Lenovo Z61T not booting

Q: Lenovo Z61T not booting

So, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61T 9660CTO which I bought in 2007. It has served me well. Yesterday, it was working perfectly, albeit with some exxtra high heating at the bottom, close to 60-70 degrees Celcius. Then , I wanted to put in a new SSD into it. So, I took out the old HDD and then connected it, and the other SSD via USB casing to another computer running a disk cloning software. Tried it did not work. Now, I put back the old HDD into the Thinkpad, it does not start up again at all. Even the first screen which says "Thinkpad" press Blue button for recovery" does not come up now. Hard drive is not it, since the screen does not switch on at ALL. If it was HDD failure, it would say something like HDD not detected. But in this case, it does not even show the initial Thinkpad screen. So, this may be a loose connection somewhere (even though I did not remove the casing at all while removing the HDD) Both times, I removed and reattached the HDD, with the power cable removed from the Thinkpad, but, the battery was still inside the chassis. Short circuit? Bad! Someone help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I did a defrag and a windows clean up on my windows 7 OS the other day and ever since, I can't connect to my wifi. When I open my network and sharing center it says that the adapter is not connected. But as far as I'm aware I haven't disconnected or unplugged anything. My wireless switch is still on "on". Please help! I have to get online to do a project for school!

A:Lenovo z61t won't connect to wifi

What is "a windows clean up"?

What happens when you try to connect to your network?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows Vista or latter I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network if it is not obvious.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

[Press ENTER after each command.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I don't know what the original version was, but you will want to install the latest version in any case, which can be found at the link below Lenovo Solution Center for Windows 10 / 8.1 / 8 / 7 (64-bit) - Desktops, Notebooks, Workstationshttps://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds104501 Cheers,

I have a Z61T with 3GB RAM and T2400 CPU.  I planning on upgrading the hardware so that it will have: T7600 (64 bit) and a Samsung 840 pro SSD along with a Intel Wi-Fi dual band 300 MHZ mini PCI card. Should I upgrade to 64 or 32 bit!  (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 - has in this card a Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset.  Lenovo if I understand it correctly; has hardwire the Z61t to be limited to 3GB or close to it even if you have 4GB installed. Windows 8 boot up is faster; but when working with web browsers it is close in performance with 7.  Shut off is faster too in 8.   I leaning towards gaming that Windows Blue will fix it so you can boot in to desktop if you would like and the Startup Menu will be restored like the Pre Windows 8.   What do you guys think?

Z61t issues, take two. Greetings! I recently upgraded from a Lenovo C200 3000 to a Thinkpad Z61t, and it's had it's fair share of issues, though most of them not laptop-specific. Well, most of them, anyways. I did some reading (which is what brought me here, google searching), and the more critical of my issues, is the battery light is pulsing amber, regardless of whether or not it's plugged in, and it doesn't charge according to the battery meter. HOWEVER, it still holds a charge and doesnt shut down when I unplug it. Based on what I've read, I'm suspecting the battery is dying, but it hasn't quite died yet. Does this sound correct? My second issue is somewhat less critical - the palmrest. Mine came cracked and reglued, and while swapping out RAM, I broke it off again, near the right side of the end below the speakers. Lenovo's site states a specific palmrest goes with the Z61t, but the problem is, that specific palmrest has a large dimple to the left of the touchpad keys, which blocks an attachment point, so it doesn't fit on the frame. If it's any help, it comes with the generic "IBM THINKPAD" red-green-blue markings instead of the "THINKPAD *Model*" markings. The replacement I purchased (that didn't fit, with the dimple) had a sticker on the underside giving the partnumber, which is what Lenovo's site states is the proper palmrest, but it's incompatible with my (clearly marked on both top and bottom) Z61t, so.... Does anyone know what the part num... Sorry for double post, but I had to wrap the last one up quickly to get to class. There appears to be three different palmrests for the Z61t 14.1" - No fingerprint reader, fingerprint reader beside the touchpad, and fingerprint reader below the arrow keys. I have the one beside the touchpad. That's just without the deep dimple beside the touchpad.

I know question regarding z61t HDD upgrade has been asked, but I'm sorry I still have to ask again. What I know from previous discussion is:1. You can upgrade HDD to any 9.5 mm in thickness, 2.5 inch form factor SATA up to 500 GB2. You can use Acronis True Image to copy your current HD (data+hidden partition) by connect laptop to the new HDD using USB enclosure. What I want to ask:1. There's a thread mentioning about APS. If I just buy any HDD such as WDC, Seagate, Samsung, it should work right? I think remember reading here that HDD nowadays support this technology.2. If I did not use Acronis to copy my current HDD, but I just directly insert the new HDD and restore it using the recovery CD that I have previously created with RR, would it also recreate the hidden partition?Thank you for anyone who reply to it and please correct me if what I stated in above explanation is wrong.Regards,Kevin

A:z61t HDD Problemo

1. They all support part of the APS system of unloading the head, only the Lenovo supplied hdd have the full APS firmware, which is one reason they are more expensive. But i have installed an aftermarket WD 500 gig hdd for a z61t and it works with the APS, though i have tested fully by dropping it when transferring a large file to the onboard hdd.  2. Yes you can do that too, but it just takes slightly longer, which is okay for an once off.

There are no options, just a black screen.I wait for an hour, and absolutely nothing happens.I made sure nothing else is plugged in except for the Charger. The laptop is a Lenovo Y51.If you need anymore information, please ask. Hello,I'm new, and hope I'm not going to annoy anyone by posting a questions that may have already been posted. I'm not a gamer, just using the Z61t for everyday tooling around, but it is incredibly slow right now. I have removed most of my stored data on this computer and placed it on a USB drive connected to my desktop. I have also upgraded theRAM to 2GB.Is it worth upgrading a Z61t? My research leads me to believe that I can increase the speed of the computer by about 50-60% for a few hundred dollars. Could I just as easily buy a new 'bargain' laptop for about $500 and get a better/faster machine? If I were to choose to upgrade the machine, where can I find all encompassing information regarding the process? I have changed RAM in this Z61t and my Dell desktop, but this would be my first complete overhaul. My reasearch so far has pointed toward upgrading the following items:Upgrade CPU processor to T7600(G)Upgrade HHD to 250-500GBUpgrade OS to Windows 7 ProPossibly upgrade RAM maxing out at 3GBI know there is a specific order to work on these processes. Is there a central location or periodical that could walk me through the correct order? Does anyone suggest any additional upgrades?

A:Worth upgrading a Z61t

Welcome to the forum!

My advise would be to upgarde to 3GB RAM, install an SSD and put a 32bits Win7 on it. You won't recognize your machine anymore in terms of speed.

This is done rather easy, you already upgraded RAM once and swapping the hard drive it's even easier. Check the details in the hardware maintenance manual (HMM) which you can download from here: click me!

Check page 58 to see instructions how to replace a hard drive (page number printed in the pages, not the page number of your pdf viewer)

You can also upgrade your CPU, which requires removing more components (instructions in the HMM as well), but I personally would invest my money in the SSD first. Unless you have a Celeron or a single core CPU.

Hope this helps! And don't hesitate to post your questions here, that's why we're here

P.S.: Could you post your machine type? It's a 7 digit code that you can find in blac&white sticker at the bottom of the laptop

I have experienced this lately, mostly when my laptop is in the docking station. If I open the laptop and increase the volume to the max it then plays more loudly while in the docking station. However, I do think that the volume level when in laptop mode is weak, even when it is cranked to the max.

A ThinkPad z61t gets a memory error from 2 apps continually while it is running.  The 2 apps are AcSvc.exe & AcPrfMgrSvc.exe and a popup for each of them surfaces every 5-10 minutes stating that they cannot write to memory.  If I disable all of the ThinkVantage  "Access Connections" services then no more popups.  I tried to uninstall them but the computer hung.  Any idea how I can get this thing back to working as it should?   thanks.

A:z61t memory errors

If access connections is causing the problem, go in the Control Panel, then Add/Remove programs and locate the ThinkVantage Access Connections program. See if there is a "repair" option that will automatically reload Access Connections for you. If not, go ahead and try to uninstall Access Connections. Once uninstalled, you'll be prompted to reboot your system Once you reboot the system, go into your "ThinkVantage" Folder (Start -> All Programs - ThinkVantage) and then look for "System Update". Run this program and allow it to locate a newer version of Access Connections for you. If the "System Update" program is not there, you can go to Google's website and type in "TVSU-UPDATE" in the search box, click "Search" and then click on the link to the first item listed under the seach results. Be sure to click on the link to download version 3.14. DO NOT DOWNLOAD TVSU 4.0 - IT IS FOR WINDOWS 7 ONLY! Use the System Update tool to install Access Connections for you (you'll see a list of all the programs and drivers, but you can decide which other updates are needed). Hopefully this will help you to fix your problems with Access Connections. Let me know if this works for you Good luck,Mark

The disk read/write light quickly flashes about every three seconds. Absolutely nothing happens on screen so I cannot access the BIOS. I do not know what changed between then and now but now it will not boot. I have already attempted booting without the hard drive to the same effect.Thank you.

My Lenovo B590 was working fine yesterday, today suddenly I can't make it boot up. I have recorded a video that demonstrates the behaviour of the Laptop on Power On:https://youtu.be/T9IcxsIgRcE It remains in an endless loop of powering up for a sec, making some click-sound and turning off immediately. Longpress power button ends the loop. AC cable is connected, battery is inserted. Things I tried that didn't solve the issue:Power On only with AC cable (normally and with 20 sec long Power press)Power On only with battery (normally and with 20 sec long Power press)Removing both RAM and trying it with one each in each of both RAM slotsProbably an issue with the motherboard? A:Lenovo B590 not Booting at all

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the problem you are experiencing.  I would try removing the optical drive and then try powering the laptop up.  If that doesn't work then remove the hard drive and power up.  Since the click sounds mechanical in nature, that would lead me to suspect either one of those devices.  If the laptop powers up with a drive removed then suspect that drive as being faulty.

Your model's User Guide will explain how to remove those drives.  Here is a link to that manual for your reference.....

Hidy ho all,

I have a Lenovo G505s I bought in august. Up to this point, its been a great machine. This morning (11/20/2014) I installed some updates from windows update. around 4:30 PM today, I rebooted the machine, because I had an hour break in between classes. During that reboot it tried to install those updates, and it said it failed. After the failure it said it was reverting back to the prior state before the updates were installed.

It then rebooted again. It got to the Lenovo splash screen, and some little white text on the bottom of the screen has said for the past half hour "Updating your system (5%)" with the windows 8 little circle thing spinning around just above it.

I did try restarting it by holding down the power button, but it came right back to this screen.

Google has turned up nothing yet. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, have they (you) been able to fix it?

A:Lenovo G505s not booting

I think the quickest way around this issue is to let the OS try to install the updates it might take a while to do so(which is a pain) but I would wait because you don't want to mess up your system you might loose more than the time you will wait

I am having issues with booting my laptop. The other day I tried turned on my laptop and it came up with a message which disappeared before I could check what it said. It then put me in a loop with restarting my laptop with options and now it isn't booting at all. Each time I try and power on the machine the screen goes black and the lights on the front to show power and charge light up. Then after about 20 or so seconds, it shuts down. I also tried pressing the OneKey Recovery button on the left side of the device however this did the same as the power button. I stripped down the laptop to check the CMOS battery to see if that was the issue but the battery was healthy and showing 3.19 volts. What else could this issue be?  Thanks, James W.

Greetings! I have a tiny Bluetooth daughtercard I want to install my recent Amazon-acquired second-hand z61t, and though I'm going by the book with the z61t hardware manual, I'm having difficulty removing the LCD lid's bezel which is all I need to do. I've disassembled and reassembled Macs since the 90s so I'm not surgery-skittish around PCs, but I just don't want to apply too much force to seperate the bezel from the lid. It almost feels like there're undocumented screws past the listed four holding the bezel and lid fast. So far the only parts of the unscrewed bezel that "give" a little are the lower left and right corners and not past the hinges.  If I knew the exact location of any internal locking snap tabs I could try to pry them directly but the manual doesn't display them.  I almost wonder whether the previous corporate owners used superglue as an adhesive, or whether this is actually not the original LCD lid which doesn't heed the manual's specs. Any suggestions much appreciated! Jim in NYC

I have a Thinkpad z61t that came with a wiped hard drive and no installation discs. Installed XP professional with sp1 right away and then upgraded to sp3. Can not upgrade Windows to .net 3.0 until I can connect to internet. Which means I can not install Access Connections for Wi-Fi either. Tried to install driver for modem, Conexant Rd02-D110 (driver 7fmb14ww). An error came up and said: Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MODEM device. Checked Device Manager and there is no modem listed. I have another (identical) Thinkpad (monitor was damaged) and removed the modem and installed it in one that I am trying to get running. Still no luck in finding modem. Can not use HD from previous Thinkpad, it has a blue screen. I tried the hard boot, did not help, did diagnostics on it and it said contact service. Ended up with blue screen after shutting it down too many times with just the on/off button and removing battery (was told to try this by previous owner). Does anyone have any suggestions on modem or hard drive?

Trying to diagnose my own problem but still need someone elses thoughts. The copy of MS XP Proffessional I am using came with a Dell computer. Would that be causing a conflict with my Thinkpad?

I have a Z61T that died suddenly.  A couple months ago I had an overheating problem and, after searching the forums here and finding a way to clean the fan, I did that and corrected the problem.  A couple weeks after I was using the laptop and left the room, the laptop still on.  I came back a couple hours later and the screen was blank and no lights on the status row.  I thought maybe one of the dogs had chewed the power cord and the battery had run down.  I checked that and put another known good power supply on and got no response.  I searched the forums again and found a possible fix - battery off, push the power button 10 times, then hold for 30 seconds (or 1 min depending on which you read) then power up.  Nothing.  I even have left the battery off for 2 days and nothing.  I did get the unit to power on after the 3rd attempt and was getting into ThinkVantage to run diagnostics when it shut down again.  Now no matter how long the battery is off it will not power and shows no indication if the A/C adapter is plugged in.  This unit is well out of warranty.  I am thinking the system board is hosed but would like someone to reinforce that here or suggest a fix.  I have priced boards both on EBay and various aftermarket suppliers and don't like the looks.  Any input and/or assistance is welcome.    Thanks Neal

A:Dead Z61T - Model 9440-2CU

so you can't get the laptop to start again? I think you should just forget about the Z61t model, and go with say a T60 or T61 (don't get the nvidia GPU version), they are pretty cheap now, you can find a good one on marketplace forums.thinkpad.com. The Z61t thermal management is crippled, as the fan wouldn't run past 2800 rpm no matter what, if you get the TPfancontrol software, you can get the fan to run at 3400 rpm at level 7. The Z61t for some reason doesn't allow CPU to run past 77 degrees, before it automatically shuts off.  Are you using a Core 2 duo processor or Core Duo or Celeron processor? what is the model/type number of your laptop? If you take the ram out and try to reboot does it give any beeping codes??

Hi, I bought a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad model Z61t from a well known vendor back in May and it worked fine for several months but then just recently I tried to power it on and nothing happened. I assumed the battery was dead so I pulled out the power cable and plugged it in but I noticed that the green power & battery LEDs didn't light up like normal and when I tried to power on the laptop again nothing happened. I tried using a different power cable but it didn't work either. Since this unit was refurbished it only came with a 90 day warranty. I don't know what else I can do to get this laptop working again. Any suggestions?

For people who undestand circuit boards I did a test with a power tester and the yellow power connector on the back of the laptop. When the yellow power connector is not connected to the laptop motherboard my power testing meter shows ~20 volts but when I plug the connector into the laptop motherboard like it's supposed to be my power testing meter shows ~0.5 volts. Is that normal. Why would the output of the power supply drop to such a low level?

My hypothesis is also my fear; that the motherboard is dead.

A:ThinkPad Z61t no LEDs and won't power on :(

Im guessing also that its a bad motherboard or a power supply problem of some sort.If where you bought it is reputable and even though the warranty is gone hopefully they can make it right for you.Motherboards can be very expensive to replace. You have to decide if the computer is worth fixing or not depending on its age.Ive bought many lenovo and dell refurbished laptops and in theory if they were refurbished from the mfr they shouldnt have problems already. If the vendor refurbished it they should of made sure all was well before selling it. But to be fair things can be fine one minute and not the next.

Greetings! I wish to free up the USB ports on my z61t, meaning no extranneous dongles if possible. I have cheap opportunities to purchase a Bluethooth daughterboard card on Amazon and eBay, but I want to make sure whether my model z61t can receive the card. How can I tell? Thanks for any hints! Jim In NYC

Hi,

I can't directly answer your question, but perhaps the HMM can - or at least give you some additional things to consider:

I have a ThinkPad z61t (9441-4SE) with an 80GB hard drive, and I would like to replace it. The two drives I'm looking at are the Hitachi 5K320 (320GB) and Hitachi 5K500.B (500GB). Are these drives compatible with the Active Protection System and with my laptop? I really do not want to spend twice as much on a Lenovo drive (which is simply a rebranded Hitachi drive). Also, is there a size limit for the z61t's hard drive? I noticed that Lenovo's site only lists a 320GB drive for a z61t, but sells 500GB drives for other ThinkPad models. Thanks.

A:Replacing the hard drive in a z61t

Firstly Lenovo don't just use Hitachi HDD, they also use seagate and fujitsu too.  As long as the hdd is 9.5 mm in thickness, 2.5 inch form factor SATA drive then it is okay. 500 gig is possible, i have used one in a Z61t.

A:Difficulty Removing z61t Bezel

It's been a while since I've opened a Z61T, but I don't think there's a document with the exact location of each snap. It could be that there is some double sided tape applied.

In such a probable case you could carefully apply some heat using a hairdresser or heatgun.
