Copy HDD from high spec to SSD in a lower spec system?

Q: Copy HDD from high spec to SSD in a lower spec system?

Hello there everyone! A newbee in here and also not much a smart *** in the realm of tech so kindly bear with me!

I have recently upgraded to a new laptop of the following specs:

DELL Inspiron, i7, 16GB Ram, 1 Tb HDD, Win 10 (genuine)

from an older laptop with following specs:

HP Pavilion, i3, 4GB Ram, 320GB HDD, Originally Win 7, later updated to Win 10 (genuine)
(Used this bad boy for almost 7 years!)

I still used my older laptop for work purposes until the HDD in it died on me last week for some particular reason. I have a spare SSD (500 GB) that I am thinking to replace the damaged HDD with. Since I am new this, I have a couple of doubts that I hope you lot in here can help me with:

1) Can I clone the HDD in my new laptop to the spare SSD and install the SSD in my older laptop, given the major differences in specs?

2) If the answer to (1) is yes, is there a particular set of steps I need to follow in this case or do I just follow the steps of a basic cloning process?

3) Assuming I could do the above, would I have to reinstall Windows in the older laptop? I still do have the Windows 7 Home product key that was originally installed on my older laptop.

Also do suggest if you think I should avoid the all-in-all idea of cloning and just freshly install Windows on the SSD and later just copy the files I need from my new laptop.

Thanking you in advance to taking the time out to read my post and helping me out!

Preferred Solution: Copy HDD from high spec to SSD in a lower spec system?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Copy HDD from high spec to SSD in a lower spec system?

You can't clone a 1TB hdd into a 500GB ssd due to size limitation.

It is also illegal to clone one Windows to be used on more than one computer.

You can just replace the dead hdd with your 500GB ssd now and install its original Windows 7 on it if you have the license.

You can pass the data between computer via a network or USB devices but the operation is not cloining. If you clone something it ends up with a mirror image of the original.

A ssd can be used in exactly the same way as a hard drive. It has nothing to do the high spec. In a higher spec PC things move just faster and the fast ssd is therefore put to a better use.

Hi everyone, Not sure if this belongs here or not so if its in the wrong place then by all means please correct it for me

anyway I had my comp build just over a year ago but when it was built it was considered to be high end, im not sure if its still considered to be high spec anymore but its not performing the way it should. I dont really play lots of games so im not sure how long the problem has been around for but its been in place for at least a couple months thinking back. heres my specs:

Thermaltake 600W Power Supply
ASUS P5N32-SLI DELUXE Motherboard

VGA eVGA GeForce 8800GTX 768Mb PCI-E VGA Card (169.25 driver)
Vista Premium
LG 194W 19" Wide LCD Monitor

Ive been getting really weird FPS drops during gameplay. CoD4 for example with start out at 90 but will settle down to 60~ sometimes and dip as low as 30~. Team Fort 2 does the same, but it will dip as low as 20-15fps

I just reformatted and all basic updates have been done. AVG also doesnt detect any viruses. I ran 3D mark Vantage (free trial run) and this is what I got.

Hey Guys im new to this site so i will try and keep it Short as i Have no clue about anything to do with tech!
Basically, when i am Playing music for example, i get a horrible bit of system lag which affects anything open for around 4 seconds then it goes back to normal

Another thing is i play minecraft and: Being its nature of Low graphic's my
Alienware m15x with an I7 processor which cost me an arm and a leg with A Nvidia Gforce game card should surely play with no lag or interference. But no! i have to put up with low graphics and short rendering which still produces lag.
Another game i play is World of warcraft which when i first bought my laptop would run on Ultra Everything,
Now it is only playable decently on good settings, i cant blame this on My wifi because i have BT infinity which is the fastest wifi at the moment!

Any Help would be REALLY appreciated!:L try and keep it simple as i am a complete Noob with all the tech "In's and Out's"

So the Flex 5 (15") 81CA's spec sheet says it uses DDR4-2133 RAM, but the RAM in the machine I received is definitely DDR4-2400. That's good, but I'm just wondering what's going on here. With DDR4-2400 RAM installed, does it actually run at 2400 MHz or 2133 MHz? And if it runs at 2133 by default, is there a way to change that to 2400? Per Intel's official CPU specs the CPU and chipset should support 2400. Any ideas?

A:Flex 5 (15") 81CA spec sheet RAM data rate doesn't match parts spec

Hi jdrch,

Greetings.

The 81CA does run on 2400 MHz as shown in the general specification sheet, 16GB max / 2133MHz or 2400MHz DDR4, one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket.

Checking on the general category for Flex 5 1570 here shows 80XB models had the 2133MHz and the 81CA had 2400 MHz. The same goes in the parts lookup page using model numbers 81CA here.

I hope this helps answer your query.

I just got a new laptop as a second computer. It has 1.8ghz processor and a gig of RAM. Everything is so stable, not one error yet. My Playstation emulator plays every game with full smoothing on with it's 32mb graphics card perfectly. DVD's are good quality. Task switching is smooth. Menus pop up instantly.

My PC is a disappointment. Unhappy with its performance from the word go, I upgraded its RAM to 2 gig. 256mb of that is eaten by what appears to be the most unstable graphics card in history. I have Vista on this one. I can't start the thing without an error or two appearing. It runs at a could crash any second state all the time, is constantly loading and more often than not has a display driver error. I need ReadyBoost to make it run at an acceptable state! The latest driver seem to fix one issue and break another (for instance I now have less display crashes but slow as anything graphics performance). It does work well for my music apps as its processor allows for lots of soft synths but its support for ASIO is awful. Do you reckon going down to XP will make it an impressive machine? As for DVD's, they are grainier than a bowl of shredded wheat!

A:Can anyone explain why my low spec laptop out performs my higher spec PC?

Anyone like to venture an opinion about what a server in a small LAN of max 6 machines should contain that a decent or hi spec workstation does not have - other than perhaps a larged hard drive?
Any opinions most welcome!

A:Server spec v. hi spec workstation

Hi

I run a domain server, there are 2 hard wired PC's, 4 wireless laptops, and 1 media box.
Its spec is a HP XE310 with 1GHZ CPU and 256 meg of memory, it has been running for over 2 years and has never crashed or failed yet.
Over the time i have added HDD's upto 300GB in size.

I run azureus over night on it and it works fine.

I had a chat with someone on here who recommended Linux or Unix as a server, myself I run Windoze server 2000 but thats a personal choice.

Looking for games performance, purely for the brag rights<g>. Really a case of which is going to give the better performance, benchmarks notwithstanding. At the mo I run the 48, which gives me about 15500 in PCMark Vantage, without an oc on the CPu although I have started and get great results so far. cheers all

Now this should run very quick in my eyes and run for example, football manager 2012 the 3d engine with no problem. However, it can be slow at times and the game engine is jerky. I recently brought and formatted and then installed windows 7 from vista and on vista was the same but was if anything a bit better on the game engine on football manager.

I have done register cleans, anti-virus checks, malware, defrags you name it i done it and not really made a difference so i am confused now, could maybe be software or hardware?

Thanks in advance

That system doesn't seem that high end to me, your FPS could be perfectly normal for the settings that you run Rappelz at. I personally have never played the game, but I know people who have, and I haven't heard much about high load graphics.

Anyways, what resolution do you run the game at? What filters/quality?

Hi,

This following PC spec is running very s-l-o-w-l-y on Windows 7 Enterprise ? particularly Outlook and Firefox. I've been told by our IT team the spec is too old to run Win 7. The user profile is streamed from a central server giving roaming profiles, i.e. your Outlook inbox and desktop is available from any PC you log into. All software is remote via data packages to give users bespoke software. This PC is used for general office work (MS Office) and reviewing video rushes in VLC player.

Current spec:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 1333MHZ, 6MB Cahce CPU
Zotac GeForce GTX 295 1792MB, DDR3, Dual DVI, HDMI G/C
Samsung Eco Green F2 500GB SATA 3.0 Gbps16MB Hard Drive
Intel MicroATX DQ45CB, VPro, 1333MHz FSB, Dual DVI, Sound, 1K Lan, DDR2

Funds are tight for IT but we're told we need 8Gb RAM (or better still 16Gb/32Gb), with at least i5 or i7.

Judging from Microsoft's spec it looks like we exceed the minimum spec? Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows.

Cheers :-)

A:Is this PC spec high enough to run Win 7 Enterprise?

If I had to wager a guess, I believe the real bottleneck on that computer is the hard drive. The HDD in question is a Samsung EcoGreen. As the name suggests, the EcoGreens are so called "green" drives that spin at a slower velocity (5400rpm, confirmed with some Google-fu) and aggressively power down to lower power consumption and heat output.

While such a drive is usually not problematic when just used for additional storage, I don't even want to know what kind of performance hits you would incur trying to run an entire operating system off it.

Hi,

This is my first post, and hopefully the problem can be solved. Usually I don't need to post on forums like these, but for this, I cannot solve the problem.

Okay, so when I play a high-end game (such as Crysis, Race Driver: Grid, Dead Space) I get good FPS of 40+ for the first 30 minutes or so, however the game then goes into a loop of lagging for a few seconds then resuming to the 40+ FPS for around a minute then starts lagging again for a few seconds and so on until I quit the game. Once I do quit the game, and re-open it, it works fine again for another 30 minutes and then does the same thing again.
Things I've already tried are:

1. Update official drivers from their official websites (nVidia, Intel, Samsung etc).
2. Closed down any consuming applications such as antivirus, msn, steam etc.
3. Placed more fans into my case to prevent overheating (but I don't think this is the issue as I can restart a game it works fine again for 30 minutes)

Can anyone give me any suggestions.

Stefan,

P.s. I am running windows 7 however the issue has occurred in Windows XP, Vista and 7. My specifications can be seen on my profile.

Thank you

+At first when I enter each game, it prety good, and some was awesome when it can easily hit 60+FPS (FRAPS)
+After playing a while(10-15 minutes), it start lagging a little and if I didn't close the game, just about 2 more minutes, the whole PC will crash.
I don't think dust cause this problem because I bough it a month ago
So can someone here who know please help me on this.
Here what I tried:

Okay, where to begin.

I have been working on this issue for around 2 months now, both on my own and with the help of the local computer store, though they are more familiar with standard home office computers than gaming rigs.

Problem started when i found out my WD 3tb hdd was starting to fail, so a friend if mine bought and dispatched a new toshiba 4tb drive as a favour (completely skint). The hdd arrived, so i went about replacing old with new and reinstalling windows. Now im a pretty average pc user, and reinstalling windows is something i have done often, but iv never swapped out a hdd. Anyway, upon rebooting, the pc would freeze at the starting windows screen, just before the coloured bubbles form the window.
Knowing that it may just have been a bad install, i repeated my steps, and no dice, trouble continued. So i went back to my old hdd, reinstalled windows and low and behold, same problem.

When playing high-spec games, every time I play, the game will at some point, usually sooner rather than later, crash. The nature of the crash is not one I have encountered before - the monitor suddenly loses its signal and resultantly goes on standby, while the tower crashes and requires a forced restart to reboot. The above, according to windows 7, is the problem's description. It has been absolutely driving me mad trying to find a solution to this problem as my knowledge is quite basic. Not a gamer, so I don't know whether the games you're having problem w/ are only GPU intensive or both GPU & CPU. Best thing might be to stress test your CPU & GPU separately.

You can run something like Furmark to stress test your graphics card. For CPU, maybe Prime95.

Hopefully one of these can help you rule out your problem.

Apologies for dropping my last thread relating to computer hangs, but it somehow got fixed by itself (I think I did something to fix it, but I didn't remember it long enough to post the solution).

I now have another issue, which has been here since the beginning - my computer is having issues with being slow. When browsing internet, I tend to get the random slow period where something locks up or doesn't load as fast, maybe even some archiver freeze or a program randomly going "Not Responding" - things of that sort.

I wouldn't really midn it, but it does happen way too often for my computer which is supposed to be rated atleast "good" and I am completely confused as to why is this happening.

NOTE - this is not even happening in gaming, most of my slow issues are when browsing the internet, using Windows Explorer and other outside-of-gaming programs, which means that my computer can do the most demanding tasks, but not the basic ones.

I don't know what information to provide to help you guys troubleshoot it, so just tell me and I'll give all that's needed.

My question is - following lots of searching on the internet - are these machines generally robust and reliable? I know this is a subjective question and that unhappy users are far more likley to broadcast their negative reviews than happy users their positive reviews. So there is always a negative bias toward negative information. You folks on this forum are here because you are users of Lenovo computers and any thoughts you may like to share, especially o the generation 5 X1, would be most welcome. I have read the various threads and accept long lead times for delivery etc., it's worth it for a great PC but not if I find I have to return it (this has happened twice for me with Dell by the way). Many thanksRobert

A:Win7 freezes & BSODs when playing high spec games only (loads of info inside)

Pardon the very early bump, but I have new information that could help maybe!

I ran a processor (& ram) stress test using a program called Prime95. It put both my cores at 100% use and was supposed to do so for several minutes.

On the first attempt, one of the two cores suddenly dropped to 0% and I received the following message:
[Mon Apr 08 22:21:26 2013]
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

The second core stayed at 100% as the test was still going on, but about 1 minute later, my computer completely froze (same way as explained in the first post).

I tried running the test again with another setting to try to focus more on the processors and less on the RAM (although I believe it still put stress on the RAM to a certain point), and this time within 30 seconds I received a BSOD. The error message mentioned atikmdag.sys.

I'm attaching the latest dump file which includes the new BSOD dump.

So, is my processor malfunctioning? :(

OK, another issue I have come across. Im sorry for being so thick in others eyes. Im a Tech support advisor for Tesco and I only know the basics and a bit extra just to advise whats best for customers, Not fix or drastically alter their machines. Ill start this front the beginning:

The options in PCWORLD I had for my current laptop was this-

Black or Red
Intel Pentium 1.3Ghz
3GB DDR3
250GB HDD
?469.00

White
Pentium dual-core (2CPU's)
4GB DDR3
320GB HDD
?500

I didn't want the extra RAM or HDD space but I did want white and dual pentium so I pondered a bit about what to get. I was leaning more toward the white even though I didnt need the extra stuff. Then I saw Tesco got a new laptop in, Toshiba T130 13K, 3GB DDR3, 250GB HDD, White but said Dual Pentium for ?469.00 so I thought, bargain, matches what I want for ?469 so im getting an extra core for nothing.
Anyway, the WEI has just told me that I only have 1 core, im royaly *@'$"% off. dxdiag states this:
Genuine Intel(R) CPU U2700 @ 1.3Ghz, ~1.3Ghz
DirectX 11

What is the second 1.3Ghz thing about and why does WEI reckon I have DirectX 10 when Diag says it's 11? Which ones right? Is it single or dual core and is it 10 or 11?

Also is my computer absolute poo? Honestly? is single core useless at 1.3Ghz when average systems have dual 2.2's maxing at 4.4Ghz total when Im only maxing 1.3 total?

A:My system spec issue

1) Yes, the CPU is crap to put it bluntly, that would be a slow CULV CPU.

2) Your GPU supports a certain level of DirectX, check the display tab.

Post a shot of HWInfo32's summary screen too. Here it is for my gaming system:

This happened after i installed Comodo firewall. I'm not sure if that is relevant though.

Anyway, i tried running the command "sfc /snannow" in the command prompt(in admin mode) but to no avail even after i restarted the system.

Also, i can no longer create a system restore point manually. Which when clicked "create a restore point" , they will show me these errors.

2nd time

So is another way around this problem?

Have you tried completely removing comodo (all traces and rebooting) from your system to check?

I'm looking to buy 40 computers to be used for Adobe Premiere Pro. Budget needs to be kept in mind as we don't have limitless money.

Currently have two specs suggested by our supplier, what are peoples thoughts;

Spec 1:
CPU: Intel Pentium G2020 (Cores: 2, Threads: 2 @ 2.9GHz)
RAM: 2 X 4GB DDR3 1333
SSD: 60GB Kingston SSD
GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6570 2GB

Spec 2:
CPU: Intel Core i5-3450 (Cores: 4, Threads: 4 @ 3.1Ghz)
RAM: 2 X 4GB DDR3 1333
SSD: 60GB Kingston SSD
GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6570 2GB

The main thing I'm interested in is the CPU and GPU, is the i5 worth it over the Pentium (about a £150 price difference per computer). Is the Graphics Card good enough? It is not on the recommended list by Adobe for Premiere Pro, will that be an issue? Should we pick another that is recommend?

Intel Pentium G2020: http://ark.intel.com/products/71070/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G2020-3M-Cache-2_90-GHz

Hi all,

Looking to build a mobile matx pc for digital photography work at various sites, I'm a massive gamer too though. Laptops just don't cut it on large image files in the price bracket I'm looking at, and power sockets (or lack of) aren't an issue. I can't afford two machines so I'm selling my current tower to a friend and reinvesting from scratch. The timing is a consequence of work requirements and GFX going bang so I do kinda need it NOW and budget is 'as little as possible'.

Rough spec: A64 3000 (939), MSI RS480, 1GB dual pc3200 RAM, 2x Seagate SATA HDs, GF6600GT 128MB, NEC DVDRW, Aspire X-QPACK case.

Overall discussion issues are:
1) Portability, so i'm looking at matx but what about mbtx or Epia? Forums suggest mbtx is no better than atx if you understand cooling, it's just easier. Availability and choice also seem to be an issue with mbtx. Via Epia don't seem powerful enough.

2) The QPACK case is spec'ed with a 420w PSU. I read on a forum that this MUST be a typo 'cos detailed PSU specs suggest a 240w PSU! Can anyone confirm or comment on this, everyone is quoting 420 but if all the quotes are from the same source...

3) SSE3 instructions. This is apparently the only technical advantage of the Venice core over the Winchester (disregarding slightly cooler temperatures). Any clarification or real world examples of usefulness of SSE3?

4) General spec. I'm fairly happy with the potential perform... Read more

I'm new here. Before asking my first question, I need to know how to list System Spec for my desktop AND laptop, as some questions will involve both machines. Thanks

A:How to list System Spec for 2 different computers

Hello chiropterist and welcome to Ten Forums.

One your Control Panel (CP) page look for Your Profile > Edit System Spec. There seems to be enough room to add specs for two machines such as: Computer Manufacturer/Model Number 1. Sony Vaio VPCEB47GM Laptop 2. Dell Inspiron 1200 Laptop; OS 1. Win 7 Pro 64-bit 2. Windows XP Pro SP3 64-bit. And so on. Every # 1 refers to the Sony Vaio while every # 2 refers to the Dell Inspiron.

If I misunderstood your question I sincerely apologize. Another alternative is when writing about a machine simply say, "This info applies to the Sony Vaio,,," or this info applies to the Dell Inspiron,,," or this info applies to both machines. I think the people on this Forum will be able to determine which computer needs help.

Thanks!

Try closing all your browsers and seeing if that makes a difference - if not, try clearing out your browser cache and seeing if that makes a difference - if not try rebooting your machine and see if *that* makes a difference

Hi -- Welcome to SevenForums. According to your specs, you only have 2 GB of RAM installed. Having 1.18 usable would be about right. Some of it is used on your Video Card and a few other things. Since you have a 64-bit system, you can install more RAM and increase the speed of your PC quite a bit. You should have at least 4 GB installed. If you do get more, it needs to match what you have. Don't just buy 2 GB more and stick it in because that would cause more problems. Since RAM is fairly cheap these days, it might be good to buy all new RAM. == Have you tried putting in your old video card and seeing how your PC operates? That will give you somethin... Read more

Hi,

There's this friend who was asking me as to how can I check if the programs he will install will not hog the resources of his pc..Well I don't have an idea about that...

He has this Dell Optiplex pc with 2gb ram and Pentium D processor formerly running XP but now has Windows 7 Basic installed. He has already installed MS Office 2010. Other software I see are Glary Utilities Pro, CCleaner, Imageburn, Foxit Viewer, Daemon Tools Lite, Malwarebytes free and Avast Free.

Now he is planning to install Adobe CS4 and some games like NBA games, Counterstrike, DOTA etc..Well I am not a gaming freak and my pc is a pure work pc. But I believe at that spec of a pc he has and not even a video card installed I think that pc will crawl...

How can I check if those applications will make the pc suffer or shall I say crawl...?

I seem to have read that it can be computed as to the amount of ram consumption based on the system requirements of an application versus the ram available of the pc but do not know how..I remember that Windows 7 consumes 1gb of ram in idle meaning doing nothing while it is on...yes?

I think that there has to be a way how to determine what he should have as amount of ram for that pc versus the summation of the system requirements of the applications that are installed and he wishes to add.

Can it be determined/computed or......? How..?

What may be a better explanation as to how can these applications that he wishes to install will make the pc slow? S... Read more

A:Determine amount of ram or system spec based on applications that a user wants to install question

Usually the system requirements for a game/application take the operating system's RAM/CPU/GPU/etc. use into account. This is why sometimes you'll see different system requirements for an application for different versions of the same operating system.

On a computer with 2GB of RAM and no discrete video card, modern games are going to perform badly on high graphics settings, and likely not much better on the medium settings. Low settings should be playable, but not very pretty. A decent graphics card will make a huge difference here.

My comments are bolded in my response below. However, in summary, I prefer the HP but I wish it had 8Gbs of RAM (because of Intel HD4000 graphics), an SSD instead of a hard drive, and a gigabit LAN. BTW, an SSD would also help to keep the laptop cooler too!

of course you are always best looking ahead as it says on the official link
Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game. Please refer to your hardware manufacturer and rockstargames.com/support for current compatibility information
so who can say what the next development of GTA will require

Your MB is old technology dates from the days of XP and latest OS drivers are 7

The CPU likewise

My advice is do not spend any serious money on any other components that are not compatible with more modern builds
Where are the graphics coming from please - the most important aspect for gaming

I am aware you have asked on other sites - there is of course nothing wrong in that
If you wish to pursue the advice here please reply.
