Very faint LCD display

Q: Very faint LCD display

I have a Dell Inspiron M4050 that had a cracked screen. I have replaced the screen with a second hand one.
However the display is very faint and barely readable.
I have searched online and found that this is either an issue with the screen or the inverter.
I cannot find an inverter on this model.
Am I right in assuming that it's attached to the rear of the screen?

Thanks very much.

Preferred Solution: Very faint LCD display

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I run a dual monitor setup with two 19" widescreen LCD's. This morning my primary monitor wasn't turning on. After some messing with the cord I got it to turn on. Later on it did it again, but I couldn't get it back on. I ruled out the cord by using a different one, something happened to the monitor itself. At first I thought the screen went out itself, but I managed to set both monitors up as clones and there's a very faint image on it still. I can see the things I'm doing on it, but just barely. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Dear mods, I have noted a faint white dash (about 3 inches) in the middle of my P51 Screen which appeared a couple of days back. It looks somewhat like a stuck/dead pixel case. As possible solutions, I have tried the following : i. Battery Drain for 30 mins, and re-checkii. Disable/Enable the Graphic Card Provided that there are no easy solutions, I wish to know whether the replacement of screen of my product (which is still under warranty) will be covered or not? Regards,B.

Hi there.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 and the display is very faint. But you can just about see it if you shine a tourch on it.
I replaced the inverter with a new one, but that did not cure it.
It feeds to an external monitor perfectly, and doing this I have reinstalled Windows xp pro with no problems.
So I presume the laptop is working correctly, and the screen is not damaged, as everything functions as it should, apart from the display.
Any ideas or help would be really great, as other than using it permanantly linked to an external monitor, (bit of a problem with portability...lol), it is a great laptop.
Many thanks in advance.

The test you did with the torch would indicate the backlight has blown. It's a tricky job to replace it so if you are not confortable taking it apart I would get a (recommended) professional.

And, yes it is a great laptop, I have the exact same model.

Have a Hp ZT1175 lap top about 5 yrs old, used in car alot month ago display would go blank, reboot ok for a while now very faint, Lcd bad? maybe interconnection between body and Lcd at hinge? any ideas

A:Lap Top Lcd Faint

I have that same model laptop. I did have a problem with the cable thru the hinge, but it presented itself as blank screen (no backlight).

Check the f7/f8 keys which control screen brightness. See if the setting is less than MAX right now.

If you are using the laptop in sunlight....it is not great

Hello everyone, I'll get straight to the point. I have Windows 7 64 bit installed on my PC. I installed GTA 5 on my PC. It started crashing, I checked the event log yesterday for the cause of the issue. It stated that GTA 5 had problems with "KernelBase.dll" and "Kernel32.dll". So I moved those files to the desktop (NOT DELETED). So when I finished playing GTA 5 I moved those files back to the "System32" folder. But today when I was playing GTA 5, I got a blue screen of death, and the system tried to restart. It said

"Boot Manager:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3.Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."

I shouldn't have to insert the disk considering I have the files in the desktop. Is there any other way to do it without the disk, because I installed Windows 7 from a disk that my friend gave me and I had to return it to him, plus my CD/DVD drive sometimes has problems reading disks. Please help me, I'm so scared right now.

A:Please help me or I'll faint!

Perhaps you can use a Live Linux distro, and copy from that. Linux Mint MATE is a popular distro, you can download the ISO and burn to CD/DVD or make a bootable USB flash drive using Rufus. When you boot with it, make sure you TRY and not install. Once on desktop, copy paste the files back into original places.

Also, do you have windows 7 64 bit repair disk? Repair CD - System Repair Disk
You could perhaps copy them back in command prompt.

A:Faint font on webpages

Unless its hard coded as an image, use View - Text Size to increase the size, or if you have a wheel mouse hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard while you scroll the wheel. That may increase/decrease the font size.

It varies between internet browsers however and I am only making an assumption you use Internet Explorer and Windows. It always pays to mention the Windows version and what application name and version when asking a question, or the advice given can be in error.

Hi all,

My friend has a Dell P780 flat panel CRT monitor... and there are two faint, black lines appearing horizontally across his screen. The lines go all the way across the screen. The first line is 1/3rd of the way down from the top, and the second line is 1/3rd of the way up from the bottom. What are these lines? Are they dead scan areas or something?

Thanks for the help.

I'm looking at a Samsung 151V 15" LCD. I've plugged it into 3 computers now to make sure it's the monitor and not the card or such. The picture is there, but it is very, very faint. Lot's of straining to make it out. It flashes normal for half a second at start up and I can shine a flash light on it and see the screen. I have tried adjusting the various settings which is very difficult as you can't really see what you're doing at all. (the flashlight makes it a little easier) Any ideas on what the problem might be?

A:Solved: Monitor very faint

The backlight or the invertor is gone.

Its cheaper to get a new one then to have someone fix it for you. You can find 17" LCD's for around a $100.

i need sound recorder to record conversations i have through skype.
the recorder is very faint when recording and i can hardly hear it on play-back.
I made sure the windows sound volume is as high as it can be --- which in all honesty it could be set somewhat higher as well --- but i dont know what else to do

Is the recorder registered at a certain sound level somewhere in the registry ( and this goes for the normal windows sound volume as well) and if so, how can i set it higher? or what can i do, considering i am not particularly geeky.

I used to use Polderbits sound recorder/editor but theyve gone out of business and i cant port Polderbits to my new laptop, boo hoo.

suggestions welcome, karaman

With Win 8, here are two things that I have trouble seeing (XP was fine).

(a) Scrollbars. I have to move my head around to see the scrollbar - especially if it's small (as in a large Word doc).

The dark grey that appears on mouseover would be fine if it was permanent.

(b) If a child window is active, I can see it OK. If it's inactive, it blends into the parent so that there is actually no way to determine where the intervening border is.

A:I have trouble seeing the faint colours

High Contrast mode might help.

I recently built a new computer and I have a slight repetitive popping/cracking over my computer speakers when sound is played. It happens on both the front and back audio jacks with speakers or my headphones.
My system specs are....
CPU: 3.3ghz intel i5
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD65
GPU: Radeon HD 6950
OS: Windows 7 64 bit

The only other weird thing my computer does is my usb wifi mouse wont work without randomly being really laggy but it works fine on other computers.

Also I have a 2nd hdd with ubuntu on it and when I boot to that drive the popping sound goes away (so must be windows/driver related?).
Ive tried the drivers on the cd that came with my mobo, and I've also update to latest version online.

Sound on my laptop (Fosa PentiumM 1.6, 1GB Ram, 60GB HD, WinXPsp2) seemed to die a few days ago and I couldn't get it working again. When I plugged in headphones and cranked the volume slider up, I could hear a VERY faint sound being played.
From the actual laptop speakers, I hear nothing, although it could be so faint that it doesn't register - my built in speakers are pretty lousy.

After alot of troubleshooting, I reinstalled Windows and then the driver disk that came with the laptop. I'm still having the same problem.

This laptop I got second hand from someone else and I doubt they would have ever used headphones with it. And since that is when it seemed to happen, I'm wondering if that has something to do with it.

I'm just not sure where to go at this point.

Thanks for any insight!

Last year in January (09) I built a pc with an 850w PSU (ThermalTake / Toughpower / 850-Watt). By around November it started making a crackling noise, so I got in touch with the RMA department and they replaced it in about 2 weeks. I installed the new one and its nearly October now and I have a few questions..

First off, I thought I heard buzzing sounds, but it was more than likely the fan of my GPU, the CPU fan or the case fans so I dismissed them. But I got more curious so I powered the the unit with the case open and I heard very faint buzzing coming from the power supply. I've read that the PSU is never really "off," unless the power cord is taken off, or unless the PSU is actually switched off.. Is that true?

Also is the very faint buzzing normal when the unit is turned off? I read it could be the capacitors and it could be normal, but since I'm not an electrical engineer, I thought it was worth asking..

When my laptop finishes playing a sound or music, it sometimes makes a feedback noise that lasts forever until interrupted by another sound. It's barely audible but still very annoying. This is probably not an OS issue, since this problem was present in both XP Home 32bit SP3 and 7 Pro 64bit. But it wouldn't hurt to ask here anyway.

What I've tried so far:
-Sound driver update
-Used both earphones and speakers to confirm the noise is not coming from hardware.
-Muted all input/output volumes except the speakers.

A:Realtek - faint beep

Since the issue has carried over from another OS, I bet that a bios update will it.

I have faint banding across the screen. It only shows up once into windows(Does not appear in BIOS at all... at least that i can tell) and shows across ALL applications. It only is really noticable on darker images like grays but not so much on black. The bands are of altrenating thickness (Small/Large Small/Large), but are not very wide at all. Thin little bands spaced out and altrenating like i said. They do not move, though if i bring up an image or a dialog box, it will create the same banding acorss those windows and stay with that window/dialog while the ones normally there pass over it.

This not a query but a possible solution to the subject matter.( I am probably in the wrong area and some kind moderator will move it).
I have had that problem to no avail, but with some spare time I tried Control Panel <Display>. Not too successful. And other stuff too.
The on the Desktop I right clicked and selected Intel <Graphic Properties> and adjusted the Contrast a modicum. Use your eyes to tell when to stop. I also grabbed the page so as to show the desktop (Win std view) made the bright area darker by about 5, up from 50.
Roaming various sites and pages appears to have improved it for me.

I recently purchased the Dell xps 8700 and I have an older set of Polk Audio Speakers that worked just fine on the Dell Dimension 4400 as well as if I plug them into a small cd player but when plugged into this computer the audio is barely there and I have checked to make sure that it is set all the way up (yet I did not have to do that with the Dimension 4400).  I have run the PC Diagnostics and I can barely hear anything out of the speakers then either.   I have checked the connections and have the jack plugged into the lime green port (2 rows of 3 audio connections and it is plugged into the center / green port that is located on the bottom row)
Can someone please tell me why I can barely hear anything when the speakers are plugged into that port?  I tried running the Diagnostics using all of the other ports and the only port that I get anything at all out of is that lime green port.
As I said, I know that the speakers are working since they were working just fine on the Dell Dimension 4400 and in an small portable cd player.
I was going to go out and purchase another set of speakers but since the speakers work in other devices  I honestly don't think that is the issue.  Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

This is a long story. I make it quick and to the point.

I have a IBM Thinkcentre E50 (9215) with XP PRO and I got hit hard by a major virus and it ate windows. It did so much damage I could not save it. Not a big problem I was going to use the IBM restore and bring it back to new, well the virus ate that partition. So now I am stuck with nothing. I have a copy of Windows XP PRO that I bought. I went to install it and nothing but issues.

Everytime I true and do a new install I have it format the partition and do the install. The setup does it job but it cant find certain files. It like doesnt see them, I even checked and yes they are there. I can never finish cuz a ton of the files are gone, and at the end I get a blue screen of death.

So I went to the next step. I took the drive out and went to my sons older machine and replace his hard drive and did again a new install using my XP PRO cd. PERFECTO it worked great. I shut down and restart several times. Looks great. I pull the hard drive out and ran to my machine and poped it in and guess what. Doesnt work. I get this error.

"Cant find or curropted file: hal.dll"

So I do some research and do all that jazz with the bootcfg commands. Restart and same error

If I try going in the boot menu I get this error...

"Load needed DLLs for kernal"

and windows will not load. I went back to my XP PRO cd and tried to repair. Again the darn thing misses certain files. (alot of them)

Hi all,

I replaced an LCD monitor recently because it would have these faint horizontal images that would occur anytime a window was open. The faint lines would be a continuation of the top and bottom of the open window(s), continuing across each side of the screen. It was an old monitor so after a cursory look at settings, I just replaced w/ a new one. However, now the new one does it! I changed refresh rates, resolution and tried to update the driver all to no avail. Has anyone come across this problem before?

A:Speakers very faint, even when volume is turned up all the way

H,mmm did you check the volume control on both the speakers and in the software? One or the other could be set to minimum. Cycle the volume control pot full down to full up on the speaker, maybe a dead spot in the pot. It can happen. Also you might have it full down and you think it is full up. Turn speakers On / Off. Remove and replug the speaker jack in the computer, making sure it is fully seated. Try a different software program to play via the speakers.

If all else fails try a second pair of speakers. That will allow you to isolate the problem to the speakers or in the computer.

Lenovo R60 converted to W7. everything works fine except sound from the microphone.
If I speak normally into the mic from a distance of 3 inches the resulting recording is very quiet - only just audible. There is a certain amount of buzz as well

The microphone works fine in another machine.

The R60 has Soundmax Integrated Digital HD Audio. I have the latest drivers (W7 drivers are only available for the R61 but I believe the card is the same. They work at least as well as the R60 vista drivers).

In sound->recording I have one microphone (a CD player and Stereo Mix are visible but disabled)
Under microphone->properties I have
Tab Listen - unticked
Tab Custom -> microphone boost ticked
Tab Levels -> set to max (100)
Tab Microphone enhancements -> disabled (Ive tried voice enhancements but it makes marginal difference)
Tab general - it says 'no jack information available' Also, if I enable and select as default one of the other recoding devices, the microphone gets a small green telephone symbol by it. So I suspect Soundmax is not detecting the mic in the jack correctly which may account for the symptoms.

So can anyone help me get this fixed.
All (sensible ) suggestions welcome

The screen on my Portege R600-11B has suddenly gone extremely dim. There's no problem with it coming back to life after hibernation - but it still coems back extremely dim. The brightness does flash up when I press the button at the top right hand corner with a sun symbol on.

I think I might need an FL Invertor? Do you know how I find out which one I need and instructions on how to fit it?

Also I've had problems with Windows 7 Professional starting up incredibly slowly. I'm assuming the two problems are not related.

Hope you can help, thanks.

I recommend connecting an external monitor.
If the picture on the external monitor would be fine, then your internal display or maybe the FL inverter needs to be replaced.
You ask how to check this?
Well, I?m afraid each part need to be checked using another good tested part.

In your case I would ask an specialist for assistance?
Is warranty valid? If yes then I would recommend to contact an Toshiba service in your country.

I recently got Call of Duty World at War and found out that the patch required users with windows vista to have to set their sound format to 16 bit 44100 Hz (studio quality) However they released another patch since then that fixed the problem so I tried to set my format back to anything on 24 bit but then I get these faint clicking sounds, like when a tape player comes to the end of the tape and you can hear it click through the head sets, it sounds like that but is faint. Also I have noticed when I get mail it will make a scratching sound.

I have no idea what is causing this, the computer came set at 24 bit 192000 Hz and I had no problems but now that I am trying to reverse back it is making all these annoying sounds.

Does anyone know what is causing this?

Sounds like you're "bleeding" at certain frequencies and/or sound levels. Is the headset mini sterio plug or USB? If its not USB you can try that and see if the noise goes away. Also check all the levels on all your sound layers; one of them might be set to max instead of mid-range, and also check each input and output port/connection in the sound properties and turn off the ones not in use.

If there's a sound card in the system, sometimes moving it to the most distant port from the other components will help. I suspect the sound was there all the time but some setting is maxed out or the drivers increased the dynamic range or something like that and now disk activity and other noisy things going on in the computer are beind picked up. I've had several computers over the years with various bleed-thru noises and usually a USB headset will clear that up.

Ok this unit has the classic symptoms of an inverter going bad when plugged into the power source, BUT when you only run the laptop on battery the screen does not blank out (go faint).

Typically when the inverter goes bad you can still see the image very faintly.
This is a DELL Inspiron 8600.

Any clues?

Have you checked the power management settings? The screen brightness may be set to a low brightness level when running from external power.

I have, for about a few weeks, been dealing with random, faint static pops that have been coming from my speakers. Another tech support forum has done nothing to help me, so I am turning here for advice. Basically here is what I know

1. It is not the speakers; If I use headphones plugged directly into the computer, the popping continues.

2. It is not the motherboard; I swapped the motherboard.

3. It is not the operating system; I did a reformat.

4. It is not the file itself; They play fine on my iPod.

I am suspecting it might be my power supply dying, but I would like confirmation on this. The pops are not very audible, but if you are paying attention to your music, they can really disrupt the flow of the song.

In an additional note in trying to describe what the pops sound like, at the beginning of this youtube video there are several clicks (part of the song) that soung almost identical to what I'm hearing, although a bit louder.

Dear All

I have bought a 21" CRT monitor on the cheap and it is great. However I did notice that against a white background, such as Word or a Google webpage, a very faint yellow colouration is visable at the top and bottom of the screen with a vertical 1cm patch in between. My questions are;

1) What causes this? Is it burned onto the screen or some form of degauss issue?

2) Is there any way of getting rid of it?

A little more info; I have a second 17" monitor next door to this one that is used intermitently for my work. There does seem to be a little distortion on the 21" when the monitor is in use. I do have a couple of speakers in the room, so magnetism may be a problem but moving them away seems to have no effect.

Thankyou for any advice you care to share.

A:Very faint image retained on CRT monitor

This sounds like a used monitor that had some static display on it for long periods. There is no way to remove it, you just have to live with it.

Distortion when another adjacent monitor is in use is not that unusual, many monitors lack the magnetic shielding to prevent that. Move them farther apart.

I have been having a really strange problem: if I listen really closely I can hear faint music coming out of my speakers / headphones connected to my speakers. It's sporadic and occasionally I can't hear it, but I usually can. I have absolutely no idea what's causing this; I scanned with the free version of Avira Antivir, Spybod S&D, and Superantispyware and I did find a couple of minor things, but after deleting them the music is still here (I'm also using Windows 7).

I recently purchased an Asus VH238H which was on sale and is LED back-lit. Shortly thereafter, I began to notice these faint vertical lines mostly down the middle of the screen, only in dark scenery. It could be in a movie or a game, or simply a dark background; point is: anything dark or black, these lines are noticeable.

I have attached a few pictures of the monitor on a black surface (although the quality is poor), in hopes someone could enlighten me as to whether I should send it back to the manufacturer or keep it. My understanding is that this may be something called "flashlighting", but I want to make sure, as I'm not one to throw money out the window.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
