Battery never charges above 10%

Q: Battery never charges above 10%

Alienware Aurora 5
My battery never charges above 10% and is at 0% or close to 0 most of the time. Desktop is always plugged in, the power supply diagnostic test passed. Originally was plugged in to a UPS/surge protector, tried plugging directly into an outlet, does not appear to have changed anything. The computer has shut down a few times even though it is plugged in - it does start right back up.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Dell laptop will charge and operate for several hours off a new 6000 MAh battery but the icon in the tray inidcates that it is always on line power. Although both the CD and floppy drive work when installed in a bay the system not indicate that they are present. I have updated the bios from Dell but that does not help. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Ever since yesterday I've had this problem, I tried several solutions and none of them worked. Basically the problem is: The laptop only works on battery now. When the battery is at 0% the laptop turns off even if the AC is plugged in. To make matters worse, when the laptop is on I get this message "plugged, not charging". So basically the AC no longer works by itself and only charges the battery when the laptop is off. Here is what I tried so far:- Changing the settings on the Lenovo Energy Mangement tool- Uninstalling the Lenovo Energy Mangement tool - Taking off the battery and AC, pushing the power button for 30 seconds, putting them back in and turning on the laptop.- Starting the laptop on safe mode- Praying to God None of these things worked. Somebody help.

I've an Inspiron 15 7560, it's just just 3 months old. The design capacity of the battery in this thing is 41,998 mWh but windows batteryreport and hwmonitor are showing a full charge capacity of 39,079 mWh. That's 7% less. But the strange thing is that batteryreport as well as hwmonitor show a charge level of 107% when the laptop is full charged. And that's not on one occasion, every full charge is shown as 107%.. The thing that's even more strange is that according to battery capacity history of powercfg batteryreport that drop in capacity happened just around the time I changed the battery charge setting from "Adaptive" to "Primarily AC Use" in Dell Power Manager Lite. What's happening here?

A:7% battery wear on new laptop but battery charges up to 107% according to batteryreport

The lowering of the threshold is what is intended.
This link will give you more information on the charge options.

For your specific case
"Primarily AC — Extends battery life by lowering the charge threshold, so that the battery never charges to 100 percent capacity. Recommended for users who primarily operate the system while plugged into an external power source."

My Dell XPS battery charges only to 99%. Technical support said this is a "normal" occurrence if you have "adaptive" charging on in the BIOS. They asked me to update the BIOS and then change it to "custom" charging. The battery now charges to 100%.
Is this normal behaviour or just a messy "fix"? I just want to confirm if this is a papered over fault, because I suspect that it is. Personally I am not too pleased with having to call Dell technical support on the day I opened my new laptop!

Hello everybody,my problem: Lenovo Y700 15 ISK with Windows 10 x64 charges the battery only to 95%. The bar at the bottom always shows "95% plugged in, charging?. I have no battery settings (maintenance mode etc.) activated, especially because I have no software to do so. As far as I know there is no such settings in Windows 10. I just bought it. Have immediately (without looking whether it loads to 95%) formatted the SSD and Installed Windows 10 and Drivers from http://support.lenovo.com/de/de/products/laptops-and-netbooks/ideapad-y-series-laptops/y700-15isk?qu...I installed only the Drivers and Lenovo Utility + Lenovo System Interface Foundation (which have no interface). I also tried to install Lenovo Companion and Lenovo settings and change battery settings such as conservation mode, etc. While it change the indicator from "charging" to "not charging" and back it still does not move over 95%. Does anyone have any advice for me? Should I return it?

I have a HP amd a8 laptop - approximately 15 months old. Over the past 3 months I have noticed that it is not charging when plugged in. I used to be able to fully charge it, unplug it and work for 2 hours plus before having to recharge it. I would then plug it back in to top up the power. 3 months ago I noticed when I was doing this it was no longer topping up the power. In fact, the red light (which normally stays on when charging) would only flash once - and then go white and stay white; draining  the remaining power very quickly. I have tried other charges but to no avail. The laptop battery will charge when the laptop is off (lid closed) and in sleep mode. The battery port does feel a little loose but I don't think this is the problem as when I take the battery out and plug the main power in the laptop will power up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Clary

Hi all, My laptop is new, i've had it for just about a month now. There's usually an orange charging light on the side of the laptop that illuminates when the charger is plugged in. However recently, whenever my laptop is on and i try to charge it, the orange light illuminates for a matter of seconds and comes up with the message "plugged in but not charging" and then the light just turns white and the laptop continually runs as if nothing is plugged in. However, when the laptop is turned off, the orange light will iluminate and will  charge to 100%. The charger is completely fine as it appears to charge the laptop when it is off. I have even purchased a new charger and that has made no difference. It appears as though it's some type of settings problem, but i have checked settings and nothing seems to be different. Any help would be appreciated, as i'd hate to have to keep switching of my laptop just so that it will charge.

I am running One Key Optimizer and have a red dot on the battery level, which I thought meant that my computer needed to be optimized. (It did, to be honest.) However, after I did the Checkup, nothing showed up as wrong, but then when I went into the Battery area, it showed that the battery should be calibrated, which I tried starting. It started, but it only charged my battery up, and not discharged it to recharge it. I have it currently on high performance setting to help drain the battery, and I have it unplugged to try and discharge the battery. I know it has to be plugged in, not allowed to sleep, or not to power down the PC, but if it won't discharge, then what's the sense of a calibration? What is wrong?

Hi

For a few days, my Tecra A5 has begun to beep and shut down (as when the battery gets low) while it was connected to the power supply AC adapter.

I finally realized that when the computer is plugged in, the battery discharges and does not use the power supply to recharge.

On the other hand, if I switch off the computer, the battery starts to recharge.
I replaced the battery a few months ago, so I think it is still OK.

Could the charger be faulty? Seems strange since it can still recharge the battery when the computer is off.

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

A:Tecra A5 - battery charges only when computer is off

> Could the charger be faulty?

Theoretically; yes? but it could be also possible that the power supply electronic on the motherboard is affected? but at first stage the AC adaptor should be checked and notebook should be tested with new, good working AC adaptor.

Whenever I have my laptop turned on and plugged into the mains now, it'll give a message saying (plugged in, not charging) after the power percentage and stay at that level without charging up. But it'll charge when I have my computer off!

It will run off the battery and charge when the computer is off so it's not the battery itself. And it'll boot up and run if I have the AC adapter plugged in with the battery removed, so it's not that either. How do I fix this?

Sorry to hear about the problems with the power. Many times when there are issues with the battery or power to the notebook, it will be one of three things: the power supply, the system board, or the battery. You might want to take a look at this document that has instructions to troubleshoot each of these.  If you follow these instructions, you might find the problem, or at least you will be eliminating them as being the issue.  But I think maybe you'll find the answer in this document, Battery Does not Power the Notebook or Hold a Charge, Thanks,

I have a HP stream x360, and it is having battery problems. First of all, it drains even when I shut it down completely. I shut it down with approximately 90% battery and about a day later it wont turn on. So I go to charge it, which leads to my second problem. It charges insanely slow. It has been plugged in for 12 hours, and when I press power, the button lights up for 5 seconds and then turns off. It isn't a kink in the wire because I store it properly, and it is unravelled when charging. It isn't the outlet because ai have moved 3 times, which means totally different outlets, but all with the same charge speed; SLOW. Finally, it is actually fully plugged into the computer because the little red light IS on, indicating it is charging. So what do I do? What is wrong? I can't take out a battery because it is internal. And currently, I cannot do anything with the computer because it is still dead, and it has a habit of taking 2 days to charge. About. Please help. I got it about 9 months ago. It isn't even a year old.

I've got a Thinkpad 600E running WindowsXP, which has performed pretty well, although the original battery (understandably) just refuses to hold a charge very long any more - although it will reliably recharge when the laptop is running on A/C.

I decided to invest in a new (genuine) IBM replacement laptop battery, which upon receipt, just wouldn't seem to go into the recharge cycle. The recharge light (lower left screen hinge) only blinks orange. Assuming "defective battery", I requested and received a return merchandise authorization, and returned the battery and requested a replacement. The replacement arrived, and the same problem.

Although not outside the realm of reasonableness, it seems improbably that two consecutive replacement laptop batteries would be defective. Under power options, the replacement battery appears to be being recognized - although just not charging (graphic shows a "circle and bar" running through the battery image).

So, clearly (at least to me),

There's nothing wrong with my A/C adapter
There's nothing wrong with my existing (old) battery
There's nothing wrong with the battery charging circuitry

Again, this is a genuine IBM laptop battery, with the exact same model as the old one and it seems to defy reason that this battery also has some sort of defect. Any suggestions on a way to "kick-start" the new battery into recharging?

Hi!

For the past couple of weeks I have been having trouble with the battery of my Satellite L50-A. It stays at 0%, even though it does charge. If I remove the power adapter, the notebook keeps working for a while. Now here comes the odd part. If the notebook has been charging for a while, it shuts down. If I remove the power adapter it will start again and still indicate it's at 0%, but now it works for about 1.5 hours before the battery is actually empty.

So I use my laptop without power until it shut down, then I charge it for a couple of hours and then it shuts down and we start all over.

Does anybody have any idea what I could do to solve this issue?

A:Satellite Pro U400-11V - Battery only charges when computer is switched off

Hi

I doubt that this has something to do with the software or operating system. In my opinion it sounds like a hardware problem because the battery will always be charged if AC/DC adaptor is plugged in. Therefore it?s not necessary to activate this setting in software configuration.

If your BIOS is already updated you should contact an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and maybe the mainboard must be replaced.

I think that there is a problem in Win10 indicator (since light indicator lights white), but even formating (and converting from Legacy to EFI) didn't solved the problem. Is there a problem with battery? EDIT: At what % does LED turns from orange to white? I checked indicator for white LED when laptop was turned off and charging. So I can't confirm if it charged to 100% and if it charges to 100% when turned on.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A5311, model PSCF6U-010056. I've had to replace the battery twice because it stops charging. It shows 0% charging. I uninstall the battery drivers and also uninstall the battery. I physically remove it from the laptop for about 5 mins, plug it back, scan for new hardware, and it charges for about 2 mins. I know that this is more than likely happening because I have to leave my laptop on 24/7 (no, I don't have a desktop anymore). My questions are:
1) Would a docking station help this? If so, any recommendations? My thought is that there would be some mechanism that would stop using the battery if the battery is at a certain percent. I'd assume you'd need to undock it monthly just to exercise the battery.
2) Would a better solution be "wake-on-LAN" (I haven't tried that yet)?

I purchased the Lenovo IdeaPad 100 in May 2016.  I am on my laptop every day for school and work related, and I tend to put my laptop to sleep instead of turning off most of the time. The battery drains fast; lasts at least an hour or less without an ac adapter.  When I charged my laptop with the ac adapter it takes at least 2 hours, 3 hours at most, for it to charge which I think it's not normal. I can't remove the battery from the laptop because I don't want to cause any damage. I do have a warranty for it, yet I like to know any solutions for me to fix this issue.

Hi guys,

I've got my uncle's Acer Aspire 5536 that I am having some trouble with. He said that the laptop just decided not to work.

When I press the power button absolutely nothing happens.
When I plug my charger in, the power button lights up blue and so does the battery light (Orange when was charging, now blue).

There is still nothing happening when I press the power button though.

I've tried taking the battery and charger out and holding the power button for a few minutes then connect the charger, to no avail!

I popped the casing above the keyboard off to make sure that the power button wasn't just stuck. All seems fine.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Great laptop that Ive been using for 1.5 years. Recently I've noticed my battery is showing signs of an error other Dell users are reporting.
Laptop charges fine to 76% then it starts alternating from "plugged in, charging" to "plugged in, not charging". Charging after 76% becomes really slow.
What I've done so far:
1. Updated BIOS
2. Updated Dells Power Management tool
3. BIOS can detect the adapter (45W). Im using the adapter that came with the laptop
4. Battery settings in power management and BIOs are set to Standard
5. Completely drained the battery and tried doing a full charge
6. Uninstalled Microsoft ACPI compliant control in device manager then re-installed
Battery diagnostics show the battery is in EXCELLENT health.
Any ideas?

In my ThinkPad W530 Power Manager settings I have choosen the option "Automatically optimize for battery lifespan" (Battery -> Battery Maintenance -> Charge Mode). Nevertheless it always charges and keeps the battery charge at 100%. Is it normal for 9-Cell extended battery?

Link to picture

But many articles and discussions here at the forum state, that actually charging to 100% is not good tor battery life (see for example this article http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Welcome-FAQs-Knowledge-Base/How-can-I-increase-battery-life-ThinkPad/ta-... ). Do I miss anything?

Thanks!

A:automatically optimize for battery lifespan charges the batt to 100% in Power Manager settings

Yes, you missed something. When you select "maximize battery lifespan," the software changes what the system sees as maximum battery capacity. In one of your screenshots, you can see that it says the remaining charge is higher than the full charge capacity. So right now, your battery is 100% charged (94 Whr). The next time you use the system on battery and then plug it in again, it will only charge up to 87 Whr. As long as you have maximum lifespan mode on, the identified full charge capacity will always be less than the battery's actual full charge capacity. Windows and Power Manager will recognize that as 100% charged, even though it's actually 92% charged. And as a result, the battery will get less wear because it's not sitting at full charge. On my year-old W530, the actual full battery capacity is now 87 Whr, and maximum lifespan mode reduces that to 77 Whr (88% of actual charge capacity). 77 Whr will show up as 100% charged unless I switch the battery mode to maximum runtime, at which point the capacity switches back to reading as 87 Whr.
