Lenovo laptop 500500S-14ISK (ideapad) intel driver crashes and produces black screen

Q: Lenovo laptop 500500S-14ISK (ideapad) intel driver crashes and produces black screen

Hey everyone, My Intel HD graphics 520 driver continuously crashes and basically shuts down my computer. The power button/keys are still on, but I just get a black screen (with some light behind it), as if it is in sleep mode, and I cannot wake up my computer anymore. The only solution then is to just force it off by holding the power button and restart it. I feel it happens at random, but it seems to occur more often when I'm playing a video or something (although that may just be a coincidence). I've had this problem for a long time and have tried several times to reinstall or update the driver. Because I got so fed up with it I just disabled the driver and used the NVIDIA Geforce 920M driver, which works sort of fine with the only big disadvantages that I can't increase or reduce the brightness of my screen anymore and can't run certain programs/games properly. So, therefore, I'm still looking for a solution. Can anybody help me out?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Im playing a game which keeps telling me that the drivers need to be upgraded. So i made the test at the intel homepage. It told me that a update for the intel hd 520 graphics driver is available. I downloaded the supportool and it installed the other 2 drivers without any problems, but the installation of the graphics driver was stopped. It told me to download the driver on the manufacturers website. But there isnt any on lenovos support website. there is just a VGA driver, but im not sure if this is what i need. Ideapad 500-14ISKWindows 10 x64Intel HD Graphics 520

Hi, I bought my Ideapad 500S-14ISK on 6/2/2016.  Surprised that the new notebook can't start properly. After power on, it kept in the black screen and can't go to Windows 10. Then the notebook turned off completely. After this, the notebook can start properly again. Waiting for anyone help, thank you. 22/2/2016

A:Ideapad 500S-14ISK Black Screen after power on

Hi HK,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

I suggest you to perform the Flee-Power and try to access BIOS to reset it. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue.

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.
If the issue persists even after performing Flee Power then resetting BIOS to its defaults should resolve the issue
Now access the BIOS menu press ?F2? when the Lenovo logo appears on the screen while the computer is starting up.
Then to reset the BIOS to its defaults click on ?F9? Key and select YES.
Now Click on ?F10? Key to safe the changes that are done in BIOS, restart the computer and check if the issue is resolved.

I hope the above information helps.

Regards,
Shashi Kumar

Model: Lenovo Yoga 700-14ISKProcessor: Core i5-6200URAM: 8 GB RamHard Drive: 256 GB SSDGraphics Card: NVIDIA Geforce 940M + whatever integrated graphics card comes with this model, unsure.OS: Windows 10 Hi, I've been experiencing a problem with my Lenovo Yoga 700 laptop where the screen remains permanently black. My computer will turn on, or so it seems, but nothing appears on the screen. I've tested many potential solutions to try to fix this issue, which I'll list shortly, but unfortunately nothing I've done so far has worked. This issue first appeared this past Monday on June 18th, 2018. I happened to be using my laptop at the time, when the screen suddenly went black. As far as I can remember there was no noise when the screen went black. I tried to get the screen to come back on by increasing the brightness and pushing the screen backlight button, but neither worked. So I forced shut down my laptop by holding the power button in, and then shortly restarted it to find the screen was still black. However, when powering on the laptop the fans work, the keyboard lights come on (and I can toggle them on and off using "FN + Spacebar", tho I've discovered that after the laptop has been "on" a little while, say 5 minutes or so, the keyboard light gets stuck on and "FN + Spacebar" will no longer toggle it off), and the Power Button Light on the side of my laptop turns on. Since then I've researched the issue for Lenovo laptops, and luckily most forum topi... I have a Lenovo IdeaPad p500 laptop with a Intel HD 4000 graphics card and is running Windows 10 that has issues when attempting to connect to an old Polaroid monitor of mine. The cable used to connect them is a VGA cable, and as soon as the cable is connecting them, with the monitor on or off, my laptop's screen quickly changes to a smaller resolution (with black bars on the side of the screen), then erratically goes completely black for a second. The screen comes back, in a different resolution, and I cannot interact with anything. My laptop notifies that "Display driver Intel HD Graphics Drivers for Windows 8(R) has stopped responding and successfully recovered." If I unplug the cable from either device within 5-10 seconds of the driver first crashing, the laptop reverts to normal as if nothing had happened. If not, the laptop crashes, saying "VIDEO TDR FAILURE" and then proceeds to restart. I upgraded my laptop to Win 10 a while ago, and has since then worked with the same VGA cable and monitor and cable that I am explaining about now. I know that the cable works, and the monitor too, since they both properly function with another PC. I did not consciously update any drivers in between, but I did connect the monitor to the other PC in between. I've now tried to change the display resolution, update and change the graphics drivers to ones for windows 10, but I still get the same problem. Also, the laptop is able to connect easily and witho... Read more

hi dharamc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Have you tried checking this issue under the BIOS mode.
Power ON the computer and start hitting F2.

If the problem is visible under BIOS, then don't mind the driver as the problem might be the GPU or the LCD screen.
to isolate the issue further you can use an external monitor.

If the problem is not visible under an external monitor, then you have a problem with the GPU

Let us know your findings
Cheers!

I have a Levono 330 which device manager says has an Intel HD Graphics 5500 display and the max resolution is 1366 x 768. Not great but adequate.
I installed the Oracle VM 5 (in order to run some old DOS software) and created a virtual XP machine - that was dead easy.

Oracel VM defaulted the XO machine to a small window at 800x600. I changed the screen resolution and it allowed a maximum of 1600x1200 so whooppee, I selected 1600x1200. The screen resolution was visibly better than the 1366x768 that I had under native windows 10. So it would seem that the screen can cope with a higher resolution that 1366x768 - or am I kidding myself!?

So how do I get Windows 10 to let me set a screen resolution of 1600x1200 that I can set in the VM?
Silly boy. I just noticed that the increase dots come from increasing the size of hte screen to a point where it does not all fit on at the same time!! :-(

My kid has been using this laptop and loved it, but mentioned a while ago it was difficult to power it back on after turnned it off. However she managed to work around by putting it in hibernate/sleeping mode only, or recycling the system many times (by holding on power button to force it off). The issue was black screen (no Lenovo logo) but computer was on. I didn't pay much attention because she can still make it work, and I was too busy. Last week, there was a windows update (again) and the computer was forced recycle. It never comes back alive again. The same, computer is humming, but no any visual output on screen, just black. Tried novo button, bootable USB, external monitor, all no use. Check the warranty, just over by 2 months! Asked the service store, to fix will cost at least $200-$300 to replace the motherboard! It does not make sense when spent a bit more could buy a new notebook. But my kid liked it and it does not make sense to throw it away either, when it still looks pretty new and only being used very lightly (schoolwork only). It is sad, especially the brand has been gainning my trust. I probably don't expect a "good" solution either from Lenovo or community, but just throw my frustration here (only because have just registered the account and there is no support email or web form). If Lenovo want to make customer happy, the part shouldn't be so expensive for a short-lived laptop! Just by the way, there are many posts about Ideapad's black screen i... Read more

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of all the problems.  Here are a couple of things to try........

First, try a reset of the BIOS.  The procedure can be useful in resolving some hardware conflicts which your computer may have.  Just do this......

1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 3. Plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If you are comfortable working inside your laptop. try this........

Try the reset again with the battery removed.

If the reset didn't resolve the problem then you may have a failed piece of hardware preventing the bootup. Remove the battery, hard drive, optical drive, memory, wireless card and bluetooth if it is installed. Now try to power up the stripped laptop. With all the hardware removed you should have lights come on and it may possibly beep since there is no memory installed. If the laptop is showing signs of life start adding hardware one piece at a time starting with a memory module and boot up the laptop. If it doesn't power up try the memory in the other slot. Also try the other memory module separately in both slots if two are available. If it is still showing signs of life add another piece and boot. Do this for each item until it doesn't power up again. The last piece of hardware installed is your problem part.

Hello,  I've got a problem with my newly bougt Lenovo Ideapad 500 14ISK. It randomly displays signs of shutting off/overheating. The screen turns black (not off but just like its not receiving signal) an de audio stops working. Only solution is to force shut off the laptop and restart.  I bought the new laptop two monts ago. Of those two months i'vo only had the chance to work on it for a few weeks due to this problem. I've read the forums when the first problems started acting up.  I've installen the new intel drivers, did a bios update, did a full system sofware and hardware check, and obviously found no problems. After giving up and returning it to the store, they said it should be a hardware issue, if the laptop just radomly shutts of (like overheating). It took them three weeks to send my laptop back.  Once i got it back, i read the reppair report, and guess what? they didn't found any hardware issues, so they installed a clean version of windows and did a bios update. After working on it for an hour in the universities library the laptop turned black again.  So if anyone can give me some advice that would be greatly appreciated, since the repair man of Lenovo also don't understand my problem.  Some info;doesnt matter if battery power or net power.Doesnt matter which programs i am using, it will juust randomly shut off. I did the intel upgrades listed on Lenovo's forums and the latest ones, still the same p... Hey there, Both hinges of my Ideapad 300-14ISK are now broken after 6 months of light use. The right one started to freeze after less than 2 months from the purchase date. It has resulted in breaking the LCD cover as a result as I opened or closed the lid. About a month later, the left hinge did the same. They're claiming that's why they can't help me). The Lenovo website has 2 parts for the hinges for this model but I can't understand the difference between them. First one is "5H50K14044 - HINGE L+R LIMR L300-14IBR" while the second one is "5H50K14032 - HINGE L+R L300-14IBR". I can't figure out the difference between both parts. I turned it on one day and all of a sudden the screen was jet black. Plus if I turn it off I have to hold down the power button but if I turn it on it just comes back on with 1 quick press. Whats up with that? Is it because my laptop isn't turning off all the way? I already tried the hard reset method (taking out battery, holding down power button for X seconds) and cleaning the ram stick but nothing seems to work. Do you think it might be the LCD screen?

After a bit long atualization I entered my password and my desktop turned black again.I found out I can still change the brightness and lock it. So Iocked it, used the Microsoft Hello and that one activated the McAfee LiveSafe on Firefox. If I close my browser I might not be able to open it again. I can still "minimized" firefox (When I try to minimize I'm only diminishg the window and the window automatically travels to the southwest corned of my screen as a form of a green rectangle with the simbols of dimished, its opposite and close. Again, the only things I can do now are changing my brightness "minimize" my firefox and lock my desktop. What do I do??? Edit: I can do ctrl-alt-del as well.

I bought this laptop about a week ago, and for the most part I love it. Unfortunately though, I've been experience an annoying black screen freeze for no apparent reason.  Some days the laptop will work fine for several hours and other days it'll keep turning black and freezing up for no apparenent reason every 15 or so minutes. I did open it up to add an SSD to the available slot and move the operating system to it, but I don't see how this would cause a problem, ive even been through every device in the device manager to check for driver and bios updates too. Does anyone know a solution? What even are my options if it's hardware related? processor: i7 6300hqram: 16GBgraphics: Nvidia gtx 950mos: windows 10

Brand new Ideapad, started personalising it last week. Today I get black screen on start up. It has power and seems to be running, it even accepts CDs and runs them, but screen stays black. Tried all the function keys to see if I could bring it to life, but no luck. Anyone got any ideas? Of course it is Saturday and IT support not available from Lenovo.
