Whenever I log on to my Cmopaq CQ40 laptop it says it cannot find my profile and have been logged on with a temporary one. It also deletes everything I have saved/downloaded before (can't find it anywhere even doing a full search)
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When attempting to login to my main profile, after a several minute wait, Windows loads normally, but I receive a notice saying that I have been logged into a temporary profile, which would be deleted upon shutting down.
As far as I can tell, this started happening immediately after switching my cell phone from "LG Software" to "Charge Only" mode, while windows was logging in.
During every bootup, I am now prompted with the following options:
Launch Startup Repair
Start Windows Normally
Upon selecting "Startup Repair", I am immediately shown the error "a required device is inaccessible".
It has just recently stopped giving me the "Startup Repair" option any more so I can't get the exact error code, but I believe it was 0x00000225, or something similar.
I cannot successfully load normal safe mode, or safe mode with networking. They fail with blue screen. I can only load safe mode with command prompt.
I have tried running "sfc /scannow". It finds errors after about 20% but says it is unable to fix them. Attempting to run chkdsk /f does not run on next boot.
It's been a while since I've done a backup, so I'd rather get this profile working again, than have to re-install. I also need to mention that this is an OEM (Dell) copy of windows, so, doing a repair install doesn't seem to be an option, or is it???
Hello Cam, and welcome to Seven Forums.
You might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before you had these issues may be able to fix them.
Hope this helps,
when i play farmville (facebk) i noticed that my laptop is slow. while my ram is 3gb already, dual core and im running vista business. do u think it has s/thing to do with vista??
My wife plays Farmville on my XP laptop that has just 1GB of RAM and an older Athlon64 CPU and it runs great.

I just bought a laptop yesterday, Compaq Presario CQ40-340TU. It came with Windows Vista Starter OS. Because of the limitations with networking, I need to install Windows XP on this laptop now. I have my own installer of Windows XP and can't afford to purchase a different version of Windows Vista so that's not an option for me.
I really hope someone can help me find drivers for Windows XP for the following. I'm not even sure if they're the right specifications for my laptop model but I found them on a site selling the same model and from the HP product information page.
I already have nLite and I'm ready to integrate SATA drivers with my WinXP installer but I don't know which drivers to include. Please, help me!

I've already found the WinXP drivers for the graphics adapter and ethernet/NIC.
Basing it on the list of drivers available online for this laptop, the most important driver I need is for the chipset.
Also, for the SATA drivers that I should integrate in my WinXP installer, that I still need to find.
I don't know where to find them. I hope someone here can help me, pretty please.
Hi, I am getting this unusal but annoying error when I log on to windows, it says that it?s running a temporary profile and it won?t be resolved until I log off and on again, and that works, I am just wondering why it happens. Event log states:
"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
I?m just wondering what the best course of action is to avoid this annoyance.
I would make a new user account and see if it works better.
I have a couple of users that this has happened to. They both have Dell Latitude D600 laptops with Windows XP SP2. Also have the novell client installed. They've all been running fine for many months. About a week ago, one guy logged in and all his desktop items were gone, settings back to default, etc.. He called me over to fix it. I discovered that he had been logged in under a local profile named TEMP instead of his. His actual profile was still there, but windows didn't log him in there. He didn't do anything different during boot up or logon. After a reboot, he logged on again and went into his proper profile. Its happened to him a few times now, and just yesterday I saw it happen to one of the other guys in the office. Quite baffling, and I haven't seen anything close to this problem in any forums I have searched. Have you heard/seen this before and do you have any ideas?
This is the same issue..but no resolution over on this site either.
I just did a reinstall on a Dell Dimension 3000, and now when I click on my user name I get logged onto the "temp" profile instead of either my previous (before I reinstalled) profile, or the new one that seems to have been created since reinstalling, but is not visible from the User Accounts in the control panel. The User Accounts shows my account, my kid's account, and a guest account. When I look at the "All Users" file in explorer it shows many more accounts. How can I point a logon at a specific profile? I am not on a network or domain controller. This is a stand-alone home PC. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!
I believe that the proper place from which to adjust profiles...would be User Accounts in Control Panel. If a new, temporary profile was created by XP...you were probably advised to create a new permanent one and transfer the settings to same. I have a Win7 system with 3 users defined on it. One is my account with admin privileges, the others are two standard users (belonging to "Users" local group). The machine is not in a domain.
It happens randomly that, loggin on with the standard users account, the Win7 builds a temporary profile informing the user that it was not possible to access the files of their profiles and that the temp profile will be deleted after use.
When I am in this situation the only thing I can do to make the simple users log on with their profiles is to restart the PC.
Does anyone know how can I identify where is the problem?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Paolo -
Here is a tutorial on the fascinating phenomenon of temporary user profiles -
If that doesn't work for you, I suggest that you re-install Windows 7.

Attempting to help my friend out with a computer problem.
She starts up, logs into acccount, gets a 10 minute wait at the loading/welcome screen, then gets logged into a temporary account. it still says she is logged in under her name in the start menu, but it is the default screensaver, and desktop files are not present. It also goes into the computers default demo mode on timed intervals of non-use.
In regedit under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList There were 2 subfiles which were identical. I deleted the one that had /TEMP in the ProfileImagePath subfolder, and removed the .bak from the file that had the correct username in the Profile Image Path.
...and I think I made it worse. I attempted to log in and got this after a long welcome screen:
"the local session manager service failed the logon"
"the group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation"
I am logged into the 2nd account she has, and I am trying now to make a new account so i can transfer her old files over to the new one. However when creating a new account it won't let me enter a name!
Everytime I enter a name no matter what it is, I get this message saying "The specified account name is not valid, because account names cannot contain the following characters: /\":; etc"
My attempted account name does not contain any of these characters

I forgot to mention I am logging into a non-administrator account. I tried to make the account an administrative one, but the changes won't stick. I also tried to make another admin account thru various methods, all of them were denied.
I attempted to activate the hidden Admin account via the cmd window, access was denied.
It seems like the BSOD is chasing me...
This time it's about my own laptop.
Its a Compaq cq40 and It's been acting very strange since a couple of weeks.
Suddenly a BSOD will come up and restar my computer.... but I can still use it...
I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....
I'm posting the dump files...
Thanks in advance!
It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!

Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all.Just as the title said.
My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.
P.S sorry for the late reply

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers

Hello, I have a HP Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook. Currently, Windows Vista is installed on the notebook. I am planning to upgrade the notebook to Windows 7 Professional Edition. However, when I searched for drivers for Windows 7, I did not find any on HP website. I searched as follows: 1. Visited http://support.hp.com/us-en2. Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage. Please tell me the link for installing drivers for this notebook for Windows 7 Professional Edition. Regards,Aziz

I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.
I have no idea what is going on with Vista! Whenever I sign into my profile, it displays the Welcome screen but then it displays a screen that says Setting Up Desktop. After it finally logs in, my account picture is gone and a balloon from the taskbar pops up saying There were errors loading your account. Temporary profile has been loaded. On top of that, a lot of programs (including most Windows programs) fail to load b/c of missing dlls (sometimes in the Program Files directory, sometimes in the Windows folder.
I really have no idea!!!
I bought a new computer a few months back with Vista pre-installed. I also got a new Hp digital camera at the same time. I can upload and view photo's from my camera using windows, but my videos come in black. There is audio, but no sound.
Anyone have any idea why this is, or a solution to this problem (even using different program to view pics)?
I spent hours on the phone with HP and no help.
By the way, this is only one of many issues with Vista ( I hate it), but the most pressing at this moment.

I realize everything is gone when I log back in.

It has a MacAfee antivirus. I ran Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, AdwCleaner, and it found nothing but some cookies.

You cannot post a FRST log in the Windows forums.
Please post the sfc log in your topic. Do not post it in code or in quotation, and do not use a host site with will download the log to my computer.
To find sfc /scannow log, type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
cmd will appear above the search box under Apps., right click on it and choose Run as administrator, this will open the Elevated Command Prompt. This will look simlare to the image above.
Copy and paste the following in the Search programs and files box, then press Enter.

Yesterday, I shut down my computer. A few hours later when trying to log back in, I get logged onto a blank profile, which I assume is a temporary profile.
Curiously the ProfileImagePath string under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-842173820-3506557639-1618326103-1004 is pointing to C:\Users\Mike_2.Mike-PC instead of C:\Users\Mike_2, which I assume is a temporary/alternate profile. (which I didn't create)
This has happened before, but usually a few restarts fixed the problem, however, that doesn't seem to be working now.
My question is, is there a way to reassociate the profile with the correct user folder? Or do I have to transfer everything over to a clean profile?
Its not an association issue, the user profile is corrupt, and is replaced by a temporary one.
Best thing to do is create a new user account, and migrate to that.
Hi all. I've been building a modest PC so that I can simply run my games emulators through my plasma TV as well as films and music. I'm using the old D: from my other computer which holds all the games, films and music.
After a nightmarish 2 days of hardware problems I finally have XP installed but my current roblem comes when I log on and at the windows startup screen I get the message -
'Windows cannot create temporary profile directory. This may be caused by insufficiant security rights.'
Which is then followed by this message -
'Windows cannot load the user profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system'
So I am on windows but nothing works because I need administrator right and permissions to run programs like my emulators (or at least to take ownership of them to make them run!) I went to user accounts in the control panel to mess about but any changes I try to make are met with the message -
I have googled the problem and there seems to be absolutely zero information on it. The microsoft site had a small section about part of it but the fix it gave was completely useless and did nothing.
Can anyone here help with this? I'm at my wits end being so close.
Thanks. System specs below -

I did some renaming and copying over of his old profile stuff to a new one and noticed the TEMP profile was no longer there in the Documents and Settings. Does anyone know if the TEMP profile becomes hidden, moved somewhere else, or deleted?

How to recover the damaged user profile in Windows XP
First off I'd like to thank you very much for even opening this thread! I greatly appreciate the help! The following error message only occurs after someone has been logged onto the computer on their account for an extended period of time (I think it's about 5 or 6 hours and over, but I have no way of being sure). A few months ago I got a pretty bad virus infection, I cleaned it all up and the system ran, but had some errors going on with windows. I then bought an external hard drive. So I re-formatted and re-installed windows XP. Then I found this error message after logging off of my user, and then having my brother try to log onto his user profile. There are 5 user profiles on this computer, and only one of them has administrative rights at the moment.“Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator.”Followed by:“Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off”So it only occurs when someone has been logged on for over 5 hours, and then tries to log onto another person's profile it doesn't affect only one profle, but usually affects all profiles but the one that was logged into for over 5 hours.I have tried running chkdsk, it comes up with no problems. I've tried running S... Read more
This problem is more serious than you think...since eventually user access could be denied.
Damaged profiles occur routinely...they beoome showstoppers only because users ignore the warnings that are provided...by permitting access via temporary profiles.
Users need to create a new profile...and then transfer settings, etc. from the damaged to the new...in order to overcome a damaged profile.

Hi all ,
Is there a way to stop logging of temp files at C:Windows\Temp ?
I deleted everything in that folder which was about 5GB and also emptying the recycle bin soon after but within an hour another set of temp files almost 5GB are again loaded in that same folder. Now my hard drive has no more space left. I have deleted that folder several times in one day but theres no end to it filled up.
Is there a way to stop this ?

I fixed several annoying problems with help from a furum member, but in the process sounds, start-up +Microsoft noises through the inbuilt speakers have disappeared.
When I plug my Skype in via USB port minimal sound can be heard, as can through headphone speskers when plugged in. The media player handles a CD with similar result.
When I look at the volume indicator in the bottom right tray, it indicates fluctuating levels maybe 3 - 6%, despite the control being at 100.
All today I have been reading various answers on forums, but cannot find any solution. Many suggestions suggest I g to places on Control Panel that do not exist under the name supplied.
Does anyone have any idea(s) where I might find a way to fix this?
Many thanx in advance
Hope this is in correct thread !!
Hello & welcome to the forum,
Please look here for the latest drivers for your system & start from there!

I received a Compaq Presario 500 series Laptop for Christmas. Here it is 6 months later and I still HATE Vista. I purchased a full copy Of Windows XP with SP2. HP was kind enough to give me links for drivers.
I saved the files from the links to an external hard drive.
I know from reading the forum you can boot from the XP disk. How do I get the drivers to the Compaq? If I move the files from the ext. hd where do I move them to?
I am not computer smart.
After xp is installed hook up your external drive, and install the drivers.Read other 3 answers
I just turned on my computer and attempted to log in as normal. A message came up saying "Windows could not locate local profile, creating temporary profile". All my settings (internet etc) have reverted to what looks like the factory settings and my files have all disappeared. I am the administrator, the other user account on my computer is perfectly normal (all files present etc). So far I have tried logging out and logging back in, and restarting the computer but nothing has changed.
I am running Windows XP (home edition), I don't have service pack 3 installed, my browser is Mozilla Firefox (also have but don't use IE7). I regularly run antivirus scans with AVG 7.5 free edition and the last scan was clear (at the weekend).
Thanks for any help!!!

Recently I upgraded from IE7 to IE8 via a windows update. Once I did so, I found that it was constantly asking for my login and password for websites. For example, eBay, Facebook, Yahoo email. It just wouldn't store my login details and kept prompting me to log back in again.
I have downgraded back to IE7, but the same is still happening!
What is going wrong?
It is not a problem with auto-complete - the settings are correct for that, and once I get to the login page, it is mostly remembering my actual log in details on the login/password fields. The problem is the fact that it keeps prompting me to log in in the first place.
I have finally gotten most of my home network running. My only problem left to fix is how to I log onto a profile right away without going through the general users stuff. AS it is right now, I have to log off in order to get to the Windows log on screen, is there any way to go directly to that screen on start up?
I am running Windows 98se
Any suggestions, I would love to hear them
install client for MSN. If its there, reinstall it... and set it as teh default log in.
