Laptop keyboard is acting crazy

Q: Laptop keyboard is acting crazy

Hi guys, my keyboard is constantly turning on and off the shift key on its own in an unpredictable manner. It makes typing extremely annoying and interferes with operating windows on my laptop.

Not sure if it's the laptop hardware itself is the issue or something else like a virus etc, because the problem is replicated using the on-screen keyboard and external keyboard as well.

I've ran an Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus scan and everything seems to be OK. Any help or advice will be highly appreciated. The laptop is a LEnovo Thinkpad E420, thanks.

Preferred Solution: Laptop keyboard is acting crazy

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Laptop keyboard is acting crazy

Could be due to sticking keys. First thing I'd suggest is to turn the computer upside down and firmly tap the underside to try dislodging debris which might be under the keys. Laptop keyboards are capable of catching lots of unwanted treasures inside.

Make sure the numlock isn`t activated.

If that doesn`t help, try another keyboard.

The problem is very similar to others reported previously but I think that the cause is different.
Sometimes when a key is pressed, a random character that does not correspond to the one I pressed is printed on the screen (it could be more than one and/or they are printed continuously) like when a liquid is spilled on the keyboard.
I have noticed that this happens specially when the laptop is left for a couple of hours without activity. Rebooting (and turning it on after some days), unplugging the battery, formatting does not work and I am pretty sure that is not a virus or liquid spilled problem.
However the problem is solved when I run a memory diagnostic with the Memtest86+ software; after one or two passes I reboot the computer and the problem is gone, but if I leave it alone for some time the problem returns.

I will appreciate any help regarding to detecting and solving the problem; if more information is needed please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

A:please help!!! - my laptop keyboard is going crazy!!!!!

You probably need to replace the keyboard - they are replaceable in most if not all all laptops. They are however not cheap and have to be order specifcally for your laptop model.

You can also buy an external PS/2 or USB keyboard and use that instead - this is the cheaper solution but maybe not the most convenient one.

So my keyboard has been fine for years but all of a sudden it started to act strange... Some key I press would have numbers with it. Like my "R" key will type out "0r" and only a few other keys are like that and my Space bar types "4"s. My number lock isnt on and I dont see any strange programs running.
If I type "R" and it comes up as "0r" I can go and delete the 0 but come on, I really cant be doing that all the time.
A virus scan showed up nothing. Im stumped. I have no clue whats wrong.

Has any one experienced this before or does anyone know how to fix this?

my laptop keys are messing up. it keeps on pressing the delete button by itself so the delete dialog box keeps showing up. it also keeps on typing period automatically. When i press the shift button, it doesn't type in the greater than sign (>) which means its probably not a problem with the hardware.

So a while ago, my sister has been using my mom's laptop to watch YouTube videos. However, some of the keys have been acting up. Here's which keys act up. "E" and "R" would often be type together as either "ER" or "RE". "B" or "N" would start a new tab. "D" and "F" would be typed together as "DF" I don't know what she caused it to act up. I thought it was liquid damage, like what happened to another laptop. But even though she spilled some liquid before, it was only miniscule and they still work after drying it up. There was a time she did something similar where she kept holding on the mute button and it doesn't respond. Maybe I have to let the keyboard exhaust "the typing energy" out. I'm not sure what exact HP laptop my mom used, since it was a refurbished one and there's no lable on the bottom, and she already tossed the box away. Here's what I can figure out. It has "Pavilion" and "B&O", it has close to 900gb,  and it's bigger than a 15 inch. Here's the closet I can find.

I bought this new laptop and now whn I type faster or put my fingers relaxed and then type quickly.. every 2 or 3 letters I try to type the cursor or jumps back 4 or 5 letters or deletes the whole or part of a word and then starts from there or the cursor ends up in another tab or table etc or the window suddenly gets minimized(it is not a virus.. it is the damn keyboard). I tried typing slowly to see if my fingers hit some other button by mistake but I don't see it .. even if it did.. what kinda button on the whole keyboard makes the cursor jump few lines back or few letters back or delete half of a word and start there. I really had to stop and type this extremely slowly like as if I was typing on a blackberry or something.. it is ****ing annoying as hell.. do I have to return this piece of crap now???

btw if you are interested it is a ACER ASPIRE AS5315-2848 LAPTOP PC(2.1GHz/1GB).

A:Laptop Keyboard driving me crazy

Is it possible that you are without realizing it, letting part of you hand touch the touch pad while you are typing? This is a fairly common thing with touch pads on laptops. I have always disabled my touchpad and used a laptop mouse on my laptops for this reason and the fact that I don't like touchpads also.

On my Dell Latitude D610 Laptop, the delete key does not work at all.
The down arrow key only works when the right arrow key is already pressed (I have to press and hold the right arrow key and then press the down arrow key simultaneously to scroll down with my keyboard)..

Anyone know why that might be happening?

Sony VAIO VGN-NR330e laptop.

I cleaned the keyboard right before installing Windows 7 on it. Now, the keyboard is acting very strange. I don't know if cleaning it messed up something sensitive and now the hardware itself is shot, or if it's a driver, or a flat out compatibility issue with Windows 7.

I tend to believe it is not the hardware itself, as when I pop off the problem keys and put them back on, they respond normally. But only to a light touch, not if you hold it depressed.

Then again, even when I get the entire keyboard responding and typing what it should, it is completely messed up all over again upon restart. What on earth???

A:My laptop keyboard is driving me crazy - keeps missing out letters and spaces!

Sounds like you need a new keyboard.

Try a different OS to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, it is a hardware problem.

Parted Magic disk partitoning tool (Bootable CD image)
If you prefer a bootable USB key, download and run Linux Live USB Creator. Choose the Parted Magic distro, and it will download it and automatically create a bootable USB key.

This CD (or key) contains many useful tools. You can partition, recover files, recover lost partitions, make disk images (by several different methods), transfer files between media, scan for viruses (It can serve as an Alternative Trusted Platform for search and elimination of rootkits and bootkits), examine and benchmark hardware, access the internet, and much more.

Hi all,I've recently inherited my brother's computer and it seems to have some sort of virus/trojan/spyware problem that I can't remove using CWShredder, Spybot, AdAware, or McAfee Virus scan. For starters, the IE homepage is set on "about:blank" and I can't change it. There's also a folder called "links" that's been added to my favorites and it comes back no matter how many times I delete it. Finally, whenever I open IE it does one of two crazy things: 1) my CD drives open and close and I'm taken a red screen that says "DANGER: SPYWARE", with the results of a supposed full system scan that shows I have spyware infections and tries to get me to try something callled AdwareDelete; or 2) even more disturbingly, a warning message is displayed which says - WarningSystem detected illegal access to your computer.Your computer is infected by "W32.HLLP.Spreda.B.sp4 v2.016" password-stealing virus.Somebody with IP address (Nigeria) is trying to get illegal access to your computer through port 443. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

I'm usually pretty good at solving my own computer problems, but lately it's been driving me CRAZY!!!!!
I have Windows XP on my computer. My husband children and I all have our own desktops. For the last few days my desktop won't play any sound. My husbands will and so will my kids'. When i go into my control panel and try to see if it is muted or adjust the volume it says it doesn't even detect speakers. Yet it is fine on the other desktops.
I tried to do a system restore to when they were working fine, but it won't do a system restore. I've tried three different dates and won't do it.
I also have a pop-up blocker, but have been getting all kinds of pop-ups lately.

Is this a virus problem? I have Norton's 2005 and Ad-aware and have run both of them, they say everything is fine.

Can anyone help?

Hi! This is my first time posting but I have been doing a lot of reading so I might be able to talk somewhat intelligently on the subject of things... but forgive my overall lack of knowledge - I'm trying to learn! Hope this is in the right thread!

So my mom logged on the computer this morning and the desktop was completely changed bright read with a swirled symbol in the middle and it had some link written on the bottom of it having to do something with downloading a program to help get rid of spyware. (I'm not sure what it was at the moment because by using "SpyBot" I was able to get rid(?) or stop whatever was doing that - forgot to write it down. It also started adding all these programs to the desktop, all the adds were popping up, and it was trying to tell us to download all these different programs to help protect the computer. It always was saying that there was a virus that was going to be able to get into our accounts and get passwords etc. Unfortunately my mom clicked on a pop up - thinking it was an update to a program we already have - that said you could get some kind of software update for free, but of course it kept leading her to all this other stuff trying to get her to buy things. I've been running "Avast!" and it has found a couple viruses and I told it move them to "the chest". She woke me up and I did the best I could to stop everything. What should I do next? A:Monitor acting CRAZY!! help!!!

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Has it been like this since you had the machine or is it something that has happened recently?

Do you have access to any other monitor / LCD that you could test on it? Perhaps borrowing one from a friend or neighbour to confirm that the problem is (or isn't) the LCD itself.

Ive done a search for that monitor number but can't seem to find anything. What is the make / model?

Does the monitor have more than one input? If so you could try changing it either with the cable or it may have an 'input' select button on the front. This shouldn't be a problem as it should default to whichever it is detected a signal from, but worth a shot.

This whole situation confuses me greatly. It started out with my installing the latest version of aol 9.0 security edition and downloading the mcafee software to go with it.After I dled that stuff, my internet stopped working completely. IE won't work, aol won't work.I first tried scanning for viruses. I had about 10000 viruses.I deleted them all. Still no internet. I deleted aol next. Still no internet. Then I deleted mcafee. Still no internet. I've tried repairing it, restarting my router, flushing the dns cache, checking everything I could possibly think of and still no internet. The weird part about it is in the bottom right corner of my comp where my icons are its shows internet being connected however it does not work. No firewalls are on or anything that could block out internet.

DSL Internet
Router connected
Windows xp sp1
Anything else, just ask.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me!!!

A:Internet acting crazy

Though the icon in the notification area may show a connection it may not actually be connected. I would suggest that you first verify that you are connected to the router by logging in to it.

Please let me know if this helps or if you need further assistance.

My computer has really been acting up as of late, and I think it may be due to the fact that I am conastantly online becasue of broadband. I think I may be infected, SOmetimes I cant get online if the computer has been on for awhile. The network connections say i am "connected" but I cant go online. A:Computer Is Acting Crazy

Hello,The main problem with your computer is the fact that you have installed more than one Antivirus and Firewall. No wonder you are having problems. You have Zonealarm Firewall. Norton with Firewall Monitor Service and McAfee. Also, I see you are still using an outdated version of Ewido. Ewido has been updated to AVG Antispyware. Rather than giving you extra protection, this can actually give problems because of incompatibility issues, can even cause BSODs and decrease the reliability of it seriously! Also, it causes a serious system slowdown, connection problems etc etc.I would strongly advise you to only have one Anti-Virus with the Auto-Protect feature running at any one time!If you decide to only keep one Anti-Virus installed, you should uninstall the other(s) through the Add or Remove Programs option in Control Panel.

2) When i start press the start button it takes about 35 to 40 seconds for my computer to Actually start....basically what i am saying is that the startup boot screen comes 35 seconds after i press the start button... this never happend before and just started doing this today....

Any Suggentions on what is happening

A:motherboard acting crazy

I am guessing when you say you press the "start button" are you talking about power button on your case, not "Start" button as in, Windows? Right?

Sounds like the "default" BIOS settings are not right, overclocked or not. Sounds like you just need to set everything, not to defaults or to failsafe, but to "correct" settings.
This would be multiplier and RAM CAS speeds etc...

Taking 35 seconds to show you the post screen would be that the system is having trouble detecting everything.
You'll have to go into BIOS and check that the settings are right. Or at least that they are all AUTO.

good luck

Brad, welcome to TSG. I'm Liz and while you wait for your log to be read you need to do a couple of things.

First, you have an outdated HiJack This log. You need to go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155 and download the newest version, please.

Next, you are running hijack this out of a temporary directory on your desktop. Can you please create a folder in My Documents and call it Hijack (or something similar). Then extract hijack this into the folder you have created and run it from there. The reason for this is that Hijack this backup files may be deleted if it is being run from a temporary folder.

Then re-run it and post the newest log. Liz

I have tried to find a similar problem here but don't see anything that fits.

I have a friends machine and it takes about ten minutes too boot up to the point where the desktop icons are there. I worked on this machine and cleaned it up and had it running great in June. I have a backup on an external HDD from that time (june). Now the device manager icon is missing in control panel and I can't get the thing to connect to my wireless network. I can't find the wireless networks on the networks connections. I have checked and verified that the switch for the wifi card is on. But there are several things just "missing" Got me baffled.

Hi i really need some help, my pc has been doing all kinds of weird crap over the last couple of days. On a few occasions, it would just turn off out of no where, I restarted the thing and it told me that there was no hard drive to boot from. I used to bios to auto detect the hard drive and it said there was nothing there.

I unplugged the sata cable and the power, then plugged the hard drive back in and then it started normally - only to pull the same crap again half a day later. I decided to re-install Vista, and then my dvd-rom stopped working as the bios told me there was no connection, plus the physical eject button did nothing. So I unplugged the dvd-rom, plugged it back in, and it worked.

So I reinstalled Vista, and the PC was incredibly slow, I couldn't even right click on the "my computer" icon cause the computer would take years to load. So I re-installed Vista again.. this time the pc seemed fine, but when I reinstalled my audio drivers, I got the blue screen of death. I have no idea what is going on.

The only new hardware I had installed was a 500gb HD and I tried out the windows 7 beta using the new HD and then it all screwed up like 2 days later. If anyone has any suggestions please help me out.
