How do I flash my American Megatrends BIOS? I've tried everything!

Q: How do I flash my American Megatrends BIOS? I've tried everything!

Specs first:

e6700 3.2 GHZ.
4GB Patriot extreme ram (4 x 1GB) @ 800MHz and 4 - 4 - 4 - 12 T2 (T1 causes BSOD ).
XFX 8800 GTS
Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe w/ ver 5## BIOS (Possibly a custom one from the OEM).

My computer is working fine, excpet for one minor detail...

My Asus P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe doesn't like my new 4GB of 800MHz ram. The ram is fine. XP 32 bit runs fine with only 2-3 GB in use, but Vista Ultimate 64-Bit is terrible, running at least 5 times slower and maxing out the processor and freezing a couple of minutes just to open Fire Fox. I am considering buying a new mobo, but I heard there is another way.

Some people have gone into their BIOS and enabled an option called "Memory Remapping," which fixed the problem. The catch is: My BIOS doesn't have that option for some odd reason... Surprise, surprise after my cellphone provider had to send 2 SIM cards to me for the phone to work and my External Backup HD had failed just a couple of months after I bought it(Goodbye 100+ Gigabytes of data).

I checked the manual that went with my mobo, and the bios version in the manual and on my computer were EXACTLY the same! Though, the menu in the Manual had many more options than did the one on my computer. So, I go to Asus's website and download the latest official (not beta) driver. Then, I pop in the Asus CD that came with my mobo and tried to run "Asus Update". Every time I run this I get an error message: "Unable to create NT driver service for BS_DEF.DLL". After I click OK (which is NOT OK, damn u windows!), another message pops up: "No ASUS motherboard Installation will be abooted now." Yes, something is OBVIOUSLY wrong here, they obviously have no idea what they're doing, even the error messages are spelled wrong! I tried again and got an error message titled "ASUS BIOSINFO.DLL" and the message was a string of sixteen or seventeen random characters. Clicking OK caused the same message as before to pop up (wanting me to ABOOT the installation...)

The next thing for me to do was try to flash the BIOS from a floppy disk. The guide I consouled for this method told me to put their upgrade utility AND the bios update on a bootable floppy disk. I tried formatting with the MS-DOS startup disk option ticked (and after that failed, without it ticked). The computer could not boot from the floppy disk (or the other one I tried, either). The disk (1.44 MB) could not hold both the upgrade program and the updated bios file (so, I tried with just the update program on the floppy and the BIOS update on the hard disk).

So, I tried running the update program in windows XP Pro.

Program (AFUWIN.exe): "... close all other programs before continue."

Me: Clicky Ok button.

Program (AFUWIN.exe): "Error: BIOS does not support AFU."

Me: Alt + F4
Then, I try running the Dos version of the program in the command prompt...

... AMI Firmare Update Utility Ver.4.14 ... ...

- Error: This program can not run under this operating system (not surprising, I don't think it's supposed to, but it should have at least booted from the Floppy Disk!).
So, here I am... Please, somebody help me, I'm seriously stumped here.
I do have another computer with its own BIOS chip. It's about 3 years old, though. The PC I'm on right now is approaching its first year, and it's a gaming rig, so I don't know what bizzare effects that might cause.

*Edit: I removed the big AFUWIN.exe file from the disk and the bios update file fits, hopefully it boots.

*Edit: No luck.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Argh, not even a boot cd did the trick! The DOS files loaded onto the cd and the cd ran just like a floppy disk, but the BIOS files were nowhere to be found! WTF, did I use nero wrong?

Need to know will the HP 110-220z American Megatrends BIOS support booting from an Ubuntu Live DVD ISO  on a usb thumb drive with a boot sector I need to fix a Ubuntu 16.04 load sectors corruption problem.  the cd/dvd drive has diedbeen through all the disable security and finally got the USB thumb drive listed in the memory list.  The version of the BIOS is 2.15.126 I have not been able to find any specs on what it can and cannot do. Now I have lost Ubuntu Grub loader and the machine starts loading win7 each time. It has not been used for over 2 years and Microsoft will demand two days of updates be loaded before I can access any drive from it. I need the live CD Ubuntu to load from the thumb drive so I can fix grub and use utilities to fix the inability to read certian sectors. [Have run HP diagnostics on the Hard disk, no problems found.]

The support page for that model indicates it came with Windows 8.1, which means it should also have UEFI BIOS.  Depending on the way the Ubuntu Live was added to the flash drive, it might not be done correctly.  See this page on Ubuntu and UEFI BIOS.  BTW: it needs to be a 64bit installhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

What does this mean?

A:American Megatrends

This means that the hard drive is about to fail. S.M.A.R.T is a utility that monitors the health of the hard drive and reports any potential problems, like an early warning system. When it says "S.M.A.R.T Status Bad" This is not a good thing. Does it give you an option to bypass and get to Windows? If so backup your important data.

Hello, experts!
For the past few weeks, I've been seeing the AMI screen everytime I turn on my computer. It wasn't like that before, so I have no clue why it's showing up now. I pressed f1 and f2 numerous times and went through every session, still I cannot find the problem of why it keeps appearing during startup.

Since I just received a new computer this April, I'm not very familiar with the new AMI then I was with Windows XP. Instead, I used screen-shot to show my AMI screen. I hope this will help!

Hi I have windows 7 on my pc. When I start up my pc it shows this weird message. I know it's not a virus cause I have a very good antivirus on. It says the following: American Megatrends - Usb Device Over Current Status Detected !!!
Sata port 5 : ST2000DL003-9VT166
S.M.A.R.T Status Bad , Backup and Replace
System wil shut down in 15 seconds!!!

A:American Megatrends message unknown

OK, you are running the system overclocked. Not too much however it shows both ram and cpu running faster than normal. It is probably the board failing however the very first thing I would do would be to return ALL settings to stock. Clear RTC [cmos] to return settings to stock. Once you clean RTC, pull the pw connectors from ALL drives; both hd and optical. Now disconnect any usb device ie printer, scanner, external drive, etc.

Pw ON and see if the board will successfully complete POST.

Remember there is NO safe overclock. All overclocking entails some degree of risk.

Ok, so before you reply, please make note that I didn't build this pc myself, it was custom built in a company by order. I don't know a thing about inside of computer. Of course, I know the main parts, but repairing or tinkering, nooo.

Pc specs:
Intel i5-2400 3.1 Ghz Quad Core
8 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 550ti Graphics Card.

The thing is, in my opinion, this pc is properly cooled and built, because I've been having it for almost a year and I've never had this problem before.

So okay, I got back home and turned on my pc. And I noticed a problem. My video was slow. Videos on youtube were slow and choppy, I tried like moving windows and their movement was slow. At first I thought its a video card or monitor problem and I tried rebooting my pc. When I pressed restart, before booting windows, the computer shows the window:
American Megatrends

(Computer info)

CPU over temperature error!
Press F1 to continue setup.
Is it really overheated? Because I've never had this problem before, I didn't had it the other day I was using it and I'm using it a lot. What to do? I really can't just open up the case and see the problem, I'm not that experienced.

A:American Megatrends - CPU Over Temperature ERROR

Why can't it be overheating? Things do break, or come loose, and they can get dirty too.

Download HW Monitor and see what the CPU/Core temps are, for that matter check all the temps. Best would be to post a screen shot of HW Monitor.

HW Monitor: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

If the computer is truly overheating then it will need to be opened up to see why.

I don't know why but yesterday, after restarting my computer it beeped once then went to the AMI screen. Plus my computer has become very slow it might have something to do with it. I am asked to press f1 or f2 and if I press f1 I go to this configuration screen and I don't know what to do. But I do see that the word BIOS is written everywhere on the screen. It dose that every time I turn it on. I haven't had any big problems except my computer is running kinda slow. How do I get rid of the message?

Hi,

So today when I went to get on my computer it beginning to boot up and then turning itself off. It would repeat this until I held the power button while it was turning on. I then turned it on the next time and got American Megatrends, as shown in the image. I went to BIOS as it said and then saved and exited without changing anything. I then hoped it was fixed and turned it on again, to find it went back to turning itself on and off every 10 seconds. Then I did the same thing of turning it off and got back into the cycle with the American Megatrends screen...

A friend of mine came to me with this problem. He has an American Megatrends motherboard and can't get it to boot past the Checking NV RAM.. part

here is what is on the screen when it freezes
American Megatrends
AMIBIOS
TYAN TSUNAMI AT V2.00.01 012520001800
Intel 440BX AGPset

P II, 400Mhz
Checking NVRam..

then down at the bottom of the screen it says
62-0101-00999-0010111-071595-440BX/GX-51830001-5

What we have done:
Switched PCI video card to another PCI slot
Disconnected everything but the floppy/cd/harddrive
Reseated the RAM, switched RAM slots, and tried different RAM modules with ones that are known to work.

He says 1 time it made it past checking NVRam (where it counts the RAM) and then froze when it first said hit del to enter BIOS.

Edit: He also remembered that when he first booted he had 3 RAM modules in and all it would say is American Megatrends with the logo and that was it, so he removed 2 and left 1 and thats where we are now.

2nd Edit: When I asked him what happens when he tries it with no RAM he says "nothing, it beeps".

Anyone have any ideas on what to try next? Could it just be that the motherboard is bad where the RAM fits?

A:Problems getting to POST on American Megatrends MOBO

Alright - I just recieved word that it now works. Which leads me to believe that even though it appeared we had the RAM set properly it wasn't.
Now it boots into Win98 and just gives the usual errors when you don't have proper drivers installed and such, I'm going to let him work on that on his own because I think he has a pretty good handle on getting that set straight.
(he pulled this PC together from scrap parts so even getting this thing to run is a plus for him)
I'll post back with any other motherboard related problems that might crop up.

hi folks. good day to you all. my name is max. i can install windows and manage basic troubleshooting related to software without any problems. a couple of months back i installed windows xp on my friends computer and it was working fine but a month after installation, when he booted the comp up, he would get the startup options msg (safe, normal and so on) instead of windows booting up normally. when he tried to boot it up in any mode, the windows xp loading logo would just appear and windows just kept restarting. i thought it might be a software problem ,so i made a fresh install of xp and it was working fine . but now once again the same problem seems to have occured. this screen pops up when he starts the comp. i have included the image he sent me (its a bit blurry but you can make out whats on it). i searched about it and as you can see in the image, the problem seems to be about CMOS settings. now, from what i have learned so far after researching about it is that its either the CMOS battery that has lost its charge, died, or maybe its just a CMOS (or bios? not sure) settings problem. can you guys please take a look at the image and tell me what exactly is wrong and what steps i would have to take to fix his problem? thank you in advance.

Here's the problem: When I start my computer, I'll get a black screen with a bunch of text with "American Megatrends" as the header. The screen is unusual, and on the bottom it says "CPU fan error!, press F1 to continue." If I simply press f1 and ignore it, my computer eventually shuts off, and restarting my computer doesn't get my display back, I have to reset my cmos.

Things that I've tried: Now, I had this problem before, and my computer doesn't have a cmos switch, so I had to take out the battery for a couple minutes, and that worked.
Today I woke up to have the same problem. Only this time, when I took out the battery and put it back, the problem persisted.
So I tried entering my system setup and set "CPU fan speed" to ignore, that still did nothing.

So I'm aggravated, annoyed and helpless. Any help would be appreciated.

This week I moved to Windows 10 and decided to also update BIOS to the latest version, since FBKTB4A "added Win10 support" according to changes.txt, and also there has been important security fixes regarding Intel ME, so I downloaded the latest version FBKTCLA and run the update. The problem is, I know there are two parts in updating the BIOS on these systems (I also got an M93p Tiny), and in my case the first part (afudos.exe imagefb.rom /p /r) runs OK (erasing, updating and verifying main block), but the second part (afudos.exe imagefb.rom /defans /capsule /b /n /r /sp) fails right before erasing giving me15 - Error: Secure Flash function is not supported on this platformand after that no reboot and no second part of the update. After this my system boots OK and BIOS version is reported as FBKTCLA with BIOS date 11/17/2017, butboot block is FB72Aembedded controller is FBCT13ACPU microcode is 306C3_00000017 (08/16/2013)ME version is 9.0.20.1447UEFI diagnostic tool is v. 02.09.09Intel VBIOS version 1030So I got the newest BIOS, VBIOS and newest UEFI diagnostic tool but still got old boot block (should be FBCLA), EC (should be FBCT32A), CPU microcode (should be 306C3_00000021 05/10/2016) and ME firmware (should be 9.1.41.3024)The system works and I have no problems with my Windows 10 install, luckily th... A few days ago I had some problems with my HDD so I brought a new one.  To install Windows in the new drive I plugged in the DVD drive that Lenovo ships with the laptop and tried to boot from it. That failed and BIOS got like "programmed" or stuck with configurations that doesn't let it recognise any boot media no matter if it is a USB stick or HDD, no matter if I try to change the configuration of the BIOS it would always get back to the initial state of not being able to boot I even tried to reset it by unplugging its battery and the laptop battery but the only thing that happens is system time starting from 0 while any other configuration stays the same.  I thought this could be fixed using crisis recovery mode, but the laptop doesn't recognise the BIOS loaded on the USB and never make any sort of beep or alert noises, the screen doesn't show anything either and fans just get to 100% I really need help to solve this problem, it's like the BIOS got stuck in the last configurations before plugging the DVD drive in. (The Boot menu still showing that there's a USB booteable device even when it is not plugged in).

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

Im working on a Toshiba Laptop A105-4284, Model #: PSAA8U-0FH02K that froze while trying to flash the BIOS, so I didnt know what else to do but shut it off. Now, when I try to boot it up, it gets stuck in the same place it did during the flashing; on the Toshiba splash screen with the status bar at the bottom showing about 20% complete. I cant get into the BIOS and cant boot into Windows. Other options available on this screen are Press F2 for System Settings and F12 for Boot Menu. Pressing F2 results in a beep and the status bar changing to "Please Wait..." but nothing else happens no matter how long I wait. Pressing F12 doesnt do anything. Pressing ESC takes me to a screen that shows the typical system info -- Phoenix Technologies Version 6.00; Intel Calistoga CRB.T3A Reference BIOS; VERSION.MAK 1.53; (looks like its running POST and recognizes CPU, Cores, No TPM or TPM has a problem, and system RAM and stops there. What is my best course of action?:

- shorting out the CMOS battery (I've tried this on the solder pads marked C88, with no laptop battery, with and without the wi-fi, ram and hdd installed; Im either doing it wrong or its just not working )
- trying to reflash BIOS chip (I tried this; turned the laptop on and held down the 'c' key to boot from cd, but still got stuck at the same place)
- replacing the BIOS chip
- something else?

Any guidance or information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

A:Toshiba A105: Failed BIOS flash; now no BIOS access & won't boot

Im trying to figure out why I've had no replies yet.

Have I asked a stupidly easy question that everyone is rolling their eyes to and cant bear to tell me the answer? Or have I stumped everyone?

I have a hard time believing this is a stumper. I've found the same question posted elsewhere on the net and shorting the CMOS seemed to help. That or removing the battery altogether (its soldered to the board), but I dont think Im doing it right. Can someone give me directions on that?

or is this just a lost cause? :-/

Thanks in advance

I have a PC with an HP motherboard P5LP-LE, HP bios and on-board Intel video. I can't do anything with this bios as it is locked to an HP set-up. I would like to wipe out the HP and flash it with a bios that I could work with - adding a new CPU and load up XP or vista.
I'm not sure what's involved in doing this, so would appreciate any help I can get. Is this doable and what bios would I use to do so?

A:Can`t Upgrade Dell E6410 Bios - Dell BIOS Flash window does not work

Well, i follow the folowing steps from this forum (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19413136/19971740.aspx#19971740):

1. Install UNetbootin from synaptic2. Run it and create a FreeDOS USB key.3. Copy the exe BIOS update file to the USB key from inside ubuntu.4. Reboot into BIOS setup and change the boot order to boot from USB5. Boot into a live freedos session. * The USB key will offer to install freedos on your hard disk. DONT - that is ubuntucide!* Don't use himem or or that other memory thingywhatsit - just straight freedos6. C: 7. dir8. run the update

And i could install the Bios Upgrade. Now are upgraded to A13.
Aniway something is wrong, because from windows OS, the installer does not start !!!

I recently was using a trial version of Alcohol 120% to mount an image on a virtual drive, after I was done with that I tried to unmount the image and it said my trial was over! Suddenly Xp was very sluggish and in the task manager it said that system idle process was at a lofty 97 under cpu usage... I couldn't do anything but turn off my computer. Now I can't even boot into windows. I can only go into safe mode. In the device manager I have code 37s under plug and play Bios extension and PnP Bios extension. I already did the uinstall reinstall bit with those two and that failed to make a difference. Hp says I need to update my bios, however The program I downloaded won't run, presumebly due to me being in safe mode. Hp has suggested that I make a boot disk but I can't seem to figure this out... Suggestions? Help? Mainly I want to know if I can fix this without flashing the bios but if I can't can somebody give me DETAILED step-by-step instructions on creating a boot disk with my bios update files on it? Thanks.

Hello! CAn someone help me answer these 4 questions. Your advice will be a big help!

1.What is the safest way to flash BIOS step by step?

2.How can I back-up my BIOS step by step?

3.How do I find the right BIOS UPDATE?

4. I used HP`s Product Dection and found this BIos update
MCP61PM-HM Motherboard BIOS Update*
I have v5.16 and this is v5.27 but doesn`t say the name of my motherboard(check my system specs) just wondering

A:Help on 1st BIOS Flash PLZ!

Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG is the name of your BIOS chip on the motherboard and not the model number for the motherboard.

If you have the HP Pavilion a6200n Desktop PC, then according to HP, your motherboard should be the MCP61PM-HM model number. In this case you should be able to use the BIOS update. You can verify this by looking for a small white sticker somewhere on the the motherboard itself that should have the model number on it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

im using Vista64 and would like to update the BIOS as theres over 50 fixes for it - im not having any problems but would like to update it - im wondering if anyone can help me create a bootable disc/usb-stick with a backup on and flash program so that if an upgrade goes wrong I can re-flash with another firmware from my USB stick or CD...

It's generally ill-advised to flash the bios unless you need to; you could render the system inoperable. However, to answer your question: BIOS Update per bootable CD

So I have been having an occasional weird crackling that occurs in my speakers and I've been told it's possible that updating my BIOS could help solve the problem. Well, I have an EVGA 750i FTW motherboard and I looked and found they say to do it all I need is to burn the .ISO they provide to a disc and boot from it and it will do it. My question is simply, do you all know if it would be automated or is it going to ask me something that I have to select or anything else?

It also made mention of clearing the CMOS by powering down - does this require anything extra than just a shut down (Like unplugging the machine, removing the battery, anything else like that)? I'd appreciate the advice, I've mostly never done these because I was afraid I'd screw it up but I don't know if I'm going to have to like direct the BIOS file where to install or tell it my version or if it's all automated. If they've made it automated then not really much to worry about I suppose - just want to know before I go through with it!

A:How to flash your BIOS

First things first:
WARNING: Look at the bios release notes. If it doesnt specifically state a known issues being fixed you are having, it may not help. Also, I wouldn't update the bios unless it does fix the issue you are having. No point in taking the potential risk.

Having said that, if you are Overclocked you will need to RESET TO OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS first.
Even if you are not OC'd reseting to optimized default before flash is always a good idea IMHO. But a MUST if OC'd.

Make sure the first boot device is set to CD ROM, and that you are in IDE mode.

Boot from the CD and follow the prompts.

After the bios flash is successful, you need to go back into them, RESET TO OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS again, and restart the MOBO. (Hard power down)
Then make all the needed settings you need to.
The hard pwer down may not be needed, but I always do.

Generally speaking, this is all youll need to do.
All boards are are slightly different to reset CMOS. Some require removing the battery, others have a little jumer you move. Im not sure about yours, so checking the official forums/manuals may be a good idea.
