Mitigating Speculative Store Bypass on Windows 2012 and 2012 R2

Q: Mitigating Speculative Store Bypass on Windows 2012 and 2012 R2

On the page
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4072698/windows-server-guidance-to-protect-against-the-speculative-execution-s we can see that the section
Manage Speculative Store Bypass and mitigations around Spectre Variant 2 and Meltdown
applies to Windows Server 2016 Version 1803 (Server Core), Windows Server 2016 Version 1709 (Server Core), Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
Can you please tell us if this is just a typo and if setting the FeatureSettingsOverride
registry key to 8 enables mitigations for Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2?
In case that's not a typo, can you explain how to protect Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2 against Speculative Store Bypass (CVE-2018-3639)?
Thanks

Preferred Solution: Mitigating Speculative Store Bypass on Windows 2012 and 2012 R2

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Today, Google Project Zero published details of a class of vulnerabilities which can be exploited by speculative execution side-channel attacks. These techniques can be used via JavaScript code running in the browser, which may allow attackers to gain access to memory in the attacker?s process.

Microsoft has issued security updates (KB4056890) with mitigations for this class of attacks. As part of these updates, we are making changes to the behavior of supported versions of Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 to mitigate the ability to successfully read memory through this new class of side-channel attacks.

Initially, we are removing support for SharedArrayBuffer from Microsoft Edge (originally introduced in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update), and reducing the resolution of performance.now() in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer from 5 microseconds to 20 microseconds, with variable jitter of up to an additional 20 microseconds. These two changes substantially increase the difficulty of successfully inferring the content of the CPU cache from a browser process.

We will continue to evaluate the impact of the CPU vulnerabilities published today, and introduce additional mitigations accordingly in future servicing releases. We will re-evaluate SharedArrayBuffer for a future release once we are confident it cannot be used as part of a successful attack.

Any Thought's on LiveBoot 2012, WinSuite 2012 and PowerSuite Golden ?

PowerSuite Golden contains both LiveBoot and WinSuite.

Thanks.

A:Thought's on LiveBoot 2012, WinSuite 2012 and PowerSuite Golden ?

WinSuite is totally absolutely utterly useless, Windows 7 does not need any optimizers. Generally you get more troubles with these "wonderful" toys.

LiveBoot is IMO useless because when you have your install media and a recovery disk created, that's all you need to recover your system or in worst case scenario access the HD to recover your files.

Hi
I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system? Please help.

A:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

Hiya! I recently contracted serious compu-flu-like syptoms!! While watching a live streaming sports event (Flyers hockey is addicting!), I seem to have been inadvertantly infected with an insidious virus! Amidst the glory of sports viewing, suddenly my browser auto-closed and a dreaded "Fake" Security (XP Security 2012) virus began it's nasty habit of lying to me. Having run across similar infections in the past, I attempted to isolate it's processes via Task Manager & then hit it with a regularly updated Malwarebytes scan. At the conclusion of the scan, Malwarebytes required rebooting the machine. Alas, though this seemed successful, I quickly realized that this version was more robust than the prior offenders I had managed to effectively deal with. On top of not removing the infection, I now additionally had Security Sphere 2012 chiming in with it's fake warnings along with the original culprit! Gettting more agressive, I atacked the issue from Safe Mode, rerunning the Malwarebytes scan & double checking some of the more obvious registry locations for issues. This initially seemed to do the trick! I rebooted normally and things looked ok....IE came up with no problem....but then I noticed my free version of AVG was not running? As I investigated this issue, I quickly realized that all of my .exe files (excepting Firefox & IE) were no longer functioning, apparently due to unknwown file extension issues. As I attem... I have windows XP media center edition SP3. I've gotten the Windows Security 2012 virus and did a few of the things suggested on tech boards. Running the Rkill and some other program so that I could run malwarebytes. That fixed my problem to a degree so I decided to run an Avast boot scan and I got rid of 89 infected files. Now I can't seem to connect to the internet. It says it is searching for an IP address. My other computers connect fine with no problem. I'd like to know if I still have the virus (which I know I probably do) and how I can fix my other problem as well. Thank you so much! Another note, I tried to do the Kaspersky boot scan with the virus boot USB disk. I can't get into my BIOS settings to change it so it boots from a USB drive. My laptop screen is busted and the monitor won't kick on until windows loads up so it is impossible for me to see what I'm doing to change it.

What version of server 2012 do you have? Also what client operating systems do you have? Windows 7 Home premium, professional, ultimate?

This can affect what services you can offer to clients.

A:Help with WIndows Essentials 2012

A refresh would be your easiest option. Remember that a refresh will remove any installed apps that were not pre-installed on the system and your data files will land in C:\Windows.old. Since that's the case, I like to suggest that afterwards, you install the apps you life, then create a new image using the "recimg" command line tool. That way your "refresh" will refresh with your apps installed and data intact.

Hello 8forums,

Really great forum here and I'm glad to join. If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Okay now here's my problem. I'm currently trying to setup Windows Server 2012 for my dad. The main thing it will be used for is storage of movies, photos and backing up Excel documents for work. This is a copy a friend burned him onto a disk and is currently NOT activated. He wanted to check it out before purchasing the license. I have installed it onto an old HP Pavilion a1640n and everything went fine with installation but, now that it is installed I cannot connect his Win8 computer to it. I have Googled this and found a method but, it doesn't work. I'm told to open a browser and enter in the address bar " HTTP://Server-name/connect " (Server-name replaced with then name of his server) and I should get a connector software download page. I do not get this software download page I just get a server not found page. I have tried entering other possibilities into the address bar, too (192.168.0.xxx/connect, adding .com etc.) nothing works. If I can get any help with this it would be appreciated.

I have tried:

Completely reinstalled Windows Server 2012
Reinstalled Ethernet drivers on the WS2012 box

Things they may be causing the problem:

As I said the Windows Server 2012 is not activated.
The WS2012 box is stuck on public network type and the W8 box is stuck on private network type.

Good evening. I just created my account in bleepingcomputer in the chance some one out there can give me some assistance in this situation.

I normally use firefox for web browsing, but today decided to open a youtube video with IE V7.0.5730.11 (outdated I know). I downloaded 1 video and was surprised by the short time it took (a 9 minute video took only about 10 seconds - first time this happens). When I opened the video, I noticed it had downloaded an advert instead (some shampoo ad, I think) and the IE browser went blank while I received a warning window stating that "windows Antivirus 2012 had detected" something and was going to run a series of high speed scans. I did not click "OK" as I knew that this was some deceiving malware message.
I looked up "windows antivirus 2012" (through firefox) and came up with links to this website and to the combofix tool. I downloaded and installed the tool, allowed it to install windows recovery console, let it run the scans and produced the report I'm attaching below.
I let the scanning process run while I was not in front of the computer, as I am at work and had some other stuff to do other than fixing my laptop. When I returned about 20 minutes later, the scan had ended and the report was displayed automatically.

I run avast antivirus and performed a quick scan before installing combofix. The scan detected an infected file with the path C:\program files\daemon tools searchbar\search... Read more

Is it safe to install Windows Essentials 2012 on a Windows 10 Surface Pro 3? Photo Gallery is what I am really after because it has a photo resize function where W10 Photo app does not.

A:Windows Essentials 2012

I see no reason why you cannot.
MS is still supporting Windows Essentials.

I don't have a Surface Pro, but I have been using Windows Essentials 2012 programs on my 2 laptops running Win 10.

Why did you use the word" safe" ?
You have heard of warning of that kind ?

Hello, one of my family member's computers recently got infected, and I need to fix it.

First off, we tried running Avast! Antivirus, which was apparently never set up correctly (probably the reason we got infected in the first place). After trying to register it and update the virus definitions and the program, it can't do so.

So, I've been following the steps on BleepingComputer to remove the Win7 Security 2012 virus/trojan.

After applying the registry fix supplied on the page, I am now successfully able to run some required programs. These include iExplore and rkill to kill the virus processes.

After doing so, I tried to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. After trying to run a Full Scan, the program froze, and it seems that the rest of the computer did, as well. I had to hard reset the computer.

The same result after multiple tries.

So, after thinking of posting it here, I tried to run DDS (not Gmer, because the laptop is 64-bit Win7). That didn't work- cmd didn't seem to actually run the scan, although the window opened.

I then took it back into my own hands and tried to install MSE from Chrome. MSE wouldn't install, so I decided to get the installer from the Lifehacker Ninite package.

Doing so allowed the antivirus to install, so I tried to update the virus definitions. Success.

I then ran a full scan, and it's running right now.

I have no logs to provide because I am unable to produce them, even with the virus processes killed (it actually see... Read more

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan/rootkit.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please refer to Microsoft's Online Safety article for tips on creating a strong password.

I got infected with this virus and some other trojans, I ran a few bootable antivirus CDs and they manage to clean up 13 infecions which I do not recall but the Windows 7 Security 2012 which it was deleted from the system, the file rik.exe which every time loaded into memory executes itself. I am sure it is not there anymore, nevertheless has left my pc inoperable, since all executables are not loading, instead opens up a screen asking me how I want to open this file with and give 2 options, media center and windows media player. A colleague told me to run combofix but I do not know how to do it since it is not running any EXE file, besides according to this forum I should not run it unless told by the helper here.
This is happening with my desktop pc, with the notebook which I am using to write this message is very slow and it does not allow me to see the files loaded in task manager by doing CRTL+ALT+DEL, all I can see are the apps running but not the tabs to go to services, users, performance and so on.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I've been having some issues trying to delete the WinSec 2012 virus. The first time I simply tried deleting the local file by using Go To Process and Open File Location in the Task Manager. It stopped it for a time, but obviously wasn't enough. It then tried to screw up my registry, so when I opened programs, it would ask me how to open the .exe. For some, you could just open the .exe with itself and it would work, so I ran CCleaner to clean up the registry, and that solved that problem.

However, it was still there, so I performed a System Restore to 12/22, which is right before it started. I just completed a full system scan with Avast! as well as Spybot S&D, and uninstalled the programs you requested us to in the pinned topic.

The appropriate files are attached. Note: I uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials right after I created the DDS files, so only Avast! is my only anti-virus now.

I went to visit a forum that was completely safe, but then my browser closed and a message popped up saying "Windows Secure Kit 2012 will now scan your computer" blah blah blah. Knowing from previous experience, I instantly knew that this was some bogus anti-virus program. So I disconnected from my internet connection, closed the window and as soon as the browser window that opened on closing the message appeared, I shut it down before anything even appeared on it.

So I ran a quick scan with MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and it seems I'm ok, but am I safe? I disconnected from the internet before clicking anything on the message, because I knew that if I clicked without doing so it would download the virus to my PC.

A:Windows Secure Kit 2012

Congrats
You did the right thing. In addition never, never, but never click on the upper right X to close. Those jerks writing those virus, etc, know, that is what most will do. Even disconnecting from the net, the virus may be there already. Use task manager to close out the window.
That being said, the most that you can do at this point is to use several quality anti virus/malware scans. Try malwarebytes, my favorite and eset online (no download required) In addition scan with your anti virus and an online free one, like House Call my Favorite
HouseCall - Free Online Virus Scan - Trend Micro USA
If all are negative, wait a week, scan again, to see if the virus that you may have caught was new and no definition was included with your tests. If negative at that point just enjoy.
For the future, you may want to use your favorite anti virus for real time protection (I like Microsoft Security Essentials), malwarebytes for a weekly scan and then download Winpatrol it is a pseudo anti virus and informs when when anything is downloaded, its up to you to decided if wanted or not. It have many other great beneifits, too.

Hello, I am a computer tech at my local computer shop, where we have been seeing numerous cases of the Windows XP Security 2012 virus.

I've been doing days and days of research for a 'proper' removal method so I do not lose the DHCP and ICS services; which result in the loss of internet connectivity.

I am currently sitting with a clone of the original hard drive(had to clone and reinstall the system; client was getting antsy), but we have an exact replicate of the system that I have been booting the clone on, removing the virus and losing either the DHCP service and/or the ICS(Windows Firewall) service then having to clone back the drive to try an alternate method.

The clone i am sitting with is a clone i made after i ran OTL(stupid on my side to clone after i removed some of the virus >.<) so i do not get the xp security 2012 prompts anymore, just have the infected files BUT i do STILL have connectivity; up until i remove these infected files.

I did need to run a exe.reg input before i can fully execute any .exe files since the virus attacks the .exe extension.

Methods I've tried:
1) Combofix - results in loss of connectivity
2) Malwarebytes - after removing infections results in loss of connectivity
3) OTL - OTL is my favored method thus far, it removes the prompts for XP Security 2012 but there are still left over files/drivers infected that TDS picks up however if you remove those infections with TDS you lose connectivity
4) TDS - results in loss ... Read more

My system is Windows 7 Professional SP1, 64-bit. It has all the recent Windows / Office updates with the last update on 5/10/2012.

Twice this week, my wife tells me that she is getting a strange popup for Windows Antivirus 2012. The first time, I walk in and find the computer with an Internet Explorer 9 browser window open with "Windows Antivirus 2012" supposedly running a scan in it. I instantly kill the process. She tells me that she opened her email (Mozilla Thunderbird 5.0) and clicked an open tab (she uses the email a lot and just leaves it open so she can quickly use the link in it) that has a legitimate link in it that takes you to a www.ustream.tv (I edited this from Ustream.com, which was wrong) site with eagles on it. She uses the link all the time; so, I doubt the email is infected. In fact, it is an email that she composed that is saved in her Sent folder. As soon as clicking the open tab (just clicking the tab, NOT clicking the link in the tab), a popup came up saying the computer is infected. She clicked OK; and, that is when the browser window opened with "Windows Antivirus 2012". The second time, she stopped when the first popup displays. I checked the running processes and again Internet Explorer was running. I killed the IE processes.

Now, this doesn't happen every time she uses the email tab. She probably has used it a dozen times this week, and only twice did the problem crop up.

So, I do some investigating. I first ... Read more

Hello. About 2 hours ago, I was infected with the Windows 7 Antispyware 2012 virus. Now, I have been infected before by a similar virus, so I was quick to react to the situation. I google'd a quick removal guide and found one on this website. I downloaded the required files, which were FixNCR.reg and RKill.exe and continued the removal process. After RKill.exe ended its search for any malicious software that were currently running(not really sure how to explain this), the guide informed me to install MalwareBytes, which I already had installed before, and run a full scan. I did. Nothing was found. I was very perplexed by this. The guide informed me that MalwareBytes should have certainly found the virus and removed it from my system. I ran a quick scan as well as a full scan. Still nothing. So, I decided to download and install SuperAntispyware Free edition. However, it also found nothing besides some cookies. Like I had said before, I had been infected by a similar virus in the past and used Malwarebytes to successfully remove the virus. My question is, is the virus gone? Is it still wandering in the vast memories of my system? If so, please assist me in the removal of this horrendous virus. It is currently bedtime for me, as it is quite late, so please forgive me if I do not reply until tomorrow morning. Once again, thank you for your time and effort.
