails unless the computer is plugged in apparently.  I found this out after the technician left...good I didn't let him replace a non-related part!
I've realized my 30 day return window has passed.  Gulp! That's after spending a few hours here and there trying to resolve the issue. Now I have a machine with an issue that is going to take plenty of hours to diagnose.
I've updated the BIOS, updated the Video drivers, to no avail.  I've now engaged Dell Chat support, who has stepped me through the entire process of doing this all over again.
At this point, I've asked for an escalation.  Normally this has been easy in the past, but I'm being forced to step through a repeat of the troubleshooting process which I've already accomplished

Basically, XPS 13 9360 QHD, has this issue when in a dimly light room, the brightness will be automatically set to the max, and won't be changed by either bios settings (you can adjust brightness level there for battery/AC), latest driver settings, or by keyboard keys.

It'd work normally, but then it'd start going bonkers, but then it'd go back to functioning normal.
Or just stay at max brightness.
I tried disabling DBC, installing latest graphics driver from Dell website, or Intel website using this method, installing latest bios, and other recommended drivers, disabling sensor monitoring service in "services.msc", didn't help.

Hi everyone,
Windows 10 updated itself to the Creators Update this week and I notice that my Fingerprint Senor will not work after sleep mode.
When I check the Device Manager it disappeared from device manager and if I choose the show hidden device it says the Synaptics VFS7552 Touch Fingerprint Sensor is disconnected.

I have updated the latest driver from Dell webpage and problem is persists. The only way to "fix" it is to reboot the Laptop and the Fingerprint Sensor will work but when it goes to sleep it will disconnect itself again.

Do anyone know how to fix this issue?
Thanks.

Regards,
Derek Tang

I have the Dell XPS 13 9360 and have been using the Dell USB type-C adapter to connect to wired Ethernet network. I have a problem when waking up the laptop from suspend. VGA and USB on the adapter continue to work well after wake from suspend but the Wired Network functionality of the adapter is not recognized.
Note that if I unplug and replug the adapter it is recognised correctly.
The adapter is using the driver r8152 for wired networking, I am using Linux Mint 18.1 (Ubuntu 16.04 based) and kernel 4.8.0.34
Besides this I think almost everything works perfect with the laptop
I am also attaching the content of dmesg after I wake up from sleep:

I just bought this laptop 4 days ago. Recently, i was facing a faint coil whining sound which is annoying when you started to notice its presence. Does anyone has any idea on fixing this issue? Thank you in advance!

I got a Dell Dimension 2400 which I use as my bedroom Windows XP machine for when I need to run programs that do not support Vista or later.  Whenever I turn off the computer after using it, the power supply makes a whining noise.  It does not make any noises when the computer is turned off after plugging it in, or when it is running (Except for the fan as it should be on). I replaced the power supply with a power supply that had the same part number: K0564. The seller on eBay said it is brand-new. Though I am suspicious because it had dust in the fan when I got the power supply. My question is, does anyone else who has or had a Dell Dimension 2400 that made these whining noises? Or is it that both power supplies are failing?

I have a Dell Optiplex 790 USFF with a odd problem. So one day I turned it on and it starts to whine, but not a steady whine, it kinda goes up and down, and all the front panel lights are orange. I unplugged and plugged it back in and boots to the Dell boots screen. But right when it finishes, it does that whine and light thing again. F.Y.I, this is not my computer, I just need info to fix it.

I have had a Vostro 1400 with a C2D cpu for about 1.75 years now and just today I started to get a high pitched whine from the back left (right where the fan is).

I've tried using compressed air to clear out the fan, no luck. The Whine is from the back left right at the air vent. (Vostro 1400)

I disabled popup and popdown, disabled c4, tried HLT.. no luck anywhere. Whine is not just in Windows, as soon as cpu starts the Whine starts. Thoughts?

Vistra froze thanks to RMclock, but when I restarted I noticed the Whine did not begin until I chose Boot Windows Normally, b4 that nothing.. Whine was almost immediate after

So there are couple of problems i am experiencing:
1) slow start up
2) when i pauze a video and hit play again, there is a 2-3 second lag of no audio
3) slow SSD benchmark
I recently posted a topic about the slow SSD and i already bought a new dell since then. This time however its an i7 instead of i5 and its also a different brand of hard drive.. Yet i am experiencing the same problem.. so this cant be hardware related then right.
And can all these problems have to do with the same issue? something that makes the SSD perform poorly?

4) simultaneous use of ,microphone and keyboard/mouse doesnt work??
its not normal right? that so many things are wrong?

Hi there,
I've recently purchased a dell xps 13 9360
I have had a few issues such as screen flicker every so often, maybe twice a day, however it doesn't affect me too much.
There was also slight coil whine, especially when using skype and intensive task, however I managed to remove that by turning off turbo boost in bios.
Just then the blue screen "your pc has run into a problem and needs to restart" and a very loud noise occured.  I have attached the event log for when this occured, not sure if it helps.
I've only had the laptop for just less than a month and I really need it now so I can't and don't plan on returning it. Just wondering if anyone could suggest to me what to do, i.e. could I send it for maintenance in a few weeks time and they could thoroughly test the system?

A:Dell xps 13 9360 issues

I'd suggest you first run the diagnostic tool to check hardware on the system by following the steps below:
1. Power off system
2. Power on system, quickly tap the F12 key continuously until you see Preparing one time boot menu in the top right corner of the screen. In the boot menu, stroll down to Diagnostic and then click it. After quick tests, click on Hard Drive, and then Thorough Test Mode. Report back any error code.
