Q: Remote Troubleshooting on our network

Hi

The company that I currently work for has a server (windows server 2003) and roughly 16 desktops throughout our building (yes we're small).

For a while now, when one of employee's has had an issue, I'd use a remote desktop program (DameWare Mini Remote Control) to view what was happening and attempt to resolve the issue. Unless it was a hardware issue, other wise I'd be able to address most issues without having to walk to the other side of the building.

Long story short, we recently hired a new QA manager. He claims that remote trouble shooting is a very poor way to trouble shoot, identify, and fix problems. I was curious how true this is. According to his claims, if Access (or any other program) is having issues making their connection to the server, when I remote in, I could be re-establishing the connection, which won't give me the ability to replicate error/issue.

I've never heard of people saying remote troubleshooting is an extremely poor way to view issues/try to fix them. But I may be wrong.

Any advice (and do you have documentation/references to back it up regardless of if you agree/disagree).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I recently purchased a new laptop running Windows 7.  On setup, I was pleased to find that it connected to my home network without much complaint.  However, I soon noticed a misstep -- after putting my laptop to sleep, upon waking, it
would consistently fail to connect to network.
I've tried disabling IP Helper, as well as the wireless adapter's IPv6 protocola
la advice on other forums.  I've also ensured that the driver settings do not allow for disabling to save power.  Seeing that none of these worked, I decided uninstall and delete the driver and install a newer version (in a related issue,
the driver update feature failed to detect the existence of a newer version -- why?).
This appears to have fixed the connection issue.  However, still, after sleeping the laptop and waking, although it connects to the router, I still need to reset the IP command-line via ipconfig /release + /renew.
I was running Vista on my previous machine, and I know that its Network Diagnostic tool would, when presenting solutions, frequently suggest that my computer had the wrong IP and that I should reset it.  I was hoping throughout this process
that the Network Diagnostic troubleshooter would present a similar option.  Instead, however, no matter what I do with my wireless, the troubleshooter only ever returns the message "Troubleshooter couldn't identify any problems."  Whether or not

Hi,
To avoid confusion Let us focus on the first issue within this thread first.
Can you access internet when connecting the laptop directly via cable?
Where did you download the newer version of network card driver? Usually, the “driver update” feature from device manager will go to Microsoft update catalog website for the corresponding driver instead of the manufacture’s website. AT
this point, I would suggest install the latest driver
here. Please note: Microsoft don't write drivers, for any driver related issue, the OEM is always the best resource to turn to. Your understanding is appreciated.
As a workaround, you can prevent the network card from sleeping by the following method:
Open Device manager->expand Network adapter-> right click on the wireless adapter->Properties->under Power Management tab, uncheck the box before “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.

Just for the record, I have successfully setup up many a Windows box with RD working just perfectly...but please assume I know nothing

I built a new machine for a friend, and everything worked fine here at my home. I used RD to connect to the new machine often, rather than hook up a monitor, so I know it was working, at least within the same LAN. Now that the box is delivered and a city away, I cannot connect. Here is what I know...

I configured Win7 to always pull 192.168.1.100 so we are pointed to the correct box
RD is enabled. assigned allowed users, allowed through Windows firewall, etc.
I configured his router to forward port 3389 to the box
I also tried making this machine the DMZ (no luck)
I am able to access the router remotely, so of course the DNS pointer and IP are correct/working.

I'm stumped...I can find his computer on the net, can access the router, have every permission set and enabled, but cannot connect.

It has to be his router, no? It seems to be the only variable since I could RD into the machine when it was on my home LAN...

Any and all help is welcomed with open arms! Thanks!

Just as a test, are you able to telnet to his IP/DNS from your home to port 3389? Does anything there answers?

Apart from the Windows built-in firewall getting in the middle, the router may have its own messing with the connections, or maybe your friend installed another antivirus or firewall and that's blocking your connection.

Maybe askking for a temporary Teamviewer connection to see if anything else was changed.

I am running a wireless Network with D-Link 714P+ Router. My PC is wired to the Router, with 2 other computers running wireless. I am running XP Pro.

When accessing my PC (or at least attempting to) from a remote Computer using Remote Desktop, I think I have to add something after the IP Address when typing in the Computer Name/IP Address. I have RD working successfully within my Network. Can someone clarify what I need to do here to access my PC through the Internet then Network

(Even though I have got this far with setting up my network, please go easy on me with the computer lingo)

i am sharing internet using these devices on both of my PCs (on pc using lan card and on laptop using wireless card). but i am not able to share files on my network.
When i try to access Laptop from Desktop using MyNetworkPlaces a window appeares and asked for user name: Guest/ and password:

Hello everyone,

My parents have COMCAST internet. I am connected to a home private network by wireless modem that we have with the service. I close my laptop at night to put it in sleep mode. Then, I bring it out of sleep mode the next day. When I do, I am no longer able to connect to the home private network even during troubleshooting scan resolve; no internet connection at all. The home private network name we have is listed in the wireless connections side menue, but it says can't connect when I try to click on it to connect. I open network and sharing center and I noticed that I have Local area Connection, Local Area connection 2 and Local Area Connection 3 listed and says unidentified network for each one. My home private network no longer shows in network and sharing center. All This happens and is listed every time I bring my laptop out of sleep mode, but even before sleep mode....home private network is connected; I have internet, but when I hover over the wireless bars icon in bottom right desktop taskbar......underneath home private network name with internet access stated, it says unidentified network no internet access. I have manually disabled all local area networks before this issue to where only my home private network is connected. I have manually disabled all local area networks after this issue happens. It seems it's wanting to connect to one if not all three of these local area connections and it seems it is interfering with my home private net... Read more

Hi all, I really don't know squat about networks, frankly I am surprised that I got it working and kept it working for a couple of years now. Recently the teens got their own systems and everything ran smooth for a few weeks and now we constantly get internet outages.
We have a win xp machine that is home to the cable modem and a belkin router, model
f5d7230-4, a windows 98se machine with a belkin usb adaptor, another win xp also with a belkin wireless usb adaptor and a Linux machine with a d-link card. ( I'll have to hunt up the exact model) The problem is that we are constantly loosing internet on the second xp machine and the linux machine ( the win 98 machine isn't used very much, but is offline right now) Most of the times we lose it on the above machines but for the last couple of days I lose connection on the main one. I can usually get it back after unplugging the router for a few minutes and restarting. After a few minutes I get a yell from upstairs that " my internet is out again".

If you have teen girls, you know the yell!

Any ideas on where to begin?
Ps, she is yelling at me again! Says she can see that the network is there, is just won't connect.

Hey guys, I have some trouble with my home network and I'm running out of ideas. I don't like to ask for help but here I am, a little desperate as well to be honest.

The network components:

Switch (10 clients, 1 server (Windows Server 2008 R2 with AD/DNS/DHCP), 1 router)

Now I bought a new Router (ASUS AC66U) for the second floor, which I configured as Accesspoint so I can use WLAN, also connected to the switch.

I flashed DD-WRT and everything seemed to work fine, but sporadically I lose Internet connectivity on my WLAN connected devices. Later I discovered, that I also lose connection on my clients when that happens.

I ran a wireshark capture on one of the clients and what happens now (reproducible) is that when I open a URL I get lots of TCP DUP ACK and TCP RETRANSMISSION packets, the site opens very slowly, if at all. Now the interesting part: When I turn off the AC66U and open up a site it instantly loads and there are maybe 1-2 retransmission packets.

I didn't run the wireshark trace on other firmwares I tried (ASUSWRT Merlin, stock firmware and TomatoUSB by Shibby) but the symptoms are the same.

In the source of the packets I see the MAC adress of the first router, which connects to my ISP and I guess there is some kind of conflict but I am by no means an expert to network related stuff.

Three PCs on a network connected by a switch (no router) which is also connected to a modem.

1st PC is Win95, 2nd is XP Home, third is dual boot WinXP Pro/Win2K.

The problem is that when the dual boot is running XP Pro it cannot access the files or printer that is on the Win95.
When the dual boot is running Win2K there is no problem.

What is the difference between Win2k and XP Pro that is causing this problem?

Running W98SE I just switched ISPs from IDSL to ADSL and after reinstalling ICS on the machine with the Internet connection, the other two PCs no longer have Internet access (applications such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express can't find the Internet connection). The network still works (the 3 machines see each other just fine, can transfer files, etc.) W98 ICS help only says check that the client machines' adapters' TCP/IP obtain IP addresses automatically. Can anyone suggest a relatively thorough troubleshooting checklist for ICS? Thanks!

Recently, one of our old servers died. It was expected, so it wasn't to big of a problem.

I got a new server up and running, it was working awesome. So much faster than before. Anyways I re-installed my Panda Business Secure and pushed out the communication agent to all of the office PC's.

After doing this rollout of the communications agent, the network seems to be slowed to a crawl. Is there some free program that I can get or use to check why its going so slow? I am new to this job and unfortunately have no one to help me, so Im completely at a loss here and people are slowly getting mad.

What's it plugged into? (Switch, what model, what type of cable, etc)

What type of server?
What's processor load? (CPU, disk IO, etc.)
What processes are loaded? (Look at taskman)
What's it connected to? (Do netstat -no)

For what it's worth, a very common problem on switched 10/100 networks is Link Speed/Duplex. I wouldn't exactly call FastEthernet link negotiation reliable. If the NIC is forced 100/FULL, or the switchport is forced 100/FULL - the other side will never try PHY negotiation and will more often than not end up with mismatch duplex.

I have 4 computers on a mixed WinXP Pro and Vista network with a linksys wireless router and dsl.

One WinXp machine is plugged directly into the wireless router with Cat5 cable and there is a desktop with a linksys wireless card and 2 laptops.

The workgroup I named Workgroup. Each computer has a unique computer name. The computer that is wired directly to the router is called JOY-DELL.

I can see the other computers and they can see this Dell, but when they try to access it, they get a message access denied. Error Code 0x80070005. The other WinXp machine said that it might not have permission, contact the administrator, etc.

On Joy-Dell, file & printer sharing is enabled. Folders are shared.

They all have AVG Internet Security and I went into the firewall settings and made the linksys router 192.168.0.1 to 25 safe zones, also setting for Small Network. I even at one point disabled the firewalls.

They can ALL get on the internet just fine, which tells me it's something else.

HELP??

I have three computers on a peer-to-peer network. The primary one is Win98, the other two are Win98SE. They are connected by 10-100 Ethernet, wired. My main company program is a DOS program on the primary computer. The other two computers have recently slowed down MASSIVELY when trying to open and use the DOS program from the primary computer, to the point that the program is unuseable because of the wait time for something to happen. I can't think of anything I did to any of the computers before this happened.

Is there some troubleshooting method for networks buried in Win98? Any ideas what I could look for that might cause this?

OK, I'm going to let everyone know that I'm not a computer guru. I can manage. Anyways, here's my problem.

I've recently moved into an apartment complex that uses Hotwire Communications. My router is a LinkSys WRT54GS wireless router and my modem is a Zoon ADSL modem. I've talked to a friend who lived in a similar complex and he had a similar issue. He said that his problem was that his ISP used a DDNS, and not the static one (like my previous provider COMCAST).

The problem seems to be me losing my connection. I'll either be playing a game or surfing the web when all of a sudden, the internet stops working. I've tried to look into setting up DDNS and signed up with DynDNS, but that's as far as I've gotten. All help is appreciated, and my current setup is Modem->PC (Not Modem->Router->PC)

Yes I have any Eee Asus mini model N450 laptop .it's used I bought it 2 weeks ago Earlier I did a soft reset (not a hard drive wipe ) I went to hotspot my device for my cell phone as I normally do with no issues and it is saying error code: 0x80070426..." an error occurred while troubleshooting..." a problem is preventing troubleshooting from starting"....

I have a D-Link DI-624 router that is acting up. I have 2 computers connected by ethernet cable and a laptop that I connect via wireless. The router occasionally reboots itself, causing all connectivity to cease. It also will occasionally just drop the wireless connection and then reconnect after a few minutes. I read on a another forum that this issue might actually be caused by my ADSL connection somehow. I find that hard to believe but I have done everything I can think of (firmware upgrade) on the router and it still acts up.
Is there a good way to determine that the phone connection is not the issue?

Wireless interference or the router is getting flaky. You could try with the wireless signal disabled and maybe eliminate interference as the cause.

I was having a real problem that ate up many hours
(see techsupportforum.com//networking-forum//94185-asymmetric-file-sharing-error.html) but a moderator on this board (johnwill) posted a helpful checklist. (see second post in above thread). In addition to that, I found my problem solved by booting windows xp into 'safe mode with networking'. This allowed me to identify the fact that my problem was caused by some application running as a process in the background. Eliminating the processes one by one from a normal booted machine, eventually restored normal networking and identified the culprit. I post this as a first step that might help anyone with a frustrating windows xp networking problem.

That is one of the major premises behind safe mode; that it is just windows so that you can troubleshoot possible sources of errors either by creating new user accounts, or disabling various programs from running.
The inclusion of network support in safemode is a real big help too since it allows you to run online scans too.

Hi

Dunno if this is better in the networking forum or the printer forum but i thought i'd give this forum a try as i tend to think it may be the network but need opinions and why.

The problem is:

I've got a Kyocera FS-C5016 Laser Colour printer on a network (connected via TCP/IP not shared). I did one print to it this morning and that was all it would do for the rest of the day. I've tried to ping it, but failed. I've changed IP address,no luck. I've tried same ethernet cable used for this printer on a computer and from this PC I could ping other PC's and gateway successfully. I've powered off/on my switch and DSL modem, still no go. I've checked all network configurations on the printer, and all look good.

I've hooked my laptop to this printer with a cross-over cable and I can ping and print perfectly (same IP address on printer), never failed once. I've also hooked this printer to another PC's via cross-over and no problems there.

However as soon as i hooked the straight through cable to the NIC on the printer, bang, no ping,no print, thus no go. Printer says "Ready" on LED. I can perform internal prints without problems.

I have since added a add-on NIC to the printer giving it the same IP address as the onboard while having disabled the onboard NIC on the printer. I can ping, print etc all without issue. I've never dealt with other than shared network printers, so my only question to toss out is have you tried reinstalling the printer software on the network? Or would such a setup even require printer software to be installed somewhere?

hardware concerning: ethernet, specifically nforce4 network controller (drivers

situation: Assigning pc to static ip of router (wrt54g) ie; 192.168.1.xxx default gateway, and primary dns as 192.168.1.1

problem: upon bootup the network can not find the proper route and has to diagnose/troubleshoot to fix the problem, which was a nag every time and gadgets like weather and such would not be updated until this was resolved. If leaving network to dhcp the problem would not occur or nag. Yes dhcp set on router.

solution: simple really, going to nvidia's site and installing the latest nforce4 platform drivers fixed the problem (which i think is just a reinstall of the drivers as i think they are the same that are packaged with win7 7000. Have not checked this yet to confirm

I just recently did a clean install for my new SSD on my alienware m11x and have been having problems with inconsistent download speeds. I made sure I had all the correct drivers and was pretty thorough in doing so (to the best of my knowledge.) After a week or so of no luck, I think I may have stumbled upon the source of the problem. I troubleshooted my wireless network adapter and it showed that it had fixed the problem. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I ran it again and it said that it had fixed the problem. Again, this was not the case.
TLDR;
Troubleshooting the error is not fixing the problem. What will!?

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. My computer came out of sleep mode on friday without internet access. I immediately placed a support request with my network provider (I live at a university) but they have yet to respond. In the meantime, I'm treating the issue as though it's originating with my hardware and not theirs.

I've tried updating my network adapter driver, reinstalling the adapter, disabling services like Bonjour, restoring my system, entering safe-mode, releasing/renewing my ip, malware detection, disabling tunneling adapters, disabling IPv6. Finally, I lost my mind and tried a full reinstall of windows. The problem persists, unchanged.

I got my Fiber line installed about 2 months ago. The offer I pay for says 1Gbits/s down and 200Mbits up. Naturally, I've never even gotten close to those speeds. At first, when the guy did his thing, I didn't have an Ethernet cable on hand (despite being a network and IT student...I know, the irony), so I used the router's Wifi. I was averaging 70 Mbits down. At first, I was thinking, 'this seems a bit low'...for fibre of course). I went into lectures the next day and people said, you may need to wait for your line to be properly activated...this seemed plausible, so I waited. The next week I stuck an RJ45 on some CATVE and immediately went to average 500Mbits/s (688Mbits/s record). Now, this is great, but it's still half of what I'm paying for.

However, for the past 2 days, I've been having problems. My Desktop (after coming out of sleep) always has the yellow triangle symbol over the wireless icon (faulty ethernet cable so was back to WiFi). I disconnect and reconnect to find the same problem. I restart the wireless on the router, to find the problem is persisting. Only after 3-5 tries does it work. My phone too has been having trouble connecting to WiFi (Authentification problem).

The original CAT5 cable has since 'developed' a problem and has been changed. The Pc hasn't been having the connection problem out of sleep, but Chrome is very slow to do anything. Youtube loads every other time, social media too. I... Read more

Im using Windows XP Professional on both my desktops.
I am using a Netgear 108 mps wireless router, WGT624v3
And a LinksysWireless-G PCI Adapter.
I have completed the setup, I have good signal strength. However I cannot connect to the internet, and The adapter is saying the it is "Aquiring Network Address"
Under the support tab, it reads that I have an invalid IP address and lists the ip address as 0.0.0.0. When I click repair it reads renewing ip address but never seems to renew itself.
I have disabled my firewall restarted both computers, router, and adapter multiple times and still have no success. Please help with any advice or recomendations.

If your "setup" includes encryption and MAC addresss block or other filtering/security methods you should only add those incrementally as you know other stuff is working

Startout just trying to connect to a simple wireless broadcast and verify your adapter sees the SSID being broadcasted by the router.

My machine has been experiencing intermittent BSODing over the last few weeks and I wonder if you could give me a hand troubleshooting it? I'll summarise what i've done so far. It's not given me anything today, as I say, it's intermittent.

OS Reinstalls: None
This is a desktop PC
System Manufacturer: Purchased from ChillBlast
Troubleshooting so far:
* Checked EventViewer for after the crashes. The only useful thing showing is that the Kernel service is shutting down - which I suppose it would if power to it was interrupted.
* Opened up case to check components. Everything seated well. Extremely tidy cabling (if I may say so myself; nothing getting in any fan's way).
* Ran GPU stress test - all fine.
* Ran Processor stress test - all fine
* Ran driver verifier (ran for about 20 minutes) and nothing crashed.

Hi all,

This is all on my home network - both PCs are local to each other.

I have a Win 8.1 PC which hosts all my media and documents, which I connect to via remote desktop and share a drive on the network. It has no monitor, so remote desktop is my main method of access.

Very occasionally, I will turn it on and be unable to connect to it or the mapped drive. In fact my main PC (Win 7) cannot find it on the network anywhere. But it IS on the network - I can connect via my mobile using Splashtop and I can also connect
via TeamViewer from the main PC. This is not a solution though as I need to be able to access the shared drive on my main PC.

Both PCs use Bitdefender. Makes no difference with the BD firewall temporarily turned off. As I mentioned, sometimes it connects fine with no issues and sometimes it can't find it. In these situations, I can't even ping the Media PC's IP address
(timeout), nor can the Media PC ping the main PC. It can, obviously, ping the router.

Usually a restart of the Media PC fixes this (although, that's annoying) - but today it isn't. The error that I get is 'The network path was not found' and for remote desktop 'Remote Desktop can't find the computer 'MediaServer". This might
mean it does not belong to the specified network ..." etc.

Me and my father would like to set up a remote network on our computers so that we can share resources. I have high speed but he still had dial up. His modem is 56k. If we set up the network will he be able to high speed as well or will he need to buy an ethernet/combo card???

I don't understand what you are trying to do? Are you trying to share an internet connection? If so, how far are you apart? And yes, if you want to connect at DSL speeds, a modem will NOT work..

If you just want to share files, you can set up an FTP server using IIS... and share your whole hard drive... just remember to password it!

hey guys, is there a way to get into the registry of a computer on my network and change it to "yes" so i dont have to go to each computer and check it to allow remote desktop connections.I dont want all of them to have it checked but id like it so i can remote in when i want to.

Try regedt32, it only opens 2 hives, but perhaps that's enough. Go to Registry and Select Computer, enter computer name. Also make sure to close that registry or it will try to open it everytime you run regedt32.

Basically I am trying to establish how i can join my network at home from here in hawaii.

at home i have 5 computers behind a router/firewall combo. Here there is no firewall or router.
Comps at home have Windows 7 Ultimate(x64), my computer Windoes 7 Home Premium (x64). (so joining/setting up a domain wont work)

So the idea is that i can pull whatever network resources i need from here in hawaii without having to remote desktop in and if my little brothers host up a LAN game i can jump in and play them a while.

I work for a county government and we use the AS400 if anyone is familiar with that. Also each employee has a private folder on access to their department folder on a different server. I am trying to use a VPN to access the system from a laptop which I have recently upgraded from Win 98 to WinXp HE. The systems the county uses are Win 2000 Professional Edition. Our IT guy gave me the software to load and very simple directions to follow. Many people have used this same software and these directions to set up a VPN. The difference is they are using Win2000 and I am using XP.

The Software is Cisco VPN version 3.5. It is installed and I can connect and use the AS400 however, when I try to Login to our network server, I get the following:

the network connection could not be found
more help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2250

system error 53 has occurred
the network path was not found

The IT services guy has been helping me and he is way smarter than me. He is sure it is something in XP that isn't set right. He played with it all one afternoon and we couldn't get it fixed. Since then he hasn't had time to work on it and I thought I would try the Tech Support Guy Forum to see if anyone could help. He thinks it is just some simple setting that won't let the network drivers map. With Cisco you can't manually map the drivers. I tried that. Is it an XP problem (hopefully just a simple patch I can download and my problems are solved) or is it a compatab... Read more

Ok, I manage like 15 computers, friends, family etc, and want to setup something like remote command prompt access so i can move some an installer for whatever or fix issues remotely without bothering them. I was thinking something like telnet, or SSH but not sure how much access that will give me to the computer, I already have the built in admin account setup for using remote desktop but I truly hate using that. I want to avoid using remote desktop because well it sucks unless you are hard-lined on the same main network. I really don't need to see what they are doing, which is why i want to avoid using teamviewer, i don't wanna have to call them every time i need to login to fix something, and i don't wanna accidentally remote in and see them doing banking or something else like that.

Use the Terminal mode in Remote Utilities. It's free for personal use, btw, and won't annoy you with banners like TeamViewer.

Hi guys,

I'm running two windows 7 PCs, and I'm always on my college's campus. There are a great many times that I'd like to be able to access my computer at home with my small laptop while on the college's internet. I don't know that much about remote desktop access, but from what I understand, you can only access a computer with Microsoft's build in app if you're on the same network. Or is this just false? If this is indeed the case, what can I do so that I may remotely access my home computer, regardless of what network I am on? (If that's really even possible. Like I said, I know nothing about remote access).

Assuming that the files are shared with the correct permissions on the work server side and that the incoming VPN connection is already set up which should be done by the network admin.

And you forwarded these ports on your router's firewall. PPTP TCP Port 1723
PPTP GRE TCP/UDP Ports 47

From what I have read you may also need to go to ipv6 properties of the VPN connection and uncheck' use default gateway on remote network.

You may also need to use the UNC path to access the folders or drive, though I believe the User name and password would usually work \\hostname\sharename

Hi all. I use RealVNC. My network configuration is; cable modem to PC with in and out NICs, out line to switch, 3 PCs connected to the switch. I have to remote in to the host PC, then remote into the PC on the network through the gateway PC. Is there a way I can remote directly into one of the PCs with the class C IP; ie. 192.168.0.134/66.178.XX.X?

I've have a computer at home and I would like to remote desktop, I've forwarded port 3389 to the destination computer in the router, but I still cannot remote. But when I am in the same network, I can remote.
